DENNIS P. LOVICK

FOREST CITY - Dennis P. Lovick,49, of Forest City, died Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Dennis Paul Lovick was born July 3, 1953, in Mason City, to Paul and Gladys (Fluhrer) Lovick. In high school Dennis was active in band, sports and FFA.

As a sophomore in high school, Dennis was named an FFA delegate to the national convention in Washington, D.C. His family joined him on that trip - one of the few family vacations they ever took. He stayed involved in FFA his entire life, first as a member, then later as judge on the state level.

Dennis graduated from Forest City High School in 1971. He attended ISU for one year, studying agriculture. He then joined his father on the family farm until his father's death in 1983. During this time he also sold Jacques seed corn and sent his parents on several vacations, paid for out of the earnings from those sales.

Dennis was also interested in farm conservation, and joined the local Pheasants Forever Chapter. He was very proud that his chapter was consistently one of the top contributors to Pheasants Forever.

When Dennis quit actively farming, he joined Ertz & Associates in Lake Mills, selling crop insurance. Dennis was very involved in high school sports as a player and also as a fan.

He enjoyed all sports, but his favorite was basketball. For the past 34 years he served as scorekeeper for the Forest City High School basketball teams; an achievement in which he took great pride. He was also very involved behind the scenes of Forest City sports.

He joined the Forest City Sports Boosters and helped raise money for the weight room and the softball concession stand, as well as many other projects for the school.

In 1979 Dennis joined the Forest City Breakfast Lions Club. For the next 24 years he held every office in his club. He was especially proud of being named District Governor in 1999.

He was also a member of the Lions Pin Trading Club. Through Lions he met many wonderful people throughout the world. In 2000, he accepted the position of Sceening Coordinator with the Iowa Lions Foundation.

He drove his customized Winnebago motor home throughout the state, offering free medical testing. He felt it wasn't the number of people tested in a day, but the number of people helped that made the difference.

Throughout his life he received many awards for his work. He was an FFA Green Hand, a Pheasants Forever Major Sponsor, a No. 1 Sports Fan, inducted into the FCHS Education Hall of Fame, Outstanding Lion, Lion of the Year and recipient of the Warren Coleman Award for excellence in service.

People who didn't know Dennis only saw a big man. But people who took the time to know him found a big man with an even bigger heart.

Left to mourn is his sister, Barb Lovick, of Forest City; many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, co-workers and special friend, Donna Schweighauser, of Rolla, Mo.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Dennis Lovick Memorial Fund.
