PEARL MARIE (STRADLEY) NITCHER

MANLY-Pearl Marie (Stradley) Nitcher, 91, of Manly, died Thursday (October 23, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly, with the Reverend Randy Nielsen officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3 until 6 p.m. today at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring Street, Manly, and also for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Pearl M. Nitcher Memorial Fund.

Pearl was born March 26, 1912, in Republic, Kan., a daughter of Samuel Arthur and Maude Martha (Stromberg) Stradley. She attended school in Republic before moving to Worth County, Iowa, in 1932.

Pearl later moved to Mason City where she worked as a seamstress for Mode O' Day for over 25 years. During that time, she was director of the Mode O' Day Employees Credit Union and a member of the Mode O' Day Audit Committee. Pearl also was the Financial Secretary for the ACWA Local #568.

After her retirement in 1975, she moved to Manly in 1978. She worked at Walk's Grocery Store in Grafton both before and after World War II.

Pearl was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Sarah Circle and she was a volunteer member of "The Band" at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed quilting past the age of 90.

Pearl will be greatly missed by her daughter, Maxine Kruger and her husband, Ed, of Grafton, her two sons, George Nitcher Jr., and his wife, Cordelia, of Council Bluffs, and Kenneth Nitcher and his wife, Sandra, of Northwood, and eleven grand-children and their spouses, Sharon and Chuck Badenschier, Marvin and Pat Hackbart, Ken and Kathy Hackbart, Howard and Joyce Ann Hackbart, Jean Wehrwein, Carol and Ron Post, Neil and Laurene Kruger, Dr. Rodney and Susan Nitcher, Drs. Randy and Kathleen Nitcher, Kent and Cheryl Nitcher and Kim Nitcher.

She is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, Kurt Halstrom, Ryan and Jason Post, Josh and Nick Wehrwein, Travis and Shea Marie Kruger, Jonathan, Emily, Ryan and Karen Nitcher, and Marissa and Dylan Nitcher, and three great-great-grandchildren, Justin Tyler Post and Jack and Reece Halstrom.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; three sisters; a daughter, Joyce Hackbart; a son, Raymond "Ray" Nitcher; and two grandchildren, Scot Michael Nitcher and Julie Ann Kruger.

LILLIAN L. GLOCK

NORA SPRINGS-Lillian L. Glock, of Nora Springs, formerly of Rudd, passed away on Friday (October 24, 2003) at the Nora Springs Care Center after living her life to the fullest for 103 years.

A service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Rudd United Methodist Church, 611 6th Street, with the Reverend Jim Turner officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to the Rudd United Methodist Church or the Nora Springs Care Center.

Lillian was born October 11, 1900, in Rudd, a daughter of Earnest and Lina (Hintzman) Schuster. She grew up in the Rudd area, graduating from Rudd High School in 1920. Lillian was united in marriage to John F. Glock on July 3, 1922. They were lifelong farmers near the Rudd area. Lillian also worked for Farmer's Mutual Telephone Company as an operator for 12 years. She was a member of the Rudd United Methodist Church and the church circle. She also was a 50 year member of the Rudd American Legion Auxiliary and president for 12 years of the "Jolly Rudders". Lillian enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, flowers, gardening, and music of all kinds, playing the piano for many years.

Lillian will be greatly missed by her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, in 1969, and all of her siblings.

LORRAINE F. GERARD

MASON CITY- Lorraine F. Gerard, 90, formerly of 10 South Willowgreen Court, died Wednesday (October 22, 2003) at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth Street S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Lorraine Frances, the daughter of John and Julia (Jablonski) Chmieleski, was born June 3, 1913, in Sturgeon Lake, Minn. She received her education from Superior High School in Superior, Wis. After high school she attended St. Cloud State.

Lorraine was united in marriage to Jerome J. Gerard on September 23, 1935. The couple moved to Mason City in 1937 where they owned and operated Gerard Photo Studio. Lorraine enjoyed spending time with her family. She was also an avid golfer and bridge player.

Lorraine was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Mason City Country Club.

Lorraine is survived by her husband, Jerome, of Mason City; daughter, Barbara Clark and her husband, Richard, of Tiburon, Calif.; two grandchildren, Kevin and Craig Clark, and two great-grandchildren, Connor and Julia. Also surviving are her sister, Veronica Booth of Minneapolis, Minn., and brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Geraldine Chmieleski of Mission, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Raymond, and one sister, Eleanor.

KAREN A. MONSON

CLEAR LAKE - Karen A. Monson, 35, of 709 South Eighth Street, Clear Lake, died Friday (October 24, 2003) at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Burial will be at Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake. Memorials may be left to the Karen Monson Memorial Fund in care of David Monson, 709 South Eighth Street, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428.

Karen Ann, the daughter of Daniel and Phyllis (Brandt) Sobek, was born April 29, 1968, at Mason City, Iowa. Karen was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Garner. She was raised in rural Klemme, graduating from Klemme High School in 1986. During high school she was a cheerleader as well as being very active in 4-H, band, choir, and drama. She was also a member of the LYC of St. John's Lutheran Church. She at-tended college at North Iowa Area Community College and the University of Northern Iowa, graduating from UNI in 1991 with a degree in elementary education. Karen taught in the Audubon School District for one year after college.

Karen was united in marriage to David Monson on July 18, 1992, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. David and Karen made their home in Clear Lake where she was an associate teacher and substitute teacher for the Clear Lake School District. In 1995 Karen began teaching second grade full-time at Lincoln Elementary School. She re-ceived the Golden Apple Award in 1999. She will always be remembered for her laughter and enthusiasm for children and for her dedication to teaching. She was a member of the St. John's Lutheran Church of rural Garner.

Karen's greatest love was her husband and her children. Above all, the needs of her husband and children were given first priority. Her love for them was unconditional. She was very involved with all of their activities such as ice-skating, dance, piano, and Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts. She also enjoyed scrapbooking and working out.

Karen is survived by her husband, David, children; Katie, Alec, and Joey all of Clear Lake; her mother and father, Daniel and Phyllis Sobek of Klemme; sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Jeffry Juhl of Cedar Falls; brothers, Jonathan Sobek of Iowa City and Philip Sobek of Des Moines; father-in-law, Ronald Monson, and his wife, Mary Ellen; sisters-in-law, Julie and Hannah Monson, all of Clear Lake; brothers-in-law, Kevin Monson of Clear Lake, and Bob Monson of Waukee. Also surviving is her grandmother, Antonia Brandt, of Osage; several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews and many, many close friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, John Brandt and George and Anna Sobek; mother-in-law, Grace Monson; and sister-in-law, Brenda Monson.

BANCROFT - Joseph F. Crowley, 77, of Knoxville, formerly of Bancroft, died Thursday (October 23, 2003) at the Iowa Veterans Hospital, Knoxville.

A funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, Bancroft. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bancroft American Legion.

WHITTEMORE — Beryl Bisenius, 69, of Whittemore, died on Saturday (October 25, 2003) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore with the Rev. Victor Ramaeker officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

LAVON E. HUNTER

CLEAR LAKE — LaVon E. Hunter, 95, of Clear Lake died Saturday (October 25, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for LaVon will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the Wayside Chapel of First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia Ave., with Rev. Jo Frahm-Watkins officiating. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. in Highland Cemetery in Mystic, Iowa. Visitation for LaVon will be held one hour prior to services at the Wayside Chapel on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

LaVon E. Walker was born February 15, 1908, the daughter of John T. and Cordia A. (Bennett) Walker in Milo, Iowa. She graduated from Nevada High School in Nevada, Iowa and went on to Normal Training to become a teacher.

LaVon E. Walker was united in marriage to Dr. James Hunter Jr. on December 31, 1928, in Nevada, Iowa. LaVon and her husband lived in Nevada until 1937 when they moved to Mason City and to Clear Lake in 1953. LaVon was a dental assistant for her husband for 33 years, retiring in 1972. Following her husband’s death in 1972 LaVon became a caregiver for both of her parents until their deaths. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years where she participated in the Leah Circle. LaVon was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, AARP, and the H.E.O. Study Club. In her remaining years LaVon spent time visiting her family and friends. Following the loss of her best friend Thelma Gilbert in 1995 she was able to remain in her own home with the loving help of caregivers; Shirley, Delores, Blondie and Carol.

Those left to cherish LaVon’s memory are; her daughter, Dr. DuRee H. Eaton and husband, Dr. Richard G. Eaton, of Pelham Manor, N. Y.; granddaughters, Holly R. Eaton of Silver Spring, Md. and Hillary K. Eaton of Brewster, Ma.; nephew, John Walker of Alameda, Calif.; niece, Nancy Walker of Saratoga Springs, N. Y.; nephew, Bryan Walker of Carmel, Calif.

LaVon was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. James Hunter Jr. in 1972; a grandson, Dr. Bradford Hunter Eaton; and one brother, J.B. Walker.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sheckler Colonial Chapel 114 North Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with Rev. Robert Snitzer of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Crystal Lake officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

BRITT— James L. Smith, Jr., 52, of Britt died Sunday (October 26, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

THOMAS ‘MAC’ DRESBACH

MASON CITY —Thomas “Mac” Dresbach, 70, of Mason City, died Monday (Oct. 20, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services for “Mac” will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W. with the Rev. Sarah Rohret Odoom officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Gravside military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veteran’s Memorial Association.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given the “Mac” Dresbach Memorial Fund.

Thomas “Mac” Dresbach was born March 20, 1933, in Mason City, the son of Ralph and Ima Dresbach.

“Mac” graduated from Clear Lake High School and served in the United States Army as a chief medic.

Following his honorable discharge, “Mac” returned to Mason City and worked for Herb and George TV Repair.

“Mac” was united in marriage to Maxine Stille on June 21, 1959 in Goodell, Iowa.

“Mac” worked for several area businesses, and his last employment was as an E.M.T. with Snell’s Ambulance Service.

“Mac” enjoyed fishing, camping and took special pride in his vegetable garden.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Maxine Dresbach, of Mason City; son, Rodney Dresbach and wife, Lena, of Kalispell, Mont.; daughter, Tammy Dresbach, of Fairborn, Ohio; son, Major Terry Dresbach and wife, Sharon, of Richlands, N. C.; grandson, Aaron Dresbach, of Kalispell, Mont.; sister, Tomme Ann Weaver and husband, Harrison, of DeLand, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents;and one sister, Fern Dresbach.

HOWARD D. LOVIK

ORCHARD — Howard D. Lovik, 76, of rural Orchard, died Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Howard was born to Henry and Anna (Winterton) Lovik on Oct. 1, 1927, at Forest City. He attended rural schools.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Howard was united in marriage to Belvia Wood Ring on Aug. 7, 1976, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. To this union one son, Brian Henry, was born.

Howard was retired from farming and had worked in the foundry at Oliver in Charles City. He belonged to Orchard American Legion Post 641.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1921 317th St., south of Osage, with the Rev. Christian F. Gugel officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd with military graveside services by Orchard American Legion Post 641.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Visitation will continue one hour before services on Thursday at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Belvia, of Orchard; one son, Brian Lovik and his wife, Lexia, of Dawson Springs, Ky.;five stepchildren, Monty Ring and his wife,Twyla, of Greene, Teresa Dorsey and her husband, Pat, of Osage, Greg Ring, of Orchard, Arlys May and her husband, Russ of Kasson, Minn., Bruce Ring and his wife, Rita During, of St. Paul, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clemons Lovik, of Mitchell, Harley Lovik of Sherrill, and Wayne Lovik of Floyd; two sisters, Ethel Holcomb of Des Moines and Dorothy Harris of Floyd; and many nieces and nephews.

LLOYD M. MAYO

DES MOINES — Lloyd M. Mayo, 84, went to be with the Lord on Thursday (Oct. 23, 2003).

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd. in Clive.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Brooks Funeral Care and 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery located at 11495 265th St. (Highway 18) in Mason City.

Lloyd was born March 24, 1919 in Zumbrota, Minn., moving to Mason City when he was a small child.

He was a truck route salesman and delivered meat products most of his career; retiring from Armour and Company after 30 years.

Lloyd and his wife, Malinda, moved to Grinnell in 1977, taking full retirement in 1986. After the loss of his wife in 1995, he moved to Urbandale.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Malinda; daughter, Carolyn; his parents, two brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his son, Jim; daughters, Diane Rasmus, Jolene Hilsabeck; and Cheri Crawford; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and brother, Louis.

He will be deeply missed by all his family and friends for his quick wit and sense of humor.

Lloyd enjoyed fishing and carpenter work, which included building two homes with friends, Albert and Larry Ewers.

GREENE — Mary E. Bliss, 73 of 12784 Ivy Ave., Greene, died Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, with the Rev. Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Reid’s Funeral Chapel in Greene where there will be a public scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services on Thursday.

ROCKWELL — Lowell L. Hart, 76, of Bettendorf, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm St. in Rockwell, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with military graveside services provided by the Rockwell American Legion Gallagher Post #208.

LUVERNE — Henry J. Hinz, 89, of LuVerne, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona.

Funeral services will held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church in LuVerne, with the Rev. Mark Petersen officiating. Burial will be in the LuVerne Cemetery.

MASON CITY — Wayne A. Page, 76, of 4 Third St. N.E., died Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Wayne was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Mason City, the son of Arthur D. and Ina (Pearce) Page. He attended Mason City schools.

Wayne worked as a truck driver for Dewitt Trucking. He received many safety awards during his driving career.

Wayne married Beverly A. Christian on Sept. 11, 1949, in Mason City. He was active in Mason City Trail Riders Association, loved raising horses and attending rodeos with his son, Steve.

He enjoyed spending time outdoors on his acreage watching football and old Western movies.

Wayne also enjoyed taking trips with his grandsons and attending their sporting activities.

He spent time with friends at his favorite hangout, Pro’s Sandwich Shop.

Wayne is survived by his son, Steven A. Page and wife, Mary, of Mason City; grandsons, Brandon, Bryce and Brock Page, of Mason City; great-granddaughters, Miranda and Justice; great-grandsons, Brody and Devan.

NORA SPRINGS — William “Bill” Quinlan, 95, of Forest City, formerly of 216 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

William Richard Quinlan was born Nov. 10, 1907, to Jesse and Anna (Johnson) Quinlan at Minot, N.D. At an early age, the family moved to Jefferson, Iowa. William received his education in the Jefferson school system. He attended Iowa State University and received his certification as a buttermaker. He worked in creameries at Jefferson, Colwell, Cresco, and Nora Springs for 42 years.

On Oct. 12, 1935, he was united in marriage to Mildred Zimmerman at Waverly, Iowa. After the loss of two daughters, another daughter, Marian, was born in 1945.

After retirement, he drove school bus and spent time helping others who were less able. He continued raising bees which was a lifelong hobby and later a small family business.

Many people came to the house to purchase honey, some as far away as New York and California.

Mildred entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 1996 and in 1997 William joined her there.

In January of 2001, he transfered to the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City, Iowa. He received excellent care in both places.

His sense of humor helped him to make many friends of both residents and staff.

He was an avid baseball fan, enjoyed gardening, pitching horseshoes, and visiting with family and friends.

He enjoyed the Sporting News and throughout his entire life read hometown newspapers for news of friends and current events.

William was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church at Jefferson and was a member of the United Methodist Church at Nora Springs.

He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Morning Star Lodge No. 159, A.F. & A.M. of Jefferson, Iowa.

William is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Danny and Marian Lenz, of Forest City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred, in 1997; and two infant daughters. BRITT — James L. Smith Jr. 52, of Britt, Iowa passed away Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Jim, the son of James L. and Doris Corman Smith Sr., was born Dec. 19, 1950, in Forest City, Iowa. He grew up and attended school in Britt, graduating from Britt High School in 1969. Following graduation, he attended Sheldon Lineman Vocational School. He then returned to Britt to farm with his father.

In September of 1970, Jim was united in marriage with Janet Furst at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, the couple made their home on a farm south of Britt.

Jim enjoyed working at Kiefer Built in Kanawha. He was also a reserve officer for the Britt and Kanawha police departments and had been a reserve officer for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department since 1980. Jim also enjoyed police pistol competition and was last classified as a marksman.

Jim treasured the time spent with his kids and grandsons. He enjoyed hunting, going out with his Kanawha Harley Group, riding his Harley, and going to Sturgis.

Jim was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt. He became a member of the Iowa State Reserves Law Officers Association in 1980, and served as the association President in 1987.

He was a member of KODA Friends of the NRA and Lifetime member of the NRA, and the Algona Hog Chapter.

Jim is survived by his wife, Janet, of Britt; three daughters and their families, Bobby Jo Andreasen and her husband, Chris, and their sons, Austin and Aiden of Des Moines; Marty Smith of Kissimmee, Fla., and Jamie Hejlik and her husband, Jason, and their son, Jake, of Garner; parents, James L. and Doris Smith Sr. of Britt; three sisters and their families, Debra Trulson and her husband, Pat, and their children, of Britt; Cyndi Zeigler and her husband, Ron, and their children, of Swisher; and Kristi Hejlik and her husband, Mike, and their children of Britt.

Dawn Danette Swanson, the daughter of Dallas and Sharon Luft Bauer, was born Jan. 6, 1960, in Fort Campbell, Ky. Her childhood years were spent in various Iowa communities. She attended high school in Britt and Clear Lake. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1978.

Dawn married Randy Eugene Swanson on July 25, 1981, in Spencer. Following their marriage, they lived in Spencer, where she worked at UPS for fourteen and a half years and was co-owner of Audio Video Connection with her husband, Randy.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer.

Dawn passed away at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, on Saturday (Oct. 25, 2003) at the age of 43.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Jinger Jo; both sets of grandparents: Peter and Fern Bauer and Howard and Lucille Luft; one niece, Abigail Gould; and one nephew, Gabriel Gould.

PINE CITY, Minn. — Katherine C. Trigas was born June 20, 1919 and died on Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) at her home in Pine City.

She was the beloved wife of Louis; Loving Mother and Grandmother.

She joined her Lord and her loved ones who preceded her in death, loving Mother Irene, Father Christ Poulos and precious Daughter Eirini.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 46 years, Louis; precious son, John and his wife Jane (Forstner); precious grandchildren, Elias, Christopher and Katerina (Katina). Katherine’s life revolved with unconditional love and deep devotion around her children and grand children. She was a great YiaYia! Long time member of St. Mary’s (Minneapolis) and St. George’s (St. Paul) Greek Orthodox Churches.

Dustin C. Wagner was born on April 17, 1985, the son of Dennis and Debra Wagner in Iowa City. Dustin was a 2003 graduate of Northwood-Kensett High School and was a North Iowa Area Community College student.

Dustin loved to hunt and drive his race car. He was loved very much by many friends and family. Dustin was an engineering student and determined to win the Powerball one day.

Dustin cherished the time he spent with his friends and family. He had a charismatic personality and knew how to make everyone around him smile. He had a great friend and mentor in his Grandpa Harvey and his Dad.

Dustin had aspired to be part of the NASCAR racing team someday. He was a self-proclaimed genius and had dreamed of becoming a success.

SIOUX CITY — Ardys Blanchard, 87, died Friday (Oct. 17, 2003) at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center.

Ardys Smith was born Oct. 30, 1915, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Sidney and Maude (Fry) Smith.

She graduated in 1932 from West high school in Waterloo. She was an active member of the Congregational Church.

She graduated from ISTC in 1937 where she was voted Woman Student of the year in 1936. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

She married Gordon W. Blanchard on Jan. 1, 1938, in Waterloo. She taught school at Wheatland, Olin, Nora Springs and Mason City. She taught for 15 years at NIACC in Mason City.

Ardys was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Mason City where she had been a deacon.

She was a willing worker who helped her husband with family parties and bridge tournaments at the YMCA.

Ardys was always helping others and enjoyed baking cookies to give to people.

She and Gordon lived in Mason City for 58 years.

After moving to Sioux City in March, she was a resident of Bickford Cottage.

Her parents and a grandson, David Scott Williams, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Gordon; three daughters: Barbara and George Williams of Huntington Calif., Kathie and Tom Anderson, of Sioux City and Jeanie and Tim Lindgren of Waterloo; one brother, Ted and Joyce Smith, of Overland Park Kan.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ardys was dearly loved and will be missed by her family and friends.

Mary Ellen d’Happart was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa, a daughter of Arthur d’Happart and Opal Pauline Sheppard d’Happart Bisterfelt, and died Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

She received her education at the College Hill High School in Cedar Falls. She entered the United States Air Force on Aug. 16, 1949. While she was in the Air Force she was married to Arthur Barnes and to this union was born a daughter named Pamela Lee.

Following her discharge on Aug. 24, 1950, she returned home and worked at Rath Packing Plant as a secretary. She also worked at the telephone company in Kansas City.

On March 10, 1956, she was united in marriage to Bernard Nicklaus in Parkersburg. To this union were born Lynn Etta, Bernard Lawrence Jr. and Debra Sue.

On June 19, 1981, she was married to Donald E. Bliss at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home at 1261 East 18th Street in Des Moines, where she was employed by Kelly Services. They moved to their home in rural Greene in 1998.

Mary enjoyed cooking, canning, crafts, bowling, gardening, polka dancing, and Blue Grass festivals.

Mary was a member of the Polka Club of Iowa and the Society for the Preservation of Blue Grass Music.

She was baptized June 21, 1931, at the Methodist Church in Villisca.

She was a faithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Parkersburg where she taught Sunday school, and was active in her church circle and studied the Bethel Series.

After moving to Greene Don and Mary were faithful members of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Donald E. Margaret B. Smith was born Nov. 25, 1919, in rural Rockford, the daughter of Clark and Lettie (Krambeer) Bell. She attended country school, graduating from Charles City High School, class of 1937.

She had taught school for three years in the rural school district.

Margaret was united in marriage to Dayle R. Smith on Aug. 11, 1939, in Elkader.

Margaret’s interest included raising hogs for several years on their farm near Colwell and tending to her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.

She enjoyed playing cards, making crafts and attending many school activities that her grandchildren participated in through the years.

Margaret was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, of which she also belonged to the Ruth Circle, the Help-A-Neighbor Club, Colwell Thursday Culture Club, and the Birthday Card-Players Club.

Margaret’s greatest joy in life was being blessed with all of her grandchildren, the many friendships she made and kept throughout her lifetime and the enduring love she shared with her husband for 64 years.

Dayle and Margaret were avid travelers and attempted to visit each state within the U.S. throughout their lives.

She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her husband Dayle; two sons, Steve (Karolyn) of Cedar Rapids and Mike (Barb) of Charles City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister, Shirley Nehls, of Mason City.

CAROLINE A. STREET

OSAGE — Caroline A. Street, 82, of Osage, died Monday (Oct. 27, 2003) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Caroline was born Aug. 27, 1921, near Scandia, Kan., the daughter of William and Mabel (Rasmussen) Street. She grew to womanhood in the Scandia community. She attended elementary school in Pleasantvale (Parkhill) School in Republic County, Kan. She went to Scandia High School for three years and then went to Republic City School her senior year to get normal training.

After graduation in 1939, she taught in Ash Grove school for two years. She then moved to Osage, Iowa, with her parents and brothers.

That fall, she returned to Republic County and taught in the Center School near Courtland, Kan. In the spring, she returned to Mitchell County and taught four years at Mount Hope School, one year at Wardell, four years in Burr Oak, and four years at Rock rural schools. She received her two-year elementary degree from Luther College and her BA degree from Upper Iowa University.

In 1957, she went to McIntire, Iowa, and taught there until reorganization. She then went to Riceville for 26 years until retirement in 1986.

She attended church, Sunday school, and league in the Methodist Church in Scandia, Kan.

She joined the First United Methodist Church in Osage with her family in 1945, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school for many years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, WaTanYe, and the retired teachers.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Karen Nichols Dungan officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour before services Friday at the church.

She is survived by two nieces, Kathleen Gauger (Mark) of Forest City, and Linda Dishman (Rodney) of Charles City; three nephews, Thomas Street (Mary) of Osage, Patrick Street (Kristi) of Morgantown, Ky., and Roy Street (Deb) of Stacyville.

She was preceded by her father, William, in 1954; her mother, Mabel, in 1973; two brothers: Irvin in 1994 and Alfred in 1995

DEXTER — Jack Gary Dunton, 65, died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines of sudden heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Christ’s Church at Fox Creek Center of Waukee, with burial at 2:30 p.m. at the Meservey Cemetery in Meservey.

Gary retired from NCR after 34 years of service. He was a Navy veteran and a member of the Crossroad Evangelical Free Church of Earlham.

Gary is survived by his wife, Melva, of Dexter; mother, Dorothy Dunton, of Naples, Fla.; daughter, Julie Richards and husband, Joe, of Waukee; son, Jon Dunton and wife, Shelley, of Van Meter; son, Jason Dunton and his wife, Megan, of Grimes; sister, Deanna Darr and husband, Marlin, of Johnston; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

CHARLES CITY— Margaret B. Smith, 83, of 805 Freeman St., Charles City, died early Tuesday morning (Oct. 28, 2003) in the care of Hospice at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

Margaret B. Smith was born Nov. 25, 1919, in rural Rockford, the daughter of Clark and Lettie (Krambeer) Bell. She attended country school, graduating from Charles City High School, Class of 1937.

She taught school for three years in the rural school district.

Margaret was united in marriage to Dayle R. Smith on Aug. 11, 1939, in Elkader.

Margaret’s interests in-cluded raising hogs for several years on their farm near Colwell and tending to her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.

She enjoyed playing cards, making crafts and attending many school activities that her grandchildren participated in through the years.

Margaret was a lifelong member of St. John Evan- gelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, of which she also belonged to the Ruth Circle, the Help-A-Neighbor Club, Colwell Thursday Culture Club, and the Birthday Card-Players Club.

Margaret’s greatest joy in life was being blessed with all of her grandchildren, the many friendships she made and kept throughout her lifetime and the enduring love she shared with her husband for 64 years.

Dayle and Margaret were avid travelers and attempted to visit each state within the U.S. throughout their lives.

She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all.

Those grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in her life are her husband Dayle; two sons, Steve (Karolyn) of Cedar Rapids and Mike (Barb) of Charles City; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her sister, Shirley Nehls, of Mason City.

She is also survived by one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

CATHERINE MARIE RANKIN

MANLY — Catherine Marie Rankin, 89, of Manly, formerly of Omaha, Neb., died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Bethel Unit-ed Methodist Church in Manly with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time Friday at the church.

Catherine Marie Rankin was born on Sept. 26, 1914, in Arlington, Neb., the daughter of Mel and Mary Catherine (Offen) Winset. She attended and graduated from Arlington High School and also graduated from Grand Island Business College.

After completing her schooling she worked in ac-counting for Civil Services in Omaha.

She was united in marriage to Louis Rankin on April 9, 1938, in Arlington, Neb. He preceded her in death in February of 1985.

After their marriage Catherine enjoyed staying at home loving and raising her family and she also helped her husband and his partner keeping books in their business Lycan & Rankin Heating and Cooling business in Omaha, Neb.

Catherine moved to Manly in August of 1985, to be near her daughter, Sara.

She enjoyed sewing, knitting, reading, playing the piano and organ, playing card games, watching sports, but her great love and enjoyment was her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly, was very active in the Pearl United Methodist Church in Omaha, Willing Workers Circle in Manly, and was on the Auxiliary board at the Manly Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Larry Rankin and his wife, Martha, of Omaha, Neb., James Rankin and his wife, Val, of Colton, S.D., and Sara Stevenson and her husband, Dick, of Manly; five grandchildren, Lisa Gustafson and her husband, Alan, and Mark Rankin and his wife, Renae, all of Omaha, Neb., Tami Conley of Oskaloosa, Mindy Meier and her husband, Joel, of Swaledale, and Derek Stevenson of Olathe, Kan.; eight great-grandchildren, Kassandra and Grace Rankin, Ciara and Casie Conley, Zane and Sean Gustafson, and Morgan and Jason Louis Meier; as well as other relatives and friends.

Roger Lewellyn Larson was born on May 13, 1931, in Otranto Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, to Leonard and Dorothy Collins Larson. Roger graduated from Carpenter High School in 1949.

He served his country in the United States Navy. He moved to Carpenter in 1941 and lived in the area until 1985 when he and his wife moved to Swaledale.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly, of Swaledale; four sons, Timothy Larson, of Swaledale, William Larson and wife, Sandy, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Ronald Larson, of Minneapolis, Minn. and David Larson; five grandchildren, Sara, Beth, Amanda, Rachel and Cody; one sister, Carolyn Davis and husband, Dennis, of Kensett.

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Marjorie M. Kaduce, 84, 319 Locust, Cincinnati, Ohio, died Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003) where she shared her home with her daughter, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hodapp Funeral Home, 7401 Vine St. in Cincinnati.

The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.

Marjorie was born to Martha and Alonzo Liffick on Feb. 27, 1919, in Terre Haute, Ind.

She married Joseph I. Kingston in Mount Vernon, Ind., in 1935. To this union 12 children were born, Georgia (Myles) Shepherd, of Cincinnati, Merlin (Pauline) King-ston, of Elizabeth City, N.J., Wilma (Rodney) Stromley, of Minnesota, Delores (James) Dodge, of Mason City, William (Pat) Kingston, of Northwood, James (Sue) Kingston, of Mason City, Martha Duty, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Kenneth (Kathy) Kingston, of Bellbrook, Ohio, and Steven Kingston, of Clear Lake, Iowa.

On Aug. 17, 1957, she married Edward Kaduce and had two children, Edward Kaduce, of Nebraska and Debra Kaduce, of Dayton, Ohio.

Marjorie was a very caring person who worked at many nursing homes in Ohio, Nora Springs and Mason City.

She had a great love for dogs and cats. She also wrote cat stories for her grandchildren.

She will be gladly missed by a host of family and friends; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; and great-great-great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Harold Watson, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; a set of twin boys; an infant daughter; her parents; and brothers and sisters.

Burial will be at a later date in Mason City.

DECORAH — L. “Sid” Lorentzen, 82, of Decorah, died Tuesday (Oct. 28, 2003) at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. at the First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Marion Pruitt Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Decorah, with full military rites at the graveside.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church. There will be a VFW Memorial Service at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

L. Sidney Lorentzen was born on Nov. 22, 1920, the son of Lars Peter and Bertha (Hustel) Lorentzen in Nora Springs. Sid was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Nora Springs. He attended school in Nora Springs graduating in 1938.

Sid enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1940 and was as-signed to the Third Marine Division; he reached the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. He saw combat in the Pacific in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Guam and Iwo Jima, where he was awarded the Bronze Star.

He married Mary Elizabeth Henderson upon his return to Nora Springs on May 27, 1945. They had two children, Lance and Christine.

Sid attended Chillicothe Business College, graduating in 1948. He was district manager for S. Riekes & Sons (later Alco Standard) for over 30 years.

They lived in the Quad Cities until 1988 when they moved to Decorah.

Sid was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Moline, Ill. and First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lorentzen, of Decorah; son, Lance Lorentzen and his wife, Elizabeth, of Decorah; daughter, Christine Kelly, of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Neil Kelly and wife, Robin, Geoff Kelly and wife, Tamara, Josh Bottorff and Brita Lorentzen; two great-granddaughters, Riley Kelly and Charlotte Kelly; four nieces and 11 nephews.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Leslie, Lloyd, L. Tilden and his infant sister, Loretta.

DWAYNE DALE VAN OORT

ANKENY — Dwayne Dale Van Oort, 77, went to be with the Lord on Sunday (Oct. 26, 2003). After a long illness, he died peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ankeny Evangelical Free Church, 118 NW Linden Ave. in Ankeny. Interment will be at a later date.

Dwayne was born Sept. 22, 1926, at home in Lyon County, Iowa, to Herman and Ottolena (Barendregt) Van Oort, the first of six children. He was a graduate of George, Iowa High School.

He married Dolores Manlove on Sept. 4, 1949. At an early age he worked for relatives in the restaurant business.

Dwayne was a salesman for the Clear Lake Bakery from 1950 to 1959. He then owned and operated Northwest Erection Services from 1959 until 1991. Starting in Clear Lake, he moved his business to Des Moines in 1966 and his family to Ankeny in 1967.

He was proud of his building involvement accomplishments: Capitol Square, many downtown Des Moines sky walks and parking structures, Civic Center, Carver-Hawkeye Arena, enclosure of Merle Hay Mall, Valley West Mall, South Ridge Mall and several Principal Financial projects were just a few.

Dwayne was a member of the Vine Street Gospel Chapel in Des Moines.

He loved traveling and at-tending special church meetings around the country. The special bonds that he had with people were an important part of his life. Dwayne also enjoy-ed his garden and spending time with his grandchildren.

Dwayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dolores; children, Steve (Darlene) of Ankeny, Terry (Cheryl) of Ankeny, Sherry (Steven) Gill, of Colfax and Tim (Mindy) of Urbandale; and 11 grandchildren, Thomas, Johnathan, David, Sarah, John, Josh, Jeremy, Jake, Anna, Amee and Stephanie; sister, LaVonne (Marvin) Hanson, of Kansas City, Mo.; and brothers, Homer (June) of Garner, and Larry (Pat) of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Roger and Cornie.

Jesse was born in Mason City, Iowa, on March 29, 1983, the son of Carl (Mike) Melver and Shirley (Sherry) Beck.

Jesse moved to Clear Lake at the age of 12 and was adopted by Michael and Amy Mahaffey in 1998.

Jesse is survived by his parents, Michael and Amy Mahaffey; his sisters, Michaela, Megan and Whitney; and a brother, Jordan, all of Clear Lake. He is also survived by many other relatives.

Lyla C. Ferley was born June 19, 1925, on a farm in Winnebago County, the daughter of Tommy and Stena (Rustad) Jacobson.

On Dec. 19, 1943, she was united in marriage to Glenn O. Ferley at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minn., by the Rev. Knutson.

Lyla was a loving, "fulltime" mother of seven. She was Glenn's best friend and helper in everything they did.

She loved her family and she loved crocheting and making gifts for each one of them, along with gifts for a countless number of dear friends.

She was very active in Silver Lake Lutheran Church and community and will always be remembered for her "Memorial Day Potato Salad".

Lyla is survived by her loving husband of almost 60 years, Glenn Ferley, of Northwood; seven children, Cheryl and her husband, Larry Schuttler, of Grafton, Paul and his wife, Sharyl Ferley, of Northwood, Linda and her husband, Jerry Holty, of Hastings, Minn.; Gerald and his wife, Lucretia Ferley, of Northwood, Shirley and her husband, Terry Turvold, of Cottage Grove, Minn., Duane and his wife, Solla Ferley, of Hastings, Minn., and Glenda and her husband, Steve Schiller, of Prescott, Wis.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grand-children; one brother, Glen and his wife, Colleen Jacobson, of Albert Lea, Minn.; sister-in-law, Janice Jacobson of Lake Mills; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

GERTRUDE M. ROSENKILD

Gertrude was born July 25, 1910, in Miller, Neb., the daughter of Rev. Willard W. and Alma (Harris) Kratzer.

As a young girl, Gertrude and her five brothers lived in several Midwest towns where the ministry called their father. She graduated from Ansley High School, Ansley, Neb., in 1928.

On Sept. 29, 1929, Gertrude married Harold E. Rosenkild at the home of her parents in Audubon, Iowa. After living in Missouri Valley and Atlantic the family moved to Mason City in 1948.

Gertrude loved her church family and was a devoted wife and loving mother. She and her husband built a home in P.M. Park in Clear Lake, in the early 1950's. Having her grandchildren spend time there was such fun for her.

Besides being a homemaker, Gertrude was a beautiful, prolific poet. Genealogy also captured her interest in 1975.

Gertrude was a member of the Double F Club in Clear Lake, Queen Rebekah Lodge, past president of Clear Lake Women's Club and the Clear Lake Progress Club.

She was in the North Central Iowa Genealogy Club, Genealogical societies of Ohio State, Laurence Co. Ohio, Schuyler Co. Mo., and Iowa State.

She was an associate member of the Telephone Pioneers and was on the Iowa State Board of United Church Women and of Christian Women's Fellowship. She was named club woman of the year in 1963-64.

She had three genealogy books published and also some poetry books, among them "My Gift of Love".

Gertrude was a former member of Clear Lake Christian Church and then First Christian Church in Mason City. Her faith and love of Jesus guided every aspect of her life and her service to others.

Special thanks from Gertrude's family go to the compassionate staff of Health Center 1, second floor West at Good Shepherd for their nearly seven years of tender care, especially Linda Anderson. May God bless you all.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Doris Alman and husband, Rudy, of Mason City, and Rosemary Seidel of Mason City; five grandchildren, Kerry Halverson and husband, Michael, Scott Alman and wife, Judy, Barbara Smith and husband, Scott, Mark Seidel and wife, Mary Ann, and Tamara Watson and husband, Kevin; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; and her husband, Harold.

CLARKSVILLE - Peter Timmer, 102, of Clarksville, died Thursday (Oct. 30, 2003) at the Waverly Municipal Hospital in Waverly.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in the Lynwood Cemetery in Clarksville.

HAMPTON - Antonia Rocha, 80, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Oct. 29, 2003) at the Hampton Health Care Center.

ROCKWELL - Clara M. Bentjen, 94, formerly of Rockwell, died Wednesday (Oct. 29, 2003) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake, where she had been a resident since August of 1998.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Rockwell Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Bolinger officiating. There is no visitation planned.
