MAMIE ANNA MAREK

MASON CITY - Mamie Anna Marek, 97, of 501 S. Kentucky, died Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at the Heritage Care Center.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City with the Rev. Bill Poland of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating.

There will be no visitation. Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City is in charge of arrangements.

Mamie Anna Marek was born March 10, 1904 in Chicago, the daughter of Jim and Flora V. (Kassel) Marek. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 1923. She then went on to Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls (now University of Northern Iowa), graduating with a B.A. degree in teaching. She taught elementary grades in the North Iowa district. She also graduated from Hamilton Business College and then went to work for Western Electric Co., Chicago as a bookkeeper, during the Depression years. She had been a resident of the Heritage Care Center for the past 14 years.

Survivors include a sister, Madalene K. Fiala and husband Wesley F., of Mason City; nephew, Wesley R. Fiala and wife, Eleanor, of Mason City; niece, Sharon Fiala Tatro and husband, Clifford, of Georgetown, Texas; great nephews, W. Michael Fiala, of Chicago, David Fiala, of Nashville and Keith Fiala, of Austin, Texas; great-great-nephews, Jonathan Fiala, Chicago and Coleman Fiala, of Nashville; and a great-great-niece, Krista Fiala, of Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Esther Marek, Florence Kartel and an infant brother, Joseph Kartel, Jr.

DOROTHY M. SYVERSON

LAKE MILLS - Funeral services for Dorothy M. Syverson will be 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor Jeanne Martin officiating. Burial will be at Sunnyside Cemetery in Lake Mills.

Visitation will be held one hour before services at the church.

Dorothy Mae Syverson, daughter of Henry and Mary (Zander) Hankner, was born May 17, 1921, in Tripoli. She graduated from Tripoli High School in 1938 and earned a Teacher Certificate from the University of Northern Iowa in 1940.

She taught Kindergarten for five years in Ames, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Clifford L. Syverson on Aug. 11, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Clifford was a third year student at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University at the time of their marriage.

They then moved to Lake Mills, Iowa, in September of 1945 and lived there 33 years where her husband practiced Veterinary Medicine. She worked as an appointments secretary for the Veterinary practice.

She was also a long term member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Lake Mills. In 1978, Dorothy and her husband sold the Veterinary practice in Lake Mills and moved to Lawrence, Kan. where they have resided to the present time. Her husband served as a relief Veterinarian for small animal hospitals from 1978 to 1988 when he retired. Dorothy served as a homemaker and mother.

She and her husband also served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library.

Dorothy Syverson passed away on Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kan.

She is survived by her husband, Clifford, of Lawrence, Kan.; two sons, Mark and Dean, both of Lawrence, Kan.; one brother, Robert Hankner; and two sisters, Mildred Ambrose and Phyllis, all of Tripoli, Iowa.

DEAN WARREN THOMPSON

AURORA, Colo. - Dean Warren Thompson, 75, of Aurora, Colo., formerly of Mason City, died Friday (Aug. 17, 2001) at home.

Memorial services will be held today in Aurora, Colo. Memorial services will held at 1 p.m. on Friday at the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St. in Mason City. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Memorials may be given to Hospice or First Baptist Church.

CHARLES CITY - Esther L. Fish, 77, died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at Riverside Chautauqua Nursing Home in Charles City.

WILLIAM ELLSWORTH YOUNG SR.

CLARION - William Ellsworth Young Sr., 82, of Clarion, passed away Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at the Community Memorial Hospital in Clarion.

Memorial services for William Young will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Clarion, with Pastor Lavonne Kaasa officiating. Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion. Military rites will be provided by the American Legion Post #246 of Clarion.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Dugger Willim Funeral Home in Clarion and one hour prior to services at the church.

William Ellsworth Young, the son of Emma Claire Noble Young and Daniel Burdette Young was born July 11, 1919, in Delaware County, Iowa, near Manchester.

He served five years in the Army and was in England, Africa, Sicily, and Italy during World War II with the 113th Cavalry Regiment, Red Horse Unit, part of the Fifth Army.

He kept in touch with his Army buddies at yearly reunions for all of his life. The Army experience was an important part of his life.

He attended St. Ambrose College in Davenport and Coe College in Cedar Rapids.

Bill was married to Lorraine Bushnell, of Manchester, on Sept. 5, 1946. To this union were born three children, Deana Young Stock, William Richard Young, and Burdette Austin Young. After moving to Clarion in 1956, Bill established Youngco, Inc. a grain care company, and later he expanded his business to include transferring grain and other products at the site of railroad derailments.

Bill is survived by his wife, Lorraine; children, Deana and husband, Mitch Stock, of Modesto, Calif., William Richard and wife, Nancy Jensen Young, of Ankeny, and Bud and wife, Bonnie Darbyshire Young, of Clarion; seven grandsons, William Grant Young, and Michael Young, of Des Moines, Greg, Steve, and Dan Stock, of California; and Tim and Andrew Young, of Clarion; four great-grandchildren, William Ross Young and Carter Young, of Des Moines, and Alexandra and Daniella Stock, of Santa Clara, Calif. He is survived by a brother, Dean Young and his wife, Claire, of Vancouver, Wash.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Noble "Bud" and Robert Young; and sisters, Ethelynne Harris, Helen Sue Taylor, and Betty Gearhart.

Bill cared deeply for his community and his friends, and was Mayor of Clarion from 1977 to 1983. He was particularly interested in youth projects and was a member of First Methodist Church in Clarion.

RUTH H. JACKSON

GREENE - Funeral services for Ruth H. Jackson, 90, of 522 N. Fourth St., Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Greene, with Pastor Ashok Patet officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Helen Ruth Plant was born Jan. 23, 1911, on a farm near Ogden, Webster County, the youngest of five children of Gustaf Ossian and Minnie Louise (Benson) Plant, and died Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines of a heart attack she suffered while attending the Iowa State Fair.

Ruth's father immigrated from Sweden and served as a minister of the Swedish Covenant Church. Her father died when she was two years old, leaving her mother the responsibility of raising the children. Ruth attended country school and graduated from Gowrie High School. She also attended Tobin Business College in Fort Dodge.

On Jan. 21, 1938, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Long Jackson at the Christian Church in Boone. They made their home in Boone until 1951 when they moved to Greene purchasing the Maxson Cleaners which they operated for 40 years.

Ruth enjoyed cooking. One of her specialties was the 14 egg, "made-from-scratch" angel food cake. When she was nine years, old she cooked the noon meal for her brother across the road. She helped her mother cook for the family and threshing crews. Later she worked at a restaurant in Boone, where she met her husband-to-be, Kenneth Jackson.

She was active in the United Methodist Church in Greene where she held various offices, and was a member of the Women's Society and the church choir. She was a member of the Federated Womans Club, Ladies Embroidery Club, and the Round Grove Country Club.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, on Feb. 28, 1999, her parents; one sister, Louise Plant; and two brothers, Hugo and Magnus Plant.

She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Emelie and Alvin Koeneman, of Waverly, and Linda and Jerry Beatty, of Indianola; four grandchildren, Brad and his wife, Sue Koeneman, of Princeton, N.J., Teresa and Gene Cavasos, of Portsmith, Va., Ted and Maren Beatty, of Conroe, Texas, and Elizabeth and Sergio Bonilla, of Austin, Texas; and six great-grandchildren, Spencer, Sydney, Dylan, David, Devin, and Deric; one brother, Verner Plant, of Gowrie.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the Ruth H. Jackson Memorial Fund in care of the family to be designated to the United Methodist Church in her memory.

ANN L. HERMANSON

LAKE MILLS - Ann L. Hermanson, 91, of Lake Mills, died Monday (Aug. 20, 2001) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Leland, with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be in Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Mittelstadt Funeral Home in Lake Mills and one hour prior to services at the church.

JULIA SHANE

AUSTIN, Minn. - Julia Shane, 85, of Austin, Minn., died Saturday (Aug. 18, 2001) at Burr Oak Manor where she was a resident.

Julia was born Oct. 23, 1915, in Austin, Minn. to Frank and Anna (Steiner) Wendel. She had several positions of work throughout her lifetime including home care and clothing care.

She was an auxiliary member of the Eagles Club, VFW and Moose. Julia spent several years serving and working with the VFW and Moose and then settled to one position with the Moose where she served several years. She had several positions in the kitchen area with her last position preparing bread baskets. Everyone there knew her as The Bread Lady.

She had served the public in many different ways and was well praised by her peers and well liked by many people. Julia was the last born in her family. She was always called the baby and at that time the family spoke mostly German. By the time she came along the schools were required to teach English so she learned as she went.

She enjoyed growing flowers, gardening, cooking and collecting recipes of all kinds of foods. She had thousands of recipes dating back to the early 1900s with her favorite being homemade baked beans. In her younger years, she liked going dancing at the Terp Ballroom. She was a lover of polka music and she played the accordion and the harmonica.

Survivors include two sons, Floyd and Eleanor Shuck, of Lime Springs, Robert and Janice Shuck, of Albert Lea, Minn.; a daughter, Anna and Randy Potter, of Havana, Ark.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lloyd Shuck; her second husband, Floyd Shane; her parents; grandson, Terry Shuck; three brothers, Joseph, Lawrence, and Albert Wendel; five sisters, Mary Eve Wendel, Katherine Wendel, Marie Wendel, Lizzie Wendel, and Anne Katherine Wendel.

A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Mayer Funeral Home in Austin, Minn. with a 6:30 p.m. wake service. There will be additional visitation one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Casket bearers will be Richard VandeWeerd, Michael VandeWeerd, Jason VandeWeerd, Charles Shuck, Susan Shuck and Kenneth Shuck.
