Darlene A. "Dee"
Leaman
MASON
CITY -Darlene "Dee" A. Leaman, 77, of Mason City, died
Tuesday (Nov. 10, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice
Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial celebration will be held from 2 p.m. until 4
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, in the fellowship hall of
St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 First St. N.E., with
the Rev. Wendy Abrahamson officiating.
Friends are invited to come and share memories with
family and each other.
Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or
Una Vocis.
Dee was born on Feb. 26, 1932, to Edward E. and Anna (Sodawasser)
McNary in Mason City, the second of five daughters. She
and her sisters Jean Schutz (Earl) of Mason City,
Jeanette Ream (Jack) of Omaha, Shirley McNary of Mason
City, and Susan Bruns (Clarence LeRoy) of Northwood and
her cousin Herold Cook of Mason City were always very
close.
She married Jack Leaman in 1952 and they have four
children: Jeffrey (Holly Briggs), Danna (George Greene),
Jay (Kristine) and Duree (Ross Wyatt). There are eight
grandchildren: Caree (Cass) Davis, Kaylin (Jason)
Bosworth, Brett (Mandi) Ries, Tiffany (David) Lauer, Ted
(Crystal Nielson), Larke, Nick and Tyvon.
Great-grandchildren are: Jaycee Scholl, Tyler, Kallon,
and Jaydin Bosworth; Carter and Colden Davis, and
Charlee Nielson.
Dee graduated from Mason City High School (Class of
1950), studied at Santa Barbara City College, the
University of Iowa, North Iowa Area Community College
and Iowa State University, where she completed a
bachelor's degree with honors in sociology in 1980.
Language, reading, teaching and learning were a rich
part of her professional, community and family life,
which she delighted in sharing with others: she studied
Spanish and taught English as a second language to
Spanish-speaking immigrants to the United States; she
was a literacy tutor and worked as a librarian at Mason
City High School, Albuquerque Public Library, Colorado
Springs public schools, MacNider Art Museum, and
Hamilton College in Mason City. She was a long-standing
member of Mason City's Monday Club.
She shared her passion for books and reading with her
children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Genealogy was both a professional and personal interest.
As a librarian, she loved helping with family history
research, and she spent a lot of time researching her
own family history. Not coming to a finishing place was
one of her few regrets.
Outside of her family and her work, she volunteered much
of her time and enthusiasm to church, school, and
broader community activities and causes. While her
children were growing up she was much involved in church
and Sunday School, Scouting, and the P.T.A. She
supported her musical grandchildren through the
Instrumental Music Boosters Board of Mason City High
School.
She was an active member of the MCHS Alumni Association,
the League of Women Voters, and N.O.W. As one of the
founding members of the Mason City Foundation, she had
an instrumental role in the preservation and restoration
of the Meredith Willson Boyhood Home and development of
The Music Man Square.
Dee lived in Mason City until she married Jack. She
created warm and welcoming homes for her family and
friends wherever they lived: Ames (1952-1954), Denver,
Colo. (1954-1955), Bartlesville, Okla. (1955-1958),
Santa Barbara, Calif. (1958-1966), Mason City
(1966-1973), Des Moines (1973-1975), Iowa City
(1975-1977), Mason City (1977-1979), Ames (1979-1981),
Albuquerque, N.M. (1981-1985), Colorado Springs, Colo.
(1985-1990), returning to Mason City in 1990.
The home she and Jack made together on Sunset Lake in
Mason City is a cherished and happy gathering place for
family and friends. She was happy to be home again.

TereseAnn
Lynch
GARNER

at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Wenceslas Catholic Church,
Duncan (rural Britt) with Father Brian Dellaert and
Father Henry Huber officiating. Burial will be in St.
John's Catholic Cemetery, Bancroft, with military honors
conducted by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard of
Omaha, Neb.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today (Sunday) at

beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour
prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the Iowa Air National Guard has set
up a memorial fund for TereseAnn Lynch's son, Levi. You
can mail donations to: Chief Master Sgt. Mark Louw,
132nd Fighter Wing, 3100 McKinley Ave., Des Moines, IA
50321.
TereseAnn Marie Lynch was born Dec. 7, 1978, in
Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Tim and Shelia
(Richards) Lynch. She grew up in the Garner and Duncan
areas, graduating from Garner-Hayfield High School in
1998. TereseAnn attended Kirkwood College and graduated
from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City and
obtained her bachelor's degree at Iowa State in 2003.
Family, along with serving as a technical sergeant in
the Iowa Air National Guard, was always dear to
TereseAnn's heart. She had family members that fought
for this country and TereseAnn carried on that family
legacy. She went on to serve three tours of duty
overseas, most recently coming in 2008 when she was
deployed to Iraq. It was something she always held in
the highest of regards. She also cherished the time she
spent with her family, especially her son, Levi, who was
born March 31, 2009. During her best times and during
her worst times, Levi was her source of strength. He was
the one that kept her upbeat and the one that kept her
going. Whatever life held in store, she always made sure
he was her top priority.
TereseAnn worked in the field of family services for the
past 10 years, most recently for the Department of Human
Services in Des Moines. She was an avid runner and she
enjoyed the outdoors but loved spending time with
friends and family above all else.
TereseAnn is survived by her son, Levi; her mother,
Sheila Lynch of Kerrville, Texas; her father and
step-mother, Tim and Pauline Lynch, of Duncan; a sister,
Kathleen Hill, and her partner, Tracie, of Austin,
Texas; two brothers, Michael Lynch of Ames and Richard
Lynch and Rachel Ruppert of Garner; her nieces and
nephews, Blake, Zachary and Kacie. She is also survived
by a stepsister, April Henn, and her husband, Tyler, of
Buffalo Center; a stepbrother, Charlie Goll, of Dows;
stepnephews, Clayton and Ethan; her maternal
grandmother, Marcyl Ferguson, of Aurora, Colo.; her
aunts and uncles, Duane Richards of Crowley, Texas,
Keith Richards of White Sands, N.M., Gina Richards of
Austin, Texas, Mary Menke and her husband, Don, of
Indianola, Ellen Schiltz and her husband, Rob, of
Urbandale, Teresa Geitzenauer and her husband, Jim, of
Mason City, Anne Vaske and her husband, David, of
Urbandale, and Carol Patterson of Fairmont, Minn.; as
well as many cousins and special friends.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Edward,
in infancy; her maternal grandfather, George Richards;
and her paternal grandparents, Robert and Florence
Lynch.
