ALLAN D. ‘BUTCH’ SCHAEFER

ROCKWELL — Allan D. “Butch” Schaefer, 53, of 8730 Partridge Ave., Rockwell, died Thursday evening (Aug. 26, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 502 S. Second St. in Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger officiating. Inurnment of Allan’s cremated remains will be at 5 p.m. Sept. 7, 2004, in St. Peter Cemetery, rural Coulter.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services today at the church.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa or the Critical Care Unit of Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Allan Douglas Schaefer was born July 30, 1951, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mason City to Alene M. (Lillibridge) and August H. Schaefer. He was the youngest of six children born to his parents.

“Butch,” as he was fondly known by his family and friends, was raised on the family farm near Rockwell and was active in 4-H during his youth. While in high school, Butch played football and graduated in 1969 from Augustana High School in Canton, S.D. He lived most of his life in Rockwell and was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.

On April 2, 1975, Butch was united in marriage to Lana K. Sutter at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter. They became the parents of a daughter, Sara. Though the couple later divorced, they remained great friends and maintained a mutual respect and admiration for each other.

Butch’s love of animals, the outdoors and livestock was evident throughout his life. He enjoyed buying and selling livestock, attending sales, always searching for bargains, going for long drives and the fall season, including trips to orchards.

Due to ill health, Butch became disabled. He had been employed as an over-the-road trucker, most recently with K & B Transportation of South Sioux City, Neb.

Butch invited his mother, Alene, to travel with him in his truck so she could view the country perched high in the seat beside him. She was over the age of 80 and the rides across the USA and Canada fulfilled her special dream to travel.

Butch’s family describes him as a “big guy with an even bigger heart!” He was always willing to assist anyone in any capacity and lived life to the fullest.

Many of his friends and relatives will remember Butch as a “people person” who was very generous, compassionate and sometimes emotional.

He would often stop by the floral shops to pick up or order bouquets, “just because,” and deliver them to those he wished to brighten their day.

Some of Butch’s favorite leisure activities and interests included listening to classical music, dining at a wide variety of restaurants on “good food,” especially ham and beans or steak, and watching western movies.

Butch was an avid fan of John Wayne and a collector John Wayne memorabilia.

His greatest joy in life was being near and spoiling his daughter, Sara. He treasured the time he spent with her and his entire family, especially having fun with the small children.

Butch will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter, Sara Schaefer of Ames; his mother, Alene Schaefer of Rockwell; his sister, Sandra Shank (Warren) of Outer Banks, N.C.; his brothers, Carol (Klar) Schaefer of Rockwell, Merlin (Donna) Schaefer of Mason City, Larry (Elaine) of Rockwell and Dale (Lana) Schaefer of Rockwell. He will also be sadly missed by his former wife and friend, Lana K. Schaefer of Mason City; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Butch in death were his father, August H. Schaefer, in October 1975; and his father-in-law and special friend, Nyals Sutter.
