ELAINE SCHMITT

CHARLES CITY - Elaine Schmitt, 76, of 501 Ninth Ave., Charles City, died Monday (Feb. 24, 2003) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

Funeral services for Elaine Schmitt will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City, with Pastor Gayle Wilcox officiating. Burial will be in West Saint Charles Cemetery, rural Charles City.

Friends may call from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.

Elaine Emily Fluhrer Schmitt was born Oct. 31, 1926, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of Earl and Eva (Werk) Fluhrer. When she was five year old, the family moved to Charles City where she graduated from Charles City High School in 1944.

Elaine then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and received her teaching certificate. Later she would attend Wartburg College where she received her degree in elementary education.

On Dec. 27, 1949, she was united in marriage to Roger Schmitt at the West Saint Charles United Methodist Church. During her career Elaine taught at Maynard, Charles City, and for 21 years at Greene.

After retirement, they lived in Arizona and Arkansas. The retirement years would find her working with home health, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

During her life, she was a member of West Saint Charles United Methodist, holding various positions in the church, and later would become a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Iowa State Teachers Association, and the Greene Teachers Association.

Attending Bible studies, sewing and knitting were some Elaine's favorite pastimes.

Living family members include her husband, Roger Schmitt, of Charles City; a son, Douglas Schmitt, of Independence, Kan.; and a favorite cousin, Nile K. Smith, of Neola.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

IRENE A. RONEY

SWALEDALE - Irene A. Roney, 97, of 8371 150th St., died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Private funeral services were held at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale.

Family suggests memorials be directed to the Irene A. Roney Memorial Fund.

Irene was born June 30, 1905, in Burnsville, Minn., the daughter of William and Jennie (DeJordt) Benzing. She graduated from Dunkerton High School 1924 and attended the University of Iowa and Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1927. She also had a first grade-teaching certificate.

Irene taught school in Swaledale, Manly and in the later years in Thornton, Clear Lake and at Harding School in Mason City.

She belonged to Church circles, Women's Garden Club Thornton, Pleasant Valley Cemetery Society, bridge clubs and Senior Citizen's Center in Swaledale. She enjoyed reading, handwork and ceramics.

Irene is survived by her daughter, LaRue Meier and her husband, Richard, of Swaledale; son, Loren Jay Roney, of Swaledale; six grandchildren, Jay Alan Roney and his wife, Dawn, of Clear Lake, Scott Roney, of Mason City, Shirley Ann Roney, of Cedar Falls, Terry C. Roney and his wife, Jeniffer, of Plymouth, Julie Roney, of Elgin, Minn., and Beverly Roney, of Elgin, Minn.; five great-grandchildren, Paige, Summer, Spencer, Michael and Katlynn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Grant in 1985; and one infant brother, Ralph.

GORDON WILHELM AASGAARD

LAKE MILLS - Gordon Wilhelm Aasgaard, 96, of Lake Mills, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) at the Albert Lea Medical Center in Albert Lea, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will take place at Salem Lutheran Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Gordon Wilhelm Aasgaard, born April 2, 1906, was the son of Martin A. and Ragna (Mykleby) Aasgaard. He lived his entire life in Lake Mills, being baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills and graduated from Lake Mills High School in the Class of 1924. He played quarterback on the first football team at Lake Mills and went to Waldorf College where he also played football, toured with the band and small groups, and graduated in 1926.

On May 20, 1927, he married Opal Monson at Salem Lutheran Church.

After college he assisted his father who was the local postmaster and they were partners in the newspaper business, The Lake Mills Graphic. Besides the newspaper, he was also in the printing and publishing business, operating the Graphic Publishing Company until 1985.

In the late 1930s and early '40s he was a partner in the Owatonna Photo News which was the first offset newspaper in the Upper Midwest. Together with his wife, Opal, they were in the retail business in Lake Mills where they owned Milady's Style Shop and they were partners in starting similar retail businesses in Eagle Grove, Mason City, Ida Grove and Mankato.

Throughout his career in the business world, he was a willing and capable mentor to many individuals. He was always willing to share his knowledge and resources with others who were starting a business.

Gordon was a charter member of the Lions Club in Lake Mills and also a past president of both the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was a founding member of the Lake Mills Development Group. For approximately 25 years he was secretary of the Waldorf College Board.

The University of Iowa chapter of Sigma Delta Chi made him an honorary member. He was a member and past president of the Iowa Press Association. In 1961 he received the Master Editor Award for the State of Iowa. In 1984 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Waldorf College.

He was a kind and patient Christian man and demonstrated that many times to his family, his friends and his community. He loved music and enjoyed playing the piano. He was also an avid sports fan. It was always very evident that he took pride in his hometown, Lake Mills.

Gordon is survived by one daughter, Betty Aasgaard, of Burnsville, Minn.: two granddaughters, Carolyn Ladd and her husband, Jonathan Weber, of Hamden, Conn. and Roselyn Weber and her husband, Philip Weber; and two great-grandchildren, Britta and Noah Weber, all of Austin, Texas; his sister-in-law, Helen Aasgaard; and his nephew, Rick Aasgaard and his wife, Karen, of Lake Mills; niece, Wendy Aasgaard Johnson, of Apple Valley, Minn.; and another nephew, Mike Jensen and his wife, Gloria, of Osseo, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, in 1996; his parents; two brothers, Marlin and John; and one sister, Olga Jensen.

JAMES W. HAENSCH

MASON CITY - James W. Haensch, 81, of 804 Ninth St. N.E., died Monday (Feb. 24, 2003) at home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

James was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Des Moines, the son of Rudolph and Stella (Uischner) Haensch. James attended school in Mason City graduating from high school in 1939.

He worked at Ford Hopkins Drugstore and Jacob E. Decker and Sons. James entered the service in February of 1941 and served for four and one half years with Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 133 Infantry, 34th Division. He served at Camp Claborn, La., Ireland, England, Africa, Italy, and Fort Sill, Okla. James received the Purple Heart after being wounded in Italy.

He was united in marriage to Patricia Whalen on June 27, 1945, in Mason City. He worked for a short time with Standard Oil Company and for 39 and one half years with Interstate Power Company, retiring in 1985.

He enjoyed playing baseball and fast-pitch softball and after retiring became an avid golfer.

James was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church where he volunteered in collection accounting and was also a member of the VFW.

James is survived by his wife, Patricia, of Mason City; daughter, Susan Daskalos and husband, George, of Mason City; three grandchildren, John Daskalos of Mason City, Penelope Daskalos of Palm Harbor, Fla., Georgianna Rasmussen and husband, Christopher; and great-grandson, George, of Wake Forest, N.C.; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Whalen and wife, Marion, of Mason City, and Gerald Dehnert, of Birmingham, Ala.

James was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary Jill; and infant granddaughter, Angela Daskalos.

NORMA GAE MADERA

MASON CITY - Norma Gae Madera, 88, of Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 21, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Wayside Chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Doug Anderson officiating. A graveside service will be held the same day at 12:45 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. NE, Mason City and for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City.

Norma was born June 27, 1914, at her family farm near Plymouth, a daughter of Arthur "Art" and Una Gay (Hartong) Madera. She was raised on the farm near her grandparents and other relatives.

Norma graduated from Plymouth High School in 1932 and later attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Her father died in 1934, after which, Norma and her mother went to live with her mother's parents, Seward and Katherine Hartong, in Nora Springs. They purchased a new home in Mason City in 1952, where Norma lived until moving to the Heritage Care Center in Mason City in 2002.

She was employed for a short time at a utility company in Charles City. After that she went to work for the next 35 years at the United Home Bank and Trust Company. She started there as a bookkeeper and later worked in the safe deposit and accounting departments.

Nora enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends and neighbors.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a most willing volunteer for several organizations.

Norma is survived by her cousins, Glenn Hartong and his wife, Gwen, of Columbia, Md. and Betty Newlee and her husband, Arthur, of Ventura, Calif.; and several other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and numerous other family members.

EDWIN H. PRUESSNER

MASON CITY - Edwin H. Pruessner, 78, of Mason City died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Private family funeral services will be held Thursday with the Rev. Doug Anderson of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Public visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or the First United Methodist Church.

Edwin was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Rockford, the son of Henry and Anne (Linderkamp) Pruessner. He attended school in Rockford. Following his schooling Edwin served his country in World War II.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Ewald on June 26, 1947, at the Rockford Methodist Church in Rockford.

Edwin and Beverly shared many wonderful years together, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 26, 1997.

Edwin was an avid golfer and loved spending time woodworking. He was dearly loved by his family and will be sadly missed.

Those left to cherish Edwin's memory are a son, Terry Pruessner and wife, Carol, of Stafford, Va.; daughter, Janis Platts and husband, Joe, of Mason City; son, Kevin Pruessner and wife, Julia Scannell, of Napa, Calif.; grandchildren, Andrew, Travis and Dana Pruessner, of Stafford, Va., and Justin, Jessica and Janelle, of Mason City.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beverly; and one sister, Esther Bailey.

CHARLES 'NORMAN' NYE

FERTILE - Charles "Norman" Nye, 85, of Fertile, died Monday (Feb. 24, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Pilot Knob Lutheran Church in rural Forest City with the Rev. Bob Snitzer officiating. Burial will be at Brush Point Cemetery in rural Fertile.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Charles "Norman" Nye was born in Fertile Township, Worth County, on Nov. 12, 1917, the son of Vern and Aimee (McEnelly) Nye. He received his education in Fertile schools.

On July 18, 1940, he married on Loretta Rasmussen in Iowa City. Norman served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. The couple made Fertile their home throughout their married lives.

Norman was a gifted carpenter and could do just about anything he set his mind to. He was a mechanic at Eymann's for many years, worked at Forrester and did service work for Carl Larsen. He did all types of carpentry work, from building and installing cupboards, to building houses to crafting large-scale replicas of World War II aircraft. For Norman, doing the impossible "just took a little longer."

He enjoyed fishing and lapidary. He was a member of Pilot Knob Lutheran Church.

Norman is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Stram and her husband, Sheldon Kingley, of Burnsville, Minn.; a granddaughter and her husband, Molly and Michael Boylan, of Chanhassen, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Courtney and Connor; a brother, Max Nye and his wife, Florence, of Fertile; three nephews, Roger Nye and wife, Johanna, Jerry Nye and Brian Nye and wife, Cynthia. Also surviving are four step-grandchildren and their spouses, Lenny and Diane, David and Becky, Brian and Lori and Shelly and Ben; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ardis Anderson, of Forest City and her children and families.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Loretta; and an infant sister, Doris.

SHIRLEY ‘NANNY’ F. WRENCH

NORTHWOOD — Shirley “Nanny” F. Wrench, 72, of Northwood, died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church, rural Glenville, Minn. (Highway 105 East to S56, 4 miles north on S56), with the Rev. Dan Baker and the Rev. Robert Kruger officiating. Burial will be in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, and one hour prior to service time Saturday at the church.

Shirley “Nanny” F. Wrench was born on Nov. 26, 1930, in David, Iowa, near Little Cedar, the daughter of George and Ruth (Herron) Wilson. She attended and received her education in the Mitchell and Osage school systems.

She was united in marriage to Donald Lewis Wrench on Feb. 22, 1947, at the Lutheran Church in Osage. He preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 1985. After their marriage together, they farmed side by side their entire life in rural St. Ansgar. After Don’s death she moved to her daughter and son-in-law’s home in rural Northwood. Nanny also was a waitress for the Sportsman Lounge in St. Ansgar.

She enjoyed taking care of livestock, knitting, fishing, traveling extensively throughout the United States and internationally, loved animals, cribbage, enjoyed a good bargain at flea markets and garage sales, and enjoyed making doll clothes for her great-grandchildren, but her great love and enjoyment was being with family and friends.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Sandy Trainer and her husband, Jim, of Northwood; special friend, Allen Kruger, of Morrisville, Mo.; three grandchildren, Jill Trainer, Jolene Cotter and her husband, Marty, and Jake Trainer, all of Northwood; five great-grandchildren, Courtney and Kati Davis, Jordan, Brady and Tegan Cotter, all of Northwood; three sisters, Dora “Dode” Eastman and her husband, Charles, of McIntire, Alda “Swede” Toye, of Rock Island, Ill., and JoAnn “Jodi” Edwards and her husband, George, of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; two brothers, Robert “Huck” Wilson and his wife, Sylvia, of St. Ansgar, and Donald Wilson and his wife, Janet, of Osage; as well as several nieces and nephews, other relatives and a multitude of friends.

Besides her husband, Donald, she was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gary Lee Wrench, and a brother, Richard “Dick” Wilson.

JOHN HERBERT KOPECKY

SIOUX CITY — John Herbert Kopecky, 92, of Sioux City, died Friday (Jan. 17, 2003) at a Sioux City Hospital.

Mr. Kopecky was born Nov. 15, 1910, inMason City to John and Hazel (Dutro) Kopecky and graduated fromMason City High School in 1929. He always returned to his 1929 class reunion.

After high school, he played in area dance bands and in a dance band at the GreenMill.

He married Evelyn Allison of Manly on Oct. 5, 1933, in Mason City.

He graduated from Morningside College in 1955 with a BME degree. He taught high school and junior high school for 25 years in smaller towns around Sioux City.

Mr. Kopecky performed 15 years with the National Champion Monahan Post Band of Sioux City. He also played many years in the Karl King Band of Fort Dodge and the Eddie Skeets Dance Band. He was a music contest judge over the years for high school and junior high contests.

He belonged to the Eagles, Masonic Scottish Rites and was a lifetime member of the Musician’s Union. He was a Shriner and played in the band.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Kopecky, of Lindstrom, Minn.; a brother, Cy Kopecky, of Gainesville, Fla.; two sisters, Rosalyn and husband, Donnin Ames, of Fremont, Neb., and Millie and husband, Frank Thomsen, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and JohnKopecky; a son, John D. Kopecky; one brother, Richard, and two sisters, Pauline and Antoinette.

NANCY L. RASSMAN

FOREST CITY — Nancy L. Rassman, 44, of Forest City died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Nancy Lynn Rassman was born March 8, 1958, in Riceville, the daughter of Stanley L. and Kathleen D. (Murphy) Goodbrand. She received her education in Riceville and graduated from Riceville High School in 1976.

She married Dennis Rassman on June 7, 1980, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Nancy operated a day care in her home for many years, caring for her own children as well as others.

She worked at Bill’s Red Owl for several years and in 1995 began working as a secretary at MBT Too in Forest City. She continued there for these last seven years, eventually working as a commercial agricultural loan processor.

Nancy enjoyed her physical fitness classes at the YMCA, and liked to garden and attend classic auto shows with her husband.

She loved riding their Harley and treasured time spent with family and friends.

She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School. She served as the honorary chairman for the Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” in Forest City last summer.

She was an outgoing, caring person who gave unselfishly of herself and her time.

For 12 years, Nancy fought a courageous battle with cancer and was an inspiration to those in similar circumstances.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis, of Forest City; son, Shane, of Cedar Falls; and daughter, Sheena, of Forest City. TITONKA — George Dale Higgins died on Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at Hanock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley, with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Titonka, with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. prayer service.

George Dale Higgins was born on Dec. 25, 1919 at Germania, Iowa to George and Irene Koppen Higgins. Dale graduated from Titonka High School in 1937.

He served in the United States Air Force in World War II as an airplane mechanic. He repaired the B29 airplanes that were shot up over Germany.

On March 14, 1945, Dale was married to Thelma Miller in Bossier City, La. The couple farmed three miles west of Titonka following Dale’s discharge in 1945 until his retirement. In 1987, they moved into Titonka.

Dale drove motorhomes from the factory to the dealer for Winnebago Industries in the 1970’s.

Dale was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woden and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wesley after Sacred Heart closed.

He was also a member of American Legion Breen Post #465.

Dale enjoyed woodworking and being a “Winter Texan” in McAllen, Texas. The warm weather and friends from all over the Midwest and Canada kept him returning for many years.

Survivors include his wife Thelma (Toni) of Titonka; children, Betty Cox and husband, Curtis, of Trenton, Mo., Tom Higgins and wife, Amy, of Titonka, and Linda Higgins and special friend, Brian Bushay of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Dan Scott, Cindi Schooley, Jeff Scott, Christy Huggans, Luann Higgins and Heather Hooper; eight great-grandchildren, Allison, Angela and Joe Scott, Grant Schooley, Phillip and Patrick Scott and Olivia and Eli Huggans; one brother, Duane Higgins and wife, Arlis of Titonka; and sister, Darlene Hagen and husband, Wayne, of Titonka.

MARSHALL HOMER BRINTON

BELMOND — Marshall Homer Brinton, 85, of Belmond, died Wednesday (Feb. 19, 2003) at his home in Queen Creek, Ariz.

Homer was born in Ellsworth, Iowa on April 6, 1917. He was educated in the

Ellsworth School system and graduated in 1935.

He married Anna Mae Hill, daughter of Morgan Andrew Hill and Anna Georgina Satre Hill, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Stanhope, Iowa on Oct. 22, 1941.

Homer farmed at Stanhope and Fertile, Iowa from 1941-1963.

He purchased the Belmond Hotel in 1963 until the tornado destroyed it in 1966.

From 1966 to 1998, he drove Winnebago motor homes for Morgan Drive Away in Forest City, Iowa, and for Lifetime in Mason City, Iowa.

Homer and Ann lived in Apache Junction and Queen Creek, Arizona for the past 14 years during the winter months. They reside in Belmond, Iowa during the remainder of the year.

Homer was a trustee of the Fertile Lutheran Church, a member of the Elks Lodge and a Commissioner for the soil conservation district.

He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed fishing throughout Iowa, Minnesota and Canada.

His greatest treasures in life were his numerous friends and his family who cherished him and will deeply miss his humor and wit.

Homer was preceded in death by his two grandchildren, Emily Morgan Knoll and Benjamin Scott Meints; his brothers, Clare Daniel, William Scott and Wayne Edward Brinton; his mother, Mabelle Emma Lindebak Brinton and his father, Scott Marshall Brinton; his grandparents, Marshall Homer Brinton and Mary Jane Scott Brinton and Edward O. Lindebak and Emma Osterus Lindbak.

EDWARD ALLEN JOHNSON

DESOTA, Texas —Edward Allen Johnson, 52, of Dallas, Texas, formerly of Rockwell, died Saturday (Feb. 15, 2003) at the Charleston Methodist Hospital, Desoto, Texas.

Private family memorial services have been held. Ed had been a long-time resident of Dallas. Edward was born March 3, 1950, the son of Harland and Mildred (Patterson) Johnson in Mason City. He attended and graduated from Rockwell-Swaledale High School, North Iowa Area Community College, and Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo.

A commercial photographer, he was employed by Chastain and Company of Dallas and later started his own freelance business called Ed Johnson Enterprises.

Ed traveled the world with camera in hand. He was an accomplished cook and loved to hunt and party with friends.

Those thankful for having shared in Ed’s life include his sister, Jerriann Ries and her husband, Bruce, of Rockwell; one nephew, Brent Blanchard and his wife, Thereasa, and their children, Chadd and Nickolle of Rockwell; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and two lifelong friends, Vikki Fischer of Thornton and Catherine Chastain of Dallas.

Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Harland and Mildred Johnson, and one nephew, Blake Blanchard.

He will be laid to rest next to his parents and nephew at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Rockwell.

GERALD R. MCCOID

MASON CITY— Gerald R. McCoid, formerly of Mason City, passed away on Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) at his home at Plymouth, Ind.

He was born on May 21, 1943, at the North Iowa General Hospital in Mason City, the son of Raymond and Eleanor (Bitker) McCoid. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1961 and from the University of Iowa Medical School in Iowa City in 1968.

He went on to his internship and his residency in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a doctor of otolaryngology. He practiced his specialty in Virginia, Minn., for 15 years before returning to the Navy.

He was married to Ms. Nancy Morris in South Bend, Ind., in 1966. They were the parents of Matthew R., Mark R. and Rebbeca L. McCoid.

He was very active in Boy Scouting, attaining his God and Country Award, Order of the Arrow and his Eagle Scout Award. He was a Master Councilor of the Mason City Chapter of DeMolay.

He loved to do woodworking make clocks and other beautiful wooden things.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; two sons, Matthew Ray, of New Orleans, La., Mark Ray, his wife, Lori and their two children, Haley and Hunter, of Melbourne, Fla.; and one daughter, Rebbeca and her husband, Daan Witkamp and their two children, Kiersten and Caitlyn, of Mishawaka, Ind.; his parents, Raymond and Eleanor McCoid, of Mason City; a brother, James and his wife, Sue, of North Glen, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

WICHITA, Kan. — Pauline Petersen Hook died Feb. 21, 2003, at her home.

Pauline was born Feb. 1, 1927, at Rockwell to Nels and Ida Petersen. She graduated from Rockwell High School in 1945.

She was married to Jack Hook on May 10, 1950.

Herluf was born May 31, 1913, in rural Thornton, the son of Chris N. Ytzen and Mary Bertelsen. He was raised in the Thornton- Coulter area. He attended Coulter schools.

On May 10, 1942, Herluf was united in marriage to Gladys Nielsen in Des Moines.

Herluf was a farmer. He was an active member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church, Coulter, and served on many leadership committees and was a Sunday school teacher. Herluf was a volunteer with Red Cross and hospice and enjoyed music.

He is survived by his daughter, Christine Ytzen, Pleasant Hill, Iowa; a son, Gerald and his wife, Dorothy Ytzen, Carmel, Ind.; a grandson, Allen Ytzen, Carmel, Ind.; and a granddaughter, Laura Ytzen, Carmel, Ind.

FOREST CITY — Nancy L. Rassman, 44, of Forest City died Tuesday (Feb. 25, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Nancy Lynn Rassman was born March 8, 1958, in Riceville, the daughter of Stanley L. and Kathleen D. (Murphy) Goodbrand. She received her education in Riceville and graduated from Riceville High School in 1976.

She married Dennis Rassman on June 7, 1980, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Nancy operated a day care in her home for many years, caring for her own children as well as others.

She worked at Bill’s Red Owl for several years and in 1995 began working as a secretary at MBT Too in Forest City. She continued there for these last seven years, eventually working as a commercial agricultural loan processor.

Nancy enjoyed her physical fitness classes at the YMCA, and liked to garden and attend classic auto shows with her husband.

She loved riding their Harley and treasured time spent with family and friends.

She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School. She served as the honorary chairman for the Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life” in Forest City last summer.

She was an outgoing, caring person who gave unselfishly of herself and her time.

For 12 years, Nancy fought a courageous battle with cancer and was an inspiration to those in similar circumstances.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis, of Forest City; son, Shane, of Cedar Falls; and daughter, Sheena, of Forest City. ARLENE ROSE REINDL

ALBERT LEA, Minn. — A Mass of Christian burial for Arlene Rose Reindl will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Theodore’s Catholic Church 315 E. Clark St. Albert Lea, Minn, with the Rev. Robert Schneider, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Theodore’s Cemetery.

Arlene died Wednesday (Feb. 26, 2003) at United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn. at the age of 79.

Arlene was born May 26, 1923, on a farm north of Manly, Iowa, the youngest of four children born to Mandius and Bertha (Anderson) Forland. She was a 1941 graduate of Manly High School.

On Oct. 24, 1941, she was united in marriage to Ivan John Reindl at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly. Shortly after their marriage, Arlene and Ivan moved to Albert Lea where they made their home on East Seventh Street for 58 years.

Arlene was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ivan, in April of 1999.

Since Ivan’s passing, she had resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Ilene and Jim Sukalski on their farm south of Blue Earth.

She was an active member of St. Theodore’s Catholic Church, Council of Catholic Women Guild # 3.

She was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and a member of the Albert Lea Moose Lodge Auxiliary.

Arlene worked during World War II as a punch press operator for the American Gas Company and made many friends and acquaintences as an Avon sales representative.

Arlene greatly enjoyed her time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
