BELMOND
- Beverly Ann (Diers) Curtis, age 68, of Rowan, passed
away Wednesday (Nov. 18, 2009) at the Belmond Medical
Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
Funeral services for Beverly Curtis will be held at 1
p.m. today at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in
Belmond. The Rev. Nils Hernandez will officiate. Burial
will take place in the St. Francis Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the
church.
Beverly, the daughter of Clarence and Elda (Jandl) Diers,
was born June 27, 1941, at St. Ann's Hospital in Algona.
She grew up in the Bancroft area and graduated from
Bancroft St. Johns High School in 1959. Bev then
attended business college in the Twin Cities. Following
business college, Bev moved to the Washington, D.C.,
area where she worked at the Pentagon for the U.S. Navy.
Bev was united in marriage to Clifford Curtis on Dec.
20, 1960, in Alexandria, Va. The couple left the D.C.
area and raised their family in the Lakota and West Bend
areas. The family moved to Rowan in 1974. Bev worked at
Aldinger's Market in Alexander, then in 1983 went to
work at North Iowa Woods.
Bev was an avid sports fan. She loved to attend Hawkeye
football games and could always be found at her
grandkids' sporting events. Not only being an
instrumental part of the Belmond-Klemme Wrestling
Booster Club, Bev was an active supporter of Belmond
Klemme athletics in general. She could always be found
working in the concession stands at Belmond- Klemme
sporting events. She also enjoyed bowling and was a
collector of Beanie Babies and Precious Moments.
Bev was a faithful member of the St. Francis Xavier
Catholic Church in Belmond. She served an active role in
the Catholic Daughters of The Americas, having held the
position of Grand Regent.
Bev is survived by her husband, Clifford; children,
Donna Bruns (Dave Taylor) of Crystal Lake, Theresa
Curtis (Larry Heaberlin) of Rowan, Valerie (Rodney)
Nelson of Renwick, Spencer (Laura) Curtis of Grimes and
Wesley Curtis of Iowa City; grandchildren, Jeconiah,
Elijah, Alisia, Cody, Megan, Tanner, Logan, Dylan, Alex,
Andy, Cole, Owen and Olivia; great-granddaughter, Kylee;
brothers and sisters, Donald (Kathy) Diers of Algona,
Duane (Joyce) Diers of Fairmont, Minn., Jerry Diers of
Bancroft, Marie (Terry) Cook of Burt, Patricia (Bob)
Miller of Sauk Centre, Minn., and Bonnie (Ed) Layher of
Brandon S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents.

CITY - Marlys Jean Schroeder, 66, Mason City, died
Wednesday (Nov. 18, 2009) at the Muse-Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City surrounded by her family.
A memorial service for Marlys will be held at 1 p.m.
Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore
Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with
the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.
Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. on
Sunday and one hour prior to service time on Monday at
the chapel.
Marlys Jean Schroeder was born on March 9, 1943, in
Rockwell, the daughter of Ralph and Nellie (Nielsen)
McLaughlin. She attended and graduated from St. Joseph
Catholic High School in Mason City. After completing her
schooling Marlys moved to Minneapolis, Minn., and worked
for Honeywell Corporation for several years.
Marlys was united in marriage to Ralph Schroeder on July
18, 1968, in Minneapolis, Minn. After their marriage,
Marlys worked for the National Steel Company in
Minneapolis before moving to Mason City where she worked
for Easters County Market and Hy-Vee West in Mason City
in the customer service department, retiring due to ill
health.
Marlys enjoyed playing bingo and going to her
grandchildren's school activities.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ralph
Schroeder of Mason City; her children, Linda (Todd) Rush
of Mason City, Sheri Schroeder of Mason City, Jeanie
(Ben) Walswick of Mason City and Richard (Misty)
Schroeder of Manly; five grandchildren, Nick and Cortni
Rush, Drew and Kelsey Walswick, and Kadin Schroeder; a
brother, Martin (Marilyn) McLaughlin of Omaha, Neb.; her
devoted and loving dog, Brutis; as well as many other
extended family members and friends.
Marlys was preceded in death by her parents; brothers,
Marvin and Merle McLaughlin; and two sisters, Mary Ellen

-Constance Martha (O'Connor) Stetson, age 68, of
Belmond, passed away Tuesday (Nov. 17, 2009) at the
Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City.
Funeral services for Constance Stetson will be held at
10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at the St. Paul
Lutheran Church in Latimer. Pastor Marvin Lorenz will
officiate. Burial will take place in the Belmond
Cemetery.
Visitation for Constance Stetson will be held from 5 to
7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at the Dugger Funeral
Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and will
continue one hour prior to services at the church on
Monday.
Constance, the daughter of James and Elsie (Daniels)
O'Connor, was born Nov. 8, 1941, in Belmond. She grew up
in the Belmond area where she attended schools. Coni
attended Stewart Beauty School in Sioux City and was a
beautician for a period of time.
Coni was united in marriage to Richard Stetson on Sept.
2, 1959, in South Sioux City, Neb. To this union three
children were born, Daryl Lynn, Michael and Stephanie.
With Richard being in the Marine Corps, the family lived
in many areas around the world, finally settling in Fort
Dodge.
Coni loved caring for her home and was a great mother.
There wasn't anything she wasn't successful at. She was
especially talented at cooking and baking. With her
vibrant personality, Coni loved to have fun. She always
enjoyed spending time with her family and friends,
especially her girlfriends Sharon, Karen and Merideth. A
spontaneous woman, Coni would take a vacation at the
drop of a hat. She had a great love for animals,
especially horses.
Coni was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in
Latimer. Throughout her life, she taught Sunday School
and served in various capacities in the church.
Coni is survived by her children, Daryl Lynn (Derek)
Ridgeway of LeMars, Michael Stetson of Belmond and
Stephanie (Jim) Nelson of Belmond; her mother, Elsie
Meyer, of Belmond; grandchildren, Richard and Nicole
Ware, Angelina and Michael Stetson Jr., and Danielle
Nelson; brothers, Michael (Ruth) O'Connor of Long Beach,
Calif., and Robert (Bonnie) O'Connor of Stockbridge,
Ga.; and numerous nieces and nephews, relatives and a
host of friends.
She is preceded in death by her father; husband; and a

Al was born on Dec. 18, 1917, in Freeport, Ill., the
fourteenth and last survivor of seventeen children of
Otto and Jenny Burkart. He was raised in Dubuque and
graduated from Drake University with a degree in
pharmacy. While in Des Moines, he met and married his
life-long companion Gretchen, who passed away in 2001.
The family located to Mason City in 1946, moved away
briefly in 1956, and returned for good in 1960. He
worked as a pharmacist at Ford Hopkins Drugs, Casey's
Prescription Shop, and the Park Clinic Pharmacy (later
North Iowa Medical Center).
He was a tireless worker and didn't slow down after
retirement, traveling and continuing his hobby of
woodworking. For over fifty years he volunteered at the
Community Theatre, building sets and even taking to the
stage when the cast needed a grumpy old man.
As recently as 2007 he held two volunteer jobs - as a
guide at Music Man Square and as a radio show host on
KCMR. He participated in the senior exercise class at
the YMCA for the last 26 years and went dancing most
weekends with his special friend, Edith Nichols.
Al was, above all, an excellent grandfather. He enjoyed
spending time with his grandchildren, whether it was
reading to them in his rocker or taking them to his
favorite places. Al was very involved in his
grandchildren's lives. He took them to work with him, on
vacations, and to the theater. He enjoyed making toys
for his grandchildren and in recent years enjoyed
spoiling all his great- grandchildren.
Al is survived by four children, John and wife Barbara
of Salt Lake City, Utah, Terry of Sun Prairie, Wis.,
Michael and wife Ann of Cedar Rapids and Julie True of
Mason City; nine grandchildren, Matthew (Jeanne) Burkart,
Jill Burkart (Hampton Finger), Jackson (Kim) Burkart,
Stephanie True Moon, Eric (Tara) True, Sara (Adam)
Gutierrez, Stacey True, Shawn True, and Shelby True;
nine great-grandchildren, Garrette, Blake, Resse,
Alexandra, Adan, Kyan, Leila, Maleah, and George.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gretchen; parents;
siblings; and three grandchildren, Christopher and
Amanda Burkart and Chad Moon.

LAKE - Gwendolyn "Gwen" Gladys Othelia Ouverson, of
Clear Lake, died Friday (Nov. 20, 2009) at the Oakwood
Care Center, Clear Lake.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov.
24, at the Fertile Church of Christ, with Pastor Dennis
Ganz officiating. Inurnment will be in the Grant
Township Cemetery, rural Clear Lake.
Family will greet friends one hour before the service.

Gwen was born on April 1, 1932, to Hans and Anna (Dahle)
Lien rural Fertile. She was raised on a farm near Joice,
and graduated from Joice High School in 1950.
Gwen married Curtis Ouverson on July 15, 1950, at the
Little Brown Church, Nashua. They were best friends and
constant companions for over 59 years.
Children born to this union were a son Lowell and a
daughter Linda.
Curtis and Gwen lived on a farm near Fertile for over 57
years, before moving to Apple Valley Assisted Living, in
September of 2007, and then both moved to Oakwood Care
Center, Aug. 2009.
Gwen was baptized on Oct. 20, 1950, at the Church of
Christ Fertile. She strongly believed in salvation
through Christ Jesus. She taught Sunday school and sang
in the church choir for many years.
Gwen graduated from Mason City School of Cosmetology in
1964 and operated Gwen's Beauty Salon for several years.
She was also a homemaker and a patient, loving care
giver. She cared for her mother-in-law Helen Ouverson in
her home for nearly two years. She also cared for
husband Curtis after a stroke in 2001; she continued
that care in some capacity, until the she died. It was
an example of enduring love for those who witnessed. She
also worked at Oakwood Care Center for a few years in
the 1980s.
If Gwen were writing this, she would want to thank her
daughter-in-law Susan Ouverson and the special care
givers at Apple Valley Assisted Living and Oakwood Care
Center for the love and compassion she was shown.
During all her health struggles she never complained,
she kept sight of her heavenly goal. She was a wonderful
wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, who
will be missed and loved until we meet again in the
great and wonderful place that the Lord has prepared for
those who believe in Him.
Gwen is survived by her husband Curtis, resident at
Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake; her son Lowell Ouverson
and his wife Susan, Clear Lake; her son-in-law Harold
Brunsvold, Kensett; five granddaughters: Alissa (Eric)Kruger,
Kensett, Briana (Mike) Frank, Kensett, Callie (Jeff)
Schmidt, Crystal Lake, Shaina Brunsvold, Kensett and
Amanda Ouverson, Ames; two great granddaughters: Payten
Lynn Kruger and Addison Lee Frank both of Kensett; and
three sisters: Lovenea Groe, Lake Mills, Arlene (Ray)
Schlader, Louisville, Ky., and Enid (Arlen) Wogen,
Vancouver, Wash.
She was preceded in death by parents; daughter Linda
Ouverson Brunsvold on Dec. 28, 1995, and a
brother-in-law Lester Groe.

Frederick John Halbach was born on March 27, 1919, near
Stacyville, the son of Nicholas and Rose (Brumm) Halbach.
He attended Visitation Grade School and graduated from
Visitation High School.
On Nov. 26, 1942, Fred married Marcella Gerhartz in
Meyer. They farmed east of Stacyville. Fred and Marcella
retired and moved to Stacyville in 1980, and moved to
the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in 2006. He was on
the Board of Directors of the Stacyville Creamery and
was a member/secretary of the Mitchell County Fair
Board. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of
Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Fred volunteered
in 4-H, church, and school activities. He enjoyed
hunting, fishing, bowling, woodworking, gardening, and
traveling.
Fred is survived by two daughters, Mary R. Clements of
Hayward, Calif., Lynne A. Fairbanks of Marion, Ill.; a
son, Nicholas W. Halbach of Hayward, Calif.; a sister,
Bertilla Mullenbach of Rochester, Minn.; a
sister-in-law, Louise Halbach of Osage; two
brothers-in-law, Clem Gerhartz of Harpers Ferry, and
Wilfred Gerhartz of Owatonna, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife,
Marcella Halbach in 2007; sisters, Olive Hemann, Irene
Kinney, and Margaret Stolzenberg; and brothers, Raymond,
Wilfred, and Alois Halbach.

Jackie fought a courageous battle with cancer ultimately
losing in a hospital near her home in El Dorado, Calif.
She was proud that she had been raised in Mason City,
Iowa, and that she graduated in 1967 from Mason City
High School.
A memorial service is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday,
Nov. 24, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302
Fifth St. S.E. in Mason City, with a luncheon following
in the church hall.
Jackie dearly loved her family and friends and requested
that her life be celebrated with a party. This party is
scheduled for all those that knew and loved Jackie at 5
p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 24, at The Other Place, 125 First St.
S.E., Mason City.
Those left behind to cherish her memory include her
husband of 42 years, Bob Rye; her daughter, Traci
Kendrick, of Dayton, Ohio; and daughter, Missy
Alexander, of El Dorado, Calif. Traci and her husband,
Don Kendrick, gave Jackie two wonderful grandchildren,
Katherine (15) and Robert (13), while Missy and her
husband, Chris Alexander, gave her three more, Savannah
(15), Blake Thomas (10), and Kacey (6). Jackie is also
survived by her sister, Sandy Holt, of Mason City;
brother, Gary Thornbury, of Universal City, Texas;
sister, Barb Meeker, of Elkhart, and numerous extended
family and friends residing all over our wonderful
country.

City.

Michelle was born on Aug. 13, 1956n in Pittsburgh, Pa.,
the daughter of Stanley and Millicent (Hinich) Bielik.
Michelle graduated from high school, and later attended
college receiving her accounting and business management
degree, before moving to Buffalo, N.Y.
She was united in marriage to Paul Morgan.
Michelle lived in Florida for three years before moving
to California, where she lived for 25 years.
She was united in marriage to the love of her life,
Kevin Lee.
Michelle had always been in the food business as a
general manager to many restaurants, and moved to Mason
City, becoming the manager of Pizza Hut, and later moved
to Lubbock, Texas, and was the manager at Pretzel Maker,
before being transferred to Minnesota, where she
continued to managed the Pretzel Maker.
She was united in marriage to Albert Urrutia and had
step-children; twins Derek and Erick, and Ashley, and
had her own pet-grooming business out of her home, and
later moved to Ankeny and became the manager of Perkins.
Michelle has always had a love of animals, especially
birds, dogs, cats, and rats. Michelle was never able to
have her own children, so she always adopted animals.
She had many throughout her life.
Michelle was very professional, worked very hard, and

She was energetic, bubbly, funny, and giving. She loved
music, especially Pink Floyd.
Her illness brought her back to Mason City in April of
2009.
She is survived by her husband Albert and three
stepchildren, Eric, Derek, and Ashley, of Lubbock,
Texas; her dog, Fraline, and bird, Duncan; her aunt Tina
Hinich and family of the Chicago area; cousins, Michael
Hinich, Jr., and family of the Chicago area, Kathy
Norman and family of the Chicago area, and Patrick
Hinich and family of California; her niece, Vicki
Partridge and family of Minnesota; her uncle Harvey
Schauf of Mason City; aunt, Nancy Walters of Mason City;
and cousins, Cindy Pettit of Mason City, and Dawn and
Doug Barragy and family of Mason City; and many friends.

Iris Ruth Abele, the daughter of Albert and Esther
(Moll) Abele, was born on Dec. 10, 1917, on a farm near
Garner. She graduated from Garner High School in 1935
and continued her education at Waldorf College in Forest
City. Iris worked at the Hancock County A.S.C.S. office
in Garner for a number of years and later worked
part-time at the Hancock County Extension office. She
enjoyed office work, gardening, yard work and house
work.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in
Garner.
Iris is survived by two sisters-in-law, Beryl Abele of
Garner and Bonnie (John) Osnes of Forest City; a
brother-in-law, Calvin Voigt of Crystal Lake; and many
nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers,
Elmer and Loren Abele; and a sister, Lois Voigt.

Phyllis, the daughter of John and Carolina (Gartz)
Halfpap, was born on Dec. 3, 1918, east of Belmond on
the family farm. She grew up in the Belmond area, where
she attended school. Phyllis graduated from Belmond High
School as class valedictorian in 1936. She taught at
Halfwassen No. 1 and Pleasant Township No. 8 country
schools for several years.
Phyllis was united in marriage to Andrew Boelman on
Christmas Day, 1940, at her parents' home. To this union
three children were blessed through adoption: Kim, Brent
and Netha. They were, truly, the greatest joy in her
life.
Phyllis was an integral part of the family farm. She did
everything - raising chickens, milking cows, helping in
the fields, raising a garden and canning, preserving the
harvest.
Phyllis had many interests and hobbies. She loved to
travel. Andrew and Phyllis traveled throughout the
United States as well as abroad. Phyllis had the
pleasure of travelling to both Hawaii and Germany. The
couple also enjoyed their fishing trips together. She
sewed and made beautiful quilts. Phyllis was interested
in geneology and photography. Phyllis loved music and
was a talented musician. She played the piano, flute and
organ. Phyllis played the organ for many area churches.
She also taught Sunday School for a time.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Kim (Beth) of
Slater, Brent (Sheri) of Meservey, Netha (Brian) Wisa of
LeMars; grandchildren, Joshua (Jessica), Adam, Dena,
Tarah, Andrew (Heather), Jessie (Tanya), Tracy (Holden),
Thomas (Jessica), Morgan, Lauren, Joy, Jordan, Jacob,
Brian, Joseph; great-grandchildren, Emma, Elizabeth,
Adrianna, Carter, Ezra, Makayla, Koby, Taryn, Kyler; a
brother, Kenneth Halfpap of Belmond; two sisters,
Shirley (Carl) Kuhlers, Ruth Pals, both of Belmond; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Andrew
in 1984; son, Andrew John; grandson, Nathan; great
grandson, Blake; and sisters Marvyl and Jessie.

- Vera Mae Halfman Walsh, 74, of Osage, ended her
earthly journey on Monday (Nov. 23, 2009) at the
Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit,
surrounded by her family.
Vera was born on June 18, 1935, in Stacyville, Iowa, the
daughter of George and Helen (Hartogh) Halfman. She
attended Visitation High School. On May 24, 1955, she
married Ivan Walsh at Visitation Catholic Church in
Stacyville. Vera was employed by Osage Community Schools
as a cook for 26 years.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and
Guild. Vera was a faith-filled woman with many
interests, including cooking, baking, Bible study,
theater musicals, loving babies, and spending time with
friends, family, the camping crew, and the birthday
group for over 40 years. She enjoyed playing dominoes,
reading, shopping, and "stitch 'n bitch". Vera lived
life to the fullest, especially these last seven months
with the diagnosis of acute myelogenous leukemia.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.,
Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Osage with The Rev. John Moser officiating.
There will be rosary at 10 a.m. at the church before the

Jack Gerald Meggers was born June 2, 1924, in Rowley,
the son of Clarence and Kathryn (Murphy) Meggers. He
graduated from Independence High School in the class of
1941 and continued his education for one year at junior
college. Jack was united in marriage to Bobbie Bukacek
on Nov. 24, 1945. To this union seven children were
born.
Jack was a game warden for 32 years, serving Cerro Gordo
County from 1961 until his retirement in 1985. He was a
lobbyist for the Game Wardens for the State of Iowa.
Jack was chief of police at the North Iowa Fair Grounds
for 17 years for the races and fair. For several years
he had his own talk radio show "Outdoors with Jack
Meggers" on KGLO.
Jack was an avid reader his favorite author being Louie
L'Amour. He also enjoyed watching Westerns; one of his
favorites was "Bonanza". Jack also enjoyed hunting,
fishing and telling stories about his life. Jack was a
devoted father, husband, grandfather and
great-grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Jack is survived by his children, Jackie Nelson and her
husband, Dale Waynick, of Greensboro, N.C., Larry
Meggers of Lansing, Rob Meggers of Yankton, S.D., Becky
(Mark) Kramer of Mason City, Shelley (Dave) Lambert of
Minneapolis, Minn., Tom (Tammy) Meggers of Burt, and Jim
(Mary) Meggers of Mason City; grandchildren, Scott and

Cathy was born Aug. 9, 1954, in Mason City, the daughter
of Clyde and Shirley (Bacon) Neel.
Cathy graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1972 and
then graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in
1976 with a degree in education. She taught one year at
Storm Lake. She worked for the Iowa Workforce
Development for more than 25 years in different
locations, ending up in Des Moines as a manager of the
Unemployment Insurance Division.
Cathy believed in furthering her education and was only
three classes short of her master's degree.
She enjoyed reading, playing games, cooking, baking,
doing crafts and gardening. She loved spending time with
her family and considered her nieces and nephews her
children.
Cathy was certified as a PHR (Professional in Human
Resources) and SPHR (Senior Professional in Human
Resources). She was extremely proud of it. She passed
the very difficult exams the first time.
Cathy is survived by her mother, Shirley Neel, of Clear
Lake; her siblings Steven Neel of Hinckley, Minn., David
Neel and his wife, Lori, of Mason City, and Nancy McCoid
and her husband, Mike, of Manly; her nieces and nephews,
Alaina (Jed) Hollenkamp, Ben Neel, Jared Neel, Danielle
(Jeremy) Corcoran, Jessica McCoid, her friend Landon
Ausdemore and Nicole McCoid, and great-nieces and
nephews, Logan Corcoran, Owen Neel, Kayla Hollenkamp and
Brianna Hollenkamp.

Sandra "Sandy" Kay Nowlin was born on Aug. 6, 1940, in
Mason City, the daughter of Bennie and Alicia (Johnson)
Hagen. Sandy attended and received her education in the
Northwood Community Schools. She was united in marriage
to Raymond Oleson on Dec. 8, 1956. After their marriage,
Sandy was a stay-at-home loving wife, and mother. Sandy
began her career as a certified nursing assistant on May
24, 1977, for the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood,
where she continued to work for 29 years until her
retirement in September 2006.
Sandy will always be remembered as a loving and caring
certified nursing assistant.
She was united in marriage to Thomas Nowlin on July 5,
1993, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.
Sandy enjoyed gardening, flowers, gambling in Las Vegas,
and loved and enjoyed her family, friends and her cats.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Roxy
(Rick) Gordon of Plymouth, Shelly (Pete) Apel of Rudd;
her grandchildren, Heather Gordon of Plymouth, Nathan
Gordon of Mason City and Matthew Gordon of Plymouth;

MASON CITY - Boyd P. Stroud, 51, of Mason City died
Monday (Nov. 23, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North
Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at
Victory in Christ Free Methodist Church, 604 24th St.
S.W., with Pastor Larry Day officiating. Interment will
be held in Grandview Cemetery in Hannibal, Mo., at 1
p.m. Monday, Nov. 30.

Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

CHARLES
CITY -Charles L. Vandeventer, 48, of Charles City died
Monday (Nov. 23, 2009) at Floyd County Medical Center in
Charles City of a heart attack.
Funeral services for Charles Vandeventer will be held
10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S.
Main in Charles City, with Pastor Michael Downey of the
Evangelical Free Church, officiating. Burial will be in
Riverside Cemetery at Charles City. There will be a flag
presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Hauser
Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. until service time on
Saturday.
Charles Lamont Vandeventer was born in Charles City on
Nov. 7, 1961, the son of Edward and Evelyn (Coomer)
Vandeventer. He attended Charles City Schools and in
1979 during his senior year he quit high school and
joined the Marine Corps. He later received his GED and
an AA degree in security administration.
During his 12-year-stint in the USMC he was stationed in
many places around the world. While stationed at Camp
Pendleton, Calif., he met his future wife, Linda
Valencia, and on October 12, 1984, they were married in
Garden Grove, Calif. After his release from the military
he became involved in the security business, eventually
owing his own security business, CLV Statewide Security
in Garden Grove, Calif. He was also a special
investigator for the Garden Grove Police Department.
Due to health issues he sold his business in 2004,
retired and returned to Charles City.
Chuck loved to fish and during the years he lived in
Charles City you would often see him fishing with his
brother-in-law, Bill, at the Beauty Dam or at the Bend.
He was a devoted Miami Dolphin fan beginning with the
team's inception in the late 1970s. He also enjoyed
watching NASCAR and playing pool. He shared a special
bond with his little dog, Taco.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda
Vandeventer of Charles City; a son, Charles Vandeventer
II and a daughter, Evelyn Vandeventer, both of Charles
City; a grandson, Brandon Vandeventer; two sisters,
Kathy (Tim) Gerkins of Oakley, Calif., and Chris (Bill)
Tonn of Charles City; a brother, Ed (Sheila) Vandeventer,
of Nashua; adopted sister, Kathy Vandeventer, of
Minneapolis; uncle and aunt, Larry and Norma Carver of
Mason City; an aunt, Ella Vandeventer, of Charles City;
and high school best friend, Eric Dell of Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant
brothers, Ronald and Donald Vandeventer; daughter,
Rosana Cortinas in 2007; and uncle, Ray Vandeventer.
