KLEMME — James Austin, 58, of Klemme died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

HELEN BUDDENHAGEN


MASON CITY — Helen Emma Buddenhagen, 90, of Mason City and formerly of Aurelia, passed away at 7:40 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia, with Pastor Larry Lemke officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery north of Aurelia.

There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. today at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Helen was born on Oct. 8, 1912, in Afton Township, Cherokee County, Iowa to Henry and Emma (Wogahn) Sump. She attended country school in Afton Township.

She married Elmer Buddenhagen on Jan. 19, 1939, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Aurelia, Iowa.

She and her husband farmed in Afton Township for many years, moving to Aurelia in 1964. She lived in Aurelia until moving to Mason City eight years ago, where she lived with her daughter.

She was as member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Aurelia and former member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

She was currently attending Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City, Iowa.

She was a member of the Ladies Aid, the Afton Community Club and several bridge clubs.

She enjoyed baking chocolate chip cookies, crocheting, knitting, playing cards, her church and sharing time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Oct. 8, 1984; two brothers, Clarence and Roy Sump; and a sister, Elenore, in infancy.

She is survived by two daughters: Myrna Borchert and her husband, Bruce, of Glendale, Ariz., and Carolyn Smuck and her husband, Butch, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Brian Borchert and wife, Linda, of Peoria, Ariz., Jeff Borchert and wife, Katie, of Ft. Collins, Colo., Matt Smuck and wife, Michele, of Mason City, and Melissa Borchardt and husband, Daniel, of Davenport; four great-grandchildren: Derek, Andrew and Ryan Smuck, and Kyle Borchert; three sisters-in-law: Irene Sump of Richland, Wash., Florence Buddenhagen of Aurelia, and Lily Kolpin of Hartley; a brother-in-law, Reinhold Braunschweig of Wisconsin.

KIESTER, Minn. — Joseph P. Endris, 75, of Kiester, Minn., died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at St. John’s Lutheran Home in Albert Lea.

ALLISON — Henry E. Hoodjer, 97, of Allison, formerly of Clarksville, died Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at the Allison Care Center in Allison.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, with the Rev. Jerry Laehn and Associate in Ministry Peg Torrin officiating. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

MAURICE FLINT MULLER


OSAGE — Maurice Flint Muller, 86, of Osage, died Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) at his home.

Maurice was born June 4, 1917, in Cedar Township near Osage. He was the second son of Albert Herman and Mable (Flint) Muller. He attended rural school and Osage High School.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church and was later confirmed and baptized in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage.

Maurice farmed with his father until his marriage to Adelaide Lindley in 1939 at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

They farmed in the early years of their marriage. He then worked as an implement salesman for Ben Chatman and Wright John Deere for 10 years.

He then returned to farming in 1953 on the home farm west of Osage.

They moved to the St. Ansgar area in 1965 after a tornado took their farm outside of Osage. They lived south of Toeterville until their retirement.

In 1988, they moved to their present home in Osage.

Maurice was a charter member and officer of the 4-H Foundation and was a 4-H leader. He was active in Farm Bureau, served in several offices in the church council and building committees.

He was also on the Cedar Valley Electric Cooperative Board of Directors for 19 years and was a director of Dairyland Power of LaCrosse for 10 years.

During Maurice’s retirement he enjoyed woodworking, working in his vegetable garden, playing pool with several friends, and visiting with friends and family.

Family members and friends have many beautiful wood pieces of his making.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends as he was always there for them, to listen to, to comfort, to love.

Funeral services will be at held 2 p.m. today at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services today at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Adelaide, of Osage; two sons, Larry Muller and his wife, Nancy, of Osage, and Lance Muller of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Lorraine Elliott and her husband, Larry, of Cedar Falls, and Lynne Beyer of Northwood; grandchildren, Lynn Scott and her husband, Mark, of Lawler, Mike Muller and his wife, Denee, of Waverly, Larry Muller Jr. and his wife, Rhonda, of Osage, Mark Nelson, of California, Jason Elliott and his wife, Lucia, of Cedar Falls, Tonya Sparrow and her husband, Jason, of Decorah, and Travis Beyer of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Stephen, Shanda and Stacia Scott of Lawler, Kalie and Melanie Muller of Waverly, Bruce and Sydney Elliott of Cedar Falls, Tyler of Wales, and Madison Maxwell and Benton Sparrow of Decorah, Sophie and Owen Muller of Osage; brother-in-law, Orlando Lindley and his wife, DeLoris, of Nora Springs; five nieces and nephews

HAMPTON — Dick “Sassy” Perez, 80, of Hampton, died Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at the VA Hospital in Des Moines.

MASON CITY — Clement F. “Clem” Platt, 69, of 408 S. Tennessee Place, died Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors conducted by members of Mason City Veteran’s Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel and until time of services Friday.

HAROLD L. RITZMAN


NASHUA — Harold L. Ritzman, 83, of Nashua, died Monday afternoon (Sept. 29, 2003) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, after heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Paul Wilcox officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens with military rites conducted by the Ralph W. Nicholson VFW Post 6792 of Nashua.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Sunnyside Chapel and one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

Harold Leaon Ritzman, son of Vern and Flossie “Truax” Ritzman was born Sept. 15, 1920, in Madison Township, Butler County, Iowa.

Mr. Ritzman received his education in the Dumont area.

On July 14, 1941, he was united in marriage to Elsena De Vries. To this union were born four children, Maxine Heim, of Dubuque, Judy (Harold) Bailey, of Charles City, William (Nancy) Ritzman, of Charles City and Lois (Henry) Rover of Nora Springs.

Harold served in the Army three years in Pacific Area during World War II and upon his return from service, farmed near Dumont then Ardale, and in 1962 purchased a farm near Charles City, where they lived for 23 years. In 1985 they retired from farming and moved to Nashua.

In 1991, Harold and Elsena celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on April 24, 1998; and one sister, Verla Penticoff.

He is survived by his four children; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Vern Jr. of Hampton; two sisters, Marlis Nielson, of Waverly, and Audrey Stemmerman, of Allison.

Mr. Ritzman was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church and also a lifetime member of the VFW at Nashua.

The family would like to take this opportunity to thank family and friends for their kindness; during the loss of their loved one.

GENEVIEVE STABENOW


GREENE — A funeral Mass for Genevieve Stabenow, 98, of 115 W. South St., will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene with Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First in Greene, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. followed by a rosary service conducted by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Visitation will continue one hour before services Thursday at the church.

Genevieve Stanton was born June 4, 1905, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Michael and Theresa (Downing) Stanton, and died Saturday (Sept. 27, 2003) at her home in Greene.

She received her education in the country school until the fourth grade and then attended Sacred Heart Academy until the 11th grade and graduated from the Greene High School in 1923. She taught in the Butler County rural schools until her marriage.

On Feb. 10, 1926, she was united in marriage to William Stabenow at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene. They moved to the family farm where she worked side by side with her husband until they retired to a home that Bill helped build in Greene.

Genevieve was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greene, St. Jude’s Circle, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, charter member of the West Side Sewing Circle, and a former member of the Jenny Wilder Teachers Club.

She enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several clubs. She took great pleasure in cooking for her family and friends. She saw to it that you never went away hungry.

She gave her family unconditional love and was accepting of any changes in her life. Her motto was “Peace at any Price”.

Those thankful for having shared her life include her two daughters: Evelyn Stabenow and Rita (Richard) Merfeld, all of Greene; a niece Carla (Michael) Phalen of Cedar Falls, who was raised with the family; three grandchildren, Michael Merfeld of Greene, Theresa (Brook) Vickery of Rosemount, Minn., and David (Lynne) Merfeld of Walla Walla, Wash.; seven great-grandchildren: Zachary, Trent and Tyler Merfeld of Greene, Rachel, Mark, and Jenna Vickery of Rosemount, Minn., and Jordan Merfeld of Seattle, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 6, 1984; her parents; two sisters; Catherine Merfeld and Marie Gales; and one brother, Ambrose Stanton.

James Robert Austin, the son of Cecil Robert and Florence Juanita (Ward) Austin, was born Feb. 3, 1945, at Mason City.

He attended school at Easton, Minn., and then worked as a mechanic in the North Iowa area.

On Feb. 21, 1970, he married Joyce Marie Steenblock at Rockford, Ill. They made their home near Klemme.

In 1986, Jim joined the family of Yohnco Ready Mix where he was employed as the head mechanic for all of the plants in North Iowa.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, his job and car racing.

CLEAR LAKE — Larry Lee Baker, 46, of 1613 N. 8th St., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) of congestive heart failure at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Larry is survived by his parents, Robert and Marion (Kelck) Baker, of Clear Lake, a son, Shane Baker of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister Dianne (Dan) Abbott, of Waterloo; a brother, Denny (Patti) Baker, of Clear Lake; and nine nieces and nephews.

Clement Francis Platt was born Nov. 21, 1933, at Algona, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Marking) Platt. He married Ileene Earles in 1957 at Mason City, and later married Rosemary Neuberger in 1986 at Sarasota, Fla.

Clem was a 1951 graduate of St. Cecelia’s Academy in Algona. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was employed at Interstate Power Company for over 31 years as a serviceman.

Clem and Rosemary enjoyed traveling in their RV, visiting 46 states. Clem made friends where ever he went.

He was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.

Clem is survived by his wife, Rosemary E. Platt, of Mason City; four daughters, Debbie Hrubes and her husband, Ron, of Britt, Kim Higgins, of Normal, Ill., Mariam Severson and her husband, Mark, of New Concord, Ohio, and Cindy Questionati and her husband, Joe, of Montgomery, Ala.; three sons, Kenneth Platt and his wife, Renate, of Muscatine, Jeff Platt, of Decatur, Ill., and Tim Platt, of Des Moines; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Rich, of Ames, Rose Sprout and her husband, Jim, of Algona, and Sister Mary Hermann Platt, of Algona; three brothers, Frances Platt and his wife, Maxine, of Algona, Herman Platt, of Algona, and Michael Platt and his wife, Donna, of Mankato, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Jean Platt, of Albuquerque, N.M.; a brother- in-law, Gale Leek, of Blooming Prairie, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo and Matthew Platt; a sister, Martha Leek; a grandson, Ryan Platt; a great-granddaughter, Surrender Peace Cox ; sisters-in-law, Mae and Harriett Platt; and a brother- in-law, Ed Rich.

DORRIS A. KNUTSON


LAKE MILLS — Dorris A. Knutson, 83, of Lake Mills, and longtime Arizona winter resident, died Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at the Touch Of Desert Class Home in Phoenix, Ariz.


Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons, Minn., with the Rev. Julie Fiske officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Emmons, Minn.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Best Funeral Home, Peoria, Ariz.

Dorris Arlene Knutson was born March 26, 1920, in Leland, the daughter of Eddie and Alma (Vold) Carlson. She attended school in Leland.

On March 24, 1940, she was united in marriage to Albert K. Knutson.

Albert and Dorris operated the Emmons Café for many years.

Dorris enjoyed a full life with Albert until he passed in 1994. They enjoyed trips to Norway, Alaska and throughout the U.S.

Winters in Arizona were always special to them being with family and friends they had there. Dorris thought so much of so many people.

The past few years she also enjoyed trips to Norway, Canada and a cruise with her daughter, Deb. She will be missed by many. Dorris did not want to be the center attraction, but always part of the action.

Dorris is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deb and Terry Anderson, of New River, Ariz.; son-in-law, James Doffing of Sun City, Ariz.; grandchildren, Shannon and Jeremy Anderson, Daniel Moe, Jodi and Jimi Doffing all in Arizona; and grandson, Dennis and wife, Loretta, of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-grandchildren, Asa and Ariel Anderson, Samantha and Billy Moe, Jaini Fabrizio, Kendra, Cassonova, Amber and Tyler Kalsow, all in Arizona; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruby and Luther Okland of Lake Mills, Lois and Raymond Schmidt of Chico, Calif.; along with many nephews, nieces and cousins.

Dorris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert; son, Dennis; daughter, Donna; three brothers, Vernon, Dean and Richard; along with several nephews.

H. HERBERT ‘HERB’ KLEWITZ


BANDON, Ore. — Memorial services for H. Herbert “Herb” Klewitz, 84, of Bandon, Ore., will be held at 11 a.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church in Bandon, with Pastor John Hubbard officiating. Cremation rites have been held. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Coos Bay, Ore.

H. Herbert Klewitz was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Berlin, Germany, the son of Max Oscar and Emma Anna (Kaulfuss) Klewitz and passed away Sunday (Sept. 28, 2003) in Coos Bay, Ore.

Herb was raised and educated in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., and attended one year at the University of Wisconsin on a football scholarship. He played for the Green Bay Packers before being drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. He graduated from Platteville Teachers College in Platteville, Wis., and taught high school at Colesburg, Iowa. He also taught and coached at Bristow, Iowa.

He married Madelyn Baker on Aug. 14, 1949, in Mason City.

They made their home in Millersburg, Iowa, where he taught and coached.

In 1953 they moved to Lemoore, Calif., and then in 1960, they moved to Garden Grove, Calif., where he taught and coached football at Bolsa Brande High School until re-tiring in 1979.

They moved to Bandon from Garden Grove, Calif., in 1979.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bandon.

Herb enjoyed carpentry and remodeling, he loved pets and pets loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Madelyn Klewitz, of Bandon, Ore.; two sons, Donn and wife, Virginia Klewitz, of Bandon, Ore., and Kent Klewitz, of Salem, Ore.; daughter, Mischelle Klewitz, of Bandon, Ore.; four granddaughters, Emma Klewitz of Langlois, Ore., Jean Klewitz, of Bandon, Ore., Katie Klewitz and Kimberly Klewitz, both of Coquille, Ore.; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by grandson, Kyle Klewitz.

MASON CITY — Ruth E. DeGraw, 83, of 1037 19th St. S.W., died Tuesday (Sept. 30, 2003) at the IOOF Home.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles, of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Ruth was born July 5, 1920, in Cedar Falls, the daughter of Glenn Allen and Lyda D. (McWilliams) DeGraw. Her family moved to Mason City in 1924.

Ruth graduated from Mason City High School in 1938. She was employed by Iowa Kemper Insurance Company for 47 years retiring in 1985.

Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and enjoyed sewing and reading.

Ruth is survived by three nephews, Jim Wilmot of Dallas, Ga., Dan Wilmot of Pahoa, Hawaii, and Dr. Barclay Bakkum of Aurora, Ill., niece, Bonnie Carnes, of Olympia Fields, Ill.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister.

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Jane Lee Fockler of Phoenix, Ariz. passed away Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003).

She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose kind spirit and sparkling sense of humor will be remembered by all who knew her.

She was born May 2, 1921, in Mason City, the daughter of Clayton and Frances (Sherwood) Berner.

Jane led a very fruitful and interesting life. Prior to marrying Jerry, her husband of 53 years, she taught eight grades in a one room rural school house.

Her first 21 years of marriage was spent in northern Iowa primarily being a home maker and raising four children.

Her husband’s work then caused them to move to new locations. First they spent 11 years in Boulder, Colo. There she became interested in women’s clothing; at one time she had her own Ladies Ready to Wear store.

Work assignments then caused a move to Shannon, Ireland, for three years. Life there fueled many trips to England and other European destinations. After that came an assignment of five years in Palo Alto, Calif., with a home in the village of Half Moon Bay.

Phoenix has been her home for the past 13 years.

She will be missed by many who dearly loved her, including husband, Jerry; son, John Fockler of England; daughter, Susan Lavelle of Lafayette, Colo.; daughter, Zoe Tancreti of Brookfield, Ohio; son, Bob Sandler of Denver, Colo.; brother, Dick Berner of Mason City; sister, Mary Holder, of San Diego, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

MASON CITY — Hattie “Lucille” Alvarez, 59, of 205 Fourth St. N.E., died early Monday morning (Oct. 1, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City due to complications of diabetes. No visitation or service is planned in Mason City; however, a memorial service will be held at a later date in Rapid City, S.D.

Hattie Lucille Alvarez was born Dec. 9, 1943 on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in Rosebud, S.D.

She was a member of the Sioux Tribe Indian Nation. She was the oldest daughter and second child of eight children born to Henrietta (Roubideaux) and Clement Shaw Sr. She attended school on the reservation in Rosebud, S.D.

For several years, Lucille was employed as a housekeeper by various hotels and motels in the Mason City area until she retired in 1990.

Lucille will be lovingly remembered by her family as a fabulous cook. She especially enjoyed preparing and eating Mexican food.

Some of her favorite leisure activities and interests included the companionship she had with her dog and two cats, collecting all types of ceramic statues, watching television, especially movies, and spending quality time nurturing her grandchildren.

Her children recall that their mother was fiercely independent, strong-willed, possessed a great sense of humor and was a very giving person. Lucille was always thinking of and willing to assist others.

Lucille will be missed dearly by family and friends who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her children, Olivia Nelson and her husband, Todd, of Mason City, Angel Zogg of North Platte, Neb., Robert Alvarez of Scotts Bluff, Neb., her father, Clement Shaw Sr. of Rapid City, S.D.; her sisters, Tina Curtis, Bette Shaw Liston and her husband, Kenny, and Charlene Ford; her brothers, Oliver “Sonny” Shaw Sr., Clement Shaw Jr., Wayne Shaw and his wife, Carmen, and Jeff Shaw and his wife, Tonya. Lucilles brothers and sisters all live in Rapid City, S.D. Lucille will also be sadly missed by seven grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding Lucille in death were her mother, Henrietta in 1998; and her aunt, Josephine Ferro.

Sarah “Ruth” Paul Auck was born on Aug. 24, 1911, in Oklahoma, the daughter of Milton and Elsie Louisa (Curtis) Smedley.

She was baptized in a Baptist Church and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran Church in Manly.

She grew up in the Rockwell area and attended and received her education in the Rockwell School system.

Ruth spent all of her married life in the Mason City area before moving to Nora Springs in 1979.

For almost 20 years she worked for Armour’s Meat Packing Company in Mason City and at the VFW in Mason City until her retirement.

She enjoyed gardening, working in her yard, flowers, plants, feeding and watching birds, picture puzzles, and loved to cook, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

Ruth had been a resident of the Nora Springs Care Center since July of 2000.

She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ron Paul and his wife, Patsy, of Bemidji, Minn., Phyllis Albert and her husband, David, of Cambria, Calif., and Janyce Behne and her husband, Ron, of Nora Springs; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Lettie Buchalstein of LaHabra, Calif., Alice Cogill of Mason City, and Reba Miller of Belmond; as well as other relatives and friends.

Fern was born Jan. 25, 1905, in Clear Lake to Oluf T. & Susan (Olson) Hansen.

She graduated from Clear Lake High Shool in 1922, where she was an honor student and a member of the girls traveling basketball team.

Fern attended the University of Iowa where she was president of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and president of the Pan Hellenic Association. She graduated in 1927 with a BA degree.

In 1931 she was married to Herman L. Boyle at her family home in Clear Lake. Immediately following the wedding they left by train and then by boat for South America where they lived in several different countries including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay.

After Herman’s retirement they moved to Clear Lake and operated a potato farm at Thompson, Iowa, and lived in Fern’s childhood home, where she lived until her health forced her to move to the care center.

Fern and Herman were involved in the operation of Oluf T. Hansen Dept. Store.

The store was started by her father in August of 1899.

Fern was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, where she was once an organist.

Fern had the honor of being the Grand Marshall of the Clear Lake 4th of July parade in 1999.

Fern was a very positive person who always found a way to make people feel special, and will be greatly missed by her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herman in 1994; and her sister, Geneveive (Doli) Morgan.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Jane Boyle; two nephews, Phillip and Tom Boyle; a niece, Carolyn Hart; a very special cousin, Erna Hansen Bevington; and the Valores and Russell Young family.

Diane Karen Grandt, the daughter of Casper and Mardella (Dreyer) Grandt, was born Aug. 16, 1949, at Lutheran Hospital in Hampton.

She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on Aug. 18, 1949, by Rev. Juhl. Diane was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hampton in June of 1993 by Pastor Joyce Guldager.

Diane attended Access, Inc., in Hampton for many years before entering Hampton Healthcare Center in January of 2001.

One of Diane’s greatest memories was when she met Little Jimmy Dickens at the Cattle Congress in Waterloo and was allowed to spend time with him back stage.

She enjoyed participating in the Special Olympics and was thrilled when she won a gold medal in the softball throw. Diane was a Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan.

Diane is survived by her mother, Mardella Grandt, of Latimer; one sister, Sharon Thielen and her husband, Gayhart, of Latimer; uncle and aunts, Kenneth Dreyer and his wife, Betty, of Latimer, Arlene Christman of Yuma, Ariz., Karen Meyer, of Florida; numerous nieces and nephews.

MINNEAPOLIS — Edward F. Schmitz, 42, of Minneapolis, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 23, 2003) at his home in Minneapolis.

Edward, the son of Jerome J. and Mercedes R. (Black) Schmitz, was born Dec. 12, 1960, in Hastings, Minn. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in Clear Lake, and attended NIACC in Mason City.

Edward served in the Marine Corps, and worked as a cement finisher. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was an avid fisherman, and a fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Edward is survived by his son, Edward Francis “Frankie” Schmitz, of Mason City: his daughter, Mary Ruth Schmitz, of Mason City; his mother, Mercedes Schmitz, of Hastings, Minn.; a brother, J. HANLONTOWN — Darleen Levitt Kaasa, 78, died Friday (Oct. 3, 2003) at her home in Hanlontown.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, 302 East Fourth Street, Hanlontown, with the Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Brush Point Cemetery in rural Hanlontown.

Darleen was born July 2, 1925, in Sheffield, to Ward and Elma (Horstman) Levitt. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Shef-field.

She received her education from the Sheffield Public Schools, graduating in 1942. After high school she attended the University of Iowa and Hamilton Business College.

Darleen was united in marriage to LaVerne Kaasa on August 5, 1945, in Sheffield.

She was confirmed and joined the Grace Lutheran Church in 1954. She served her church in many capacities including the original Altar Guild and as a statistician for twenty-five years for the Iowa District of the American Lutheran Church.

She was a 4-H and scout leader. She was an original member of the Kinney Library Board and played an instrumental role in establishing the Hanlontown Library.

For over five decades Darleen was an avid golfer. She enjoyed reading, knitting, rosemaling, traveling, playing cards, and fishing trips to Minnesota. She enjoyed wintering in the southwest since 1982.

Surviving Darleen is her husband, LaVerne, of Hanlontown; one son and his wife, Stephen and Annette, of Albert Lea, Minn.; two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca and James Langan, of Afton, Minn., and Annette and Kirk Flores, of Wheaton, Ill. Also surviving are eight grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Levitt, of Sheffield.

MASON CITY — Harald F. “Bud” Goplerud, 83, of 904 Sixth St. S.E., died Thursday (Oct. 2, 2003) at the IOOF Home in Mason City.

Bud was born in Osage, Oct. 2, 1920, and died on his 83rd birthday of complications from Parkinson’s Disease. He was the son of Clifford and Ethel Goplerud, and brother to Ann Goplerud Kennedy, Dr. Jane Goplerud and Dr. C.P. Goplerud.

In 1947, he married June Adel Kunz from Wesley. Together they have four children; Dena, of Des Moines, Nann, of Dallas, Texas, H.F. Jr., of Los Angeles, Calif., and Julia of Philadelphia, Pa.

He is also survived by sons-in-law, Dr. Thomas Zisko, Ben Weaver and Dr. Arland Hotchkiss; and six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Leigh, Patrick, Benjamin, Brett and Samuel.

Bud graduated from Osage High School in 1938 and from Grinnell College in 1942 with degrees in chemistry and economics.

During the war years, he worked at Eastman Company in Oakridge, Tenn., supervising the separation of uranium isotopes U-238 from Y-235 through an electro-magnetic process.

In 1947, Bud established Goplerud Lubricants, Inc., in Mason City. He was owner and president for 37 years until his retirement at age 64.

He was enthusiastically involved in many organizations such as the Boy Scout Eagle Board, Jefferson Boy Scout Troop #2, Director of the First National Bank for 27 years, President of the Mason City Country Club and the Euchre & Cycle Club, and a member of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and Elks Lodge.

Bud will be remembered for his sincere interest in people of all ages and backgrounds. He had many devoted friends and often entertained them with his humor and wit.

He loved golf and other outdoor activities. Bud had an avid interest in music, grammar, agriculture and learning about diverse subjects. He will live on in the memory of many.

His family wishes to thank friends, relatives and the staff of the IOOF Home for their kindness and dedication.

LAKE MILLS — Norma L. Alvey, 69, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday (Oct. 1, 2003) at her home in Lake Mills.

Norma Lou Alvey was born on May 5, 1934, in Joice, the daughter of Clarence G. and Lillie A. (Wogen) Slattum.

On July 20, 1952, she was married to Roger G. Hermanson in Joice, to this union three children were born, James, Thomas and Linda.

On October 15, 1983, she was married to Jerry L. Alvey in Lake Mills. Jerry passed away February 4, 2003.

Norma lived in Lake Mills most of her life. She was an active member of the Salem Lutheran Church and en-joyed crafts, golf and playing bridge. She loved her family and spending time with them. She lovingly took it upon herself to make holidays special by establishing family traditions that will be remember-ed by all.

Norma worked at Winne-bago Industries in Forest City for twenty-five years.

She is survived by her loving family, James and his wife, Mary Hermanson, of Mason City, Thomas Hermanson of Fertile,and Linda and her husband, Tim Pomeroy, of Adel; four grandchildren, Samuel, Sarah and Zachery Hermanson, and Nathan Pomeroy; step-children, Mike and his wife, Tracy Alvey, of Barneveld, Wis., and Mark and his wife, Lissa Alvey, of Madison, Wis.; step-grandson, Donovan Alvey; brothers, Cecil and his wife, Barb Slattum, of Richardson, Texas, and Darrel and his wife, Mary Slattum, of Mason City; sisters, Verna and her husband, Floyd Skellenger, of Northwood, and Shirley and her husband, Kenneth Chodur, of Kensett.

Julia passed away on Thursday (Oct. 2, 2003) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Julia was born on Oct. 8, 1914, near Carpenter. She was the oldest child of Jules and Alida Duponcheele.

She married George Lambaere on July 24, 1934, at Visitation Church in Stacyville. They raised their family of four on a farm near St. Ansgar. They retired to St. Ansgar in 1985.

Julia enjoyed farming, traveling, flowers, vacation-ing with family in Alexandria, Minn., cooking for friends, the Democratic party, dancing and helping those in need. She was very active in her church.

Julia became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar in 1997 and Faith Home in 2001.

Julia will be missed by her children, Joanne Wilder (Tom), Mason City, George (Terri) Lambaere, Owatonna, Minn., Kathy McNitt (Russ), Wyoming, Minn., and Mary Lou Kennedy, Osage. Grandchildren include, Matthew and Christopher Wilder, Matthew, Emily and John Lambaere, Craig, Mark and Jeff McNitt and David, John and Steven Kennedy. She has five great-grandchildren: Phillip, Christine, Taylor and Cassie McNitt and Olivia Kennedy. She is also surviv-ed by a sister-in-law, Erma Duponcheele, of Stacyville.

Julia was preceded in death by her husband, George, who passed away in 2000; her parents, Alida and Jules; her sisters, Martha Duponcheele and Laura Vervaecke; and brother, Robert Duponcheele.

He farmed all his life. He spent 15 years in Illinois. In 1956, they moved to Stacy-ville and retired to town in 1977.

George enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, traveling and being with family and friends. He enjoyed gardening and yard work at his home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Irma and Donna; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Margaret Schmitt.

George is survived by his wife, Cordella, of 62 years; a daughter, Karen Marsh and son-in-law, John, of Roseville, Minn.; a brother, Joe, of Mason City; five sisters: Laura Firsching and Theresa Ungaro, of San Pedro, Calif., Gert Retterath, of Austin, Minn., Alma Retterath and Rose Rauen, of Stacyville; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was born Aug. 25, 1914, in Streeter, N.D., the daughter of George and Clara (Zatalaroff) Malamen. In 1916, the family moved to Dawson, N.D., where Mary attended school.

In 1934, she moved to the Minneapolis area and was married to Tony Coloff on Oct. 25, 1936, in Minneapolis.

She then moved to Mason City and was a partner in the family business.

She was married to Chris Petroff on Jan. 25, 1955, in Nashua.

She was married to Edward Feldhus on May 14, 1975, here in Mason City.

Mary worked as a cake decorator for Fareway Bakery for 14 years and worked as a seamstress for Kellum Drapery for three years, retiring in 1978.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.

Mary enjoyed crocheting, knitting and flower gardening.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary Butler and husband, Jon, of Bellevue, Neb., and Klarette Schaefer and husband, Carol, of Rockwell; son, Anthony Coloff and wife, Susan, of Forest City; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sisters: Christine Dady of Minneapolis, Pauline Banwart and husband, Merle, of Dixon, Calif., Celia Abraham and husband, Dale, of Sparks, Nev., Martha Borchers and husband, Rollie, of Hayward, Calif., and Vera Brown and husband, Richard, of Anoka, Minn.; brother, Paul Malamen and wife, Zola, of Elk River, Minn., sisters-in-law, Lorraine Malamen, of Anoka, Minn., and Lucile Feldhus, of Mason City; and special friend, Bill Cory, of Mason City.

Vi was born Nov. 14, 1945, in Mason City, the daughter of William and Rosie (Behm) Pinneke. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1964.

Vi married Cary J. Stricker Dec. 27, 1965, in Mason City.

She worked for Iowa Kemper Insurance for 10 years and for Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan for 15 years.

Vi graduated from the nursing program at North Iowa Area Community College in 1992, and worked for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, currently working in surgery as a circulating nurse. She also served as treasurer of Air Care Inc. since 1976.

Vi was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served as chairperson for the bazaar, was a member of altar guild and taught Sunday school.

She was a United Way volunteer, taught exercise class at the YMCA, enjoyed traveling, flower and vegetable gardening, was a RAGBRAI participant and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Vi is survived by her husband, Cary Stricker, of Mason City; sons, Jeffery Stricker of Johnston, and Bradley Stricker and wife, Jodee, of Forest City; sisters, Ardith Carolus and husband, Merwin, of Mason City, and Marion Fuller and husband, Gene, of Portland, Ore.; brothers, Lawrence Pinneke and wife, Merna, of Garner, and Robert Pinneke and wife, Dee, of St. Ansgar; grandchildren, Shawna and Cody Stricker, of Forest City, and Parker Stricker, of Johnson; father and mother-in-law, Ralph and Jeroldene Stricker, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

MARGARET MAY REASONER


BELMOND - Margaret May Reasoner, 85, a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond, and a native of Rowan, died Friday (Oct. 3, 2003) at the care center in Belmond.

Margaret Emerson, the youngest child of four siblings, was born May 1, 1918, in Rowan, the daughter of Albert and Mabel (Hiams) Emerson.

She grew up in Rowan and attended Rowan Schools graduating from high school in 1936. During high school, she was active in choir, girls basketball, and various church activities.

Following her graduation, she attended Gates Business College in Waterloo.

On Aug. 10, 1941, she was united in marriage to her high school sweeheart, Russell Eugene Reasoner in Arco, Minn. Margaret accompanied Russell for a time in his employment travels as an "Extra Board" for the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railroad. They eventually made their home in Crystal Lake, in 1946, when her husband became permanently employed as a depot agent in Crystal Lake.

Margaret was employed as a secretary to the superintendent of the Crystal Lake Schools and was very active in the community and her church. She had served as President of the Women's Circle and sang in the choir.

In 1960, the family moved to Belmond, where Russell, Margaret, and their daughter, Pamela, made their home.

Margaret was employed with Bill Johnson's Lutheran Brotherhood Agency in Belmond for twelve and a half years before her retirement.

After their retirement, Margaret and her husband enjoyed wintering in Arizona, but also looked forward to returning to Belmond in the spring to see their friends and family.

Margaret had been a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and served as an officer and president in the organization.

She and Russell were both active in the Methodist Church and the Methodist Youth Fellowship programs. She had been involved in various circle and other church activities.

Margaret enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, crafts, and had done some paintings and drawings. Two of her fondest pastimes were flower gardening and Thursday afternoon picnics with her daughter, Pam.

Margaret became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in December of 1994. During her years there, she looked forward to participating in many of the activities including bingo and penny pitch.

Those left to cherish the memory of her life include her daughter, Pamela Rae Kass and her husband, John P., of Apple Valley, Minn.; granddaughter, Christina Nicole Kass, of Eagan, Minn.; several nieces and nephews; two brothers-in-law; and one sister-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell in July, 1995; two sisters, Ruth Holmes and Esther Kercheval; and a brother, Edwin Emerson.

CLEAR LAKE - Sherwood Otto Pitkin, 89, of 22445 Eagle Ave., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Oct. 2, 2003) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel in Clear Lake, and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Sherwood was born Aug. 16, 1914, northeast of Miller, the son of Austin Otto Pitkin and Nellie Sophia (Schwartz) Pitkin.

Sherwood married Marian L. Olson, May 18, 1938, at the Ellington Prairie Church in rural Garner.

In 1938, Sherwood started farming near Burchinal, then in 1943 he moved to a farm near Garner. He farmed near Clear Lake from 1949 until present.

Sherwood enjoyed music and playing the violin with his dad and brothers at their family gatherings. He also would spend time hunting and fishing with his brothers and sharing lots of stories. Sherwood enjoyed reading about geography, science and history and was very knowledgeable about Clear Lake and local history. He loved all the grandchildren visits.

Sherwood was a member of the Fertile Lutheran Church, serving in various positions on the church council. He was a trustee for Grant Township and a member of the Farm Bureau.

Sherwood is survived by two sons, Sherril Pitkin and his wife, Susan, of Corvallis, Ore., and Jim Pitkin of Mason City; a daughter, Donna Ouverson and her husband, Jerry, of Fertile; brother, Ivan Pitkin and his wife, Geraldine, of Clear Lake; sisters-in-law, Elaine Pitkin, of Clear Lake, and Luella Pitkin, of Andrews, Texas; brother-in-law, Arno Olson and his wife, Alma, of Garner; sister-in-law, Bernice Anderson, of Forest City; seven grandchildren: Kristine Pitkin and Brian Pitkin of Corvallis, Ore., Jeff Ouverson and his wife, Dixie, of Manly, Jon Ouverson, of Forest City, Julie Ouverson, of Woodbury, Minn., and Jodie Ouverson and Jamie Ouverson, both of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

HANLONTOWN - Darleen Levitt Kaasa, 78, died Friday (Oct. 3, 2003) at her home in Hanlontown.

Darleen was born July 2, 1925, in Sheffield, to Ward and Elma (Horstman) Levitt. She was baptized in the Meth-odist Church in Sheffield.

She received her education from the Sheffield Public Schools, graduating in 1942. After high school she attended the University of Iowa and Hamilton's Business College.

Darleen was united in marriage to LaVerne Kaasa on August 5, 1945, in Sheffield.

She was confirmed and joined the Grace Lutheran Church in 1954. She served her church in many capacities including the original Altar Guild and as a statistician for twenty-five years for the Iowa District of the American Lutheran Church.

She was a 4-H and scout leader. She was an original member of the Kinney Library Board and played an instrumental role in establishing the Hanlontown Library.

For more than five decades Darleen was an avid golfer. She enjoyed reading, knitting, rosemaling, traveling, playing cards, and fishing trips to Minnesota. She enjoyed wintering in the Southwest since 1982.

Surviving Darleen are her husband, LaVerne, of Hanlontown; one son and his wife, Stephen and Annette, of Albert Lea, Minn.; two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca and James Langan, of Afton, Minn., and Annette and Kirk Flores, of Wheaton, Ill. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Levitt, of Sheffield.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls, with the Rev. Don Preston officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Iowa Falls.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls Chapel, with the family present to receive friends between the hours of 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to North Iowa Hospice or to the First United Methodist Church.
