Donald Robert Anderson was born May 20,
1922, to O.B. and Mabel (Johnson)
Anderson, the second of four children.
On November 4, 1943, he was married to
Charlotte D. Moen; they shared nearly 60
years of marriage before her death on
June 13, 2003.
Don was born in Forest City, graduated
from Forest City High School, and
attended Waldorf College for two years.
It was during his two years at Waldorf
that he met his wife, Charlotte D. Moen.
His higher education was temporarily
interrupted by World War II. Don served
in the U.S Army Air Corps and was
awarded the rank of captain at the early
age of 23. He was stationed in many
European locations including Northern
Ireland, England and Orly Field in
Paris, France, as a
meteorologist/weather officer. His
forecasts were highly valued for their
accuracy in guiding air squadrons
throughout the European Theatre.
Post-war assignments included providing
forecasts for all the incoming aircraft
of world leaders attending the post-war
reconstruction Potsdam Conference, where
Europe was divided up by the Allied
countries. His last assignment was as
commanding officer of the 21st Weather
Squadron, which serviced most of
post-war Germany.
Don’s love for meteorology continued
throughout his life and included a daily
study of weather statistics via the
media and his personal home weather
station. If you wanted to know how much
rain we had last night, you would always
ask Don.
After the war, Don went on to receive
three master’s degrees: in journalism,
civil engineering, and meteorology from
the University of Iowa, Iowa State
University and Northwestern
University/U.S. Army, respectively.
In 1952, while working for Gates Rubber
Company in Denver, Colo., Don decided he
wanted to return to Forest City and join
his father’s insurance and real estate
business. In 1977, he sold the insurance
side to Manufacturers Bank and Trust
while retaining the real estate
business.
On July 1, 1978, son, Rolf, and wife,
Anne, also returned to Forest City,
becoming the third Anderson generation
selling real estate in Forest City and
Northern Iowa. Don insisted he had never
retired and continued to work mornings
at the Anderson Agency until two days
before entering Hospice.
Don was very community-minded, and
served on many boards including the
Forest City School Board and the Waldorf
College Board of Regents. Don was
instrumental in the Charter of Forest
Federal Savings and Loan in 1966 and
served as president for 16 years.
A man of faith, Don was an active member
of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served
on all levels of the church leadership.
In 1955, Don and Sidney Rand (then
president of Waldorf College) co-wrote
the centennial history of Forest City.
Sidney, a long time friend of both Don
and Charlotte went on to become
president of St. Olaf College, and
later, U.S. ambassador to Norway.
Waldorf College was very special to both
Don and Charlotte. Many life-long
friendships were formed while attending
Waldorf (1940-42), including his
courtship and later marriage, to wife
Charlotte.
He served on the Waldorf Board of
Regents and has been an active supporter
and ambassador of the college.
Don is survived by his sister, Dorothy
Twito of Lake Mills; sons, Steven Robert
Anderson of Los Angeles and Rolf Ove
Anderson and wife, Anne of Forest City;
grandchildren; Bergen, of Chicago, Ill,
Sarri and husband, David Truscinski of
Mankato, Minn., and Liv and Geir
Anderson of Forest City.

DANIEL F. MYERS
CHARITON — Daniel Frank Myers, a
careful steward of the land and
all of God’s creatures during
his 90-year lifetime, died early
Saturday evening (July 31, 2004)
at the Lucas County Medical
Center in Chariton. He had
suffered a severe stroke a week
earlier while engaged in a
favorite pastime — riding with
his son through the hills of
southern Iowa toward Centerville
evaluating the crops and
enjoying the scenery.
A graveside celebration of his
life will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Wednesday at Salem Cemetery,
located three miles southeast of
Chariton near the intersection
of the Blue Grass and New York
roads.
Fielding Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
Daniel was the son of Irwin and
Ethel (Dent) Myers, born Feb.
20, 1914, on their farm in the
old Myers neighborhood of Benton
Township, southeast of Chariton.
The Myers family included an
elder sister, Flora, and two
first cousins, Cleo and Frances
Myers, who were raised as his
little sisters following the
death of their own mother.
Daniel attended Myers School and
graduated from Chariton High
School with the class of 1932.
The family church was Mt.
Carmel, built by his
grandfather, Daniel Myers Sr.
Daniel’s chosen profession was
farming, and after high school
he went to work as a hand on the
Slater farm, south of Russell.
While working for the Slaters,
he married Reefa L. Miller, the
love of his life, on Aug. 7,
1944, at the Little Brown Church
in Nashua.
They moved soon thereafter to
the Evans place southeast of
Russell where they farmed in
partnership, raising Hereford
cattle and draft horses. Their
son, Frank Daniel, was born
during this period.
During 1951, Daniel and Reefa
purchased the Teater farm seven
miles south of Russell, which
remained their home for more
than 40 years and was operated
in tandem with the farm on which
he was born and raised.
Daniel and Reefa worked side by
side in their small-diversified
livestock, hay, and row crop
operation, adjusting to meet
market demands but with sheep
and Black Angus cattle as the
consultants.
Daniel took pride in being a
small farmer who earned a good
living for his family through
hard work and prudent
management.
He was a master of his craft, an
ardent but unselfconscious
conservationist, a steward of
the land he held in trust. He
used neither herbicides nor
pesticides and applied only
natural fertilizers. He relied
on crop rotation, careful
cultivation, and erosion control
measures to preserve the soil.
With the exception of the
occasional whack of a milking
stool applied to the back end of
a stubborn Guernsey, he treated
his livestock with immaculate
care. He kept his fences mended
and all of his water pipes
repaired and in place.
Entirely without pretense,
Daniel lived honestly and loved
unconditionally, rarely said an
unkind word about anyone and
strived always to build up
rather than tear down. His heart
was pure and his likes will not
be seen again.
During the early 1990s, Daniel
and Reefa moved into Chariton
where they lived contentedly
until Sept. 3, 1999, when she
died.
His best friend and soul mate,
Darin McFarland, enriched the
final years of his life
immeasurably. They shared many
adventures, often with Darin’s
daughter, Kelsey, riding
shotgun.
Preceded in death by his wife,
Reefa; parents and sister,
Flora; Daniel is survived by his
son, Frank, of Mason City and
Chariton; his best friend,
Darin; the much-loved Cleo
Shore, of Des Moines, and
Frances McNellis, of Tucson,
Ariz.; and a treasured
sister-in-law, Marie Miller, of
rural Chariton.
Memorial contributions may be
made via Frank Myers to fund
restoration of tombstones at
Salem Cemetery.
