BURNELL TROE

LAKE MILLS - Burnell Troe, 86, died Monday (Jan. 29, 2001) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Emmons Lutheran Church, Emmons, Minn., with the Rev. Julie Fiske officiating. Burial will be at Oak Lawn Cemetery, rural Emmons.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour before the service at the church Friday.

N. (Nels) Burnell Troe, son of Baar N. and Josephine C. (Horvei) Troe, was born Oct. 25, 1914, in Worth County. Burnell was baptized and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood.

On March 26, 1938, Burnell was united in marriage to Stella H. Erickson at Silver Lake.

Burnell was an active member of Emmons Lutheran Church. He farmed all of his life in the Emmons area. He enjoyed horses.

He is survived by his two daughers, Dorothy J. and her husband, Craig Benson, of Lake Mills, and Donna J. and her husband, Larry Bidne, of Emmons, Minn.; five grandchildren, Diane Schulze and her husband, Bruce, of Fertile, Chad Benson of Lake Mills, Jay Bidne and his wife, Wendy, of Emmons, Tammy Fredrickson and her husband, Jason, of Elkton, Minn, and Scott Bidne and his fiance, Joni Halvorson, of Northwood; six great-grandchildren, Steven and Ryan Schulze, Ashley, Logan and Dakota Bidne, and Hunter Fredrickson; three sisters-in-law, Lydia and her husband, Elmer Erickson, Gertrude and her husband, Melvin Erickson, and Hazel and her husband, Lyle Hengesteg; and one brother-in-law, Glenn and his wife, Arlene Erickson.

Burnell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Stella, on Oct. 7, 2000; five sisters, Laura Nesby, Alma Brua, Cora Groe, Hilda Hagen and Eva Sime; two brothers, Helmer Troe and Alvin Troe; and one grandson, Donovan Burnell Hermanson.

LLOYD D. EGGERS

CHARLES CITY - Lloyd D. Eggers, 63, of 600 S. Johnson St., died Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2001) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, U.S. Highway 18 and Clark Street, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. There will be a parish vigil scriptural wake service beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church on Friday.

DAISY LAUGHLIN

WATERLOO - Daisy Laughlin, 72, formerly of Osage, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo.

It was Daisy's wishes that her remains be cremated and that there be no services. The Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, is in charge of the arrangements.

NORA SPRINGS - William H. "Willy" Ross, 75, of the Nora Springs Care Center, formerly of Liberty Square, Nora Springs, and Charles City, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at the care center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis D. Niezwaag, pastor of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

FRANK O. OBERG

WALTERS, Minn. - Frank O. Oberg, 84, died Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2001) at Burr Oak Manor in Austin, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at United Lutheran Church in Walters, Minn., with the Rev. David Jarvis-Schroeder officiating. Interment will be in the United Lutheran Cemetery in rural Walters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home, 255 Second Ave. S.W., Wells, Minn., and will resume one hour before the service at the church Saturday.

Frank O. Oberg was born June 5, 1916, in Twin Lakes, Minn., to Edward and Addie Oberg

He married Shirley Schuster on April 27, 1952, in Albert Lea, Minn.. He farmed all of his life and worked for Leo Donahue near Twin Lakes, Curt Schneider by Conger, Calmer Bidne in Kiester and the Harold Matz Fur Farm for many years. He also worked at Bricelyn Canning Factory.

He was a member of United Lutheran Church in Walters, Minn. He enjoyed visiting with friends and doing the paper route (Albert Lea Tribune).

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Oberg, of Walters, Minn.; four children, Patricia Oberg and special friend, Larry Lowman, of Albert Lea, Minn., Mark and his wife, Penny Oberg, of Mason City, DeAnna and her husband, Steve Kleinschmidt, of Albert Lea, and Roger Oberg of Albert Lea; two grandchildren, Christopher and his wife, Jessica Oberg, and Brandi Oberg, all of Mason City; two brothers, Emil and his wife, Anna Oberg, of Albert Lea, and James and his wife, Dorothy Oberg, of Albert Lea; one sister, Pearl Amundson, Albert Lea; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister-in-law, Betty Oberg; and a brother-in-law, James Amundson.

CLARION - Harold E. Eppel, 79, died Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2001) at Community Memorial Hospital, Clarion.

ST. CLOUD - Raymond J. Derry, 83, of 816 32nd Avenue N., died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Country Manor Health Care Center in Sartell, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, St. Cloud, Minn., with the Rev. Gregory Lieser officiating. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery, St. Cloud.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Daniel Funeral Home, St. Cloud, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Saturday. Parish prayers will begin at 5 p.m., followed by the St. Cloud Knights of Columbus Bishop Zardetti Council No. 5548 at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

HELEN E. FARRAN

ROWAN - Helen E. Farran, 94, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Rowan with the Rev. JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will take place in Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Helen, the daughter of James and Emma Scott Walpole, was born Dec. 12, 1906, in Rock Valley, Iowa. She grew up in Rock Valley where she attended Rock Valley Community Schools and graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1924. After high school Helen attended Iowa State University in Ames, where she received her normal training.

She taught one year of country school south of Rock Valley and then began teaching in Rowan at the Rowan Community School.

Helen was united in marriage with Dale "Curly" Farran on Nov. 27, 1936, in Orange City. The couple made their home in Rowan where they lived their entire married life. Curly passed away in 1963.

Beginning her career in Rowan in 1928, Helen dedicated her life to teaching. While teaching, she continued her education at Iowa State University. She received her bachelor of science degree in June of 1953. In Rowan, Helen taught all grades in many areas, including but not limited to, physical education, English, sciences, foreign languages and home economics. As the Rowan girls basketball coach, Helen took that team to the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament in 1929. She retired from teaching in 1971.

After retirement Helen traveled the world extensively. Besides travel, her hobbies included gardening, quilting, sewing and cooking. Helen is fondly remembered for her homemade candy and rolls. She also enjoyed playing bridge which she played on her last birthday.

Helen was a member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority at Iowa State University and remained an active member throughout her life. Helen was a long-time member of the United Church of Rowan.

She is survived by two nieces, Jean Cowden of Santa Rosa, N.M., and Mary Ann Rebello and her husband, Harvey, of Mechanicsville, Va.; one nephew, Robert Walpole and his wife, Joyce, of Albuqerque, N.M.; 10 great-nieces and nephews; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters and one brother.

MABEL E. MELLEM-MAIN

GRAND MEADOW, Minn.  - Mabel E. Mellem-Main, 87, died Tuesday evening (Jan. 30, 2001) at Stewartville Care Center, Stewartville, Minn. 

A funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Church in Grand Meadow, Minn., with the Rev. Tom Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at Hindt Hutchins Funeral Home, Grand Meadow, and at the church one hour before the service Saturday.

Mabel Eldora Furness was born July 29, 1913, in Banks, N. D., where her parents homesteaded. The family moved to a farm near Hanlontown in 1922.

She married Harold E. Mellem in 1930. They farmed near Northwood and Rock Falls for 13 years and then moved near Grand Meadow in
1955. They farmed there until 1972. They were divorced in 1972. She married Ralph Main in July 1973.

Mabel is survived by three children, Carole (JW) Pagett, Ventura, Calif., Betty Knoepke-Adams, Overland Park, Kan., and Harold Jr. (Katharina) Mellem, Rochester, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-
grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Jennie (Burton) Aasland, Mason City, Evelyn (Harold) Klein, Albuquerque, N.M., Dorothy Schulte, Albert Lea, Minn., and Helen Kingland-
Hanks-Balfe, Nevis, Minn.

Mabel was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold E. Mellem, in November 1977; her second husband, Ralph Main, in April 1991; her
daughter, Joan Russell-Wyatt, in December 1986; a grandson, Dan Russell, in 1999; five brothers; and six sisters.

MILDRED MARIE RYAN

BURLINGTON -Mildred Marie Ryan, 82, died Tuesday (Jan. 30, 2001) at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Lunning Chapel, 2620 Mount Pleasant St., Burlington, with her sons, the Rev. E. Wayne Ryan and the Rev. Larry Ryan, officiating. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Cemetery.

Mildred Marie Ryan was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Burlington, daughter of William H. and Mary Penrod Timmerman.

On Feb. 9, 1935, she married Everrett R. Ryan in Burlington. Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 1983.

They were blessed with seven children: E. Wayne Ryan and wife, Elda, of Mason City, Charlene Crilley and husband, David, of Stoutsville,  Mo., Ronald Ryan and wife, Renae, of Wichita, Kan., Marilyn Wis-
chmeier and her husband, Glen, of Burlington, Barbara Cummings, deceased, Larry Ryan and his wife, Gayla, of Wichita, Kan., and Robert
Ryan and his wife, Paula, of Burlington.

Mildred is survived by four brothers, Fredrick and Robert Timmerman of Burlington, Jack Timmerman of Stuart, Fla., and Harry Timmerman of Palm City, Fla. She has two living sisters, Ruby Stevens of Fredricksburg, Texas, and Dorothy Rodin of Xenia, Ohio.  She is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 41 great-grand-children and four great-great-grandchildren.  Three brothers preceded her in death, Harold, Willis and George Timmerman.

Mildred has been a member of the Free Methodist Church. She worked as unit leader for Stanley Home Products, Montgomery Wards, I.A.A.P. and retired from J.C. Penney's in 1991.

Mildred went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 82 years of age at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington.

Mildred Ryan was like a woman described in Proverbs 31-"Who can find a virtuous woman, for her price is far above rubies. Her children
arise up and call her blessed."

NETTIE WATERMILLER

BELMOND - The funeral for Nettie Watermiller, 93, of Belmond, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond, with the Rev. Melvin Voss officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour before services on Monday at the Church.

Nettie (Dorenkamp) Watermiller, the daughter of Jacob and Rosa (Pals) Dorenkamp, was born in Wright County on March 11, 1907. She attended school in Alexander and graduated from Meservey High School in 1926. She attended college in Cedar Falls and taught school for three years.

Nettie was united in marriage to Jacob Watermiller on Oct. 1, 1930, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. They farmed together on farms around Belmond, while Nettie started teaching again for the next 29 years. She also taught Sunday school for 40 years.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey and, after their marriage, they became members of the Immanuel Reformed Church; then in retirement to Belmond, they became members of the Bethany Reformed Church.

Nettie died on Thursday (Feb. 1, 2001) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

She is survived by a daughter, Marlys Rich and husband, Jack, of Johnston; a son, Marlyn Watermiller and his wife, Jackie, of Des Moines; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters Leona Lieberknecht, of Belmond, Ruth Suntken, of Meservey, Lavonne "Bonnie" Boelman, of Meservey, and Marie Schott, of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Robert "Bud" Dorenkamp, of Lakewood, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Dorenkamp, of Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jacob; son-in-law, Don Toft; brothers, Lester and Louie; and sisters, Ethel, Luella and Martha.

PALMER HELTNE

LAKE MILLS - Palmer Heltne, 91, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Palmer Tilford Heltne was born on Dec. 27, 1909, in rural Lake Mills. He was the first child of Gilbert and Lena (Evenson) Heltne. He was baptized and confirmed (learning the catechism in Norwegian) at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in Worth County.

He attended Silver Lake No. 4 school (the Dahl School) and the Lake Mills High School. He played football, baseball and basketball for the Bulldogs. He graduated in 1926.

Palmer's mother died when he was 11, and after high school he decided to stay home and help his father care for three younger sisters and farm the land homesteaded by his grandfather.

Palmer and Grace Katherine Hanson were married on Aug. 18, 1940. They lived on the family farm which they purchased in 1948. They continued on the farm until 1981 when they sold the farm and moved to a home in Lake Mills.

They were active members of Silver Lake Church and later Salem Lutheran Church.

Palmer loved the soil, the crops he planted as well as the plants and animals still wild on the land. He was adept at rearing cattle and hogs and had a deep commitment to their well-being. He saw our dependence on the land and other living creatures and treated them so that we could be in partnership forever. Horses and horsemanship were a passion, and at one time he judged horse shows.

Palmer served the community in many ways. He was active in school affairs in Silver Lake, in the school consolidation and on the Board of the Lake Mills Community Schools, serving for a time as president of the Board. He also served at various times on the Worth County Fair Board, the Worth County Farm Bureau and was a life-long member of the Democratic Party. Palmer delighted in watching high school athletics and seldom missed listening to or watching the Hawkeye basketball and football games.

Music was also a great love; he played several instruments. Palmer and Grace rarely missed a musical event at the high school or at Salem Church, and they enjoyed going to dances with friends.

Palmer is survived by his wife, Grace, of Lake Mills Care Center; three children, Paul and his wife, Jean Linsner, of Chicago, Ill., Carolyn Heltne of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, Ruth and her husband, Bruce Carlin, of Kingsville, Md.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alva Sorenson of Lake Mills, and Valborg and her husband, Leland Campbell, of St. Cloud, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Harold E. Alford, 79, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A private graveside service will be held Monday at Blairsburg Cemetery, Blairsburg. Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Edward Alford, the son of Adolphus Edison and Pearl (Flowler) Alford, was born May 17, 1921, at Williams, Iowa. At an early age, he moved with his family to Blairsburg where he attended school.

He then moved to California where he was in sales. Harold spent most of his life in California and Las Vegas, Nev., before moving back to Iowa and working at O'Brien Moving and Storage Company in Mason City.

He enjoyed traveling and playing music on the guitar and piano.

Harold is survived by four nephews, Byron Stromer and his wife, Millie, of Garner, Val Stromer and his wife, Millie, of Slater, Velere Stromer and his wife, Juanita, of Klemme, and Lyndon Stromer and his wife, Jeanne, of Denver, Colo.; and two special long-time friends, Edna Ryan and Lillian Jacobson, both of Mason City.

VENTURA - Ardell T. Waddingham, 77, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Ventura, with the Rev. Paul Hasel officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Monday.

Ardell Timothy Waddingham, the son of George Timothy and Anna (Blumer) Waddingham, was born Sept. 14, 1923, on a farm near Klemme. He attended the rural schools south of Ventura and graduated from Ventura High School in 1941. He then farmed with his mother south of Ventura.

On Sept. 24, 1944, he married Tressa Tompkins at the United Methodist Church in Klemme. They lived on the home farm until 1947 when they moved northwest of Ventura to Tressa's home farm. They farmed for a total of 50 years before retiring. Ardell enjoyed his family and grandchildren. He also enjoyed spending winters in Arizona and playing cards with friends.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the church board of trustees and the Hancock County Co-op Oil Board.

Ardell is survived by his wife, Tressa Waddingham, of Ventura; three daughters, Kathy Payne and her husband, Thomas, of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Iris Alt and her husband, Jerry, of Earlham, and Valerie Hasbrouck and her husband, Bruce, of Ventura; and four grandchildren, Tiffany Payne, Judd Payne, Vanessa Hasbrouck and Natalie Hasbrouck.

James was born Nov. 2, 1935, in Forest City, the son of James E. and Opal (DeVries) Dunbar. He graduated from Forest City High School and served in the United States Marines during the Korean War.

After his discharge, Jim returned to Hubbard where he worked as a meat cutter for many years.

James was united in marriage to Dee Knudson on June 25, 1977, in St. Paul, Minn. He worked as a salesman for various fertilizer and chemical companies in the North Iowa area for more than 30 years.

Jim enjoyed the outdoors, including camping, fishing and golfing. He especially enjoyed visiting with people and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 in Manly.

James is survived by his wife, Dee, of Manly; his mother, Opal, of Forest City; two daughters, Mari Lynn Marquard of Houston, Texas, and Keri Dunbar of Mason City; one son (adopted grandson), Cody James Dunbar at home; four granddaughters, Nikki, Emily and Megan Marquard and Kayla Hillman; four brothers, Jerry Dunbar and his wife, Margaret, of Mason City, Mike Dunbar and his wife, Peggy, of Waverly, Bill Dunbar and his wife, Jane, of Wyoming, and Francis Dunbar of Runnells; his mother-in-law, Rena Knudson of Manly; two brothers-in-law, Marty Knudson and his wife, Kay, of Mason City, and Randy Knudson and his wife, Pena Lynn, of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.

Anthony "Tony" Walsh was born Sept. 12, 1937, in Cicero, Ill., to Joseph D. and Anna M. (Kateiva) Walsh. In 1938 his family moved to Mason City where he attended and graduated from Mason City High School.

After high school he entered the U.S. Air Force. When he returned home from the military, he drove truck for Pepsi-Cola and then became a magazine distributor and worked in sales in the Mason City area until his retirement.

Tony enjoyed spending his time golfing and fishing.

Survivors include his brother, Joe Walsh of Glendale Heights, Ill; a cousin, Dan Walsh and his wife, Evelyn, Mason City; a nephew, Joe Jr.; and a niece, Darleen.

Pete Kramer was born March 13, 1921, in Rockwell, to Jake Kramer and Gertrude Klopp. He received his education in the Swaledale-Thornton schools.

Pete was united in marriage to Beatrice Christensen on Jan. 8, 1939, in Thornton. Pete was a farmer.

He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hampton. Pete was also active in the Lions Club. He enjoyed working at the church and doing yard work.

Pete is survived by his wife, Beatrice Kramer, Hampton; his three sons, Delbert Kramer, Des Moines, Larry and his wife, Janet Kramer, Omaha, Neb., and Rick Kramer, Denver, Colo.; three brothers, Paul Kramer, Torrance, Calif., Marvin Kramer, Council Groves, Kan., and Ralph Kramer, Sheffield; and four sisters, Alfina Jones, Grace Faber, Dena Riggins-Colby and Dorothy Deam, all of Mason City.

John was born on May 8, 1939, one of three children of James and Margaret (McCarty) Winger in Keokuk. He graduated from Mason City High School and then Mason City Junior College. He finished his teaching degree at the University North Iowa and later received his master's degree at the University of Iowa.

He taught middle school at Monroe and then finished his career at Roosevelt teaching for more than 30 years, retiring in 2000. During those years he devoted a lot of love, devotion and energy into his classes.

John was united in marriage to Denyse Hurley on June 14, 1969, in Mason City. John remained a very active member and officer in many fine organizations. He served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus No. 1006, as past district deputy for the state, and achieved the 4th degree. With Mason City Elks Lodge No. 375, he served as a Past Exalted Ruler and as Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler and was the current Esquire. He was also a member of the Moose and had served as the past president of the Mason City Education Association. John was active with the Republican Party on both the local and state levels. He was a devout member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was an avid Hawkeye fan.

Those left to cherish John's memory include his daughter, Ann and her special friend, David Clark, Mason City; his son, John and his wife, Amy, Winger, St. Louis Park, Minn.; one sister, Mary "Mern" and her husband, Loel Lowary, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; one brother, James and his wife, Rozanne Winger, Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Rheon Wolske, Ankeny, and Janet Cuevas, Dallas, Texas; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his long time companion, Sue Sniegocki and her children, Jill, Krista, Steve, and Mike and their families.

John was a cherished father and friend. From tailgates to political debates his laughter and love will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.

He was proceeded in death by his wife, Denyse in 1987, and their infant son, Daniel.

Mathilda A. Freeden was born Jan. 26, 1903, in Madison, Wis., to William and Marie (Leitz) Buege. She attended Madison High School and attended nurses training in West Side Hospital, Chicago.

She returned to Madison where she worked at St. Mary's Hospital.

On Sept. 8, 1927, she was united in marriage with Carl R. Freeden in Alliance, S.D. They moved to Mason City where she worked at the Park Hospital for over 30 years.

Mathilda was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and the church circle as well as formerly a member of the Tenth District Nurses Association.

She enjoyed gardening and giving away her produce.

Mathilda is survived by her daughter, Marie Whipple and her husband, Lon, Rock Falls; a son, Robert Freeden and his wife, Marlene, Mason City; grandsons, Michael Freeden, Opportunity Village, Robert Whipple and his wife, Roxanne, Rock Falls, and Lee Whipple and his wife, Kelly, Waseca, Minn.; a granddaughter, Carlene Gonerman, Mason City; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandsons.

Ernest Lewis Miller was born on Dec. 8, 1907, at Thief River Falls, Minn., to Lawrence Lewis and Mathilda Reed. Ernest was schooled in country schools near Thief River Falls then moved with his family to the Franklin County area.

On Nov. 13, 1928, Ernest was married to Cleone Marie Walker in Cherokee, Iowa. The couple moved back to Franklin County where Ernest farmed for several years.

In 1936, they moved to Chapin where Ernest was employed by Franklin County Highway Department for 38 years. The couple continued to live in Chapin after retirement.

Ernest became a resident of the Hampton Health Care Center in May 2000. He died there on Friday, Feb. 2, at the age of 93.

Ernest enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting and was very active in the Salem United Methodist Church in Chapin.

Suvivors include his son, Kenneth W. Miller and his wife, Anna, of Mesa, Ariz.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Lee Miller of Rogue River, Ore.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Cleone in 1992; one son, James A. Miller on Aug. 29, 1994; and seven brothers and sisters.
