JESS VAUGHN BAINTER


CLEAR LAKE — Jess Vaughn Bainter, 81, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated.

Jess was born Sept. 6, 1922, on a farm near Zearing, the son of Jess and Fern (Miller) Bainter. He attended school in Marshalltown.

He later moved to Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1939.

On visits to Clear Lake, he met Julie Whitney and they were married on Aug. 15, 1942, in Glendale, Calif.

In December of 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet, serving as a flight clerk flying out of Hamilton Field, Calif., throughout the Pacific Theatre.

He received the Air Medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights from June of 1944 through October of 1945. The citation reads: “As Flight Clerk on transport aircraft, Corporal Bainter completed one thousand one hundred eighty-two hours of over-water operational flying, often within combat theatres where enemy fire was both probable and expected.

“The high degree of competence and exemplary devotion to duty displayed by Corporal Bainter reflect great credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.”

During the war years, a son and daughter were born in California. Following the war, the family moved back to Iowa. Jess (known to friends and family as Vaughn) worked as a Standard Oil salesman, as a local radio announcer in Clear Lake and Mason City, and turned to sales, working for “remembrance” advertising firms until his retirement in the early 1990’s. A second son was born in Iowa.

Vaughn was known for his positive outlook and outgoing personality. He was a talented natural singer, often performing at sales conventions as well as for family and friends.

As a traveling salesman he was known to have driven one exceptionally reliable car for over 250,000 miles.

After a career in sales in Iowa, and later in California (60’s to the 90’s) he and his wife returned to Clear Lake. Jess spent the last few years at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown.

Jess is survived by three children, Michael V. Bainter and his wife, Nancy, of Pacific Grove, Calif., Lani M. Cook,of Clear Lake, and Whitney J. Bainter, of Goleta, Calif., one brother, Wendy Bainter of Banning, Calif.; two grandchildren, Rebecca Franks and her husband, Dan, of Clear Lake, and Matthew Cook, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; and one great-granddaughter, Emma G. Franks.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Fern Bainter, of Seal Beach, Calif.; and his wife, Juliette Lila (Whitney) Bainter, of Clear Lake.

There will be no memorial service; the immediate family will have a private service.

WAYNE E. SKYRME


CLEAR LAKE — Wayne E. Skyrme, 81, 20 Sunset View Drive, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave N., Clear Lake, with Pastor Thom Christians officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with military honors provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Wayne Skyrme Memorial Fund.

Wayne was born May 12, 1923, in Angus, Neb., the son of Davies A.J. and Edna L. (Frederick) Skyrme.

After high school he enlisted in the Army on March 8, 1946, and served during World War II until 1949.

He married Mary Jean Deist in 1946. He lived in Charles City and worked for Prudential Insurance Co.

He later moved to Mason City and worked for the Prudential Life Juvenile Home and was the director of the Frances Lauer Juvenile Home.

Wayne married Clarice “Mike” Nelson on Sept. 11, 1974, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He then worked at Handicap Village (Opportunity Village) for 25 years as a house parent and cottage director.

Wayne enjoyed photography and traveling. He was one of the organizers and member of the Arrowhead Club in Clear Lake.

Wayne was awarded both the Melvin Jones Award from the Lions and the Employee of the Year at Opportunity Village.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Clarice “Mike” Skyrme, of Clear Lake; daughter, Terri Jambor and her husband, Robert, of Lake Geneva, Wis.; son, Charles McGreevey and his wife, Karen, of Mason City; stepchildren, Linda Ferguson, of Ventura, Craig Nelson and his wife, Tricia, of Creede, Colo., and Kim Thompson and her husband, Larry, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Genevieve Steele and her husband, Wallace, of Ham Lake, Minn., and Ruth Krueger, of Charles City; stepgrandchildren, Lesley Bush and her husband, Jeff, Jeff Ferguson, Coleman Nelson, Caleb Nelson, Cameron Nelson, Gregory Thompson and Lindsey Thompson; stepgreat-grandchildren, Landon and Larrisa Bush; and five nephews.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents, first wife and two brothers, Gerald and Richard.

RAY JACK PENTICOFF


HANSELL — Ray Jack Penticoff, 83, of Hansell, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Hansell United Methodist Church in Hansell with the Rev. H. Sam Lee and the Rev. Julie Poore-Christensen officiating. Burial will be in the Ingham Township Cemetery in Hansell.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Ray was born July 2, 1921, in Franklin County, Iowa, the son of Ray Penticoff and Lillian Schear Penticoff. He was raised in Hansell and graduated from the Hansell High School in 1940.

In 1942 he entered the Air Force and served as an airplane mechanic in the European Theater during World War II and was discharged in 1945 as a staff seargent.

Jack was a member of the Dumont Legion.

He was united in marriage to Verla Ritzman Feb. 21, 1947, in Troy, Kan.

Jack and his wife, Verla, farmed north of Hansell all of their married life.

Jack was baptized on March 4, 1953. He joined the Hansell United Methodist Church shortly thereafter, and attended there until his health prevented him from doing so.

His greatest joy was feeding cattle and hogs, which he was very successful at.

In later years he acquired his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying his Cessna 172. He also enjoyed motorcycling and was an avid sports enthusiast.

He is survived by his daughter, Rita, and her husband, Trent Gerdes, of Waterloo; and two grandchildren, Melanie and Morgan Gerdes.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lillian; wife Verla; brother Robert and sister,Veneda Woodley.

GREENE — Elmer Mennenga, 86, of 2105 S. First St. in Greene, died Friday (Aug. 20, 2004) at the Liebe Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Greene with the Rev. Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

ELMER MENNENGA


GREENE — Funeral services for Elmer Mennenga, 86, of 210 South First Street, Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Greene with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating.

Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene, with military honors conducted by the Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Wednesday.

Elmer Mennenga was born on Sept. 12, 1917, northeast of Ackley, a son of Henry and Gertie (Bushman) Mennenga and died Friday (Aug. 20, 2004) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

He received his education in the Washington District No. 3 School and was baptized in the Washington Reform Church. As a young man, he started farming on the family farm.

On April 28, 1942, he was inducted into the United States Army where he served with the l01st Military Police, Co. A, serving overseas, in Italy, for three years, five months and 13 days. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern service medal, four Bronze Arrowheads for Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, North Apennines and the Po Valley. He also received the Meritorious Unit Award and the Fifth Army Commendation for outstanding performance.

While in Italy, he met Carmen Palpon, a nurse, in an Italian Army Hospital, and they later married on March 9, l946, at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, in Florence, Italy. He was discharged on July 3, 1946 and they returned to Ackley.

Mr. and Mrs. Mennenga farmed on the family farm in Ackley until 1957 when they moved to Howard County and farmed intil l960.

In 1963 they moved to Greene where they became employed by the Albrecht Hatchery. In 1970 he became employed by Butler County Road Department.

Following his retirement in 1982 he enjoyed gardening and taking care of his cars. The last ten years of his life were blessed with the friendship of Myrtle, Elsie, Leola and Sis.

Elmer was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, in Greene, where he had been a member since 1964 and had served as church trustee and member of the parsonage board, serving as chairman of both for many years. He also served as church custodian. Elmer served on the Greene City Council for several terms.

He will be sadly missed by his loving daughter, Sara (Dennis) Hotetz, and his granddaughter, Gina Marie (Raymond) Tucker, all of Frederick, Md., and several nieces and nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Carmen, who died March 23, 1994; his parents; two sisters, Grace Claassen and Rose Smith; two brothers, Menne Mennenga and Herman Mennenga.

DR. THEODORE R. ZERAN


BURLINGTON — Dr. Theodore R. Zeran, 68, of Burlington, died Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at his home following a short illness.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church in Burlington.

Theodore is survived by his wife, Margaret, and three children, Mary Zeran (Jeff Schipper) of Cedar Rapids, Michael Zeran (Barbara) of Iowa City, and Melissa Fell (Daniel) of Fort Madison. Also surviving are one grandchild, Emma Fell; a sister, Barbara Dugan of Phoenix, Ariz., and one brother, Richard Zeran of Rockford.

Theodore was born July 1, 1936, in Rockford, the son of Russell and Mildred (O’Rourke) Zeran. He married Margaret Knight on Sept. 19, 1959, in Rockford.

Dr. Zeran spent most of his young life in Rockford, graduating from Rockford High School in 1955. He then proceeded with his education obtaining a B.A. and B.S. degree from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, in 1959.

He then enrolled in the University of Iowa School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1964. He went on to complete family practice residency at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines, and an ophthalmology residency at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minn.

His military service included two years in the Public Health Services in Alexandria, Va., at the St. Elizabeth Hospital as a general surgeon.

Theodore opened his ophthalmology practice in 1972; he practiced for 27 years before retiring in 1997.

Theodore was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William; and a sister, Marlys Arends.

He was a member of the Des Moines-Louisa Co. Medical Society, the American Medical Association, and the Carthage Lake Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the First Congregational Church in Burlington and Great River Hospice.

MASON CITY — Maree F. Dickman, 94, of 1037 19th St. S.W., died Friday (August 20, 2004) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church, 1217 6th Ave., Mountain Lake, Minn. with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Chaplain, Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Interment will be in Mountain Lake Cemetery.

Maree was born May 17, 1910, in Butterfield, Minn., the daughter of John and Anna (Niessen) Harder. She attended schools in Butterfield.

Maree married John Dickman on Feb. 14, 1941, in St. James, Minn. Following their marriage, they moved to Mountain Lake where they owned and operated Dickman’s Cold Storage Locker Plant. Maree retired in 1975 and later moved to Mason City in 1995. She was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mountain Lake and a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, music and traveling.

Maree is survived by her daughter, Marilynn Eilers and husband, Dick, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Julie Maree Eilers of Kansas City, Mo., and John D. Eilers of Springfield, Mo.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; god-mother of Patricia Harder Pingeon.

Maree is preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant son, Jon; two brothers, Franklin and Dale Harder; and one sister, Kathryn Hunt.

OSAGE — Betty Bly Wilkes, 82, of Osage, died Saturday (August 21, 2004) of injuries she received in an auto accident near Little Cedar.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Visitation is from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage where there will be a Rosary at 4 p.m.

Betty was born March 1, 1922, near Little Cedar, the daughter of Grant and Hazel (Griffin) Hill. She attended Riceville High School, where she graduated in 1941.

Betty was united in marriage to James (Stub) Callahan on September 13, 1941, in Austin, Minn. They were residing in Riceville, when James passed away on December 7, 1971. She attended school in Calmar, where she obtained her LPN license.

Betty was then united in marriage to Robert Wilkes in Decorah. They moved to Osage where Robert passed away on February 12, 1987.

She is survived by two sons, Craig (Patty) Callahan of Mason City, and Michael Callahan of Charles City; four grandchildren, Katie Callahan of Mason City, Grant, Heather, and Megan Keith of Hudson; two nephews, Tyrone Hill of Winona, Minn., and Tom Hill of Sonoma, Calif.; three nieces, Beverly, Virginia, and Iris Hill, all of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; a brother, Montel Hill; and a nephew, Terry Hill

STANLEY PALMER KNUTSON


CARPENTER — Stanley Palmer Knutson, 80, of rural Carpenter, died Saturday, (August 21, 2004) at Albert Lea Medical Center, Albert Lea, Minn.

His funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, with the Rev. Myrwood Bagne officiating. Burial will be in the Deer Creek Cemetery.

Stanley was born May 27, 1924, the son of Sever and Stella (Gordon) Knutson, at the family farm in Barton Township, Worth County, Iowa, where he lived his entire life. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by the Rev. Olaf Langehough at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. He received his public education at the Carpenter school.

Stan devoted his life to the work of the church; as Sunday school secretary for 15 years, and through the years singing in the choir, serving as financial secretary, church treasurer, church custodian and the mowing of the church lawn and cemetery. In recent years he served as advisory member of the cemetery committee.

Stan was a farmer; and also worked for several years as an electrician. He enjoyed woodworking and making plates, bowls and candlesticks on the turning lathe. His recent hobby was chip carving. He was an expert at crossword puzzles and Cryptoquote. He read a lot and always kept his mind busy as well as his hands.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his sister, Lola, several cousins and friends.

OSAGE — Paul R. Naig, age 65, of Osage died Saturday (August 21, 2004) at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Paul was born December 21, 1938, in Osage, the son of Nels and Arlene (Sewright) Naig. He attended school in Osage and graduated from Osage High School in 1957. Paul entered the U.S. Air Force in 1958 and served 26 years, retiring as a senior master sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Joyce A. Kleeberger on August 17, 1963 in Claremont, Minn. Following Paul’s retirement from the Air Force, they returned to Osage where he worked for Erdman Motor Co. in Osage, Lake Chevrolet in Clear Lake, and Fox River Mills in Osage. Paul retired in 2003. He was a volunteer for the CASA Program.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Naig of Osage; his children, Kelly (Steve) Stotts of Des Moines, Doug (Mesa) Naig of Osage, and Kara Zimmerman of Osage; seven grandchildren; and one brother, John Naig of Seattle, Wash.

GREENE — Memorial services for Delvan J. Arjes, 61, of 24791 130th Street, Greene, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church officiating.

Delvan John Arjes was born June 26, 1943, in Bertha, Minn., a son of John and Mary Alice (Worden) Arjes, and died Saturday (August 21, 2004) at the Waverly Municipal Hospital.

He was baptized April 8, 1944, and confirmed March 30, 1958, at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison. He received his education in the rural schools in Jackson Township, and the Allison public schools.

As a young man, he drove truck for Don Bauman, and was later inducted into the United States Army, on November 3, 1964. He served in Korea, and was discharged September 2, 1966.

Following his discharge he became employed by the Allison Implement Co., and later by Hoodjer Construction.

On April 12, 1969, he was united in marriage to Carol Diane Shreve, in Hampton. They made their home in the rural Greene area and to this union were born three sons. In 1979 he went to work for the Butler County Road Department where he remained until his death.

Delvan’s interests stem back to his roots growing up on the farm. He enjoyed going to farm sales, steam engine and tractor shows, and, in recent years, farm toy shows.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Carol, of Greene; his three sons, Jon Arjes of Jewell, Jason Arjes of Greene, and James (Katie) Arjes of Waverly; and one brother, Darvin, (Cheryle)Arjes of Greene.

Delvan was preceded in death by his parents.

MASON CITY — Elmer Theodore “Bud” Trytten, 83, of 1449 N. Carolina Place, died Sunday (Aug. 22, 2004) at Muse Norris Hospice in-patient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Donald L. Simmonds, officiating.

Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills, where full military honors will be conducted by members of Otto-Chose American Legion Post No. 235, Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. , with a 7 p.m. Moose Memorial service.

There willl be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Elmer Theodore Trytten was born June 13, 1921, at Leland, a son of Oscar and Emma (Liefson) Trytten. Bud was baptized and confirmed at West Prairie Lutheran Church, Leland.

He was united in marriage to Ruth R. “Blondie” Loge on Oct. 12, 1945 at Minneapolis, Minn.

Bud attended school at Lake Mills. He served in the US Army during World War II in the First Medical Regiment as a medic and ambulance driver, in the Philippines.

He worked in the sausage department at Jacob E. Decker Meat Packing /Armour for over 34 years, retiring in 1985.

Bud enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gardening, and especially spending time with his family and friends.

He was a 50-year member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City and also held memberships in the Elks, Moose and VFW all Mason City.

Bud is survived by his wife, Ruth Trytten, of Mason City; two daughters, Cheryl Lajeunesse and her husband Richard, of Fruit Heights, Utah; Kristi Trytten, of Bountiful, Utah: a son, Daryl Trytten and special friend, Penny Trytten, of Mason City; six grandchildren, Brenda Kobernusz, of Monrovia, Calif.; Kate Haberl, of Santa Clara, Utah; Julie Kobernusz, of Pasadena, Calif; James Kobernusz,of Fruit Heights, Utah; Angie Trytten, of Mason City; Trenity Trytten, of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Dalton and Decker Haberl, of Santa Clara, Utah; three brothers, Arlo Trytten and his wife, Darlene; Orville Trytten; and Glaydon Trytten and his wife Donna, all of Lake Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

His parents, one sister, Alice Peterson; and two brothers, Lawrence and Hiram Trytten, preceded him in death.

CLEAR LAKE — James E. “Jim” Brechler, 65, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, a longtime resident of Clear Lake died Saturday (Aug. 21, 2004) at the home of his daughter in Coralville.

Jim was born July 21, 1939, in Mallard, Iowa, the son of Harold and Mary (Kendall) Brechler. He enlisted in the United States Navy following high school.

Jim married Margaret Yvonne Schupfer on Dec. 31, 1960. They resided in Clear Lake for most of their lives where Jim was associated with Harker’s and H&H Distribution.

In addition, he was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Jim’s pastimes included hunting, fishing, enjoying the company of good friends and traveling with his wife, Yvonne.

In 2002, they moved to Mount Vernon, Ohio to be near their son, David, and other immediate family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Yvonne.

His family includes a son, David, of Mount Vernon, Ohio; daughter and her husband, Mary and Chris Paulson of Coralville; brother and his wife, Ron and Vicki Brechler of Mount Vernon, Ohio and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY — Paula (Sprole) McClure of Mason City passed away Sunday (Aug. 22, 2004) at the age of 93.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Paula was born in Alten Donop, Germany, on Oct. 8, 1910. She came to America with her parents and three older brothers in September of 1924, joining relatives in the Rockford area.

She attended country school and then graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City at age 18.

She was secretary and bookkeeper for Mitchell (Mike) Sprole in his business, Mason City Creamery, in the 1930s and married him in 1938.

During World War II, she and Mike farmed just west of Mason City, continuing that business until he died in 1959.

She then worked for businesses in Mason City as a secretary and bookkeeper.

She had one child, John Sprole, now of Des Moines. She helped raise M. Burton Sprole, Mike’s son from his deceased first wife, and saw him off to World War II in 1944 and his graduation from Iowa State College in 1948.

John graduated from Macalester College in 1971 and the University of Iowa Law School in 1976. He and wife Tamara live in Des Moines, where he practices law. They have two grown daughters, Amanda Acton and Kathleen Sprole.

Burton and wife Doris are retired at Allison and have three grown children, Cynthia Boyer, Julie Waggett, and John M. Sprole.

Paula married Roy M. McClure of Belmond in 1967 and lived in retirement with him in Mason City until his death in 1988.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Mason City for more than 65 years and was very active in the church. She also enjoyed gardening, crafts, reading and music.

In addition to John and Burton and their families, she will also be missed by great-grandchildren, Klayton Sprole, McKenna Sprole, and Brandi, Brittney, and Brett Waggett.

She will also be missed by nephews, Martin (Lois) Meier of Swaledale, Richard (Larue) Meier of Swaledale, Mary Ann (Cecil) Ditsworth of Mason City, Shirley (Paul) Pirkl of Mason City, Eugene (Lucille) Meier of Rockford, and their families, and the families of niece, Dorothea (Warren) Pals and nephew Francis (LeAnn) Meier, who preceded her.

CLEAR LAKE — Walter “Wayne” Wood, 85, of Lady Lake, Florida, went to be with the Lord, on Saturday (Aug. 21, 2004).

Walter is an Army Veteran of World War II and a Pruple Heart recipient. He retired as a rural mail carrier in Clear Lake, Iowa, and has lived in The Villages for the past 20 years. He was a member of Chapel of Christian Faith and American Legion Post 347, Lady Lake, and a past member of Lady Lake Lions.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Theone Wood of Lady Lake; sons, Russell (Judy) Wood of Palm Bay, Fla., Richard Wood of Leesburg, Fla., and Rae (Carolyn) Wood of Merritt Island, Fla.; sisters, Arlene Barber, Clear Lake, Iowa, Pauline Rumeloite, Mason City, Iowa, and Barbara (Leslie) Davis of Coeur D’Alene, Idaho; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceeded in death by parents, Harvey and Blanche Wood; a son, Ronald Wood; a brother, Dale Wood; and a sister, Kathryn Laskowski.

Norma was born on March 6, 1912, in Belle Fourche, S.D., the only child of James “Earl” and Frances (Guidinger) Stewart. She was baptized in the Catholic faith.

She was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Blue Earth, Minn., on May 21, 1939.

She was raised by her single mother, her Guidinger grandparents and her few aunts and uncles after her parents divorced when she was four years old.

She lived her childhood years in the Black Hills area, attending elementary school in Beulah, Wyo.

She played girls basketball for Sundance High School. Her winning team traveled to the State Tournament in Gillette, Wyo., two at a time, via a small airplane. She graduated with honors receiving a special Teaching Certificate in the spring of 1930.

She married Obed Justin Skogerboe on Aug. 12, 1930, in the Deadwood, S. D., Courthouse and they returned to Obed’s home near Blue Earth, Minn., where they ran her widowed mother-in-law’s farm.

Shortly after their oldest son, Rodney, was born in 1931, they moved to Sundance, Wyo., and ranched several years before once again returning to Blue Earth, where they both took jobs with Schwens Ice Cream Company.

Her second son, “Chuck”, and daughter, Zelda, were born during that period of time.

Obed was hired as a foreman on Mores Vegetable Farm and Norma worked alongside him whenever she could arrange for child care.

In early 1940, the family moved to a farm west of Forest City, Iowa, and began their lifetime in farming.

Norma became active in the community, including taking her turn driving their family car to bus her own and neighborhood children to school. Their youngest son, Dennis “Mike”, was born in 1944.

Norma was an ambitious hard working person who enjoyed being with people. Besides raising her family and assisting with the farming, she worked additional jobs in Forest City.

She clerked for Pinckney Pharmacy, Federated Store, Forest City Bakery, Coast To Coast and also cooked for the Forest City Community School.

Norma and Obed worked as a team to manage the Forest City Golf and Country Club for 12 years. Then managed the Winnebago River Oaks Clubhouse for the next 10 years.

Norma was a strong and caring role model for her family and friends. She had an outgoing friendly personality with an easy sense of humor and a contagious hearty laugh.

She was known for her fantastic cooking ability and her signature pies.

She enjoyed sewing for her daughter and granddaughters and crocheted beautiful “keepsakes” for her family.

Norma seldom complained and never gave up when she was faced with her many challenging health issues.

She and her husband Obed unselfishly opened their home to her Mother who lived with them for 44 years.

She sent annual Christmas and birthday cards and gifts to each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren up until her last illness in 2004.

Her quiet faith and determination helped her to survive the early death of several members of her beloved family.

Norma and Obed joined Immanuel Lutheran’s “old” church in 1940.

She was active in the women’s groups and celebrated her 50th Wedding Anniversary in August 1980.

She was a member of the Ellington Township Community Club, the Winnebago County American Legion Auxiliary and the Kum Along Club.

She enjoyed volunteering her time answering the telephone at the Good Samaritan Center and taking friends to their out of town doctor appointments.

When Obed became critically ill in September 1980, they retired from farming and moved to Forest City.

Norma lovingly provided attentive around-the-clock home care for her husband until his death in 1981.

She moved into Town Square Apartments and with courage continued her full active life.

She moved to the Forest City Good Samaritan Center in July 2004 after receiving a serious injury from a fall. She died there on Aug. 21, 2004.

She will always be remembered with love.

Norma was pre-deceased by her parents; husband Obed in 1981; son “Mike” who was killed in Vietnam in 1969; infant granddaughter, Molly Ann Suby in 1964; infant great-grandson Matthew Doney in 1989; son-in-law, Donald Suby in 1993; daughter-in-law Wanda (Will) Skogerboe in 1993; sisters-in-law, Malinda Otis, Anna Christianson, Nora Keliveg, and Selma Thompson; brothers-in-law, John, Palmer, Verner and Reuben Skogerboe.

She is survived by three of her children and spouses, 10 grandchildren and spouses and 25 great-grandchildren. They are Rodney and Ruth Skogerboe; Scott and Dianne Skogerboe, David, Paul and Jared; Karin and Alan Bright, Joseph and Jackson, all from Fort Collins, Colo.; Kristen and Rob Synovec, Thomas and Johanna of Seattle, Wash.; Lauren Lindsay and Jamie Cecelia of Eustis, Fla.; Andrea Lindsay of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Chuck and Susie Skogerboe and Jeffrey of Spirit Lake; Dirk and Roxanne Skogerboe and Danielle of Faribault, Minn.; Jed and Eileen Skogerboe, Olivia, Elizabeth, and Nile of Spirit Lake; Mark and Jacci Skogerboe, Anna, Amy, T.J. and Jesse of Algona; Zelda and Richard W. Peterson, Julie and Roger Bisbey, Jessica, Paul, Erica and Scott, all of Rochester, Minn.; Sallie and Tom Suby-Long, Rachel, Sarah, Rebecca of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; Robb Suby and Russell Thompson of Johnston.

Also surviving are seven stepgrandchildren and spouses, and 12 step-great-grandchildren. BEVERLY ALLISON


DULUTH, Minn. — Beverly Allison, 82, of Duluth passed away unexpectedly Sunday (Aug. 22, 2004) at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minn.

She was born Beverly June Billings on June 1, 1922, in Chickasaw County, Iowa, and graduated from Osage High School in 1940.

On May 31, 1942, she married Gordon Allison. After Gordon returned from service in World War II, they lived in Waterloo, Osage and, finally Mason City, where Gordon worked for State Farm Inurance, and Beverly was his secretary.

She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, was active in PTA, the YWCA, and was a leader in women’s organizations at church.

In 1970, they retired to Mesa, Ariz., and Beverly was a teacher’s aide with the Mesa School system for several years.

She also was a leader of water aerobics, chair aerobics, did many crafts, and she and Gordon enjoyed traveling, singing in church choir, playing bridge and ballroom dancing.

Following Gordon’s death in 2001, she moved to Duluth, Minn. She was a resident of Edgewood Vista Assisted Living and a member of French River Lutheran Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gordon.

She is survived by her daughters, Debrah (Robert) Adams of Duluth, Minn., and Dauri (Robert) Furgerson of Mesa, Ariz.; grandchildren, Jason (Tina) Gislason of Oklahoma, Kristin (Derrick) Burbul of Boone, Jennifer (Chris) Buckley of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Savanna, Katie, Saige, Olivia, and Solana; sisters, Evelyn (Lawrence) Dieterich of St. Ansgar, and Betty (Birney) Gast of Osage; and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living, Hermantown, Minn., with Pastor Gregory Garmer officiating.

Inurnment will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa, with a reception following graveside service at noon in Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Osage all are welcome.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Edgewood Vista Assisted Living and St. Mary’s Medical Cemtery for their kind, compassionate care.

O’FALLON, Mo. — Russell “Mike” Bower, 63, of O’Fallon, Mo., died Monday (Aug. 23, 2004) at Barnes- Jewish Hospital/St. Peters campus in St. Peters, Mo.

Russell “Mike” Bower was born Nov. 13, 1940, in Forest City, Iowa, to Russell Faulkner Bower and Ruby Bower.

He was an electronic technician retired from Ryko.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Bower, of O’Fallon, Mo.; son, Michael W. Bower, of O’Fallon, Mo.; daughter, Michele J. Bower, of O’Fallon, Mo.; four sisters, Barbara (Herb) Egts, of Waverly; Arlis (Gary) Flohr, of Billings, Mont., Catherine (Tom) Kirschbaum, of Fertile, and Maxine (Fred) Cobb, of Forest City; a brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister.

MASON CITY — T. Henry Hvattum, 89, of 4 3rd St. NW, died Monday (Aug. 23, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. James M. Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with an Elks Lodge service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Senior Citizens Center.

Henry was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Thomas H. and Randi (Lee) Hvattum. He graduated from Osage High School and Hamilton School of Business.

Henry married Katherine M. Wilmot Aug. 21, 1935, in Charles City. They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.

The Hvattums moved to Mason City in 1943.

Henry was the distribution manager for GAF Photo for 33 years. He retired in 1976.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Elks Lodge No. 375, where he was Past Exalted Ruler in 1964. He was also past president of Toastmasters and the Exchange Club.

Henry is survived by his wife, Katherine M. Hvattum of Mason City; daughter, Randi Christensen and husband G.Wayne of Floyds Knobs, Ind.; five grandchildren, Dori Ashburn and husband Scott of Mason City, Mike Warner of Mason City, Lisa Holifield and husband Don of Birmingham, Ala., Brian Christensen of Floyds Knobs, Ind., Janelle Sumner and husband Brian of Louisville, Ky.; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah and Abigail.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Linda Warner; infant son, Thomas; and two sisters, Ruth and Helga.

JONATHAN ‘JON’ KENTNER


NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — Jonathan Kentner entered into rest Thursday (Aug. 19, 2004) at the age of 28 near his home in North Augusta, S.C.

Jon spent the early years of his life in Mason City, Iowa attending Harding Elementary and participating in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, learning to love and appreciate the outdoors.

He moved to North Augusta, S.C., where he graduated high school in 1994 and began working at Bridgestone/Firestone.

He is survived by his parents, David and Judy Kentner, of Grovetown, Ga.; his sister, Julie Kentner, of Grovetown, Ga.; and paternal grandmother, Jean Kentner, of Wisconsin Dells, Wis.; many aunts, great-aunts, uncles and cousins.

Jon was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Clarence and Myrtle Ewers; and paternal grandfather, Edward Kentner.

ROCKWELL — Janice L. Ward, 63, of 707 Elm St., Rockwell and formerly of Mason City, died early Monday morning (Aug. 23, 2004) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Swaledale United Methodist Church, 402 Main St., Swaledale, with the Rev. Bruce E. Wittern officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, rural Swaledale.

Janice Lea Ward was born March 7, 1941, in Swaledale to Virgil and Ruby (Dyer) Ward. She was the youngest of two children born to her parents.

Janice attended school exclusively in Swaledale and graduated from Swaledale High School in 1959.

Janice was employed for many years at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in the housekeeping department and had lived in Cerro Gordo County all her life.

Due to ill health, Janice was disabled and living at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home for the past few years.

Some of Janice’s favorite leisure activities and interests included playing bingo and listening to music.

She held a special compassion for animals, especially her pet cat.

Janice treasured leisure time spent with her brother, Gerald. They enjoyed each other’s company and looked forward to visiting and going out to dinner.

She cherished the simple joys in life.

Janice is survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

Preceding Janice in death are her parents, Virgil and Ruby Ward; her grandparents; and her brother, Gerald Ward on July 15, 2004.

David Henry Thomas was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Mason City the son of Charles and Christina (Stadler) Thomas.

He was united in marriage to Virginia Hohenfield on April 15, 1943, in Sebring, Fla.

David served in the United States Air Force for 20 years during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was an active member of Benevolence Lodge No. 145 A.F. & A.M. and was a member of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the VFW of Rantoul, Ill.

David is survived by his wife, Virginia of Rantoul, Ill.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
