MERLE STEINMETZ

FOREST CITY - Merle Steinmetz, 81, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery, Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, Forest City, and will resume one hour before the service at the church Thursday.

Merle C. Steinmetz was born on a farm in Madison Township, Hancock County, near Forest City, on April 29, 1919, the son of Clayton and Pauline (Erickson) Steinmetz. He received his education in Forest City, graduating from Forest City High School in 1936.

He married Tharon Albertson on Nov. 17, 1940, at the Scandinavian Methodist Church in Forest City. The couple began farming in Madison Township and continued until Merle retired from farming in 1965.

It was around this time that he began working for the Forest City School District, initially as a school bus driver and then as a member of the janitorial staff. The couple moved to their present home in Forest City in October of 1973. Merle retired from the school in 1985.

He was a member of United Methodist Church in Forest City where he mowed and cared for the grounds. He also cared for the lawns of many other Forest City residents. He loved to do yard work and raised beautiful flowers.

He enjoyed attending programs and activities that his grandchildren were involved in.

Merle is survived by his wife, Tharon Steinmetz, of Forest City; a son and his wife, Terry and Joanne Steinmetz of Northwood; a daughter and her husband, Paulette and Leslie Torkelson of Forest City; six grandchildren, Dale Steinmetz and his wife, Joan, Beth Heller and her husband, Mark, Laurel and Sara Steinmetz, Valerie Malchow and her husband, Steve, and Wade Torkelson and his wife, Dana; three great-grandchildren, Joshua and Emily Malchow and Ethan Torkelson; and several cousins and a host of friends.

Merle was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

HELEN MARIE GULBRANSON

OROVILLE, Calif. - Helen Marie Gulbranson, 93, died Dec. 21, 2000 at the home of her sister, Ruth M. Miller, in Oroville, Calif.

A funeral service was held at Sheer Memorial Chapel, Oroville, Calif., and burial was in Oroville Memorial Park Cemetery. Pastor Ingmar Jabosen of Paradise, Calif., officiated.

Helen Gulbranson was born in Mason City on Nov. 9, 1907, the daughter of Hans and Ellen (Degro) Gulbranson. She was a bookkeeper for Glanville Bros and Thompson-O'Neil grocery stores and Lock Studios in Mason City.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City and Calvary Lutheran Church in Oroville.

Survivors include her sister, Ruth Miller, and several nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Casper and Walter Gulbranson; a sister, Blanche Lyng; two nieces, La Von and Peggy Gulbranson; and a nephew, Paul Gulbranson.

KLEMME - Mitchell J. Bock, 85, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme with the Rev. Donna Buckman officiating. Interment will be at Ell Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church Thursday.

MASON CITY - Helen A. Hills, 84, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

LAKE MILLS - Stella Hagen, 89, died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with the Rev. Sara Beth Akre and the Rev. Roger Dykstra officiating. Burial will be in Salem Memorial Cemetery.

JOYCE L. FRASER

ALGONA - Joyce L. Fraser, 86, died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at Kossuth Regional Health Center, Algona.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Algona, with the Rev. Melvin Low officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.

JOICE - Maglene Brunsvold, 87, formerly of Joice, residing in Mesa, Ariz., died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) at Christopher House in Austin, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Joice, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Concordia Cemetery in Joice.

EVELYN ARNESON HELGESEN

JUPITER, Fla. - Evelyn Arneson Helgesen, 87, passed away on Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) after an extended illness at a local hospital in Jupiter, Fla.

Private services will be held for the family in Jupiter, Fla.

Evelyn was born and raised in Joice, daughter of the late Mabel Abrams Arneson and Ernest Grover Arneson. She graduated from Lake Mills High School, Lake Mills. She then attended Waldorf College, Forest City, and graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a bachelor of science degree in education.

Evelyn moved to Florida in 1965 and taught for 13 years at Jupiter Elementary School. She was a lifelong member of P.E.O.

She attended First Presbyterian Church, Tequesta, Fla., for many years.

Mrs. Helgesen is survived by two children, John E. Helgesen, of Lexington, Ky., and Mary Helgesen Brekke, with whom she resided; four grandchildren, Jennifer Renae Brekke, Ann Elizabeth Helgesen, Alicia Marie Helgesen, and Sarah Nicole Brekke; and one great-granddaughter, Destiny Marie Helgesen.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Harold I. Helgesen, whose parents were the late Dr. P.A. and Maude Helgesen, and a brother, Richard E. Arneson, who died in 2000.

JAMES 'PETE' OREDSEN

HAMPTON - James "Pete" Oredsen, 88, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at Hampton Health Care Center where he had been a resident for 22 days.

Memorial services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton at a later date due to inclement weather and relatives and friends who must come from the West Coast.

Pete was born Nov. 10, 1912, in Jackson, Minn., the son of Jens and Petra (Iverson) Oredsen. His father passed away when he was six years old and his mother two years later. He and his sister Hazel were adopted by their uncle and aunt, Marius and Ida Oredsen, joining their four sons, Melvin, Stan, Frances and Donald, who all preceded him in death, and their two daughters, Dorthea and Edna Mae.

Pete was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and after graduating from high school in Fertile, he returned to his birthplace in Jackson, Minn.

In 1942 he was drafted into the Army and assigned to the 299th Ordinance, Third Army, serving under Gen. George S. Patton's command in northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland in central Europe, and seeing Buchenwald Concentration Camp. He served three years and six months in the Army, returning to the United States in November 1945.

On Jan. 31, 1946, he was united in marriage with Mildred Ahlberg at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. They had one daughter, Nancy Ann, who expired in January 1993 after a six-year battle with cancer.

They farmed north of Hampton for 30 years, moving into Hampton in 1979 when he became ill. They spent 20 winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Pete is survived by his wife, Mil, of Hampton; a sister, Hazel Wonsmos, Thornton; three sisters-in-law, Mavis Ahlberg, Palm Springs, Calif., Dorthea Hansen, Los Angeles, Calif., and Edna Mae Seager, Sacramento, Calif.; and nieces and nephews in Arizona, California and Iowa who with friends have been very supportive for the past 22 years of his illness.

MILDRED J. (MRS. FRANK) HANNA

MASON CITY - Mildred J. (Mrs. Frank) Hanna, 92, of 324 Second St. N.E., formerly of 501 S. Tennessee Place, died Jan. 25, 2001 at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein officiating.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are preferred.

Mildred J. Hanna was born Sept. 19, 1908, the daughter of Arthur E. and Mary Belle (Tripp) Ross in Ames. She was a graduate of Iowa State College.

She was married on Nov. 27, 1930, in Grand Island, Neb., to A. Frank Hanna. They moved to Mason City in 1940 and were restaurant operators for many years.

Mildred was a member of The First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her son, Donald Hanna and his wife, Ida, of Plymouth, Minn.; grandchildren, Douglas Hanna, Plymouth, Minn., and Nancy Nafziger and her husband, Michael, Eagan, Minn.; and great-grandchildren, Grant and Morgan Nafziger, Eagan, Minn.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Frank, on March 8, 2000.

FLORENCE E. HANSON

GOODELL - Florence E. Hanson, 73, passed away Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) at her daughter's home in Belmond.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Goodell with the Rev. Curtis DeVance and the Rev. Patrick Kennedy officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Florence Evaline (Bates) Hanson was born July 20, 1927, in Ackley, Minn., to Samuel Arthur and Nettie Evaline McCarty Bates. They moved to Ruthven, Iowa, in 1928 where Florence went to school and graduated in 1945.

After graduation, Florence went to work in Dows where she met Merlin Orville Hanson. They were married on March 11, 1950, in Spencer at the Lutheran Church. They made their home in Dows where Duane was born in 1954. They moved to a farm on Highway 69 near Goodell where Janet was born in 1960. In 1962, they moved to the Cashman farm east of Goodell. They farmed several acres with the help of many hired men.

In addition to farming, they were involved in the community of Goodell. This included helping on many annual festivities, such as fireworks displays, Halloween parties and fishing contests. They started Goodell Watermelon Days.

In 1973 they moved to their own farm just down the road. Florence was a typical farm wife. She prepared big meals, drove a tractor and went fishing with her husband whenever they could find the time.

After the death of her husband in 1982, Florence lived on the farm until December of 1999 when she made her home with her daughter, Janet, in Belmond.

She was a member of several organizations which included the National Farmers Organization, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW and the Klemme and Goodell Senior Citizens. Florence helped with the Goodell Fire Department for over 20 years and was also a Girl Scouts leader. She held offices in many of these organizations.

Florence received the Outstanding Senior Citizen Award from Gov. Terry Branstad in 1992.

Florence is survived by her son, Duane and his wife, Jean, of Goodell; her daughter, Janet and her husband, Randy Lich, of Belmond; seven grandchildren, Benjamin, Barrin, Bethany and Barrick Hanson and Chastity (Lich) and her husband, Roger Simpson, and Christina and Austin Lich; two great-grandchildren, Preston Jay Hanson and Roger Dale Simpson Jr.; two sisters, Jessie Fieseler of Ruthven and Jean and her husband, Alan Maresch, of Bird Island, Minn.; and many extended family members and others who knew her as "Grandma Florence."

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a baby, four sisters and one brother.

BRICELYN, Minn. - Cindy Brown, 47, of Bricelyn, Minn., died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001) at her home in rural Bricelyn.

LAKE MILLS - Stella C. Hagen, 89, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Stella Clarice Hagen was born Jan. 17, 1912, in Bristol Township, Worth County, daughter of George and Tillie (Butler) Peterson. She attended Bristol Township country school.

On Oct.11,1934 she was united in marriage to Carl Hagen at the Bristol Luthern Church.

Stella had worked at Abraham's Store in Joice, Cool Spring Canning Factory and later the Holiday Grille in Lake Mills.

She loved spending time with her family, particularly her grandchildren.

Stella entered the Lake Mills Care Center in 1996 and passed away early Monday morning (Feb. 5, 2001) at the age of 89 years, 19 days.

Stella is survived by her loving husband, Carl Hagen, of Lake Mills; her daughter, Evonne Witham and her special friend, Jim Kofoot, of Mason City; three grandchildren, Kim Watham, of Clear Lake, Kelly Swanson, of Mason City, and Tom and his wife, Deirdre Witham, of Mason City; four great-grandchildren, Sara Swanson, Zachery Witham, Alex Witham and Molly Witham; one brother, Elton Peterson, of Northwood; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Emil, James, Roy, Gilmer and Harry; and one sister, Elvina.

FREDERICK W. SUNTKEN

BELMOND - Frederick W. Suntken, 85, of Belmond, passed away Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond.

The funeral for Frederick W. Suntken will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Reformed Church east of Belmond, with the Pastor Rob Ford officiating. Burial will take place in the Immanuel Reformed Church Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Hanson-Have American Legion Post No. 658 of Latimer.

Visitation for Frederick W. Suntken will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond.

Fred, the son of John and Yettie Gruis Suntken, was born March 15, 1915, on the family farm in Iowa Township. He grew up in the Meservey, Alexander and Belmond area. Fred attended school in Meservey, graduating from Meservey High School in 1932.

Following graduation, Fred farmed with his father until he entered the United States Army on March 11, 1941. He served as a radio operator in southern France during WW II. He returned home in 1945 after serving his country for 4 years, 7 months, and 10 days.

Fred was united in marriage with Lorene Waltzing on Dec. 29, 1949, at Lorene's parents' home in Belmond. The couple made their home on the family farm until moving to Belmond in 1984. Farming was Fred's life; he raised grain and livestock, which included purebred Shorthorn cattle. Fred truly had a family farming operation and instilled a good work ethic in his children. He never really retired from farming - it was in his heart. Farming never left "Farmer Fred."

A favorite hobby of Fred's was going to the elevator. He also enjoyed playing cards and teaching his children new games.

Fred was a member of Immanuel Reformed Church near Belmond, where he has served as deacon, elder and catechism teacher. He was a member of the Hanson-Have American Legion Post No. 658 in Latimer.

Fred is survived by his wife, Lorene; four daughters, Joy Bonin and her husband, David, of Belmond, Charlene Plagman and her husband, Rod, of Storm Lake, Shirley Birkenholz and her husband, David, of Newton, and Sandy Guhl and her husband, Roger, of Gahanna, Ohio; one son, Jonathan and his wife, Tami, of Belmond; 11 grandchildren, Michelle Bonin, David and his wife Brook Bonin, Jeremy and Jason Plagman, Sara and Brian Birkenholz, Lindsey and Jordan Guhl, Katelyn, Kellen, and Kendrick Suntken; one great-grandchild, Colton Bonin; one sister, Viola Christie and her husband, Leroy, of Wilmar, Minn.; two brothers, Jesse Suntken, of Meservey, and Herman and his wife, Berniece, of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ben.

Mitchell John Bock, the son of John and Naska (Wille) Bock, was born Feb. 3, 1916, on a farm east of Klemme. He attended country school at Ell No. 8 and graduated from Klemme High School. Following graduation, he took over his parents' farm.

On Feb. 3, 1942, he married Ida Mae Bessman at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Alden. They lived on the home farm, where they raised their children and farmed. They also raised dairy cattle and were the first in the state to have a Surge milking parlor.

In 1955, he began selling Clay Equipment and Mastermix Feed. Mitchell enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to tour South America in 1965 in a government-sponsored program called People to People. Mitchell and Ida Mae retired from farming in 1981 and moved into Klemme. He enjoyed his family and helping others, particularly the youth.

He was a life-long member of Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ, where he served as Sunday school superintendent, taught Sunday school and was a deacon. He was chairman of the board for the Klemme Apartments, Clerk of the Klemme Rural Fire Department, served on the board of KADO and belonged to the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He was also on the Creamery board and served as a trustee of the Hancock County Memorial Hospital from 1982 to 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Ida Mae, of Klemme; four children, Jim Bock and his wife, Barbara, of Fairmont, Minn., Joyce Lee and her husband, Dennis, of Dayton, Ohio, Jo Duncan and her husband, Royle, of Alden and Jean McBreen and her husband, Steven, of Ames; eight grandchildren, Laura Bock-Carlson, Susan Bock, Michelle Daniel, Anne Jones, Bethany and Jay Duncan and Justin and Blakely Rule; and a sister-in-law, Lenabelle Bock of Rockford, Ill.

KIESTER, Minn. - Eldon Sunde, 77, of Kiester, Minn., died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Thompson, with the Rev. Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiating. The body will be cremated after the service.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and again one hour before services on Saturday at the Church.

Eldon Sunde was born Jan. 10, 1924, near Buffalo Center, the son of Jonas and Isalene (McCrady) Sunde. He grew up in the Buffalo Center area and graduated from high school there.

He served in the military from 1946 to 1947 and was stationed in Japan.

On Sept. 13, 1952, he was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Burke at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson. In 1955 they purchased a farm near Kiester, Minn., where they spent their married life together. One son, Larry, was born to this union.

Eldon was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Kiester. He served on the F.H.A. board and worked for the Federal Crop Corp for 16 years. He was a supervisor for O'sGold Seeds for many years and committeeman for Winnebago County A.S.C.S. He also served as clerk for Logan Township until he retired.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jonas, in 1968; his mother, Isalene, in 1988; two brothers, Duane in infancy and Donald; one sister-in-law, Jeanne; and one nephew, Tim.

Eldon is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, of Kiester, Minn.; one son, Larry Sunde, of Lake Mills; one brother, Dean and his wife, Joan, of Buffalo Center; two nephews and three nieces.

He was a loving husband and father and enjoyed his life as a farmer and visiting with friends.

Mary Phyllis Cruise, the daughter of John F. and Eva Aldrich Cruise, was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Wesley. She attended St. Joseph's Academy in Wesley and graduated from Wesley High School. She then attended Purdue University in Ft. Wayne, Ind.

Phyllis was employed as a clerk in Kunz Department Store in Wesley and a ladies dress shop in Des Moines. Phyllis also was employed with Farnsworth Laboratory in Ft. Wayne during WW II.

Phyllis was united in marriage with William Mullin in Fort Wayne in 1945. The couple made their home in Hutchins. William passed away in 1954. For many years Phyllis was employed at Grifhorst Drug.

Phyllis enjoyed playing cards, traveling and spoiling her nieces and nephews. She entered Westview Care Center on Jan. 25, 1996.

Phyllis was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Store Club.

Phyllis is survived by two sisters, Jean May and her husband, William, of Columbia City, Ind., and Evangeline Kelly and her husband, Robert, of Britt; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

FOREST CITY - Dale Nielsen, 82, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2001) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Dale Marvin Nielsen was born on Oct. 24, 1918, in Thornton, to Chris and Pearl (Buck) Nielsen. He attended school in Thornton and served in World War II in the South Pacific.

On May 17, 1947, he married Lois Wonsmos in Mason City. To this union four children were born.

Following military service, he owned a trucking business in Thornton. In 1951 he and his family moved to Forest City, where he was employed as a mechanic by Hanson Farm Equipment and later at M & N Motors. Many remember Dale for his bailer and tractor repair. He later was employed at Winnebago Industries until he retired in 1980. During his retirement, he kept busy at yard work and being a handyman.

Dale was a member of the American Legion, the Rotary, a board member of the Robetelle Center, a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, a Stephen Minister, and a member of the "Kum Along Club."

Dale enjoyed all sports, especially fishing and hunting. He loved being the first baseman with the Nielsen family softball team, "The Blue Devils." He was still playing first base well into his 70s at family reunions. He delighted in watching his children and grandchildren play sports and perform in programs.

Dale Nielsen passed away on Feb. 7, 2001, at Good Samaritan Center in Forest City at the age of 82 years, 3 months, 12 days.

MARK MCGREEVY

MASON CITY - Mark J. McGreevy, 84, of 720 N. Federal Ave., Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 8, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

An inurnment service will take place at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. According to his wishes, Mr. McGreevy's body has been cremated.

Mark was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Waterloo, the son of Joseph P. and Irene (Kulp) McGreevy. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterloo in 1935.

Mark worked as a foundry supervisor at John Deere Inc. in Waterloo until his retirement on Jan. 31, 1978.

He was united in marriage to Bernice Mae Montgomery on April 17, 1978, in Marengo.

Mark enjoyed golfing and watching sports on TV.

He was a member of the Mason City Elks Lodge No. 375, the Mason City Moose Lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3416 of Mason City.

Clare Elsie Ptacek, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Chihak) Ptacek, was born June 2, 1911, on a farm west of Garner. She attended the rural schools of Liberty Township. She helped on the farm and also took care of her parents.

In 1956, she moved into Duncan where she took care of her brother, Frank, and her sister, Albina Urich. Clare enjoyed cleaning the church and preparing meals for the priest. She especially enjoyed her family and needlework.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and the Rosary Society.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Adolph, Anton, Frank and Louis Ptacek; and three sisters, Emily Brcka, Mary Urich and Albina Urich.

Doris worked at Marshall and Swift in Mason City until she was united in marriage to Bernard A. Fitzgerald on Oct. 23, 1948, in Mason City. After many years as a homemaker, Doris became a dental assistant for Dr. James Percival in Mason City.

She enjoyed gambling and traveling, especially to Phoenix in the winter and to Clear Lake for the summer. Doris also took great joy in spending time with her family, especially her grandkids.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City.

Merland Cletus Lines was born Nov. 9, 1918, in Ulster Township, Floyd County, a son of Elmer Claude and Mata Lena (Ewald) Lines. He died Thursday (Feb. 8, 2001) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

He received his education in the Marble Rock public schools where he participated in the high school band and debate team. He graduated in 1936. Throughout the years he was a proud supporter of the school and was a member of the Marble Rock Alumni Association.

Merland started farming as a young man on the family farm where he continued until his retirement. On April 10, 1949, he was united in marriage to LaVonne Arline Daughenbaugh at the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock. To this union five children were born. He was proud of his family and his family's ancestry. He was considered the family historian and genealogist. Merland was always interested in community affairs and politics.

He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church in Marble Rock where he was a member of the Methodist men's group. His pastimes included reading, playing solitaire, watching television game shows and visiting with friends.

Merland will be sadly missed by his loving wife, LaVonne, of Marble Rock; two daughters, Joyce Hanna of Lake Mills and Debra Lines of Leland; one son, Bruce Lines, of Minneapolis; and two grandchildren, Craig David Hanna and Kayla Marie Hanna.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Craig in 1970 and Juhl in 1994; his parents; and a sister, Ilene Ackley.

BELMOND - Raymond E. Wicks, 71, of Belmond, died Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001) in Mesa, Ariz.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

STANLEY MARK PULLEN

SPENCER - Funeral services for Stanley Mark Pullen, 85, of Long Beach, Calif., will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Warner Chapel in Spencer with Pastor Chuck Schoeninger officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, with military services performed by the American Legion, Glen Pedersen Post No. 1.

Stanley Mark Pullen, the son of Roy T. and Ella Moon Pullen, was born Dec. 29, 1915, in Spencer. He received his education in Spencer, graduating from Spencer High School in 1933.

On June 7, 1939, Stanley entered the military and served in the U.S. Navy until the time of his honorable discharge on Sept. 11, 1945.

Stanley married Rita May Yeazell in Torrance, Calif., on Nov. 28, 1943. Following their marriage, they lived in California until 1948.

They returned to Spencer to farm the family farm until retiring in 1974, at which time he moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he lived until his death. He engaged in an around-the-world trip from September of 1976 until February of 1977.

Mr. Pullen died at his home in Long Beach on Feb. 2, 2001, at the age of 85.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita, in 1974; three brothers, Harvey Pullen, Gilbert "Gib" Pullen and C. Lester "Si" Pullen; and his stepmother, Zoe Spitler Pullen.

Stanley is survived by two daughters and their husbands, DJ and Butch Medsker, of Mason City, and Sharon and Milo Allen, of Spencer; five sons and their wives, John M. and Anne Pullen of Aiken, S.C., Capt. James T. and Nancy Pullen, of Midlothian, Va., Terry W. Pullen of Mason City, Gregory R. Pullen of Apache Junction, Ariz., and William "Bill" and Tami Pullen, of Spencer; 18 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Florence Rusch, of Spencer; one brother, Ray Pullen, of Tucson, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Lillian Pullen, of Spencer; one stepbrother, Jack Spitler and his wife, Holly, of Rock Rapids; and other relatives and friends.
