Wanda Ann Carlson Schnebly

Forest City - Schnebly, Wanda Ann Carlson, 75, 1937 - 2012.

A "Celebration of Life" memorial service for Wanda Schnebly will be held at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, on Nov. 10, 2012, at 1 p.m.

Burial will follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Leland. Following the burial, a reception will be held at the United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Forest City United Methodist Church or to Mosaic in North Iowa (formerly Krysilis, Inc).

Wanda Schnebly was born on Sept. 13, 1937, in Forest City, Iowa, and she passed away on Oct. 14, in Yorba Linda, Calif., due to complications from multiple myeloma cancer.

Wanda was preceded in death by her youngest son, Kelly Leigh Schnebly; former husband Orvin Henry Schnebly, father, Dean Edward Carlson; mother, Stella Mae Carlson Irish, sister Kathryn "Kate" Carlson Kirschbaum; brothers Jerry Carlson and Douglas Carlson.
She is survived by her younger sister Carolyn Carlson Cox; sons Kirby Layne Schnebly and Kyle Lynne Schnebly; daughter, Kerry LeAnn Schnebly; three grandchildren, Kelly Leigh Schnebly, Brandon Layne Schnebly and Brittany Marie Schnebly; their mother Rachael Schnebly; and her very special companion in life for the past eight years Jack Scarpa, and numerous other relatives and friends.

Wanda grew up in Leland, Iowa, and graduated from Forest City High School. In August of 1955, Wanda married Orvin Schnebly and they had four children, Kirby, Kerry, Kyle and Kelly. While living in Iowa, Wanda was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City, and when living in Orange County, Calif., with the United Methodist Church in Placentia, Calif. On June 8, 1964, Wanda and Orvin's son Kelly Leigh Schnebly was born. Following his birth, Kelly suffered irreparable brain damage due to medical malpractice that left him profoundly retarded and physically impaired. Kelly died on April 14, 1984, at age 19. Wanda and Orvin turned this tragedy into a blessing for many others with similar impairments. In 1968, with son Kelly and three other handicapped children, a day care center was started in their home. The "WEE ARC CENTER" evolved from their family room into the many facilities now operating under the name Mosaic in North Iowa, formerly Krysilis, Inc., formerly "Winnebago Handicapped Services" and "North Central Human Services." Today, Mosaic in North Iowa is the second largest employer in Forest City, and serves the needs of many disabled children and adults throughout North Iowa. Three of the homes built in Forest City after Kelly's death are located on Kelly's Court, a street named as a tribute to Kelly Schnebly. Wanda and Orvin were also founding members of Handicap Village in Clear Lake, Iowa, now known as Opportunity Village. Wanda was recognized for her work for persons with disabilities by the Winnebago and Iowa Associations for Retarded Children, the Iowa Council of Developmental Disabilities, United Cerebral Palsy of Iowa, Handicap Village and by Winnebago Handicapped Services, (a.k.a. Mosaic in North Iowa, Krysilis, Inc., and North Central Human Services). She was the founder and first Executive Director of Winnebago Handicapped Services. She was named to the 1977-78 Who's Who of American Women. In 1978, Wanda and Orvin moved to Ames, where they owned and operated the Singer Sewing Center.

In 1980, Wanda moved to California and worked for Weight Watchers for many years. Wanda's book "A Ticket To He" was published in June 2010. "A Ticket To He" is the true story of how Wanda Schnebly and her family's lives were thrust into turmoil and grief because of medical malpractice and what they did to survive and find joy again. It details the medical fiasco that destroyed Kelly Schnebly's life and the resulting historic malpractice lawsuit, the largest judgment in the U.S. to a minor at the time and how Kelly's spirit broke through his profound handicaps and touched the lives of so many others. Kelly has a legacy few others achieve, as does Wanda. Her work and accomplishments, her writings, her kindness, care and love have given hope and inspiration to many.

After living such a diverse and blessed life, Wanda died peacefully on Oct. 14, under hospice care at her home in Yorba Linda, Calif., with all of her immediate family members present.

May God Bless Wanda Schnebly eternally! She was a blessing to all.

Eldora Josephine Christianson Hanna, loving wife of Donald, and adored by her two daughters Ruth (Lynn) Paulson of Madison, Wisc., and Rebecca Hanna of Decorah, died on Nov. 6, in Decorah. Described as a "sweet, gentle woman" and a "courageous individual," she lived up to that reputation until the very end when she succumbed to congestive heart failure. She died with the utmost of class, dignity and courage.

Born on June 17, 1921, to Joseph and Elma Grunhovd Christianson in Scarville, Iowa, she graduated at only 16 years old from Scarville High in 1938 and received a teaching certificate from Waldorf College in 1940 when only 18 years old. She taught at rural schools Linden #9 and Grant #7 in Winnebago County, Moorland and Garner. She married Donald Hanna on Feb. 18, 1949. Following time off to raise her daughter, she returned to teaching in Woden.

Eldora received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Mankato in 1971. She retired from Woden-Crystal Lake in 1984 after teaching for a total of 33 years.

Eldora received the Outstanding Elementary Teacher Award in 1975. She was quoted saying at her retirement, "Teaching has never seemed like a job to me - it has always been something I have enjoyed. It is so rewarding to see children grow in learning."

Eldora co-founded a neighborhood group called KYN (Know Your Neighbor). She was an active member of Grant Lutheran Church in rural Woden, serving in roles such as Church Council Treasurer, WELCA President, Deacon, Secretary/Treasurer of her circle, and Sunday School Teacher. In addition, she was a member of the American Legion Auxilary in Woden and a member of the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. She and Donald were active in Nordic 502 Sons of Norway, The Kum Along Club and Forest City Senior Citizens. In 2003 she received a Golden Membership Pin from the Sons of Norway for her 30 years in that organization. Donald and Eldora loved to travel in their motor home and spent several winters with Donald's siblings in Arizona. They also traveled several times to Norway to visit family and friends.

After a number of years on the farm after Donald's passing, she moved to Decorah, to be closer to her two daughters. She resided at Vennehjem and become active in RSVP serving the Decorah Library, Decorah Genealogical Library, and was a life member of Vesterheim. She was a member of Glenwood Lutheran Church where she was active in circle. In June of 2012, she moved to Aase Haugen Assisted Living and recently into its nursing home.
Special thanks goes to Dr. Dougan and Sandy who assisted Eldora through her health battles, to the staff and residents of Aase Haugen's Vennehjem, Assisted Living, and Nursing Home, who cared for this family in a multiple of ways, and to the Winneshiek County Hospice who provided support and education. Her daughters are so appreciative of their efforts!

Eldora was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Elma Christianson, her husband, Donald, brother, Richard, and nephew David. May they all be together once again!

Contributions in memory of Eldora may be made to any of her many causes: World Hunger, Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, Decorah Genealogical Association, or to the Aase Haugen Fund in Memory of Eldora Hanna for items that would make a significant difference in resident's lives.
