MASON CITY - Dan L. Thomas, 67, of 829 13th St. S. E., died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at his home.

Private family services will be held at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Robert Towner of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Plymouth.

There will be no visitation. The body will be cremated.

Dan was born June 27, 1933, in Mason City, the son of Jack and Hazel (Whitney) Thomas. He served in the U.S. Army and was employed by Jacob B. Decker and Sons Packing Plant for many years.

Dan is survived by one son, Wesley Thomas and his wife, Trudy, of Lakewood, Colo.; and one daughter, Sheila Haag and her husband, Rodney, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Rena and Zachary Thomas, of Lakewood, Colo., and Jessica and Sabrina Haag, of Mason City; one brother, Neil Thomas, of Herscher, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

BOONE - Betty Jean Wagaman, 77, of 577 Q Ave., died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) at her home in Boone.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Schroeder-Walter Funeral Home, 503 Story St., Boone, with the Rev. Donald Stover officiating. Burial will be in Boone Memorial Gardens.

REV. WILLIAM H. GREEN

CHARLES CITY - Funeral services for the Rev. William H. Green, 80, of 1705 Owen St., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Nashua. Inurnment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Nashua at a later date.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the family residence, 1705 Owen St. in Charles City. Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First, Greene, is in charge of arrangements.

William Harker Green was born April 27, 1920, in Cedar Rapids, a son of Girth Gerald and Laura Linwood (Horton) Green, and died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) at his home in Charles City.

He was baptized April 16, 1922, and confirmed Dec. 23, 1934, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. He received his education in the public schools in Cedar Rapids graduating from Franklin High School in 1939. He learned the electrician's trade working with his father while attending college.

During World War II he worked at a civil defense plant in Cedar Rapids. He received his bachelor of arts degree in 1946 from Coe College in Cedar Rapids and his master of divinity degree in 1950 from Boston University School of Theology. In later years he furthered his education as a certified clinical pastor and certified social worker with post graduate work in sociology. He was ordained by the Iowa Methodist Conference on June 25, 1950, by Bishop Charles Brashares.

Pastor Bill first served at the Movile Federated Church; later served at Lake City; Central Methodist in Charles City; St. Timothy Methodist and Western Home Chaplain, both in Cedar Falls; Boxholm-Pilot Mound; and Rockford-Marble Rock. Following his retirement in 1985, he served as interim pastor at First Baptist in Charles City and Mason City, Wesley United Methodist in Mason City, Howardville Wesleyan Church, Christian Church in Charles City and Nora Springs, Emmanuael Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme, and visitation pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City.

The ministry was Pastor Bill's life. He witnessed his faith in the Lord Jesus wherever he went. His love of people through his compassion and concern shown them and his encouragement of the youth in their life's journey will never be forgotten. Throughout the years Bill left his mark as an electrician at the various churches he served and, following retirement, with the various work at home and for family and friends. He was a former member of the Masonic Lodge and Rotary Club.

He was previously married to Nonabelle Slick on June 22, 1947, in Cedar Rapids. On July 23, 1976, he was united in marriage to Marcille Ann Eick at the United Methodist Church in Cheyene, Wyo.

Those thankful for having shared Bill's life include his loving wife, Marcille, of Charles City; six daughters and their spouses, Deborah and Jeffrey Sabbath of Evergreen Park, Ill., Holly and Mike Porter of Cedar Falls, Rebecca Smith of Charles City, Mary and Doug Kampman of Rio Rancho, N.M., Joy and Randall Smoot of Pine River, Minn., and Beverly and Jack Peterson of Walcott; four sons and their spouses, Donald Green of Evergreen Park, Ill., David and Imelda Green of Ireland, Floyd and Carmen Smith of Greene, Stewart and Tammy Smith of Virginia Beach, Va.; 17 grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Geneva and her husband, Stanley Weiss, and Kathy Eick, both of Plainfield; one brother-in-law, Eugene and his wife, Sharon Eick, of Tripoli.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Geraldine Lamont; two brothers, Paul and Harry Green; and a brother-in-law, Virgil Eick.

CHARLES CITY - Don O. Sherwood, 77, of 608 Eighth Ave., died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Dianne Christopher and the Rev. Diane Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens south of Charles City. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

HUGHBERT EUGENE TIPTON

ESCONDIDO, Calif. - Hughbert Eugene Tipton, of Escondido, Calif., formerly of Nora Springs, Iowa died Monday (Sept. 11, 2000) of chronic emphysema asbestos fibrosis in Escondido.

He was born on June 8, 1918 in Denver, Colo. Hugh was married to Charlotte (Hartwell) Tipton.

He was the town marshal for Nora Springs in the early 1960s. Hugh also worked for the Nora Springs Creamery and the Oliver Corporation in Charles City.

In 1965 Charlotte and Hugh moved to the San Diego, Calif., area, where he worked for the City of San Diego until his retirement in the early 1980s.

His son, Ron Tipton, of Byron, Minn. preceded him in death in 1998.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Charlotte (Hartwell) Tipton; one brother, Hal Lenox, of Duluth, Minn.; three sons, Raymond Tipton, of Minneapolis, Minn., Dennis Murphy, of Escondido, Calif. and Ronnie Murphy, of Prescott, Ariz.; and one daughter, Cheri Zieman, of Rochester, Minn.

Memorial services were held Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Escondido, Calif. Any memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

NORTHWOOD - Olga A. Hulshizer, 96, of Northwood, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood.

Olga A. Hulshizer was born on Feb. 2, 1904, in Carpenter, to Ole and Petronella (Johnson) Gordon.

She married Lawrence Hulshizer on March 5, 1924. They farmed in the Deer Creek area until retiring to Northwood in 1973. She was a member of the Deer Creek Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crocheting, her flowers and her grandchildren.

Survivors include one son, James and his wife, Mavis, of Blaine, Minn.; one sister, Odella and her husband, Charles Vosburgh, of Mason City; two brothers, Clarence Lynn Gordon, of Carpenter and Norman Gordon, of Ill.; two sisters, Gladys Hulshizer, of Northwood and Olive Purdy, of Alden, Minn.; six grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 17 great-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, four brothers, Anton, Nels, Art and Roy, five sisters, Alma, Nora, Ruth, Alice and Clarice, a grandson, Steve and his wife, Karen; two daughters-in-law, Madeline and Mary.

BELMOND - Carol Palm, 97, of Belmond, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belmond, with the Rev. Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be in North Prairie Cemetery, Scarville.

Carol (Solmonson) Palm, the daughter of Solmon and Serene (Martinson) Solmonson was born Aug. 5, 1903, at Lake Mills. She was baptized and confirmed at the North Prairie Lutheran Church near Scarville. She attended Waldorf College and began a teaching career.

She was united in marriage to Harry Palm on Aug. 13, 1939, at the North Prairie Lutheran Church, near Scarville. Their teaching career took them several places in Iowa and they retired to Belmond, coming from Lake City in 1976.

She was very artistic and loved music, she learned to play the pump organ, made many quilts, knitted sweaters for the church to send overseas, did many pencil sketches, and was an avid bird watcher and was a very devoted, wife, mother and grandmother. In failing health she entered the Belmond Health Care Center.

Those thankful for sharing her life include her two sons, Michael Palm and his wife, Jan, of Spencer, and Warren Palm and his wife, Bunny Seymour, of Decorah; grandchildren, Kari Roskens, Lisa Palm and Julie Palm; three great-grandchildren, Kalei, Brandt and Alec Roskens; sisters, Cathryn Gullixson of Minneapolis, Minn., Evelyn Matson of Amery, Wisc.; brothers, John Solmonson of Lake Mills, and Milford Solmonson of Amery, Wisc.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harry, in 1999, brothers, Helmer, Emelt, Archie, and sister, Isabel.

Howard Allen Schroeder was born on July 3, 1930, one of triplet sons to Herman and Ella (Hilmer) Schroeder at the family home at 401 South Main Street in Greene, and died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at his home in Greene. He was baptized July 5, 1930, and confirmed on March 25, 1945, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Greene. He received his education from the Greene Public Schools, graduating in 1949.

He first started working as a farm hand for Bill Kline and worked part time for Pooley Lumber Company. He entered the United States Navy on Jan. 16, 1951, being stationed in San Francisco as a cook. Following his honorable discharge Nov. 26, 1954, he returned to Greene, where he worked for Arvid Lindell and later Ed Shearer as a farm hand. In 1955 he became employed for the Greene Limestone Company.

He was previously married to Melva Rae Schuknecht on Nov. 16, 1955. He was last employed by the Oliver-White Farm Equipment Company from 1959 to 1985.

On May 10, 1961, he was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Salge Truex at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Vilmar. His interests included going on family camping trips and fishing trips to Minnesota. He enjoyed cooking for his family and playing games with the grandchildren.

Those thankful for having shared Howard's life include his loving wife, Shirley of Greene; his three children, Jerry of Greene, Jan Miller of Mason City and Allen and his wife, Olene, of Greene; two grandchildren, Abby Miller and Elizabeth Schroeder; two sisters and their spouses, Rowena and Glen Swedlund of Portland, Ore., Verna and Archie Brott of Benson, Minn.; three brothers and their spouses, Carroll (a resident of the Chautauqua Guest Home, Charles City) and Lavone of Greene, Roy and Trudee of Saratoga, Wyo., and Robert and Marilyn of Washburn; two sisters-in-law, Doreen Schroeder of Greene, Darlene and her husband, Bill Bohlen, of Allison; and a brother-in-law, Don Salge of Newberryport, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Dwight, Earl and Dale Schroeder.

MASON CITY -Lorraine Huntley, 75, of 1037 19th St. S.W., Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 22, 2000) at the I.O.O.F. Home.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the I.O.O.F. Home, 1037 19th St. S.W., with the Rev. Kathy Graves, chaplain of Hospice of North Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Lorraine Huntley was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Rochester, Minn., the daughter of Clifford and Alaran Mae Welborn. She attended schools in the Rochester area.

She was married on Sept. 30, 1950, to Lester Huntley during a ceremony in Rochester. She had been a resident of the I.O.O.F. Home since 1993. While living there she enjoyed dancing and socializing with her friends.

She is survived by one brother, Trent Welborn of Rochester; one sister, Marvel Kish of Missouri; and the loving staff and friends at I.O.O.F. Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brothers, Richard and Loren.

BRITT -Sylvester A. Zrostlik, 78, died Friday (Sept. 22, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.
