Marvel Barkema, the daughter of Hauko and Trace (Liewuen) Barkema, was born on the family farm east of Goodell in Hancock county on Nov. 3, 1923. The couple retired from farming in 1976 and moved into the town of Sheffield. They enjoyed many years wintering in Arizona prior to Ed preceding Marvel in death on June 6, 1989.

As her health declined in more recent times she moved to the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Marvel's life and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and minds of all who had the privilege of crossing in her life journey. Her family will reflect fondly upon the wonderful years of life on the farm, where she and Ed instilled the values of hard work, faith and family. They will miss the tantalizing aromas that often met them upon arrival in Marvel's home, as she always prepared many delicious meals including her fried chicken, homemade chocolate cake with boiled frosting, loaded chocolate chip cookies, and numerous other desserts for all who graced her kitchen.

She wasn't where she had been. She wasn't where she was going … but she was on her way.

Bev was born Oct. 13, 1935, to William F. and Louise (Kuhl) Roth. She was one of four children born and raised in Mason City, the only girl among three brothers. Three children were born over the next nine years: Rebecca Louise on Aug. 26, 1954, Gregory Fred on Nov. 1, 1956, and Kurt Douglas on May 19, 1962.

Through the years life, family, friends, work and sporting events kept our family busy until grandkids came along. Family was always an integral part of Bev's life, but she became a devoted grandmother to Joshua, Zach, Dakota, Luka, Zane, Zeek, Nazareth, Tracy and Zarrie.

Beverly touched many lives through the years and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her spouse of 59 years: Fred H. Zirbel of Mason City; one daughter: Rebecca (Dennis) Kindschuh of Nora Springs, Iowa, and Henderson, Nev.; two sons: Greg (Sharon) Zirbel of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Kurt (Renee) Zirbel of Mason City; two brothers: Virgil (Betty) Roth of Mason City, and Ron (Kathy) Roth of Riverside, Calif.; sisters-in-law: Rachel Wood, Margaret (James) Marinos, and Doreen (Don) Hanson; brothers-in-law, Glen Zirbel, Don (Margee) Zirbel, Paul (Cathy) Zirbel, David (Melanie) Zirbel, and Mark Zirbel - scattered across the United States; her grandchildren, Josh (Dusty) Johnson, Zach Zirbel, Dakota Zirbel, Luka (Ryan) Pelz, Zane Zirbel, Zeek Zirbel, Nazareth Zirbel, Tracy (Rob) Teeter, and Zarrie Solum; her great-grandchildren: Dustin, Destiny, Bayne, Grey, Daelen, Denver, Megan, Mason, Madison and Merin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who were all special in her eyes.

Preceding her in death were her parents, William F. Roth and Louise Anna-Anna Roth; one brother: Jerry Roth; sister-in-law, Barb Roth; and two grandsons: Wolfgang and Lupus Zirbel. They are together now and watching down upon us.

Special thanks to Dr. Aaron Mansfield, all of the doctors, nurses, staff and health care personnel for helping Beverly through her treatments and surgeries at Mayo Clinic - Rochester, Minn., and in Albert Lea, Minn. To the staff and caring people at Muse Hospice of North Iowa for their support through this difficult time.

Also, the loving support of Jeff Dahlin and the congregation of Praise Community Church for prayer, food and friendship. We are grateful to all of Mom's friends and neighbors who all continued to reach out to our family with their love and generosity. Thank you all.
In her final hours my dad whispered to Mom, "We will be together again, young, barefoot and hand in hand walking on the beach. I found you once and I'll find you again."

Prepare a place for us Mom, we love you and we will be together again.

Dick had a heart for the residents and was known for his sensitive approach to their care. He was a recipient of the Shirley Echelbarger Award in 1997.

After 24 years at the Village, Dick went to work part time at The Lighthouse Christian Bookstore in Mason City, where he truly loved the people he met and worked with. He prepared for his retirement in 2001 by training for several volunteer positions. These included being a front desk escort at Mercy Hospital, a volunteer announcer at KCMR Radio, and a lay liturgist and communion visitor for Zion Lutheran Church. If you had asked him which area was his favorite, he would have said, "I loved them all!"

Richard felt that the ministry had come full circle for him when he was asked to fill a part time position as Lay Visitor for Zion Lutheran Church. It was his deep passion and joy to share his love of Jesus with shut-ins and those in hurting situations. During this time he conducted many funerals on behalf of the church.

By 2008, symptoms of Alzheimer's disease had become more apparent, and Dick began his "final" retirement phase. He became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in February of 2011. He loved the people at the Salvation Army Adult day Care Center, which he attended from June 2010 until entering the I.O.O.F. Home in September of 2011. Even there his sweet personality showed through as he told others he was happy and graced them with his wonderful smile.

A focal point in Dick's life was his marriage to Gaye (Ostlund) Scott on July 9, 1977. Dick and Gaye firmly believed that God had brought them together. They loved sharing the simple pleasures of life such as eating out, going to concerts, and traveling to Branson, Missouri, their favorite vacation destination. They also shared a love of animals and became devoted "parents" to Perky (the parakeet), Charlie (the dog), and Katie and Gracie (cats). Dick was sensitive, kind, generous, loving, compassionate, and a true gentleman. No matter what problems came his way, he never gave up on God and was able to tell Gayle in recent months that God had never left him. His theology was simply "Jesus loves me," and he was known for his favorite expression, "Alleluia!" He is now rejoicing in the presence of his Lord and Savior, and would want his family and friends to join him there someday.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Scott, Jr., and father in law, Donald Ostlund.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Gaye; sons, Richard Scott, Jr., and Steve Scott (Tina Miller); grandson, Justin Scott (Kelsey Klein); great grandson, Adler, Grey Scott; mother in law, Frances Ostlund; sister in law, Meda Ostlund, all of Mason City; brother in law, John (Charlene) Ostlund, of Green Valley, Ariz.; cousin, Virginia Kelly, Beaver, Pa.; sister in law, Jean Scott, of Deltona, Fla.; and nephews, Ralph III., Michael, and Sam Scott. Alleluia!

In his later years, he particularly enjoyed sitting and talking with everyone at the grocery store in Thompson. He enjoyed a good checkers game and playing catch with a Nerf softball with his great-grandchildren.

After the death of his wife in 2001, Elmer remained on the farm in Thompson until the spring of 2007 when he moved to the assisted living facility in Forest City. In the spring of 2011, he moved to the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.
