Donald Keith Boylan

LONG LAKE, Minn. -Donald Keith Boylan dies at 79; Teacher and Coach in Minnesota.

Donald Keith Boylan, of Long Lake, Minn., died on Nov. 13 after contracting pneumonia, having struggled with atypical Parkinsonism for several years.

Mr. Boylan, 79 years old, was born on Aug. 20, 1933, in Charles City. He leaves his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Wulff Boylan, who was born in Floyd, three children, three grandchildren, a great-granddaughter and eleven nieces and nephews.

For 30 years, Mr. Boylan was boys' basketball coach at Orono High School, west of Minneapolis, where he also taught mathematics and later became the district's first computer/technology coordinator. In addition, Don Boylan served as chief teacher negotiator for the Orono Education Association in contract talks.

Mr. Boylan, who was long active in the Calvin Presbyterian Church of Long Lake, was the third son of Irene May Imus Boylan and C. C. (Cliff) Boylan, a teacher and coach in Charles City for more than 30 years. Father and son, in addition to sharing a profession, had similar approaches to students in the classroom -patient, humorous and insistent on results. Don also followed in his father's footsteps when he coached his school's first cross-country team, much as Cliff Boylan created Charles City's regional Comet Relays in the 1940s.

Don Boylan was a member of basketball, football, and track teams at Charles City High School, and played basketball at Grinnell College. He completed his education at the State University of Iowa.

Bonnie Wulff and Don, who were high school sweethearts, graduated from Charles City High School in the class of 1951. They participated in annual reunions of a group of classmates that have continued for more than 60 years. Bonnie Boylan's twin sister, Beverly, also married a classmate, Junior Moeller. The Wulff sisters graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids.

Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Jodi Cobb Boylan of Watertown, Minn.; a daughter, Kathleen Boylan of Bradenton Beach, Fla.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Susan Boylan and Lowell Seashore of Maple Plain, Minn. In the next generations are grandchildren Katie Walker McNaughton, her husband, John, and their baby daughter Addley; Andrew Walker; and Erin Boylan. Because of their warmth and concern, several other young people in the area came to consider the Boylans as grandparents.

Two of Don's three siblings also survive: James Boylan of New York and Mary Ann Boylan Bernhard of Orlando, Fla. Don's other brother, Dr. Charles E. Boylan of Bellevue, Wash., died in 1994.

Don's surviving in-laws are the Moellers, who live in Des Moines; his sister-in-law, Sharla Kvidera Boylan Ross of Sammamish, Wash.; sister-in-law, Betsy Wade Boylan of New York; and brother-in-law, Ralph Parker of Orlando, Fla.

The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 17, at Calvin Presbyterian in Long Lake, and interment will be at a later date in the National Cemetery at Fort Snelling, Minn. Mr. Boylan served in the Army from 1953 to 1955.

Dennis had an infectious laugh, and was a light in many lives. Besides being a life-long farmer, he was employed by Wilson's, Winnebago, Ruan Trucking and retired from the maintenance department at Fleetguard. Harold and his older brother, Lenord, grew up on this farm settled by his grandparents, George and Emma (Sellmeyer) Schwab. George was born in St. Martin, Germany, in 1849, and emigrated with his parents, Lorenz and Katherina Schwab who had been married in Edenkoben, Germany. George and Emma and his parents farmed near Peru, Ill. George, Emma and their sons, John, William and Frank moved to Stilson, from Peru, Ill., when Will was 13 years old. Their horses, machinery, and furniture were shipped by rail and loaded off onto a tall snow bank at the Stilson depot. For a year, they rented a house nearby. Their home was built on unbroken prairie they purchased for $8.00 an acre in 1893. George and Emma lived on this farm until they retired to Britt in 1910. After teaching for several years, Clara married Will Schwab in 1910 and joined him on the Schwab homestead. Will and Clara farmed until 1942. Harold's mother, Clara Anderson grew up north of Stilson with eight siblings. Her father, August Anderson was born near Linkoping, Sweden in Ulrika Parish. Bertha Christopher, Clara's mother, was born in Janesville, Wis., of Norwegian immigrants who settled in Wisconsin. They later moved to Searsboro, Poweshiek County, Iowa. Harold attended the Boone township country school and Corwith High School. He met Astred Pearson at the Britt skating rink. Astred graduated in the spring of 1940 from Britt High School and was hired by Rex Puffer to teach country school northwest of Britt. They married on March 14, 1941, in the Radio Chapel in Mason City, a popular place to marry at that time. A wedding dinner was held by Astred's parents, Palmer and Ida Pearson, at their home southwest of Britt. The next morning, the newlyweds left for their honeymoon for two weeks in Chicago staying with Astred's great-aunt Emma Carlsson. The couple lived and farmed with Will and Clara until the parents retired. Harold loved farming and purchased and sold several farms over the years. Harold and Astred entertained and enjoyed many family get-togethers. The couple first attended the United Brethren Church in Stilson until they joined the Britt Church of the Nazarene. They were very active in the church for many years. Harold enjoyed all kinds of farm events in the community, especially auctions. Like his parents, Harold liked to travel. Harold and Astred visited friends and relatives throughout the United States and Canada. They also traveled to Europe, Russia and Israel. The couple met many nice people from their travels. They retired to Britt in 1978. Harold continued to farm for several years after retirement for as long as he was able.
