own choice.
Gloria Jean Wertz, the daughter of Harley L. and Phyllis I (Gabrielson)
Wertz, was born Sept. 10, 1956, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
In early childhood she was baptized at the Norway Iowa Methodist Church.
During her school years, Gloria was active in 4-H and was a high school
wrestling cheerleader. She attended Chariton High School and graduated
with the class of 1974. Gloria continued her education for a time at
DMACC-Area 11 where she was educated in the Key Punch programs.
Gloria was united in marriage to Leslie A. Braner on Aug. 20, 1982, at
the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple's marriage was blessed
with two sons, Branden and Nathan. Gloria thoroughly appreciated raising
her family and was their number one "cheerleader" in life and relished
the role of being the "Ultimate Soccer Mom," supporting them in all that
they were active in. Even in her illness in recent months she looked
forward to being there to support her family and had attended Branden's
weightlifting competition in September.
Gloria had a life-long love of horses and truly enjoyed bonding and
caring for each of them in her life. She was a long-time member of
various Saddle Club groups, first with the Garner Saddle Club and then
on a more regional level with the Three Rivers Pony Express in Worth,
Cerro Gordo, and Mitchell counties. Gloria held various officer
positions with the Pony Express including treasurer and for the past
three years as the group's county coordinator.
Gloria looked forward to family vacations with Les and her children,
including going to Disney World, Universal Studios and other points of
interest in Florida and various other places in the U.S. She also
cherished opportunities to spend time with family and friends on camping
excursions, snowmobile rides with family and the Iowa River Riders
Snowmobile Club, and going on canoeing outings. She was an excellent
cook and made some of the hottest chili and most delicious potato salad.
She loved to spend time with her dogs and more recently working in her
yard. She also had a fondness for the St. Jude's Children's Hospital and
the work and focus of its efforts.
Gloria's work life and her life in general was always driven forward to
successful accomplishments by her "give it 100%" attitude. For more than
10 years she was the sole operator and owner/editor of "Iowa Discover
It" quarterly magazine.
Gloria enjoyed her role as a partner with Les in the farming operations
prior to his death in 2002. She was very knowledgeable and skilled at
the tasks on the farm.
At the time of her death, Gloria had just retired due to her health as a
sales account manager for Three Eagle's Communications Broadcasting
Group where she had been employed for a number of years.
Gloria is survived by her children, Branden and Nathan Braner,
Burnsville, Minn.; her stepchildren, Les Braner Jr. and wife, Jamie, and
Michael Braner and wife, Jodi, all of Sacramento, Calif., a step-
daughter, Colleen Braner, of Massachusetts; her parents, Harley and

MASON
CITY - Anna K. Meyers, 87, of Mason City died Wednesday afternoon (Nov.
25, 2009) at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, at Our

Anna was one of 13 children born to Jacob P. and Stella M. (Brown)
Thompson on March 5, 1922 in Manly. She attended school in Mason City
and graduated when she was 64 years old. For this dedication she
received a Governor's Award. As the eldest daughter, Anna, stayed home
as many did to help care for her brothers and sisters. She later worked
for the Isolation Hospital located near East Park as a cook.
Anna met her future husband, Raymond Meyers, at the band shell in East
Park and was united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1941, in Alexandria, La.
During the war while her husband was in service, she worked at a radio
tube manufacturing plant in Salt Lake City, Utah, and then a tire
factory in California. Ray was wounded in service and over the next year
of healing she was at his side in Battle Creek, Mich., and then
Missouri. Following his discharge they moved to Mason City where their
six children were born.
Anna lived a very private and humble life being ever faithful to her
children and grandchildren along with her church. She was very active at
Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where she was a member of WELCA, the Altar
Guild, quilting group and taught Sunday school. She was a very
compassionate woman and would help anyone with anything. An example was
her working in the literacy group at North Iowa Community College. Her
number one greatest joy was taking care of the grandkids and was known
as the cookie grandma and the pink grandma because she sewed clothing
for her children and grandchildren. Anna loved following Twins baseball
and was sad every fall when the season ended but looked expectantly
towards the start of the season each spring.
She liked her life and food plain and simple, and could make a meal out
of anything she found in the house.
Those thankful in sharing Anna's life include her two daughters, Anna
Katherine (Kathy) and her husband, Richard Maas, Ellijay, Ga., Wendy
Ebbers, Tallahassee, Fla., three sons, Michael J. and his wife, Diana

DeAlda was born Jan. 17, 1917, on the family farm southwest of Rockford,

to country school, and graduated from Rockford High School in 1933.
She married Hoyle H. Ginther on Jan. 23, 1935, at the Little Brown
Church in Nashua. To this union two children were born, Marilynne
Elizibeth and Gary Lee Ginther. DeAlda and Hoyle were divorced in 1952.
After leaving the farm, she lived in Denver, Colo., and moved to Salt
Lake City, Utah, in 1959. She married Daniel Swegle in 1959. He died in
1964. DeAlda lived in Salt Lake City for 40 years until moving to
Rockford on Feb. 8, 1999, to be near her son, Gary, and his family.
While living on the farm she was often seen in the fields driving horses
that the hired man refused to drive, mowing and raking hay, etc. She
also rode her horse to round up and move their herd of cattle from one
pasture to another with just her horse to assist her. She was an
excellent horseman and enjoyed horses.

DeAlda loved to go trout fishing on the Utah mountain streams. She often
did fly fishing, wading the streams. She took all of her grandchildren
to the mountains to camp and fish when they spent time with her, some of
them spending most of their summer vacation with her.
She followed the Utah Jazz basketball team and their games. She had a
prize-winning garden in Salt Lake City and was active in a garden club.
DeAlda was active in the Holladay Community Church where she chaired the
Save For Santa Project. She turned this project into a year long
assistance program for needy families in the area.
She was instrumental in starting a used clothing room and the church,
which provided used clothing, quilts and blankets. She asked her
committee to visit the needy families each month and help them with
their problems and needs.
DeAlda enjoyed the Mormon Church choir and often took guests and her
grandchildren to Sunday services at the Tabernacle. She had many Mormon
friends in Utah.
Survivors include her daughter, Marilynne E. Gossett (Bill), of Grand
