MEGAN CHRISTINE MCDERMOTT

BELMOND-Megan Christine McDermott, 20, died Friday (Feb. 14, 2003) at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School Gymnasium in Corwith with the Rev. Steven Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Grace Baptist Church in Corwith.

Megan was born on Aug. 11, 1982, at Belmond to James and Deanna (Ahrens) McDermott. She received most of her early education in Clear Lake, graduating from the Clear Lake High School in the Class of 2000. In high school, Megan was a five time District Champion on the swim team, an All State and All Academic 1st Team in softball, was on the track team and a member of the National Honor Society. She was also a U.S. Army Student Athlete and a State of Iowa Scholar. After high school, Megan enrolled at Drake University in Des Moines. She was a Drake Presidential Scholar, a member of Phi Delta Chi National Pharmacy Fraternity and a Drake Merit Scholar. Megan was a third year pharmacy student.

While living in Clear Lake, Megan was a lifeguard at Clear Lake and at Opportunity Village. She was a pharmacy tech at C.V.S. Pharmacies in Woonsocket, R.I., and more recently a pharmacy tech at the Hy-Vee Store in Des Moines. Megan was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Corwith. She enjoyed talking on her cell phone, visits from her brother, being a student at Drake and fighting for what was right.

Megan died at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines from injuries received in an auto accident which occurred on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2003, in Des Moines.

Megan is survived by her parents, James and Deana McDermott; her brother, James McDermott III, all of Corwith. Also surviving are her maternal grandmother, Martha Ahrens, Manchester, Iowa; her paternal grandfather, James McDermott and wife, Mary, Greenville, R.I. and Warwick, R.I. and her maternal great-grandmother, Eva Marie McNeil, Providence, R.I. She is also survived by her aunts and uncles, Sharon and Walter Salisbury, Greenville, R.I., Cindy and William McCarthy, Glouester, R.I., Patty and Kevin Ricci, Greenville, R.I., Mike and Janice McDermott, West Warwick, R.I., Dennis and Sandy Ahrens, Dundee, Iowa, Ellen and Larry Brecher, Peoria, Ariz., and many great-aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Barbara A. McDermott and maternal grandfather, Lavern Ahrens.

MILFORD SOLOMONSON

LAKE MILLS - Milford Solomonson, 92, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2003) at the Amery Regional Medical Center in Amery, Wisc.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills with the Rev. Randy Baldwin officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday only.

Milford Solomonson was born Aug. 12, 1910, in rural Scarville, Winnebago County. He was the youngest child of Solomonson Solomonson and Serene (Sarah) Martinson Twito. He attended a rural elementary school and helped his family on the farm.

On June 1, 1940, he was united in marriage with Helen Askeland at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. Two daughters, Marilyn and Lois were born to this marriage. Milford farmed near Lake Mills until he retired. At that time they moved into Lake Mills. Helen passed away in 1992. They were active members at North Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Scarville.

Milford was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Canada. He also enjoyed playing pool and looked forward to his daily game with his "buddies."

In November 1997, Milford moved to Evergreen Village in Amery, Wis. to be near his daughter Marilyn and her family. Due to failing health he entered golden Age Manor in Amery and has been a resident there for three years. He died at the Amery Regional Midical Center on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003.

He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Marilyn (Norman) Osero of Amery; Lois (Eugene) Osero of Wausau, Wisc., five grandsons, David, Steven (Erin) and James of Amery, Andrew (Theresa) of Glendale, Ariz., Ronald of Green Bay, Wisc.; two great-granddaughters, Danielle and Ashley Osero of Glendale, Ariz., Also surviving are two sisters, Cathryn Gullixson of Bloomington, Minn., and Evelyn Matson of Amery; a sister-in-law, Opal Solomonson, Lake Mills'; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three half-brothers, Helmer Twito, Emlet Twito, Archie Twito; and half-sister Isabelle Twito Greene; his sister, Carol Solomonson Palm; and brother, John Solomonson.

GARY D. COLE

GRAFTON-Gary D. Cole, 60, died Thursday (Feb. 13, 2003) at his home at 2421 350th St., Plymouth.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson and intern, Irmgard Ellingson officiating. Burial will take place at the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Gary was born Sept. 21, 1942, to Floyd and Lydia (Borchardt) Cole and grew up on their family's farm near the towns of Plymouth and Grafton. He attended elementary school in Plymouth and graduated from Grafton High School in 1960. He attended U.S. Trade Schools in Kansas City, Mo., after graduating high school. He joined and served in the Iowa Army National Guard during the early 1960s.

He was joined in marriage to Charlotte Marie Borchert on Jan. 1, 1966, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton where they were both baptized and confirmed. They lived in Mason City before moving to his family's farm and their current home. During the beginning years of Gary's farming career, he worked for David Manufacturing, American Crystal Sugar, and Massey Ferguson in Mason City.

Gary served on the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Board, St. Ansgar Community School Board, and the North Iowa Co-op Elevator Board of Directors.

Gary's life was filled with passions. He had a passion for agriculture and the importance of the interdependence of each sector of agriculture and farmer's contribution to our society. He had a great sense of national pride and patriotism and had a thirst for knowledge about current events at the world, national and local levels. He enjoyed activities such as NHRA drag races and shooting sports, but his greatest passion was fishing.

Gary loved being with his family and friends. Whether playing cards, doing activities or going on trips he always shared his practical jokes and good-natured mischief.

A close friend shared that, "Gary had the unique ability to make acquaintances feel like friends and friends feel like family."

Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Charlotte; son, Michael Cole and his wife, Nicole, and their sons, Mitchell and Ryan of Grafton; his daughter, Michelle Hill and her husband, Andy, and their daughter, Hannah, of Manly; his brother, Eugene Cole and his wife, Mary Pat, of Mason City; brother-in-law Stan Borchert and his wife, Kathy, of Marshfield, Wisc.; sister-in-law, Linda Patterson and her husband, Virgil, of St. Ansgar; nieces, Candis (Cole) Feldt, Renae (Cole) Weghorst, Mackenzie Patterson, and Kyli Borchert; nephews, Kevin Cole, Nathan Borchert, Adam Borchert, Tom Gilies, and Corey Patterson; extended family and uncounted friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law; two sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.

EMMA B. WRAY

CLARION-Emma B. Wray, age 79, of Clarion, passed away on Thursday (February 13, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Clarion with Rev, Curt Miner officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Willim Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street in Clarion, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Emma Belle (LaBarr) Wray was born to Ralph and Cecil (Norton) LaBarr on December 25, 1923, in rural Galt, Iowa. She received her education in Galt, graduating with the class of 1941. Emma loved sports, and to this day she is known as the basketball star of Gait High School.

On August 15, 1942, Emma was united in marriage with Howard Wray in Tallahassee, Fla. During that time, Howard was serving his country in the United States Air Force, and shortly after their wedding, he was stationed overseas to serve during the European war.

In 1943, Emma went to work for the FBI in Washington, D.C., where she held many positions doing clerical and administrative tasks. Upon Howard's return to the states in 1945, the couple settled in Clarion to raise a family.

Emma was an active member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, where she participated in Women's Fellowship, was on the Search Committee, and always helped with the annual church bazaar. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and frequently volunteered at Gift and Thrift in Clarion. During her free time, Emma loved to take one-day outings with her sisters and friends. In addition, she enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her vegetable garden and flowerbeds, and chasing her cat, Muffin.

Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Leanne White and her husband, David, of Plano, Texas, and Nancy Krein and her husband, Richard, of Forest City; two grandsons, Bill and Daniel, both of Mason City; two great grandchildren, Brendan and Emaray; and two sisters, Lorene Maier of Eagle Grove, and Irene Poulson of Clarion.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard, in 1955; a sister, Phyllis, and a brother, Ralph Jr.

LOIS I. DELP

MANLY - Lois I. Delp, 91, of 219 E. Elmore in Manly died Friday (Feb. 14, 2003) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St. in Manly with Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be at the Sheller Cemetery in rural Grundy County with Rev. Kenneth Davidson officiating at the committal service.

Visitation will be one hour before the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be given to the Lois I. Delp Memorial Fund.

Lois was born July 13, 1911, at Invester Community in Grundy County to Rev. Clarence and Alma (Tucker) Schrock. She was a member of the Hansell, Iowa, Girls State Basketball Championship team. She graduated from Hansell High School in 1932.

Lois was united in marriage to Ralph E. Delp on March 24, 1935, by her father, in Greene, Iowa.

Her home and family were very important to her and she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She had a very keen sense of humor. Lois made great pies, was an avid Hawkeye fan, and loved working with her flowers.

She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Greene. She attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly and belonged to the Friendship Circle.

Lois is survived by a son, Richard Delp and his wife, Janice, of Manly; two daughters, Mary Patterson and her husband, Donald, of Pryor, Okla., and Dorothy Davidson and her husband, Kenneth, of Welda, Kan.; ten grandchildren, Barry Delp of Davenport, Dennis Delp of Greene, Nancy Peterman of Lytton, Rachel Delp of Wall Lake, Karrie Rathbone of Emporia, Kansas, Kevin Davidson of Cullison, Kansas, Joanna Smith of Welda, Kansas, Jennifer Bhatti of Emporia, Kansas, Lois Davidson of Welda, Kansas, and David Patterson, Owasso, Okla.; 15 great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Faye Streitwiser and her husband, Warren, of Owasso, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; one grandson; three brothers; and one sister.

MARIE CATHERINE SULLIVAN

ELMA-Marie Catherine Sullivan, 85, of Elma, died Thursday (Feb. 13, 2003) in New Hampton of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma with the Rev. John Hemann celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Elma.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton where there will be a 4 p.m. Rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

HOWARD B. BOND

MASON CITY-Howard B. Bond, 84, of Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 13, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Howard B. Bond Memorial Fund.

DARRELL L. JOHNSON

ALGONA-Darrell L. Johnson, 74, of Algona, formerly of Bode, died Saturday (Feb. 15, 2003) at the Kossuth County Hospital in Algona.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Algona.

A special Elks Club Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Wilson Funeral Home in Algona

Burial will take place in Audubon, Iowa at a later date.

LARRY DEVRIES

CHARLES CITY- Larry DeVries, 57, a resident of 402 4th Avenue, Charles City, died Thursday, (February 13, 2003) at his home.

Funeral services for Larry DeVries will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City. The Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Larry Allen DeVries was born October 25, 1945, at Charles City, the son of Hommo "Onnie" and Minnie (Rand) DeVries. He grew up in the Elma area and attended Crestwood High School. On April 18, 1964, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Conway at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma.

Larry worked at BC Hydrotile in Nashua for twenty-five years, Featherlite Trailers, and David Manufacturing. He could be found spending time playing pool, working in his garage, gambling and watching NASCAR racing.

However, his passion was stock car racing. During his 30 years of racing he built his own racecars, and was well-known and respected in north Iowa for his talents and abilities. In 1987 he won the Season Championship at the I 35 Speedway in Mason City, in 1995 he was all time season points champion at the Fayette County Speedway, and also at the same time received the fans' Most Popular Driver Award. Larry also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Living family members include his wife, Cheryl of Charles City; four children, Rick DeVries of Floyd, David (Roni) DeVries of Clear Lake, Brian (Gina) DeVries of Charles City, and Minessa (Randy) Wiltse of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Kyle DeVries, Kayla Byers, Ashley Wiltse, Shane Wiltse, Tyler Wiltse, Tanner Putney, and Brianne DeVries; a brother Darrell (Connie) DeVries of Charles City; and three sisters, Lorilee (Marv) Ackerson of Bassett, Wanda (Dennis) Meyer of Elma, and twin sister Lynda (Bob) Chambers of Elma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Darlys Jacobson; and nephew, David Lee DeVries.

ALGONA- Pearl McEnroe, 96, of Algona, died Friday (Feb. 14, 2003) at Good Samartian in Algona.

RONALD W. BRAGER

VENTURA- Ronald W. Brager, 76, of Ventura died Friday (Feb. 14, 2003) at his home.

His funeral will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Miller with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ronald Willard Brager, the son of Willard C. and Velma Odessa (Hollingsworth) Brager, was born October 1, 1926, on a farm north of Ventura where he lived for the past 76 years. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1944. Ron enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1953. On November 18, 1951, he married LaVonne Steenhard at Ellington Prairie Lutheran Church near Miller. They farmed north of Ventura until Ron retired from farming at the age of 62. Ron was also employed by Cheney Plumbing and Heating in Clear Lake for ten years. He enjoyed square dancing, crossword puzzles, farming, old tractors, woodworking and playing board games with the kids.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Miller where he had served in many capacities over the years.

Ron is survived by his wife, LaVonne, of Ventura; two children, Debbie Nelson and her husband, Terry, of Eagan, Minn., and Rahn Brager and his wife, Cris, of Ventura; grandchildren, Staci Andrea and her husband, Dustin, of Rosemount, Minn., Luke Brager of Ventura, Angie Nelson of Eagan, Minn., Misty Brager of Clear Lake, Jake Brager of Ventura and Josh Brager of Ventura; two great grandchildren, Skylar and Paige Andrea; three brothers and two sisters, Marvin Brager and his wife, Adelaide, of Ventura, Kenneth Brager and his wife, Althea, of Forest City, Darlene Wells and her husband, Derwood, of Clear Lake, Venita Statser and her husband, Jack, of Bettendorf and Larry Brager of LeClaire, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

MARIAN HOLMES

ROCKWELL-Marian Holmes, 83, died Wednesday (February 12, 2003) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. S.E., Mason City.

Marian was born April 19, 1919, the daughter of Louis and Grace (Griffith) Holmes in Mason City. Marian enjoyed taking care of people and did so nearly all her life. As her father grew older, Marian stayed by his side to make sure he was comfortable.

Marian lead a rather simple life but very much enjoyed listening to Mel Tillis, cooking, and spending time with her nieces and nephews. She looked forward to her family coming to stay with her so she could take care of them. The little things made Marian happy especially celebrating holidays and birthdays. She always baked a cake for the birthday celebration. Marian loved the company of her dogs.

Marian is survived by one brother, Frank Holmes, three nieces, Roxanne Holmes of Rockwell, Roberta Holmes of Minneapolis, Minn., Rhonda Dean of Stewart, Iowa; two nephews, Rick Holmes of Cresco, and Randy Holmes of Apple Valley, Iowa; and six great-nieces and nephews.

Ms. Holmes was preceded in death by her parents, and her supporting brother of many years, Robert Holmes.

HOWARD B. BOND

MASON CITY - Howard B. Bond, 84, of Mason City died Thursday (February 13, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Kathy Graves, Director of Spiritual Care at Hospice of North Iowa officiating.

Howard was born December 9, 1917, in Mason City, the son of Lewis J. Bond and Anna Marie Sorenson. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1936. Howard joined the Air Corps and served his country in World War II as a navigator and gunner on a B-25 bomber. He worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company in Mason City.

Howard enjoyed his cats, boating and traveling. He was dearly loved and will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.

PAUL EDWARD FITZGERALD

MASON CITY - Paul Edward Fitzgerald, Jr., 73, of 27 26th Street S.W., Mason City, died Sunday (February 16, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 5th Street S.E., Mason City, with the Reverend Chris Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association of Mason City.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Tuesday with a public scripture wake service at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Ed Fitzgerald was born on January 8, 1930, in Rockwell, Iowa, the son of Paul Edward Fitzgerald, Sr., and Elizabeth (Gaffney) Ed attended and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1947. After completing his schooling, he worked as a carpenter with his dad in the Mason City area. He was inducted into the United States Air force in 1951, serving during the Korean conflict until his honorable discharge in 1954.

He was united in marriage to Connie Swadinsky on August 9, 1952, in Hanna City, Ill. After his honorable discharge he returned to Mason City and worked as a union carpenter until his retirement.

He was later united in marriage to Martha "Marty" Fike on June 1, 1981, in Rochester, Minnesota. She preceded him in death on April 28, 1997.

Ed was an avid sports fan, enjoyed bowling, golf, was instrumental in the implementation of the Knights of Columbus youth baseball program and he enjoyed visiting with his many friends, but his great love and enjoyment was watching his grandchildren play sports.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mason City, Rockwell American Legion, and the local carpenters union local chapter 106 and 1313.

Left to cherish his memory are his children; Paul Fitzgerald and his wife, Dianne, of Rogers, Minn., Patti Petersen and her husband, Gary, of Rockwell, Pam Osgood and her husband Dan of Mason City, Mike Fitzgerald of Chicago, Ill,, and Jim Fitzgerald of Des Moines; grandchildren, Matt Fitzgerald, Caroline Monson and Robert Monson, Robert Fitzgerald, Sean Fitzgerald, Katie Fitzgerald, Grant Petersen, Kari Petersen, Billy Petersen, Katie Osgood, Ryan Osgood, Shannon Fitzgerald, Patrick Fitzgerald, Megan Fitzgerald and Molly Fitzgerald; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Fitzgerald, Leif Monson, and Victoria "Tori" Monson; a sister, Mary Lenore Gogg of Charles City; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Powell of Mason City, and Delores Fike and Sharon Jefferies and her husband Harvey both of Rudd; several nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and many friends.

MEGAN CHRISTINE MCDERMOTT

CORWITH - Megan Christine McDermott, 20, died Friday (Feb. 14, 2003) at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne High School Gymnasium in Corwith with the Rev. Steven Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Corwith Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Grace Baptist Church in Corwith.

Megan was born on Aug. 11, 1982, at Belmond to James and Deanna (Ahrens) McDermott. She received most of her early education in Clear Lake, graduating from the Clear Lake High School in the Class of 2000. In high school, Megan was a five time District Champion on the swim team, an All State and All Academic 1st Team in softball, was on the track team and a member of the National Honor Society. She was also a U.S. Army Student Athlete and a State of Iowa Scholar. After high school, Megan enrolled at Drake University in Des Moines. She was a Drake Presidential Scholar, a member of Phi Delta Chi National Pharmacy Fraternity and a Drake Merit Scholar. Megan was a third year pharmacy student.

While living in Clear Lake, Megan was a lifeguard at Clear Lake and at Opportunity Village. She was a pharmacy tech at C.V.S. Pharmacies in Woonsocket, R.I., and more recently a pharmacy tech at the Hy-Vee Store in Des Moines. Megan was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Corwith. She enjoyed talking on her cell phone, visits from her brother, being a student at Drake and fighting for what was right.

Megan died at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines from injuries received in an auto accident which occurred on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2003, in Des Moines.

Megan is survived by her parents, James and Deanna McDermott; her brother, James McDermott III, all of Corwith. Also surviving are her maternal grandmother, Martha Ahrens, Manchester, Iowa; her paternal grandfather, James McDermott and wife, Mary, Greenville, R.I. and Warwick, R.I. and her maternal great-grandmother, Eva Marie McNeil, Providence, R.I. MAYNARD ARLO RAKE


 

OSAGE - Maynard Arlo Rake, 88, of Osage, died Saturday (Feb. 15, 2003) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.


 

Maynard was born Jan. 20, 1915, in Rake, Iowa, the son of Elias and Carrie (Matson) Rake. He was baptized and confirmed at Liberty Lutheran Church in Rake. He was educated in Rake Community Schools.


 

His father passed away when Maynard was five years old. The family moved from the farm to the town of Rake, in the spring of 1921. On Dec. 23, 1937, Maynard married Virgie (Schuchart) Rake in Osage. They lived in the Buffalo Center-Rake and Zearing areas, where Maynard managed a lumberyard until March of 1948, when they moved to the Morton Schuchart family farm near Osage. They continued to live on the farm until 1977, when they built a new home and moved to Osage. They wintered in Mesa, Ariz., for 30 years. Maynard was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a charter member of the Sons of Norway in Osage, served on the Little Cedar School Board, Mitchell County Extension Board and the Farm Bureau Board of Directors.


 

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour before services Wednesday at the church.


 

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Virgie, on Feb. 14, 1992; a brother, Leonard, and a sister, Edna.

CLARION-Emma B. Wray, age 79, of Clarion, passed away on Thursday (Feb. 13, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.


 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Clarion with the Rev. Curt Miner officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.


 

Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Willim Funeral Home, 602 N. Main St. in Clarion, and will continue one hour prior to services today at the church.


 

Emma Belle (LaBarr) Wray was born to Ralph and Cecil (Norton) LaBarr on Dec. 25, 1923, in rural Galt, Iowa. She received her education in Galt, graduating with the class of 1941. Emma loved sports, and to this day she is known as the basketball star of Gait High School.


 

On Aug. 15, 1942, Emma was united in marriage with Howard Wray in Tallahassee, Fla. During that time, Howard was serving his country in the United States Air Force, and shortly after their wedding, he was stationed overseas to serve during the European war.


 

In 1943, Emma went to work for the FBI in Washington, D.C., where she held many positions doing clerical and administrative tasks. Upon Howard's return to the states in 1945, the couple settled in Clarion to raise a family.


 

Emma was an active member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, where she participated in Women's Fellowship, was on the Search Committee, and always helped with the annual church bazaar. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and frequently volunteered at Gift and Thrift in Clarion.


 

During her free time, Emma loved to take one-day outings with her sisters and friends. In addition, she enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her vegetable garden and flowerbeds, and chasing her cat, Muffin.


 

Those left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Leanne White and her husband, David, of Plano, Texas, and Nancy Krein and her husband, Richard, of Forest City; two grandsons, Bill and Daniel, both of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Brendan and Emaray; and two sisters, Lorene Maier, of Eagle Grove, and Irene Poulson of Clarion.


 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard, in 1995; a sister, Phyllis, and a brother, Ralph Jr.

CHARLES CITY - William "Bill" Schwartz, 78, of 1134 Shadow Ave., Charles City, died Friday (Feb. 14, 2003) at his residence.


 

Memorial services for Bill Schwartz will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St. in Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Final disposition will be at a later date.


 

There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Hauser Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday.


 

William Charles Schwartz was born April 23, 1924, at Fulton, Ill., the son of Fredrick and Mildred (Gusse) Schwartz. He graduated from the Clinton High School. In 1954 Bill was married to Fern French. They were married for 24 years.


 

In 1955, Bill purchased a farm north of Charles City. He retired from farming in 1986 and continued living there until his death.


 

Bill's interests included fishing, and playing pool and cards. His grandchildren were very important to Bill and brought special joy to him.


 

Living family members include his daughter, Claudia (Rick) Montgomery, of Plainfield; two granddaughters, Wendy (Doug) Ross, and Angela King; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Donald (Roberta) Schwartz and Wesley (Emma) Schwartz, both of Clinton, and Fredrick Schwartz, of Bryant; and five sisters, Dorothy Peters, of Arkansas, Eunice (Ed) Violett, of DeWitt, Helen Darr, of Front Royal, Va., Edna Mae (Tom) Montague, of DeWitt, and Alma (Sam) Funaro of Des Moines.

MASON CITY - Michael W. Thomas, 86, of The Manor, passed away on Sunday (Feb. 16, 2003) at his home.


 

His funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.


 

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., where a Third Degree Knights of Columbus Rosary will also be held at 7 p.m.

Mike was born April 5, 1916 at the home of his parents, James and Mary Ann (Miljavac) Thomas, in St. Joseph, Mo. The family moved to Kansas City, Kan., where Mike attended school.


 

He began working at Armour and Co. at the early age of 16 and continued his employment with the same company for 48 years. Mike was a foreman and later a department supervisor, who had to transfer to many different areas for the company, including Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and Minnesota.


 

Mike was united in marriage to Lorraine Young on May 26, 1956, at the Christ the King Church in Lexington, Ky. She died of cancer on April 11, 1974.


 

Mike was residing in St. Paul, Minn. when he retired in 1982, but he continued living there until 2000, when he moved to Mason City.


 

He was a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.


 

Mike is survived by three brothers, James Thomas,of Kansas City, Kan., Walter Thomas, of Dearborn, Mich., and Joseph Thomas and his wife, Margaret, of Mason City; three sisters, Rose Dawson, of Mason City, Dorothy Wass, of Joplin, Mo., and Betty Hermanson and her husband, Melvin, of San Diego, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Colleen Thomas, of Mason City. He is also survived by the three grandchildren of his wife, Lorraine; as well as 19 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews.


 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Kasinac and Helen Hermanson; one brother, John Thomas; two sisters-in-law, Helen Thomas and Winifred Thomas; three brothers-in-law, Lester Dawson, Frank Kasinac, and Harold Wass; and one nephew, James Thomas.

MASON CITY - Harold E. Anderson, 73, of Mason City died Sunday (Feb. 16, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Harold was born Aug. 19, 1929, in Downers Grove, Ill., the son of Ernest and Elsie (Statzer) Anderson. He attended school in Mason City and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he received numerous medals.


 

Harold worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company for more than 40 years, retiring in 1984. He married Loretta Jansen on Aug. 19, 1950 in Mason City.


 

Harold was a member of the VFW, DAV and the Mason City Bowling Association Hall of Fame.


 

He enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandsons.


 

Harold is survived by his wife, Loretta Anderson, of Mason City; children, Marianne Barclay and husband, Tad, of Canyon Lake, Calif., Weege Anderson, of Mason City, and Sue Nuehring and husband, Roger, of Mason City; grandchildren, Reed and Adam Barclay, and Richard A. Charlene was born Jan. 21, 1920, at Elwood, the daughter of Charles M. and Amanda (Henecke) Starr. Charlene was a graduate of Oxford Junction High School in Oxford Junction.


 

Charlene married Elwood Otto Bunge on Jan. 21, 1939, in Oxford Junction.


 

Charlene entered Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake on Oct. 29, 2002, having spent the last 12 years in Weslaco, Texas.

MASON CITY - Richard Dale Davis, 70, of Mason City died Sunday (Feb. 16, 2003) at his home. There will be no funeral service or visitation.


 

Richard was born on Dec. 18, 1932, the son of Donald and Marian (Jones) Davis in Mason City. He was a 1951 graduate of Mason City High School and took several college courses through the Air Force.


 

Richard joined the Air Force and served his country in the Korean War. He and his family have lived in Mason City, California, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Washington returning to Mason City in September of 2002.


 

Richard enjoyed attending the Class of 1951 Reunions, he also loved to play solitaire and was an unpublished author. Most of all Richard loved his dog Rocky and enjoyed the time they spent together.


 

Those left to cherish Richard's memory are one daughter, Teresa Highsmith of Clayton, Calif.; two sons, Richard "Rick" Davis, of Wilsonville, Ore. and Greg Davis, of Bothell, Wash.; two brothers, Leslie Davis and wife, Barb, of Coeur De Alene, Idaho, and Donald "Bob" Davis and wife, Nita, of Texarkana, Ark.; four sisters, Betty Smith and husband, Dick, of Indianola, Carol Wallace, of Indianola, Sharon Sharp and husband, Bill, of Des Moines, and Lois Brown and husband, Dallas, of Rockwell; seven grandchildren, Alex, Colin, Justine, Ian, Bethany, Ryan and Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.


 

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marilyn; one grandson, Jordan; one brother-in-law, Larry Wallace; and one daughter-in-law, Terri Jaton Davis; and his dog, Rocky.

MAGDALIN HAAS


 

ST. ANSGAR - Magdalin Haas, 96, of St. Ansgar, died Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center, after a bout with the flu.


 

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. Ansgar Catholic Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Mark Reasoner and the Rev. Scott Fleischer (Magdalin's great-nephew) officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Ansgar Cemetery in St. Ansgar.


 

Magdalin Haas, P.R.N. was born Jan. 17, 1907, in Szulok, Hungary, the daughter, of Stephen and Christine (Krainer) Haas. The family emigrated to America around 1915, entering Ellis Island, N.Y. Stephen arriving first, followed a while later by Christine and the two daughters, Mary Magdalena (Magdalin) and Julie. The family resided in Chicago, then moved on to St. Ansgar, where Stephen started a blacksmith business in the present Allstate Insurance building on the Main Street (Fourth Street) of St. Ansgar. They lived above the business.


 

After graduation from St. Ansgar High School, Magdalin returned to Chicago and completed her nurses training at Washington Boulevard Hospital (now known as "Rush") in 1929. After graduation she worked at several Chicago area hospitals, including West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. While in Oak Park, she lived several years with her brother-in-law's sister, Hertha Fleischer (also formerly of St. Ansgar).


 

Magdalin took on special nursing assignments as a 24-hour live-in nurse for seriously ill patients. She frequently would drop what she was doing and go wherever she was needed, many times caring for young children. To this day, several people across the country, adoringly call her their "Aunt Magdalin"!


 

While Julie's husband, Al Fleischer, served in World War II, Magdalin left Chicago to aid Julie who was pregnant with Phil and living alone in Wells, Minn. Later she returned to St. Ansgar to be with her ailing mother, Christine, in her final days. Upon retiring from active nursing in Chicago in 1957 due to health reasons, she lived in her Mom's house in St. Ansgar.


 

She became active in the St. Ansgar Catholic Church, and helped start the Senior Saints Citizen Center in St. Ansgar.


 

She enjoyed taking care of her neighbor's children, gardening and going on long walks around town. She also enjoyed helping the elderly by getting their mail and food. She walked uptown daily in all weather (including below zero) refusing every offer of a ride. She spent her final seven years at the Good Samaritan Center where all the staff loved her pleasant cheerful personality.


 

Magdalin was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Julie; and her brother-in-law, Al.


 

She is survived by her nephews, Ron Fleischer, of Morro Beach, Calif. and Phil Fleischer, of St. Ansgar.


 

A special memorial service for Magdalin will also be held on Aug. 8, 2003 in St. Ansgar.

Allison was born Dec. 7, 1976, in Mason City, the daughter of Bryan and Susan (Berry) Stone. She graduated from North Central Manly High School in 1995 and during her senior year was awarded the Arion Award in music.

Allison married Robert King on June 13, 1998, in Mason City. She was currently working as a receptionist for Mercy Family Care in Clear Lake.

While in high school, Allison was a cheerleader and member of the Show Choir at North Central Manly.

She enjoyed singing, dancing and collecting Mickey Mouse items.

She was a wonderful mother, beautiful wife and a caring sister and will be missed by all.

ERTHL ODELLA BAKKEN

NORTHWOOD - Erthl Odella Bakken, 72, of Northwood, died Saturday (Feb. 15, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the First Lutheran Church, 309 N. Ninth St. in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S. in Northwood, and one hour prior to time of services on Friday at the church.

The family of Erthl Odella Bakken has requested that Memorial Contributions be made to the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, or to ones favorite charity in her memory.

Erthl Odella Bakken was born May 20, 1930, in Belmond, the daughter of Sylvan O. and Sadie (Nerem) Bakken. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on Oct. 7, 1945, by Rev. O.H. Hove in the Northwood Lutheran Church.

She attended and received her education in the Northwood Public School system, graduating from Northwood High School in 1948.

After completing her schooling, Erthl worked as a secretary for L.A. Baken attorney-at-law in Northwood prior to working with the telephone company as a operator and later commercial clerk for 15 years in Northwood, prior to transferring to the Northwestern Bell Telephone office in Mason City until her early retirement in 1980 after 32 years of service.

Erthl enjoyed reading, music, working find a word puzzles, and traveling. She along with her sister, Iola, traveled extensively in the U.S., and made trips to Scandinavian countries, Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Hungry, Czech Republic and cruised the Caribbean Islands and Hawaii.

She also enjoyed visiting with people and eating out especially at the monthly gathering of the Birthday Club. Erthl also enjoyed doing volunteer work.

She was an active member of First Lutheran Church and was very active in the Martha Circle in Northwood. She was also a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America, life member and active officer for 51 years with the Smith-Perry American Legion Auxiliary Post 144, and Ladies Auxiliary of "Our Buddies" VFW Post #6779 of Northwood".

Left to cherish her memory is a sister, Iola Bakken of Northwood; a nephew, Jan T. Gerber and wife, Candace, of Omaha, Neb.; several cousins; a special companion dog, Twinkles; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Thor, Susan and Marie Nerem; paternal grandparents, Henry and Ida (Glassel) Bakken; parents, Sylvan and Sadie Bakken; a sister, Shyrlamae T. Gerber; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

MASON CITY - Matthew N. Ward, 43, of 515 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City died Saturday (Feb. 15, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Matt was born March 15, 1959, in Mason City to Clarence Junior Ward and Jo Ann (Kunzman) Treanor. He attended Mason City schools until he was 17, when he enlisted in the Army. After his discharge he came back to Mason City where he worked as a self-employed roofing and siding contractor.

Matt enjoyed all outdoor recreation, especially hunting, fishing, boating, and snowmobiling. He played as hard as he worked.

Matt is survived by his mother, Jo Ann Treanor; and stepfather, Richard; a very special friend, Ellen Page; three children, Sean Ward, of Cedar Rapids, and Matthew and Angel Ward, of Charles City; one stepdaughter, Judy, also of Charles City; one sister, Melody Harty and her husband, Tim, of Nora Springs; two brothers, Gary Ward, of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Terry Ward, of Mason City; four nephews, Randy, Frank, Shane, and Brandon Ward; one niece, Stacy Harty; and a good friend, John Dodge, of Mason City.

CHARLES CITY -Kathryn Holmseth, 87, a resident of South Cedar Terrace, Charles City, died Tuesday (Feb. 18, 2003), at her daughter's home, rural Charles City.

Kathryn Marie Holmseth was born March 6, 1915, at Blue Earth, Minn., the daughter of William and Annetta (Evans) Clark. She was educated in the rural schools and graduated from Blue Earth High School.

On April 16, 1932, she was united in marriage to John E. Holmseth. In 1948 they moved to Floyd. After retirement they wintered 13 years in Rio Hondo, Texas. John died on July 28, 1992. In 1993 Kathryn moved to Charles City.

She was a member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church and was very active in various aspects of the church.

Her love for books was her greatest pastime, as she was an avid reader. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing cards with her many friends.

Time spent with her family was very important and she enjoyed traveling to their various homes sharing their lives together.

Living family members include four daughters, Carolyn Walkup, of State Center, Joyce (Keith) Drahn, of Monona, Kay (Ronald) Shelton, of Janesville, Wis., and Ruthanne (Rodney) Ellis, of Charles City; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; three sisters, Helen (Harold) Kliendl, of Blue Earth, Minn., Thelma Bromeland, of Frost, Minn., and Jean Rose of Winona, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Lorene Clark.

Dolores was united in marriage to Don Sims on Sept. 14, 1952, in Ames, Iowa. She taught for seven years in Sheffield, Woodward and Luther, Iowa and in 1976 became the C.F.O of Ace Credit Union.

Dolores enjoyed spending time reading, golfing but most of all being with her family. She was dearly loved by all those who knew her and will be sadly missed.

MUSCATINE - DeLos G. "Rick" Rickey, 86, of 31 Coventry Lane No. 8, and formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Feb. 19, 2003) at Lutheran Homes.

Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, 1931 Houser St. in Muscatine, with Dr. Hal Green of the Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Pallbearers will be Greg Johnston, Doug Johnston, Nicholas Ratcliff, Al Church, John Lorber and Steve Ziegenhorn. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Rickey was born on June 24, 1916, in Eau Claire, Wis., the son of Charlie and Amanda Nygard Rickey. He married Evelyn Mariella Thomas on Feb. 14, 1955 in Mason City.

Mr. Rickey had lived all of his life in Mason City, moving to Muscatine in December of 2002.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Mason City. He was a lifelong member of the Elks in Mason City, and the Iowa Auto Dealers Association.

He was a car dealer with the Triumph MG and Jaguar Franchise and also the Toyota Franchise.

He loved cars, dancing, music and his family.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Rickey of Muscatine; one daughter, Louise Munday and husband, Ron, of Muscatine; one son, Steven Rickey and his wife, Gail, of Kent, Wash.; four grandchildren, Grant Munday, of Muscatine, Leigh Anne Malavotte of Kenmore, Wash., Craig Rickey, of Fort Collins, Colo., and Jeanne Rickey of Stranton, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Ruth Reasor, of Mason City; and one nephew, Mike Ford, of Mason City.

KENSETT - Agnes Cleveland, 98, of Kensett, died Tuesday (Feb. 18, 2003) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Agnes Cleveland was born on Dec. 7, 1904, the second daughter of Alvin and Oline (Olson) Ranum in Northwood. She lived most of her life in Northwood, Kensett, or rural Worth County. When their mother died in 1908, Agnes and her sister were raised by their maternal grandparents, the Honorable Herbrand Langeberg and Raghnild Mikkelson Olson.

Agnes was a graduate of the Northwood High School Class of 1923. She also attended Waldorf College and went on to teach several years in rural Worth County schools. Agnes was also a bookkeeper for the Boyette Construction Company during World War II and later was the Kensett Librarian.

She was united in marriage to Ole Cleveland in 1927, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett.

Agnes had a number of interests, being a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett and active in its instrumental and vocal programs.

Agnes was bilingual, English and Norwegian, and later in life also took an interest in Spanish, this due to several Latino friends. She was particularly proud of her heritage with its roots in the Valdres Valley and Hallingdal in south central Norway.

She also had an interest in politics and always maintained that she voted for the person and not the party, but family members are skeptical of that claim.

She read widely, fiction or nonfiction. In her 90s, she also became an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeye basketball team and would have regular phone calls with her neighbor, Ida Dilts, discussing its fortunes.

Agnes had a deep religious faith, and it was this that sustained her on occasions when she suffered the loss of close family members.

Left to cherish her memory include a son, Travis Cleveland and his wife, Rebecca, of Dorchester, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; two half sisters, Clarice Paulson of Mason City and Janice Meier of Gainesville, Fla.; as well as other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ole Cleveland in 1968; two children, Harvey in infancy; daughter, Ruth Mathahs in 1984; sister, Randine Thronson; granddaughter, Rebecca Mathahs in infancy; and a great-grandson, Jack Cleveland.

KLEMME - Leo M. Kearney, 86, a lifelong resident and farmer in Klemme, died Tuesday (Feb. 18, 2003) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with Father David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, with a parish rosary service at 4:30 p.m. conducted by Regina Lamoureux and a 7 p.m. parish prayer service, conducted by Deacon Schmit and Regina Lamoureux at the funeral home. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Leo Kearney was born Sept. 5, 1917 on his parents' farm in Klemme, the son of Michael and Alice (Hemingway) Kearney. He lived on the Kearney family farm his entire life. Leo attended rural schools and later attended and graduated from Goodell High School in Goodell, where he was the class valedictorian. Following his graduation he commenced his lifelong career of farming.

Leo was united in marriage to Irene (Angelides) Tisor on Sept. 12, 1964. Following their marriage the couple farmed and made their home in rural Klemme. Irene preceded Leo in death on July 27, 1995. He continued to live on the farm until moving to the Good Shepherd Care Center on January 13.

Leo was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond and the Knights of Columbus. He had a lifelong love and devotion to working the land and had raised livestock during his farming career.

He was an avid gardener, known by many for his wonderful flowers and exceptional tomatoes. Leo loved to visit with people, caring for his special dogs and cats, and he truly enjoyed family celebrations such as birthday parties and Christmas gatherings. He enjoyed anything that involved his family and grandchildren.

Those left to cherish the memory of his life include a daughter, Sharon, and her husband, Richard Peterson, of Mason City; his three sons, Larry Tisor, and his companion, Becky Sundermeyer, of Mason City, Jon Tisor and his wife, Karen, of Thornton, and Tom Tisor and his wife, Luci, of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Rebecca Peterson, Laurel Redmond, Sandra Piipo, Kristen Tisor, Brian Tisor, Jeffrey Tisor and Amy Tisor; six great-grandchildren; a nephew, Byron Gregerson; two nieces, Adriane Klehr and Karen Haag; special cousins, Emmett and Lou Kearney, of Iowa and Winnifred Clausen, of St. Ansgar; and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Irene; and two sisters, Frances and LaVonne.

SWEA CITY - Richard "Dick" Kockler, 70, of Swea City, died at his home in Swea City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft, with Father Paul Bormann officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Bancroft, with military graveside rites by the Swea City American Legion Post.

Richard Kockler was born Sept. 3, 1932, in Waite Park, Minn. to Peter and Josephine Kockler.

He received his education in rural country schools.

Following his education, Dick farmed with his family until January of 1955. He then served in the United States Army. After his discharge from military service, he was employed at Rohlin Construction, later Everd's Construction, both in Estherville.

He enjoyed collecting stamps for a hobby.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Swea City and attended St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft.

Dick is survived by his brother, Henry Kockler, of Mason City; sister, Marion Hess, of St. Cloud, Minn.; sister-in-law, Alice Kockler, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; nephew, James; and one brother, Sylvester.

ROSE MULLENBACH

OSAGE - Rose Mullenbach, 89, of Osage, died Wednesday (Feb. 19, 2003) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Rose was born on Nov. 28, 1913, on the family farm near Stacyville, the daughter of Michael and Anna (Rauen) Heimerman. She married Clemens Mullenbach on Feb. 4, 1936, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville. They farmed in the Stacyville area. Clemens died in 1972, and following his death Rose moved to Osage.

Rose enjoyed gardening, baking and decorating cakes for weddings, birthdays, and anniversaries, etc.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Mark Reasoner officiating. Interment will be in Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Church in Stacyville with Rosary at 3:30 p.m., a Scripture service at 7 p.m. and continue one hour before services on Saturday.

She is survived by three brothers, Joseph Heimerman, of Evans, Colo., John Heimerman and his wife, Thresia, of Blooming Prairie, Minn., and Gilbert Heimerman and his wife, Shirley, of Austin, Minn.; two sisters, Stella Smith and her husband, Leo, of Stacyville, Dorothy Larson and her husband, Loris, of Austin, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Clemens, in 1972; five brothers, Gregor, Paul, Francis, Sylvester, and Michael; one sister, Cecilia.

NORA SPRINGS - Lester Otto Kreimeyer, 62, of Nora Springs, formerly of Geneva, died Monday (Feb. 17, 2003) at his home.

Lester was born on Jan. 23, 1941 in rural Ackley, to Otto and Grace (Huisenga) Kreimeyer. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1959.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1960-1963.

He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Knipfel on Sept. 18, 1965 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Ackley. They were later divorced.

He was engaged in farming and retired in 2003.

He is survived by a son, Leslie J. Kreimeyer, of Hampton; a daughter, Melissa Hinders and her husband, Ron, of Clarksville; five grandchildren, Megan, Amanda, Jessica, and Jacob Hinders, of Clarksville, and Logan Kreimeyer, of Hampton; two sisters, Marlys Kuehne and her husband, Richard, of Osage, and Betty Meyer and her husband, Lynn, of Marshalltown.

He enjoyed camping, managing the MacNider Campgrounds in Mason City, fishing, spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren, and playing cribbage with friends.

He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Lowell Harvey Moore was born Dec. 23, 1926, on the family farm near Sheffield, a son of Ralph H. and Marvel A. (Bates) Moore. He married Helen J. Sable at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Nora Springs, on Sept. 19, 1948.

Lowell attended rural school at Manly and was a 1944 graduate of Rock Falls High School in Rock Falls.

He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper during World War II. Lowell was a Mason City firefighter for several years. He owned and operated Northwood Sales Company in Northwood, a livestock sale barn.

Following his retirement from the Fire Department, he operated Short's Federal Fire Equipment Company in Mason City with his son, Steve.

Lowell's greatest love was his family. His hobbies were farming and raising livestock.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion.

Lowell is survived by his wife, Helen Moore, of Mason City; a son, Steven Moore and his wife, Shelley, of Mason City; their children, Shannon Janssen and her husband, Mike, of Mason City and Zachary Moore, of Des Moines; a son, Dave Moore and his wife, Jamey, of Mason City; and their children, Grace and Will Moore, of Mason City; a sister, Wanda Dillon and her husband, Meredith, of Mason City; two brothers, Duaine Moore and his wife, Marge, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Kenneth Moore and his wife, Carolyn, of Mason City; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Lyle Moore.
