Mr. White was born Nov.
30, 1918, in Clear Lake,
Iowa, to Warren Wallace
and Erma Leona (Gilbert)
White.
He was raised on the
family farm at Clear
Lake until moving as a

Iowa, where he worked as
a butcher in a
meatpacking plant.
He met and married
Dorothy Ruth Melichar in
1938 and they made their
home in Mason City.
He also worked in his
church and community
before moving to Sprague
River in 2002 to be
close to his son and his
family.
In Sprague River, Mr.
White was an active
member of the community.
Everyday at 5 a.m., he
went to the Sprague
River Station to set up
tables for breakfast,
making sure each had a
small bouquet of neatly
arranged flowers.
He enjoyed gardening and

animals. His favorite
lifelong pastime was
fishing.
Woodworking was a
much-loved hobby in

children’s toys that he
sold at local bazaars.
Music was an all-time
favorite of his. He was
self-taught at playing
the guitar and violin by
ear.
As often as possible, he
and his wife prepared a
large meal and had
musicians join him for a
jam session. In their
younger years, he and
his wife never missed an
opportunity to go
jitterburg dancing.
On May 18, 1944, he was
inducted into the Army
and served with the
101st Infantry Regiment
during World War II. He
was in Europe during the
Rhineland Campaign and
was wounded in
Luxembourg on Jan. 1,
1945.
Following his
rehabilitation, he was
discharged on Nov. 20,
1945.
He received numerous
military decorations
including ATCM, World
War II Victory Ribbon,
EAME Ribbon with one
bronze service star,
Purple Heart and Combat
Infantry Badge.
Mr. White returned to
Mason City and resumed
working in the
meatpacking plant until
moving to the Los
Angeles area in 1957. He
worked there for several
companies in warehousing
inventory control.
In 1969, he moved to
Hillsboro, Ore., and
worked as a custodian
for the Beaverton School
District.
Even after his
retirement, he continued
to work for the school
district until 70 years
of age, and although
officially retired, did
volunteer work for the
school district.
He also enjoyed watching
old western movies,
especially those in
which John Wayne played
a part.
