Marvyl Loree Patton

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Marvyl Loree Patton, age 83, of Golden Valley, formerly of Waseca, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2006) at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

Born in Mason City, Iowa, on May 12, 1923, she was the daughter of Loren and Miriam (Smith) Beck. Following high school she attended Mason City Jr. College, where she met her future husband, William (Bill) Patton. Bill referred to her as his “corn-fed cutie.” She later received a master’s degree in social work from the University of Minnesota.

Bill and Marvyl were married on Dec. 8, 1945, and moved to Waseca in 1951, where they raised their four children. Although she worked only a short time in her professional field of social work, her life was dedicated to serving others; and by her living example, Marvyl shared her Christian faith with everyone. Marvyl had a spark and vitality which shone with every encounter.

In Waseca, Marvyl was active in the Child Study Club, the School Advisory Committee, the Waseca Day Activity Center, the Waseca Cub Scouts, Waseca Girl Scouts, and the First Congregational Church. She was instrumental in bringing the Make Today Count support group to Waseca and in the origination of the I Can Cope support group. Always a lover of nature and the out-of-doors, Marvyl taught a horticulture class at the U of M, Waseca, and instilled her love of and respect for nature in her Cub Scout and Girl Scout work.

In 1985 Bill and Marvyl moved to Covenant Village in Golden Valley, where Marvyl was involved with the American Cancer Society and the Coalition for Death Education and Support. She volunteered at the North Memorial Medical Center, and she also acted as the editor of Covenant Village’s newsletter, “In a Manor of Speaking.” Marvyl also wrote two books about her experience of living with cancer: “Guide-Lines and God-Lines for Facing Cancer,” and “Help from Human Holy Jesus.”

Marvyl is survived by four children: Paul (Barb Pierson) Patton of Golden Valley; Daniel (Sara) Patton of Cold Spring, Patti (Jerry) Ellingson of Waterville, and Robert (Linda) Patton of Ocoee, Fla. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Pat Beck, of Mesquite Texas; and one brother-in-law, John Patton, of Blue Earth. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one brother, Willard Beck.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at 1 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Waseca, with Rev. Jon Marburger officiating. Burial will follow at Woodville Cemetery in Waseca.
