FLORENCE E. RICHARDSON

MASON CITY - Florence E. Richardson, 84, of Mason City, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., and also for one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Florence E. Richardson Memorial Fund.

Florence was born Oct. 27, 1916, in Ionia, the daughter of Charles and Martha (Moeller) Faber. She grew up in Ionia, graduating from Ionia High School. She then moved to Mason City and graduated from La James Beauty School.

Florence worked as a hairdresser in Mason City until she was united in marriage to Don E. Richardson on July 20,1941, at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Florence was a homemaker and seamstress at Lundberg's and Damon's Department Stores in Mason City for several years.

Her hobbies centered on art, including ceramics, painting and various crafts, and nature, including growing flowers, gardening and bird watching. Florence's faith life at St. James Lutheran Church and her friends there were an extremely important part of her life.

She was an active member of the Friendship Society, the "Do-Day Ladies," the Altar Guild and Ladies Aid. She was also a charter member of the McNider Art Museum and a member of the River City Society for Historic Preservation.

Florence is survived by two sons, John Richardson and his wife, Marge, and Tom Richardson and his wife, Vicki, all of Mason City; five grandchildren, Keith Richardson of Amherst, Mass., and Tom Richardson Jr. and his wife, Jackie, Cheri Peterson and her husband, Troy, Abbe Richardson and Samantha Richardson, all of Mason City; one great-grandchild, Mercedes Lestrud, of Mason City, one brother, Paul Faber and his wife, Rita, of Ionia; and two nieces, Rhonda and Tami Faber of Ionia.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don, one sister, Elsie Faber Kranz; and two brothers, Clarence and Arnold Faber.

MARIAN IRENE (STATE) ARENDS

BELMOND - Marian Irene (State) Arends died of congestive heart failure on Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at the Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A funeral service for Marian I. Arends will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Rowan in Rowan with the Rev. JoAn Skyrme officiating. Burial will take place in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan. Casket bearers will be her grandsons, Forrest, Todd, and Lance Aldrich, Robert and David Zangel, and Jason, Casey, and Justin Arends.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Dugger Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Marian was born near Galt, Iowa, on Aug. 21, 1919, the daughter of Charles Archie and Verna (Winslow) State. She attended Lincoln # 6 country school until 8th grade. Her first two years of high school were at Galt, and the last two years were at Iowa Falls, where she graduated in 1936. Two years later she was united in marriage to John Henry Arends at the Little Brown Church on April 20, 1938. They moved to a farm south of Belmond in 1949. After her husband's death in 1998 she continued to live on the home place, because it was her favorite place to be.

Writing prose and poetry gave her great joy, and she has left a treasured legacy of family history, as well as various other essays that reflect her humor and insight. She enjoyed the beauties of nature, especially watching all the birds that would gather around the feeders outside her picture window. She will be remembered for her gentle, sweet spirit, her patience, her acceptance of what life held for her, and her love of her family. Marian was a member of the United Church of Rowan.

She is survived by her five children and their spouses. They are: Gloria and Bob Zangel of Las Vegas, Nev., Lynne and Lee Aldrich of Belmond, John and Judy Arends of Colorado Springs, Colo., Dale and Trese Arends of Belmond, and Alison and Sherman McNeal of Cedar Falls. In addition to her five children, she is survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Sharon Wilkinson, Robert and David Zangel, Forrest, Todd, and Lance Aldrich, Heather Kunce, Gretchen Bouknight, Tiffany Arends, Jason, Casey, and Justin Arends, and Grace and Lucia McNeal. Her eleven great-grandchildren are Jessica, April, Katrina, and Tyler Wilkinson, Kaitlyn, Caroline, and Marianne Aldrich, Ryan Aldrich, Haley Kunce, Sierra Bouknight, and Vanessa Arends; two sisters, Marvel Box of Rowan and Berniece Andrews and husband, Ryle, of Belmond; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Henry, and an infant granddaughter, Lorelei Aldrich.

EMMONS, MINN. - Russell O. Schmidthuber, 88, of Emmons, Minn., died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at Albert Lea Medical Center.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Emmons Lutheran Church, Emmons, Minn., with the Rev. Julie Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Lime Creek (Stateline) Cemetery, rural Emmons.

THORNTON - Ruth V. Miller, 87, of Thornton died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at the Sheffield Care Center, Sheffield.

IRENE B. HOLLAND

FOREST CITY -Irene B. Holland, 81, of Forest City, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.


A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home in Forest City.

Irene B. Holland was born on a farm north of Crystal Lake, on Aug. 25, 1919, the daughter of Irving and Oliva (Morem) Charlson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She received her education in country school near her home and attended Forest City High School. She began what was to be a lifetime career in cooking as a young girl of 16, working for families as a cook. At 18 she began working at House's Restaurant as a dishwasher and then as a second cook in 1936.

She married Standly Holland on Oct. 1, 1939. The couple made their home on his father's farm for a time. Irene was a homemaker and raised five children, three boys and two girls: Charles, Ronald, Michael, DeAnn & Charlene. The family moved to Leland in 1962. Irene began working in restaurants again as a cook. She worked at the Totem Pole for five and a half years, for Ray Peterson, House's Restaurant, the Winnebago County Home for three years, the Forest City Hospital, the Good Samaritan Center and at the Forest City School for 13 years. Her husband passed away in 1981 and Irene retired in 1984 at age 65. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City and active in the Rachel Circle.

She is survived by two sons: Charles Holland and his wife, Marilyn, of Forest City, and Ronald Holland and his wife, LaRae, of Forest City; daughter Charlene Amadore and her husband, Don, of Mesa, Ariz., also, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, her brother, Amery Charlson of Swea City; and a sister, Mavis Berhow, of Dakota City.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Standly, a brother, Willard Charlson and an infant brother.

LAWRENCE G. "LARRY" CARMANY

MASON CITY - Lawrence G. "Larry" Carmany, 78, of Mason City, died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at his home.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Mason City.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence G. "Larry" Carmany was born June 5, 1922, in Plymouth, the son of Dewey and Tena (Bartes) Carmany. After graduating from Plymouth High School he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Camp Hood, Texas (Tank Battalion). His service in the Army took him to Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Germany. He was discharged after years in the service, receiving the Bronze Star. Following his discharge from the Army he worked for five years in Charles City. He later moved to Mason City where he started his painting/contracting business. He was proud to have worked on many projects in North Iowa including schools, churches, motels, homes and the Commercial Building. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed "antiquing" and going to many auctions. He also enjoyed taking care of his dogs over the years.

Those left to cherish his memory include a brother, Don Carmany and his wife, Bernice, of Coon Rapids, Minn.; sisters, Nellie Prindle and husband, Don, of Mason City, Dorothy Smith, of Mason City, and Evelyn Walsh and husband, Dan, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ernest, a nephew and a great nephew.

MASON CITY - Hilda E. Diercks Vierkant, 95, of 1106 Sixth St. S.E., died Friday (Feb. 9, 2001) at the Rockwell Care Center, Rockwell.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Richard D. Scheerer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

RAYMOND E. WICKS

BELMOND - Raymond E. Wicks, 71, of Belmond passed away Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001) in Mesa, Ariz.

A funeral service for Raymond E. Wicks will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with the Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Ray, the son of Cryder and Nettie Erickson Wicks, was born May 15, 1929, in Wright County, near Kanawha. He grew up south of Kanawha. Ray was baptized and confirmed at the St John Lutheran Church near Kanawha. He attended country schools and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1948.

Ray was united in marriage with Imogene Cook on Oct. 3, 1949, in Minneapolis, Minn. The couple made their home south of Kanawha where Ray farmed. In 1974, Ray and Imogene moved to Belmond where Ray worked as a salesman for Newton Manufacturing. He would later work for the Eaton Corporation for nine years. Ray and Imogene had spent the last seven winters in Arizona.

Ray loved sports, most notably baseball. He began playing baseball in high school and continued, after high school, on local baseball teams in Kanawha and Belmond. He also played on the Kinseth Plumbing fast pitch softball team in Belmond. Ray umpired high school baseball and also did play-by-play for KRIT Radio in Clarion. He very much enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and kept a close tab on the Belmond-Klemme Broncos. Ray enjoyed woodworking and giving his wood creations to family and friends alike.

Ray was a past member of the Kanawha Jaycees and Lutheran Brotherhood. He was a member of both St John Lutheran Church near Kanawha, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond.

Ray is survived by his wife, Imogene; three daughters, Cindy Bailey and her husband, Bill, of Davenport, Connie Wicks of Iowa City, and Chris Huffman and husband, Joel, of Sergeant Bluff; four grandchildren, Jeff, Amy, Justin and Jordan; one great-grandson, Alex; three sisters, Maxine Maland and husband, Paul, of Charles City, Carole Basler of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and LaVonne Nosbusch of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Iola Wicks of Chandler, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Randy in 1996; two babies, Mary Jane and Tommy Ryan, and two brothers, Orville and Everett.

LOLA MARIE BOOMGARDEN

MASON CITY - Lola Marie Boomgarden, 80, of 503 15th St. N.W., died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Officiating will be the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home Monday.

Lola was born March 19, 1920, the daughter of Roscoe and Elsie Julia Burgess in Palo. On Oct. 23, 1938, Lola was united in marriage to Martin Boomgarden in Albert Lea, Minn. Lola started out working as a Decker's employee and 22 years later retired as an Armour employee. She retired in 1973.

Lola and Martin enjoyed the outdoors while being involved with the Wig Wam and Wagon Campers, and the Happy Campers Club, in which Lola was the former treasurer. Lola and Martin spent 22 winters as "Winter Texans" in the warmth and out of the snow and cold. Lola looked forward to going camping, spending time with her family, or playing cards. She attended St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Those thankful for having shared in Lola's life include her husband, Martin, of Mason City; three daughters, Sally Craig and her husband, Bob, of Mason City, Ruth Kellar and her husband, John, of Napa, Idaho, Jean Dunbar and her husband, Mike, of Nora Springs; one son, Martin Boomgarden Jr. and his wife, Joanne, of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Joanne Anderson and her husband, Dan, of Clear Lake, Betty Steece and her husband, Spence, of Mason City; one brother, Jack Burgess and his wife, Delores, of Sheffield; one sister-in-law, Margaret Burgess, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth Viola Miller was born on Sept. 28, 1913, in Wisner Township of Franklin County, to Edward and Leona Hofermann Hartwig. Ruth attended country school for seven years, then graduated from Thornton High School in 1931.

Ruth married Marvin M. Miller on Aug. 10, 1939, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thornton. The couple farmed near Thornton until retiring in 1980 and moving into Thornton. Ruth became a resident of the Sheffield Care Center in September 1996.

Survivors include one daughter, Marladean and her husband, John C. (Butch) DeVries, of Thornton; two granddaughters, Kris and husband, Joe Wirth, of Apple Valley, Minn., and Kim and husband, Neal Suntken, of Omaha, Neb.; four great granddaughters, Ashley and Taylor Wirth and Erin and Abigail Suntken; and one niece, Kay Ann Conaway.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Marvin, in April 1988 and one brother, Glen.

Hilda was born Sept. 21, 1905, in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Christina (Anderson) Busse. She came to Mason City with her family at an early age and later graduated from Mason City High School.

She married David D. Diercks Feb. 10, 1925. He died on July 1, 1959. Hilda married Benjamin W. Vierkant on Oct. 14, 1961 in Mason City. Hilda was employed as office manager at the Girl Scout office in Mason City for seven and a half years. She was also involved in farming. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was a member for more than 40 years. She served as Kitchen Chairperson for 19 years. Hilda was a long-time member of the Elks Lodge and was a charter member of the Does. She was a member of the Moose Lodge, Pleasant Ridge Family Club, Pleasant Ridge Women's Club and the Mason City Women's Club. She was a member and served in many offices including the presidency of the Rake & Hoe Garden Club. Hilda served as secretary of the Mason Township School Board for 24 years. Hilda enjoyed music, dancing, bowling, rifle shooting tournaments, playing cards, cooking, entertaining and gardening.

He was an avid collector of steam engines and other railroad items. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Attending outdoor church services in the summer was one of Tanner's favorite things. He enjoyed the opportunity to meet new people and shake their hands during service. He was an extraordinary child who made the most of each and every day. Alverta was united in marriage with Everett F. Johnson on March 8, 1947, in Myerstown, Pennsylvania. Following their marriage the couple moved to Kanawha. Everett passed away in 1983, and Alverta continued to make her home in Kanawha.

Alverta is survived by one daughter, Esther and her husband, Jim Quairoli, of Myerstown, Pennsylvania; two sons, Dennis Johnson, of Des Moines, and Allen (A.J.) and his wife, Jo Ellen Johnson, of Kanawha; one grandson, Christopher; one sister, Janice and her husband, George Bowman, of Lakefield, Minn.; one brother, LaRoy and wife, Irene Moyer, Myerstown, Pennsylvania; and her cat Muffin.

Esther was born Aug. 31, 1913, in Hancock County, Iowa, the daughter of Klaus K. and Mary (Saatoff) Pals. She started country schools in Cerro Gordo County then later attended Klemme High School.

She married Bernard Beek on Feb. 12, 1935, in Clear Lake. They farmed in the North Iowa area for many years before retiring and moving to Mason City.


She was an extremely take-charge person with the farming operation, making a great co-partner with her husband. She was employed by the city of Mason City as a school crossing guard for more than 20 years.

She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, involved in the Esther Circle, along with being active in the Farm Bureau Bath Farm Women.

She is survived by three sons, Gary E. Beek and his wife, Florence, of Greene, Craig M. Beek and his wife, Nancy, of Moline, Ill., and Dennis L. Beek and his wife, Linda, of Mason City; granddaughters, Diana Pieper and her husband, David, of West Des Moines, and Michelle Beek, of Mason City; grandsons, Gregory Beek and his wife, Charlie, of Franklin, Tenn., Kirk Beek and his wife, Sarah, of Moline, Ill., Rodney Beek, of Mason City, Terry Beek and his wife, Carla, of Charles City, Dallas Beek, of Campbell, Calif., Bradley Beek and his wife, Grace, of Mason City, and Jason Beek, of Mason City; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Clarence Pals and his wife, Millie, of Forest City; and numerous nieces and nephews.

ROBERT H. LOUNSBERRY

McCALLSBURG - Robert H. Lounsberry, 64898 160th St., died of heart failure on Saturday (Feb. 10, 2001) at Story County Medical Center in Nevada, Iowa.

Robert Horace Lounsberry was born on June 22, 1918, in Carlisle, Iowa, to H.C. and Alice Elmore Lounsberry. He then lived in Colo from 1919 until 1933 when he moved to the current family farm near McCallsburg. He graduated from McCallsburg High School in 1935 and was a member of the state tournament basketball team that year.

He went on to Luther College at Decorah where he earned a double major in biology and chemistry and also participated and lettered in football, basketball and track. He attended two years of graduate studies at the University of Iowa, then enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. He qualified for pilot training and became a U.S. Air Force B-24 pilot serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in World War II. He flew a full tour of combat missions, receiving several military honors including the Distinguished Flying Cross, four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Second Lieutenant in 1945 and returned to Story County to begin farming there.

He married Muriel Dirks of Decorah on Aug. 2, 1942. To this union six children were born. He was very active and a longtime member of a variety of professional and community organizations, serving in many leadership positions on the local, state and national level.

He was a 50-year Mason, 50-year member of VFW and a lifetime member of the American Legion, serving as Iowa State Commander and National Committeeman. He was a charter member and past president of the McCallsburg Lions Club. He and Micki were chosen for the Lion's Citizens of the Year award in 1994.

He was a longtime member of the McCallsburg Presbyterian Church, where he served as ruling elder, Presbytery Delegate; Sunday school teacher and choir member.

He was active in the Republican Party, serving on the local, county, district and state levels. He also served many years on the Iowa State Fair Board, the Iowa Arboretum Board, Iowa Association of School Boards and Iowa Boys State and Iowa Farm Bureau. He participated in several agricultural trade missions across the U.S. and led tours promoting Iowa products to Germany, Japan, Egypt, Hong Kong, China, Israel and Italy.

He entered state government as Deputy Secretary of Agriculture in 1969. He was then elected Iowa Secretary of Agriculture in 1972, re-elected in 1974, 1978, 1982 and served until retiring on Jan. 3, 1987.

He received many honors from vocational agriculture, 4-H commissions, state committees, commodity groups and other state organizations. He served as president for Mid-America International Trade Council, Midwest Association of State Departments of Agriculture and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Muriel; five children, William Lounsberry of McCallsburg, Beth Rumph of Plano, Texas, Janet King of Cedar Rapids, Paul Lounsberry of Columbia, S.C. and Steven Lounsberry of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by grandchildren, Melissa Lounsberry, Janet Rumph, Brian Rumph, Nathan King, Zachary King, Michael Lounsberry, Kerri Whitley, Kristin Thompson, Jordan Lounsberry, Andrew Lounsberry, Jeffrey Lounsberry and Sara Lounsberry; and great-grandchildren Bristen and Loren Whitley.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, with interment at the Colo Cemetery.

Vickie was a child care technician at St. Vincent's Infant Hospital in Chicago, Ill. in 1968 through 1969. She also attended Hamilton Business School, NIACC and along with her former husband, Kim Green, served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, receiving an honorable discharge in 1973.

Prior to her illness, Vickie was employed by the University of Utah with the Independent Study, Department of Continuing Education.

She was active in her church, an avid collector of bells, enjoyed spending time researching genealogy, and crocheting afghans for family, friends and children's hospitals.

Donald was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Little Cedar, the son of Henry and Mary (Heiden) Conrad. He attended school and graduated from Little Cedar in 1942.

Donald served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. He made the invasions of Saipan and Iwo Jima in World War II. He served as an amphibian tractor operator. He was awarded a Purple Heart, two Silver Stars, and other medals.

After the war, he worked for the Mitchell County Highway Department for 30-plus years as a grader operator. He loved all sports and played basketball and baseball for quite a few years. He was an avid gardener.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church in Little Cedar, with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Inurnment will be at the Liberty Township Cemetery in Little Cedar at a later date. There will be a gathering of friends and family from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. He is survived by a sister-in-law, a brother-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

FOREST CITY - Robert Goranson, 77, of Forest City, died Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating.

Burial will be in the spring at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 tonight at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, and one hour prior to service at the church.

Robert James Goranson was born Aug. 26, 1923, on a farm near Thompson, the son of James and Olive (Opdahl) Goranson. His education started in country schools in Winnebago County and he graduated from Leland High School in May 1941. He worked for several farmers and farmed with his father until 1950, when he started farming on his own.

On Feb. 2, 1950, he married Helen Dunn at the United Methodist Church in Forest City. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of town until 1954, when they moved to their present home northwest of Forest City.

Robert was an active member of the United Methodist Church, serving on several boards through the years. He served on the Forest City Co-op Elevator Board of Directors for 18 years, serving as president for several years. He spent many years measuring acres and grain for the A.S.C.S. and was also the county committeeman from Forest Township. At the time of his death, he was serving on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors and a member of the Foundation Board of the Methodist Church.

He was very proud of his family and enjoyed attending all the activities of his children when they were in school, and he really enjoyed his seven grandchildren. He looked forward to their visits, especially the family outing in Dubuque each year. His trips to town for coffee with friends were a daily event when his health permitted him to go. He never wanted to miss bowling on Wednesdays with the group of seniors who had become his special friends, and he loved challenging his daughter-in-law to a game of 500.

A special day in his life was the party his children planned to celebrate his and Helen's 50th wedding anniversary. He was amazed at all the friends and family who came to help them celebrate the day. He was also proud to represent the Kum-Along Club as its king in the Puckerbrush Day parade.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Helen, of Forest City and their four children: Roberta Kleckner and husband, Arnold, of Mason City; Glen and wife, Nancy, of Brookfield, Wis.; Roger and wife, Marcia, of Southaven, Miss.; John and his wife, Wanda, of Waukee, and the seven grandchildren: Matthew and Nathan Kleckner, Amelia, Liberty, Ryan, Janna and James Goranson. Also surviving him is a sister, Phyllis Johnson and husband, Ivan, of Forest City, a brother Alan, of Lake Mills, an aunt, Gladys Kroeze, of River Falls, Wis., two sister-in-laws, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. GARNER - William F. Gilbert, 74, of Garner, died Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) at the Concord Care Center.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Clyde Kieschnick and Robert Bronson officiating. Interment will be at Concord Township Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

William Frederick Gilbert, the son of William F. and Edith (Pike) Gilbert, was born Nov. 5, 1926, at Mason City. He attended school at Garner where he graduated from high school in 1944. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II. After the service, he worked as an electrician in Tripp, S.D.

On Aug. 13, 1948, he married Delores Breitkreutz at her mother's home in Tripp. They moved to Garner where Bill worked for Hancock County Co-op Oil, Gjellefald Association in Forest City and then IMT in Garner, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed his family, friends and playing cards.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the Garner V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, Delores, of Garner; five children, Larry Gilbert and his wife, Pat, of Princeton, Mo., and their three children, Angi, Nickolas and Stephanie, Willie Gilbert and his wife, Beth, of Princeton, Mo., and their three children, Mindy, Adam and Emily, Kim Gilbert of Garner and his two children, Jeni and Michael, and his granddaughter, Maddison, Rick Gilbert and his wife, Diane, of Garner, and Jolene Howie and her husband, Jeff, of Garner, and their three children, Billy, Jesse and Morgan; and a sister, Amy Ross, of San Bernardino, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Gilbert, in 1975; his granddaughter, Maggie Mae Howie; his parents; a sister, Kathryn Hansen, and a brother, Warren Gilbert.

THOMPSON - Hilda J. Olsen, 89, died Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with the Rev. Mark Decker officiating. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Thompson.

Hilda Julia Olsen was born Feb. 14, 1911, to John and Karine (Lillevik) Gjertson on a farm near Woden. She was baptized and confirmed at Grant Lutheran Church, rural Woden. She attended country school and completed her high school education at Forest City, graduating in 1929. She taught country school for several years prior to her marriage.

On June 12, 1938, she married Ingvald Olsen. They lived on a farm near Leland and moved in March 1941 to a farm west of Thompson. In 1975 they moved to her present location northwest of Thompson.

She enjoyed working outdoors with gardening and flowers. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and actively involved in circles and the women's organizations.

Two sons survive her, Roger and his wife, Betty Ann, of Thompson, and their children, David of Thompson, James of Sheboygen, Wis., and his fiancee, Karen Whiteside, of Oakdale, Minn., and Irven and his wife, Mary Ann, of Thompson, and their children, Michael and his wife, Amy, and their children, Nathan, Jacob and Gretchen, all of Mankato, Minn., Steven of Thompson, Kristine and her fiance, Brian Schwartz, of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Kathy of Ames; and two sisters, Marie Gjertson of Thompson and Elizabeth Haugen of Forest City.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ingvald, in 1998; one brother, Gerhard; and one sister, Anna.

Adina was born Aug. 16, 1903, in Tripp, S.D., the daughter of Gottfried and Christina (Friederich) Bietz. Adina was baptized Sept. 6, 1903, at Dennewitz Church and confirmed March 24, 1918, in Tripp.

She married Arthur Brosz Feb. 3, 1923, in Tripp. They moved to Mason City in 1956 where Adina was a long-time member of St. James Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Do-Day Ladies. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting.

Adina is survived by two sons, Roland Brosz and his wife, Deloris, of Mason City, and their children, Jo Ann, Mark and Sandra, and Melvin Brosz and his wife, Mary, of Dallas, Texas, and their children, Debra, Charles, Dina, David and Dena; one daughter, Verna Anderson and her husband, Glenn, of Mason City, and their children, Michael and Jeffrey; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Erna Brosz, of Tripp, S.D.

ORVILLE KOPPEN

BUFFALO CENTER - Orville Koppen, 84, died Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Orville Koppen was born Aug. 27, 1916, to Otto and Edna Pearle (Smith) Koppen at Buffalo Center. As a small boy he moved with his parents to Lakota. He was educated in the Lakota schools, graduating in 1935.

On Dec. 27, 1940, he was united in marriage to Leila Hanson at the Methodist Church in Lakota. They farmed in the Lakota area until 1952, then moved to a farm northeast of Buffalo Center. In December of 1979, they moved to their present home in Buffalo Center.

He was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church which he served as Sunday school superintendent for 25 years. He also was a lay leader and chairman of the Administrative Board. He began doing the tape ministry in 1984 and enjoyed his visits with the shut-ins for many years. He also served his church in many other capacities.

Orville served on the Winnebago County Extension Council. He was an active member of the Buffalo Center Lions, served as district Diabetes Chairman for 10 years, was a Melvin Jones Fellow and was district public relations chairman at the time of his death.

Orville enjoyed his flowers , his garden, doing small wood projects, repairing small appliances, visiting family and friends, and especially time spent with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Leila; two daughters, Phyllis and her husband, Jerry Aufderhar, of Le Sueur, Minn., and Rochelle and her husband, Sam Fisher, of Boone; a granddaughter, Kristin and her husband, John Skelly, of Henderson, Minn.; two grandsons, Ron Ensley and his wife, Jennifer, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mike Ensley and his wife, Kori, of West Des Moines; two step-grandchildren, Jordan Fisher and his wife, Allison, of Boone, and Brooke Fisher of Los Angeles.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Clyde, Howard and Wayne.

ROCKWELL - Wilma Harriet Haugen, 77, of 117 Third St. N., died Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Wilma was born June 27, 1923, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Alfred and Grace (Julsen) Foster. Wilma was raised and attended school in Kensett where she completed the eighth grade.

She would later be introduced to the love of her life, Harold Haugen, and on March 1, 1941, they were united in marriage. Harold and Wilma farmed in Bolan for one year before moving to Northwood to continue farming for a year, then moved to Mason City. In 1947, Wilma and Harold made their home to Rockwell.

In Wilma's day-care one could always hear the pattering feet of little ones as they scurried around the house keeping her extremely busy. At the age of 62 she retired to find herself as busy with her family, church and traveling with her husband, children and grandchildren. Their travels took them to Canada, northern Minnesota, Washington, Colorado, Branson, Mo., and Bay City, Wis.

She was a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church and of Mary's Circle. Wilma enjoyed watching nature take its course and fishing the waters no matter what objects she might snag onto. She had the heart and the touch for creating mouth-watering pies and homemade noodles. Wilma and Harold loved kicking their heels up at the Surf Ballroom, making their own rhythm with the beat of their hearts, letting their love and affection gracefully carry them across the dance floor.

Wilma's smile was a mile wide that always touched your heart. She loved all holidays to reminisce and create new memories with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and her dog, Smokey.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Haugen, of Rockwell; two daughters, Wanda and her husband, Deets Neve, of Rockwell, and Linda and her husband, Darwin Watt, of Sheffield; three sons, Bob Haugen and his wife Kay, and Gary Haugen and wife, Mary Ellen, of Rockwell, and Larry Haugen and wife, Laurie, of Mason City; one sister, Vivian Piper of Mason City; nine grandchildren: Kristy and her husband, Rod Molencamp, of Clear Lake, Dave Neve and his wife, Sue, of Mason City, Teresa and her husband, Mark Nelson, of Clear Lake, Darwin Watt Jr. and his special friend, Bobbie, of Phoenix, Ariz., Ty Watt and his fiancée, Sandy, Josh Watt and his fiancée, Jodie, Sarah and Scott Haugen, all of Mason City, and Scott Hejna of Garner; 12 great grandchildren: Ryan and Tim Molencamp, Erin and Elisa Dohlman, and Emilee Nelson, all of Clear Lake, McKenzie and Trevor Neve, Alicia, Tyler, Skyler and Ashley Watt, and Mikala Hadacek, all of Mason City.

GREENE - Ellen Clikeman, 79, of 2149 300th St., died Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, of complications of surgery.

Ida Ellen Doty was born July 11, 1921, in Dayton Township, Butler County, a daughter of Mitchell Randolph and Ida Ellen (Metcalf) Doty.

She received her education in and graduated from the Clarksville High School. She attended the Pitze Beauty School in Waterloo and later worked as a beauty operator in Sumner.

Ellen was united in marriage to Ivan Guy Clikeman on July 27, 1941, at the St. Peter Lutheran parsonage in Greene. Ivan and Ellen worked hard together for 57 years keeping the farm going and raising a family.

Ellen will be remembered for her abilities as a gardener and as one who enjoyed making flower arrangements from her garden. She also enjoyed baking wedding cakes for family and friends, creating ceramics and playing cards. She was a member of the Chat-a-While Club and local bowling teams and was a 4-H leader for many years.

Ellen was baptized and confirmed as a member of St. Peter Lutheran church on March 22, 1942. She was a faithful member of the church and served on the Altar Guild for many years.

Edna Bisbee was born Nov. 29, 1902, on the family farm in Union Township near Stacyville, the daughter of Fredrick and Emma (Smith) Decker. She was educated in rural schools.

Edna was united in marriage to Bradford Bisbee on April 28, 1921, at the Decker family farm. They farmed on the Decker family farm near Stacyville. They retired in 1955 and moved to Osage. Bradford died Jan. 30, 1978.

Edna was a member of the Osage United Church of Christ and the ladies fellowship . She enjoyed her family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Gaarder-Williams and her husband, Bob, of Santa Fe, N. M., and her five children, Carole Hicks of Albuquerque, N. M., Cheryl Dix of Albuquerque, N. M., Chris Gaarder of Albuququerque, N. M., Cosetta Lewis of Deming, N. M., and Casandra Petrik of Phoenix, Ariz.; a son, Neil Bisbee and his wife, Lucille, of Stacyville, and their four children, Harlan Bisbee of McIntire, Joyce Rachut of Osge, Kay Ferris of Sterling, Ill., and Jerry Bisbee of Stacyville; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
