NORTHWOOD — Inez A. Enerson, 92, formerly of 1212 Marks Hill Road, Northwood, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2004) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Monday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen of the First Lutheran Church and the Rev. Robert Luebbert of the Northwood Baptist Church co-officiating. Burial will be at the South Shell Rock Cemetery in rural Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Conner Colonial Chapel, 99 11th St. S., Northwood.

The family requests that memorials may be left to the Lutheran Retirement Home, the First Lutheran Church for the radio broadcast, or to the South Shell Rock Cemetery.

Inez Aletta, the daughter of Carl and Oline (Mathiason) Nelson, was born Dec. 15, 1911, in rural Freeborn County, Minnesota. She attended various rural schools in Worth County.

After her schooling, she helped her family on the farm. She also worked in Northwood as a housekeeper.

Inez was united in marriage to Ernest Enerson in June 1937 at the First Lutheran Parsonage. The couple farmed the home farm in rural Northwood for over 45 years.

Inez also worked as a cook in several restaurants in Northwood.

In 1963, the couple started in the egg production business called “Triple E”, which was also known as Enerson’s Egg Emporium. Ernest died in October of 1982.

In December 1984, Inez married Egon Jensen in the First Lutheran Church, Northwood. The couple continued to run Triple E. Inez entered the Lutheran Retirement Home in April 2000, where she has resided since, and Egon passed away in May 2000.

Inez was an excellent cook and will always be remembered for her meatballs and lefse at the First Lutheran Church lutefisk dinners.

Inez’s greatest love was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She also enjoyed playing card games such as 500 and whist, gardening, sewing, and crocheting until her eyesight failed her.

She was a very active member of First Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school and held several offices in the various women’s organizations.

As well as being a member of First Lutheran Church, she and Egon regularly attended Sunday services at First Baptist Church of Northwood.

She was a member of the Albert Lea Eagles Club, a 4H leader for several years and she was also a judge for the Worth County 4H Board.

Inez is survived by her daughter, Joan Johnson and her husband, Gordon, of La Crosse, Wis., three granddaughters and their husbands, Susan and Dan Leifer of La Crosse, Sara and Peter Platten of Green Bay, Wis., and Kristin and Joe Hoeth of La Crosse; five great-grandchildren, Megan Leifer, David Leifer, and William Hoeth all of La Crosse, and Peter Platten and Katherine Platten of Green Bay. Also surviving is one brother, Maurice Nelson of Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Selma Gerszewski of Northwood, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Ernest Enerson; her second husband, Egon Jensen; three sisters, Selma, Mabel, and Sena; and seven brothers, Christ, Axel, Casper, Helmer, Norman, Clarence, and Alfred.

LAWRENCE H. HAGEN


PLYMOUTH — Lawrence H. Hagen, 81, of Plymouth, formerly of Thornton, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2004) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.

Funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton, with the Rev. Robert Hetrick presiding. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Visitation will be noon until the time of service on Saturday at the church.

Lawrence H. Hagen was born July 30, 1923, in LeRoy, Minn., son of Lauritz and Henrietta (Bergen) Hagen. He was raised and received his education in the LeRoy area.

Lawrence was united in marriage to Seydell Floy on March 15, 1953, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton. They farmed in the Thornton area for years and their farm will be honored as a Century Farm at the Iowa State Fair.

Lawrence was well known as a collector of antique cars and tractors and would receive inquiries regarding these from a four-state area.

He was a “Horse Trader” in the finest sense of the word, and his handshake was his bond.

Though confined to a wheelchair for the last months of his life, Lawrence could always make you smile with his wry sense of humor.

Those grateful for having shared his love and this humor are his children: son Rick (Marlys), of Anchorage, Alaska; daughters, Roxanne (Jack) Page, of Plymouth; and Tammy (Scott) Schroeder, Spring Branch, Texas; nine grandchildren: Eryka, Kelsi, Leif, Kirsten and Karen Hagen, Staff Sgt. (USAF) Darren (Amy) Page, Holly Page, Christopher and Elizabeth Schroeder; brother, Richard (Judy) Hagen, of Albert Lea, Minn.; sister-in-law, Bonnie Hagen, of Northwood.

Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents and brother Herbert.

DEBRA M. MARTIN


FOREST CITY — Debra M. Martin, 50, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Sat-urday at the First Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Edward Bard officiating.

Memorials may be given to the Debra Martin Memorial Fund in care of Eldon Martin, 425 West “I” St., Forest City, IA 50436.

Debra May Martin, the daughter of Travis and Lauralie (Packer) Walker, was born Nov. 18, 1953 at Chicago, Ill. She grew up in Iowa and graduated from Rockwell-Swaledale High School.

On April 25, 1978, she was married to Eldon Martin at Irving, Texas.

Debra was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest.

She loved writing poetry and short stories. She also enjoyed cooking.

Debra’s greatest joy came from being with her husband, and children. She considered her grandchildren to be the greatest blessing in her life.

She was an amazing, loving and caring woman who will be missed deeply by all those who were fortunate enough to know and love her.

She is survived by her husband, Eldon, of Forest City; three daughters, Tina Martin of Forest City, Angella Russell of Forest City and Brenda (Steven) Sinclair of Forest City; nine grandchildren; her father, Travis (Mary) Walker of Dyersburg, Tenn.; six sisters, Lynda (Ralph) Mugan of Kilgore, Texas, Tammy Mugan of Hampton, Sherry Dietz of Texas, Gail Brookfelt of California, Anita Ward of Dyersburg, Tenn. and Amy Hill of Dyersburg, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her mother, grandparents; and her sister, Patty Ahmed.

May God keep her in his loving, peaceful arms forever.

RAKE — Gladys Woodwick, 81, of Rake died Thursday (Aug. 5, 2004) at her home in Rake.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Rake with the Rev. Larry Rehlander officiating. Interment will be at Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W., Buffalo Center, and one hour before the service at the church.

Gladys Maxine (Geerdes) Woodwick was born to Matthew and Grace (Harringa) Geerdes on March 27, 1923, in a farmhouse, four miles south of Germania (Lakota), Iowa. She spent most of her childhood there.

She was baptized and confirmed at Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka. She received her education in rural country schools through the eighth grade.

Gladys left home at age 15 to work as a hired girl at more than 50 homes over the years.

She worked very hard cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, chores and taking care of children in all of the homes.

She also worked at Van’s Café in Algona, and at the café in Rake for Inger and Ed Sunde.

Gladys was united in marriage to Leonard Woodwick on Sept. 7, 1959, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakota, Iowa.

She will be missed for her kind and loving spirit and for her strong faith, which carried her through the trials of life.

She is survived by three daughters: Joyce and husband, Dennis Tweeten of Rake; Connie and husband, Dennis Clay of Blue Earth, Minn., and Sandra Woodwick of Spirit Lake; her son: Greg Geerdes of Rake; her grandchildren: Jackie Bromeland of Mankato, Minn., Elias Bromeland of Freeborn, Minn., Ben Bromeland of Rake, Jesse Clay of Mankato, Minn., Laura Clay of Spirit Lake and Amy Grace Clay of Blue Earth, Minn.; her great-granddaughter, Hannah Aasum of Mankato, Minn.

Also surviving are her sister, Velma and husband, Bill Gerdes of Woden; and her brother, Dwayne Geerdes of Rake; as well as many special nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend and neighbor, Doris Erickson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Maynard.

NEW HAMPTON — Jean C. Steenblock, 78, of New Hampton died Thursday (Aug. 5, 2004) at Lake City Medical Center in Lake City, Minn., of a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in New Hampton, with the Rev. Mary Hatch presiding. Interment will be in New Hampton Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as casket bearers.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton with a 7 p.m. prayer and Scripture service. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Jean Caroline Steenblock was born Oct. 22, 1925, at Ladysmith, Wis., the daughter of Lloyd and Esther (Bechtel) Boos.

The family moved to Camby, Minn., and later settled in Fertile, Iowa, where she graduated from high school.

Jean was married to Dale V. Steenblock on April 20, 1945, at the Reformed Church in Meservey.

Following their marriage they lived and farmed near Goodell, and later near New Hampton where they farmed until their retirement. They moved to New Hampton in 1978.

Jean was employed at St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton and later worked at Great Plains Supply for a number of years.

She enjoyed playing cards and crocheting.

She was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, Food Pantry, Order of Eastern Star, the Women’s Fellowship and Bible Study at her church and also enjoyed being active at the Chickasaw Senior Centre.

Jean is survived by a son, Randall (Kathy) of Ingram, Texas; three daughters, Delores (Greg) Stibal of Cedar Falls, Judy (Don) Jenn of Omaha, Neb. and Gloria (Gary) Hoth of Lake City, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, James (Florence) Boos Sr. of New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dale, on June 19, 1998; a sister, Dorothy Sanderson; and three brothers, Donald and Jerry Boos and Robert Robinson.

TITONKA — Funeral services will be held for Sandra Lee Sleper, 61, of Titonka at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church in Ledyward, with the Rev. Victor Vriesen officiating. Interment will be in Highland Home Cemetery in Ledyard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Bancroft.

Sandra Lee Sleper was born on Jan. 20, 1943, at Blue Earth, Minn., to Ervin and Doris Brock Johnson. She graduated from the Ledyard High School in Ledyard, Iowa, in 1961 and then attended business school in Omaha, Neb.

After her schooling, Sandy worked for a bank in Fairmont, Minn. She was married to Eldean Maschoff on Aug. 24, 1963, at Ledyard, Iowa. The couple farmed near Northrop, Minn., for a time and then lived in Marshall, Minn., for a few years.

They moved to Crystal Lake, Iowa, in 1973, where Sandy worked for the Manufacturers Bank and Trust in Forest City, Iowa. She became director of banking services.

Sandy was married to Russel Sleper on July 28, 1984, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.

Russel and Sandy lived near Titonka, Iowa, and Sandy continued to work at the bank in Forest City until her health failed in December 2003.

Sandy was a member of the Bethany Evangelical and Reformed Church in Ledyard.

She enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing softball.

She also enjoyed cooking, shopping, dancing, playing cards and horseback riding.

Sandy was a dedicated Hawkeye fan.

Sandy died on Thursday (Aug. 5, 2004) at the Mercy Hospice/Johnston at Johnston, Iowa, at the age of 61.

Sandy is survived by her husband, Russel Sleper of Titonka; and her children, Michael Maschoff and wife, Deann, and Lisa Escherich and husband, Brian, all of Ankeny. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Alex, Jacob, Tyler, Drew and Ellie Maschoff, and Megan, Sam and Anna Escherich; and four brothers: Steve Johnson and wife, Kathy, of Mesa, Ariz., Ron Johnson and wife, Denise, of Bedford, Va., Bill Johnson and wife, Sandy, of Armstrong, and Gary Johnson of Fairmont, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

WILLIAM A. ‘BILL’ RUSK


BELLE PLAINE — William A. “Bill” Rusk, 83, of Belle Plain, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Aug. 4, 2004) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Graveside services officiated by the Rev. Don Drahos were held Saturday, Aug. 7, in Oak Hill Cemetery, Bell Plaine. Military Rites were conducted by Jennings-Bradshaw American Legion Post No. 39.

Bill was born on Sept. 16, 1920, in Belle Plaine to Raymond Elmer and Murldene Gaynelle (Henry) Rusk. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1939. He served in the United States Army as a corporal and served in the South Pacific from October 1942 to December 1945.

On Oct. 8, 1942, Bill married Betty Kathryn Carpenter in Vinton. To this union, two children were born.

Bill was a former railroad engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad, retiring in 1980. He loved trains and working with his hands (small woodworking). He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed going to casinos and loved his country. He belonged to the Jennings-Bradshaw American Legion and was also a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Belle Plaine.

Bill will be greatly missed by his wife, Betty; son, Garie and his wife, Linda, of Sioux City; a brother, Wilber A. Rusk and his wife, Betty, of Victor.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathie Lee; one brother, Elmer; one sister, Jean Snodgrass.

MASON CITY — Ruth E. Katter, 97, of 302 2nd St. N.E., died Thursday (August 5, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware with the Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the church one hour before services.

Memorials may be given to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Ruth was born June 18, 1907, in Hancock County, Iowa the daughter of Herman and Adeline (Greinke) Lemke. She attended rural schools in Hancock County.

Ruth married Henry Katter October 22, 1925, at Peace Reformed Church, rural Garner. Her husband died in 1937 leaving her to raise her three girls on the farm. She moved off the farm in 1950 and relocated to rural Clear Lake in 1969. She enjoyed her family and friends, life on the farm, cooking and baking, which she shared with everyone, crocheting, a strong faith in the Lord and gardening.

Ruth is survived by her three daughters: LaVonne Etchen of Mason City, Luella Etchen of Clear Lake, Rachel Pope and husband, Richard, of Mason City; grandchildren, Cheryl Etchen, Debra Nelson and husband, Mark, Laurie Etchen, Teri Larson and husband, Mark, Daniel Pope, David Pope and wife, Kristie; four great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and many friends.

Ruth’s parents; husband; son, Henry; two brothers, Paul and Otto; three sisters, Elizabeth Haes, Martha Heimendinger, Esther Meyer; and son-in-law, Merle Etchen preceded her in death.

JACKY MAAKESTAD


OSAGE — Jacky Maakestad, 68, of Osage, died Friday (August 6, 2004) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Avenue, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson officiating. Interment will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Champion – Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Jacky was born Dec. 14, 1935, in Zearing, Iowa, the daughter of John Hildreth and Ruth Justine (Bretthauer) Snowgren. She graduated from June Senior High in Marshalltown, Iowa. Jacky then attended the University of Iowa. While there she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

Following college, Jacky taught music in the Osage, Mitchell and Orchard schools.

On March 18, 1960, she was united in marriage to Edwin J. Maakestad.

An active member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Jacky belonged to the Rachel Circle and taught Cherub Choir for 34 years. She was also involved in numerous local musical events.

Jacky is survived by her husband, Edwin Maakestad of Osage; her father, John Snowgren of Osage; daughter, Nicole Maakestad of Des Moines; son, Jon Maakestad of North Liberty; and two grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her mother.

NORA SPRINGS — Esther N. Stiller, 86, of Nora Springs, died Friday (August 6, 2004) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 101 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Reverend Ruth Hansen officiating. Interment will follow at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs and also for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Esther N. Stiller Memorial Fund.

Esther was born October 15, 1917, in Nora Springs, one of nine children of Frank and Pearl (Tibbits) Weaverling. She was raised and educated in Nora Springs before being united in marriage to August Stiller on January 16, 1935, at the Methodist parsonage in Nora Springs. They farmed near Rudd and Osage before moving to a farm near Nora Springs in 1951. The couple continued to farm outside Nora Springs until 1972, when they moved into town. Esther began cooking at the dormitory kitchen at North Iowa Area Community College in 1973 and continued her work there for nearly 12 years.

Esther and August enjoyed camping, fishing, and playing cards with friends. Esther was an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress, especially fond of crocheting. She and August were members of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church and the Friendly Circle, the Wig Wam Wagon Club, and several square dancing clubs.

Left to cherish her memory are three children and their spouses; June and Richard Merriss of Rockford, Wesley and Kay Stiller of Rudd, and Patty and Dennis Holtz of Rudd; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

BELMOND— Taus John Harms, Jr., 65, the son of Taus and Cecelia (Heginger) Harms, was born January 15, 1939, at rural Garner, Iowa.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Taus Jr. passed away on Thursday (August 5, 2004) at the Belmond Medical Center and went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond. Pastor Lowell Halvorson will officiate. Burial will be at the Belmond Cemetery.

Taus had lived in the local area all of his life. He attended school in Chapin, Belmond, and Thornton. He hauled milk for the Hampton and Goldfield Creameries shortly after leaving school. On April 21, 1973, he went to work for Sukup Manufacturing Company in Sheffield. He lived in Sheffield for many years before moving to his small acreage near Belmond. He retired June 24, 2004, after thirty-one years with the company. He enjoyed working for Sukup’s and was a good and faithful employee.

Taus enjoyed playing cards and dice games, tending to his livestock, working with his International tractor, and going to casinos whenever he could.

Taus Jr. was baptized and received his first communion on July 31, 2004.

Survivors include his seven brothers; Bennie (Jean) of Mason City, Larry (Maxine) of Sanborn, Iowa, Harry (Barbara) of Hampton, Donald (Georgia) of Hampton, Ronald (Nancy) of Belmond, Jerry (Marlene) of Rockledge, Fla., Gary of Rockledge, Fla.; two sisters, Darlene (Dexter) Ewers of Mason City, and Arlene Weimann of Nora Springs; one uncle, Herman (Zelma) Harms of Forest City; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Taus Sr. in 2003 and Cecelia in l982.

BELMOND — Doris E. Musselman, 86, of Belmond, passed away Thursday (August 5, 2004) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Doris, the daughter of John A. and Augusta Jacobs Berghefer, was born June 26, 1918, in Rockwell. Doris attended school in Garner and Belmond. She graduated from Belmond High School in 1935, and post-grad high school in 1938. She then taught school in Dows for one year.

Doris was united in marriage with Glen A. Musselman of Fort Dodge in the Methodist Church in Belmond on May 5, 1940. The couple made their home in Belmond where she was employed as an aide in the Belmond Community Hospital for 17 years.

Following Glen’s death in 1965, Doris attended North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City and received her associate degree in nursing in 1970. While at NIACC she was awarded an “Oscar” from her fellow actors in a skit as part of a Variety Show. Following graduation, Doris was employed at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center until 1972, at which time she joined the Story County Public Health Nurses team.

Doris served as a Board Member of Easter Seal Society of Des Moines for four years and was on the board of the Edith Hale Child Care Center in Nevada, Iowa for two years.

Doris moved to Arkansas in 1981 but returned to Belmond in 1982, to be one of the first residents at the Redder/McLaughlin Apartments, where she was residing at the time of her death.

Doris was a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church, U.M.W. and circles. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, making quilts, traveling, working crossword puzzles, and giving presentations. Doris was active in the following organizations; Sencar, Inc. (Congregate Meals), Senior Citizens, Progress Club, Charter Member of the VFW Auxiliary, WaTanYe, Friends of the Library, Senior Cabinet of Elderbridge, Hospital Auxiliary, RSVP, and SALT.

Doris is survived by one son, Randyll Musselman and his wife, Barbara, of Brownsbrug, Ind.; three daughters, Barbara Dickerson and her husband, James, of Altoona, Iowa, Shelia Ruka and her husband, Gary of Belmond, and Cyndy McNulty of Belmond; 16 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; three sisters; Edna Kroeger of Belmond, Ina Stille of Garner, and Garnett Beenen of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen in 1965; daughter, Vicki, in 1998; grandson, David, in 1998; one sister; and one brother.

WODEN — Jean M. Smidt, 65, of Woden, died Friday (August 6, 2004) at the Westview Care Center, Britt.

Jean Marie Smidt, the daughter of Edwin and Gertie (McNeil) Hillenga and Erna (Iverson) Hillenga, the only mother she knew and loved, was born January 26, 1939 at Algona. She made her profession of faith at the Woden Christian Reformed Church. She attended the rural schools of Orthel Township in Hancock County and graduated from Britt High School in 1956. Jean continued her education at Dordt College.

On August 8, 1958, she was married to John Smidt at the Woden Christian Reformed Church. They lived on a farm north of Woden until 1964 when they moved to a farm near Burt. In 1988, they moved into Woden and continued farming. Due to ill health Jean became a resident of the Westview Care Center in Britt in 2000.

Jean enjoyed her family, designing and making cakes, reading and doing crossword puzzles.

She was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church where she taught Bible school.

Jean is survived by her husband, John, of Woden; her mother, Erna Hillenga, of Woden; two children, Deanna (Mike) Taylor of Cherokee and Alan (Teresa) Smidt of Forest City; 11 grandchildren, Mandy, Trish and Jordan Taylor and Ryan, Sandi, Julianne, Tyler, Kyle, Emily, Allison and Nathan Smidt; five brothers and sisters, Kay Hunter of Cedar, Minn., Doris (Dean) Haugland of Forest City, Edwin (Vicki) Hillenga of Wesley, Carol Clendenen of Auto, W.V. and Dean (Suzanne) Hillenga of Hobbs, N.M.; a sister-in-law, Grace Barnes of Iowa City; a brother-in-law, Warren (Bev) Smidt of Clayton, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Corma Kathryn Leach was born on a farm in Mt. Valley Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, on January 13, 1916, the daughter of Bent and Linda (Monson) Thompson. Bent came from Haugesund, Norway at the age of 19 and Linda’s parents also came from Norway.

Corma was baptized and attended Winnebago Lutheran Church where she was confirmed in Norwegian. She attended Forest City High School.

On June 6, 1931, she married Fred G. Leach. The couple resided on several farms in the Forest City area for 50 years. Corma was widowed in 1981 and happily resided at Vens Heim Apartments since 1987. She later lived for a time in Town Square Apartments until moving to Forest Plaza Assisted Living.

Corma was a full time homemaker. She loved to bake and cook and share it with friends and relatives and shut-ins, especially relatives at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Her legacy is her family who will remember her faith and love for each of them: Arlys Hopkins and husband John; son-in-law, Eldean Borg; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Alice Marie Heinz was born January 19, 1926, at Bristow, the daughter of Henry and Hattie (Gruis) Miller. She attended country school in both Butler and Floyd counties. On June 27, 1946, she was united in marriage with John Heinz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Roseville.

The couple farmed all of their lives on the Heinz family farm. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose Lodge and Heritage Club. Alice’s interests included doing yard work, gardening, fishing and going to rummage sales.

Her family was always very special to her and she took a particular interest in the grandchildren and great grandchildren attending as many of their activities as possible.

Living family members include her husband, John of Charles City; three children, Sheryel (David) Wetherell of Orchard, Sandra (Duane) Jaeger and Scott (Janit) Heinz both of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Curt Wetherell, Raina Roll, Kerry Crooks, Troy and Michael Jaeger, Samantha Ritter and Jon Heinz; 14 great grandchildren; two brothers, Daniel Miller of Greene, and Leslie Miller; special friend, Eleanor, of Portland; and three sisters, Dena Hansen of Denver, Colo., Lucille Hansen of Waterloo, and Kathleen (Fred) Schempf of Lakewood, Colo.

Laverne Sylvester Simon was born August 26, 1932, in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Joseph M. Simon and Christina Halfman Simon. He was baptized August 28, 1932, at the Visitation Church in Stacyville.

Laverne was united in marraige to Lou Ann Eschweiler on July 18, 1959.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956. He hauled milk for the Stacyville Creamery and worked at White Farm in Charles City and later for the city of Stacyville.

Laverne was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion in Stacyville

He enjoyed fishing, gardening and working in his yard. He was known for his sense of humor and for being a very honest person. He enjoyed spending time with his buddies. He looked forward to family reunions and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Paul, the son of William B. and Glenne Sheridan Spangler, was born December 29, 1930, in Britt. Paul was a 1950 graduate of Britt High School and graduated from Mason City Junior College in 1956.

Paul was united in marriage with Patsy Pierce on April 24, 1954, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake. The couple made their home in Britt for 46 years, where they raised their five children.

Paul was employed at Pritchard Auto in Britt as a salesman until health forced him to retire in 1980.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Britt.

Paul loved and was passionate about his family and friends. He loved to socialize and joke. No one could tell a story quite like Paul. He loved God and the Catholic faith. He will be greatly missed.

Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Britt; five children, Margaret Herman of Mason City, Lisa Smidt and her husband, Paul, of Kanawha, David Spangler and his wife, Julie, of Kanawha, Caroline Andersen and her husband, Reggie, of Forest City, Stephanie Specht and her husband, Chris, of Yankton, S. Viola was born to Olaf and Lena Larson on the family Happy Home Farm near Park River, North Dakota, on December 13, 1918. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hoople, N.D.

She was raised on the North Dakota prairie and graduated from Walsh County Agriculture and Training High School in 1935. She attended business school and worked as a secretary. She also attended the Moody Evangelical Bible School in Chicago.

Viola married Oscar Laaveg September 11, 1943. After his ordination, she was a Lutheran pastor’s wife and homemaker until retiring to Belmond in 1982. They served parishes in Kindred, N.D., Canton, S.D., Rapid City, S.D., Helmar, Ill., Camrose, Alberta Canada, Belmond, Cylinder and Fertile, Iowa. She has lived in Mason City the last five years.

Viola loved growing flowers, music, poetry, reading, cooking, sewing and being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was active in her church, Christian prayer groups and loved her family interaction. She had a deeply held Christian faith.

VICTORIA ‘VICKIE’ GAIL HANSON


NORTHWOOD — Victoria “Vickie” Gail Hanson, 49, of Northwood, died Thursday (Aug. 5, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Grace Evangelical Free Church, 440 N. Illinois Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Scott Davis officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa, Hidden Acres, or Grace Evangelical Free Church in Mason City.

Victoria “Vickie” Gail Hanson was born May 20, 1955, in Hartford, Conn. the daughter of Richard and Sarah (Marstaller) Durost.

Vickie graduated from Windsor Locks High School in Connecticut. After high school she attended The Kings College in Briar Cliff Manor, New York, where she received her bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Vickie was united in marriage to Greg Hanson on Jan. 7, 1978, in Carbondale, Ill. To this union three children were born.

Vickie studied piano for 15 years and later taught piano lessons for 12 years. She worked at the Grace Evangelical Free Church as a musician, later taking the position of Worship Coordinator.

She was an accompanist for the Northwood and Mason City Schools.

She was a member of Grace Evangelical Free Church, Mason City.

Vickie loved being close to family and friends, music, gardening, and watching family in school activities.

She is survived by her husband, Greg Hanson, of Northwood; children, Sarah (Lawrence) Lee, of Bluff City Tenn., Jon (Elly) Hanson, of Stratford, Samuel Hanson, of Northwood; parents, Richard and Sarah Durost, of Ocala Fla.; father-in-law, James A. Hanson, of Northwood; sister, Rebecca (Bruce) Fish, of Bend, Ore., brother, Major Richard (Andrea) Durost, of Puyallup, Wash.; sister, Edith (William) Emerson, of Augusta, Md.; along with many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by grandparents; and mother-in- law, Virginia Hanson.

LAVERNE S. SIMON


STACYVILLE — Laverne S. Simon, 71, of Stacyville, passed away Saturday (Aug. 7, 2004) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Burial will take place at the Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Visitation Catholic Church, with a 4 p.m. rosary and a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

Laverne Sylvester Simon was born Aug. 26, 1932, in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Joseph M. Simon and Christina Halfman Simon. He was baptized Aug. 28, 1932 at the Visitation Church in Stacyville.

Laverne was united in marriage to Lou Ann Eschweiler on July 18, 1959.

He served in the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1956.

He hauled milk for the Stacyville Creamery and worked at White Farm in Charles City and later for the city of Stacyville.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion in Stacyville.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening and working in his yard. He was known for his sense of humor and being a very honest person. He enjoyed spending time with his buddies. He looked forward to family reunions and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lou Ann; daughters, Diana Reis and her husband, Brian, of St. Ansgar, Judy Kuntz and her husband, Robert, of St. Ansgar, Donna Sullivan and her husband, Tom, of Osage, Collette Justin and her husband, Jeff, of Oronoco, Minn.; three sons, Roger and his wife, Claire, of Adams, Minn., Dale and his wife, Diane, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Robert, of Stacyville; 17 grandchildren; four sisters, Marion Leonaitis, of Zion, Ill., Hellen Church, of Stacyville, Arlene (Bob) Hartnell, of Austin, Jeanne (Adrian) Blake, of Austin; three brothers, Marvin (Milly) Simon, of Waterloo, Wilbur (Charlotte) Simon, of Osage, and Kenneth (Darlene) Simon, of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his son, Russell; one sister, Kathryn A. Simon; his parents, Joseph and Christina Halfman Simon.

VENTURA — Leo Francis Lallier, 76, 205 West View Drive, Ventura, died Monday (Aug. 9, 2004) at Heritage Health Care in Mason City.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S., Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating.

Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Leo was born May 23, 1928, in Buffalo Center, the son of Oswald F. and Sarah (Kelch) Lallier. He graduated from Algona High School.

Leo served his country in the Army National Guard during the Korean War.

He worked for Northern Natural Gas for 32 years, retiring in 1984.

After retirement, Leo and Delores volunteered for various senior programs both in Iowa and Arizona.

They wintered in Apache Junction, Ariz.

Leo loved gardening, fishing, and camping with his family.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Leo is survived by three children, Vicki McNally and her husband Patrick, of Tucson, Ariz., Debra Sharits and Jack Wignot, Redondo Beach, Calif. and Kristy Prall and her husband, Kirk, of Meridian, Idaho; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, wife Delores, July 2, 2004; and granddaughter Melissa.

MASON CITY — Elmer T. Johnson, 84, of 1037 19th St S.W., died Sunday (Aug. 8, 2004) at IOOF Home in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City with Major Charles J. Wright of the Salvation Army, officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery Mason City.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the funeral chapel.

Elmer T. Johnson was born Dec. 18, 1919, in Worth County, a son of James A. and Hannah (Gunderson) Johnson.

For several years, Elmer worked at the former Costa’s Restaurant and Marnin’s Drive-In, Mason City.

He had resided at the IOOF Home for the past 20 years.

He is survived by nieces and nephews, Mike Johnson, of Mason City; Tom Johnson, of Papua, New Guinea; Anne Foster, of Garner; Marilee Johnson, of Atlanta, Ga.; Dave Niichel, Donaldson; Joy McGrane, of Waterloo; Julie McDonald, of Kansas City, Mo.; Rick Vandehaar, of Mitchellville; Gary Johnson, of Mason City; Judy Wood, of Apopka, Fla.; Bob Johnson, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Donna Bull, of Nora Springs; and several great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Clarence E Johnson, Ellis T. Johnson, James Johnson, and Robert Johnson.
