Lyla P. VanHorn

SHEFFIELD — Lyla P. VanHorn, 64, of Sheffield, Iowa, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, Dec. 18, 2006. She passed away at the Mercy Surgery Center in Mason City, Iowa.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, 2006, at Zion Reformed Church, rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Arthur J. Zewert and the Rev. Virgil Dykstra officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, 306 Central Ave. E, Hampton, Iowa.

Memorials may be given to the Lyla P. VanHorn Memorial Fund.

Lyla was born Aug. 4, 1942, in Rockwell, Iowa, to William Raymond and Pearl Mabel (Stock) Donaldson. She graduated from the Chapin High School in 1960, and later received her degree from Hamilton Business College. She was united in marriage to her grade school and high school sweetheart, Myron VanHorn, on Sept. 9, 1961, in Hampton, Iowa.

Lyla worked as a secretary in the Human Services Department for Franklin County. Her family then became her priority, and she became a full-time homemaker and partner with her husband in the farming operation.

Lyla was a member of the Zion Reformed Church. She faithfully served for more than 50 years as a church organist. In addition, she served as choir director, accompanist, Sunday school teacher, vacation Bible school teacher and a church secretary for 25 years. She willingly served in many leadership positions within the Reformed Church Women’s Ministries. In 1993 she was named an Honorary Life Member of the Reformed Church Women.

Having courageously battled cancer since 1993, Lyla was an active participant in the Franklin County Relay for Life, and organized the luminaria display and ceremony for a number of years.

She enjoyed sharing her gift of music within the community by playing the organ, piano and accordion. She appreciated the beauty in all of God’s creation as she tended her vegetable and flower gardens. Vacationing with her husband in Branson and Florida were also special times. She lived each day with a thankful heart.

Lyla had the gift of hospitality and a servant’s heart, and treasured the times spent visiting her many dear friends. Most of all, Lyla adored her husband and cherished moments spent with her family, especially her granddaughter and grandson.

Lyla is survived by husband Myron, Sheffield; son, Bradley and wife, Brenda, Sheffield; cherished grandchildren, Melanie and Jonah; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Mikesell, Urbandale; mother-in-law, Fandelene VanHorn, Sheffield; very dear friend, Maxine Kite, Hampton; brothers-in-law, Duane and wife, Dixie, West Des Moines, and Vernon and wife, Audrey, Latimer; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and beloved son, Brenton Jay.

ALLISON — Wilma Pauline Fitch, 84, of Allison, died Monday (Dec. 18, 2006) at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at the St. James Lutheran Church in Allison with the Rev. Jeffrey A. Blank presiding. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Allison.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at the Forest City United Methodist Church, 305 S. Clark, Forest City, Iowa, with the Rev. Jerald Swanberg officiating.

Norma ‘Esther’ Edgington

MASON CITY — Norma “Esther” Edgington, 72, formerly of 1203 S. Virginia Ave., Mason City, died Wednesday afternoon (Dec. 20, 2006) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City with family.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with Pastor Steve Palo officiating.

Cremation has taken place at Cremation Services of North Iowa in the care of Fullerton Funeral Home. A private inurnment will take place at a later date in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

A memorial visitation is planned from 9:30 a.m. until time of Esther’s services on Saturday.

Norma Esther Edgington was delivered into the world on Feb. 7, 1934, in Mason City. She was the sixth of nine children born to Carl F. and Eva (Dennis) Wolff. Esther was baptized as a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Esther was employed in the housekeeping department at Mercy Medical Center-N.I. for 10 years, retiring in 1988. She had also worked at Mode-O-Day for five years. Esther was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Senior Citizen’s Center.

On Aug. 4, 1954, Esther was united in marriage to John Mathias Edgington Sr. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. Due to John’s employment, the couple lived in Sparks, Nev., for a short time, then moved back to Mason City. They became the proud parents of a son, John M. Edgington Jr.

Esther is described as a serious, quiet and private person. Her highest priority was caring for her husband and son and spending time with her siblings and their families. She enjoyed traveling to visit her family in Michigan and California, being outdoors, going to dances, reading romance novels, painting pictures, fishing and baking. Esther was lovingly known for baking the best banana breads. She often stated that she preferred to be busy and rarely had “idle hands.”

Esther is survived by her son, John M. Edgington Jr. of Mason City; her sisters, Dorothy Bohl, Lila Paulsen and Margie Swann, all of Mason City, and LaVonne LeMoines of Napa, Calif. She will also be dearly missed by her sister-in-law, Betty Wolff, of Mason City; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Esther in death are husband, John M. Edgington Sr., in July of 1972; her parents, Carl and Eva Wolff; her sisters, Gertrude Sandahl and Iline Wold, and her brothers, Warren and Robert Wolff.

Doris Moore Crider

GRANBURY, Texas — Doris Moore Crider, 83, died Saturday (Dec. 9, 2006) in Granbury, Texas.

Her funeral was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Wiley Funeral Home. Burial was in Holly Hills Memorial park. Visitation was held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the Wiley Funeral Home.

Doris Janet Moore was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Rockford, Iowa, to Harry and Tilda Moore. Her entire childhood was spent in Rockford, graduating from high school as well as joining the Methodist Church.

After graduation, she married Clyde Crider from nearby Mason City, and soon joined him in Corpus Christi when he began his naval training. Their son, Calvin, was born in Corpus Christi.

Mr. Crider soon saw duty on an aircraft carrier and during his absence Doris and baby son made their homes in Phoenix, Ariz., Mason City, and Charles City.

After Mr. Crider’s Naval service, they joined friends in Fort Worth and made Texas their home in all ensuing years.

Doris began employment with Western Union in 1946 and worked at the downtown office for 22 years, as well as an additional five years with the company in the main office in Houston.

After her retirement and a move to Granbury in 1978, she worked 10 years in the collection department of the Hood County Appraisal District office in Granbury.

In earlier years, she was active in the PTA, was a longtime member of the Commercial Telegraphers Union, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and AARP.

She greatly enjoyed her family members in this area, as well as occasional trips to Iowa to visit family and friends.

One of her fondest interests was staying in touch with former co-workers and long-ago friends, some friendships dating back to the 1940s.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Clyde.

Survivors include her son and his wife, Calvin and Janis Crider, of Granbury, Texas; sister and husband, Ruth and Don Freiberg, of Charles City; brother and wife, John and Louise Moore, of Mason City; grandsons, Alan Crider and Andy Crider and wife, Monica; great-grandson, Nathan Crider, all of Fort Worth, Texas; five nephews; and two cousins.

OSAGE — Elgy Wegner, 90, of Osage, died Tuesday (Dec. 19, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center Hospice Unit in Osage.

Opal Freeman

MASON CITY — Opal Freeman, 81, of Mason City, died Thursday (Dec. 21, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at the Church of Christ, 710 N. Kentucky Ave., with the Rev. Alan Sheldon officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Opal was born Feb. 14, 1925, in Green Castle, Mo., the daughter of John I. and Mary (Norris) Walters. She attended rural schools near Green Castle. Opal was united in marriage to Paul R. Freeman on Jan. 15, 1942, in Eldora. They made their home in Mason City where they raised three children.

She enjoyed cooking for others, church, reading, gardening, crossword puzzles and singing. She greatly enjoyed the companionship of her pets. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of Church of Christ in Mason City and Ladies Church Group. She was on the board of RSVP for four years, cooked and served for the Community Kitchen, was formerly involved in the PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and was a den mother for the Cub Scouts.

She is survived by her children, Jerry Freeman and wife, Sandra, of Minneapolis, Minn., Scott Freeman and wife, Janet, of Urbandale, and Paula Harms of Bolingbrook, Ill.; six grandchildren: Rachel, Aaron, Tony, Brian, Jessica and Jacob; three great-grandchildren: Daniel, Elizabeth and Taylor; and one sister, Ruby Green and husband, Wendell “Pat,” of Mason City.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul, in 1988; one grandson, Todd Harms; six brothers and four sisters.

Kirk A. Kral

MASON CITY — Kirk A. Kral, 43, of 138 12th St. N.W., died Wednesday (Dec. 20, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Kirk A. Kral was born Aug. 21, 1963, in Mason City, the son of Clarence and Diana (Paulsen) Kral. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1981. After high school, Kirk attended NIACC in Mason City and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Mankato State University in 1986, majoring in political science with a minor in geography. He continued his education at Mankato State University taking graduate courses until 1990. Kirk was employed by Wal-Mart in 1991 and continued working there until the present time.

Kirk married Sara Roe on Aug. 27, 1994, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua; to this union three children were born. He enjoyed photography, traveling, reading, history, and most of all spending time with his children. He was a very proud father and loving husband.

Kirk is survived by his wife, Sara; children, Ty, age 7, Emma Rose, age 4, and Andrew, age 2; grandmother, Mary Kral, of Blair, Wis.; parents, Clarence and Diana Kral, of Mason City; brothers, Kevin Kral and wife, Kym, of Wellman, Chris Kral of Latimer, Kai Kral of Mason City; mother-in-law, Martha Shahan of Clear Lake; father-in-law, Roger Roe and wife, Zsuzsa, of Budapest, Hungary; brother-in-law, Eric Roe, of Clear Lake; sisters-in-law, Angela Gauden and husband, Matt, of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Alison Roe of Mason City; nephews, Kale, Josh, Jeremy, Jacob, and Nathan; and one niece, Paige.

Kirk was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Rosemond Paulsen and James Kral.

Cheryl was born March 10, 1936, the daughter of Julius T. “Ted” and Marie (Benz) Willadsen in New Hampton, Iowa. Cheryl graduated from New Hampton High School in 1954. She attended and graduated from A.I.B. Institute in Des Moines. She moved to Mason City and worked where she met her husband, David, and was married. She later worked in the office of a contractor in Clear Lake, the office of Drs. Larson and Powell and later for Mason City Clinic until she retired in 2001. Cheryl also worked part time for the Clear Lake Library after her retirement.

She was a board member of Clear Lake Library and North Central Regional Library.

Cheryl enjoyed knitting, reading, genealogy, playing computer games, World War II and Western movies on DVD.

Cheryl was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Cheryl is survived by her three children, Mark and Keith Hanson of Clear Lake and Julie Hanson of Ames; several nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Lou Willadsen of Merritt Island, Fla., Betty Blick of Sultan, Wash., Jo Ellen Carpenter of Clear Lake, Joyce Stille of Swaledale, and Bonnie Hanson of Clarksville, Ga.

Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David; two brothers, Roger and Lorne Willadsen; and sister-in-law, Joyce Willadsen.

Carolyn Ann Juhl

CLEAR LAKE — Carolyn Ann Juhl, 80, of 8161 315th St., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2006) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, Iowa, with the Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton, Iowa.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa, and then one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church. The family suggests memorials to Carolyn Ann Juhl Memorial Fund.

Carolyn was born on May 21, 1926, in Tampa, Florida, the daughter of William Jefferson and Mattie (Stewart) Maloy. Her parents died at her age of three and she was raised by relatives and friends of the family.

She graduated from Thornton High School in 1945 and attended La’ James School of Cosmetology. She worked in Mason City.

Carolyn married Dallas L. Juhl on April 10, 1949, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. They lived in Thornton where she operated her beauty shop until 1952, and then they moved to Mason City, where she also operated a beauty shop. They lived in Mason City until 1980. She and her husband then moved to their present home north of Clear Lake.

She enjoyed doing ceramics, gardening, canning, and going for rides, casinos, camping, her animals and especially taking care of her grandchildren.

She was a member of Clear Lake Am Vets and St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mason City, Iowa.

Carolyn will be sadly missed by her seven children: Lois Kremer and her husband, Don, Fairfield; Sue Okones and her husband, Steven, Des Moines; Steven Juhl and his wife, Arla, Mason City; Randy Juhl, Clear Lake; James “Duff” Juhl and his wife, Barbara, Mason City; Kent Juhl, Clear Lake, and Dana Hinnenkamp and her husband, Mark, Hanlontown, Iowa; ten grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Clarence Maloy; and husband, Dallas.

Herbert K. Vick

GREENE — Herbert K. Vick, 88, of Greene, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2006) at the Liebe Care Center, Greene.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City with the Rev. James Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue at the church on Thursday one hour before the service.

MASON CITY— Gertrude H. Peterson, 91, of Evergreen Estates II, Cedar Rapids, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids.

Pastor Arden H. Backman

OSAGE — Pastor Arden H. Backman, age 94, of Osage, died Thursday (Dec. 21, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Whalan Lutheran Cemetery at Whalan, Minn., at 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

Visitation is from 4 until 6 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Arden was born on Sept. 11, 1912, at Whalan, Minn., the only child of Dwight and Isabel (Gullickson) Backman.

He was baptized and confirmed at the Whalan Lutheran Church and graduated in 1929 from high school in Lanesboro, Minn. He graduated from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, in 1933, and from the Luther Theological Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., in 1937. On June 20, 1937, he was ordained at Whalan, Minn.

He married Cornelia Reitan on August 9, 1942, at Hoff Lutheran Church, in rural Moorhead, Minn.

Pastor Backman served 17 congregations in seven parishes at Maxbass, N.D., Bainville, Mont., Whitefish, Mont., Circle, Mont., Wykoff, Minn., Lime Springs, Iowa, and Carpenter, Iowa.

Pastor Backman was extremely proud of the fact that seven of his confirmants became ministers or missionaries.

He retired and moved to Osage in September of 1978. He enjoyed making jewelry from agates that he found and was a talented softball pitcher.

Pastor Backman is survived by his wife, Cornelia Backman of Osage; one daughter, Afton (Russell) Duenow of Fredericksburg, Va.; three sons, Dwight Backman of Sparta, Wis., Charles Backman of Osage, Stephen Backman of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Bradley, Bjorn, and Corbin Backman, Bryan and Victor Duenow; and three great-grandchildren, Gunnar, Kai, and Colton Backman.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

CLARION — Harold Klemensen, 80, of Clarion, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2006) at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Helen M. Jensen

TEMPE, Ariz. — Helen M. Jensen, 91, of Tempe, Ariz., passed away Monday (Dec. 18, 2006) in Tempe.

Helen was born on March 18, 1915, in Yankton, S.D., but moved with her family as a young child to Mason City, Iowa.

She and her husband, Henry, lived in Mason City and Hampton for a number of years before moving to California and then to Arizona in 1994.

She was preceded in death by her husband Henry.

Helen is survived by her daughters, Donna Clausen of Tempe, Ariz., and Barbara Peeples of Midland, Texas; a sister, Josephine McCoun, of Mason City; along with seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private service was held in Tempe, Ariz. and Helen will be laid to rest next to Henry at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glendale, Calif.

Corine Lucille Cowell

OTRANTO — Corine Lucille Cowell, 87, died Thursday, (Dec. 21, 2006) at Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar with the Rev. Roger Tornes officiating. Burial will be at First Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006 from 4 until 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Corine Lucille Cowell was born on July 2, 1919, in Mitchell County, south of St. Ansgar, to Iver and Maria (Halverson) Dahl. She was educated in a one-room school until the eighth grade, and graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1938.

Corine was united in marriage to Derald Raymond Cowell on Nov. 11, 1945, in Nashua. She worked in the grocery business for more than 40 years in St. Ansgar. Her unique charm and clever wit endeared her to grocery store customers for more than 48 years. Corine liked to crochet, garden, and bake. She was best known for cinnamon rolls and waffles. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. Most of all, Corine adored her husband and cherished moments with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harley, and her beloved husband, Derald.

Corine is survived by children: Karen (LeRoy) Bolding, Plymouth, Dean (Sue) Cowell, Kensett, Avis Bartz, Northwood, Janet (Jerry) Billick, Mason City, Jim (Laura) Cowell, Stacyville; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
