Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to the services Saturday at the church.

Robert V. Nelson, the son of Martin and Caroline (Hefte) Nelson, was born Oct. 2, 1920, on his parents’ farm near Hayfield. Bob was the eighth of 14 children in the family. He attended and graduated from Hayfield High School with the class of 1938.

Bob’s family was very important to him and he looked for any opportunity to spend time in their presence. Whether it was a family gathering, spending time with them on the farm or spectating at one his grandchildren’s or great-grandchildren’s activities, he could be found cheering them on. He also looked forward to coffee outings with the gang at the hardware store in Belmond.

Those left to remember Robert’s life include his son, Robert D. Nelson and wife, Charlene, of Belmond; granddaughter, Marietta and husband, Brad Bittle, and their children, Ian Bradford, Maeve Catherine and Caroline Joy Bittle, all of Chesapeake, Va.; grandson, Matthew Nelson and wife Christina, and their children, Aaron Robert, Marcus Michael and Abigail Lorraine Nelson, all of Belmond; brothers, Dale and wife Duann Nelson, of Santa Barbara, Calif., Harold and wife Doris Nelson, of Belmond, and Roger and wife Barbara Nelson, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and a sister, Velva Draper, of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Keith Bailey, of Tacoma, Wash., Eunice Christenson and husband Lloyd, of Belmond, Avis Hopkey, of Belmond, Opal Ellingston, of Belmond, and Ray and Becky Ellingston, of Belmond; also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.

Robert was born on May 25, 1928, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Elmer D. and Etta Mae (Stone) Darg. His early education was at a rural school near Lakota and later at Rockwell. He started in the farming business by driving a creamery route for a year or so and then worked for State Brand Creamery for about 10 years. Serving those two entities led to some of his favorite pastimes, which included socializing with area farmers at the elevator and reminiscing and visiting with neighbors.

He worshiped and adored the time that he spent with his grand and great-grandchildren. Early in life, he would ride his Indian motorcycle with his soon-to-be wife. Over the years he collected miniature trains of which many were HO scale. He and Hazel would travel all over to various flea-markets and auctions just to see what they could get a deal on.

Andrews Funeral Home of Belmond is in charge of all funeral arrangements.

Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial, card, or other expression may send those expressions to Ann’s husband, Douglas F. Lee, 512 First Street S.E., Belmond, IA 50421.
Ann Kloberdanz, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Mauer) Kloberdanz was born on Dec. 11, 1921, at Britt, the seventh of nine children. She was baptized and confirmed at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City and attended Holy Family Church Elementary and High School.

In early adulthood, Ann took on the responsibility of helping to care for her ailing mother and assisting her father in caring for her siblings. She was later employed as a bookkeeper for a cleaning service in Mason City for a time. Her people skills, salesmanship, and meticulous eye for fashion and clothing led to her career of more than 17 years in sales at the Style Shop in Mason City. Her warm and friendly personality and knowledge brought repeat clients from miles around.

On May 5, 1948, she was united in marriage to Douglas F. Lee at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. This union was blessed with two daughters, Debbie and Laurie.

Following their marriage, the couple resided in Mason City where Ann’s career at the Style Shop continued, while her husband Doug joined his father in the construction business.

In 1949, Ann and Doug decided to build a lake cottage on the southside of Clear Lake for summer get-aways. In 1958, the couple made their cottage in Clear Lake their permanent home and worked as a team in remodeling and expanding it. They have lived there since.
In 1958, the couple purchased and renovated a closed bowling alley and coffee shop in Ventura and operated it under the name of “The Village Inn.” Ann and Doug turned the restaurant into one of the premiere steakhouses in the region, along with a thriving bowling operation. In 1968 they sold the business and its name was changed to what is known today as “The Colony Inn” in Ventura.
Following retirement from the restaurant, Ann became a full-time mother and house wife to her two daughters and husband, although she occasionally worked part-time at Clear Lake clothing stores and for the schools, while her husband returned to his business known as Lee’s Construction, Inc.

Ann and her husband loved to attend farmers’ markets and her delicious pies and pastries were treasured by numerous customers around the area. Many knew her as “The Pie Lady.” Her desserts and salesmanship made her the top seller on many occasions, even receiving media recognition for rapid sellouts at the markets.

She was always busy seeing to the needs of her family with love, kindness, and devotion. She was a meticulous housekeeper, always making sure everything had a place.

Her hobbies were numerous including, crocheting, sewing, collecting, saving, and raising lovely gardens, both vegetable and flower, as well as taking an excursion to play the slots. She loved shoes and clothes and always had to be sure everything coordinated.

Ann absolutely relished going shopping and planned for Christmas and buying gifts for her family throughout the entire year. She truly was a devoted mother, wife, grandmother, mother-in-law, and sibling. She cherished each and every opportunity to be with her family, no matter what the occasion.

She always wanted to make sure that everyone else’s needs were taken care of before her own. For many years she and Doug, and Laurie, traveled to Chatsworth, Calif. to visit Debbie and help with work around their property. They also took family journeys to various other places. Ann also looked forward to family camping trips, teaching her girls etiquette, and golfing, and had loved the times she had in seeing the Pope and Jimmy Carter.

She and her husband loved to dine out and go ballroom dancing. For the past 12 years they operated the Red Barn Antiques and Craft Store in Clear Lake.

Ann loved her church and was a devout Catholic. As a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church she would help with providing and serving of food at funerals and on other occasions. She was always there when needed by her children, whether it was covering the funeral home phones for Laurie and Tony, watching the grandpets, or helping out with Debbie and Dale’s various activities on their ranch in Clear Lake.
For the past nine and one-half years, she was one of the best grandmothers that one could ever ask for, surrounding her grandson, Zachary, with countless expressions of love and devotion. Their love and bond was nearly inseparable.

Those who knew Ann well, will remember her as gentle, yet stubborn in her own ways. She was somewhat quiet on first acquaintance, but warmly received those who were in her presence calling them by first name. She was a lady’s lady.

Her family will truly miss their relationship with Ann as a devoted wife of 58 years, loving mother, and loving Grandma Ann. They will cherish memories of delectable dinners and desserts, and all the fun and love shared with her at gatherings, celebrations, and other occasions.

They will miss her companionship, tender care, and the daily conversations shared with her on the phone or in person as well as her loving support as the number one cheerleader in everything that they did.

Those left to cherish the legacy of her life and mourn her death include her husband of more than 58 years, Douglas, F. Lee, of Clear Lake, currently residing with his daughter, Laurie at 512 First Street S.E., Belmond, daughter, Debbie Anderson and husband, Dale, Clear Lake; daughter, Laurie Andrews and husband, Tony, Belmond, and her grandson, Zachary Andrews, at home with his parents in Belmond; a brother, John Kloberdanz and wife Jo, Uba City, Calif.; very special relatives, Margaret Lee; Doug H. “Dude” Lee and wife, Phyllis, all of Mason City; also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son “Baby Boy Lee”; four brothers, Frank, George, Peter, and Joseph; and two sisters, Margaret and Pauline.

Ann’s family would like to express their sincerest thanks to all who cared for Ann during her battle with cancer and prayed for her and her family. Words cannot express their gratitude for the love and support that they have received.

Special thanks to her daughters for the countless trips in taking Ann to her many treatments. They can not put into words how special the care was given by the North Iowa Hospice Team and the terrific crew at the Belmond Medical Center who made sure Ann and her family’s needs were attended to. And to all their friends who sat with her and them during her decline.
