CLEAR LAKE - Doris E. Solberg, 97, of Clear Lake, Iowa died eighteen days before her 98th birthday on Saturday (Feb. 8, 2003) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Rev. Dean Hess and the Rev. Verlye Henriksen, officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services Friday at the church.

RONALD D. 'BUTCH' JOHNSON JR.

NORA SPRINGS - Ronald D. "Butch" Johnson Jr., 39, of 114 Quimby, Nora Springs, died Friday (Feb. 7, 2003) Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Lisa Locoh officiating. Interment will be in the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton.

Visitation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. today at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye in Nora Springs, and one hour prior to service time Wednesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Ronald D. Johnson Jr. Memorial Fund.

Ronald was born in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of Ronald D. and June E. (Powell) Johnson. He moved with his parents to Webster City, Iowa. He attended school in Hampton, Iowa, where Shirley Hand and Regina Artley were a very special part of his education.

He had lived in North Iowa most of his life and the last 15 years in Nora Springs with his father.

He enjoyed fishing the Shell Rock River for catfish, country music, singing and attending Camp Sunnyside. He was involved in the Special Olympics and had won many awards in the wheelchair races.

Ronald is survived by his father, Ronald D. Johnson, of Nora Springs; his mother, June Newgaard and her husband, Richard, of Tucson, Ariz.; his two brothers, Rory Johnson, of Sheffield, and Eric Johnson and his fiancée, Merilee Beasley, of Sheffield;. and his sister, Kimberly Martinez and her husband, Dan, of Kanawha; sisters-in-law, Kim Johnson, of Hampton, and Lisa, of Keil, Wis.; two half brothers, Chris and Rick Newgaard, of Tucson, Ariz.; maternal grandmother, Jane Croxell, of Webster City.; nieces and nephews; and close friends, Lori and Doug Smidt and their children, of Nora Springs.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Tony Johnson in 1995.

MUSCATINE - Daniel J. Dugan, 65, of 1112 Westwood Lane, died Sunday (Feb. 9, 2003) at his home.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the St. Mary Church, 417 Green St. in Muscatine, with the Rev. William Meyer and the Rev. John P. Gallagher, officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

A luncheon will follow at Gannon Hall following the committal service at thecemetery.

MARTHA S. JASS

VENTURA - Martha S. Jass, 97, of Garner, formerly of Ventura, died Saturday (Feb. 8, 2003) at Concord Care Center in Garner.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church east of Garner with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Burial will in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.

Martha S. Jass, the daughter of Ferdinand and Martha (Ziesmer) Boehnke, was born Dec. 24, 1905, on a farm north of Ventura. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church east of Garner and received her education at St. John's Parochial School.

On Feb. 24, 1926, she was married to Edward Jass at St. John's Lutheran Church. They farmed in the Ventura area for 44 years. They were the parents of a son, Virgil, who died in 1944 at the age of 15.

After her husband's death in 1976, she continued to live in Ventura. Martha moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner in 1997 and in 1999 became a resident of Concord Care Center in Garner.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid where she served as secretary and mite box treasurer.

Martha is survived by her nephews and nieces, Harold Pueggel and his wife, Carol, of Garner, Sylvia Swale and her husband, Ralph, of Clear Lake, Robert Ollenburg and his wife, Elaine, of Ventura, Lois Kotz of Ventura, Marie Moe of Des Moines, Harriet Oetting and her husband, Gene, of Seward, Neb., Viola Monahan of Fort Collins, Colo., and Darlene Wolfram and her husband, the Rev. James, of Spirit Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, on Oct. 19, 1976; her son, Virgil on July 13, 1944; her twin brother, Ferdinand; a brother, Ted Boehnke; and three sisters, Emma Pueggel, Olga Ollenburg and Ruth Ollenburg.

DUMONT - Robert A. Kampman, 77, of Dumont, died Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Steve Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery in Dumont, with military services provided by the Dumont Legion Post #360.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.

Robert was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Bristow, to Albert and Anna (VanHorn) Kampman. He was raised in Butler County and attended Butler County rural schools. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

He married Reka Gronewold on Jan. 9, 1954 in Dumont.

He was a farmer and later employed by the Dumont Co-op Elevator.

He attended the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton.

He was a member of the Dumont Legion Post No. 360. He enjoyed bowling, his children, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Wendell Kampman and his wife, Sharon, of Forest City, and Wayne Kampman and his wife, Deb, of Hampton; one brother, Albert Kampman and his wife, Patty, of Marion; four sisters, Fannie Lubben, of Manchester, Alma Studnicka, of Blue River, Wis., Margaret Asche and her husband, John, of Parkersburg, and Ann Kampman, of Waterloo; his mother-in-law, Jennie Gronewold, of Dumont, three sisters-in-law, Irene Kramer, of Allison, Aleasa Kampman, of Allison, and Marj Kampman, of Dumont; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Chris, Willie and Harvie Kampman; sister, Arlene Gentz; and two brothers in infancy.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Thomas A. Robeson, 63, of 1030 Ensley Ave. Apt. 100, Northfield, Minn., died on Friday (Feb. 7, 2003).

Funeral services were held at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 12650 Johnny Cake Ridge Road in Apple Valley, Minn. with the Rev. Chris Smith and the Rev. Paul Harrington officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at the Rudd Cemetery after cremation.

Thomas A. Robeson was born on Jan. 4, 1940.

CHARLES CITY - Irene Marie (Kruse) Carr, 67, of Spring Valley, Minn., formerly of Charles City, Iowa, died on Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday at the Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, 316 N. Broadway Ave., in Spring Valley, Minn. Private burial will be on Monday in Charles City.

Irene Marie (Kruse) Carr was born May 5, 1935, in London, Minn., to Charles and Amy (Collins) Kruse. She graduated from LeRoy High School and married H. Allen Carr on March 26, 1960, in Charles City.

She is survived by two daughters, Ronda (Gail) Brogan, of Spring Valley, Minn., and Ann Marie Thomas, of Lakeville, Minn.; one son, Robert Allen Carr, of Birmingham, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Philip Leibold, Danny Leibold, Jenny Lynn Leibold, Cameron Marie Carr, Ginger Edna Carr, Taylor Miller Thomas, Christopher Brogan, and Bradley Brogan; five great-grandchildren, Kelly Sue Leibold, Katlynn Rose Leibold, Eric Brogan, Monica Brogan, and Kelsey Brogan; three sisters, Jackie Root, of Mazeppa, Helen Johnson, of Rochester, and Gail Shelstad, of Mazeppa; and one brother, Glenn Kruse, of Mable.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, and one brother.

Doris was born Feb. 26, 1905 in rural Grant Township, Clear Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Minnie (Nelsen) Christiansen. She attended rural school in Grant Township and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1925. She taught in rural school.

Doris married Donald Solberg, of Forest City, on Feb. 23, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. They moved to a farm north of Forest City, where they made their home until her husband's death on May 19, 1969. She then moved to Clear Lake and lived there until Dec. 16, 1998, when she moved to Concord Care Center in Garner, Iowa.

Doris was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Several nieces and nephews survive Doris.

Preceding her in death was her parents; husband, Donald; five brothers, Charles, Henry, Donald, Paul and Floyd Christiansen; and five sisters, Mary Locke, Anna Long, Carrie Conibear, Lillian Henriksen and Emma Tantow.

RUDOLPH 'RUDY' FREESEMAN

BRITT - Rudolph "Rudy" Freeseman, 72, of Britt, passed away Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Rudolph Freeseman will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the First Lutheran Church in Britt with the Rev. Dr. John Meyer officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with a flag presentation by the Britt Ceremonial Unit.

Friends may greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street West in Britt, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Rudolph, the son of Harm C. and Martha (Scheibel) Freesemann was born Nov. 28, 1930, in Britt. He grew up in rural Britt, and received his education in the Britt schools. Rudolph served in the U. S. Army, stationed in Germany.

On Feb. 14, 1955, Rudolph was united in marriage with Pauline Nessa at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. The couple farmed and raised three daughters in the Britt area. Rudolph and Pauline farmed until 1993, when they moved into Britt.

Rudolph was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Britt. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and playing billiards.

Rudolph is survived by his wife, Pauline, of Britt; daughters, Julie Pralle and her husband, Terry, of Geneva, Rosalie Kemnitzer and her husband, Mike, of Altoona, and Patricia Freeseman, of Pacific Grove, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Harm Freesemann Jr.; three sisters, Louise Anderson, Martha Austin, and Rosalie Freesemann.

GARNER - Marjorie W. Elling, 90, of Garner died Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Garner, with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Private graveside services will be held at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

There will be no visitation.

Marjorie Wilhelmina Elling, the daughter of William James and Lila (Dodge) Dorsey, was born Oct. 19, 1912 at St. Ansgar. She graduated from high school, receiving her Normal Teaching Certificate.

She taught in the rural schools of Mitchell County and then continued her education at AIB in Des Moines.

She was married to Emil C. Elling from Garner. They made their home in Garner the rest of their lives. They enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner and UMW.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lavon Dorsey, of Osage; two nephews and a niece in Osage and Des Moines; and other nieces and nephews.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, E.C. Elling; her parents; a brother, Gene Dorsey; and a sister, Dorothy Rogers.

EDWARD L. STAYNER

OSAGE - Edward L. Stayner, 64, of rural Osage died Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Edward was born Aug. 17, 1938, in Mason City, the son of Wilbur R. and Susie O. (Askelson) Stayner. He graduated from Northwood High School in 1958.

Edward was united in marriage to Madelyn Carol Cline on April 16, 1966 at the Methodist Church in Charles City. They farmed in Northwood, Wykoff, Minn. and then moved to a farm near Osage in 1971.

Edward loved restoring old tractors.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1202 390th St. of rural Osage, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before services at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Madelyn Carol Stayner, of rural Osage; two daughters, Sara Hardy and her husband, Les, of Orchard and their children, Rachel and Daniel Shanan Hackensmith, of Osage and her children, Logan, Lucas and Desiree; three sons, Timothy Stayner of Osage, Theadoar Stayner and his wife, Amanda, of Nora Springs and their daughter, Madelynn, and Samuel Stayner of Osage; one sister, Kathleen Corell and her husband, Roger, of Mason City; and one brother, Grayling Stayner and his wife, Marilyn, of Northwood.

TONY AXIOTIS

MASON CITY - Tony Axiotis, 56, of 725 N. Washington Ave., died Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) at his home.

A celebration of Tony's life will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, where a Trisagion Service will be offered by Father Joseph Mirowski, of Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be given to the Tony Axiotis Memorial Fund.

Tony Anthony Axiotis was born Dec. 6, 1946, at Mason City, a son of Emanuel "Mike" and Bessie (Despenas) Axiotis. He married Kristine M. Schmidt on Dec. 26, 1970, at Mason City.

Tony was a 1965 graduate of Mason City High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Mankato State University in Mankato, Minn., in 1972.

Tony owned and operated Rembrandt Painters in Mason City for the past 28 years. From 1981-1987 he owned Antonio's, a Mason City restaurant.

Tony loved art. In the past few years he produced many pieces of art. He especially enjoyed traveling with his family and friends.

He is survived by, his wife, Kristine Axiotis, of Mason City; a daughter, Maria Axiotis, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a son, Michael Axiotis, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; his mother, Bessie Axiotis, of Clear Lake; a sister, Calliope Bitker and her husband, Doug, of Overland Park, Kan.; a brother, Lewis Axiotis and his wife, Diamanto, of Clear Lake; his father-in-law, Dale Schmidt, of Clear Lake; a brother-in-law, Frank Schmidt, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and his father, Emanuel "Mike" Axiotis.

HAMPTON - Helen M. Kramer, 81, a resident of the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, formerly of the Rowan, Dows, and Belmond areas, died Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. in Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson of St. John and St. Olaf Lutheran Churches in Belmond, officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery, east of Belmond, with full military honors performed by the Rowan American Legion Post.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home in Belmond and continue one hour prior to services Saturday.

HARLEY ERNST WALK

GRAFTON - Harley Ernst Walk, 83, of Grafton died Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) at his home.

Harley was born July 11, 1919, on the family farm near Grafton, the son of Christian and Lora (Bruesewitz) Walk. Harley's grandfather built the house in which he was born and he lived there his entire life.

He attended Grafton High School and was Salutatorian of his class. While in high school, Harley participated in basketball.

He served in World War II as a field clerk in San Antonio, Texas. Harley was a lifelong member of the Grafton American Legion Post # 616.

Harley was united in marriage to Viola M. Frisch of Grafton. To this union two children were born, Anne and Mark. Viola passed away in 1973.

In 1974, Harley was united in marriage to Alphia Rachut.

He was an early adopter of turkey farming in Grafton, where he and his brother Lowell Walk, managed Walk Bros. Turkeys until his retirement from farming in 1981. Harley loved the Grafton life.

He was a member of the St. Ansgar School Board during the time his children were in high school. For many years, he supervised the grilling of turkeys for Grafton Turkey Days. When he was not able to continue this task due to the success of the event and his age, he participated by helping.

He loved fishing and was a skilled fisherman. He fished in Minnesota, Canada, and was fortunate to have fished at Yellowstone Lake in Wyoming and the Atlantic Ocean near Boston, Mass. Harley was an avid "500" player and would play anytime given the opportunity.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Interment will be in the Grafton Cemetery in Grafton.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage. Visitation will continue one hour before services Saturday at the church.

He is survived by his wife, Alphia Walk of the Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar; one daughter, Anne Hammond and her husband, Harry, of Boulder, Colo., and their children David and Christopher; one son, Mark Walk and his wife, Tracy, of Osage, and their children, Allison and Stephany; three step-daughters, Mary Greenman and her husband, Al,of Austin, Minn., and their families, Darlene Zuehl and her husband, Verle, of Northbridge, Mass., and their families, and Betty Brumm and her husband, Stan, of Eden Prairie, Minn., and their families; one brother, Lowell Walk and his wife, Virginia, of Grafton, and a special niece, Nancy Walk Severson, of Grafton.

BELVA M. HANSON

CARPENTER - Belva M. Hanson, 95, of rural Carpenter, died on Monday (Feb. 10, 2003) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Belva was born on Dec. 17, 1907, in Mt. Carroll, Ill. to Seth F. and Margaret (Rawlins) Kenyon. She graduated from Leland High School in 1926 and then from nurses training at Park Hospital in Mason City.

She married Myron Hanson on June 24, 1936, at the Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter. Belva was an active homemaker and farm wife after her marriage. She returning to nursing in 1965 at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

She enjoyed two trips to Europe which included Scandinavia, Germany and England. Belva loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She enjoyed quilting, baking cookies and cakes, gardening and flowers and cooking.

Belva was very active in church activities including friendship club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and six brothers.

Belva is survived by two sons, Lowell Hanson, of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Lyle Hanson, of Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Myra Peterson, of Austin, Minn. and Evelyn Cross, of Hampton; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Rodney Kenyon, of Dexter, Minn.

RALPH LLOYD STURGES

MURRIETA, Calif. - Ralph Lloyd Sturges passed away Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at Rancho Springs Medical Center from emphysema at the age of 73.

Mr. Sturges was born on Aug. 31, 1929, in Iowa and lived in Riverside County for seven years.

Mr. Sturges was a school administrator for 35 years. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa, received his master's degree at the University of Iowa and did further graduate study at Southwest University of Southern California.

He was a principal for 30 years in the Norwalk area and retired in 1986.

He was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. He also received the Purple Heart medal.

His hobbies included piloting small aircraft, motorcycle riding (Harley-Davidsons of choice) and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Janet, of Murrieta, Calif.; son, Craig and Jill, of Carlsbad, Calif.; daughter, Lani and Ed Morel, of Temecula, Calif.; daughter, Jami and Richard Delperdang, of San Clemente, Calif.; sister, Elaine Thompson, of Ida Grove, Iowa; sister, Darlene Stile, of Charles City, Iowa; and seven grandchildren.

All services were private.

She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ.

HELEN MARIE KRAMER

HAMPTON - Helen Marie Kramer, 81, a resident of the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton, formerly of the Rowan and Dows areas, died Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2003) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Tenold-Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First Ave. S. E., in Belmond, with the Rev. Lowell H. Halvorson of the St. Olaf and St. John Lutheran Churches in Belmond officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery east of Belmond, with full military honors performed by the Rowan American Legion.

Helen Ryerson was born July 25, 1921, in Eau Claire, Wis., the daughter of Arthur Melvin and Ida Palma (Williams) Ryerson. She moved with her family to Chicago, Ill., at age 3. Helen attended Chicago Public Schools and graduated from Senn High School. She later attended Hunter College for two years. Her post-secondary field of study was sociology.

Helen was a veteran of World War II. She entered the United States Navy on Sept. 7, 1944, in Chicago, Ill. Her tenure of service was stateside. Her basic training was at the Glenville Naval Base in Illinois. Her active duty was spent partially in New York, where she served as a dental technician.

During her active duty she was stationed for a time at the St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York. She served a total of 20 months and was honorably discharged as a Hospital Apprentice First Class on March 4, 1946 at Great Lakes, Ill. She received the American Campaign and WWII Victory Ribbons.

Helen's patriotism and pride in her country was a theme that she carried with her throughout her entire life. She was a 50-year-plus member of the American Legion. She was Past Commander of the only all-female American Legion Post No. 988 in Chicago.

She was a longtime active member of the Rowan American Legion Post No. 159. Helen served for a number of years as Chairwoman of the Midwest Waves, and was a Charter member of the Waves National Organization.

Helen married Raymond Harold Kramer Sr. on Sept. 20, 1946 in Chicago, Ill. To this union four children were born. Two sons, Raymond Harold Kramer Jr., on Jan. 23, 1948, and William Ryerson Kramer on Oct. 10, 1949; a daughter, Nancy Helen Kramer on May 13, 1952; and a son, James Richard Kramer on Dec. 28, 1955, who died in infancy.

The family made their home in Chicago for many years. Helen was employed as a ward clerk at Wesley Memorial Hospital for 30 years. She was also employed for a short time at the Franklin General Hospital prior to her retirement. Helen was preceded in death by her husband on Aug. 22, 1964. She continued to live in Chicago until moving to Rowan in 1979. She had lived in Dows for many years and for a time at the Leinbach Retirement Center in Belmond.

Helen also lived with her daughter's family for a period of time, and was a resident of the Dows Senior Citizen Center, and at the Dows USA Health Care Center until it closed this past summer, at which time she moved to the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility.

In earlier years of her married life Helen and Raymond enjoyed dancing. Helen had a lifelong love of genealogy that commenced at age 11 and continued into her mid 70s. Much of her work was very detailed, and involved tracing her ancestors in Belmond and surrounding areas. She was a long-time member of the Wright County Genealogical Society and various other genealogy groups during her life.

Helen was a foster parent to more than 40 children. She loved kids and passed on her belief in the role of foster parenting to her daughter and family as well. She always tried to put the needs of others before her own. Helen loved time spent with her family. She avidly enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, and had a philosophy that she lived by during her life, focusing on taking the road less traveled, exploring and traveling the back roads of life. She is survived by her son, Raymond H. Kramer Jr, and his wife, Laurie, of Los Alamos, N.M. and their children, Eric, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kelly, of Los Alamos, N.M.; step-daughters, Gwen Ann and Kyla Lynn Michaels, both of Los Alamos, N.M.; a son, William Ryerson Kramer, of Chicago, Ill.; daughter, Nancy Helen Rothman, and her husband, Carey, and their children, Alexander William and Victoria Suzanne Rothman, all of Latimer; a foster daughter, Ellen Neuman, of Bensonville, Ill.; a brother, Robert Ryerson and his wife, Beverly, of Baldwin, Mo.; also many other relatives and friends.

OSAGE - Mary D. Counsell, 77, formerly of Osage, died Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Mary was born in Washington D.C. on June 25, 1925, the daughter of Percy and Julia (Burke) Murray.

She met and later married Carlin Counsell on Dec. 17, 1950. They farmed for 23 years near New Haven and were the parents of five children: Ann, Sharon, Michael, Nancy and Susan. She sold Watkins and Avon products.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage.

DALE L. FROHLING

BELMOND - Dale L. Frohling, 71, of Meservey, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2003) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Dale L. Frohling will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Salem United Methodist Church in Meservey, with the Pastor Dan Voss officiating. Burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery, with military rites by the William Schmale Post No. 171.

Visitation for Dale L. Frohling will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick Lane S. in Belmond, and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Dale, the son of Herman and Annie Koenen Frohling, was born April 15, 1931 in rural Belmond. He attended country schools in the Belmond and Thornton area.

Dale entered the U.S. Army in November of 1951. He received his high school diploma while serving in the Army. He served during the Korean War and was a military policeman for a POW camp during that time. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 1, 1959.

On Feb. 5, 1960, Dale was united in marriage to Myra Zieman at the Immanuel Reformed Church in Belmond. The couple made their home on the Zieman farm near Meservey and later Thornton, where Dale and Myra were engaged in crop and livestock farming. He retired in 1991. The couple then moved to an acreage south of Meservey.

Dale enjoyed tinkering with engines in his spare time. Dale and Myra enjoyed working together. He loved anything outdoors, especially riding horses with his family. He drove a horse and buggy in several parades.

Dale liked to visit, and could start a conversation with anybody. He enjoyed telling stories. Dale loved his grandchildren, and he liked being around anything that involved them. After Dale retired he helped his children on their acreages, and helped area farmers with combining. He also did some trucking for FS.

Dale was a member of the American Legion in Meservey and the VFW in Garner. He was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church of Meservey.

Dale is survived by his wife, Myra; one daughter, Jody Grant and her husband, Troy, of Thornton; and one son, Ryan and his wife, Ami, of Garner; two brothers, Merle and his wife, Dee, of Meservey, and Byron and his wife, Charlotte, of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Megan and Cody Grant, of Thornton, Emma Grace Frohling, of Garner; numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Lucille M. Pitkin was born on Dec. 14, 1912, on a farm in Madison Township, Winnebago County, Iowa, the daughter of Earnest and Mable (Jensen) Bonar. She attended Madison School No. 5 near her home, and on Dec. 15, 1930, was united in marriage to Milo James Pitkin at her parents' home.

The couple lived in the Forest City area for several years before moving to a farm in Madison Township. They retired from farming in 1979 and moved into Forest City.

Milo passed away in 1981 and Lucille continued living on her own until shortly before her death. She was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City.

Lucille enjoyed gardening, crocheting and spending the winters in Texas.

She was a loving grandmother, making special Christmas cookies for the grandchildren and also entertaining family and friends at the Clear Lake cottage.

Lucille is survived by her children, Milo J. Pitkin and his wife, Deloris, of Belvadere, Ill. and Sheryl Johnson and her husband, Ralph, of Forest City; son-in-law, Dean Krieger, of Forest City; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

FRANK AUGUST METZGER

DES MOINES - Frank August Metzger, 73, of 2922 38th St., Des Moines, died on Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2003) at Hospice Kavanaugh House, of lung cancer.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Immanuel United Methodist Church, 2900 49th St. in Des Moines, with the Rev. Dana Wimmer officiating. There will be a private family burial.

Frank A. Metzger was born in Lake Forest, Ill., on April 4, 1929, to Frank and Irene Metzger.

He was in the United States Marines during the Korean War.

He was united in marriage to Joanne Jones in Creston on Aug. 21, 1949.

He spent 15 years in Bedford, two years in Grinnell and 35 years in Des Moines. He was with the Iowa State Patrol for 37 years. He retired a colonel in 1988.

He was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church, and belonged to the Iowa State Patrol 20-Year Retiree Club.

He enjoyed his family, athletics and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Metzger of Des Moines; son, Dan Metzger and his wife, Joan, of Stockton, Ill.; son, Frank Metzger Jr. and his wife, Marilyn, of Mason City; and son, Michael Metzger and his wife, Connie, of Oakland, Iowa; a sister, Shirley Lee and her husband, Tom, of Sylmar, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Jason, Ben, Marcus, Matt, Brad, Brendan and Gemma; three great-grandchildren, Travis, Tyner and one soon to be born.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Michele.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa or the Immanuel United Methodist Church in his name.

MILDRED M. WHITNEY

MASON CITY - Mildred M. Whitney, 92, of 2501 W. State St., died Thursday (Feb. 13, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa following complications from brain aneurysm surgery.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jeff Dahlin officiating. The family will gather for inurnment at a later date in Fayette.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mildred M. Whitney Memorial Fund or donor's choice.

Mildred was born Dec. 22, 1910, in Fayette, Iowa, the daughter of Albert James and Effie Mae (Carmichael) Steggall. She attended school in Fayette and graduated from Upper Iowa University which was only one block from the family home.

Mildred was united in marriage to Charles Whitney on Aug. 5, 1937, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They were blessed with three daughters, Kay, Jan and Barb.

Mildred taught school in Stanley, West Union, Hayfield and Garner. She lived in Garner for 53 years and was active in the Methodist Church, Eastern Star, DAR, study clubs and enjoyed playing bridge.

In her later years, she enjoyed playing cribbage with her husband and son-in-law. Charlie and she traveled extensively and spent many winters in Queen Valley, Ariz.

Mildred moved to Mason City in 1995 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church and also a member of the Sarah Circle. She was a loyal friend to many, with her family and friends being an important part of her life.

Mildred is survived by two daughters, Kay Leet and husband, Dick, of Mason City, and Barb Nuehring and husband, Mike, of Mason City; grandchildren, Kim Funkhouser and husband, Jon, of Fairfield, Todd Leet and wife, Jennifer, of Mason City, Amanda Pappas and husband, Andrew, of Cedar Rapids, and Whitney Nuehring of Cedar Falls; great-grandchildren, Joanna, Rachel and Jeremiah Funkhouser, Mara and baby-to-be Leet; sister-in-law, Martha Cooper of Garner; and several nieces and nephews.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; husband and her 2-year-old daughter, Jan Paulette.
