PEGGY LOU POWELL

MASON CITY - Peggy Lou Powell, 64, of 815 Sixth St. S.W. died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Harvest Time Church, 804 N. Tyler Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. George Johnson officiating. According to Mrs. Powell's wishes, her body has been cremated.

Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Peggy Powell Memorial Fund.

Peggy was born July 31, 1937, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd and Cecil (Sutton) Lamb.

She was a member of Harvest Time Church in Mason City who loved the Lord and being a part of her church community.

Peggy opened her arms to everyone around her, always enjoyed being with people, and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Peggy will be greatly missed by her four children, Michael Symes and his wife, Debi, of Mason City, Catherine Rand and her husband, Lee, of Garner, Colleen Symes and her son, of Clear Lake, and Duke Powell and his wife, Jeannie, of Mason City, 10 grandchildren, six great-granddaughters, nine brothers and sisters, and her lifelong companion, "Shchtzee."

She was preceded in death by her parents.

ALLISON - Helena L. "Gay" Pagles, 88, of Allison, died Wednesday (Aug. 15, 2001) at her home.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, with the Rev. Jerry Laehn officiating. Burial will be in Allison Cemetery in Allison.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Allison.

DENISE E. LEBECK

GREENE - Denise E. Lebeck, 47, of 117634 Sandhill Road, died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at her residence.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, with Pastor Nate Frazee of the Heritage United Methodist Church of Waverly officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in rural Clarksville.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral chapel.

JERRY D. ENGELHARDT SR.

CHARLES CITY - Jerry D. Engelhardt Sr., 62, of 2147 Ridgeway Ave., Charles City, died Wednesday morning (Aug. 15, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag, senior pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Lime Springs Cemetery, of Lime Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., Charles City.

Jerry was born one of nine children to Abner and Vera (Marten) Engelhardt on Jan. 7, 1939, in Howard County near Lime Springs. He graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1957. He then entered the Navy and served his country honorably during the Korean conflict.

He was a supervisor on the management team at White Farms and did custom farming. Following White's closing he became a supervisor for SKITEC in Waverly until retiring due to his health on May 7, 2001.

Jerry was married to Shirley Womack on Dec. 27, 1957, at Riceville, Iowa.

He later married Diana Jaeger at the Chapel on The Hill on Aug. 11, 1984, at Eldora.

He enjoyed camping, woodworking, testing his skills at ice fishing, hunting when he was younger, and working on his acreage. He had a fascination for trains and collected them along with toy tractors and antiques.

His love of animals carried through to his dog and cat, "Teddy and Peaches," and keeping an ample supply of bird seed. He also enjoyed reading the history of WWII.

Jerry was a member of the American Legion.

Those thankful in sharing Jerry's life include his wife, Diana, of Charles City; his mother, Vera Engelhardt, of Charles City; two daughters, Sheila and her husband, James Fain, of Waterloo, and Julie and her husband, Don Hase, of Osage; two sons, Jerry Engelhardt Jr. and his wife, Karla, of Marble Rock, and Scott Engelhardt and his wife, Susan, of Osage; one stepdaughter, Tamara Wessels, of Charles City; two stepsons, Tim Temple and his wife, Angie, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Troy Temple and his wife, Angie, of Jefferson. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, Sabrina, Tyler and Tarah Engelhardt, Kristal Benson, Zach and Logan Hase, Luke and Amber Gast, Michael Foster, Tonya, Bobby, Taylor and Chris Temple, Joshua and Riley Wessels; and one great-granddaughter, Micheala Benson. His sibling survivors include four sisters, Vickie Davies and her husband, Owen, of Charles City, Nancy Howland and her husband, Steve, of Davenport, Joanie Lukes and her husband, John, of Washburn, and Debbie Foster and her husband, Don, of Clarksville; one brother, Daryl Engelhardt and his wife, Lois, of Garrison; and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his father; two sisters, Peggy Engelhardt and Judy Harrington; and two grandaughters, Vanessa Temple and one in infancy.

DONALD D. DORR

BELMOND - Donald D. Dorr, 91, of Belmond passed away Wednesday (Aug. 15, 2001) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Memorial services for Donald D. Dorr will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Father David Beckman will officiate. Inurnment will take place in the St. Francis Cemetery in Belmond.

There will be no visitation. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond is in charge of arrangements.

Donald, the son of Albert and Nellie Fulton Dorr, was born June 28, 1910, in Belmond. Don grew up in Belmond where he attended the Belmond schools. Don began working with his father and brothers in A.R. Dorr Sons Construction.

Donald was united in marriage to Mildred Klinefelter on Nov. 26, 1942, in Belmond. The couple made their home in Belmond where he continued to work in construction. He retired in 1977.

Don enjoyed tinkering on things in the basement, building and flying kites and fishing. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church where he is remembered for ushering with his twin brother, Duane.

Don is survived by his wife, Mildred; one son, Doug and his wife, Carol, of St. Peters, Mo.; one brother, Larry and his wife, Doris, of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and seven brothers.

THELMA ARLENE BEENKEN

ALGONA - Funeral services for Thelma Arlene Beenken will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka, with Pastor Dennis Redeker and Pastor David Ullom officiating. Interment will be in Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Titonka.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Thelma Arlene Beenken was born on Oct. 11, 1930, at Buffalo Center, to Bielto and Rally Redenius Penning. She received her early education in the country school near Buffalo Center and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1947.

Thelma attended Waldorf College in Forest City for one year and then earned her teacher's certificate from the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She taught country school in the German Township #9 school near Titonka, until the school closed.

Thelma was married to Richard Beenken on Dec. 1, 1950, at the Ramsey Reformed Church near Titonka. The couple farmed north of Titonka. In 1986 Thelma and Richard retired from farming, and in 1994 they moved to Algona.

Thelma was a lifelong member of the Ramsey Reformed Church, where she was the church organist for more than 50 years. She was a Sunday School teacher, taught catechism, was junior choir director, was a Bible school teacher, was a member of the Ladies Circle, president of the Church Guild, and belonged to the R.C.W. Thelma also was a piano and organ teacher and was a former 4-H leader.

She enjoyed music, sewing, gardening, flowers, camping and fishing, but her greatest joy in life was her family, especially her grandchildren. Thelma and Richard had spent the last 17 winters in Arizona.

Thelma died on Wednesday (August 15, 2001) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona, at the age of 70.

Thelma is survived by her husband, Richard, of Algona; and her children, Beverly Klein and husband, Mark, of Wesley, Donovan Beenken and wife, Karla, Randy Beenken and wife, Becky, Rodney Beenken and wife, Shari, all of Titonka, and Roxann Roggenburg and husband, Darin, of Ankeny. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Trevor Beenken, Kelly and David Klein and Madison and Katelyn Beenken. Thelma is also survived by her brother, Robert Penning and wife, Magdalene, of Algona; and her sisters-in law, Dorothy Penning, of Buffalo Center, Mildred Penning, of Kiester, Minn., and Amelia Graves, of Buffalo Center.

Thelma was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clarence, Marvin and John Penning; and one infant brother.

BARBARA JANEL GRUIS

ALEXANDER - Barbara Janel Gruis, 62, of 467 230th St., died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jeff Dahlin officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. The family has requested that the casket be closed.

Memorials may be given to the Barbara J. Gruis Memorial Fund.

Barbara Jean Gruis was born Jan. 29, 1939, in Hampton, the daughter of William and Grace (Niehouse) Mollenbeck. Her family moved to Oregon at a young age, where Barbara would graduate from high school.

She received her bachelors degree in 1961 and her masters degree in 1964 in art education from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore. Barbara taught five years in Roseburg, Ore., one year in Freeport, Ill, and one year in Marshalltown.

Barbara married Preston B. Gruis on Aug. 15, 1968, at the Alexander Reformed Church in Alexander. Barbara and Preston grew corn and soybeans north of Alexander.

Barbara continued her line of work as an educator, raising her two children. Son, Darren, graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in bio-chemistry. Daughter, Kirsten, graduated from the University of Iowa with a medical degree.

Barbara was a member of a number of churches in her lifetime where she taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, oil painting and gathering family history.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Preston B. Gruis, of Alexander; son, Dr. Darren B. Gruis and his wife, Con Moothart, of Des Moines; daughter, Dr. Kirsten L. Gruis, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and one brother, John Mollenbeck and his wife, Jean, of Chenoa, Ill.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents.

JAMES R. 'JIMMY' LANE

CLEAR LAKE - James R. "Jimmy" Lane, 37, of Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) in rural Clear Lake.

His funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour before the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to the James R. Lane Memorial Fund.

Jimmy was born Oct. 5, 1963, in South St. Paul, Minn., the son of Donald and Kathryn (Pramer) Lane. He attended Clear Lake High School.

Jimmy was manager of the Neighbors Place in Hanlontown.

He enjoyed golfing, being around people, making them laugh, singing Karaoke, spending time with his family and most of all his nieces and nephews.

Jimmy is survived by two sisters and one brother, Royce Monson and her husband, Wayne, of Clear Lake, Bill Lane and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, and Jolene Thompson, of Clear Lake; sister-in-law, Lucy Lane Conde, of Puerto Rico, eight nieces and nephews, Eric and Melissa Monson, of Clear Lake, John Thompson, of New London, Minn., Jesse Mugan, Dalton Lane, Joshua Lane, all of Mason City, Christina and Richie Lane, of Puerto Rico; uncle and aunts, Don and Jane Lane, of Mesa, Ariz., Don and Jane Pramer, of Arizona, Peg Kazebier, of Redwood Falls, Minn., and Katie Lane, of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Richard Lane.

EDITH A. SHIRER

BELMOND - Edith A. Shirer, 79, of Belmond passed away Wednesday (Aug. 15, 2001) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services for Edith A. Shirer will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will take place in the Belmond cemetery.

Visitation for Edith A. Shirer will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Edith Ann (Schrage) Shirer was born April 22, 1922, near Allison, Iowa, in Butler County, the daughter of Ernest and Minnie (DeBower) Schrage. She was baptized May 14, 1922, at St. John Lutheran Church, Vilmer, Iowa, and confirmed April 5, 1936, at St. James Lutheran Church in Allison, Iowa. She attended country school and graduated from Allison High School in 1939. She attended business college in Des Moines.

On July 4, 1943, she married William A. Shirer in Denver, Colorado. In 1948 they moved to Belmond and she worked many years for the R.W. Courson Insurance Agency. She was a long time member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and worked with the Cub Scouts. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include three sons: Thomas Shirer and his wife, Avis, of Britt, Iowa; Steven Shirer and his wife, Karen, of Williamston, Michigan; and Michael Shirer and his wife, Karen, of Pasadena, California. Three granddaughters: Jennifer, Elizabeth and Allison. Two brothers: Robert Schrage and his wife, Erma, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas; Lester Schrage and his wife, Ann, of Allison, Iowa; and one sister, Viola, and her husband, Charles M. Mosher, of Allison, Iowa. One brother-in-law, Robert F. Shirer, and his wife, Mary Jo, of Atlanta, Georgia, and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Shirer, in 1973, one brother, Eugene Schrage, and her parents.

NICHOLAS PRONK

GARNER - Nicholas Pronk, 90, of Garner, passed away Tuesday (Aug.14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

His funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Nicholas Pronk, the son of Klaas and Fannie (DeVries) Pronk, was born July 3, 1911, on a farm near Edgerton, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed in the Christian Reformed Church. He graduated from Waterloo West High School and attended business college in Waterloo.

On Sept. 28, 1940, he married Myrl Pardun. Nick was the vice-president and sales manager of Farmers Hybrid Companies in Hampton, Iowa. He also was an instructor in the Dale Carnegie courses. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and music.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hampton where he had served as an officer and church board member. He was a Shriner and a 32nd Degree Mason.

He is survived by his wife, Myrl, of Britt; two sons, Tom Pronk and his wife, Barb, of Garner, and John Pronk, of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, Jay, Katie, Matt, Nicole, Joanna and Charlotte; and a great-granddaughter, Christian.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lue and Ralph; and a sister, Ella.

LESTER LEE HEDRICK

MASON CITY - Lester Lee Hedrick, 55, of 510 S. Illinois Ave. died Friday (Aug. 10, 2001) at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Jeff Dahlin of First United Methodist Church officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Lester was born May 2, 1946, the son of Wilson "Lee" and Freda (Wilkerson) Hedrick in Mason City. Lester was baptized at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. He later served his country in the United States Navy.

Lester loved to go for walks. He would start his morning by taking a refreshing stroll around Big Blue. He was always ready to cast his fishing line, or go hunting for the ultimate mushroom.

Lester was also known to have enjoyed going 4-wheeling with his family. His most cherished time was spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed sharing his time with them and being involved in their activities.

Lester will be greatly missed by his mother, Freda Hedrick, three children, Christina M. Hedrick-Daughenbaugh, of Mason City, Shane L. Hedrick and his wife Lyn, of Wasilla, Alaska, and Heidi A. Grant and her husband, Dan, of Mason City; four sisters, Linda Sexton and her husband, Melvin, of Mason City, Dianna Ehrhardt and her husband, Russell, of Manly, Cheryl Martie and her husband, Mark, of Manly, and Kim Ubben and her husband, Buff, of Ackley, six grandchildren, Dustin, Casey, Lee, Kelsey, Mitch and Savanna; and a special friend, Cynthia Leigh.

Mr. Hedrick was preceded in death by his father, Wilson Lee Hedrick; and one brother, Johnny Hedrick.

BETTY J. BUNS

WODEN - Betty J. Buns, 77, of Woden passed away Monday (Aug. 13, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery in Woden.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Woden with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Betty Jean Buns, the daughter of Gilman and Anna (Schauf) Hanna, was born Jan. 12, 1924 on a farm near Woden. She was baptized and confirmed at Grant Lutheran Church near Woden. She attended the rural schools of Grant Township and graduated from Buffalo Center High School.

On May 14, 1942, she was married to Kenneth Buns at Bethany, Mo. They lived in Santa Monica, Calif., Charles City, the Buffalo Center area and in 1954 moved to a farm east of Woden.

Betty helped on the farm and worked as a secretary at Thompson Insurance in Forest City. In September 1979 they retired from farming and moved into Woden.

She enjoyed her family, golfing, crafts, crossword puzzles and playing cards. She especially enjoyed knitting afghans for her grandchildren. Betty put her personal touch in everything she did.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband, Kenneth, of Woden; four sons, Randy Buns and his wife, Linda, of Clive, Timmy Buns and his wife, DeEtta, of Wilmington, N.C. , Bradley Buns and his wife, Ruth, of Woden, and Denny Buns and his wife, Mona, of Woden; eight grandchildren, Jason, Heather, Amy, Rayshel, Timmy Jr., Bret, Thomas and Casey Buns; one great-grandson, Austin Buns; a sister-in-law, Doryce Hanna, of Woden; a brother-in-law, Clarence "Swatty" Watson, of Britt; and many nieces and nephews.

Her parents; a sister, Marjorie Watson; and a brother, Bruce Hanna, preceded her in death.

MASON CITY - Peggy Lou Powell, 64, of 815 Sixth St. S.W., died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Harvestime Church, 804 N. Tyler Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. George Johnson officiating. According to Mrs. Powell's wishes, her body has been cremated.

Peggy was born July 31, 1937, in Mason City, the daughter of Lloyd and Cecil (Sutton) Lamb.

She was a member of Harvestime Church in Mason City, who loved the Lord and being a part of her church community.

Peggy opened her arms to everyone around her, always enjoyed being with people, and was loved by everyone who knew her.

Peggy will be greatly missed by her four children, Michael Symes and his wife, Debi, of Mason City, Catherine Rand and her husband, Lee, of Garner, Colleen Symes and her son, of Clear Lake, and Duke Powell and his wife, Jeannie, of Mason City, 10 grandchildren, six great-granddaughters, nine brothers and sisters, and her lifelong companion, "Shchtzee."

MASON CITY - Dorothy "Dodie" Y. Pippert, 86, of Mason City and formerly Northwood, died Sunday morning (Aug. 12, 2001) at USA Healthcare in Mason City.

Memorial services for both Dorothy and her husband, Jess, will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, at the Northwood United Methodist Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Richard Jensen officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

She donated her body to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Dorothy was born on April 4, 1915, at Oskaloosa, the daughter of John Andrew and Cora (McKnight) Young. She graduated from Mason City High School and then attended teachers college.

She lived and worked in Minneapolis and later lived with her husband, Jess, in New York, while he was in the service. Dodie and Jess were united in marriage on June 1, 1944, in Mason City.

After returning to Iowa, she was a teacher at Osage and Nashua. She also was a well-loved pre-school teacher. She retired from teaching in 1975 when they moved from Osage to Northwood.

They made their home in Northwood for many years, and in November of 1997 they moved to Mason City. Dorothy was excellent at crafts and played the piano to entertain friends and family. Her love of animals extended to her favorite dogs, Sheba and Bear.

Dodie was a kind, loving, thoughtful and caring lady and will be greatly missed by her niece, Prudy, and her family.

She is survived by one sister, Irene Wagner, of St. Paul, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jess, in June 1998; and three brothers Johnny, Orville and Charles Young.

ALEXANDER - Barbara Janel Gruis, 62, of 467 230th St., died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Barbara Janel Gruis was born Jan. 29, 1939, in Hampton, the daughter of William and Grace (Niehouse) Mollenbeck. Her family moved to Oregon at a young age, where Barbara graduated from high school.

She received her bachelor's degree in 1961 and her master's degree in 1964 in art education from the University of Oregon in Eugene. Barbara taught five years in Roseburg, Ore., one year in Freeport, Ill., and one year in Marshalltown.

Barbara married Preston B. Gruis on Aug. 15, 1968, at the Alexander Reformed Church in Alexander. Barbara and Preston grew corn and soybeans north of Alexander.

Barbara continued her line of work as an educator, raising her two children. Son, Darren, graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in bio-chemistry. Daughter, Kirsten, graduated from the University of Iowa with a medical degree.

Barbara was a member of a number of churches, where she taught Sunday school.

She enjoyed gardening, traveling, oil painting and gathering family history.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Preston B. Gruis, of Alexander; son, Dr. Darren B. Gruis and his wife, Con Moothart, of Des Moines; daughter, Dr. Kirsten L. Gruis, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and one brother, John Mollenbeck and his wife, Jean, of Chenoa, Ill.

Charles I. Patridge was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Maynard, the son of Irving A and Rena B. (Hungerford) Patridge. He graduated from Maynard High School, then from Upper Iowa University at Fayette in 1947 and received his master's degree from Michigan State University in 1969. After graduating from Upper Iowa, Charles taught school at Lime Springs for one year.

He married Doris B. Goodman on Aug. 11, 1944, in Chester. Charles farmed for five years then returned to teaching in 1957 in Decorah.

Charles and Doris moved to Mason City in 1960 when Charles became a drivers education instructor. He taught in Mason City for 26 years, retiring in 1986. Charles was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Benevolence Lodge No. 145 A.F. & A.M., where Charles was a 50-year member, DeMolay & Rainbow Dad, White Shrine, Eastern Star, the N.E.A., I.S.E.A., M.C.E.A., Iowa Drivers Education Association and the National Drivers Education Association.

Charles volunteered at First United Methodist Church, area nursing homes, Park Hospital and North Iowa Mercy Medical Center, West Campus.

For five winters, Charles and Doris volunteered for Nomad Missions, a service project through the church. Charles was also an avid fisherman.

Charles is survived by his wife, Doris B. Patridge, of Mason City; son, Donald C. Patridge and wife, Connie, of Davenport; daughter, Patricia A. Hehr and her husband, Erhart, of Oelwein; daughter, Kathrine D. Hayes and husband, Philip, of Hopkinsville, Ky; son, Paul I. NORTHWOOD - Lester E. Gullickson, 91, of Northwood, died Wednesday (Aug. 15, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Lester Everett Gullickson, son of Malcolm and Minnie (Abraham) Gullickson, was born April 3, 1910, on the Gullickson Century Farm where his father and grandfather also farmed. Lester farmed the land until 1974 and lived on the same farm all of his life.

He was baptized at the South Shell Rock Church and confirmed at the North Shell Rock Church by the Rev. Carl Ylirsaker. He attended country school in Grove Township and Northwood High School.

He married Irene Hagen on Dec. 17, 1933. They had two children, Delores Ida Nelson, who died on April 28, 1989, and Kenneth Lester Gullickson. He enjoyed fishing, taking care of his lawn and, most of all, his family.

He is survived by his wife, Irene, of Northwood; one son, Kenneth Gullickson, of St. Peters, Mo.; three grandchildren, Daniel Kell, of Marshalltown, Vickie Neuzil, of Lakeville, Minn., and Diana Kirschbaum, of Savage, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Tyler Neuzil, Briana Neuzil, Dillon Kirschbaum, and Colton Kirschbaum.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Delores Ida Nelson; and one sister, Myrtle Gullickson.

CHARLES E. 'CHUCK' CUMMING

ALFRED, Maine - Charles E. "Chuck" Cumming, a resident of Lady Slipper Lane, formally Webhannet Harbour Road, Wells, Maine, died Friday morning (Aug. 17, 2001) at his daughter's residence in Springvale after a long illness.

He was born in Reinbeck, Iowa, son of Charles W. and Harriet Smith Cumming, and is a graduate of West Waterloo High and The University of Wyoming.

A veteran of WWII, he served his country as master sergeant in the U. S. Army. He was recognized and decorated for his heroism at Omaha Beach in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. He served in military government in Germany before being honorably discharged.

He married Janice E. Tatum of Nora Springs on Jan. 31, 1947, and together they provided a loving home to raise their four children.

Mr. Cumming was employed as a physical education director at Eldora Boys Reformatory before starting his successful career in sales. He was a sales rep for Wilson Sporting Goods in Des Moines, Iowa, and went on to become vice president of sales for Etonic Golf Shoes in Brockton, Mass., president of Stylo Matchmakers Golf Weymouth, Mass., vice president of Ajay Enterprises Delavan, Wis. He was co-owner of Hardware Hank in Mason City, Iowa, and held various golf sales rep and consulting positions.

He always felt very strongly about volunteering and working to better the communities where he and Janice lived. He was a 56-year member of the Masonic Lodge in Iowa and Ocean Lodge in Wells, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Shrine Temple for 51 years and a very active member of the Wells Rotary Club for many years. An honor he was most proud of was the Paul Harris Fellow Recognition from the Wells Rotary.

Mr. Cumming loved a challenge and was always eager to learn and try something new or take on a new project. He made the most of everyday and charmed everyone with his quick wit. He will be remembered for his generosity and total devotion to his family and friends.

He is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Janice E. Cumming, who died March 31, 1999.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Cumming, of Mason City; three daughters, Peggy Drummey, of Springvale, Maine, Claudia E. Schultz of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Myra J. Foxen of Yukon, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and his dog, Freckles.

A Masonic service will be held at 1 p.m. today and an memorial service will follow at the Wells Congregational Church, Post Road Wells, Maine, with the Rev. Gordon Miller officiating. Interment will be in Nora Springs, Iowa.

DR. CHARLES D. RICE

OSAGE - Charles Dean Rice, 79, of Osage died Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Charles Dean was born to Chester and Leota (Hungerford) Rice on the 25th of December, 1921, in Osage. He attended school in Osage and Waterloo, Iowa, and graduated from Osage High School in 1940.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Jan. 27, 1941, and served his country in WWII in New Guinea. He was honorably discharged from the service in January of 1945. He was awarded several medals, including two Bronze Stars, Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He attended the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Ill., and received his doctor of optometry degree in 1948. He opened his practice in January of 1949 and continued his practice in Osage for 51 years. He always enjoyed living and working in his hometown of Osage.

Dean was united in marriage to Gloria Parr on Feb. 18, 1951, and they celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. They were blessed with two children, Deborah and David. He is so sadly missed by his wife and his children and their families, whom he loved so much.

Dean was baptized as a youth and was a member of First Baptist Church of Osage. The last few years he attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Osage. Charles was also a member of the Osage American Legion Post No. 278 and the Osage V.F.W. Post No. 7920.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria, of Osage; his daughter, Deborah Farkas and her children, Rachel and Amy, of Osage; his son, David and his wife, Linda, and their children, Katie and Jason, of Osage; his sister, Marilynn Horner of Vandalia, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Irene Rice of Orlando, Fla.; and an aunt, Margaret Rice of Osage; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; a brother, John Rice; a nephew, David Horner and his family; and a niece, Valerie Erikson.

His funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Osage, with the Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Cecil Mae (Walls) Broers, the daughter of Isaac and Lola (Sanders) Walls, was born on Jan. 3, 1907, at Modesto, Ill.

She was united in marriage to Emil J. Broers on Dec. 29, 1926, in Mason City. The couple farmed in rural Mason City. After retiring in1970, the couple moved into Clear Lake. Cecil was a wonderful homemaker who loved to take care of her children, and later, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking and gardening, and she took great pride in her flower garden.

Cecil is survived by two sons, Billy Broers and his wife Marilyn, of Mason City, and Emil Broers Jr. and his wife Anita, of Ventura; six grandchildren, Janell Hejlik and her husband Brick, Darla Steenhard and her husband Gary, Alesa Sweers and her husband Ron, Twyla Doyle and her husband Bryant, Troy Broers and his wife Dana, and Tom Broers and his wife Tanya. 14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St, Clear Lake, with a scriptural wake service taking place at 7 p.m. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to service time at the funeral home on Monday.

Charles Norbert Lenhart, the son of John and Christine (Nilles) Lenhart, was born on Oct. 23, 1909, at Clarion. He spent most of his childhood in South Dakota, where he also attended country schools. He worked all over the country, and traveled a great deal before moving to Mason City, where Charlie met Virginia Manning. The couple was wed on Jan. 3, 1946, in Mason City.

While living in Mason City, Charlie raised his family and he worked for Gibbs Cook as a painter. Charlie and Virginia moved to Clear Lake in 1968, and in 1984 Virginia passed away. After retirement, Charlie opened the South Point Saw Shop, and remained active sharpening saws until 1990. On Sept. 26, 1987, Charles was united in marriage with Barbara Verhuel at Clear Lake. They remained in Clear Lake their entire married life. Charlie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, and he loved to spend his free time fishing, dancing, being a carpenter, and listening to or watching Minnesota Twins games. He was indeed their biggest fan.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Barbara Lenhart, of Clear Lake; his children and their families, Linda Halvorsen and her husband, Tim, of Forest City, their children, Benjamin, Daniel, and Genevieve Halvorsen; Sue Snyder and her husband, Bill, of North Richland Hills, Texas, their children, Kristine Johnson and Victor Snyder; and Tom Lenhart and his wife, Coleen of Houston, Texas, their children, Erica, Brian and April Lenhart; and a brother, Art Lenhart of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Virginia in 1984; two sisters, Sally Rotter and Betty Lenhart; and two brothers, John Lenhart and a brother in infancy.

ALBERT LEE LANSAW

MASON CITY - Albert Lee Lansaw, 73, Mason City, died Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Graveside inurnment services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2001, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. There will be a flag folding presentation by the Mason City Veterans Memorial association. There will be no visitation. According to his wishes, his body was cremated.

Albert Lee Lansaw was born on July 9, 1928, the son of Bert and Etta (Cowan) Lansaw in Joplin, Missouri. He attended and received his education in the Joplin, Missouri school system. After completing his schooling, he started driving over the road and was the owner and operator of a tractor-trailer. On June 20, 1952, he was inducted into the U.S. Army in Denver, Colorado, serving in the 9th Infantry Division during the Korean Conflict until his honorable discharge on June 18, 1954, at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. After his honorable discharge he continued to drive over the road tractor and trailer for Charlie Davis of Mason City and the longest for Ace Lines, driving for 42 years until his retirement in 1988. After his retirement he was a volunteer driver for the Lutheran Church in Ankeny, drove computer bus for the junior college in Ankeny, and also for Rent-A-Dent in Mason City, transporting cars.

Albert lived in the Des Moines and Ankeny area having a lawn care business, before moving to Mason City in 1998.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn Morse in 1948; she preceded him in death in October 1998.

He enjoyed fishing, leisure drives, picnicking with his family, rebuilding bicycles for children who did not have a bike, and gardening, but his great love and enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Local Truckers Teamster Union #147.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Mark Lansaw and his wife Joyce, of Mason City, and Leanne Craig of Lenoir, N.C.; four grandchildren, Lisa Craig, Brandon Craig, and Logan Craig, of Lenoir, N.C., and Lynn Lansaw, of Mason City; a sister, Luella Kiessling of Gresham, Ore.; a special aunt, Lora Lansaw, of Joplin, Mo.; his mother-in-law, Ruby Morse, of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Carolyn

Lansaw of Mason City; two nieces, Julie Lansaw of Washington, D.C., and Jennifer "Jenny" Lansaw, of St. Ansgar; a nephew, Kevin Lansaw of Mason City; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides his wife, his parents, two infant daughters, Lisa Kae Lansaw and Lyn-Marie Lansaw and a brother, Gerald Lansaw, preceded him in death.

BRITT -Donald Elmer Sampson, 84, of Britt, passed away Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at his home in Britt.

Funeral services for Donald Sampson will be Tuesday, Aug.21, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with Father Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery near Britt.

Don, the son of Edward John and Mitilda Thompson Sampson was born May 5, 1917, at Nevada, Iowa. He attended Milford Township Schools in Nevada, Iowa.

Don was united in marriage with Lucille J. Breen on June 7, 1939, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Ames, Iowa, by the Rev. Joseph Campbell. To this union were born three children: Josephine Marie, Patricia Ann and Jerome Edward.

Don and Lucille farmed at Roland, Iowa, moving to Britt in 1947. They moved from the Britt area in 1961 and eventually retired to Prescott Valley, Ariz. They moved back to the Britt area in 1995 to be close to family. Don was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

Don is survived by his wife Lucille; three children, Josephine (Sampson) Lang and her husband, Edward, of Britt, Patricia (Sampson) Byers, of Britt, and Jerome Sampson and, Jeanne, of Arvada, Colo.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four brothers, Clarence, of Story City, Arnold and his wife, Alma, of Story City, Glenn and his wife, Ethyleen, of Nevada, Loren and his wife, Arlene, of Ankeny; and two sisters, Inez (Sampson) Rudny, of Mesa, Ariz. and Ione (Sampson) French, of Brooklyn, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Evelyn (Sampson) Farthing and Grace (Sampson) Jenson.

GARNER - Donald Dornbier, 67, of Garner, passed away Thursday (Aug. 16, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Donald, the son of Clarence and Elizabeth Miller Dornbier, was born Jan. 4, 1934, in Wesley. He grew up in the Wesley area and graduated from Wesley High School. Following graduation, Don was employed by Ron Newbrough Trucking and later the Farmers Co-op Society in Wesley.

Don was united in marriage with Rose Nedved on March 30, 1959, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. The couple lived in the Duncan and Britt area before moving to their farm near Duncan in 1966. At that time Donald began farming and custom corn shelling. He later was also employed by Winnebago Industries in Forest City. Don enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing "500", fishing, hunting, and farming the "Dornbier Garden Spot".

Don is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons and their families, Paul and his wife, Joyce, and their children, Parker and Pryce, of Sheffield, and Phillip and his wife, Michelle, and their children, Kim and Andrew, of Garner; two brothers, Eugene Dornbier of Wesley, Edward Dornbier and his wife, Rosa, of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters, Miki Killin and her husband, Mark, of Des Moines, Sally Hejlik and her husband, Gary, of Britt; brother-in-law, George Tusha of Garner, and sister-in-law Rosemary Dornbier Snyder of Wesley.

Mamie Anna Marek was born March 10, 1904 in Chicago, the daughter of Jim and Flora V. (Kassel) Marek. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 1923. She then went on to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls (now University of Northern Iowa), graduating with a B.A. degree in teaching. She taught elementary grades in the North Iowa district. She also graduated form Hamilton Business College and then went to work for Western Electric Co., Chicago as a bookkeeper, during the Depression years. She had been a resident of the Heritage Care Center for the past 14 years.

Survivors include a sister, Madalene K. Fiala and husband Wesley F., of Mason City; nephew, Wesley R. Fiala and wife, Eleanor, of Mason City; niece, Sharon Fiala Tatro and husband, Clifford, of Georgetown, Texas; great nephews, W. Michael Fiala, of Chicago, David Fiala, of Nashville and Keith Fiala, of Austin, Texas; great-great-nephews, Jonathan Fiala, Chicago and Coleman Fiala, of Nashville; and a great-great-niece, Krista Fiala, of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Esther Marek, Florence Kartel and an infant brother, Joseph Kartel, Jr.

Thomas Joe Ruiz was born March 9, 1954, the son of Candelario and Isabel (Gomez) Ruiz in Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School and later went on to work at Holnam Cement Company.

On June 22, 1974, Thomas was united in marriage to Echo Harden in Mason City and to this union two children were born. Thomas enjoyed playing pool and was a member of the Mason City Men's Pool League for many years. He loved to listen to Tejano music and play with his dog "Tripper". Most of all, Thomas looked forward to spending time with his family and friends. Thomas was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Those thankful for having shared in his life include his wife Echo; one daughter, Autumn Ruiz, of Mason City; one son, Matt Ruiz and his special friend, Sarah Sullivan, of Ames; his father, Candelario Ruiz; his mother-in-law, Wanda Reisinger and her husband, Dick; two sisters, Candace Colorado and her husband, Alfonso, of Kansas City, Mo., Margaret Wheeler and her husband, Mark, of Seattle, Wash.; one brother, Felix Ruiz and his fiancée, Liz, of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters-in-law, Connie Picken and her husband, Arlyn, of Bellevue, April Carlton and her husband, Stan, of Arvada, Colo., Ginger Brillhart and her husband, Bill, of Broomfield, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Elmer Harden and his wife, Bonnie, of Mason City; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
