Bonebrake
BELMOND
- Mildred "Millie" O. (Person) Bonebrake, 87, most
recently of Belmond, formerly of Winnebago, Minn.,
mother and grandmother of several Belmond area
residents, went home to be with her lord on Saturday
(Nov. 14, 2009) at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond,
surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23,
at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Winnebago, Minn.
Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Winnebago.
Visitation will begin at noon Monday at the church prior
to the service.
Millie was the daughter of PerLenius and Anna Person.
She was born Dec. 21, 1921, on the family farm 3.5 miles
west of Lone Rock. When growing up she helped her family
with chores and odd jobs. She graduated from Lone Rock
High School in 1939. Following that she worked. One of
the places she worked was Borchardt's Drug Store in
Algona. While working there she met her husband, Milo
"Mike" Bonebrake.
When he returned from World War II, they married April
6, 1947. They moved to Winnebago in November 1949 and
she lived there until 2007, at which time Millie moved
to Belmond to be closer to family. Millie was a woman
who understood the value of hand work. During her time
in Winnebago, she was a very active woman. Not only did
she raise four children (Steve, Ronald, Carol, and Sue)
and cared for her husband, she also worked and
volunteered.
Some of the places she worked include the Florence
Hotel, Dick's Cafe, Winnebago Hospital as a cook, Super
Value, and finally Electro-Craft when she retired in
1986. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Legion
Auxiliary, Food Pantry and various other duties.
However, Millie did much more than just work during her
time here. She had many hobbies and past times. She
loved to garden and preserve the produce where her
amazing abilities in the kitchen flourished. Everyone
raved about her pies! Many of her grandchildren will
especially remember her rose bushes. She was an avid
baseball fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago
Cubs.
She made the most beautiful afghans, doilies and quilts.
She also loved to spend time with her family. Their
company meant more to her than anything on this earth.

John Edward
Buck
BRITT
- John Edward Buck, 59, attorney and farmer of Britt,
passed away at his home Saturday, the 7th of November,
2009.
John was born to Erwin L. and Mary Louise (Trulson) Buck
Feb. 3, 1950. He graduated from Britt High School before
furthering his education at the University of Illinois -
Champaign-Urbana where he received his certification in
Airframe and Power Plant Mechanics, along with his
mechanics inspector's authorization. His passion for
flying and interest in the field of aviation led him to
Western Michigan University where he earned his
bachelor's degree in transportation.
John always embodied an adventurous spirit and following
graduation embarked on a plane trip with three close
friends to explore the West Coast from the southern tip
of Baja California at Cabo San Lucas to the far north of
Barrow, Alaska.
He entered law school in 1973 and while attending also
instructed ground school courses at the airport. In 1976
he was invited by a good friend to move to Nome, Alaska
for work as a flight instructor. He and Robin
Baumgartner, who later that year became his wife,
hitch-hiked to Illinois to fetch a small airplane that
they ferried up to Nome to embark on this opportunity.
In October of 1976 John and Robin returned to Iowa City
and John completed his studies at the law school, as
well as continuing his work as a flight instructor
locally. He finished law school in 1977 and passed the
bar exam at the beginning on 1978. At that time he
became one of ten people in the United States to hold a
mechanic's certificate, inspection authorization and law
degree.
Later that year he and Robin moved to Britt. The couple
had two children, Sarah in September of 1978, and Seth
in February of 1981. In 1983 John was offered the
position of General Manager at Bering Air and the family
was once again retlocated to Nome.
In October of 1983 the family returned to the Britt
area. John had an insatiable appetite for learning and
as a result prospected many occupational pursuits which
included in-house legal work and research and
development for the Britt Tech Corporation, founding
Kinetics, a wooden propeller manufacturing enterprise,
and practicing law with his father, independently, and
later with partners and friends, Dave Fenchel and Paul
Doster as Fenchel, Doster and Buck of Britt and Algona.
John was an avid conservationist involved with Ducks
Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, served as a Hancock County
Soil Commissioner, and engaged in sustainable and
organic farming practices as well as the reconstruction
of natural wetland and tallgrass prairie habitat on his
acreage.
His interested and abilities spanned a broad spectrum,
and in this manner he brought people from many walks of
life together. His presence will be greatly missed by
many.
John is survived by his daughter, Sarah, son, Seth, and
grandson, Timothy, all of Crystal Lake, Iowa; sisters,
Kathryn Buck, and friend, Mark Russell, of New York, NY;
Nancy, and husband, Al Wilcox of Valrico, FL; Sandy, and
husband, Bob Ehrig of Nevada, IA; and Janine Rawlings of
Marshalltown, IA; and brother, Andrew, and wife,
Michelle Townsend of Galena, IL; as well as numerous
cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
A gathering in celebration of John's life is being
planned by Seth and Sarah to take place in the spring of
2010 when the waterfowl migrate through North Iowa, a
time that was always very significant for John, and will
take place at the family's farm.

Hartwig. He was baptized in St. Luke Lutheran Church,
Nora Springs, on June 21, 1928, and reaffirmed the faith
of his baptism through confirmation, April 1941.
He was a devoted and active member of St. Luke Church,
serving on the council, teaching Sunday school and
working on many projects of the church.
DeVere was a 4-H Club leader in Rock Grove Township and
was on the Nora Springs Medical Corp. to find a doctor
for Nora Springs and served on the council of the Nora
Springs Elevator.
His mother died when he was five years old and his aunt,
Lola Hartwig, came out to the farm and helped his dad
raise him and his sister, Virgene. He graduated in 1945
from Nora Springs High School.
When he was 19, he made his own tractor from parts
salvaged from around the farm and junk yards with no
training in mechanics or welding.
DeVere met his wife, Gloria Jost, in Mason City and they
were married Aug. 19, 1949, at the First Christian
Church, Mason City. They farmed for 40 years and retired
to Mason City in 1989.
His hobby when he retired was rebuilding a 1931 Model A
Ford. They rode it in many parades. DeVere loved being
with his family boating and skiing at Halverson Park in
St. Ansgar and Clear Lake in earlier years.
During his retirement years, they enjoyed many winters
with friends in Arizona and loved helping his children
with projects in their homes. His faithful companion,
his German shepherd, Rommel, gave DeVere many happy
hours both on the farm and when he retired to Mason
City.
The family would like to thank Good Shepherd Health
Center and Hospice of North Iowa for the care and loving
concern they gave DeVere.
H. DeVere will be sadly missed by his wife, Gloria, of
Mason City; two sons, Dennis (Linda) Hartwig of Mason
City and Daryl Hartwig of Eldora; and one daughter,
Debra Tozier of Mason City; granddaughters, Angela (Dan)
Bublitz of Nora Springs and Hollie Toppin of Osage;
grandson, Christopher Madigan, of Lutz, Fla,; nine
great-grandchildren; sister, Virgene Druschel, of Eau
Claire, Wis.; brother-in-law, Dr. R.C. (Ruth) Jost, of
Clear Lake; many nieces and nephews.
DeVere is preceded in death by his parents; infant
brother, Eugene; granddaughter, Amber Hartwig; uncle,
John Hartwig; niece, Edith Druschel Boehm; and several
aunts.
