ALLISON - Lucille Gardner, 77, of 21657 160th St., died Tuesday (July 10, 2001) at home in rural Allison.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Bennezette Wesleyan Church in rural Aredale. Burial will be in the Allison Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, and one hour before services at the church.

GLEN 'BUD' HAYWARD JR.

KIMBERLING CITY, Mo. - Memorial services for Glen "Bud" Hayward Jr., 72, of 48 WhiteRock Lane, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson of First United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

FRANK E. BLACKBOURN

MASON CITY - Frank E. Blackbourn, 91, of 210 14th St. N.E., died Monday (July 9, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Elmwood Cemetery, with the Rev. John "Jack" Gannett of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Memorials may be given to the Humane Society of North Iowa.

Frank E. Blackbourn was born on Aug. 12, 1909, in Beetown, Wis., the son of Elmer and Mary (Perrin) Blackbourn. He attended schools in Wisconsin.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy May Provinski on Nov. 22, 1935, in Abbotsford, Wis. They moved to Mason City in 1936. He worked as an electrician for Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. for many years.

He was devoted to fishing, hunting and trapping.

Those left to cherish his memory included his son, Robert A. Blackbourn and his wife, Armida, of Wilmington, Calif.; granddaughters, Erin Hibst and her husband, Darrin, of Lake Forest, Calif., and Kelly Colleen Blackbourn, of Dallas, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and four brothers, Earl, Lester, Arthur and Erskine.

CLARION - Joseph Gerhard Westby, 94, of Clarion, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at the Clarion Health Care Center.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Highland Prairie Lutheran Cemetery near Rushford, Minn. Inurnment will be at Highland Prairie Cemetery.

DOROTHY GEERDES

RAKE - Dorothy Geerdes, 62, of Rake, died Sunday (July 8, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Community Chapel in Lakota, with Pastor RonWheeler officiating. Burial will be in West Cemetery in Rake.

Visitation will be held one hour before services on Thursday at the Chapel.

C.E. 'EVERETT' COBURN

TUCSON, Ariz. - Everett Coburn, known as "Ev" and baptized Charles Everett Coburn, died Monday morning July 2, 2001.

Born on a farm near Lawler, Iowa, on Aug. 10, 1917, to William Sherman Coburn and Sarah Sophia (Shaw) Coburn, he attended school at Lawler and Senior High School in Dubuque.

Everett served in the Army during World War II, and on return to the United States he lived and worked as an auto mechanic in Nora Springs.

He married Evelyn Peterson on Jan. 23, 1946, celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary this year.

Everett was an enthusiastic member of the Cedar Valley Engine Club in Nora Springs for several years.

In 1978 he and Evelyn moved to Tucson, Ariz., where Everett became a part of the team that bused exceptional children to school. He had the distinction of being the oldest altar server at his parish, the Paulist Church of Saint Cyril. Everett was a member of the Ave Marie Council 9380 of the Knights of Columbus. He served as Grand Knight from 1989-1990.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; four children, Mary Louise Wilson, of Grain Valley, Mo., Joseph Coburn, of Lynnwood, Wash., Judith Mathis, of Tucson, Ariz., and David Coburn, of Nora Springs.

Cherishing the memory of their grandfather are 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild of the fifth generation.

Everett was preceded in death by two children, Irene Miller and Charles Everett Coburn Jr.

A memorial mass was held at St. Cyril's Church in Tucson, Ariz. on July 6, 2001.

With appreciation, the family requests that all memorials be sent to their local Knights of Columbus.

EMMA L. BECKER

MASON CITY - Emma L. Becker, 80, of 1224 N. Adams Ave., died Monday (July 9, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. David Lenhart, of Spirit of the Dove Church, officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

There will be no public visitation held.

Memorials may be given to the Emma L. Becker Memorial Fund.

Emma L. Becker was born May 30, 1921, in Mason City, to Henry and Elizabeth Ellis. She graduated from Mason City High School.

She was united in marriage to Arthur L. Becker in Albert Lea, Minn., on March 14, 1940.

Emma devoted her life to the raising of her children and bringing them years of happiness. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and, above all, time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She will be dearly missed by four sons, Robert Becker and his wife, Sally, of Mason City, Roger Becker and his wife, Kathy, of Clear Lake, Ronald Becker and his wife, Cathi, of Des Moines, and Randy Becker, of Mason City; four daughters, Linda Murphy and her husband, Tom, of Arvada, Colo., Rebecca Becker, of Mason City, Roxanne Flores and her husband, Robert, of Dubuque, and Rhonda Eastman and her husband, Charles, of Carpenter; one brother, Harold Ellis and his wife, Ellen, of Mason City; 12 grandchildren, Jason, Michelle, Jeffrey, Joel, Chris, Dan, Devon, Rob, Joe, Jennifer, Spring and Anna; five great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Levi, Brianna, Ryan and Kyle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; three brothers; and her husband, Arthur, in 1992.

MARCELLA MAY CONNER

MANKATO, Minn. - Marcella May Conner, 67, of Mankato, died Monday (July 9, 2001) at Hillcrest Health Care Center.

Private family interment will be at Minneopa Cemetery, South Bend Township, Blue Earth County, Minn.

Mrs. Conner was born Feb. 28, 1934, in Clear Lake, to Floyd C. and Joy W. (Ransom) Kotz. She graduated from Manly High School and the University of Northern Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Forrest A. Conner on Jan. 10, 1954, in Webster City. She was an elementary teacher in New Hampton in the early 1960s.

Mrs. Conner and her husband started FarmEcon, Inc., in 1977, which was premixed supplements for agriculture. She continued to run the business after her husband's death in 1980 and sold the business in 1988. She enjoyed music and art.

She is survived by three children and their spouses, Kristin and Mark Otto, of Sioux City, Shelley and Jim Tholen, of Faribault, Minn., and Gregory and Barb Conner, of Owatonna, Minn.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Charlene Potter, of Des Moines, and Linda Berg and her husband, Gene, of Destin, Fla.; one brother and his wife, Leonard and Libby Kotz, of Des Moines; and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law and brother-in-law.

MARJORY ANN KIEFER

CLEAR LAKE - Marjory Ann Kiefer, 78, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (July 8, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. The body is being cremated. The inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.

Family will be visiting with friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. and a scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

Memorials maybe given to Hospice of North Iowa in her name.

Marjory was born Jan. 30, 1923, the daughter of John and Frances (Oulman) Maher in Lake Mills. She was raised on a farm just east of Lake Mills and was in the Lake Mills graduating class of 1942. Marge worked for Gordon Osguard at Lake Mills Graphic as a color artist and photographer.

She married Robert Kiefer on July 5, 1943, in Forest City, in the St. James Catholic Church parsonage, with Father Slowy officiating. They settled in Garner, and opened Kiefer Studio. They had two children, Steven and Mary Jo, in the eight years that they were in Garner. They moved the family and the business to Clear Lake in 1954. They had another child, Kathy.

Marge enjoyed her work and was an artist at heart; she was always doodling and drawing pictures of people.

She was very committed to her religion and was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

When they closed Kiefer Studio after retirement, she contacted every customer she could to see if they wanted the negative of their family. She felt it was a privilege to be able to share in people or families' special moments and capture them in pictures.

She also enjoyed camping, coin collecting, playing cards and politics, and after retirement she joined an investment club that she enjoyed very much.

She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were a special delight to her.

Marjory is survived by her husband, Robert Kiefer, of Clear Lake; one son, Steve Kiefer and his wife, Julie, of Sedro Wooley, Wash.; two daughters, Mary Jo Keenan and her husband, Tom, of Clear Lake, and Kathy Mostrom and her husband, Mark, of Ventura; seven grandchildren, Adam Comley, Mike Keenan, Kim McLaughlin, Chris Keenan, Matt Mostrom, Brian Mostrom and Mary Louise Egsdahl; nine great-grandchildren Alison, Sean, Taylor, Adam II, Ashley, Aaron, Ashley, Amber and Annette.

Marjory was preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances Maher; three brothers, Paul, Robert F. and Robert John Maher.

RICHARD HARRY DUNN

MESA, Ariz.-Richard Harry Dunn, 76, formerly of Mason City, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home in Mesa.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive, in Mason City, with Ann Kuhlman, director of O.K. House, officiating.

Richard Harry Dunn was born in Mason City, the second son of Ralph B. and Mary June (McArthur) Dunn, on Oct. 11, 1924. He graduated from Portland No. 6 Cerro Gordo County school, then attended Mason City High School, where he graduated in 1942. He attended Iowa State College until he was called home to help on the farm when his father lost a leg in a farm accident.

He was a 4-H member and leader, a Farm Bureau member and a charter member of Ponies of America. He also belonged to the Aberdeen Angus Association. He was a livestock judge and buyer and many recognized his outstanding voice when he worked horse shows in the area. He received an award for outstanding farmer of the year. Most of his interests were farm related.

In 1948 he married Betty Ann Duea. Together they had three children, Larry Brian, Thomas Richard and Mary Jayne.

He was a purebred cattle herdsman for three years in South Dakota. After farming he was employed by Heidkross Herefords, Sheffield Cattle Co., Armour, Midwest Wholesale and Younkers, from which he retired in 1988 and moved to Arizona.

In 1967, he married Elizabeth Hanes Jackley and adopted her two daughters, Jane Elizabeth and Helen Frances.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Elizabeth; children Jane Angell and her husband, Doug, Mason City, Helen Jackley and fiance, Lewis Seales, Fort Worth, Texas, Larry Dunn and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, Tom Dunn and his wife, Rita, Mason City and Mary Jayne Schmidt, Mason City; grandchildren, Joshua Morse, Nathan Morse, Tyler Dunn, Tucker Dunn, Zachary Holland-Dunn, Parker Holland-Dunn, Meredith Dunn, Gabriel Dunn, Jillian Dunn, Ann Schmidt and Haley Dunn.

He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1964; his brother, Robert; his parents; and a grandson, Alexander Dunn.

HENRY FRANK MADSEN

MASON CITY - Henry Frank Madsen, age 82, formerly of 19 Fifth St. N.W. died Wednesday (July 11, 2001) at the Manly Care Center.

Memorial services for Henry will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jeffrey Dahlin, officiating. Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors by the Mason City Memorial Association.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Friday at the funeral home.

Henry was born on Sept. 14, 1918 at International Falls, Minn., the son of Lars Christian and Laura (Rasmussen) Madsen. He attended school in Osage. He was further trained in sheet metal, air conditioning, and welding at a trade school in Seattle Washington.

He entered the Air Force in 1943 at Camp Dodge, in Des Moines. After honorably serving his country he was discharged in 1945 from the St. Louis-Jefferson barracks.

Henry was united in marriage to Shirley Sweeney on Sept. 12, 1941 at Albert Lea, Minn. To this union were born three children.

He lived in Manly from 1966 until 1988 when he moved to Mason City. He was employed at Lehigh Portland Cement Company for 20 years and then owned and operated Madsen Welding, retiring in 1972.

He always had a building project going and was active with the Mason City school system teaching welding.

In his spare time he enjoyed boating and vegetable gardening as well as traveling to the woods and forests in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Henry is survived by his daughter, Karen and her husband, Marvin Grouette, of Mason City; his son, Larry and his wife, Jean Madsen, of Manly; six grandchildren, Pam Servantez, Rick and Tim Grouette, Jamie, Brent and Matthew Madsen; 10 great-grandchildren Casey, Aaron, Joshua, Cory, Justin, Melinda, Chris, Cathy, Johnathan, and Jacob; two brothers, Victor Madsen, of Mason City; George, in France; two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Sweeney, of Mason City and Lloyd Nielsen, of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1984; one son, Steven; four sisters, Agnes, Olga, Victoria, and Esther; and three brothers, David, Ejler, and Harold.

Betty M. Dillon was born on Oct. 21, 1923 in Mason City, the daughter of Lloyd L. and Violet M. (Griffith) Geer. She graduated from Mason City High School and went on to further her education at Mason City Junior College and Cornell.

She began working for First National Bank in 1943. She retired as a teller after 16 years of service.

She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution).

She enjoyed traveling and tending to her yard.

She will be missed by several close friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

MASON CITY - John R. Dawson, 90, of Mason City, died Wednesday (July 11, 2001) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S. E., with the Rev. Carl A. Ries officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

John was born Feb. 2, 1911 in Des Moines, the son of Ross and Laura Genevieve (Hannon) Dawson. He graduated from Lehigh High School in Lehigh.

John was united in marriage to Beth Opal Blake on Feb. 11, 1939 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. He served in the United States Army from November of 1943 until March of 1946, during World War II.

John was a self-employed truck driver for over 40 years. He owned his own fleet of trucks, which he delivered for Mason City Brick and Tile for many years.

He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

John is survived by one sister, Frances Kringbring, and her husband, Lloyd, of Clinton; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Beth, in 1999.

MASON CITY - Grace V. Anderson, 95, of Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (July 11, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jonathan Swenson officiating. Inurnment will take place at Clear Lake Cemetery on a later date.

According to Grace's wishes, her body was cremated, and there will be no visitation.

FOREST CITY - Larry C. LaGue Jr., 38, of 505 West L. St., Forest City, died Monday (July 9, 2001) at his home.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and then one hour before the service on Friday.

The family suggests memorials to Larry C. LaGue Jr. Memorial fund.

Larry was born Feb. 25, 1963 in Mason City, the son of Larry and Diane (Sorensen) LaGue. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1981 and from NIACC in 1983. After graduating he worked in Colorado, Wisconsin, Missouri and then moved back to the North Iowa area in 1996. He worked at Winnebago and then at Forest City Foods.

Larry enjoyed working with the public, camping, listening to 50's & 60's music, was a big Buddy Holly fan, biking, photography and going to the Y in Forest City. He was involved with A.A. groups in the Forest City area.

Larry is survived by his parents, Larry and Diane LaGue, of Clear Lake; and a brother, Jeff LaGue and his wife, Domenie, of Clear Lake; maternal grandmother, Helen Sorensen, of Alden; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. BELMOND - Dorothy M. Higgins, 83, of Belmond, died Wednesday (July 11, 2001) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Her funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John Lutheran Church in Belmond, with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Interment will be in St. Olaf Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Dorothy Mineth Higgins, the daughter of Herman F. and Betsey (Nelson) Larson Finndorf, was born on Sept. 27, 1917, in Kanawha. She was baptized at the Kanawha Lutheran Church. She moved to a farm in Minnesota in 1926, where she attended school and graduated in 1935.

Dorothy left for California in 1936, where she met Paul Higgins and they were married in 1942. She spent a year in Texas while Paul was in cadet training in the United States Air Force, and also spent a year in Belmond, working in the office of her brother, Dr. A.M. Larson.

She moved back to California in 1945, where she lived until returning to Belmond in 1982 and moved into the Redder-McLaughlin Apartments.

Dorothy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed in 1933. She transferred her membership to St. John Lutheran Church in 1995, where she was active in the WELCA and the Dorcas Mission Guild.

She was a member of the Tally-Ho Bridge Club, Senior Citizens, Belmond Food Pantry, and Over 60s Club. She also volunteers for Meals on Wheels, Hospice and Care Center and was the coordinator of the Belmond Care Car for 14 years.

She was well known for her delicious sugar cookies that she shared with friends and family.


She is survived by two sisters, Mabel Sybilrud, and Pearl Larson, both of Belmond; more than 100 nieces and nephews, including great, great-great-and great-great-great, whom she dearly loved and, especially, Janyce Kinseth, whom she depended upon so much.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Paul; brothers, Ralph Larson and Dr. A.M. Larson; two brothers in infancy; and one sister, Lillian Engel.

STACYVILLE - Lucy (Thome) Adams, 92, died Tuesday (July 10, 2001) at the Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Ill.

FRANK F. EBLE

MASON CITY - Frank F. Eble, 92, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., died on Tuesday (July 10, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at The Willows, 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., with the Rev. Carl Ries of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Graceland Cemetery in Racine, Wis.

Memorials may be given to the Frank F. Eble Memorial Fund.

There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.

Frank was born May 28, 1909, in Germany, the son of August and Katherine (Wolf) Eble. Frank was a cabinet maker in Germany, coming to the United States in 1929.

He worked as a waiter and bartender at the Racine Wisconsin Country Club and later at the Elks Lodge.

He married Eva Kauffeld, from Racine, on March 13, 1933, in Chicago. He became an industrial pattern maker, retiring in 1973.

He was active in the German Club of Racine, serving as president, and was a member of the bowling league as well.

He enjoyed playing cards and golfing. Frank and Eva moved to Mason City a couple of years ago, where they resided at The Willows.

He is survived by his wife, Eva, of Mason City; daughter, Judith Mathes and her husband, Dick, of Mason City; a son, Rick Eble and his wife, Peggy, of Manitowish Waters, Wis.; grandchildren, Ame Gargulak and her husband, Terry, Kristen Eble, Rick Mathes and his wife, Kristi, and Robert Mathes; and two great-grandchildren.

JACK W. LIMBAUGH SR.

ALGONA - The funeral for Jack W. Limbaugh Sr., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Regular Baptist Church, with Pastor Don Johnston, Pastor Chris Brauns and Pastor Eldon Weaver as officiates. Jack W. Limbaugh Sr. was born Aug. 29, 1924, in Adair County, to Calvin and Madge McKibben Limbaugh. His early education was in rural schools in Adair County and then Greenfield High School. Following high school he worked with his father on the farm.

He volunteered to serve his country in August 1944. He was in the 2nd Armored Division of the European Theatre in the occupation forces of Germany. While there he stood in review for Truman, Stalin and Churchill in Potsdam. On July 4, 1946, he returned home and finished his education at Iowa State University as an industrial engineer. While at ISU he served on the Veisha committee in the engineering department.

On June 15, 1947, he married Helen Baier in Greenfield. The couple lived in Ames and Storm Lake before moving to Algona in 1952 to the tire business, which is now Jack's OK Tire Service, with a branch store, Mason City Tire Service in Mason City.

Jack was a member of the American Legion, was actively involved with the Algona Industrial Corporation, past president and member of the Algona School Board, and board member of Boatman's Bank of Algona.

He was a very active member of the Regular Baptist Church in Algona, where he taught adult Sunday school for more than 30 years.

He was a member and past president of the Algona Rotary Club and member and past president of Toastmasters International. Jack was also a member of the Iowa Tire Association and National Tire Dealers.

Jack was currently serving on the board of Faith Baptist Bible College and Theological Seminary. He received the Honorary Alumnus Award from the college in 1999.

Jack died Tuesday (July 10, 2001) at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital at the age of 76.

CLARK RUSSELL OLTMAN

MANLY - Clark Russell Oltman, 81, Manly, died Wednesday, (July 11, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held 10 a.m. on Monday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly.

Friends may call from 3 until 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St. in Manly, and one hour before service time on Monday at the church.

The family of Clark Russell Oltman has requested that memorial contributions be made in his memory.

Clark Russell Oltman was born on June 30, 1920, in Osage, the son of Harm and Christine (Christiansen) Oltman. He was baptized and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation in the Lutheran faith. He attended and received his education in the Manly school system, graduating from Manly High School.

On Oct. 7, 1941, he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Ft. Des Moines, serving overseas in Naples Foggia, Rome, Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe, receiving the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Bronze Service Arrowhead with one silver battle star, and five overseas service bars, and was honorably discharged on Oct. 9, 1945, at Ft. Sheridan, Ill.

He was united in marriage to Nina Helen Macku on Oct. 20, 1942, in Hyansport, Mass. She preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 1995.

After their marriage they moved to Manly in July 1946, and together they owned and operated Oltman's Grocery Store in Manly until their retirement in 1982. After his retirement, Clark continued to work in the store with his son, Mark.

He enjoyed raising horses, hunting and loved working outdoors, but his great love and enjoyment was his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly, which he helped build, Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly, former volunteer fireman, and member of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and the N.R.A.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Clark "Corky" Oltman, of Minneapolis, Mark Oltman and his wife, Connie, of Manly, and Nancy McCourt and her husband, Dan, of Manly; four grandchildren, Dawn Sundvold, Mark Oltman, Tyler and Steve Henaman all of Manly; two great-grandchildren, Schyler and Tanner Sundvold; a brother, Max Oltman and his wife, Beverly, of Cedar Falls; and a sister, Irene Hoaglin, of Hillsboro; as well as other relatives and many friends.

THORNTON - Johanna Christensen, 85, of Thornton, died Thursday (July 12, 2001) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton, with the Rev. Robert Hetrick officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

Johanna was born Sept. 14, 1915, in St. Louis, a daughter of Joseph and Louise (Miller) Wradislavsky. At a young age her family moved, settling in the Hollandale and Hayward, Minn. Area, where she attended school.

On Oct. 10, 1936, Johanna was united in marriage with Aage K. Christensen. They made their home on a farm east of Thornton. In 1945 they purchased a farm southwest of Thornton, where they lived and worked until retiring in 1969 and moved into Thornton in 1970.

Johanna was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thornton and the Church Women. She was also a member of the Thornton Women's Club and Senior Citizens Club.

She enjoyed fishing with her husband at Lake Pepin, Minn., and tending flowers as well as raising vegetables in her garden. She also enjoyed crocheting.

On Feb. 1, 1908, Yolanda was born to proud parents, Joseph and Rosa ( Fia) Calicchia, in Italy. At the age of 3, Yolanda and her family moved to the United States and made their home in Mason City.

In February 1929, she was united in marriage to Willis J. Mariner. In 1979, Yolanda retired after devoting 10 years to the Athenian Supper Club and 10 years to the Flame and Ember.

Yolanda had a green thumb when it came to her gardens, especially African violets. That wasn't her only talent; every Sunday it became a tradition to gather at Yolanda's home for her famous spaghetti and meatballs. But Yolanda's favorite food was fish.

Her family was the core of her heart. She loved tending to their needs and adding smiles to their faces. Yolanda enjoyed watching TV and, in her younger years, enjoyed crocheting rugs.

Grace V. Anderson was born on Feb. 11, 1906, at Osseo, Wis., the daughter of Martin Julius and Anna Marie (Larsen) Anderson.

Grace graduated from high school, and went on to further her education by graduating from the University of Minnesota. She spent her lifetime involved in education. From 1926 until 1938, Grace was an elementary educator in the Clear Lake public school system, and from 1938 to 1972, she was the principal of Central Elementary School in Clear Lake.

Throughout her career, Grace was awarded with many honors including Clear Lake Schools Teacher of the Year in 1956, Honorary Citizen of Clear Lake in 1950, and Honorary 4th of July Mayor in the 1970s.

She was an active member at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, where she participated in the choir, was a Bible school teacher, took part in the quilting group, and was a member of WELCA. Grace also enjoyed playing bridge.

Grace is survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Roy was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Mt. Vernon Township, the son of William and Lucretia (Bradley) Smith.

He was united in marriage to Omie Wietzel on Sept. 14, 1938, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City. They were later divorced.

Roy was later united in marriage to Ruth Brakel at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, in 1972. He was a lifelong farmer in the Swaledale and Mason City area at the Chevrolet Farms. In 1968, he quit farming and began work at the Plymouth Elevator until his retirement.

Roy enjoyed fishing, gardening and long country drives. He also enjoyed woodworking and made many special gifts for his children and grandchildren.

Roy was a member of Farm Bureau and the Mason City Moose Lodge.

ELIZABETH TURNER

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Elizabeth Turner, 91, formerly of Friendship Acres, Marble Rock, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Marble Rock, with interim Pastor Clarence Baalson officiating. Burial will be in Union Prairie Cemetery, Decorah.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, Marble Rock, where there will be a public scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before service time at the church Monday.

Bertha Clara Elizabeth Istad was born Jan. 6, 1910, in rural Decorah, a daughter of Andrew and Clara (Woldt) Istad, and died Friday, July 13, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.


She received her education in the Decorah Public Schools graduating in 1928 and later attending Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Elizabeth taught in rural schools in Winnieshiek County for several years.

In 1934 she was married to Ralph Preston in Galena, Ill. To this union were born two children. They lived in Colorado for a short time before moving to Marble Rock.

Elizabeth was united in marriage to George Turner on March 31, 1948, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. George and Elizabeth owned and operated several businesses in Marble Rock which included Turner's Produce, Turner's Market from 1954-60 and later Turner's Café.

Elizabeth had a great love for music, working in her garden and enjoyed reading. She was a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Marble Rock, a member of the Ladies Aid and church circles. She was also a member of the Marble Rock American Legion Auxiliary.

Living family members include her daughter, Charlotte Parcher of Mason City; her son, Andrew Alton and his wife, Janet Turner, of Roanoke, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren
.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1970; her parents; and one sister, Emma Baker.

CLARENCE W. DEBNER

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Clarence W. Debner, 78, of 620 College Street, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Marble Rock, with interim Pastor Clarence Baalson officiating. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery, Marble Rock.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock where there will be a public scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before the services Tuesday.

Clarence William Debner was born April 3, 1923, in Coldwater Township, Butler County, near Vilmar, a son of Ferdinand Fred and Agnes Margaret (Abendroth) Debner, and died Friday, July 13, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.


He was baptized on May 23, 1923, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar and as a child moved to a farm near Marble Rock. He received his education in the rural schools and later graduated second in his class from the Marble Rock High School in 1940.

He was inducted into the United States Army April 14, 1943, where served with the 42nd Infantry Division in Northern France. He was awarded several medals including the Bronze Star. Following his discharge on April 20, 1946, he began farming in the Marble Rock, Greene and Colwell area.


On Dec. 13, 1947, he was united in marriage to Helen Patterson of St. Ansgar at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. From 1950-1956 he was owner of Hartwick Tap in Hartwick, Iowa, and a plumbing and tiling business in Belle Plaine before returning to the Marble Rock area. They moved into Marble Rock in 1984 following his retirement.

Clarence will be remembered for his great sense of humor and for never being willing to give up even when his health was failing. His interests included sports, crossword puzzles and being an avid reader. He was active in the Boy Scouts, V.F.W. in Charles City and the American Legion posts of Greene and Marble Rock.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Helen of Marble Rock; three daughters, Linda Marlene Debner of Marble Rock, Patricia Sue and her husband, Kim, of Marengo, and Joan Marie and her husband, Jeffrey Wright, of Holmen, Wis; five grandchildren, Paul and Sara Nelson and Alicia, Krysta and Jeremy Wright; three sisters, Viola Keith of Marble Rock, Della Van Fleet of Cedar Falls and Marlene Gerholdt of Waterloo; one brother. Dean Debner of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Lloyd.

MASON CITY - Kathy D. Kraus, 31, died Friday (July 13, 2001) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 Fourteenth St. N.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Robert Connor officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

CHARLES WILLIAM ABEL

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Charles William Abel, 67, formerly of Mason City, died Friday (June 29, 2001) in Scottsdale, Ariz.

No services will be held. Messinger Mortuary in Scottsdale is in charge of arrangements.

Charles was the son of Wilson and Genevieve Abel. He graduated from Holy Family High School in 1952 and attended Iowa State University.

Charles is survived by his wife, Louise, of Scottsdale; two sisters, Anne Abel of Pacifica, Calif., and Magery Schiemann of Fitzwilliam, N.H.; and a brother, John Abel, of Irvine, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents.


FLOYD ALBERT HEMMING

BOLIVAR, Mo.- Floyd Albert Hemming, 93, formerly of Thornton, passed away Friday (July 13, 2001) at Christian Health Care Center, Hermitage, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Thornton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Franklyn Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton, under the direction of Hathaway Peterman Funeral Home, Wheatland, Mo.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church Monday.

Floyd Albert Hemming was born Jan. 20, 1908, in Thornton, the son of Albert and Julia (Chase) Hemming.


Mr. Hemming was a retired real estate developer. He had lived 40 years at Thornton prior to moving to California and then to Bolivar, Mo., in 1988. He was a former member of the Thornton United Methodist Church, Thornton.

Floyd is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marguerite and Franklyn Taylor of Urbana, Mo.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ethel Hemming on Jan. 13, 2001; and a daughter, Betty Nicholson.
