FORREST LEROY “FROSTY” ROBERTS

FERTILE — Forrest Leroy “Frosty” Roberts, 95, of 211 E. Main, Fertile, died Thursday (Oct. 9, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Church of Christ, 3493 Eagle Ave., in Fertile, with Pastor Curt Gallmeyer and Pastor Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

The family suggests mem-orials to Hospice of North Iowa.

Forrest was immersed in baptism and became a member of the Church of Christ in March 1999.

He was born Sept. 26, 1908, in Colo, Iowa, the only child of Burt Leroy Roberts and Emma (Bartlett) Roberts. When Forrest was 3 months old, his father died at the age of 24, of spinal meningitis.

In 1912, his mother married Orlan Whitmore and in later years they moved to the Fertile area.

Forrest “Frosty” attended the Fertile school and also drove school bus as a student. He was a 1927 graduate of the Fertile High School.

He was united in marriage to Viola Miller on Dec. 20, 1933, in Mason City. To this union were born three children, Wayne Roberts, Donald Roberts and Joanne (Roberts) Zrostlik.

Their first home was on a 40-acre farm east of Pine City, Minn., which they farmed for three years. In 1936, they bought a farm 3 ½ miles south-east of Fertile and moved there March 1, 1937. They farmed there for 30 years.

Forrest “Frosty” also drove semi while still on the farm and for several years after moving to Fertile, he hauled Borden’s ice cream. Frosty was a hard worker and he loved to work.

Forrest is survived by his wife, Viola Roberts, of Fertile; two sons, Wayne Roberts and his wife, Jean, of Clear Lake, and Donald Roberts and his wife, Peggy, of Chico, Calif.; one daughter, Joanne Zrostlik and her husband, Richard, of Shell Rock; eleven grandchildren: Allyn Roberts, Debra and her husband, Jim Scott, Kevin and his wife, Kim Roberts, Air Force Capt. Michael and his wife, Deborah Zrostlik, Rick and his wife, Dr. Julie Zrostlik, Dianne and her husband, David Suntken, Leanne Zrostlik, Steven, Scott, and Ellen Roberts, and Cheryl (Roberts) and husband, Gordon Olson; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd Whitmore and wife, Lena, of Liscomb; two sisters, Ethel Jackson and husband, Ralph, of Garwin, and Mae Vibbard and husband, Jess, of Liscomb; brothers and sisters-in-law, Forrestine Whitmore, of St. Anthony, Corrine Miller, of Clear Lake, Verna Butts, of California, Iva Schuler, of Forest City, Leona Meeks, of Illinois, Glen and Flo Miller, of Texas, Amos and Irene Miller, of Indiana, Orland and Marlys Miller, of South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.

HELEN P. MARTIN


NORTHWOOD — Helen P. Martin, 94, of Northwood, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2003) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation was Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Helen P. Fiala was born Jan. 4, 1909, in Mason City, the daughter of Frank F. and Anastasia (Slavik) Fiala. She attended school in Mason City and on Feb. 23, 1927, Helen was united in marriage to Fred J. Navratil in Plymouth. She later married James Martin on Oct. 4, 1967, in Mason City.

Helen worked for several years at Younkers in the women’s department, and also did some modeling for the store.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, and volunteered for many years at Mercy Hospital and for the American Cancer Society.

Helen enjoyed baking and was famous for her fried chicken and mashed potatoes, as well as her kolache. She never missed a relative or a friend’s birthday and always delivered a cake. Helen also enjoyed gardening vegetables and flowers, sewing, and traveling.

Helen is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughters, Mary Anne Marreel and her husband, Enri, of Chandler, Ariz., and Rose Marie Kruger, of Northwood. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Anne Marreel, of Tempe, Ariz., Rosanne Carlson and her husband, Steve, of Tempe, Ariz., Thomas Marreel and his wife, Julia, of Chandler, Ariz., Laurie Kruger, of Lexington Park, Md., Jerry Navratil, of Charles City, Randy Navratil and his wife, Mary, of Story City, Joleen Bakken and her husband, Erik, of Bettendorf, and Rory “R.T.” Navratil, of Grafton; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Madalene Fiala, of Mason City, and Gladyce Fiala, of Mason City; a daughter-in-law, Ilene Milbrandt, of Grafton; and a treasured friend, Marilyn Korte, of Mason City.

Helen was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; her son, Richard Navratil; her son-in-law, Harvey M. Kruger; and her brothers and sisters: Joseph Fiala, Marie Olsen, Frank F. Fiala, Wesley Fiala, and Merrill “Joe” Fiala.

WAYNE L. COYIER


CLEAR LAKE — Wayne L. Coyier, 81, of 301 N. 10th St., Clear Lake, died Friday (Oct. 10, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake, with Msgr. Robert Hogan officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Military honors will be by the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St, in Clear Lake.

Wayne was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Clear Lake, the son of Guy & Viola (Lundy) Coyier. Wayne was raised in Clear Lake and following high school, he entered the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and following his service re-turned to Clear Lake and married Mary Millard on Oct. 26, 1947, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church, in Garner.

Wayne was the Owner & Operator of Coyier’s Service Station & Wrecker Service in Clear Lake until his retirement in the late 90’s.

Wayne enjoyed watching the Hawkeyes and Twins, and was a member of the Clear Lake VFW.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Mary Coyier, of Clear Lake; a daughter, Julie Schroder and her husband, Rod, of Sibley; two sons, Tom Coyier and his wife, Wendie, of Mason City, and Jack Coyier and his wife, Angie, of Venice, Calif.; seven grandchildren: Matthew Helmers and his wife, Molly, of Ames, Betsy Helmers, of Ankeny, Chad Kickbush and his wife, Angela, of Grundy Center, Shannon Teeling and her husband, Roger, of Mechanicsville, Heather Schroder and Justin Schroder, both of Plattsburg, Mo., and Jon Schroder of California; four great-grandchildren: Addison, Camden, and Caden Kickbush, and Brynn Teeling; and one sister, Vivian Greensweig, of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Gordon Coyier.

GEORGE M. GROSLAND


MASON CITY — George M. Grosland, 81, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Oct. 7, 2003) at his home. The cause of death was a rare disease.

Funeral services for George will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., in Mason City, with the Rev. Paul Finger officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., in Mason City.

George was born Oct. 24, 1921, in rural Northwood, the son of Ole and Clara (Holter) Grosland. He received his education in Brookfield township schools. He was baptized at Bristol Lutheran Church in rural Northwood, and was confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Church in rural Northwood. He worked for many farmers in the area and for International Harvester Company of Northwood as a mechanic.

George joined the Army in 1942 as a member of the International Harvester Unit and got his basic training at Ft. Campbell, Ky. He was assigned to the 134th Unit of the 12th Armored Division, Company A. He saw action in England, France and Germany as a mechanic and tank haul-er.

Following his military ser-vice, he again worked for Inter-national Harvester Company of Mason City until 1955. He then bought a truck and was employed by West Truck Line of Mason City and Bonner Truck Line of Swaledale. He was then an owner-operator and hauled for Leonard and Harvey Boyd Live Stock Companies of Mason City, his last employer was Warren Transport of Waterloo. George then retired in 1982.

He was united in marriage to Della Feldt on March 6, 1948, in Iowa City. They lived in Mason City their entire marriage where they raised their three children. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

George enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling all over the United States, and spent many winters in Harlingen, Texas.

George is survived by his wife, Della; son, Craig D. Grosland, of Clear Lake; daughter, Jane L. Jensen and husband, Bruce, of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Lori J. Grosland, of Hamburg, Germany, Angie J. Grosland, of San Diego, Calif., Jason C. Grosland, of Durham, N.C., and Paul and Sarah Jensen of Omaha, Neb.; sisters, Martha Dahl, of Austin, Minn., and Evelyn Garnas, of Hanlontown; brother, Dr. August J. Grosland and wife, Loret O. Grosland, of Gunnison, Colo.; sister-in-law, Esther Grosland, of Marshfield, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gene in 1991; and five brothers: Louis, Oscar, Elmer, Carl and Adolph Grosland.

MARGARET ANNE STOYLES


SUBLIMITY, ORE. — Margaret (Peg) Anne Stoyles of Sublimity, Ore., died Aug. 21, 2003.

She was born in Mason City on Nov. 14, 1931, Margaret (Peg) Doolittle.

In 1950, she married Robert L. (Bob) Stoyles in Mason City. The Stoyles lived in Iowa City and Athens, Ga., until they moved to Oregon in 1962.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Bob, of Sub- limity, Ore.; her sons, Scott (Linda) Stoyles of Sublimity, Ore., and Steven (Lorri) Stoyles of Puyallup, Wash.; her grandchildren, Brandon and Jaegan Stoyles and Sydnee and Robin Stoyles.

GREENE - Graveside services for J.L. Jewell, 89, of Oceanside, Calif., and formerly of Greene and Waverly, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery with Ashok Patet of the United Methodist Church in Greene officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Tack Barnett Post 268 American Legion of Greene.

Jay Laverne Jewell was born the son of Jay and Lura (Emery) Jewell in Kansas City, Mo., on Jan. 18, 1914, and died Sunday (Oct. 5, 2003) at the Tri City Medical Center in Oceanside. His death followed surgery for a fractured elbow he suffered in a fall outside his home on Thursday, Sept. 25th.

The family moved to Rockford, Iowa, when he was about 3 years old, and later lived on several farms in the Greene area. J.L. graduated from Greene High School in 1933 and then worked at the Buchholz & Dralle Department Store until enrolling at the lowa State Teachers College. He graduated in 1940 with a B.S. degree in business education. He then taught in the Tabor High School for two and one-half years

On May 16, 1942, he was united in marriage to Harriet Shook of Greene in Marys-vilIe, Mo. On Jan. 18, 1943, he entered the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., for officer's training. He received his commission as ensign in May of 1943 and was ordered to Florida, where he was in charge of the beach patrol stations at Hallandale and then Daytona Beach.

He was then transferred to Alameda, Calif., and assigned to troop ship USS C.H. Muir which was commissioned in Portland, Ore., in March of 1945, where he served as ship's secretary. He spent the next several months in the South Pacific. They returned the first servicemen that were discharged from the Pacific area into New York City on VJ Day.

Following his discharge as a lieutenant junior grade, he returned to teaching, spending a year in the Centerville (Iowa) High School and Junior College. Giving up teaching, he went to work for the Keightley & Peterson CPA firm in Sioux City until July of 1949, when he accepted the position of chief accountant at the Schield Bantam Co. in Waverly. Retiring after 35 years from what had become the Koehning Co., he and Harriet moved to their present home in Oceanside, Calif.

While in Waverly, J.L. was an active participant in many organizations, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served on several committees. He also served as the president of the Waverly-Shell Rock School Board, was president of the Waverly Rotary Club, treasurer of the Chamber of Commerce, was a member of the Waverly Hospital Board and served a term as president of the National Construction Mach-inery Credit Association.

He enjoyed several sports, especially playing golf. He and Harriett traveled all over the U.S. and Europe, participating in the International Golfing Fellowship of Rotary, and the similar U.S. group of Rotarians as they played annually at different venues. He was especially proud of having won the Rotary North-east Iowa district golf tournament to qualify for his first IGFR tournament at St. Andrews, Scotland, in 1974.

He believed in exercise and kept a log for over five years for the miles he had ridden his bike and of the miles he had jogged or walked.

J.L. is survived by his wife, Harriett, of Oceanside, Calif.; his daughters, Julianne Oak of Poway, Calif., Debra Roschke and son-in-law, John Roschke, of Shorewood, Minn.; three grandchildren, Adam and Lauren Roschke of Shorewood, Minn., and Kristin Oak Ferren and her husband, David, of San Marcos, Calif.; Kristin and David's twins, his great-grand-children, Jason and Jessica. Surviving also are a brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Ethel Jewell of Greene, and several nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janelle Karen; his parents, and his sister, Alma Boom.

GARNER - Harold P. Juhl, 80, of Garner, died Friday (Oct. 10, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, West Campus, Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner with the Rev. Robert Bronson officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Harold Peter Juhl, the son of Peter and Ethel (Erickson) Juhl, was born July 25, 1923, on a farm northwest of Garner. At an early age, he moved with his family to Miller, S.D. In 1934, the family returned to the Garner area, where Harold attended country school.

Following his schooling, he farmed with his father near Miller, Iowa. On Feb. 17, 1951, he married Elnora Wrede at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garner. They farm-ed north of Garner until re-tiring in 1988. In November of 2001, Harold moved to the Concord Care Center in Garner. He enjoyed visiting with people.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he had served as a deacon, financial secretary and trustee. He also had serv-ed on the board of the Farm-er's Co-op Society in Garner.

Harold is survived by his wife, Elnora, of Garner; a brother, Ralph Juhl and wife, Emma, of Garner; sisters, Anna Mae Beers and husband, Warren, of Ventura, Calif., Fern Branstad and husband, Hubert, of St. James, Minn., Lorraine Quayle and husband, Robert, of Forest City; a sister-in-law, Edna Boehnke, of Edina, Minn.; a brother-in-law, George Wrede of Chesapeake, Va., and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lawrence Juhl; sisters-in-law, Ruby Juhl Jante and Gloria Wrede, and a brother-in-law, George Boehnke.

ALIDA DORENKAMP


BELMOND - Alida Dorenkamp, 95, of Belmond and formerly of Meservey and Klemme, passed away Friday (Oct. 10, 2003) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Funeral services for Alida Dorenkamp will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Meservey with Pastor Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation for Alida Dorenkamp will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane South in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Alida, the daughter of Henry and Hannah Frey Suntken, was born Oct. 24, 1907, in Wisner Township in Frank-lin County. She grew up in Franklin County, where she attended Wisner Township No. 5 Country School. She worked in Alexander for a couple of years.

Alida was united in marriage to Emil Dorenkamp on Dec. 18, 1930, at Alexander. The couple farmed one year in Franklin County and several years in Wright County. Emil and Alida purchased their own farm north of Meservey in 1942.

Emil died on Oct. 15, 1987. Alida then remained on the farm until ill health forced her to move to the Klemme Apartments in January of 1989. In April of 1991, she moved to the McBurney Apartments in Belmond. Alida entered the Belmond Health Care Center in August of 2003.

Alida is remembered for cooking Sunday dinners for her family. She loved gardening and flowers. She adored her grandchildren.

Alida was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey.

She is survived by her daughter, Mavis Nannenga of Thornton; four grandchildren, Marjorie Tannahill and husband, Ron, of Klemme, Dorothy DeSloover and husband, Robert, of Hampton, Linda Groesbeck and husband, Brad, of Garner, Randall Nannenga and wife, Deanna, of Klemme; seven great-grand-children, Crystal, Jason, Ashley, Amy, Ethan, Bethany and Anastasia; two step-great-grandchildren, Chad and Penny; a sister, Grace Kuhlers of Belmond, and a sister-in-law, Esther Bohning of Belmond.

Alida is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Emil; a son-in-law, Clarence Nannenga; a grandson, David; a great-granddaughter, April; a sister, Johana, and two brothers, Onno and Bert.

ST. ANSGAR - Eugene Schulze, 79, of St. Ansgar, died Saturday (Oct. 11, 2003) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.
