SISTER MARY JOHNITA SCHISSEL

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - Sister Mary Johnita Schissel, 82, a Sister of Mercy and nurse for 57 years, died April 26, 2001, at McAuley Retirement Center, Farmington Hills, following a short illness.

Born Helen Rose Schissel, daughter of Joseph and Rose (Staver) Schissel, of Cherokee, Iowa, the young Helen, dreamed of becoming a Navy nurse. She attended a year of college in Cherokee, then joined her older sister, Louise, in nurses training at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Sioux City. When Louise joined the Sisters of Mercy, Helen again followed her sister. To her own surprise, at the age of 19 she, too, decided to enter the Mercy Community at Mt. St. Agnes, Dubuque. Upon completion of her novitiate, the newly professed Sr. Mary Johnita reentered nurses training at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Detroit, where she later worked as floor supervisor and became a registered nurse in 1948.

During these early years, Sister also earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing education from Mercy College of Detroit.

For close to 30 years, Sister served in various nursing capacities at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospitals in Fort Dodge, Mason City and Sioux City, and at those in Pontiac and Ann Arbor, Mich. She also worked at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital, Detroit; St. Lawrence, Lansing, Mich.; St. Mary's, Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Our Lady of Mercy, Dyer, Ind.

Her health becoming fragile, in 1975 Sister began working in McAuley Center, the Mercy retirement center in Dubuque. She also did staff nursing at the American Health Care Center, St. Mary's Unit, Dyersville, Iowa, and just before her retirement to McAuley Center in Farmington Hills, did volunteer services at Mercy Convent in Fort Scott, Kan.

Sister Johnita was a "nurse for all seasons," as a colleague put it. Energetic and vivacious, she appeared to relish her duties and was generous with her time and help. She was a natural care giver and faithfully tended her sister, Sister Mary Angelita, during her final illness.

Sister Johnita is survived by brothers, Robert of Whitewater, Wis., and James of Cherokee, Iowa.

A prayer service was held Friday, April 27, in the McAuley Center Chapel. The Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, April 28, in the chapel followed by burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the Mercy Retirement Fund, 29000 11 Mile Rd., Farmington Hills MI 48337-1405.
