MERLE GLENN HEARN

DUMONT - Merle Glenn Hearn, 66, of Dumont died Thursday (Aug. 9, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Dumont Reformed Church in Dumont, with the Rev. Bob Scholten and the Rev. Jack Ritsema officiating. Burial will be in the Dumont Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home in Dumont.

KENNETH JEROME BOTHWELL

MASON CITY - Kenneth Jerome Bothwell, 74, of Mason City died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with military graveside honors by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with a public Scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

Kenneth Jerome Bothwell was born on March 2, 1927, in Fulda, Minn., the son of Leonard and Emma (Klug) Bothwell. He attended and received his education in the Fulda, Minn., school system, graduating from Fulda High School in 1945.

On April 17, 1945, Kenneth was inducted into the United States Navy, serving overseas in World War II, until his honorable discharge on Aug. 19, 1946, in Shoemaker, Calif.

After his honorable discharge he attended and graduated from Worthington, Minn., Junior College, and also attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., on a basketball scholarship.

He was united in marriage to Carole Reusse on Sept. 6, 1949, in the St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Fulda, Minn. During his life, Kenneth worked for J.F. Anderson Lumber Company in Fulda, Minn., and Waverly, Minn., before moving to Mason City, continuing to work for and manage the J.F. Anderson Lumber Company in Mason City.

In 1965, Kenneth started the Home Lumber & Builders Inc. in Mason City, and continued to remain active in the family business until the time of his death.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching his grandchildren play sports, and was an all-around sports enthusiast, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Carole Bothwell, of Mason City; his children, Steve Bothwell and his wife, Julie, of Mason City, Scott Bothwell and his wife, Janelle, of Mason City, and Kristin Anderson and her husband, Mark, of Forest City; eight grandchildren, Carl Bothwell, Heather Bothwell, Naomi Niles, Matthew Anderson, Heather Niles, Jenny Anderson, Nathan Bothwell, and John Bothwell; one great-grandson, Parker Niles; three brothers, Leon Bothwell and his wife, Royal, of St. Paul, Minn., Donald Bothwell, of Aberdeen, S.D., and Roger Bothwell and his wife, Marylin, of Blaine, Minn.; as well as several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

His parents preceded him in death.

FOREST CITY - Erwin Nerem, 72, of Forest City, died Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City.

Graveside Inurnment service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, at Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City, with the Rev. Gerald Dyste officiating. The service will be followed at 10:30 a.m. by a luncheon and time of fellowship at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

SHEFFIELD -Ruth E. Pinneke, 80, died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Ruth Esther (Merfeld) Penneke was born Jan. 14, 1921, in Greene, the daughter of John and Margaret (Hammel) Merfeld. She attended schools in the Greene area and proudly received her high school diploma in the spring of 1974.

On Sept. 23, 1939, Ruth was united in marriage with Theodore Pinneke at Independence, Iowa.

Ruth was employed at the Sheffield Produce, Sheffield Locker and was the bookkeeper for the Sheffield Cooperative Elevator for 17 years before retiring.

Ruth was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the UMW where she served as treasurer for many years. She was the treasurer for Congregate Meals and Senior Citizens for a number of years. She received the Governor's Award for Volunteers. She was an avid gardener, baker, seamstress and quilter. She spent many a day and night making quilts for all the family to treasure. She became ill with Parkinson's disease and was part of the Sheffield Care Center Family for the past two years.

Ruth will be sadly missed by her daughters, Diana (Ken) Schaefer, Sheffield; Janiece (Duane) Liekweg, Urbandale, and Shirley (John) Knipfel, Ames; grandchildren, Jean (Bill) Gallina, The Colony, Texas, Gary (Renee) Schaefer, Sheffield, Lori (Mark) Rempe, Story City, Scot (Patti) Liekweg, Jefferson, Robin (Matt) Blythe, Monroe, Wis., and Dawn Liekweg, Urbandale; and great-grandchildren, Kayla and Matthew Schaefer, Anthony and Staci Gallina, Karissa, Kelsi, Austen and Taelor Rempe, and Garrett and Gage Blythe. She is also survived by three brothers, Claude Merfeld, Lyle Merfeld and Kenneth Merfeld; and one sister, Arlene Kammrad.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, in July of 1997; a brother, Dale; and her parents.

GERALD FRANKLIN 'CHUB' FOUGHTY

RICEVILLE - Gerald Franklin "Chub" Foughty, 86, passed away Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospital, Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, with the Rev. Herschel Hawf officiating. Burial with military rites will be at 2:30 p.m. in Hampton Cemetery.

Gerald was born on June 4, 1915, in Hampton to Franklin Devello and Pearl Gertrude Blain Foughty. He attended local schools. Gerald served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.

"Chub" was united in marriage to Nancy Polen in November of 1934. He worked as a salesman for Wynn's Oil. After moving to California, Gerald worked at Lockheed for many years.

In February of 1963, he was united in marriage to Eva Marie Held in Winter Haven, Calif. After Eva's passing, Gerald was united in marriage to Augusta Fay Hicks.

Survivors include two daughters, Judith Privett and her husband, Glen, of Sacramento, Calif., and Sam Matsunaga and her husband, Richard, of Sacramento, Calif., two sons, Timothy Foughty and his wife, Teresa, of Charlotte, N.C., and Mark Foughty of Camarillo, Calif.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Genevieve Heins and her husband, Harry, of Riceville.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eva Marie; one daughter, Joyce Jenkins in 1995; two great-grandchildren, Michael and Patrick; and two brothers.

ELAINE RUTH PIKE

ST. ANSGAR -Elaine Ruth Pike, 79, died Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at her daughter's home in Brownsdale, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday At First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Elaine Ruth Wilde was born on July 9, 1922, to Walter and Helena (Diedrich) Wilde on the family farm in Mitchell County.

She was married on Oct. 7, 1945, to Lawrence Leonard Pike at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township. She was also baptized and confirmed at St. John's. Three children were born to Elaine and Lawrence, Linda Faye, Helen Marie and Wayne Erwin.

Elaine was a member of First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. She had just attended the June meeting of her circle where her niece Jane served. She was taken there by her daughter Helen, and when she returned to her home in Brownsdale, she made the statement that she felt like a "Queen for the Day." She was planning on returning for her circle's Due Day in October.

Elaine was a housewife and mother, working only from her home doing daycare and sewing. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother, always thinking of others before herself and always treating people equally. Elaine enjoyed her grandchildren and great -grandchildren. Family was very important to her as well as her friends.

Elaine is survived by one son, Wayne and his wife, Rhonda, of Sparta, Wis.; two daughters, Linda Unverzagt and her husband, Edward, of Brownsdale, Minn., and Helen Pike of Austin, Minn.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Nichole and Tyler Mundy and their children, Tyler, Alex and Miranda Lynch and Breanna Mundy, Andria Unverzagt and daughter, Rylie Ehmke, Jonathan Pike, Erika Pike and Joshua Pike; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Lois Beyer; and two brothers, LaVerne and Roland.

SYLVESTER J. PITZEN

STACYVILLE -Sylvester J. Pitzen, 90, died Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery, Stacyville.

Sylvester J. Pitzen was born on Sept. 29, 1910, in Adams, Minn., the son of Joseph and Anna (Simon) Pitzen. He married Dorothy Coan on June 27, 1933, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City.

In his younger years he enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and taxidermy.

Sylvester worked for the Stacyville Co-op Company for 48 years, 43 of those as the elevator manager. He also farmed and raised Murray-Gray cattle.

He was an active 4-H leader and a member of the Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Sylvester sat on the board of directors for FELCO, FELCO-STATEC and also Land 'o Lakes.

Sylvester is survived by his three sons, Tom Pitzen of Stacyville, Nick Pitzen of Stacyville and Steve Pitzen of Adams, Minn.; one daughter, Mary Ellen McGlashing of Cedar Rapids; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Father John Pitzen of Fairfax; and two sisters, Agnes Casley of Beaverton, Ore., and Marie Montavon of DeKalb, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; a son, John; and brothers, Gervin, Clem and Al.

PHILIP JOSEPH DASCH

DES MOINES - Philip Joseph Dasch, 55, of 250 N.E. 64th, Pleasant Hill, formerly of Mason City, died Sunday (Aug. 12, 2001) of cancer at Kavanagh House on 56th Street.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at New Hope Assembly of God Church, Urbandale. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Pleasant Hill. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City.

Visitation with the family present will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St., Des Moines, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa in the name of Philip Dasch.

Philip was born in Osage and lived in Cedar Rapids and Mason City. He was employed as a customer technician at Qwest.

Philip was a member of New Hope Assembly of God, Urbandale, the Knights of Columbus and CWA Union No. 7110 of Des Moines.

He enjoyed fishing.

Philip is survived by his wife, Lorie Dasch of Pleasant Hill; a son, Jason M. Dasch of Des Moines; a daughter, Brenda Marie Dasch of Oshkosh, Wis.; two stepdaughters, Heidi Henry and Tina Henry, both of Pleasant Hill; a stepson, Jordan Henry of Pleasant Hill; three sisters, Terry Gifford, Mason City, Cam Ent, Grinnell, and Nancy Wasicek, Mason City; and two brothers, Sonny Dasch, Manly, and Gary Dasch, Mason City.

DEAN HARLAN PLAGGE

LATIMER - Dean Harlan Plagge, 69, died peacefully at his home in Latimer Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) surrounded by family.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer with the Rev. Jeff Long officiating. Burial will be in the Marion Center Cemetery near Latimer.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Willim Funeral Home, Latimer.

Dean was born April 28, 1932, in rural Latimer, the son of George and Frieda (Reineking) Plagge. He was baptized on June 29, 1932, by the Rev. C. J. Barth and confirmed on March 25, 1945, by the Rev. H. H. Wintermeyer at Immanuel United Church of Christ-Marion Center. He was raised and educated in the Sheffield and Latimer areas and was a life-long member of Immanuel United Church of Christ.

Dean married Elaine C. Jensen at Immanuel United Church of Christ on June 13, 1951. Together they began farming near Sheffield and later moved to the family farm north of Latimer where they raised their family. In 1979 they started DE-J Feeds in Hampton and later expanded the business to Latimer. They moved to Latimer in 1988. After retiring from the elevator, Dean continued to work part-time for Prairie States Management Company.

Dean enjoyed fishing and attending sporting and other youth functions in the community. He was involved in numerous church activities including a recent mission trip to Denver, Colo. He was also involved with numerous area organizations including the Community Advisory Board for First Citizens National Bank of Mason City, the Board of ACCESS, Inc. in Hampton and the Latimer City Council. He was also actively involved with the recent capital campaign for the CAL Education Foundation.

Dean is survived by his wife, Elaine, and five children, Jackie (Howard) Lehman, Salt Lake City, Utah, Jody (Connie) Plagge, Latimer, Jeff (Sandra) Plagge, Waverly, Jay (Val) Plagge, Clear Lake, and James (Jane) Plagge, Orange City; and 14 grandchildren, Katherine and Julia Lehman, Nick, Luke and Mitch Plagge, Tom, Adam and Brian Plagge, Jena and Jake Plagge, and Andy, Alex, Jack and Kate Plagge. He is also survived by one sister, Elvera Logan, Mason City; three brothers, Dallas Plagge, Sheffield, Merlin Plagge, Sheffield and Maynard Plagge, Orlando, Fla.; and his many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, an infant daughter and his parents.

Dean is remembered for his community service and his love of people, especially his wife, children, grandchildren and the young people of the community. The family requests that memorials be directed to ACCESS, Inc., Habitat for Humanity or Immanuel United Church of Christ Memorial Fund.

MARY NAOMI HARRIMAN

KANAWHA - Mary Naomi Harriman, 94, of Albert Lea, Minn., formerly of Kanawha, died Saturday (Aug. 11, 2001) at Good Samaritan Home in Albert Lea.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Kanawha, with Pastor Susan Detwiler officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

CHARLES WILLIAM J. PICKERING

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - Charles William Pickering, 76, of Country Meadows of West Shore, died Wednesday (Aug. 8, 2001) at Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

He was a retired vice president and head of the Dam and Flood Control Section-Hydraulic Division of Gannett Fleming Corddry and Carpenter, Inc., now the Gannett Fleming Project Development Corporation, Camp Hill. He was a member of the United States Committee of Large Dams, National Society of Professional Engineers and the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers.

A World War II Navy veteran of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, he won the American Defense Service Ribbon and Victory Ribbon.

He attended Mason City Junior College and Northwest Missouri State College. He received his bachelor of civil engineering and his master's of science in mechanics and hydraulics from the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa.

Mr. Pickering was a former Board Member of Harrisburg's Catholic Charities, a Harrisburg Diocese's Pre-Cana Leader and CFM facilitator. He was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland, Pa., and recently attended Mass at Cathedral Parish of Saint Patrick, Harrisburg.

Charles was born Nov. 11, 1924, in Manly to the late Walter and Josephine (Ciner) Pickering.

A daughter, Patrice A. Pickering of Camp Hill; a son, Jeff C. Pickering of New York City, N.Y.; his former wife, Mary Patricia Pickering of Mechanicsburg; a brother, Ernest Pickering of Sioux City; and two grandchildren, Nicholas G. Frangia of Fort Campbell, Ken., and Alexander C. Frangia of Camp Hill, Pa., survive him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Theresa Catholic Church, New Cumberland, Pa.

Alice Jeanette Ryan was born on Nov. 12, 1920, in Pontiex, Saskatchewan, Canada, to William Ryan and Mary Catherine (Grady) Ryan. When she was a young child, she moved with her parents to the Mitchell, S.D., area where she grew up in a family of 10 children.

She received a teaching degree from the Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell, S.D., and taught in the area for a short period.

Alice was married on July 2, 1941, to Richard H. Vickers in Council Bluffs. Their early married life was spent traveling throughout the country as Richard worked construction and Alice cared for their growing family. In 1953 they moved to Mason City where they spent many happy years raising their family. Alice and Richard moved to Greene in 1984 following Rich's retirement from Allied Mills.

Left to cherish Alice's memory are her husband, Richard H. Vickers of Greene; her children, Margaret Vickers of Des Moines, Richard W. Vickers and his wife, Mary Ann, of Greene, Michael Vickers and his wife, Joyce, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Patrick Vickers and his wife, Gaylene, of Greene, Mary Alice Perkins and her husband, Larry, of Prairie City, and Karen McMillan and her husband, Michael, of Omaha, Neb.; 11 grandchildren; eight siblings, Patricia Naylon of Omaha, Neb., Mary Gleason of Alexandria, Va., the Rev. Thomas Ryan of Sioux Falls, S.D., Roseann Barak of Elkhorn, Neb., Rita Gies of Annandale, Va., Ruth Novak of Muskego, Wis., Colleen Paris of Rockford, Ill., and Jim Ryan of Grandview, Mo.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Richard Ryan.

Alice was an enthusiastic member of the Catholic Church and spent many years worshiping at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City and later at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene. She remained close to her brothers and sisters over the years and enjoyed nothing more than sharing memories of their childhood years in South Dakota. She was a hard working and dedicated spouse, mother and grandmother who took great pride in her family.

Ruth Anne Oliver, 62, passed away peacefully during the night of Aug. 11 under the care of the Hospice of North Iowa.

Ruth Anne was born on July 5, 1939, in Rector, Pa., the daughter of Robert and Laura (Morris) Shaulis.

She will be sadly missed by her children, daughter, Laura Gade and son-in-law Bo of Jacksonville, Fla., and daughter, Debra Pace and son-in-law Alberto of Middletown, Conn.; her sister, Jo Lynn Feinstein and brother-in-law Bruce of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; her father, Robert Shaulis of Louisville, Ohio; and her full-time travel companion and dear friend, Paul Gordon.

Ruth Anne was visiting Iowa to attend RV rallies in Forest City. A free spirit, Ruth Anne spent the last four years as a full-time RVer, traveling across the country everywhere her heart and imagination would lead. Wherever she went, Ruth Anne made friends and touched lives with her ready smile.

Ruth Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Oliver, in July of 1980 and by her mother, Laura M. Shaulis. She will be remembered always in the lives of those she left behind.

MEDFORD, Ore. - JoAnn C. Noonen, sister of Shirley (Dillavou) Baas passed away Sunday morning (Aug. 5, 2001) at the age of 68. She had lived with cancer for two years.

She is survived by three daughters, one son, and her ex-husband, and one sister. JoAnn leaves nieces and nephews including Dick and Sandy Dillavou and Pat and Paulette Dillavou, all of Clear Lake, Jon Dillavou, of Mesa, Ariz., and Tom and Val Dillavou, of Rice Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

JoAnn visited and enjoyed Clear Lake numerous times.

LeRoy Edward Vanderwicken was born Jan. 24, 1913, in Grundy Center, Iowa, to John and Helen Vanderwicken.

He married Margaret E. Maplethorpe on June 24, 1939, in Toledo, Iowa. They were longtime residents of Grundy Center, where he was editor and publisher of the Grundy Register. After retirement in 1978, he and Margaret lived in Mesa, Ariz. for 20 years.

Roy graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1930, and received a B.A. degree in 1934, and J.D. degree in 1938, both from the University of Iowa.

While at the University, he played on the golf team for two years and participated in the University band for three years. While in law school, he was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa honor society and Gamma Eta Gamma law fraternity.

He served on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1945, acting as a communications officer aboard a troop ship in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, and later became a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W.

Roy was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center, Iowa; the Grundy Center Community Club; Rotary Club; and the Masonic Lodge.

He served for thirty years on the Grundy Center School Board and was a Director of the Grundy National Bank for thirty-six years. He also served for six years on the Iowa State Printing Board.

In Arizona, he was a member of the Apache Wells Country Club and the Apache Wells Community Church.

His lifelong passion was golf, and he enjoyed traveling in the United States and abroad.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; three children, Ann Schurtz and her husband, Dr. Russell, of Mason City, Virginia Grossman and her husband Dr. Arthur, of Everett, Wash., and Cynthia Vanderwicken, of Iowa City; five grandchildren; three nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, King Vanderwicken and his sister, Marian Nelson.

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Christopher Marc Morgan, 49, of River Falls, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday (Aug. 7, 2001) at his home in River Falls.

Christopher was born the son of Don and Patricia (Banken) Morgan on Jan. 26, 1952, in Mason City. Iowa. He attended high school in Mason City, Iowa, and Winona, Minn.

Chris married Lynne Kalm on Sept. 29, 1979, and they moved to San Diego, Calif. Chris was a truck driver for many years.

He was a 4.0 student at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, currently pursuing a career as a history teacher or a pastor.

He was a member of Servant of the Shepherd Lutheran Church and was instrumental in the start of the church.

Chris loved his family, John Wayne, reading, and classical music.

He is preceded in death by his father; daughters, Marta, Charlyne, and Caroline; father-in-law, Bill Kalm; uncle, Oscar Fewins and his wife Nina; uncle, Kenneth Moore; and his dog, Moose.

Roger Allan Hustrulid, the son of Bert and Ruth (Albin) Hustrulid, was born April 4, 1937, in Beresford, S.D. He graduated from Beresford High School in 1955.

He attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and served in the U.S. Army stationed in Southeast Asia and Hawaii.

On Sept. 8, 1963, he married Anne L. Behrens at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge. They lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., for four years, Beloit, Wis., for 10 years and Forest City since 1977. Roger had worked in the family construction business, the Beloit Corporation and Winnebago for 23 years.

He enjoyed his family, woodworking, camping and square dancing. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Winola Margaret (Wagner) Prull was born on July 30, 1916, in Wentworth, Wis., the daughter of John and Ethel (LeValley) Wagner. She was united in marriage to Clifford William Prull on May 25, 1938, at the United Methodist Church in Ackley.

She was a 1934 graduate of Geneva High School and graduated from Iowa State Normal School and Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls. Her early career included teaching in Iowa's rural one-room schools.

Her past and present artistic accomplishments included music composition and playing a wide variety of instruments including organ, piano, harp, violin, accordion and electronic keyboard; raising orchids, writing poetry, flower gardening, ceramics, and genealogy.

She was church organist for more than 30 years and served as choir director and Sunday school teacher for many years at the Geneva United Methodist Church. She was United Methodist Women President three times and was one of the organizers for the Geneva Woman's Club. She had composed more than 20 songs.

Those grateful for her life include three daughters, Sharon Abbas and her husband, Lyle, of Clear Lake, Gloria Burkle and her husband, Stan, of Nashua, and Aleyna Davisson and her husband, Larry, of DeSoto; a son, Dale Prull and his friend, Janice Owen, of San Jose, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Kevin (Amy) Burkle, of Crystal Lake, Ill., Kimbra (Kevin) Smyth, of San Jose, Calif., Todd (Patty) Burkle, of Monona, Cindy (Daryl) Hall, of Cedar Falls, Mark (Tami) Abbas, of Woodstock, Ga., Doug (Sara) Abbas, of Clear Lake, Matthew (Vanessa) Prull, of Walla Walla, Wash., Erik Davisson, of Austin, Texas, Alicia Burkle, of Chicago, Ill., Staci (David) Kraemer, of Little Falls, Minn., and Carla (Jeff) Betz, of San Jose, Calif.; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Wagner, of Duluth, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford, in 1991; and two brothers, Ted and John Wagner.

JAMES E. DAVIS

ALGONA - James E. Davis, 72, of Algona
, died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Private family services will be held at a later date in Harris.

James Davis of 312 W. Overmeyer Drive was born Feb. 12, 1929, in Edgar County, Ill. He was raised and received his education in Harris, Iowa.

On Nov. 5, 1955, he was united in marriage with Phyllis Joens at Spirit Lake. The couple lived in Forest City from 1958 to 1987, when they moved to Mason City. They have been residents in Algona the past year. While in Forest City, they owned and operated Davis Radio and TV.

James was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Algona and was a WW II veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis, of Algona; and his children, Lisa Bartz, of Grafton, Diane Engler, of Alamagordo, N.M., Darryl, of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Kathy Thilges, of Algona; nine grandchildren; brothers, William, of Harris and Dan, of Garner; and sisters, Doris Rubsam, of Worthington, Minn., Mary Michalica, of Clarendon Hills, Ill., and Marge Arp, of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Margaret (Lindley) Davis; a brother, Burton; and a sister, Dorothy.

JAMES D. COYLE

BEAVER DAM, Wis. - James D. Coyle, 66, of W9261 Highway S in Beaver Dam, died on Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at his home.

His funeral was held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Beaver Dam, with the Rev. David Bitler officiating. Entombment was at the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum in Fon du Lac, Wis.

Visitation was held on Monday, Aug. 6, at the Koepsell Funeral Home in Beaver Dam, and before services at the church.

Mr. Coyle was born on June 14, 1935, the son of Edward T. and Dulcie (Hartwig) Coyle, in Clear Lake. He was married to Judy Ryen on Dec. 2, 1961, in Slater.

Mr. Coyle graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford in 1953, and attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1956-1960. He was employed as a technical writer for Deere and Company for 30 years.

He loved children and devoted many volunteer hours coaching little league baseball. He loved the outdoors, and after retiring from Deere in 1990, his lifelong dream to own a farm came true.

Survivors include his wife, Judy; one son, Kirk Coyle, of Burnett, Wis.; one daughter, Karen (Roy Jr.) Barnes, of Waupun, Wis.; three grandchildren, Alicia, Andrew and Alizabeth Barnes; two sisters, Vivian (Gerald) Buss, of Hampton, and Doris Jeffrey, of Rockford; one sister-in-law, Mary Coyle, of Ventura; nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, Archie, Charles, Donald, Stanley and Edward Jr.

MARIE M. KOBERNUSZ

OSAGE - Marie M. Kobernusz, 85, of Osage, died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

She was born July 16, 1916, in Osage, the daughter of Charles and Christina (Braun) Mandler. She attended Osage schools.

Marie was united in marriage to Loyal "Shadow" Kobernusz on Aug. 13, 1936, in Manly. They lived in Osage most of their married life. Shadow died on Dec. 16, 1990. Marie passed away on what would have been their 64th wedding anniversary.

She was a member of the Osage American Legion Auxiliary.

Marie enjoyed her family; they were the most important thing in her life. She enjoyed going to Debbies for coffee with her daughters, granddaughter and sisters.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St. in Osage, with a 3:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service.

SOPHIA BAUER

MASON CITY - Sophia Francis Sinn Bauer, 90, of Mason City, died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) at her daughter's home in Des Moines.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the First Covenant Church, Hwy 122 East at Ohio Ave., with the Rev. Reggie Coleman and the Rev. Rich Murray officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Sophia was born Oct. 12, 1910, at Saybrook, Ill. She married Kenneth McLeod Bauer in Mason City, on May 11, 1939. They lived in Mason City most of their lives except for seven years when they lived in Missouri.

Sophia was a nurse in her early years and was a caring and loving homemaker in the later years of her life.

She and Kenneth were charter members of the First Covenant Church in Mason City, starting in 1947.

Her parents, James and Susan Sinn; three brothers, Lyle, Jack and James Sinn; her husband, and two infant children, Elizabeth and Keith, preceded Sophia in death.

After Kenneth's death in April 1987, Sophia lived with her two daughters, Dixie in Des Moines and Sue in Redondo Beach, Calif., and Washington, D.C. She also spent time at granddaughter's homes in Minneapolis and Hudson, Wis.

She loved the Mason City farm and returned each summer for several visits, often surrounded by many of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had an active and meaningful life traveling frequently around the country, visiting her family, always bringing warmness and love to all.

Sophia is survived by two daughters, Katherine Sue Shorter, of Washington, D.C., and Dixie Rogness, of Des Moines; two sons-in-law, Charles Shorter and Kennis Rogness; six grandchildren, Todd Rogness, Beth Coleman, Lori Cao, Julie Golay, Cavin Shorter and Jeff Shorter; and 16 grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Shorter, Tori, Colt, Dakota, and Weston Rogness, Grant and Grace Cao, Jeffrey, Lisa, Joshua and Laura Coleman, and Amber, Brittni, Nocole and Austin Golay.

MARY SMITH

PARKERSBURG - Mary Smith, 93, of Parkersburg, passed away on Sunday (Aug. 12, 2001) at her daughter's home in Clear Lake.

Her funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Schwartz Funeral Chapel in Aplington, with Mr. Robert Orr officiating. Burial will be in Maynes Grove Cemetery in Franklin County.

Mary, the daughter of George S. and Ella (Meyer) Meyer, was born Dec. 31, 1907, in Franklin County, where she received her education.

She spent most of her life on the family farm, where she was devoted to raising her children. She enjoyed reading her Bible - spending time in prayer - her children, grandchildren and entertaining friends and relatives.

Mary is survived by her husband, James Smith, of Parkersburg; five children, Harriet Finer and her husband, Eldon, of Clear Lake, Jean Brown and her husband, Robert, of Forest Ontario, Canada, Lloyd Van Ellen, of Waverly, Judy Meyst and her husband, Charles, of Southfield, Mich., and Robert Meinders and his wife, Nancy, of Aplington; two stepchildren, Elmer Smith and his wife, Anna, of Tampa, Fla., and Kenneth Smith and his wife, Donnis, of Cedar Falls; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild will be born in December; three sisters, Minnie Meyer, of St. Paul, Minn., Lena Swieter, of Iowa Falls, and Pearl Neilson and her husband, Thomas, of Royal Oak, Mich.; two brothers, Harm Meyer and his wife, Maxine, of Iowa Falls, and A. LILY M. IMLAY

CLEAR LAKE - Lily M. Imlay, 85, of 418 27th Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Following the service she will be cremated and inurnment will take place later in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

Lily was born July 4, 1916, in Lester, one of 15 children of Otto and Maren (Nielsen) Andersen who emigrated from Denmark to the United States in 1911. She attended school in Mason City.

Lily married Grant L. Imlay on July 9, 1933, in the Methodist Church in Mason City.

She worked for Mason City Tent and Awning as a cutter during WW II. She later worked for Como Photo and then worked for Lock Studio for 23 years as a printer, retiring in 1969.

Lily and Grant moved to Clear Lake in 1965. She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, crocheting and, most of all, being with her family.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Lily is survived by her three children, Robert Imlay and his wife, Muriel, of Clear Lake, Sharon Imlay Samson, of Chatsworth, Calif., and JoDee Calla Wilfong and her husband, Robert, of Temple Terrace, Fla.; six grandchildren, Mary Imlay, of Clear Lake, Blake Wilfong, of Temple Terrace, Fla., Adam Wilfong and his wife, Michele, of Spring Hill, Fla., Zoe Wilfong, of Rapid City, S.D., Ann Wilfong, of Malvern, Pa., and Eric Samson, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Alison and Jacob Wilfong; one brother, Ernest Andersen and his wife, Marion, of Mason City; three sisters-in-law, Beaulah Andersen, of Clear Lake, Ruth Andersen, of Big Stone, S.
