CLEAR LAKE - Ada M. Hughes, 87, of Clear Lake died Thursday (July 19, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Inurnment will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday in the Belmond Cemetery in Belmond.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

There will be no visitation, as it was Ada's wish to be cremated.

KANAWHA - Cecil Louise Larson, 96, of Kanawha died Thursday (July 19, 2001) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

ELK HORN - Rose Forde, 87, of Elk Horn died Monday (July 16, 2001) at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 19, at Elk Horn Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Williams and Celeste Waymire, AIM, officiating.

DONALD H. MORETZ

NORTHWOOD - Donald H. Moretz, 57, of Northwood, died Thursday (July 19, 2001) at his home in rural Northwood.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will take place at Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S., Northwood, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Donald H. Moretz was born Dec. 30, 1943, in Northwood to Guy and Myrtle (Brunsvold) Moretz. Donald was baptized and confirmed at the Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church in Glenville, Minn. He graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School in 1961.

Donald was united in marriage to Jo Tenold in January of 1966.

He farmed near Northwood until 1992. He drove a school bus for the Northwood-Kensett School System. In recent years he had worked for the Worth County Road Maintenance.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Northwood. He served on the Worth County Fair Board. His greatest enjoyment and love was his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Jo, of Northwood; children, Kim Julson, of Northwood, Jeff Moretz, of Northwood, and Brian Moretz and his wife, Melaine, of Waukee; grandchildren, Tyler, Hunter, Hannah and Olivia; brothers and sisters, Lillian Eskildsen, of Loyal, Wis., Russell Moretz and his wife, Irene, of Kensett, Marge Low and her husband, Rick, of Northwood, Art Moretz and his wife, Sharon, of Northwood, Wayne Moretz and his wife, Cindy, of Bozeman, Mont., Allan Moretz, of Kensett, Anna Clayton and her husband, Dan, of Austin, Minn., and Richard Moretz and his wife, Sandy, of Medford, Wis.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bob and Marge Hengesteg; and mother-in-law, Arlene Tenold.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, stepmother, Ina Moretz; son-in-law, Steve Julson; and father-in-law, Marvin Tenold.

SHAD NICHOLAS ARISPE JR.

OWATONNA, Minn. - Shad Nicholas Arispe Jr., infant son of Casey Boyd and Shad Arispe, was stillborn on Thursday (July 19, 2001) at the Owatonna Hospital.

A private memorial service will be held on Monday at Michaelson Funeral Home in Owatonna, Minn., with Dr. Ronald D. Wilson of The Associated Church officiating.

Memorials are preferred to the family.

NIKI FARMAKIS SKODON

FRESNO, Calif. - Niki Farmakis Skodon passed away on June 7, 2001, in her home in Fresno, Calif.

Born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, Niki Farmakis Skodon graduated from Mason City High School, then graduated from the University of Iowa where she majored in English and Journalism and was campus editor of the Daily Iowan. She taught English and Journalism at Eagle Grove and Sheldon, Iowa.

Shortly after she went on to Chicago where she became editor of National Electronics Distributors Association and thereafter went to American Trade Publications where she met her late husband, Michael J. Skodon, and was the advertising and sales manager.

She joined her husband in creating their own publishing company, The Spaulding Press, in Chicago. Niki also worked for The Greek Press in Chicago as a columnist for a number of years under the heading "Over The Cup." Many of her articles appeared in The Chicago Tribune and Cosmopolitan Magazine.

Funeral services were held on June 13 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Fresno, with Father James Pappas officiating.

Survivors include three sisters, Dr. Marina Kennedy Cobb, Mrs. Eveln Nicholas Boosalis and Mari Farmakis, all of Fresno, Calif.; Dr. Nicholas Boosalis, brother-in-law, of Fresno, Mrs. Peter Farmakis, of Chicago; nephews, Constantine Boosalis and his wife, Vicki, of Porterville, Calif., James Boosalis, of San Jose, David Boosalis, of Palo Alto, Matthew Boosalis, of San Francisco; and grand nephews, Nicholas Boosalis, Cody Boosalis and Casey Boosalis, of Porterville, Calif.

MARION LARSON

OSAGE - Marion Larson, 83, of Osage, died Thursday (July 19, 2001) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. Marion was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Adams, Minn., to Roy and Clara (King) Baldner. She graduated from Austin High School.

Marion was united in marriage to Lynn "Bud" Larson on Oct. 7, 1939, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Austin, Minn. After Bud's military service they located in Osage. She was employed as a clerk at Montgomery Wards and Sears. She was Deputy County Auditor in Mitchell County for years.

Marion was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Osage American Legion Auxiliary.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Denny Hanson officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour before services at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn "Bud" Larson; two daughters, Barbara Brooker and her husband, Alan, of Eagan, Minn., and their children, Carrie and Jeffrey Brooker; and Beverly Larson of Mason City and her children, Mikan and Lyndsay Walrod; seven sisters, Marcella Meeker and her husband, Myron, of Austin, Minn., Dorothy Swenson, of Austin, Minn., Shirley Wherry and her husband, Darrell "Mick" of Osage, Darlene Trimble and her husband, Harold, of Austin, Minn., Janice Christiansen and her husband, Jim, of Austin, Minn., and Diane Haseth and Jewell Weeks, both of Austin, Minn.; and two brothers, Donald Baldner, of Lubbock, Texas, and John Baldner and his wife, Linda, of Tempe, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Carol.

MARIE KALLAS

MASON CITY - Marie Kallas, 91, Mason City, died Thursday (July 19, 2001) at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation was held on Friday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with a public Scripture wake service.

Marie Kallas was born on Aug. 21, 1909, in Frindola, Italy, the daughter of Antonio and Louise (Buccella) Marroni. Marie moved from Italy to Mason City in 1920 with her family, and attended McKinley School in Mason City.

She was united in marriage to William Kallas on Dec. 3, 1927, and their union was blessed with two sons, George and Tony. Her husband preceded her in death in 1969.

Marie worked for Jacob E. Decker Meat Co. in Mason City for 32 years.

Marie loved her home and garden, spending many hours tending her vegetables and flowers, and enjoyed visiting with neighbors and friends. She was a very loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who devoted her life to her family.

Those who remain to cherish her memory include her son, Tony Kallas and his special friend, Berneil Preul, of Ida Grove, daughter-in-law, Marjorie Kallas, of Mason City; three sisters, Lucy Bilyeu and Angeline Melby, both of Mason City, and Lorraine McCollough and her husband, Dean, of Clarion; one brother, Gabe and his wife, Pat, Marroni, of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Red Johnson, of Mason City; a special friend, Pat Paulsen, of Mapleton; seven grandchildren, Monte, William "Bill", Chris and Steve Kallas, Joy Summers, Jill Bartelle and Becky Johnson; nine great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including special niece, Patty Meints and husband, Ivan of Thornton; also grateful for having shared her life are many relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, George; four sisters, Nancy Cuppuzzi, Jenny Graham, Mary Johnson and Yolanda Nashiem; a brother, Woody Marroni; and a baby sister, Rose.

The family of Marie Kallas would like to say a special thank you to Patty Meints for her special loving care she gave to Marie so she could remain in her home for as long as she did.

ROE H. ROOF

MASON CITY -Roe H. Roof, 74, of 624 N. Tyler, Mason City died Friday (July 13, 2001) at the University Medical Center in Tucson, Ariz.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City.

Roe Hill Roof was born in Leon, Iowa, on February 17, 1927. a son of Roy and Florence (Hill) Roof. He was inducted into the United States Army and served during World War II in occupied Germany.

Roe settled in Mason City, 44 years ago, where he owned and operated Roof Oil Co. and was a former partner in the Stein Inn and KFC Restaurants.

He was a member of the Elks Lodge, VFW Post #733, American Legion Post #101, Benevolence Lodge, Mason City York Rite, and the El Kahir Shrine Temple of Cedar Rapids. Roe was a former member of the North Iowa Shrine Clown Unit, and served on the board of directors for the Iowa Oil Jobbers Association and the Iowa Restaurant Association.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Carlene, of Mason City; one daughter, Jan and her husband, Steve Welander, of Tucson, Ariz; three sons, Richard and his wife, Judy Roof, of Des Moines, Ron and his wife, Marilyn Roof, of Algona, and Rob and his wife, Patty Roof, of Mason City; nine grandchildren, Christina Kingery, Betsy Cline and Robby Ann Roof ,of Mason City, Ryan and Ray Roof, of Algona, Cam and his wife, Shelley Welander, of Los Angeles, Brett and Curt Welander, of Tucson and Chad Welander, of Columbus, Ga.; six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Robert and his wife, Coleen Roof, of Cedar Rapids.

KANAWHA - Cecil Louise Larson, 96, of Kanawha, passed away Thursday (July 19, 2001) at the Kanawha Community Home.

Funeral services for Cecil Larson will be held Monday, July 23, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with the Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Visitation will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.

Cecil Louise, the daughter of Jackson and Mrytle Parr Wilkinson was born Jan. 8, 1905, in Ellsworth, Ill. As a young girl of twelve she moved with her family to LuVerne, Iowa. She was educated in the Ellsworth, Illinois school and LuVerne High School.

She was united in marriage to John Harold Larson on May 2, 1921, in Goldfield, Iowa. The couple farmed for forty-six years on the same farm in the Kanawha area.

Cecil worked for eighteen years in a dry goods store in Kanawha. She enjoyed bowling, her garden, flowers, and canning. She was a member of the Kanawha Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1945.

Cecil is survived by her daughter, Virginia Christenson, of Humboldt; son, John and wife Margaret, of Kanawha; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pearl Wilkinson, of Kanawha and Wilma Wilkinson of Oceanside, California; and and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son Gene and daughter-in-law Gladys, son-in-law Robert H. Christenson, grandson John, great-great granddaughter Hope, two brothers Ben and Burnham, two half sisters, two half brothers, and one foster brother, and two sisters, Mary and Velda.

Ada M. (Shahan) Hughes was born on Feb. 2, 1914, rural Belmond, Iowa, the daughter of Lee and Mary (Carter) Shahan. She attended and received her education in the rural country schools at Belmond Township School District #4.

On Nov. 24, 1934, Ada was united in marriage with Weston D. Hughes in Clarion, Iowa. The couple made their home in the rural Belmond area.

The couple was blessed with eleven children. On June 16, 1944, Ada was baptized at the Goodell United Methodist Church in Goodell, Iowa. Ada spent most of her lifetime being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She was a cook at Jim's Tap in Clear Lake, and in more recent years, Ada worked at Olaf T. Hansen's in Clear Lake until her retirement in March of 1984. She enjoyed reading, doing word games, and traveling, but her great love and enjoyment was spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include ten children, Lee W. Hughes ,of Clear Lake, Gary D. Hughes and his, wife, Jo, of Peoria, Ariz, Barbara K. Pals, of Shakopee, Minn., Lyle H. Hughes and his wife, Margaret, of Marion, Virginia E. Mennenga, of Hubbard, Linda C. Helland and her husband, Gene, of Storm Lake, Darwin R. Hughes and his wife, Joanne, of Woodbury, Minn., Keith L. Hughes and his wife, Suzette, of Trusdale, Paul K. Hughes and his wife, Judy, of Parkersburg, and Rebecca J. Frerichs and her husband, Steven, of Steamboat Rock; 27 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; one brother, Orville Shahan and his wife, Micky, of Mesa, Ariz; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Shahan of Colstrip, Mont., Gladys Pals, of Belmond, Irene Shahan, of Mason City, and Ardie Shahan; brother-in-law, Pete Pals, of Belmond; and many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Phyllis Hughes of Clear Lake.

OTTUMWA - Susan Marie Stinehart Davidson, 45, of Ottumwa, formerly of Clear Lake, died Thursday (July 19, 2001) because of complications of diabetes and pneumonia, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery

Susan was born on Nov. 6, 1955, at Strawberry Point. When she was three months old, she was lovingly adopted by Orville and Dolores (Schloemer) Stinehart. Susan was raised in Clear Lake, where she attended school and graduated in 1975. She spent most of her lifetime as a homemaker, taking care of her children. Susan enjoyed animals, especially dogs, and she loved to spend her free time talking with her friends.

Survivors include her children, Jason Allen and his fiancée, Amanda, of Des Moines, Ed Allen and his wife, Melissa, of West Des Moines, and Brian Allen and his wife, Bonita, of Ottumwa; three grandchildren, Melody and Mercedes Allen, of Des Moines and Madison Allen of West Des Moines; two sisters, Nancy Holman and her husband, Bob, of Clear Lake and Sally Johnson and her husband, Mark, of Clear Lake; two nephews, Robert and Jameson Deckard, of Clear Lake; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Orville Stinehart on Sept. 17, 2000, and Dolores Stinehart on Dec. 20, 2000; husband, Jim Davidson; and an infant son.

HELEN QUINN ROSELAND

MASON CITY - Helen Quinn Roseland, 91, Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Friday (July 20, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake. According to her wishes her body was cremated.

The family of Helen Quinn Roseland has requested that memorial contributions be made in memory of Helen Quinn Roseland.

Helen Quinn Roseland was born on Feb. 27, 1910, in St. Louis, to Jack and Lovie (Quinn) Keraghan.

In 1925, she was united in marriage to L.A. Hertel, in St. Louis. From this union came two children, Lorraine A. and Jean. They later divorced, and in 1945 she was married to Charles Roseland After they married they moved to Paulina, where they owned and operated Lang's Café. In 1947 they moved from Paulina to Clear Lake, where they were blessed with the birth of their son, Charles Lee. There, her husband was a pharmacist for Rexall Drug Store, while Helen made deliveries for both Rexall Drug and The Corner Drug Store. She was also very proud of the fact that at the age of 64 she earned her GED.

Helen enjoyed the simple things in life. She played cards at the Lakeland Apartments in Clear Lake, especially 500, and enjoyed cooking, dancing and crossword puzzles. Her greatest love and what brought her the most enjoyment in her life, however, was her family and grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, L.A. Hertel and his wife Colleen, of Forsythe, Mo., Jean Larson, of Mason City, and Charles Roseland, of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren and their families, David Larson of Mason City and his children, Jerod, Kaylin, Lindy and her daughter Allison, who was Helen's only great-great grandchild, all of Minneapolis, Minn.; Jane Shultz and her husband, Joe, of Mason City, and their children, Andy who is stationed at Camp Howse, Korea, and Megan and Michael, at home in Mason City; Jill Symonds and her husband, Gerald, of Rockwell, and their children, Elizabeth of Mason City, Quinn, William and Tony, at home in Rockwell, and Charlie Roseland and Claire Roseland both of Dallas, Texas; a brother, Jim Keraghan of Woodriver, Ill.; as well as other relatives, including Rita Stansberry and Terry and Virginia Lancey and her many friends that she made over the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; and two sisters.

OSAGE - Stanley Lester Krones, 66, of Osage, died Saturday (July 21, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Stanley Lester Krones was born March 13, 1935, in Osage, the son of Lester and Katherine (Rodemaker) Krones. He graduated from Osage High School in 1954.

Stanley was united in marriage to Phyllis McKee on Sept. 7, 1957, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Osage. He owned and operated Stan's Repair, repairing tractors, trucks and farm machinery. He was a mechanic's mechanic who could fix or build anything. In 1974 he went to work for the Osage Municipal Utilities, retiring in 1998. Stanley was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a longtime member of Mitchell County Conservation Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, custom sawing and woodworking. He loved being with his family and especially his granddaughters.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Krones, of Osage; one daughter, Lisa Eichmeier and her husband, Kevin, and children, Stephanie and Lindsey, of Osage; two sons, Duane and his wife, Lisa, and their daughters, Alicia and Samantha, of River Falls, Wis.; Gary and his wife, Ruth, and their children, Mackenzie, Teri and Kaitlyn, of Osage; one sister, Sandra Heckstein and her husband, Vernon, of Osage; and one brother, David Krones and his wife, Ginnie, of Hanover, Minn.

Lucille was born May 2, 1912, in Chaska, Minn., the daughter of William and Rose (Paschka) Tiedeman. At the age of 7, she moved to Mason City, where she attended school.

She married Robert W. Montgomery March 1, 1933, in Sioux Falls, S.D. For most of her life Lucille was a homemaker. She did work as a switchboard operator at the Cerro Gordo County Courthouse for seven years, retiring in 1974.

Survivors include four sons and one daughter, Bob L. Montgomery and wife, Rita, of Sun City, Ariz., Charles W. Montgomery, of Mason City, Douglas J. MIRIAM MARCELLA DRURY VROMAN

VIRGINIA, Minn. - Miriam Marcella Vroman, 89, died Thursday (July 19, 2001) at the Arrowhead Senior Living Community in Virginia, Minn.

She was born Jan. 28, 1912, in Popejoy, Franklin County, Iowa, to Almon and Flossie (Stewart) Drury. She was raised in Dows, graduating high school in Dows and then graduating from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing.

She had post-graduate training in psychiatric nursing at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and at Washington State University. She was employed at Washington State Psychiatric Hospital as the head of the surgical department.

She married Eldon Harold Vroman on May 11, 1935, in Coupeville, Wash. They continued working in Washington State until the start of World War II, when they moved to Texas. They later settled in Dows, where she served her family and others.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Dows.

After her children were raised, she went to work as Wright County Public Health Nurse. During retirement, she and Eldon spent the winters in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the summers at Lake Cornelia, Clarion, Iowa.

She is survived by her two daughters, Katherine (Jared) Cohen, of Virginia, Minn., and Marsha (Russell) Mott, of Clear Lake; five grandchildren, Nathaniel (Mary) Greenwood, of Monticello, Minn., Jedediah (Laurie) Greenwood, of Minneapolis, Minn., Honora (Cory) Thorson, of West St. Paul, Minn., Adam Mott, of Detroit, Mich., and Andrew Mott, of Clear Lake; three great-granddaughters; and one sister, Judy (Bill) Harris, of Iowa Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon Vroman; her parents, and one sister.

ELK HORN - Rose Forde, 87, of Elk Horn and formerly of Northwood, died Monday (July 16, 2001) at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 19, at Elk Horn Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Williams and Celeste Waymire, AIM, officiating.

Funeral services were held on Friday, July 20, at the First Shell Rock Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Alfred Merseth and the Rev. Karl Hermanson, officiating.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, July 18 at the Ohde Funeral Home in Kimballton.

Rose, daughter of Oscar and Alvina (Anderson) Bergo, was born Nov. 8, 1913, in Worth County. She attended country school near her home and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church near Emmons, Minn. Following her schooling, Rose helped her parents on the farm.

On May 3, 1930, Rose was united in marriage with Selmer J. Forde. Six children were born to this union. Rose and Selmer farmed near Northwood for 12 years. They then lived in several places throughout Iowa while Selmer worked in the construction business.

The family finally settled in rural Elk Horn, where Rose worked at Elk Horn Produce. In 1982, the couple moved into Elk Horn. After Selmer's death in 1986, Rose continued to live alone until entering Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn on May 18, 2001. She died there July 16, 2001, at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 8 days.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Jerry Forde; grandson, Scott Forde; and stepgreat-grandson, Austin Forde; and son-in-law, Kenneth Nelson.

Frances was born April 6, 1907, the daughter of Solomon J. and Evalena (Ferner) Ott in Clear Lake, Iowa. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1925 and continued her education at Hamilton Business College in Mason City and graduated in March 1926.

On June 25, 1926, she was married to Willis E. Miller. To this union three children were born, Charles W., Marjorie Joan and Larry A.

In 1930 she was elected to the position of Treasurer of the Methodist Church and continued in this position except for two years while living away from Clear Lake.

After the death of her husband in 1949, she worked in the Treasurer's Office at the County Courthouse and also was in business until 1956 when she became the full time Secretary-Treasurer of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. This position she held until her retirement on June 15, 1984.

She was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a Past Matron of Park Chapter No. 35, Order of Easter Star; Past Regent of Clear lake Chapter Daughters of American Revolution; and Past President of the Clear Lake Wa-Tan-Ye Club.

She is survived by one son, Larry A. Miller and his wife, Norma, of Fort Madison, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Mona Cooper, of Nora Springs, Iowa; five grandchildren, Bradley Miller, of Albia, Iowa, Barbara Quam and her husband, Tim, of Nora Springs, Iowa, Bryan Miller and his wife, Jeanine, of Nora Springs, Cristi Prenger, of Quincy, Ill., Stephanie Knoch and her husband, Fred, of Fort Madison, Iowa. There are also eight great grandchildren. Also many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter, Marjorie Joan Miller, son Charles W. Miller, two brothers Ralph and Harlan Ott and one sister Ruth (Edmond) Lincicum.

CLARION - Betty Jean Loomis, 80, of Clarion, died Monday (July 23, 2001) at USA Healthcare Center in Clarion.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the United Methodist Church in Clarion, with the Rev. LaVonne Kaasa officiating. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the church.

ALICE VANGERPEN

BUFFALO CENTER - The funeral for Alice VanGerpen, 89, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center, with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Interment will be in Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W. in Buffalo Center.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to the First Reformed Church.

Alice VanGerpen was born Jan. 27, 1912, to Jasper and Jennie (Heerkes) Burma, near Rake. She received her education at Buffalo Center Community School.

Alice was united in marriage to Henry VanGerpen on Nov. 20, 1928, at Garner. The young couple began farming in 1929 near Buffalo Center. In 1951, they moved to the neighborhood where Alice was born, and began farming at the "Sandum place" east of Rake. They lived there until they retired from farming in 1970. Since that time they have made their home in Buffalo Center.

Alice was a long-time member of the First Reformed Church in Buffalo Center, where she faithfully attended. She was a member of the church's Golden Club, served as past president of Dorcas Circle and she also sang in the church choir.

Alice's greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed having tea with family and friends. She loved gardening, caring for her indoor plants, crocheting and baking. Alice also enjoyed fishing with Henry.

Alice passed away at her home on Sunday (July 22, 2001) at the age of 89.

She is survived by her two daughters, Elaine Boehm and her husband, George, of Buffalo Center, and Lila Hassebrock and her husband, Roger, of Des Moines; two sons, Peter and his wife, Lou Ann, of Rake, and Arnold and his wife, Julienne, of Rake; 18 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; a son, Harold; one sister; three brothers; and by a great grandson, Allen Boehm.

THELMA BRONES

LAKE MILLS - The funeral for Thelma Brones, 90, of Lake Mills, will be held 10:30 a.m. today at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be at Beaver Creek Cemetery.

Visitation was held Tuesday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills, and also will be held one hour before services today at the church.

Thelma Brones passed away Monday evening (July 23, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Thelma Jurgenson Arneson Brones was born on May 7, 1911, at Upham, N.D., the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Jurgenson. At the age of 2, her mother died during childbirth. She then moved to Joice, to be reared by her aunt Sara Arneson.

She was baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, where she was a lifetime member. She graduated from Lake Mills High School.

She married Lyle S. Brones at Joice on Jan. 3, 1929. She tragically lost her husband in an automobile accident on Easter Sunday in 1955. She worked as a clerk at Dunn's V-Store at Forest City before becoming an employee of Deluxe Products, where she retired.

Thelma passed away Monday, July 23, 2001, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. She will be remembered for her strength, her love of family and friends, and as an accomplished pianist.

Thelma is survived by one son, Max Brones and his wife, Margie, of Lake Mills; one daughter, Diane Sewald and her husband, Edward, of Apple Valley, Minn.; six grandchildren, Lynn Brones and his wife, Laura, of Johnston, Lee Brones and his wife, Carolyn, of Louisville, Ky., Lisa Brones and her fiancé, Chris Huber, of Louisville, Ky., Lori Westcott and her husband, Scott, of Lake Mills, Jennifer Rasmusson and her husband, Mark, of Chandler, Ariz., and Stacy Sewald of Minnetonka, Minn.; eight great-grandchildren, Brock and Brett Brones, of Johnston, Marques, Brandon and Kelsea Brones, of Louisville, Ky., Megan and Morgan Fjelstad, and Madison Westcott all of Lake Mills. Thelma is also survived by a sister, Ella Pedersen, of Los Angeles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one infant sister; three brothers, Maurice, Jack and Joe; and one sister, Alice Mott.

ALICE WIRTZ

LATIMER - Alice Wirtz, 93, of Latimer, died Friday (July 20, 2001) at the Hampton Care Center.

Her visitation and funeral were held on Monday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with Father Brian Shepley officiating. Burial was at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Alice Wirtz, nee Coulter, was born Jan. 15, 1908, in Lacey, to Ruth (Dilley) and Albert Coulter. She spent her childhood in the Oskaloosa area, moving to Des Moines with her family as a teen-ager.

She was married to Milton S. Wirtz on May 4, 1927, by his father, the Rev. Wm. E. Wirtz, at the Wirtz home. The couple spent many years in Iowa City, where Milton attended the University of Iowa, eventually graduating from the College of Dentistry.

They settled in Latimer to begin the practice of dentistry, which was interrupted by Dr. Wirtz's call to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII. After their return, they spent the rest of their working lives in Latimer.

Alice is survived by a daughter, Margaret Hanawalt, of Hampton; two great-grandchildren, Nikki and Adam Blaas, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Prudence (Mrs. Howard) Taylor, of Des Moines, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton, in November 1993; her grandson, Dennis, in December 1993, and her grandson, Steven, in April 1998.

Memorials may be given to the Franklin County Historical Society or Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa, Franklin County Project.
