JEREMY 'GOMER' AHLHELM

OSAGE - Jeremy "Gomer" Ahlhelm, 19, died Saturday (Aug. 25, 2001) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., from injuries received in an automobile accident on Aug. 19.

Jeremy was born July 13, 1982, in Waterloo, the son of Scott and Becky (Huffman) Ahlhelm. He moved with his family to Osage in 1985. Jeremy attended Osage schools and graduated from Osage High School in 2000.

While in school he participated in football and baseball. One of Jeremy's proudest moments was when he pitched and won a game at the Iowa State High School Baseball Tournament in 2000.

He was employed at Tops Business Forms in Osage.

Jeremy played amateur baseball and slow pitch softball. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 833 Ash St., Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and will continue from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home and then one hour before the services at the church.

Jeremy is survived by his parents, Scott and Becky Ahlhelm of Osage; one sister, Mindy Starbuck and her husband, Ray, of Cedar Falls, and a nephew, Zachary Starbuck; maternal grandfather, Ralph Huffman of Evansdale; paternal grandmother, Barbara Ahlhelm of Waterloo; and numerous aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Wilma Huffman, and paternal grandfather, Donald Ahlhelm.

BILLY LEE BERGMAN SR.

CLEAR LAKE - Bill Lee Bergman Sr., 66, of 717 North 13th Street, died Friday (August 24, 2001) at his home in Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake, with the Reverend David Gobeli officiating. Interment will follow at Clear Lake Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the Clear Lake VFW Post.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home and will resume for one hour prior to the service Tuesday.

Bill was born November 26, 1934, in Britt, Iowa, one of six children born to Bennie and Helen (Broome) Bergman. He served in the United States Army from December 1951 until December 1954 during the Korean Conflict.

Bill was united in marriage to Barbara (Bobbie) Ostendorf on August 5, 1954, while stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky. After his discharge from the service, they lived in Clear Lake. After that, they lived in Southern California for ten years and in Canon City, Colo., for four years. They returned to Clear Lake where Bill worked at Curries Manufacturing until his retirement in 1997.

Bill loved to write poetry and make people laugh. He also loved his God dearly.

Billy will be greatly missed by his wife, Barbara, of Clear Lake; four children, Eddie Bergman and his special friend, Ann Sanchez, Kevin Bergman and his wife, Debra, and Terry Bergman and his wife, Connie, all of Mason City, and Janie Bergman Bernhoft and her husband, Patrick, of Clear Lake; two daughters-in-law, Shelly McCauley of Hanlontown and Ronda Fredrickson of Tacoma, Wash., and ten grandchildren.

Billy was preceded in death by a son, Billy L. Bergman Jr., otherwise known as "Shorty"; his mother, Helen Austin; a brother, Randy; and a sister, Joann.

BUFFALO CENTER - Marie Murra, 72, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Reformed Church, Buffalo Center, with Pastor Bill Peake officiating. Cremation will follow the service with inurnment at Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center, at a later date.

WAVERLY - Dale L. Behne, 73, died Friday (Aug. 24, 2001) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Waverly, with the Rev. Tony Nester officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, 281 Second St. S.E., Waverly, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. SHIRLEY MARGARET (RICHSMANN) DOUGHERTY

GRAFTON, W. Va.- Shirley Margaret (Richsmann) Dougherty, 65, of West Wilford St., Grafton, W.Va., left this life for heaven on Wednesday (Aug. 22, 2001) at the United Hospital Center in Clarksburg, W.Va.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Donald G. Ford Funeral Home, Route No. 50 West, Grafton, W.Va., with Pastor Sarah M. Lee officiating. Interment will be in West Virginia National Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW Memorial City Post No. 3081 of Grafton, the American Legion Taylor County Post No. 12 and the D.A.V. Chapter No. 24 of Grafton and Auxiliary.

The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Donald G. Ford Funeral Home in Grafton, and from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26.

Shirley was born on Aug. 31, 1935, in Osage, Iowa, and was the daughter of the late Robert Charles and Leona M. M. (Ruehlow) Richsmann.

She is survived by two daughters, Eileen Greynolds and her husband, Joey, of Grafton, W.Va., and Carolyn Riddle of Clarksburg, W.Va.; three sons, Tom Dougherty and his wife, Peggy, of Grafton, W.Va., Rich Dougherty of Naples, Fla., and Bob Dougherty and his wife, Misty, of Sarver, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, U.S.M.C. Sgt. Michael Dougherty and his wife, Rachel, of Belpre, Ohio, Joseph and Barry Greynolds of Grafton, W.Va., Kristyn, David and Travis Riddle of Clarksburg, W.Va., Rebecca and Connor Dougherty of Grafton, W.Va., Erin Copeland of Brigham City, Utah, and Hailey and Briana Dougherty of Sarver, Pa.; one great-grandchild, Brittney Dougherty of Belpre, Ohio; four step-grandchildren, Laddie Kirkland of Clearwater, Fla., Emily Manrique of New York, N.Y., Stephanie Windle and Tyler Swistek of Maple Valley, Wash.; three sisters, Barb Frohling and her husband, Ver, of Story City, Iowa, Kathy Michael and her husband, Roger, of Charles City, Iowa, and Mona Hedegard and her husband, Rod, of Manly, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by one infant son, Patrick Charles Dougherty.

Shirley was retired from the U.S. Army with 20 years of service, retiring in 1992. She was previously employed as city clerk with the City of Grafton and also had been employed by The Sears Co. and Musgroves Mill and the Grafton Sentinel newspaper, both of Grafton, W.Va.

She was a member and past commander of the American Legion Taylor County Post No. 12, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W. Memorial City Post No. 3081 of Grafton, a former member of the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department, a board member and secretary of the Taylor County Little League and was a member of The Church of the Covenant-Lutheran of Grafton.

Rosie "Rose" J. Warner was born on April 13, 1932, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Harold J. and Thelma P. (Smiley) Ohrt. She attended Mason City Schools. Rosie enjoyed working with the elderly in various nursing homes in Mason City for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards and was member of the Merry 8th card club. Her other past times included watching sporting events and many John Wayne movies.

Those who loved her and will continue to cherish her memory include four brothers, Bob Warner and wife, Molly, of El Paso, Texas, Lloyd Warner and wife, Pat, of Ankeny, Iowa, Jack Warner and wife, Kris, of Champlain, Minn., and John Ohrt and wife, Wanda of Columbus, Ga. three sisters, Genevieve Cooper, of Richmond, Va., Carolyn Thada and husband, Denny, of Clear Lake, and Thelma Lindloff and husband, Edwin "Tex," of Mason City; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

ORVILLE J. HOVELAND

KANAWHA - Orville J. Hoveland, 77, of Kanawha, passed away Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at the Kanawha Community Home following a lengthy illness of respiratory problems and finally cancer.

Funeral services for Orville Hoveland will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will take place in Amsterdam Township Cemetery in Kanawha.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Home in Kanawha and one hour prior to services at the church.

Orville, the son of George and Sadie Ellingston Hoveland, was born Dec. 17, 1923, in rural Kanawha, the youngest of four boys.

Orville was united in marriage with Helen Jensen on Jan. 14, 1945, in Renwick. The couple lived most of their marriage in the Kanawha area where Orville was engaged in farming. Orville and Helen retired from farming in 1986, and built their home in Kanawha.

Besides farming, Orville enjoyed working with wood and prior to his illness did some carpentry in Kanawha. He loved his workshop and spent many hours making crafts and furniture for family and friends.

Orville loved his family and always did what he could to make them happy. The last few years were difficult, much of his time was spent confined to his home, but he still kept his sense of humor.

Orville was a member of the Kanawha United Methodist Church where at one time he served as a trustee. He also served on the board of the Kanawha Community Home.

We are sorry to part with him, but his quality of life was such that we are glad he is resting in peace at last.

Orville is survived by his wife Helen; three sons and one daughter, Robert and his wife, Linda, of Miller, Gary and his wife, Jean, of Kanawha, Dwight and his wife, Jacque, of Kanawha, and Jeannie Cornelius and her husband, Steve, of Topeka, Kan.; eight grandchildren, Angie Knowles and her husband, Doug, of Gilman, Rodney Hoveland and his wife, Jennifer, of Marshalltown, Nikkie Hoveland, of Baltimore, Md., Jim Hoveland and his wife, Michelle, of Kanawha, Jacob Hoveland, of Kanawha, Jennifer Cornelius, of Lawrence, Kan., Tracy Cornelius, of Topeka, Kan. and Brian Cornelius, of Topeka, Kan.; seven step-grandchildren, Justin Terwilliger, of Hastings, Minn., Tiffany, Ashley, and Kirsten Kitley, of Kanawha, Jessica Amant, of Dwight, Ill., Alicia and Dakota Daniels, of Kanawha; seven great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Jacob and Jordan Knowles, of Gilman, Ethan, Mason and Katilyn Hoveland, of Marshalltown, and Mya Hoveland, of Kanawha; and two step-great grandchildren, Nate and Justin Knowles, of Iowa City.

THOMAS GROSS

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Thomas Gross, 67, of 621 N. Summit Ave. died Thursday (Aug. 23, 2001) at his residence due to complications of cancer.

A Mass of The Resurrection was held on Monday, Aug. 27, at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls, S.D. with the Rev. Thomas Ryan and the Rev. DeWayne Kayser officiating. Burial was in St. Michael Cemetery in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Tom was born Aug. 8, 1934, in Mason City, Iowa to William and Viola (Remmers) Gross. The family moved to Sioux Falls in 1952 and Tom graduated from Cathedral High School in 1953. From 1956 to 1962, Tom was manager of Schiff Shoes in Mitchell, S.D.

On Oct. 25, 1958, Tom married Mary Phelan in Sioux Falls, S.D. Tom was then employed at John Morrell and Company for 30 years, serving as a union business agent between 1984-1986 and then during the years 1997-1999, he worked as an office manager for Electrolux. His children saw him as a father, teacher and friend.

Tom was a member of St. Joseph Cathedral. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a Bantam Baseball coach.

Tom is survived by his wife, Mary, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; four sons, Kevin, of Alexandria, Minn., Patrick, of Soux Falls, S.D., Jeff, of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Shawn, of Durham, N.C.; one daughter, Kim Hines and her husband, Tom, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one sister, Patricia Billings, and her husband, Tom, of Vine Grove, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law, Margaret and Raymond Phelan; one sister, Sister Barbara Marie; and one brother-in-law, Denis Phelan.

NICK RAMIREZ

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Nick Ramirez, born Aug. 28, 1935 in Kansas City, Kan., entered into rest on Aug. 24, 2001, at the age of 65.

Mr. Ramirez attended Grant and Roosevelt schools in Mason City and later finished his education in San Antonio, Texas. He later retired after his 41 year employment with Pepsi-Cola.

ANITA L. SUCHY

OSAGE - Anita L. Suchy, 91, of Osage, died Sunday (Aug. 26, 2001) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Anita was born March 10, 1910, in Tipton, to John and Marie (Behrend) Dettmann. She moved with her family to Mitchell County. She graduated from Osage High School in 1928. Following graduation, she taught rural school and because of her father's death, she helped to operate the family farm.

She was united in marriage to Eugene R. Suchy on Aug. 25, 1938, in Osage. They made their home on the Suchy farm north of Osage, where she lived until moving into Osage in 1980. She entered the Faith Home in August of 2000.

Anita was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, led Bible studies, served as church librarian and actively participated in WELCA activities, especially stewardship projects.

She was a member of the Mitchell County Historical Society and served as hostess at the museum for many years. She also belonged to the Shakespearian Club.

Anita enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and needle work.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery in Osage.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

She is survived by one son, Allan J. Suchy and his wife, Betty, of Osage; daughter, Ann M. Gerriets and her husband, Dale, of Waubay, S.D.; two grandsons, Michael Gerriets, of Clark, S.D., and Robert Gerriets, of Watertown, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Eugene, in 1972; a brother, John Dettman; and infant sister, Erna; and a sister, Erena Jensen.

PLEASANT HOPE, Mo. - Charles Albert "Joe" Nichols Jr., 52, of Pleasant Hope, Mo. passed away on Aug. 8, 2001.

Joe lived and grew up in Mason City and Clear Lake. He was an avid fisherman and boatman.

Joe was a substance abuse therapist in St. Joseph Hospital in Springfield, Mo., and was instrumental in the Bridgeway Program at the hospital.

He is survived by his fiancee, Mary Ann Cooper, of Pleasant Hope, Mo.; one daughter, Kristy Barstead and her husband, Jeff, of Springfield, Mo.; three sons, Charles Jr. of Williamsburg, Tracy Nichols and his wife, Julie, of Springfield, Mo., and Willis Nichols III, of Springfield, Mo.; a brother, Jerry Nichols, of St. Ansgar; a sister, Sheri Nichols, of Mason City; aunts and uncles, Gordie (Ruth) Nichols, John (Karen) Nichols, Carolyn Nichols, of Clear Lake, and Lyle Klein of Mason City.

JOHN L. KING

KLEMME - A prayer service for John L. King, 97, of Klemme, will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Klemme, with Pastor Paddy Druhl of the United Methodist Church of Klemme officiating.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Murdo, S.D., with the Rev. Morris Olson officiating. Interment will be held in the Murdo Cemetery.

John L. King was born May 14, 1904, in Villisca, the son of John Leonard King Sr. and Edna (Ellis) King Brink. He moved to South Dakota in his teen years, where he engaged in ranching.

He married Emma Leithoff in 1924. In 1936 he moved to Murdo, S.D., where he was involved in plumbing and construction.

During World War II he was a welding foreman building ships in Seneca, Ill.

In 1945 he moved back to Murdo, where he managed the water department and did police work. After retirement from the city he worked at maintenance at a housing unit.

He was a charter member of the Murdo Senior Citizens, served on the trustee board for the Methodist Church and in 1987 he received the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Masonic Lodge.

His hobbies included hunting and fishing. He had been making his home with his daughter in Klemme since 1996.

John died on Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at the Concord Care Center in Garner at the age of 97.

He is survived by three children, Willis King, of Apache Junction, Ariz., Don King and his wife, Karen, of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Helen Winter, of Klemme; grandchildren, Pamela Barkema, Stephen, Dennis and Roger Winter and Greg, Jeff and Richard King; one stepgranddaughter, Dreana McDowell; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leona Vaughan, of Rapid City, S.D.

HELEN G. CONLEY

NORTHWOOD - Helen G. Conley, 78, of Northwood, formerly of Des Moines, died Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the First Church of the Open Bible, 2200 Beaver Ave. in Des Moines, with the Rev. Harry Russell officiating. Interment will be in the Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

Helen (McCoy) Conley was born on May 7, 1923, in Chariton, to Gene and Hazel (Vawter) McCoy. She attended school in Chariton and Des Moines, where she graduated from Lincoln High School.

Helen was a WAVE, and after World War II attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. She was married to Dewey Conley and had one son, Stephen.

At the age of 28, Helen was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Because of her illness, she retired in 1966, after years of working for the federal government.

Following the death of her husband, Helen's health problems became more severe. She sold her home in Des Moines, and moved to the Willows in Mason City. She lived here nearly eight years. She became a resident of the Lutheran Retirement Home in December 1998.

Though she had severe health problems, Helen had a positive mental attitude. She watched many hours of TV, played word games, enjoyed her friends and all the family visits.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dewey Conley; son, Stephen Conley; and brothers, Ervin McCoy and Ralph McCoy.

She is survived by two granddaughters, Janis (Shawn) Ward, and Jodi (Mark) Lewis; great-grandson, Cody Conley; one daughter-in-law, Cordie Conley, all of Des Moines; two brothers, Merrill McCoy, of Strawberry Point, and John Moore, of Coos Bay, Ore.; three sisters, Maxine (Paul) Tantow, of Mason City, Colleen (Byford) Rogness, of Emmons, Minn., and Wilma (Chet) Amundson, of Fertile; and many nieces and nephews.

Orrel G. Kelly was born Nov. 17, 1920, in Pierre, S.D., the son of Gilbert J. and Janna S. (Rollie) Kelly. "Kelly" graduated from high school in Brookings, S.D. He then attended the University of South Dakota for two years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. "Kelly" married Betty M. Hentis on Aug. 31, 1974 in Minneapolis.

"Kelly" worked as an insurance adjuster for G.A.B. for about 28 years, and for the past 13 years he worked for Airborne Express.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, V.F.W. and the Moose Lodge.

"Kelly" is survived by his children, Jan Runyan and her husband, Bruce, of Champlin, Minn., Steven J. Kelly, of Bellflower, Calif., and John G. Kelly, of Garner; stepchildren, Gary D. Faktor and his wife, Jan, of Mason City, and Pam A. Crocker, of Lincoln, Neb.; grandchildren, Cari L. Dec, Michelle L. Schuler, Gregory H. Bessie L. Jones was born on April 19, 1913, in Mason City, the daughter of Frank and Marie (Hanc) Krivohlavy. She graduated from St. Joseph's High School.

On July 19, 1937, she was united in marriage to Aubert K. Jones during a ceremony in Mason City. In 1950 they moved to Waterloo, where she worked as a bookkeeper in the credit department of Sears Roebuck. She retired in 1973. In 1978 she returned to Mason City.

She was a member of the Boehemian Lodge (Velehardt), RSVP Rebekah No. 106, and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.

Those left to cherish her memory include several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four sisters and three brothers.

SOREN PERSHING OLSON

CLEAR LAKE - Soren Pershing Olson, 82, of Clear Lake, formerly of Horseshoe Bend, Ark., died Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center in Mason City.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery, with military graveside honors by the Clear Lake VFW.

There will be no visitation.

The family of Soren Pershing Olson has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, or to the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend.

Soren was born on Sept. 25, 1918, on a farm near Scarville, the son of Severt and Anna (Mykleby) Olson. He was baptized in the Lime Creek Lutheran Church on Nov. 17, 1918, and was confirmed in the Eldora Lutheran Church in March 1934. He graduated from the Bricelyn, Minn. high school in 1937.

Soren enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 4, 1942, and honorably served his country until his discharge on Nov. 19, 1945. He was a member of the 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during World War II, serving 29 months in Central Europe as a mail clerk.

He was united in marriage to Helen Lomen on Sept. 1, 1946, in the Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Soren was employed in the Clear Lake Buttertop Bakery before buying his own bakery in Hampton, and in 1967 he bought a bakery in Boone.

He retired in 1980, when Helen and Soren moved to Horseshoe Bend. They moved back to Clear Lake in late October 2000.

Soren became a resident of Heritage Care Center in Mason City at the end of March this year, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Soren loved golfing, fishing, gardening, playing bridge and riding horseback.

He was an active member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend. He also was a member of the Kiwanis Club for nearly 40 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Helen Olson, of Clear Lake; their two daughters, Audrey Knight and her husband, Jack, of Boone, and Susan Knippel and her husband, David, of Ames. He has two granddaughters, Christine Knight, of Ames and her two daughters, Kari and Cassie Olson; and Angie Oppedahl, wife of Jon Oppedahl, of Cedar Rapids, and their daughters, Anna and Laura. He also has two grandsons, Eric and Daniel Knippel, as well as four step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren.

Others surviving are Soren's two brothers, James A. Olson and his wife, Audrey, of Blue Earth, Minn., and Marvin O. Olson and his wife, Norma, of Des Moines; several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

Soren was preceded in death by his parents; and one infant great-grandson, Grant Oppedahl.

MILDRED L. ELLEFSON

THOMPSON - Mildred Ellefson, 91, of Hot Springs, Ark., formerly of Thompson, died on August 21, 2001, in Hot Springs, Ark.

Her memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at the United Methodist Church in Thompson, with the Rev. Wendy Trone officiating. Inurnment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Mildred Louise Strong Ellefson was born on Oct. 7, 1909, in Orient Township, Adair County, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Eda Strong. She was raised on a farm in southern Iowa with her brother, Floyd, and sister, Dorothy.

After graduating from Orient High School in 1927, Mildred enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She received her teaching certificate in 1929 and taught school in Orient and College Springs, Iowa.

In 1930 Mildred moved to North Iowa and taught first grade in Buffalo Center for two years. She married Marion Ellefson in 1932 and they made their home in Thompson, where they owned and operated a well drilling business.

In 1947 Mildred returned to her teaching career in Thompson and continued to teach for another 10 years. She then served as bookkeeper and office manager for the family business, Ellefson Well Supply.

She was a 70-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She served as an officer of the Winnebago Historical Society and was a member of the Thompson Methodist Church.

In her retirement, Mildred pursued her interest in genealogy and traced her family tree for multiple centuries. She was a charter member of the Strong Family Association of America. She participated in the planning and execution of the Thompson 1992 centennial celebration and co-edited the centennial book.

In 1996 she moved to West Shores Retirement Home in Hot Springs, Ark. There she made many friends and enjoyed her senior years. She died there on August 21, 2001, at the age of 91 years.

She is survived by her son, Keith and his wife, Genevieve Ellefson, of Chicago, Ill.; granddaughter, Elizabeth Smidt and husband, Roger; and a great-grandson, Samuel Smidt, all of McKinney, Texas; and granddaughter, Susan Ellefson of Chicago, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, a sister and her husband.

Charles R. Younke was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Mason City, the son of Charlie and Mary (Breed) Younke. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School.

Chuck entered the U.S. Navy in September 1943, serving aboard the USS Unimak. He was discharged in November 1945.

He married Delores Clausen at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in 1949. Chuck began his apprenticeship with Henkel Construction Co. in 1951. He moved to Arizona and five years later returned to Mason City where he began working for Davey & Moen Construction Co. He retired in 1988.

He was a member of the V.F.W., Brick Local #3 in Des Moines and received his 50-year gold card as a brick mason. He enjoyed fishing, camping and working with his hands.

He is survived by his wife, Delores, of Mason City; daughter, Sue Graf and her husband, Charlie, of Mason City; son, Charles D. Younke and his wife, Jo, of Mason City; daughter, Debbie Boster and her husband, Dennis, of Sheldon; grandchildren, Dawn Rozelle, Jennifer Davis and husband, Brian, Missy Thofson and husband, Tim, Justin Younke and special friend, Amanda, Heather Schissel and husband, Jamie, David Boster, and Angie Boster; great-grandchildren, Bria, Zane, Jalin, Jacie, Tyler, Ethan, Cody and Caleb; two sisters, Mary Ann Major of Illinois and Alida Weber, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

Dale M. Reckner was born Jan. 19, 1929, in rural Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Harry E. and Alvina (Rieken) Reckner. He attended rural Mitchell County schools.

Following school he went to work for Jacob B. Decker and Sons. He was united in marriage to Helen June Abben on April 27, 1949, at the Little Brown Church.

They lived in Mason City for two years before making their home in Rock Falls. He retired from Armour in 1990 after many years of service. Besides the work he did for Armour, he enjoyed the jobs he found steam fitting and plumbing.

He enjoyed wintering in Texas, fishing the great lakes of Canada for walleye and northern pike, hunting and trap shooting, but most of all he loved aeronautics. He was a member of EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). He earned his pilot license at the age of 16. No matter where he was he was always looking to the sky to identify the airplane passing by.

Dale's family meant the world to him and he looked forward to "family get-togethers." His spirit was one of a kind that will not soon be forgotten.

Those thankful for experiencing his love include sons, Dean Reckner and wife, Bette, of West Des Moines, and David Reckner and wife, Mardell, of Plymouth; daughters, Connie Bram and husband, Dana, of Lawrence, Kan., and Karen Hamilton and husband, Tim, of Alburnett; spare daughter, Lora Broadhurst and husband, Alan, of Pocatello, Idaho; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sisters, Shirley Fisera and husband, Henry, of Osage; Mavis Wieland and husband, Howard, of Osage.

MASON CITY - Earl R. Losee, 76, of 929 16th St. N.E., died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. in Hillside Cemetery at Marble Rock, with military rites conducted by the Gallagher American Legion Post No. 208 of Rockwell.

There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.

Earl Losee was born Nov. 1, 1924, near Marble Rock, the son of Vern and Jane (Walster) Losee. He received his education in country schools and graduated from Marble Rock High School in 1942.

He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943, receiving his training in Texas, South Dakota, Arizona and Nevada. Earl flew numerous combat missions as a radio-gunner in a B24 Liberator Bomber against the Japanese fortifications in New Guinea, Borneo, Formosa (Taiwan) China, Vietnam and the Philippines. He was awarded two bronze stars on his Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and the Air Medal for Meritorious Achievement while in flight. He also received the Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Marble Rock.

He married Evelyn Bartels May 24, 1947, in Charles City. Earl operated meat processing plants in Sheffield, Algona and Rockwell for many years, retiring in 1993.

He was past commander of the Sheffield Legion, vice president and charter member of the Sheffield Lions Club and director of the Sheffield Community Club. He was also past school board member, Rockwell Swaledale, commander Rockwell American Legion and past president of Rockwell Chamber of Commerce. He moved to Mason City in 1991.

Earl is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Uhlenhake, of Urbandale, Diane Fortsch of Denton, Texas, Tamara Petermeier and her husband, Mark, of Weatherford, Texas; two sons, Earl Dean Losee and his wife, Cindy, of Nixa, Mo., and Michael Losee of Mason City; 12 grandchildren, Trent, Travis, Tracy, Corey, Peter, Molly, Toby, Sarah, Brian, Austin, Tyler and Joshua; seven great-grandchildren, Shayna, Spencer, Chelsea, Jenna, Hanna, Brendon and Anthony; and a sister-in-law, Ardis Lockwood, of Charles City.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn, in 1999; brothers, Claude and Donavon; daughter, Marilyn; son, Roger; and granddaughter, Katie.

DENNIS L. TOLZMAN

FORT SMITH, Ark. - Dennis L. Tolzman, 54, died Aug. 15, 2001, at his home, 3016 Beverly Dr., Fort Smith, Ark. after a courageously fought battle with cancer.

Dennis attended schools in Mason City and Rockwell-Swaledale and graduated from Nora Springs-Rock Falls in 1966. He was united in marriage to Linda Timm of Nora Springs in 1967.

He worked for Armour, Wilbert Vault and Andrews Concrete before moving to Quincy, Ill., where he graduated from Gem City College in 1979. He moved with his family to Fort Smith where he was founder and owner/manager of Tolzman Jewelers.

Dennis was one of Jehovah's Witnesses for 27 years and served faithfully as a ministerial servant in the Fort Smith Congregation until his death.

He enjoyed traveling with his wife and children, fishing with his father and grandchildren and attending auctions. He especially enjoyed sharing and instructing his children and grandchildren in his art of jewelry design and creation and all aspects of the jewelry business.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 34 years, Linda; a son, Brett, of Florida; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Gene Titsworth, of Van Buren, Ark., and Allison and Danny Hollis, of Fort Smith, Ark; five grandchildren, Lindsey, Spencer, Brooke, Jayla and Davin; his parents, Laverne and Lillian Tolzman, of Havana, Ark.; mother- and father-in-law, Shirley and Melvin Manning, of Rogers, Ark.; one brother and sister-in-law, Al and Brenda Tolzman, of Mullen, Idaho; and sisters and brother-in-laws, Diane and Robert Neuhring, of Mason City, and Susan and Tom Berry, of Havana, Ark.; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews; and an innumerable host of loving and loyal friends.

Memorial services were held on Aug. 18, 2001, in Fort Smith, Ark.

Burial will be at Rock Grove Cemetery in Nora Springs at a later date.

CHARLES CITY - Jeffrey L. Obermeier, 20, formerly of Charles City, died Monday (Aug. 27, 2001) at John C. Lincoln Hospital North in Phoenix, Ariz.

JOHNNIE EUGENE HANES

MASON CITY - Johnnie Eugene Hanes, 71, of Mason City, died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2502 N. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Mason City Veterans Association.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and one hour prior to service time on Saturday at the church.

The family of Johnnie Eugene Hanes has requested that memorial contributions be made to Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.

Johnnie Eugene Hanes was born on April 28, 1930, in St. Louis, Mo., the son of Logan and Oma (Hollingsworth) Hanes. He attended and received his education in the St. James, Mo., schools.

He was united in marriage to Aura Maxine Piper on April 2, 1951, in Salem, Ark. She preceded him in death on Sept. 7, 1995.

Johnnie entered the U.S. Army on April 6, 1951, in St. Louis, Mo., serving in Btry A 91st AAA AWBN with the 5th Army until his honorable discharge on March 27, 1953, at Camp Breckinridge, Ky.

Following his honorable discharge, Johnnie drove truck for more than 45 years for various companies in the North Iowa area, 25 of those years working for Mason City Warehouse (Carroll Sales).

He enjoyed family barbecues and family gatherings, but his great love and enjoyment was his wife and son, Johnnie.

He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mason City, Mason City Veterans Memorial Association and the Teamsters Union.

Left to cherish his memory is his son, Johnnie R. Hanes of State Center, Iowa; a sister, Ella Frye and her husband, Franklin, of Bamberg, S. C.; two sisters-in-law, Pearl McWhorter and her husband, Morris Parks, of Mason City, and Vivian Piper, of Mason City; a brother-in-law, Jack Piper and his wife, Grace, of Mason City; various nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

In addition to his wife, Aura, Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters.

DOROTHY ZIPSE

CHARLES CITY - Dorothy Zipse, 100 years, 8 months, of the Star Home, formerly of 601 N. Johnson St., Charles City, died Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 28, 2001) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

Her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Dorothy was born on Dec. 28, 1900, one of 10 children to George and Minnie (Lipp) Hauser on a farm near Ionia. She attended school in that area. On Nov. 14, 1922, she was united in marriage to W.R. Zipse at the Rectory of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. To this union was born two children.

W.R. and Dorothy made their home in New Hampton, moving from there in 1935 to Cresco. While in Cresco, she worked at Warner's Department Store in sales.

In 1943 she and her husband joined business hands and opened and operated Zipse's Tavern in Charles City and later owned and operated the Frontier Club for 10 years.

In 1951 they changed business directions and purchased the Hart Court Motel until their retirement in 1960.

Dorothy was active in her membership at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with St. Anthony's Circle and the Rosary Society. Dorothy and her husband were active card players, playing 500, poker and bridge.

She also was a member of the Heritage Club and enjoyed traveling with them. When she was 85 she took her last big trip to Hawaii. She also traveled many times during the 1990s to Denver to be with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorothy had a continuous rummage sale going just for the pleasure of meeting the people. She was an excellent seamstress, had a green thumb with her house plants and was a great hostess for family and friends by having coffee and cookies (especially Ginger Creams) whenever someone stopped by.

She enjoyed reading and having fish and wild game feeds for her family with food her husband caught and hunted. Her sisters had a love for dealing in antiques while Dorothy bought them.

Those thankful in sharing Dorothy's full and amazing life include her daughter and best friend, Dotta Bissonnette, of Charles City; her seven grandchildren, Catherine Frampton, Willi Zipse-Grimm, Elwood Zipse Jr., twin granddaughters Dawn M. Eisinger and Diana L. Speed, Heather D. Meyer, and Renee I. D'Aloia; 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, W.R. Zipse, on July 10, 1979; her son and his wife, Elwood L. Zipse and Minerva; two grandsons, Daniel W. Shook and Jimmy R. Bissonnette; five sisters, Cora Eischeid, Esther Hoger, Gertrude Winn, Ruth Gerlach and Lena Lynch; and four brothers, Walter, Harold, Raymond and Gallus Hauser.

BELMOND - Dorance "Ole" Eugene Lauden Sr., 74, of Thornton, died Wednesday (Aug. 29, 2001) at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

CHARLES R. YOUNKE

MASON CITY - Charles R. Younke, 75, of 422 24th St. S.W., died Tuesday (Aug. 28, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

There was a gathering of family and friends on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City.

Memorials may be given to the Charles R. Younke Memorial Fund.

Charles R. Younke was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Mason City, the son of Charlie and Mary (Breed) Younke. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic School.

Chuck entered the U.S. Navy in September 1943, serving aboard the USS Unimak. He was discharged in November 1945.

He married Delores Clausen at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in 1949. Chuck began his apprenticeship with Henkel Construction Co. in 1951. He moved to Arizona and five years later returned to Mason City, where he began working for Davey & Moen Construction Co. He retired in 1988.

He was a member of the V.F.W., Brick Local No. 3 in Des Moines and received his 50-year gold card as a brick mason. He enjoyed fishing, camping and working with his hands.

He is survived by his wife, Delores, of Mason City; daughter, Sue Graf and her husband, Charlie, of Mason City; son, Charles D. Younke and his wife, Jo, of Mason City; daughter, Debbie Boster and her husband, Dennis, of Sheldon; grandchildren, Dawn Roszell, Jennifer Davis and husband, Brian, Missy Thofson and husband, Tim, Justin Younke and special friend, Amanda, Heather Schissel and husband, Jamie, David Boster, and Angie Boster; great-grandchildren, Bria, Zane, Jalin, Jacie, Tyler, Ethan, Cody and Caleb; two sisters, Mary Ann Major of Illinois and Alida Weber, of Mason City; and several nieces and nephews.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Fred; and sister, June.
