Doris Gabrielson

BELMOND - Doris Gabrielson, age 84, of Belmond, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at her home in Belmond.

Memorial services for Doris Gabrielson will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. Pastor Cindy Morrison will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the Belmond cemetery.

Visitation for Doris Gabrielson will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday Nov. 2, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South, Belmond, and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

In lieu of floral contributions, the family requests monetary contributions to Belmond Medical Center Aux. or United Methodist Church. Both of these organizations were important to Doris.

Doris Gabrielson was born on April 15, 1928, to J. Ralph and Beulah Webb Christie. She was the youngest of four children born and raised on a family farm northwest of Belmond. Doris attended country schools through 7th grade and graduated Belmond High School in 1947. In the fall of that year she attended Iowa State College then continued her nursing studies at Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines where she graduated in 1951.

Doris married Edward L. Gabrielson on Jan. 28, 1951, one month prior to his induction into the U.S. Army for 2 years. After marriage and graduation, Doris came back to Belmond to work nightshift at the Steele Memorial Hospital until the new Belmond Community Hospital opened in 1952. She worked surgery, general duty, labor and delivery, nursery, E.R., outpatient specialty clinics, and back to surgery in 1964 until retirement at age 70. Her family learned to live with "Mom is on call" throughout the years, as she loved her work and always said it was a most rewarding career.

After being widowed in 1984, Doris spent time in Honduras working with a physician missionary, dentists, and nurses in the back hills of that country. Doris and a nurse friend joined another mission which took them to Jamaica where they worked long hours in a primitive surgical unit. In Kenya, Africa, she again worked with U.S. surgeons and African nurses. Doris truly learned to appreciate U.S. surgical and medical procedures and facilities. Doris supported the family business, We 3 Markets, loved her family dearly, and appreciated all of her good friends. She enjoyed and supported many ball games, track events, plays, concerts, and other community activities. Doris was a life member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women and served on various committees. In retirement years, she volunteered for the Belmond Medical Center's Auxiliary and the B/K Elementary School's reading program - and she did a bit of traveling.

Doris loved a good time, and family and friends provided just that. Doris and Ed were blessed with 4 boys and their families: Marc and Camilla of Belmond, Kim and Jane of Germantown, Wisc., Tad and Darla of Pella, Iowa, and Jay and Elsie of Knoxville, Tenn. Michelle was with the family for 12 years, and Willy Yee spent his senior year of high school with the Gabrielsons in 1974. There are 13 grandchildren (Matt, Mitch, Mike, Mindi, Molli, Casey, Sam, Karie, TJ, Niki, Sydney, Keith, Reese) and 4 great grandchildren (Ayden, Eli, Camden, and Doris Mae). Nephews with families, cousins and a host of friends were also a big part of her life.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and 3 siblings: Stanton Christie, Muriel Craun, and June Ewing.

Galen E. Miller

Greene - Funeral services for Galen Miller, 89, of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m., today, Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at The First Presbyterian Church in Greene, with Pastor John Hanna officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation was held 4-7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Scripture service, Sunday night at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, and will continue at the church one hour before services today.

Galen was born on Nov. 2, 1923, the son of Zoa Grace Miller and George Washington Miller, and died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Mercy Health Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Following his father's death in 1931, Galen farmed in Bennezette Township, Butler County and graduated from Greene High School in 1940. Upon graduation, he attended Iowa State University on a baseball scholarship before returning home to run the family farm.

Galen loved playing fast-pitch softball and played several years for the Barth Chevrolet team. He was a great shortstop with an amazing arm and loved to reminisce about his playing days and his teammates. That amazing arm earned him offers to play professional ball, which he turned down because of his responsibility running the family farm and supporting his family.

Galen met Loretta Janssen in 1953 while both attended Rural Youth. They married on Dec. 14, 1954, in Hampton, Iowa. They became the parents of four children and farmed together until Galen's retirement in 2008.

During these years Galen and Loretta were avid bowlers, competing in leagues in Hampton and Greene. He loved and encouraged his children to be involved in many activities and always made the time to attend their school events without fail. He was never too tired or too busy for a game of catch in the yard. He continued to enjoy attending sports and other school events of his grandchildren, becoming an outstanding role model to yet another generation. Galen always modeled hard work, dedication and honesty while displaying a kind, gentle, humble spirit.

He had an unending supply of patience for which we were all grateful. He could always be counted on for a silly joke or lighthearted comment and had a playful demeanor that will live on in the many memories and stories of life with his family. He demonstrated his strength and unwillingness to give up right up until his final breath.

Galen was a real estate broker, first with Miller Real Estate, later Miller and Marsh Real Estate and finally with Miller & Miller Real Estate. He was a member of the Greene School Board and also served as president. Galen was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church while serving as an elder and trustee.

Galen is survived by his loving wife, Loretta of Greene; a daughter, Pam (Kent) Kennedy of DeWitt; a son, Mark (Patti) Miller of Charles City; and a daughter, Sandy (Jeff) Mouw of Greene; 10 grandchildren: Laura Kennedy, Kathleen (Ryan) Kedley, Andrew Kennedy, Tricia Miller, Eric (fiancé Anna Feller) Miller, Emily Miller, Sara Mouw, David Mouw, Leah Mouw and Daniel Mouw; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, George in 1932; his mother, Zoa in 1982; daughter, Laurie Ann in 1965; brother, Duane and his wife, Marian Miller; and sister, Burneile and her husband, Duane Wylam.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Galen Miller Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 219, Greene, Iowa 50636

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, 641-823-4457, www.reidsfuneralchapel. com.
