MASON CITY - Enrique S. Ayala, 81, of Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 16, 2001) at his daughter's home in Mason City.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Kenneth Gehling, chaplin from Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, officiating.

There will be no visitation. Memorials may be given to the Enrique S. Ayala Memorial Fund.

MASON CITY - Emily Lou Lane Greiman, 3-year-old daughter of Mark and Jody Greiman of Mason City, died Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at the Bruce's Funeral Home Chapel, 923 First Ave. S. in Fort Dodge. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

HAMPTON - Carl V. Sailer, 80, of Hampton, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

COULTER - Marien E. Pierce, 84, of Coulter, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at the Hampton Care Center.

ALLISON - Marjorie Alice Harms, 79, of Allison, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at the Hampton Care Center.

HELEN KNAPP

SHEFFIELD - Helen (Halma) Knapp, 91, of the Hampton Health Care Center, died Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at the Hampton Health Care Center.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield, with the Rev. David Nelson of the Church of Christ of Hampton officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Helen was born Dec. 7, 1909, near Faulkner, to Richard and Cora (Molhoek) Halma. She attended school in Kesley and the West Fork School. She attended Dumont High School.

On Oct. 3, 1933, Helen was united in marriage with Emery Mearl Knapp in Nashua.

Helen was a member of the Zion Evangelical United Methodist Church in Sheffield and the church circles.

She liked to garden; her flowers were important to her. She enjoyed playing Yahtzee and cards with her sisters and would write many letters each week and exchange them with her family and friends. She also enjoyed crocheting and embroidering.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Phyllis Masiker and her husband, David, of Hampton; seven grandchildren, Sherri Fitzgerald and her husband, Michael, of Mason City, Timothy Knapp and his wife, Debra, of Rudd, Deborah Masiker and Kevin Knapp, of Iowa Falls, Daniel Knapp and his wife, Kathy, of Ames, Michael Masiker, of Cedar Falls, and Troy Knapp, of Alden; six great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Meyers, of Rockford; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 1970; daughter, Shirley Ann Knapp, in infancy; son, Dennis Lee Knapp; grandson, David Michael Masiker; brother, Jacob Halma; sister, Edna Lindloff; and four brothers and sisters in infancy.

EDYTHE L. FRYAR

ROCKWELL CITY - Edythe L. Fryar, 77, died Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at the Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Rockwell City, with the Rev. Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Rockwell City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Palmer Funeral Home, 528 Main St. in Rockwell City.

Edythe Luana Bellcock was born on Sept. 3, 1923, on a farm near Cooper. She graduated from Panora High School with the class of 1940 and also attended Iowa State Teachers College.

Following her education, she taught school in Guthrie and Calhoun Counties.

On Nov. 16, 1947, she was united in marriage to Russell Fryar at the United Methodist Church in Rockwell City. Edythe was a homemaker for most of her life.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW, Twin Lakes Community Club, and past Sunday school teacher.

She is survived by her husband, Russell; daughter, Carol Moberg and her husband, Steve, of Rockwell City; sons, Dennis Fryar and his wife, Bonnie, of Mason City, and Dean Fryar and his wife, Kandis, of Rockwell City; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Albinger, Cathy Voith, Matthew, Michael, Sara, Kelly and Katie Fryar; three great-grandchildren, Conor and Cael Albinger, and Blake Fryar; a sister, Velma Hoffman, of Edinburg, Texas; brothers, Paul Bellcock, of Sac City, and James Bellcock, of Searcy, Ark.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Orves Roy and Winnie Jackson Bellcock; a brother, Merwin Bellcock; sister, Pauline Wasson; and an infant brother, Orves Roy Bellcock Jr.

DR. RICHARD E. CALHOUN

CLEAR LAKE - Dr. Richard E. Calhoun, 82, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating.

The family will greet friends one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Hospital College of Medicine.

Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa or the Clear Lake Senior Citizens.

Richard was born June 17, 1918, in Lake Mills, the son of Joseph Alexander and Mable (Bryant) Calhoun. He graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1935, attended Iowa State Teachers College, Mason City Jr. College, and graduated from the University of Missouri Dental College in 1943.

Richard married LaVerne Sattler on Feb. 19, 1944, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lt. Commander during WW II, serving on the USS Black Hawk in Sing Tow, China.

Following the service he moved to Clear Lake. In April 1946 he started practice with Dr. A. A. Joslyn and practiced for more than 44 years, retiring in 1990. He worked with the Christian Dental Missionary, traveling to St. Vincents, Dominican Republic, Granada and Jamaica. He was Cub Master for Pack No. 103.

Richard was a member and enjoyed singing in the choir at the United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the North Iowa Men's Garden Club, Men's Bridge Club, Clear Lake Rotary and past president and life member of the Iowa Dental Society, and past president of the North Central District of Dental Society.

He loved playing cribbage, bridge, fishing, golfing and hunting.

Richard is survived by his wife, LaVerne Calhoun, of Clear Lake; two sons, Richard Calhoun and his wife, Sandy, of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Dr. Robert Calhoun, of Edmunds, Wash.; two grandchildren, Michelle and Jeff Calhoun; and one brother, John Calhoun and his wife Roz, of Mason City.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Joseph Calhoun.

WILLIAM 'BILL' S. KNOPF

CLINTON - William "Bill" S. Knopf, 53, of Clinton, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at his home.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the Pape Funeral Home, 2308 Pershing Blvd. in Clinton, with the Rev. Dawn Phares officiating.

Visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield, with the Rev. Remigo Panlaqui officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Loren, Ronald, George, and Stanley Stevens, David Kruse, Robert Rube, Carleton Waldrop and Fred Kruse.

Bill was born on Aug. 21, 1947, in Mason City, to Paul and Glorine (Stevens) Knopf. He was baptized in the Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church in Sheffield. He graduated from Sheffield-Chapin Community High School in 1966 and attended the University of Iowa for one year.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran from 1967 to 1971, serving in the Vietnam War. Bill moved to Clinton in 1973, where he worked as a postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office in Clinton for 21 years.

On April 22, 2000, he was involved in a serious motorcycle accident that inhibited him from continuing his work, which he dearly loved.

He was a member of the Postal Workers Union and the Eagle's Club.

Bill enjoyed motorcycling, his home, his job and his dogs.

Bill is survived by his father, Paul Knopf of Waverly; two aunts; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

DANIEL STEPHEN GRANT SR.


MASON CITY - Daniel Stephen Grant Sr., 56, of 137 15th St. N.W., died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at the veteran's hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at the first Church of the Nazarene, 507 Carolina S. Ave., with the Rev. Curtis D. Delong officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation was held Tuesday at the Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Daniel S. Grant, Sr., Memorial Fund.

Daniel was born on Aug. 24, 1944, the only son of five children born to Donald and Marcella "Holub" Grant. He attended school in Mason City and then joined the Army in 1960 where he finished his schooling. Daniel was honorably discharged from the service in 1964.

He was united in marriage to Bernice Mikkelsen on Dec. 31, 1966, at the Salvation Army Church in Pontiac, Michigan. To this union were born four children. For the next five years they made their home there and he was a carrier for the United States Postal Service.

In 1971 they returned to Mason City where he was employed at various jobs in North Iowa including at Winnebago, Clear Lake Bakery, the Salvation Army, Domino's Pizza, and Gerard of Iowa. He was currently employed as a transit driver for the city of Mason City.

He loved his grandbabies, cross- word puzzles, and watching game shows. He never met a stranger and had a keen knack with people, making them feel right at home.

Those thankful in sharing Daniel's life include his wife of 34 years, Bernice; two daughters, Michelle and her husband, Ray Hancock, of Urbandale, and Christina and her husband, John Crom; two sons, Daniel "JR" and his wife, Heidi Grant Jr. and Jeffery Grant, all of Mason City; four grandchildren, Samantha Hancock, Brittnee Crom, Cassandra Hoveland, and Savanna Grant; his stepfather, Lynn Turbett, of Mason City; four sisters, Donna and her husband, Maynard Kaduce, Sue and her husband, Howard Nash, Frankie and her late husband, Gary Knajdek, all of Michigan, and Tammy and her husband, Mike Herzog, of Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother-in-law, Gary Knajdek.

BERTHA MUHLENBRUCH

LATIMER - Bertha Muhlenbruch, 94, of Latimer, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Immanuel United Church of Christ.

Bertha Elizabeth Muhlenbruch, 94 years of age, was born on Jan. 30, 1907, to Henry and Elizabeth (Sheets) Friesleben at Kanawha. She attended school at Alexander.

She married Lester Muhlenbruch on Aug. 5, 1931, at Alexander. They farmed until 1967 and moved into Latimer. She worked at various places in Hampton.

Bertha enjoyed knitting, bowling, golf, fishing and traveling. Bertha was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer and was a part of the church guild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in June 1990; a grandson on June 25, 1992; four brothers, Art, August, Dell and one in infancy, Christian; and two sisters, Anna Wellner and Lena.

She leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Maxine Johansen and her husband, Wendell "Lump," of Hampton, and Fran Stackhouse and her husband, Jack, of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren, Mark and Luann Johansen, Jane and Al Eilderts, Anne and Bryce Claypool, and Scott and Paula Stackhouse; nine great-grandchildren, Nate, Nicholas, Leah, Hannah, Spencer, Gabriel, Elle, Parker and Brady.

DR. DELENE W. YOCUM-CONGELLO

Dr. DeLene W. Yocum-Congello, 78, of 615 West Chestnut St., Lancaster, Pa., died Monday morning (Feb. 19, 2001) at Community Hospital of Lancaster after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of Dr. Anthony M. Congello.

Born in Davenport, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Joshua and Mary (Hilliard) Yocum. Known as Dr. Yocum-Congello, she had been a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine with a private general/family practice in Lancaster from 1946 until retiring in 1991.

She was a graduate of Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa., in pre-med studies, was a 1946 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and served her internship at the former Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital, now Community Hospital.

While at Philadelphia College, she had been one of five women in her class at a time when women were not commonly found pursuing a medical degree.

She was a life member of the Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Society, and the American Osteopathic Medical Society. She was a member of the First Reformed Church- United Church of Christ in Lancaster. She was a past secretary of the Hospital Society, and was a member of the Italian Cultural Society, the Conestoga Country Club in Lancaster, the Order of the Eastern Star in Lebanon, Pa., and the Lancaster Court of the Amaranths No. 70.

She is survived by, in addition to her husband, a son, Dr. Samuel J. Congello, married to Dr. Patricia Endress-Congello of Mason City; a daughter, Karin M. Congello of Conestoga, Pa.; two grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. Dale Yocum, of Lebanon, Pa.

She was preceded in death by a brother, the late Dr. Paul Yocum; and by a half brother, the late Dr. Clarence Yocum.

RICHARD B. ALEXANDRES

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Richard B. Alexandres, 72, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001), at his home in Cape Coral, Fla. His body will be cremated at the National Cremation Society in Ft. Myers, Fla., this week and be returned to Mason City.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City. By his wishes, there will be no memorial service, but a prayer service for the family will follow the visitation.

Richard was born on April 22, 1928, to George and Edith Alexandres in Sauk Center, Minn. At an early age, he moved to Mason City with his family, where he received his education and graduated from Mason City High.

After a year in the Navy, he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Fulk and resided in Mason City.

In 1949, Richard worked as an artist for a local printing company and then started work as an electrician at Northwestern States Portland Cement Co.

In 1952, Richard started Alexander Distributing Co., selling U-Test-M radio and TV tubes to hardware and drug stores throughout Iowa and southern Minnesota.

In 1967, he incorporated Alexander Manufacturing Co., producing alkaline battery packs used in Motorola two-way radios and selling them to United Airlines and the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad.

Over the next 30 years, he acquired more than 30 trademarks and patents with the company and in 1984 was named Area Business Person of the Year by the River City SCORE group.

In 1988, Richard received the Governor's Export Award from Terry Branstad and then retired from the company in 1996.

In 1992, Richard married Carol Ann Baird and moved to Cape Coral, Fla., in March 1995.

He enjoyed sailing and collecting and showing antique cars. He was a member of the North Iowa Antique Car Club, the Fort Myers Antique Car Club and the Cape Coral Sailing Club. He also enjoyed medieval history and collected artifacts of that era. He enjoyed his two special cats, Alice and Tomasina.

Richard is survived by his wife, Carol Ann, in Cape Coral, Fla..; three sons, Steven and his wife, Vernell, of Mason City, James and his wife, Ann, of Salina, Kan., and Jon and his wife, Leanne, of Eagan, Minn.; one daughter, Karen, of Omaha, Neb.; one step-son, Ken Baird and his wife, Joan, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one step-daughter, Janet Buffington and her husband, Kevin, of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and one half sister, Carole Hamlin and her husband, Ward, of Minnesota.

NORMAN L. TRESLAN

ALGONA - Norman L. Treslan, 66, of Algona, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A private memorial service will be held at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Gene Tindall officiating. According to his wishes, Mr. Treslan's body has been cremated.

Memorials may be directed to the Mercy Cancer Center, care of the Norman Treslan Memorial Fund, 1000 Fourth St. S.W. in Mason City.

Norman was born July 24, 1934, in Mason City, the son of Edwin and Mabel (Conibear) Treslan. He attended Fertile schools and, at the age of 18, began his lifelong work as a self-employed carpenter and cabinetmaker.

Norman was united in marriage to Darlene Anderson on Dec. 25, 1954, in Forest City. The couple lived in Clear Lake for 45 years, only recently moving to Algona to be near their daughter.

Norman had many interests, including woodworking, metal detection, riding his motorcycle, keeping a journal, welding and metal work, painting, philosophy, and taking trips to Menards.

Norman is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Algona; one daughter, Colleen Bilyeu and her husband, Rick, of Algona; one son, Gary Treslan and his wife, Brenda, of Gardner, Maine; five grandchildren, Dave Papach, and Shane, Adam, Sarah and Kaylee Treslan; one great-grandchild; and numerous cousins.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents and his special pet, his cat, Mr. Wiggins.

MONICA MARGARET SMITH O'KEEFE

MASON CITY - Monica Margaret Smith O'Keefe, 97, of Minneapolis, formerly of Mason City, died Monday (Feb. 19, 2001) in Minneapolis.

Monica was born Aug. 10, 1903, in rural Worth County, the daughter of George and Amy (Ryan) Smith.

She received her education at St. Vincent Academy in Dubuque and then earned her normal teachers training in Cedar Falls.

Monica married Leo O'Keefe on April 28, 1927, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with Father Ehl officiating.

Monica was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Frances O'Keefe, of Minneapolis; two brothers, Bernard and Robert (Norma) Smith, of Manly; one sister, Mary Smith, also of Manly; and many nieces and nephews.

Monica was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three siblings, John and Gerald Smith, and Veronica Thom.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will follow at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held one hour before services today at Holy Family Catholic Church.

ALBERT FRANKLIN CARLSON

MASON CITY - Albert Franklin Carlson, 77, of Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at his home in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. today at the Bohemian Cemetery in Plymouth.

Visitation and a public scripture wake service were held on Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel.

At the family's request, in lieu of flowers memorial contributions should be made in memory of Albert Franklin Carlson.

Albert Franklin Carlson was born on Nov. 30, 1923, in Hackensack, Minn., the son of Arne and Selma (Johnson) Carlson. He attended and received his education in the Hackensack school system.

After completing his schooling he moved to California, working in the shipyards before moving back to Mason City, working for Armour's Meat Packing Co. for 32 years until his retirement.

He was united in marriage to Janet Paulsen on May 13, 1999, in Mason City.

He enjoyed collecting records and tapes, rebuilding small engines, traveling, gardening, planting evergreens, taking care of his orchards and visiting with family and friends.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City and was a former member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Plymouth.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Janet Carlson, of Mason City; his mother-in-law, Ilona Paulsen, of Mason City; a brother, Walter Carlson and his wife, Sylvia, of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; three brothers-in-law, Gary Paulsen and his wife, Sandra, of Mason City, John Paulsen and his wife, Mary, of Mason City and Elston Factor and his wife Helena of Plymouth; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, VaLerie Carlson, in 1980; and a brother, Hans Carlson.

ROWAN - Della F. Ketchum, 83, of Rowan, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Church of Rowan, with Pastor JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery at Rowan.

MASON CITY - Edith L. Chamberlin, 82, of 1712 S. Delaware Ave., died Saturday (Feb. 17, 2001) at her son's home in Gilbert, Ariz.

Edith was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Hayfield, Minn., the daughter of Elmer R. and Ella (Anderson) Skoglund. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Hayfield and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Edith graduated from Mason City High School with the class of 1936.

She was married to Wayne J. Chamberlin on Oct. 2, 1937, in Des Moines. Edith worked for Sears for 22 years.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sarah Circle, Women's Bible Study and Coffee Class. She helped at the Good Shepherd Care Center with crafts and bingo when her church was in charge. She also belonged to the Shrine Auxiliary and the Southside walkers.

"Edie" was a subscriber of the "L L L" principles of life: Laughter, Love and Loyalty. When did we ever see her without her infectious smile and ready for a good laugh? Love and Loyalty were the main ingredients of her spiritual and spirited life. Love of God, family and friends were always her focus.

Edie loved and was fiercely loyal to her husband of over 60 years. That union produced the fruit and blessings of her beautiful children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edie adored and took such pride in her "kids." "God listens when Grandmas pray" was often heard from our dear Edie.

Loyalty to other family members and a host of friends kept her busy running errands and going to appointments which kept her red car busy- every day. Her gift of always "making you feel so very special" will be missed by all, especially her husband, Wayne, children, etc.

She is survived by her husband, Wayne J. Chamberlin, of Mason City; sons, Dennis Chamberlin and his wife, Linda, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Jerry Chamberlin and his wife, Ann, of Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren, Mark Lee and his wife, Sue, of Urbandale, Mona Durocher and her husband, Paul, of Plano, Texas, Jon Chamberlin, of Mesa, Ariz., Jeremy Chamberlin and his wife, Lori, of Cedar Rapids, Eric Chamberlin, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Janine Chamberlin, of Oak Park, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren; an aunt, Ruth R. GARY WAYNE COLE

THORNTON - Gary Wayne Cole, 59, of Thornton, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) in Des Moines.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Rockwell, with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton, with Veterans rites conducted by the American Legion Anton-Juhl Post No. 440 of Thornton.

Gary Wayne Cole was born Jan. 9, 1942, in Fort Dodge to Virgil and Jeanne (Ulum) Cole. He graduated from Rockwell-Swaledale High School in 1960 and attended Winona State College and graduated from Iowa State University in 1965.

Gary served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1967. He served in the Navy Reserve until 1994. He worked in Le Mars in sales and management from 1967 to 1986. He then had an insurance business until the time of his death.

Gary married Carol Money in 1969. They later divorced.

On July 25, 1992, Gary was united in marriage with Sandra Paulin Hebrink. They made their home in Thornton.

Gary's memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Sandra; mother, Jeanne Cole; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Mike Sollars of Liberty, Mo., Janet and Matt Proctor of Slater, Sharon and Andy Wentzy of Plymouth, Minn.; stepchildren, Phil and June Hebrink of Spring Valley, Minn., Tim and Deanne Hebrink of Spring Valley, and Alison Hebrink of Thornton. Special survivors are his precious grandchildren, Hayden and Erin Sollars, Jordan and Spencer Proctor, and Timmy and Ethan Hebrink; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Karen Cole of Mason City, John and Carol Cole of Swaledale, Paul and Joan Cole of Plymouth, Minn.; sister and brother-in-law Donna and David Paulin, of Edina. He also leaves seven nieces and three nephews, along with many, many friends and relatives.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1985.

Gary was a member of the Swaledale United Methodist Church, Thornton Lions Club, Thornton American Legion and Pleasant Valley Golf Course.

Gary loved sports, especially golf. He was an avid fan of the Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Vikings, and "any team who was playing the Yankees." He loved to travel, most recently to Europe, Oregon, Washington and Florida, proving that no person on earth was a stranger.

Gary's family will present memorial gifts to the Swaledale United Methodist Church and other favorite organizations of Gary's.

OSAGE - Karl E. Jorde, 96, of Osage died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage of natural causes.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St., Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Karl was born May 5, 1904, in Drayton, N.D., the son of Even O. and Karn (Vestre) Jorde. He was educated in the Drayton Public School, Drayton, N.D., and attended business college and Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. Karl also attended night school in real estate and law in Minneapolis.

In 1925, he worked for Thorpe Bros. Real Estate in Minneapolis. From 1926 to 1935, Karl was with Texaco in the accounting and sales department. In 1936, he became employed by Ford Motor Co. in their sales department in Des Moines, later transferring to Ford's auditing department in Detroit, Mich.

In 1944, Karl and his wife, Evelyn, bought the Ford and Mercury Dealership in Osage and operated that business for 26 years until 1970.

On Nov. 25, 1933, Karl was united in marriage with Evelyn Blomsness in Des Moines. They had the "good fortune" to have been married for 66 years.

Karl was involved in a variety of professional and community organizations. He was a faithful member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage. He was a councilman in Osage in 1945 and 1946.

Karl was a charter member of the Osage Rotary, the Osage Development Corporation, and of the Osage Municipal Gas Committee. He also served as a district delegate of the Boy Scouts of America, and was past president of Sunny Brae Golf and Country Club in Osage.

In 1963, Karl took great pride in serving as president of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association. Karl's favorite pastime was golfing before and after his retirement.

For many years, he also looked forward to fishing with his friends in Canada. Hunting, target shooting, gardening and family outings at Spring Park were other activities that he enjoyed. He and Evelyn traveled over the years. His trip to Norway visiting family relatives was one of his most enjoyable times. He was a Norwegian through and through.

Karl is survived by a daughter, Karen Ristau and her husband, Arlyn, of Waverly; and their sons, Randy Ristau, of Missoula, Mont., and Christopher Ristau and his wife, Tina, of Denver, Iowa; and a son, Erik Jorde and his wife, Sally, of Longview, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; as well as eight brothers, Louis, Clarence, Melville, George, Ted, Willard, Ford and Alton; and three sisters, Ruby, Nettie, and Elaine.

EAGLE RIVER, Alaska - Private family services for Jean Determan Shea, 72, of Eagle River, Alaska, were held Feb. 14, 2001, at the Lauterburg-Oehler Funeral Home in Arlington Heights, Ill. Interment was at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Arlington Heights.

Jean Determan Shea died on Feb. 6, 2001, at the Providence Catholic Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.

Jean was born March 3, 1928, in Mason City. She was the daughter of Henry and Josephine (Lynch) Determan. She graduated from Mason City High School, attended UNI and graduated from Colorado State at Boulder, Colo.

She was the Home Economics Director for an electrical power company in Colorado overseeing appliances with demonstrations for the public at the power company. She also wrote radio commercials which encompassed the area.

She later taught high school English in Colorado and Michigan. She retired after working as a sales representative selling office products for 19 years in the Chicago area.

She is survived by three sons, Craig Shea, of Island Lake, Ill., David Shea, of Eagle River, Alaska, and Steven Shea, of Arlington Heights, Ill.; grandchildren, Michael and Crystal Shea; brother, Jack Determan and his wife, Doris, of Clear Lake; brother-in-law, George Lammers, of Streamwood, Ill.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Patricia Lammers.

MITCHELL - Josephine Maakestad, 86, of Mitchell, died Thursday (Feb. 22, 2001) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville. Josephine was born Dec. 24, 1914, in Racine, Wis., the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Krapa) Mostek.

As a small child she moved with her family from Racine to Mitchell, where she attended school.

She was united in marriage to Lenard Maakestad on Oct. 5, 1934, in Osage. They farmed and lived throughout Mitchell County over the years. They were the parents of three children, Jeannette, Lowell and Franklin.

Josephine loved gardening, tending to her animals and spending time with her family and friends.

Della Frances (Reese) Ketchum, the daughter of Fred and Gusta (Kleveter) Reese, was born April 1, 1917, in Reading, Minn. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and began teaching school in a one-room schoolhouse.

She was united in marriage to Paul Ketchum on July 14, 1940, at Council Bluffs. She and Paul farmed for several years near Rowan, before Paul became a train dispatcher in Oelwein. They retired to Sun City, Ariz., for a time, then Bella Vista, Ark., before settling again in Rowan in 1987.

She was an active member of the United Church of Rowan, Women's Fellowship and Alpha Circle, and Progress Club.

She enjoyed playing cards, gardening and cooking for her family and friends. Her family and, especially, her granddaughters were very important to her.

Della died on Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2001) at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge.

She is survived by her son, Bern Ketchum and his wife, Kathy, of Topeka, Kan.; daughter, Linda Williams and her husband, Craig, of Hartland, Wis.; grandchildren, Joey Rae Williams, Randi Lee Williams, Anna Leigh Ketchum, and Ivan Krsticevic.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Paul, in 1992; and four brothers, Elmer, Hiram, Mervin (Pete) and Walter in infancy.

Jack was born the only son of Herbert and Agnes (Ryan) Bender on June 9, 1927, in Estherville. Eight days later the family moved to Mason City. Following his father's death when he was nine years old, his mother remarried Lloyd Kelroy who then adopted Jack.

He attended school at St. Joseph School and later Mason City High School. His schooling was interrupted when he joined the Navy in 1945. He completed his high school degree in December 2000.

His military training was at the Great Lakes Naval Station and he was honorably discharged in June of 1946. He served at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot at Crane, Ind., and USNAD at Hastings, Neb.

Jack was united in marriage to Marcille Vosburgh on Aug. 24, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. To this union were born three children.

He was employed at Coca-Cola for 22 years and then joined the Mason City Fire Department in 1951 until his retirement in 1978. He served as a captain of the Fire Prevention Bureau until his promotion to chief of the bureau.

Jack was a continuous member of the Clausen-Warden American Legion for 42 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge and the Iowa Fire Association.

He loved to hunt deer, pheasant, rabbits and turkey. He fished in the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chein, and in South Dakota at Mobridge and Pierre. Jack always had time for his grand children and great grandchildren as well as enjoying the Cyclone sports, his vegetable garden and camping.

Those who are thankful for sharing in Jack's life include his loving wife of 54 years, Marcille of Mason City; his daughters Marcia and her husband, Gary Stoeffler, of Nevada, and Jane Bender and his son, Mike Bender, both of Mason City; his three grandsons, Shane and his wife, Jody Stoeffler, of Council Bluffs, Shannon and his wife, Kristen Stoeffler, of Knoxville, and Shad and his wife, Amy Stoeffler, of Mason City; and his four great-grandchildren, Sena Marie, Spencer Kade, Brock and Blake Stoeffler, and many very special relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his biological parents; his adoptive father, Lloyd Kelroy; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Virginia was born April 6, 1937, in Mason City, the daughter of Emmanuel and Mabel (Christensen) Frank. She graduated from Holy Family Catholic High School and later from Hamilton Business College.

Virginia was active in Gretchen's Sweets in the late 1950s and ran the restaurant for many years. She then worked with her father at Manuel's Restaurant in Willowbrook Plaza and later in Manly. Virginia spent all her life working in the restaurant business because she enjoyed serving the public.

She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan and collector of clowns. Virginia had a great love of music, which she passed on to her grandchildren, and also enjoyed gambling, helping out her neighbors at the Regency Apartments, and devoting her time to her family.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the St. Gregory Circle, and the Tops group of Mason City.

Virginia will be greatly missed by her three children, Camie Beal and her husband, Don, of Mason City, Carla Berding and her fiancé, Mike Winterink, of Charles City, and Herman Berding Jr. and his wife, Sally, of Mason City; four grandsons, Jason and Brandon Beal, of Mason City and Dustin Berding and Derek Struthers, of Charles City; one grandchild to be born in March; two sisters, Evelyn Platt, of Mason City and Barbara Newby and her husband, Gale, of Surprise, Ariz.; one uncle, Harry Christensen and his wife, Arlene, of Mason City; a good friend, Joe Campbell, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

CRYSTAL LAKE - Edith R. Hartman, 93, of Crystal Lake, died Thursday (Feb. 22, 2001) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

The funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Interment will be in the spring at Crystal Township Cemetery.

Edith Ruth Hartman, the daughter of Edward T. and Nancy (Muller) Hilbrand, was born Dec. 13, 1907, at Bristow. She attended rural school near Bristow.

On Feb. 3, 1927, she was united in marriage to Rhiner Elvin Hartman at Allison. They farmed near Allison until 1940, when they moved to a farm near Crystal Lake. They retired from farming in 1961 and moved into Crystal Lake. After her husband's death in 1970, she continued to live in Crystal Lake. Due to ill health, Edith lived at Westview Care Center in Britt for the past several years.

She enjoyed her family, friends, making birthday cakes for her grandchildren and knitting afghans.

She was a member of the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church and UMW.

She is survived by her three children, Marjorie Sime and her husband, Dale, of Northwood, Jean Helm and her husband, Virgil, of Forest City and Ronald Hartman and his wife, Agnes, of Crystal Lake; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two brothers, John Hilbrand of Herman, Minn. and Harold Hilbrand and his wife, Helena, of Herman, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rhiner, on Aug. 26, 1970; her parents; and a sister, Elnora Bartell.

7BENJAMIN REED VANDENBOSCH

MASON CITY - Benjamin Reed VanDenBosch, 30, of Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 22, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A memorial celebration in his honor will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Christ in Fertile. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be directed to North Central Human Services or Hospice of North Iowa.

Benjamin, son of Bob and Linda "Toby" VanDenBosch, was born Nov. 1, 1970. In 1974 he was critically injured in an accident that left him severely disabled. During his life, Benjy and his family witnessed the love and support of countless family members and friends who volunteered to help with his therapy and care while he resided at home.

Throughout his youth he attended special education programs in Northwood, Kensett, Mason City and Forest City school systems. He was also actively involved in the Church of Christ youth activities.

When he was 13, he moved to NCHS in Forest City, where he lived until shortly before his death. During his years there, his NCHS family involved him in continued therapy programs, activities, and Special Olympics.

He will forever be remembered by his family and friends.

Special survivors are his parents, Bob and Toby VanDenBosch, of Mason City; sisters, Lindsay and Sasha, at home; maternal grandmother, Maxine Tobiasen, of Northwood; paternal grandmother, Jean VanDenBosch, of Fertile; and paternal grandfather, Wayne VanDenBosch and his wife Marilyn, of Lake Mills. He is also survived by four uncles and nine cousins.

Waiting to welcome him in heaven are his maternal grandfather, Bennett Tobiasen; aunt, Vicki Tobiasen; and his great-grandparents.

David Eugene Ammerman, the son of Albert Jay and Janet (Daniels) Ammerman, was born April 1, 1943, at Belmond.

He graduated from Belmond High School, was certified in refrigerator repair service, drove a truck part-time for 23 years and was employed by the City of Belmond.

He was united in marriage to Cecile Huntley on May 6, 1967. To this union three children were born.

David died on Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2001) after a long illness at the Belmond Medical Center.

JACK 'JOHN' H. BENDER

MASON CITY - John "Jack" H. Bender, 73 of 2020 S. Grover Ave., died Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 21, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Revs. Kenneth Gehling and David Kucera officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, with full military rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation was held on Friday at the Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E., with a rosary, Moose Lodge Funeral Rites and a parish wake service.

Jack was born the only son of Herbert and Agnes (Ryan) Bender on June 9, 1927, in Estherville. Eight days later the family moved to Mason City. Following his father's death when he was nine years old his mother remarried Lloyd Kelroy, who then adopted Jack.

He attended school at St. Joseph School and later Mason City High School. His schooling was interrupted when he joined the Navy in 1945. He completed his high school degree in December 2000.

His military training was at the Great Lakes Naval station and he was honorably discharged in June 1946. He served at the US Naval Ammunition Depot at Crane, Ind., and USNAD at Hastings, Neb.

Jack was united in marriage to Marcille Vosburgh on Aug. 24, 1946, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. To this union three children were born.

He was employed at Coca-Cola for 22 years and then joined the Mason City Fire Department in 1951 until his retirement in 1978. He served as a captain of the Fire Prevention Bureau until his promotion to chief of the bureau. Jack was a continuous member of the Clausen-Warden American Legion for 42 years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Moose Lodge, and the Iowa Fire Association. He loved to hunt deer, pheasant, rabbits and turkey. He fished at the Mississippi River at Prairie du Chein, and in South Dakota at Mobridge and Pierre. Jack always had time for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as enjoying the Cyclone sports, his vegetable garden and camping.

Those who are thankful in sharing Jack's life include his loving wife of 54 years, Marcille of Mason City; his daughters, Marcia and her husband, Gary Stoeffler, of Nevada, and Jane Bender, of Mason City; his son, Mike Bender, of Mason City; his three grandsons, Shane and his wife, Jody Stoeffler, of Council Bluffs, Shannon and his wife, Kristen Stoeffler, of Knoxville, and Shad and his wife, Amy Stoeffler, of Mason City; his four great-grandchildren, Sena Marie, Spencer Kade, Brock and Blake Stoeffler; two sisters-in-law, Marlene Borcherding, of Mason City and Delores Vosburgh, of Sheffield; and many very special relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his biological parents; his adoptive father, Lloyd Kelroy; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

OSAGE - Golda May Williams, 94, of Osage died Friday (Feb. 23, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center, St. Ansgar.

Golda was born to Otto L. and Fannie (Nelsen) Nelson at Moulton, on May 3, 1906. The family moved from Moulton to St. Ansgar, where she attended Newburg No. 6 rural school. Golda graduated from Osage High School in 1924. She graduated from Mason City Junior College, and attended Upper Iowa University and the University of Minnesota. She taught at rural schools in Mitchell and Floyd counties. She also taught elementary grades in St. Ansgar and at Sacred Heart in Osage.

Golda was united in marriage to Arthur M. Williams on Dec. 25, 1926, at the First Methodist Church parsonage in Osage. Four children, Garry, Berdene, Marilyn and Hilmore, were born to this union. Golda accepted Christ Jesus as her personal Savior and friend while attending an evening service at the American Sunday School Union Church in Osage. Rev. George Wolf was the minister. She was baptized in Lake Okoboji by Dr. R.R. Brown of Omaha, Neb. Golda was a charter member of the Osage C & M A Church, of the Cedar Valley R T A, and the R T Association. She was an officer and member of the W C T U, Wa-Tan-Ye, and the Osage Women's Club. Long be Golda's memory and the things she has taught us all about living the Christ Life to its fullest. FOREST CITY - Rolf Lund, age 83 of Forest City, died Friday (Feb. 23, 2001) at Winnesheik County Memorial Hospital in Decorah, IA.

Rolf S. Lund was born in Wanamingo, Minn., on Sept. 7, 1917, the son of J.O. and Stella (Swenson) Lund. He received his education in Wanamingo schools and graduated from Zumbrota High School. He continued his education at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. He began teaching and coaching in Rake, Iowa. It was there that he met Bernice Koltvet and on Aug. 6, 1944, they were married at the Holmes Lutheran Church in Holmes, Iowa.

In 1946 Rolf joined the faculty at Waldorf College in Forest City. He earned his Masters Degree in 1952 from the University of Minnesota. Rolf would teach and coach at Waldorf for the next 36 years, until his retirement in 1982. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, serving on the council and on several committees. He was an avid reader, enjoyed working outdoors and was very involved with the efforts to establish a Senior Center in Forest City. Rolf loved to attend sporting events and treasured time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter, Marcia Johnson and husband, Del, of Fergus Falls, Minn.; two sons, Mark Lund and wife, Sonya, of Decorah, and Stephen Lund and wife, Mary, of Norfolk, Neb.; and a sister, Galene Berg of Zumbrota, Minn.; eight grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Bernice, who died in 1997.
