BUFFALO CENTER — Lillian Mastin, 92, of Buffalo Center, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, with the Rev. David Langer officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

WATERLOO — Sarah E. Sahr, 31, of 521 Hanna Blvd., Waterloo, formerly of New Ulm, Minn., died Thursday (Oct. 2, 2003) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Grace Reformed Church in Waterloo, with the Rev. David VanNetten officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery in New Ulm, Minn. at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Locke Funeral Home, 1519 West Fourth Street, Waterloo.

A memorial fund will be established.

Sarah was born Nov. 22, 1971, in New Ulm, Minn., the daughter of Ernest and Patricia (Forbrook) Ohland. She graduated from Minnesota Valley High School in 1989.

On March 13, 1993, Sarah married Tim Sahr in New Ulm, Minn.

She worked at the Holiday Inn in New Ulm, at Sam’s Club in Waterloo, and recently as a home daycare provider.

Sarah is survived by her husband, Timothy, of Waterloo; three children, Nathan, Cody, and Patricia, at home; her father, Ernest (Chris) Ohland, of Hanska, Minn.; her grandparents, Ernest and Esther Ohland, of New Ulm, Minn.; four sisters: Tammy (Bob) Springer, of Sauk Rapids, Minn., Kimberly (Paul) Luetke, of Keller, Texas, Jill Ohland, of Rochester, Minn., and Rebecca (Tim) Raster, of St. Charles, Mo.; and her brother, Jon (Jill) Ohland, of Westland, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents; and her mother, Patricia, in 1994.

JOHN ‘JACK’ GILBERT DOUGHMAN


DES MOINES — John “Jack” Gilbert Doughman,76, of Des Moines, died Saturday, (Oct. 4, 2003).

Jack was born Aug. 17, 1927, in Bellwood, Pa., to Milton and Helen Doughman.

He loved to spend time with family, travel, play and follow sports, laugh, listen to music, work and meet people.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Rush Doughman; sister, Donna Bailey, of Des Moines; his daughters, Jennifer Doughman, of Des Moines, Deb (Roger) Samson, of Nevada, and Sheri Doughman (Joe Larson), of Minneapolis, Minn.; and his sons, David (Beth) Doughman, of Corvallis, Ore., and Richard Doughman, of Clear Lake. He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Rick and Allison Samson, Peter and Jack Larson, and Jessica and Ariel Doughman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Avenue, Des Moines.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Valley United Methodist Church, 42nd and Ashworth, West Des Moines.

WAYNE FRANCIS GELNER


FOREST CITY — Wayne Francis Gelner, 81, of Forest City, formerly of Mason City, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City. Following the funeral service, his body will be cremated with inurnment at a later date.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.

Wayne Francis Gelner was born on Oct. 10, 1921, in rural Garner, the son of Emil and Catherine (Roach) Gelner. He received his education in the rural school near Forest City.

He was united in marriage to Rosemary Hines on May 3, 1949, in Forest City. She preceded him in death in 1995.

After their marriage they farmed in the Forest City area.

In 1952, they moved to Mason City and Wayne worked for Armour Meat Packing Company, was a boxcar sweeper for several years for Northwestern States Portland Cement Co., and also worked for the Mason City Water Department before going back to Armour Meat Packing Company. After the meat packing company closed down, he laid water pipeline in the Garner area until his retirement. In the 1970s, he owned and operated a rubbish hauling service in Mason City.

He enjoyed gardening, canning, fishing, loved animals especially horses, loved to visit with people and accepted them for who they were; but his great love and enjoyment was his family.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, was a senior volunteer, attended St. James Catholic Church in Forest City and was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Rhea Behrends and her husband, Leon, of Forest City; and a son, Timothy Gelner and his wife, Emma, of Forest City; four grandchildren, Lisa Thompson and her husband, Duane, of Forest City, Marc Behrends and his wife, Amber, of Forest City, Sara Moffett and her husband, Dustin, of Thompson, and Captain Daniel VanEvery and his wife, Heidi, stationed in Tokyo, Japan; six great-grandchildren, Kate and Jake Thompson, Logan and Teddy Wayne Behrends, and Carver and Cooper Moffett; three sisters, Kathleen Sinclair, of Mason City, Pat Rodriguez, of Mason City, and Rosemary Hopkins, of Florida; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosemary in 1995; a daughter, Vicki VanEvery in 1996; and a sister, Bonnie Gelner.

GREENE — Jay Laverne Jewell, 89, of Oceanside, Calif., formerly of Greene, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) at the Tri City Medical Center in Oceanside, Calif.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene with the Rev. Ashok Pafet officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

BUFFALO CENTER — Lillian J. Mastin, 92, of Buffalo Center, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Lillian Jeanette Bosma was born Sept. 26, 1911, on the family farm, rural Buffalo Center, Kossuth County, to Thomas Bosma, Sr., and Florence (Adams) Bosma. In their family of fourteen children, Lillian was their eighth child. She was baptized on Dec. 17, 1934, by Rev. Boomgarden at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center.

In her younger days, she did the daily tasks about the household and farm and caring for her many brothers and sisters. She attended the country school and graduated from the eighth grade. As a young girl she worked as a housekeeper for many area families.

On Feb. 26, 1934, she married William Paul Mastin at the Congregational parsonage. They farmed in the Buffalo Center area and moved into Buffalo Center in 1966.

Lillian served her church very faithfully through the Women’s Fellowship and Missionary Work Group doing much embroidery of towels and was known for her good egg coffee. She especially enjoyed her flocks of chickens, vegetable gardens and many flowers. She and Paul hosted many missionaries in their home and were active supporters of the WyCliffe Association, Oral Roberts Association, and KJLY radio station of Blue Earth, Minn.

Lillian went to her eternal home on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at the age of 92. She resided at the Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center since July 1999.

Lillian is survived by daughters, Delores Loewe and her husband, Orval, of LeCenter, Minn., and Ramona Carlson and her husband, David, of Britt; a son-in-law, Marlyn Hanson, of Buffalo Center; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren: Paul and Diane Hanson, Jacob, Emily and Jessica, of Eden Prairie, Minn.; Dr. Todd and Heidi Hanson, of St. Anthony, Minn.; Dan and Lisa Carlson, Danika, Braden and Keifer, of Britt; Michael and Jane Carlson-Tate and Molly, of New Orleans, La.; Grant and Joan Johanson, Dillon, McCaully and Jayden, of Britt; and Jill McNeese, Harley and Nolan, of Britt. Also survived by sisters: Annabel Oswald, of Frost, Minn., Grace and Harvey Hassebroek, of Buffalo Center, and Bessie Weaver, of Forest City; brother, Alfred “James” and Norma Bosma, of Buffalo Center; brother-in-law, Ralph Mastin, of Blue Earth, Minn.; sister-in-law, Grace Bosma (Thomas Jr.), of Buffalo Center; sister-in- law, Wreatha (Clarence) Bosma, of Mason City; and Mattie Bowers, of Buffalo Center; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lillian joins the following in heaven: her parents, Thomas and Florence Bosma; husband, Paul (July 2002); daughter, Dorothy (November 1996); six brothers: Lewis, Edward, Thomas Jr., Heiko, Bert (infancy), and Clarence; and three sisters: Martha, Esther and Irene.

Lillian will be forever remembered in the hearts of relatives and friends.

MAXINE MAY ORMSBY


VENTURA — Maxine May Ormsby, 86, of 1887 200th St., Ventura, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) at her home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave S., Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating.

Visitation will be held at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a scripture wake service at 7 p.m. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Maxine May Ormsby Memorial Fund.

Maxine was born Feb. 28, 1917, on the family farm south of Ventura, the daughter of Albert and Josephine (Stork) Thronson. She graduated from Ventura High School in 1934. She farmed with her parents and brother.

Maxine married James E. Ormsby on Oct. 22, 1946, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, in Garner. They continued to live on her family farm.

Maxine’s life centered on her family, making sure all their birthdays and holidays were very special. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards and games, quilting, knitting and cooking. She made a special quilt for each of her three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Maxine and Jim celebrated 56 years together.

Maxine was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, in Garner, and the Union Dozen Club.

Maxine is survived by her husband, James E. Ormsby, of Ventura; three daughters: Kathy Meinecke and her husband, Don, of Forest City, Karen Purcell and her husband, Dan, of Clear Lake, and Joan Losey and her husband, Brad, of Clear Lake; and seven grandchildren: Christopher and Jennifer Meinecke, Mike, Matthew, Benjamin and Rachel Purcell, and Courtney Losey.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Charles and Francis Thronson; and one grandchild, Sarah Purcell.

CLEAR LAKE — Wayne Wilcox, 89, of 608 North Shore Drive, Clear Lake, died Monday (Sept. 29, 2003) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake, with Pastor Fanny Hansen and Elders Cliff and Wanda Hagman officiating.

Visitation with the family will be at 10 a.m.and will continue one hour prior to the service.

A private inurnment was held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Community of Christ Church in lieu of flowers.

Wayne was born July 29, 1914, in Council Bluffs, the son of Arthur and Hattie (Sales) Wilcox. He worked with his father for twenty-seven years in the grocer and meat market business there.

He married Nellie Irene Leonard, Aug. 24, 1936, in Logan. They moved to Clear Lake in 1952, where he bought Wilcox Furniture from his brother, Wendell. He operated it until his retirement in 1996, but still enjoyed going down and visiting in the store.

Wayne loved to go fishing and traveling, enjoying the winters they spent in Mission, Texas.

His hobbies included gardening, fishing, polishing his car and most of all, his work at the store.

Wayne was involved with the Clear Lake Business Development Corp., Retail Division, and was a former board member of the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. Wayne was the grand marshal of the Fourth of July parade in 2001.

He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, was involved with IFCA and joined the Clear Lake Noon Lions in 1953. In Lions Club, he served as director in 1969, first, second and third vice-president and president 1973. He was awarded the distinguished Melvin Jones Award. In 1973, he received a citation from the Minnesota Furniture Salesman Club in recognition of his consideration, courtesy and friendliness.

Wayne was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Clear Lake. He was ordained a teacher in 1958, and elder in 1962. He served in the local congregation, and as district bishop.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Nellie Wilcox, of Clear Lake; daughter, Janelle Sargent and her husband, Dale, of Clear Lake; two grandchildren, Jennifer Moore and her husband, Bruce, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Jeff Sargent and his wife, Heather, of American Fork, Utah; and two great-grandchildren, Sarah and Stephen Moore.

Wayne is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Wendell Wilcox and his wife, Lucille.

U.S. GRANT BEVERLY

MASON CITY— U.S. Grant Beverly, 84, of 622 9th St. N.W., died Monday (Oct. 6, 2003) at the IOOF Home.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church, 318 N. Adams, with Rev. Mark Young of the Clear Lake Christian Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, and continue at the church one hour before services.

Grant was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Wise, Va., the son of U.S. Grant and Cynthia (Gilliam) Beverly. Grant served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from 1940 to 1946. He would later retire from the Army Reserves.

Grant married Velma M. Jackson on April 5, 1946, in San Jose, Calif. Grant worked in sales for the automobile tire industry for many years retiring from J & L Tire Company. He was a member of the First Christian Church, VFW, American Legion, UCT, enjoyed hunting and Iowa Hawkeye Football.

Grant is survived by his wife; Velma M. Beverly of Mason City; sons, Thomas R. Beverly and wife, Karen, of Easton, Pa., Paul G. Beverly and wife, Diane, of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Justin, Elizabeth, Andrew, David, Melissa and Brian; sisters, Bertha Insley of Bend, Ore., Martha Hillman of Little Rock, Ark., Cordelia Baker of Johnson City, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews.

Grant was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and five sisters.

MASON CITY — Virginia (Ginny) Ann Halfpap, 80, of Mason City, died Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) at Hospice of North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, with the Rev. Dan Voss officiating. Burial will be at the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.today at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. Please enter through sanctuary doors. Visitation will be held again from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey and one hour prior to services at the church.

Virginia was born March 13, 1923, in Meservey, Iowa, to Frank and Grace (Sloss) Nissen. She received her public education from Meservey High School, her teaching certificate from Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and additional study at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She was an avid basketball player while in high school and a championship archer while at the Iowa Teachers College. Her teaching career spanned seven years, at Dumont, Ackley, and Ventura schools.

Virginia was united in marriage to Richard Halfpap on June 10, 1950, in Meservey. In 1952 they moved to Thornton where they farmed for 44 years. After the passing of her husband in 1996 Ginny moved to Mason City.

Virginia was as avid reader, pianist, and seamstress. A lifelong member of the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, she was actively involved in teaching Sunday school and playing the organ. In addition to her faith, her lifelong passion was her family and friends.

Her family wishes to thank friends, relatives, and the staff at Hospice of North Iowa for their kindness, passion, and consideration.

She is survived by her loving family, Doug and Kayla Halfpap of Mason City, David and Nancy Halfpap of Cedar Rapids, and her cherished grandchildren, Jason Halfpap and his wife, Jen, of West Des Moines, Joshua Halfpap of Guam, Emily Halfpap-Murray and her husband, Brett, of Hutchinson, Kan., Aaron Halfpap of St. Paul, Minn., Colin Halfpap of Mason City, and Emily and Aaron’s mother, Deb Halfpap.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; and brother Richard (Bud) Nissen (1986).

ALLISON — Alfred Heuer, 92, of Allison, died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2003) at Community Nursing Home in Clarksville.

BASSETT — Aili Johnson, 80, a resident of 201 South Main, Bassett, died Monday (Oct. 6, 2003) at her home.

Funeral services for Aili Johnson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Aili Susan Maenpaa Johnson was born Sept. 1, 1923, in Stambaugh, Mich., the daughter of Alex and Hilda (Maki) Maenpaa. She graduated from Stambaugh High School. On May 31, 1947, she married Silas Johnson in Stambaugh. In 1949 they moved to the Charles City area and in the late 1980’s to Bassett. Aili worked at Ray’s Pizza, was a school bus driver, and was the club manager at the V.F.W. for many years. Her favorite activities included quilting, gardening, cooking, canning, and furniture refinishing. Aili treasured her family and the time spent with them was always very special to her.

Living family members include two sons, Michael Johnson of Tennessee, and Gerald (Carol) Johnson of Bassett; a daughter, Diane Takalo of Hillsboro, Ore.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Elsie Plourde of Iron River, Mich.; a brother, Lauri Maenpaa of Florence, Wisc.; and special family members, Brandon Vermillion of Charles City, and Melissa and Austin Vermillion of Cedar Rapids.

Her parents; husband, Silas in 2002; a sister, Laura Maenpaa; and a brother, Melvin Maenpaa, preceded her in death.

OSAGE — Marie E. “Mim” Johnson, 82, of Osage died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2003) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

CEDAR FALLS — Grace Marian (Foster) Peterson was born Nov. 12, 1912, in Ida Grove, the daughter of Joshua Lewis and Cynthia Ellen (Custer) Foster.

She married Curtis “Sam” Peterson May 29, 1938, at Spencer, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1978.

Grace taught elementary school in country schools, at Rembrandt, Iowa and after moving to Cedar Falls in 1966, she substitute taught for the Cedar Falls School District.

Grace died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at the Western Home Communities-Elizabeth Martin Center, Cedar Falls, at the age of 90 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon (John) Longnecker of Bella Vista, Ark., Rev. Mary (Joel Lindemann) Peterson of Coulter, Iowa; six grandchildren, John (Deb) Longnecker, James (Cheri) Longnecker, Joel Longnecker, Joshua (Jill) Longnecker, Sarah (Tim) Williams, and Jeremiah (Allison) Longnecker; 19 great-grandchildren, and one nephew, James (Carol) Dolan of Pismo Beach, Calif.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, Lewis Foster; and two sisters, Laura Opal Foster and Jessie Isabel Broadwell.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home and for an hour before service time at the church Friday.

MASON CITY — Donald J. Sazanovich, 80, of Mason City, died Saturday (Oct. 4, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland of the Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Donald J. Sazanovich was born Sept. 8, 1923, in Mason City, the son of Samuel and Olga (Uglick) Sazanovich. Donald attended school in Mason City and on July 10, 1948, he was united in marriage to Katheleen I. Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church. Donald served in the United States Army during World War II. After his service to his country, Donald worked for Northwestern Portland Cement for 31 years until he retired in 1977.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Mason City American Legion.

He is survived by his niece, Andee Anderson of Mason City, his nephew Emory Anderson and his wife, Teresa, of Mason City as well as many great-nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; his parents; his sisters, Mary Erickson, Arlene Jensen, and Virginia Anderson; and his brother, Steven Sazanovich.

SAVAGE, Minn. — David E. Toft, 68, of Savage, Minnesota died Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) at his home surrounded by his family.

Memorial services will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the St. James Lutheran Church, Burnsville, Minn., with Rev. William Nordmark presiding.

Visitation will be one hour before the service.

David was born Feb. 2, 1935, in Polk County, the son of Iver and Sadie (Evans) Toft.

David married Marjorie Walls Sept. 30, 1956, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. He was a machinist in the tool and dye industry.

David was a gentle, caring, kind man with a positive outlook on life that will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

David is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of 47 years; son, Mike Toft of New Prague; daughter, Julie (Scott) Sieben, Savage; two grandchildren, Nikki and Jenna Sieben; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Delores Fischer.

MASON CITY — Jacqueline “Jackie” Kay White, 54, of 253 19th St. S.E., died Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5, 2003) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Jacqueline Kay White was born Aug. 6, 1949, in Mason City. She was the daughter of John Milton and Lillian Elaine (Spillett) Hoffman. Following high school, Jackie furthered her education toward a nursing degree. She became a registered nurse through Job Corps in Excelsior Springs, Mo. and was employed as a surgical nurse at the University of Kansas Medical Center and later at the Visiting Nurse Association in San Antonio, Texas. Jackie returned to Iowa and received an accounting degree after attending classes at Hamilton College, NIACC and Buena Vista University.

Some of Jackie’s favorite leisure activities and interests included her fascination of tigers, attending educational classes and trivia. Many of her friends lovingly called her “Mom” as she was a very giving person, always assisting others as much as possible.

Jackie will be sadly missed by family and friends who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her two daughters, Natalie Swanson and her husband, Ryan, of Mason City and Karen Starry of Mason City; one brother, Ronald Kavars of Dubuque, and one grandson.
