CHARLES CITY - Ernest "Bud" Monroe, 71, of 214 Cedar Circle, Charles City, died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at his residence after a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Congregational Church in Charles City with the Rev. Gale Richards, pastor of the Colwell United Church of Christ, officiating. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit at the church. Private graveside services will be held later at Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hauser Funeral Home,1205 S. Main St. and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.

HAMPTON - Gus H. Tonjes, 74, of Hampton, died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

BANCROFT - Bernard J. Carpenter, 78, of Bancroft, died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft with the Rev. Paul D. Bormann officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg, with military honors by the American Legion McKinnon Post 377 of Bancroft.

WINONA, Minn. - Zella Ruth Huntbatch, 81, of the Sauer Memorial Home in Winona, Minn., died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003) at the Sauer Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with the Rev. Patricia Connor of the Geneva United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Lindenwood Cemetery in Geneva.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

LORETTA MELINDA HACKBART

GRAFTON - Loretta Melinda Hackbart, 76, of Grafton, died Thursday (Jan. 30, 2003) at her home in Grafton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St. in Manly, and one hour prior to service time on Monday at the church.

Loretta Melinda Hackbart was born on April 15, 1926, at Plymouth, Iowa, the daughter of Lawrence and Melinda (Dobel) Glassel. She became a child of God through baptism at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton on May 9, 1926. Her sponsors were her grandparents, Emil Glassel and Mrs. Herman (Marie) Dobel. She reaffirmed her faith of her baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith on June 1, 1941, by the Rev. H.L. Lechner.

Loretta graduated from Plymouth High School in 1944, and attended summer sessions at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. After completing her schooling, Loretta taught rural schools in Union Township in Worth County and Lime Creek Township in Cerro Gordo County, and worked at the Standard Oil business office in Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Robert William Hackbart on Oct. 31, 1948, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. He preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 1999.

After their marriage, the couple lived on the century Hackbart farm south of Grafton all of their 50 years of married life. After Bob's death, Loretta continued to reside on the farm.

Loretta was a lifelong member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, and was active in the Women's Missionary Federation, American Lutheran Church Women and the Lutheran Church Women as vice-president and then president for six years. Loretta truly enjoyed these years of service, growing spiritually and making many new friends with Christian women throughout the conference and state.

She also taught Sunday school, was a Bethel Bible teacher, and a member of the church council and of the Altar Guild.

Loretta was very active in the Grafton Community Action organization, serving as treasurer for four years and co-editor of the monthly newsletter, "The Scoop." She received the Governor's Volunteer Award in 1995 from Gov. Terry Branstad.

She served for 15 years as a member of the Worth County unit of the American Cancer Society and on the Lutheran Brotherhood Worth County Branch board for nine years.

She was also active in high school sports and continued as an avid sports fan.

Left to cherish her memory is her family: two sons, Lee Hackbart, of Grafton, and Neil Hackbart and his wife, Donna, of Grafton; grandchildren, Jason Hackbart and his wife, Jody, and their daughter, Brooklyn Lanae Hackbart, of rural Kensett, and Amy Powers and her husband, Derrick, of Grafton; a brother, Rufus Glassel and his wife, Doris, of Plymouth; brothers and sisters-in-law, Truman and Lorraine Julseth, of rural Northwood, and Roger and Lucille Hackbart of Golden Valley, Minn.; one nephew and five nieces and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Melinda Dobel Glassel, and her husband, Robert, in 1999.

JOSEPH 'JOBY' TORRES

MASON CITY - Joseph "Joby" Torres, 74, formerly of Mason City, passed away on Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) at his home in Naples, Fla.

Joseph was born on March 2, 1928, a son of Cleofas and Mary (Rangel) Torres.

His interests were fishing, camping and hunting. He also played horseshoes and the stock market.

He was a former member of the Migrant Action Program.

He is survived by his wife, Bertie; three sons, Joseph Jr. and his wife, Jacky, Mark and Dan; one daughter, Kathy West and her husband, Virgil; five grandchildren, Nathan Torres, Tara Torres, Ileen Torres, Joshua West and Dakota Torres; two brothers, Isop Torres and Jesse Torres, and two sisters, Sally Gallo and Minnie Gonzales.

Memorial services will be held March 9, 2003, in Naples, Fla.

CHARLES JUNIOR HAZLETT

LAKE FOREST, Calif. - Charles Junior Hazlett, 78, of Lake Forest, died Tuesday (Jan. 21, 2003) at his home.

Charles Junior Hazlett was born on Sept. 30, 1924, in Mason City, Iowa, the oldest of five children of Leona Glorence Van Fleet and Charles Calcord Hazlett.

In 1942, he graduated from Mason City High School, enlisted in the U.S. Army and began service in the 101st Airborne Division during World War II.

He saw combat at Normandy on June 6, 1944, suffered the terrible winter of 1944-45 in Bastogne, Belgium, and accompanied the allied forces into Germany and Bavaria.

While preparing for the Normandy invasion in England, he met Diana Nancy Downton and married her on Aug. 15, 1945. After the war, Charles and Nancy returned to the U.S. and Iowa and started their family.

During the nearly 40 years that Charles and Nancy were raising their children in Mason City, Charles worked tirelessly as manager of Currie's Hardware Store and was a well-known figure in the local business community.

In 1985, he and Nancy moved to El Toro, Calif., where two of their children already lived. There he worked for six years as supervisor in his son Steven's construction business while running his own handyman service in Orange County.

In 1993, he retired to enjoy his family and a well-earned rest from his labors.

He is survived by a large family, his wife, Nancy Hazlett; two sisters, Patty Gephart and Anita Sampson; his three sons, Jerry (Vonna), John (Mo) and Steven (Lori); four daughters, Vanessa (Gary) Kasik, Polly (Jeff) Ostgaard, Laura (Greg) Menke and Theresa (Bob) VanEvery; and 16 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

KENYON VERBECKMOES

MASON CITY - Kenyon Verbeckmoes, 95, of Mason City, died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) in Phoenix, Ariz., where he spent the winter months with his children and grandchildren.

Born in Atkinson, Ill., he moved with his parents and two sisters to Clear Lake, where he graduated from high school in 1926.

Self-employed most of his life, he had several gourmet and specialty foods businesses under the name Kenyon's in Clear Lake and in Mason City.

Kenyon served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. While stationed in California, he married Viola Bless of Clear Lake. Kenyon and Viola returned with their children to Mason City in 1961.

Kenyon loved to travel, hunt, fish and play pinochle.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and several civic organizations.

Preceding Kenyon in death were his mother, Gertrude; father, Art; sister, Loretta Marshal, and wife, Viola.

Survivors include his son, John Arthur, and daughter-in-law, Peg, of Phoenix, Ariz.; his daughter, Kay Busch, son-in-law, David, and grandchildren, Andrew and Adriene Busch, of Tempe, Ariz.; his sister, Maud Estelle Hayes, of Fort Dodge, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass and reception will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 21, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake

MASON CITY - Bessie G. "Coolie" Wagner, 70, of 610 Briarstone Drive, died Wednesday (Jan. 29, 2003) at the USA Healthcare Center in Mason City.

Bessie was born on Sept. 15, 1932, in Mason City to George and Stella (Kantaris) Makris. She attended school in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School in 1951.

Bessie was united in marriage to Dale John Wagner on Oct. 18, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Detroit, Mich., living there for several years. They returned to Mason City, where they were self-employed in the restaurant and tavern business, most notably as the owners of the Stew and Brew. They sold the Stew and Brew, retiring in late 1994.

Bessie was very hard working and devoted her life to the well-being of her friends and family. She was active in the church and sang in the choir. She enjoyed Greek dancing, playing pool, and spending time with her friends and family.

Bessie is survived by two daughters: Christine Aronoff, her husband, David, and their children, Zoe and Ari, all of Frisco, Texas, and Stella Frank and her children, Nicole, Jordan, Hillary and Sophia, all of Mason City; a sister, Kathryn Douglas and her husband, Robert, of Mason City; aunts, uncles, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, George Makris; her mother and step-father, Stella and Frank Markos; her husband, Dale, and a brother, John Makris.

Ernest "Bud" David Monroe was born Jan. 17, 1932, at Charles City, the son of Ernest R. and Myrtle (Exline) Monroe. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1950. Bud served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

On Aug. 4, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marilee Stanton at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

During his career, Bud worked at the Oliver and White Farm Corp. for 42 years, retiring in 1992. Bud was a member of the First Congregational Church, Local 1315 of the United Auto Workers, Elks Lodge, Floyd County Historical Society and the American Legion.

Never to be forgotten will be Bud's fervor as a Hawkeye fan, the love and care for his family as seen in his participation in his children's activities and desire to spend time with them as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his willingness to travel and his enjoyment of playing cards.

Living family members include his wife, Marilee of Charles City; two daughters, Julie (Bill) Fee of Cedar Falls, and Malinda (Wes) Quinn of Pittsboro, N.C.; two sons, Mitchell (Anne) Monroe of Oak Harbor, Wash., and Mark Monroe of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Michelle Evans, Christina Kroll, Steven Monroe, Ben, Nick and Andy Fee, and Elizabeth Ann Quinn; and two great-grandchildren, Kameron Burns and Kimberly Evans.

His parents; a grandson, Monroe Quinn, and a sister, Shirley Moses, preceded him in death.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the First Congregational Church.

SHEFFIELD - Frederick A. Schreiber, 82, of Sheffield, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

LEVI HORTON

MASON CITY - Levi Horton, 81, of Mason City, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. with the Rev. Thomas Healey, Chaplain at Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 West, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the Levi Horton Memorial Fund.

Levi was born on April 12, 1921, in Sullivan County, Tennessee, to John and Rosie Pearl (Reed) Horton. He served in the Army during World War II from December of 1942 until February of 1946.

On Nov. 10, 1945, Levi was united in marriage to Edna Mae Wenzel, who passed away on Feb. 9, 1990. He then married Lizzie Kathleen Cobb on Nov. 25, 1995. Levi lived most of his life in the Mason City area and worked for Cerro Gordo County in road maintenance.

He enjoyed going to auctions and setting up booths to sell things at area flea markets, where he made many friends.

Levi is survived by a daughter, Betty L. Digwo, of Mason City; a grandson, Christian Digwo and his wife, Gemma, of New York City, N.Y.; a sister, Helen Gerhardt, of Mendota, Va.; and a niece, Joretta Hutton and her husband, Roby, of Blountville, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Edna Mae; his second wife, Kathleen; a sister, Janie, and a brother, George.

GENEVA - Maxine Hattie Stackhouse, 87, of Geneva, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa, in Mason City.

MILDRED A. BAKER

CLEAR LAKE - Mildred A. Baker, 95, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. A private family committal service will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Mildred was born at the Pinewood Farm east of Clear Lake on Dec. 29, 1907, the daughter of Laverne Charles and Gertrude (Wilson) Baker. She graduated from a Lake Township rural school and from the Clear Lake High School from the Normal Training Course. Mildred attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated from the two-year Primary Course with a teaching degree. She then worked as an elementary and primary teacher for fifteen years, teaching in rural schools and in the towns of Goodell, Clarion, and Clear Lake. Mildred retired early from teaching to take care of her mother and sisters. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Clear Lake and served as the Sunday School superintendent for many years.

Mildred is survived by four cousins, Frank R. Baker and his wife, Ruth Elaine, of Clear Lake, Madge Brandau of Rudd, Charleen Sivwright of Rockwell, and Shirley Dean and her husband, Richard, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sets of twin brothers in infancy; and two sisters, Viola Ruth and Annie Lucy.

MASON CITY - Clyde Starkey, 64, a resident of 819 Fifth St. S.E., formerly of Charles City, died Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Clyde Starkey will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City, with the Rev. Chris Prodhajfky, St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

Clyde Howard Starkey was born Oct. 17, 1938, at Charles City, the son of Robert and Ruth (Dailey) Starkey. He attended the Charles City High School. On Sept. 26, 1959, he was united in marriage to Donna Putney at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. During his working career, Clyde worked for Lindaman Dairy, Sperry Transportation, Hydrotile Machinery Company, Takin Brothers, and H & W Motor Express, from where he retired.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Teamsters, and the Moose Lodge. Clyde collected and assembled model tractors and trucks. The time spent with his family was very important to him. He also took special joy in harassing his neighbors, especially Walt.

Living family members include his wife, Donna, of Mason City; two daughters, Debbra Starkey, of Rapid City, S.D., and Christina Starkey, of Mason City; a son, Clyde (Tracy) Starkey, Jr., of Fort Wayne, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Pettigrew, Brandon Starkey, Dillon Starkey, Stevi Jean Starkey, Jared Starkey, Greg Johnson, Jeffery Zappa, and Samantha Zappa; and a great grandson, Thomas Lee Johnson; a sister, Jon Fredricks, of Mason City; three brothers, Glenn (Kathy) Starkey, of Mill Valley, Calif., Jerry (Joann) Starkey, of Mason City, and Richard Starkey, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; and a brother-in-law, Jack Ferch, of Conrad.

MASON CITY - Beverly J. "Snooks" Foster, 61, of 637 S. President Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Sarah Rohret Odoom officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery.

Beverly Jean Foster was born July 9, 1941, in Mason City, to Charles and Evelyn (Petty) Jackson. She was a lifelong resident of Mason City. Beverly was employed in her earlier years at the Mason City Municipal Airport in the restaurant/food service area. She was the proud mother of seven children, grandmother of fifteen and great grandmother of four. She enjoyed family gatherings and all the busy activities that a large family brings. During her leisure time, Beverly found great fun and excitement spending time at a variety of sites playing bingo or trying her luck at the casino slots. She will be well remembered for her love of country music and listening to any songs performed by Buddy Holly or Elvis. Her love of peaceful moments was reflected in her collection of Cherubs.

Beverly's survivors include her husband, Lionel Foster, Sr., of Mason City; her daughters, Kandy Rockwell, Darlinda Foster, and Kristle Foster, all of Mason City; Dawn Briner and Danette Foster, both of Waterloo, and Dina Foster, of Des Moines; one son, Lionel Foster, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Des Moines; two sisters, Kathy Branstad, of Kensett and Amy Peterson, of Harcourt, Iowa. Many other relatives and friends will sadly miss Beverly.

LAVON AUDRY SCHULTZ

ROCKFORD - LaVon Audry Schultz, 76, of 1849 Red Ball Rd., Rockford, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Officiating will be the Rev. John Bailey assisted by LaVon's grandson, Rev. John Stonecypher of the Church of God, Mason City. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral chapel.

Lavon was born on Feb. 28, 1926, one of 14 children, to August and Augusta "Kramer" Schrage at Bristow. She graduated in the class of 1944 from Charles City High School. In her teenage years she worked at the concession stand at the Charles City Theatre.

She married Virgil Brown Sr. on Aug. 7, 1945, and he preceded her in death in 1947. To this union was born two children.

She later was united in marriage to Albert M. Schultz on Nov. 26, 1948. She and "Whitey" shared in the birth of six children.

LaVon continued working at various businesses in North Iowa, which included Fischer's Manufacturing during the war years making canvas bunks and cots for the GIs. She also was a seamstress and tailor at Bee's Clothing, operated the pressing and iron machines at Band Box Day Cleaners, worked as an aide at Bascombe Nursing Home, housekeeping at Americana Nursing home and received the Top Seller Award for Playhouse Toys in Iowa.

She was the president of the Sunset Generation Senior Citizens in Rockford for many years and was the manager, former president and served on the board of Peoples Food Coop in Mason City. She received the Governor's RSVP volunteer award for her work with the Nora Spring-Rock Falls School System in 1993. She was quoted as saying "I just like doing things!"

She was a devoted grandmother and teacher to many and spent many hours knitting, crocheting afghans and dishcloths as well as sewing clothes for her family and self. She also enjoyed reading biography and history books. During the active years with her family she helped her husband remodel their house and working on the farm.

Those thankful in sharing LaVon's life are her husband of 54 years, Albert "Whitey" Schultz, Rockford; her eight children, daughters Virginia "Ginny" Brown, of Osage, Peggy and her husband Roger Cheney, of Indianola, Iowa, sons Virgil and Claudia "Lewis" Brown, of Concord, N.C., Larry Schultz, of Waverly, Dan and Susan Schultz, of Stillwater, Minn., Mark and Beth Schultz, of Gales Ferry, Conn., Duane and Jane Schultz, of Iowa Falls, Benny and Valerie Schultz, of Des Moines; 22 grandchildren, Tony and John Stonecypher, Rhea Bender, Rhonda Brogher, Tom and Kevin Lewis, Wendy Brown, Nikki Johnson, Lance and Lorin Schultz, Tyler and Cale Schultz, Matthew, Becky, Ted and Mary Schultz, Eric and Megan Schultz, Heather and Brent Hanson, Joshua and Caleb Schultz; 13 great-grandchildren; and one surviving brother, Norbert and his wife, Mary Jane Schrage, of Marian, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her first husband; four sisters, Frieda Schrage, in infancy, Frieda Hildebrand, Caroline McLellan, and Augusta "Toots" Smedley; eight brothers, Earnest, Ferdinand, Christopher, Paul, Silas, Eldo, August and Sylvan Schrage; and one grandson, Doug.

CHARLES CITY - Clifford Brown, 89, a resident of 1100 Hildreth Street, Charles City, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

Clifford Anson Brown was born Oct. 12, 1913, in Humbolt, the fourth child of Wesley and Cora (Hill) Brown. He grew up and attended school in the Orchard area, and worked as a farmhand. On April 23, 1932, he was united in marriage to Merna Ritter. Three children, Betty, Keith, and Garry were born to this union. Clifford lived and worked in the Mitchell and Floyd counties all his life, working as a farm hand in his early years, then as a mechanic, carpenter and retiring as an electrician for Salsbury Laboratories. In his years after retirement he received great pleasure working with his hobby of repairing clocks. Clifford was a long time member of Bethany Alliance Church, where in years past he served in many positions in the church. He loved eating his evening meal with his close friend Jean at the Back Door Restaurant where he was lovingly called "Wildman."

Living family members include his daughter, Betty (David) Holtz of Charles City; a son, Garry (Carol) Brown of Charles City; grandchildren, Deb and Bob Hocking, Laura and Jonathan Jones, Gina and Scott Phearman, Angie and Craig Sinnwell, Kelly and John Powell, Shawna and Kevin Davis; great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Allison, and Emily Hocking, Ellyn, Alex and Anna Phearman, Dalton and Jadyn Schutjer, Elliott Sinnwell, Brooke and Louis Powell, and Orion and Alexis Davis; close friend Jean Fisher; and life long friend and first cousin Howard Barrett.

RICEVILLE - Merlyn Leroy Vote, 72, of Riceville, passed away Monday (Feb. 3, 2003) at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Merlyn was born on Nov. 27, 1930, in Pocahontas County, to Clarence Guy Vote and Evelyn Edith Erickson Vote. He attended school in Pocahontas and Burnside and graduated from Riceville High School.

Merlyn was united in marriage to Arlys Moses on Dec. 8, 1951, at the Riceville United Methodist Church.

Merlyn served his country as a soldier in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953. After returning home, Merlyn worked for the Farmers Telephone Company and was a partner with Kenneth Hammerstrom operating H &V Electric in Riceville.

He and Arlys moved to their present home in August of 1962 and Merlyn began farming. Merlyn retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986. He also operated the Riceville Bowling Alley from 1968 to 1978.

Merlyn is survived by his wife, Arlys, of Riceville; one son, David L. Vote, of St. Ansgar; and one daughter, Lisa and her husband, Darryl Hunt and their two children, Tanner and Ashley Hunt, of Ackley. Also surviving are a sister, Ann Padget and her husband, John, of Waterloo; two brothers, Bernard and his wife, Mary Ann, of Riceville, and Roger and his wife, Mary Lou, of Riceville; and two sisters-in-law, Louise Vote, of Omaha, Neb. and Margaret Vote, of Riceville; and many nieces and nephews.

Marlys Marie Bucheister Mitchell was born Jan. 11, 1939, at Hanlontown, the daughter of Cecil and Pauline (Messier) Bucheister. She graduated from Rudd High School in 1957 and received her associate degree from Mason City Junior College.

On July 9, 1961, she was united in marriage to Jim Mitchell. They resided in the Charles City area and Marlys became an active volunteer in the community.

She was a charter member of the Messiah Lutheran Church and had served in various capacities. Marlys was the past director of the Floyd County Volunteers for many years.

She was a volunteer at heart as seen in her participation with 4-H as an honorary member, leader, 4-H committee member, serving on the school board, and was a member of the Farm Bureau Women, and Porkettes.

Her special joy was the time she would spend with her family.

Living family members include her husband, Jim, of Charles City; four children, Becky (Darwin) Becker of Charles City, Tim Mitchell of La Porte City, Jerry (Laura) Mitchell, and Richard Mitchell both of Charles City; grandchildren, Chris and Christy, Joe, and Josh Becker, Tyler, Zach, Drew, and Sarah Mitchell; her mother, Pauline Bucheister of Charles City; and a brother, Raymond (Patt) Bucheister of Italy.

Her father preceded her in death.

SCARVILLE - Funeral services for Michael S. Langerud, 28, of Scarville will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with the Rev. Kevin Mackey officiating. Burial will be at Salem Memorial Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E Main in Lake Mills, and again one hour before services at the church.

Michael Standford Langerud was born on Sept. 29, 1974, to Ernest and Susan (Bradley) Langerud, at Naeve Hospital in Albert Lea, Minn. He was baptized at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. He graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1993.

While in High School he enjoyed FFA and Agriculture. He attended NIACC and received a Certificate in Welding.

Following graduation he was self-employed as a farmer, working side-by-side with his father. He also worked two winters for Rognes Brothers Excavating. He spent much of his free time doing jobs for other people, such as rebuilding motors for tractors, trucks and cars, and also body work on vehicles.

His hobbies included tractor pulls with his Farmall Super M, where he won many trophies over the past three years. He also enjoyed repairing and rebuilding all of his farm equipment, including his tractors, trucks, pickups and cars. He was proud to be part of the Scarville Fire Department, which he joined recently.

Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and playing with his nephews, Spencer and Nathan. Mike was a friend to everyone he met, and to know him was to like him.

Mike passed away Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) as the result of a motor vehicle accident near Scarville.

Mike left behind his parents, Ernest and Susan Langerud of Leland; his sister, Mindy and her husband, Tracy Farland, and their children, Spencer and Nathan, of Mason City; his grandmother, June Bradley of Gig Harbor, Wash. Mike also left behind aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, Maynard and Ruth (Arnevik) Langerud; his maternal grandfather, Robert Bradley; and his uncle, Duane Langerud.

CYRUS 'CY' RENSHAW

MASON CITY - Cyrus "Cy" Renshaw, 92, of Mason City, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Eldon Jandebeur officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa.

Cy was born on Dec. 5, 1910, the son of Frank and Helen (Scott) Renshaw on the family's homestead in rural Whitney, S. D. He lived most of his life on the Renshaw family farm in Owens Grove, southeast of Mason City.

Cy attended rural school with his mother as his teacher, and he graduated from Mason City High School, Class of 1928. He then attended Mason City Junior College for one year and in 2002 Cy received an Honorary Associate Degree from NIACC.

On Aug. 30, 1936, Cy was united in marriage to Gladys Rose Winchell at the Presbyterian Church in Lakota, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple lived in Lakota where Gladys was the chief telephone operator, while Cy worked at the Deitering's Garage in Bancroft for two years.

Over the course of the next 30 years, Cy worked for a variety of auto-body repair shops, including Delaware Auto Body, which he owned and operated. In 1948 Cy built Mason City's first bookmobile for the Mason City Public Library.

After leaving the auto-body business Cy worked for Sunray DX Oil Co. and Hedrick Brothers Paper Co. He then worked for over 15 years in security and auto-parts for NIACC.

At the age of 80, Cy retired and began his career as an volunteer disc jockey for KCMR Radio. He wrote and produced over 160 shows of "Center Stage," a program featuring music from Broadway and movies.

He was a charter member of the SPEBSQA's River City Chorus.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to everyone from Hospice of North Iowa and the I.O.O.F. Home for the excellent care that Cy received.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Gladys Renshaw of Mason City; daughter, Nancy Merchant of Burnsville, Minn.; son, Frank Renshaw and wife, Sharon, of Cherry Hill, N.J.; granddaughters, Jennifer Renshaw, of Boston, Mass., Melinda Renshaw of Atlanta, Ga., Kristina Merchant of Rochester, Minn., and Vanessa Merchant, of St. Paul, Minn.; sister-in-law, Verna Vrchota and husband, Curtis, of Mason City; cousins, Hazel Connery of Gilroy, Calif., Ruth Hardigan of Texas, James Renshaw and Iona, of Rock Falls, and Helen O'Heron of Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant grandsons, Jeffrey Allan and Brian Carl Renshaw; and cousins, Doris Cormey and Ruth Renshaw.

FREDDIE TIESKE

MASON CITY - Freddie Tieske, 82, of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Scott Duffus of St. James Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home.

Freddie was born on Jan. 21, 1921, the son of Fred A. and Gelena (Tollefson) Tieske, in Mason City. He attended Mason City Public Schools and was a lifelong Mason City resident.

His passions in life included collecting antiques, tinkering with stuff, attending local and state fairs, and especially marveling over carnivals. As his mother's health deteriorated in her latter years, Freddie made sure that he was there to support her and care for her.

Those thankful for having shared in Freddie's life include his sister, Mildred Weaver; four nieces; one great-niece; three great-nephews; one great-great-niece; and two great-great-nephews; and a special friend, Cheryl Johnson.

DALE H. CASSMAN

GREENE - Funeral services for Dale H. Cassmann, 71, of 415 N. Second St. in Greene, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, with a Scripture service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services today at the church.

Dale Henry Cassmann was born Dec. 14, 1931 in Union Township, Floyd County, a son of Peter and Ella Mae Cassmann. He died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

He received his education in the rural Coldwater Township Schools and later the Greene Public School. He was baptized on May 24,1942 and confirmed a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene on April 3, 1949.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn Mae Berk on Nov. 24, 1950, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene.

As a young man he worked on the family farm and later for his uncle, Peter Smoot, in Allison. Dale worked for area farmers until he began working for the International Implement and later the John Deere Implement, both in Greene, until his retirement in 1987.

Dale's interests included collecting toy farm tractors, playing marbles and cards, but most of all he loved woodworking in his garage and spending time with his grandchildren.

Living family members include his loving wife, Kathryn, of Greene; their children, Dennis (Merlette) Cassmann, of Bristow, Douglas Cassmann, of Osage, Bruce (Janet) Cassmann, of Rockford, and Brenda (Gary) Geuther, of Waverly; eight grandchildren, Michelle, Cody, Melinda, and Christopher Cassmann, of Rockford, Terence and Tiffany Cassmann, of Bristow, Lisa and Jennifer Geuther, of Waverly; two brothers, Gordon (Tillie) Cassmann, of Aplington, and Melvin Cassman and his friend, Eileen Furstenburg, of Clarksville; two sisters, Mable (Elvin) Rover, of Greene, and Eunice (Fred) Bolhuis, of Aplington; his aunt and uncle, Claus and Janet Johnson, of Wycoff, Minn.; aunt, Ruth Sonksen, of Grundy Center; aunt, Alice Johnson, of Allison; and aunt, Rosie Johnson, of Waterloo; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Orville Whited; and several aunts and uncles.

FLORENCE FITZGERALD

NEW HAMPTON - Florence Fitzgerald, 88, of New Hampton, died Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of natural causes.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center in New Hampton. Burial will be in the Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in rural Elma.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Conway-Kolbet Funeral Home in New Hampton. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Mercy Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary in New Hampton or Hospice of North Iowa, Charles City Satellite.

Florence Fitzgerald was born July 20, 1914, near Elma, the daughter of Joseph and Marie C. (Lensing) Freidhof. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School in Lourdes and went on to graduate from the New Hampton High School in 1932.

After high school Florence taught country school in Chickasaw and Howard Counties, as well as CCD at Our Lady of Lourdes.

On May 26, 1936, Florence was united in marriage to Raymond Fitzgerald at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Following their marriage, the couple resided on a farm near Lourdes, where she stayed until Raymond's death on Aug. 17, 1972. In 1973 she moved to New Hampton where she resided ever since. While living in New Hampton, Florence was a caretaker for several families.

She was a member of the Holy Family Parish; A.C.C.W., an organization she was very active in and served as an officer; Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Joan of Arc No. 388; Rosary Society; and the Mercy Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary in New Hampton.

Florence enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, cooking, baking and gardening.

Florence is survived by nine children, Pat (Leo) Rasmussen, of Leawood, Kans., Eugene (Kathy) Fitzgerald, of Stuart, Iowa, Margaret (Rich) TeKippe, of New Hampton, Paul (Marge) Fitzgerald, of Forest City, Jack (Jayne) Fitzgerald, of Waterloo, Diane (Tom) Gansen, of New Hampton, Denise (Tom) Pyfferoen, of Rochester, Minn., Dennis (Mary Jo) Fitzgerald, of Elma, Michael (Pat) Fitzgerald, of Tulsa, Okla.; 45 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; three brothers, James Friedhoff, of Elma, Gene (Gert) Freidhof, of Elma, and Ray (Alice) Freidhof, of Waterloo; a sister, Marie Catherine (Francis) Deutsch of New Hampton; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special family friend, LaVern Roths, of New Hampton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond Fitzgerald (Aug. 17, 1972); two brothers, Vincent and John Freidhof; and a grandson, Joseph, in infancy.

FLOYD L. ARMSTRONG

WESLEY - Floyd L. Armstrong, 81, of Wesley, passed away Sunday (Feb. 2, 2003) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Floyd L. Armstrong will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Corwith, with Pastor Dan Fernandez officiating. Burial will be in Corwith Cemetery in Corwith, with military graveside services conducted by the Corwith American Legion.

Floyd Linheart Armstrong, the son of Charles and Alma Ida (Riley) Armstrong, was born Jan. 11, 1922, in Lone Rock. Floyd was raised in the Livermore area and graduated from Livermore High School.

He enjoyed helping his family on the farm, where he got his first taste of truck driving. Floyd went into the service and proudly served under General Patton during World War II. Following his discharge Floyd returned to the Livermore area.

On Nov. 18, 1947, Floyd was united in marriage with Dorothy Fish. The couple later moved to Wesley, where they raised their four children, Melvin "Nick", Calvin, Debra, and Larry. Floyd continued to reside in Wesley until the time of his death.

Floyd drove dump trucks and cement trucks for over 40 years. The last was for Peck Ready Mix and Croft Ready Mix of Algona. He loved driving trucks, but one thing he loved more was fishing. He and Dorothy spent many days by lakes fishing. He passed his love for fishing on to his children and grandchildren, especially Cody, Melony, and Matthew.

Floyd was a member of the Corwith America Legion and Algona V.F.W.

Those left to cherish his memory include his three sons, Melvin "Nick" Armstrong, of Corwith, Calvin Armstrong and his wife, Vila, of Algona, Larry Armstrong and his wife, Julie, of Wesley; one daughter, Debra McDermott and her husband, Kevin, of Britt; eight grandchildren, Calvin Armstrong Jr., JoAnne Armstrong, Amanda Armstrong, Lacy Armstrong, Cody Armstrong, Brandy Armstrong, Melony McDermott and Matthew McDermott; one brother, Donald "Dutch" Armstrong, and his wife, Tootie, of Arizona; and two sisters-in-law, Vera Fish, of Corwith and Allie Fish, of Algona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; grandson, Kevin Armstrong; and two brothers, Earl and Milton Armstrong.
