CHARLES CITY - Amy C. (Mrs. Earl) "Pat" Schmidt, 94, formerly of 506 Second Ave., died Sunday (Sept. 3, 2000) at the Riverside Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St., with the Rev. Gale Richards of the Colwell United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Thursday.

CLAIR C. PETERSON

BRITT - Clair C. Peterson, 84, died Monday (Sept. 4, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt with the Rev. Clyde Kieschnick officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Britt, with full military rites under the direction of the Britt Ceremonial Unit.

There will be no visitation. Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt is in charge of arrangements.

BUFFALO CENTER - Dr. Jay Rush, 77, of Buffalo Center, died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center with the Rev. Lois Abel officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

FLORENCE A. SMITH

MASON CITY - Florence A. Smith, 66, of 304 Third St. N.E., died Sunday (Sept. 3, 2000) at the USA Healthcare Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., in Manly, with burial at the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to the Florence A. Smith Memorial Fund at 219 14th St. S.E., Mason City, Iowa 50401.

Florence was born on Aug. 16, 1934, in Manly, the daughter of Charles H. and Charlotte "Lottie" (Julyan) Lucas. She grew up in Manly and received her education in Manly schools.

She worked as a waitress in Mason City before her marriage to Calvin J. Smith in August of 1955. The couple moved to Mason City where Florence worked in housekeeping at the I.O.O.F. Home for more than 19 years.

Florence was a former member of the Mason City Eagles No. 3416 and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

She enjoyed many activities with her family, especially playing cards.

Florence is survived by her eight children and their spouses, Calvin and Kristi Smith of Tomball, Texas, Bruce and Myrna Smith of Mason City, Cheryl and Chuck Asche of Mason City, Charlotte and Robert Rock of Mason City, Walter and Molly Smith and family of Montgomery, Texas, Samuel Smith of Melbourne, Fla., Patrick and Jackie Smith of Mason City and Denell and Philip Collins of Mason City; 16 grandchildren, Josh and Tara Smith, Lisa and Justin Smith, Derek Smith and his wife, Jessica, Emily, Benjamin, Angela, and Christa Asche, Amber, Aaron, and Cody Rock, Nicole, Staci, and Lindsey Smith and Miranda Collins; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Leonard Lucas and his wife, Marge, of Buffalo, Wis., and Stanley Lucas and his wife, Beverly, of Kensett; two sisters, Louetta Rasmussen of Mason City and Ruth Herbert of Plymouth, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Calvin, in April of 2000; four brothers, Howard, Charles, Robert and Richard Lucas; and two sisters, Joyce Anderson and Phyllis Larson.

STEVE B. HARLAN

MASON CITY - Steve B. Harlan, 16, of 157 Parkridge Ave., died Saturday (Sept. 2, 2000).

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. John "Jack" Gannett, the Rev. Samuel Hamilton-Poore and the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorial contributions may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church Youth Board.

Steve was born Oct. 15, 1983, in Mason City, the son of Dr. Bruce and Debra (Dodge) Harlan. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and attended the National Youth Gathering this past summer in St. Louis, Mo.

Steve attended Mason City High School where he played junior varsity hockey, wearing jersey number 66. He participated in hockey for 11 years, as well as golf and band.

Steve worked as a check-out boy at Hy-Vee East, enjoyed playing Nintendo, video movies, the computer and walking his dog.

Steve loved to laugh and had a kind heart.

Steve is survived by his parents, Dr. Bruce and Debra Harlan of Mason City; two brothers, Eric and Thomas, who are attending the University of Northern Iowa; maternal grandparents, Wayne and Sharon Dodge of Mason City; paternal grandparents, Dr. Peter and Evelyn Harlan Wierenga of Charlottesville, Va.; maternal great-grandmother, Letha Dodge of Rockwell; aunts and uncles, Brenda and Mark Rasmuson of Swaledale, Lorie Shipe of Charlottesville, Va., and Julie and Don Soechting of Charlottesville, Va.; and cousins Matt and Lori Rasmuson, Maggie Shipe and Marta and Mark Soechting.

ALBINA R. PROHASKA

GARNER - Albina R. Prohaska, 90, of Garner, died Monday (Sept. 4, 2000) at the Concord Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with the Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner, with a combined Rosary Society and Catholic Workmans Lodge rosary at 5 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Albina Rose Prohaska, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Urich) Rayhons, was born April 9, 1910, in Garfield Township in Hancock County. She attended Garfield No. 5 School through the eighth grade.

She did housekeeping for several people before her marriage to Lloyd Prohaska on Nov. 25, 1930, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan. They farmed south of Duncan, near Ventura and then moved to a farm south of Duncan in 1940 where she lived until moving to Garner in 1970. She moved to Concord Care Center in April of 1993.

She enjoyed gardening, especially her flowers, quilting and crocheting. Her children and grandchildren were her joy in life and her faith was important to her.

She was a life member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Rosary Society and the Catholic Workmans Lodge.

She is survived by her five children, Duane Prohaska of McCook, Neb., Mary Lou Tusha and her husband, George, of Garner, Verne Prohaska and his wife, Sally, of Garner, Bonnie Bacon and her special friend, Keith Christiansen, of Ventura, and Carolyn Buseman of West Des Moines; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Rose Kopacek and her husband, Vincent, of Britt; a brother-in-law, Julius Knop, of Garner; a sister-in-law, Agnes Rayhons, of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, on Nov. 17, 1966; a daughter, Betty Jane Prohaska, in 1944; two sons-in-law, Raymond Formanek in 1991 and Larry Bacon in 1993; parents; and six brothers and sisters, John Rayhons, Frank Rayhons, Mary Chizek, Emma Knop, Caroline Prohaska and Henry Rayhons.

EDITH L. SIGLIN

CORALVILLE - Edith L. Siglin, 89, of Lantern Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Coralville, died Thursday (Aug. 31, 2000) following a long illness.

A private graveside service will be held in Mason City at a later date. Mrs. Siglin's body will be cremated.

Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the First Baptist Church, 125 E. State St., Mason City, Iowa 50401.

Mrs. Siglin was born on March 5, 1911, in Pocahontas to Harvey and Sarah A. Love Vaux. She married Nord R. Siglin on Dec. 6, 1930. She lived most of her life in Mason City.

She was the manager of the Armour-Niad Manufacturers Employee Credit Union until her retirement in 1973.

The Siglins retired to Weslaco, Texas, where they lived until moving back to Iowa City in 1993.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Siglin is survived by one son, Verlyn V. Siglin and his wife, Diane, of Iowa City; two grandsons, Stephen N. Siglin and his wife, Belinda, of Iowa City, and Douglas V. Siglin and his wife, Kristin, of Washington D.C.; three great-grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew.

Her parents, one brother and three sisters preceded her in death.

DONALD LOWELL REEDER

NORTHWOOD - Donald Lowell Reeder, 76, died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 2000) at his home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Northwood with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood with military graveside honors by "Our Buddies'' VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 of Northwood.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service time at the church today. Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood is a charge of the arrangements.

The family of Donald Lowell Reeder has requested that memorial contributions be made in his memory.

Donald Lowell Reeder was born on Oct. 14, 1923, in Glenville, Minn., the son of Harry and Ella (Nelson) Reeder. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith on June 5, 1927, in the Round Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Glenville, Minn., and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation on April 18, 1937, at Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood.

He received his education in the Northwood School system, graduating from Northwood High School in May 29, 1941. He was inducted into the U. S. Navy on Sept. 30, 1942, in Minneapolis, Minn., and served his country honorably in the South Pacific during World War II until his honorable discharge on March 14, 1945, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Donald spent his entire life around Northwood except for his time in the Navy. He farmed for many years in the Hartland Township area rural Northwood.

On Dec. 23, 1945, he married Louise Larson of Northwood in the Elk Creek Lutheran Church, rural Kensett. On Sept. 10, 1983, he was united in marriage in Hazel Mooney of Northwood.

He enjoyed working on the farm, cooking, reading, playing the guitar and fishing, but his great love and enjoyment was visiting with his family, grandchildren and his many friends.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779, Northern Light Masonic Lodge No. 266, all in Northwood, and the American Legion Post in Glenville.

Left to cherish his memory is daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Hickman and her husband, Robert (Buck) of Northwood; a stepdaughter, Sharron Krafka and her husband, Dean, of Northwood; four grandchildren, Jody Moretz and her husband, Pat, of Hanlontown, Tammy Bird and her husband, Rick, of Mason City, Dayna Hickman of Mason City and Jonathan Hickman of Mankato, Minn.; two step-grandchildren, Michelle and Ranae Krafka of Northwood; five great-grandchildren, Brad and Ryan Moretz, Chelsie, Mandie and Shelby Bird; two step-great-grandchildren, Grace and Ryan; three brothers, Harry Reeder and his wife, Arlys, of Northwood, Chuck Reeder and his wife, Lovone, of Northwood, and Larry Reeder and his wife, Joyce, of Glenville, Minn.; several nieces and nephews; a special neighbor, Sandra Nowlin of Northwood; and other relatives and many friends.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel Mooney in 1984; a brother, Robert Reeder; and an infant sister, Marion Reeder.

WINNIFRED A. MESSERSCHMIDT

SHEFFIELD - Winnifred Alice Messerchmidt, 93, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2000) at Sheffield Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. Remigio P. Panlaqui officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield.

Winnifred Alice Messerschmidt was born on June 23, 1907, on a farm near Mt. Sterling, Ill., to Clarence and Ida Mae (McPhail) Campbell. When she was 8 years old, her family moved into Mt. Sterling where she attended grade and high school. Winnifred graduated from high school in 1925 then worked for railroads in Chicago for 17 years.

Following her marriage to William Messerschmidt in 1946, the couple settled in Sheffield, then moved to North Dakota for three years. They moved to Knoxville, Ill., in 1953 and were there until April of 1962 when William retired.

They returned to Sheffield in September of that year. William's health failed and he died on May 1, 1968. In May, 1990, Winnifred moved to Spring Bay, Ill., then moved back to Sheffield in September, 1991, and entered the Sheffield Care Center.

Winnifred was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sheffield, the Knoxville Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, Chapter No. 880, P.E.O., and the Philharmonic Club in Sheffield.

Survivors include her sister, Gladys Davis of Morton, Ill., as well as several nieces and nephews.

Winnifred was preceded in death by her parents; her husband ; one sister, Mary Florence; and one brother, Harry L. Campbell.

GLADYS E. LOVICK

FOREST CITY - Gladys E. Lovick, 76, died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 2000) at her home in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Forest City, with the Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St., Forest City.

Gladys E. Lovick was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Plymouth to Fred and Grace (White) Fluhrer. She attended country school and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1942. Following graduation she attended college in Cedar Falls and received her teaching certificate. She taught country school for two years before moving to Mason City where she worked at Russell Studio. She enjoyed photography and especially enjoyed touring the state while taking graduation pictures at high schools.

On Nov. 20, 1949, she married Paul Lovick at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. They farmed near Joice and Ventura before settling on the home place near Forest City in 1956. Gladys also worked at furniture stores in Forest City and Clear Lake.

Gladys enjoyed travel. During their marriage they had many wonderful trips and made many wonderful friends. They enjoyed their time spent on the Hawaiian Islands and the Caribbean cruises. They especially enjoyed the family vacations, many of which were fishing trips.

Gladys was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City and was active in the wedding circle. She volunteered much time to school activities and led a fund drive for new band uniforms. Gladys was also an avid fan at the Forest City High School softball and basketball games and rarely missed a game.

Gladys is survived by two children, Dennis Lovick and Barb Lovick, both of Forest City; one sister, Gail Netzer and her husband, Ambrose, of Bismarck, N.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Memorials may be given to the Immanuel Lutheran Church Radio Fund.


PEARL J. ALDINGER

WATERLOO - Pearl J. Aldinger, 94, formerly of Clarion, died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 2000) at Rosewood Estates, Waterloo.

Memorial Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Belmond. Inurnment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.

There will be no visitation. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service in Waterloo is in charge of arrangements.

Pearl was born March 16, 1906, in rural Wright County, daughter of Simon A. and Carrie Steenblock Bohning. She married Charles H. Aldinger on June 9, 1927, in Clarion. He died Feb. 17, 1977.

She is survived by two sons, Jack of Independence, and Karl of Stevens Point, Wis.; a daughter, Audrey Wright of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pearl was preceded in death by six brothers, Pete, Ed, Sam, Paul, Andrew and David Bohning; and two sisters, Martha and Gail Bohning.

THOMAS ROTHS JR.

GARNER - Thomas Roths Jr., 74, of Garner, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner, with Pastor Roger Kallem officiating. Inurnment will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner, with a flag presentation ceremony by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday.

Thomas Francis Roths Jr., the son of Thomas Francis Sr. and Leoda Elizabeth (Smith) Roths, was born July 17, 1926, on a farm near Klemme. He attended school at Klemme and then worked in a shipyard in Vancouver, Wash.

He served his country in the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II. After his discharge, he worked at several different jobs until he took over the management of the Roth's Café in Klemme. He also worked for E.G. Greiman Construction, LaHarve Construction in Forest City and Yohn Ready Mix Concrete Co. in Garner.

He had served as a volunteer fireman in Klemme for many years. Junior enjoyed traveling, driving his truck and visiting with people. He was a lifetime member of the Garner V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Garner; five children, Elizabeth I. Roths, Karen M. Roths, Thomas J. Roths and his wife, Candice, Sara A. Roths, and Michelle K. Roths; four stepchildren, Rodney T. Spieker and his wife, Cheryl, Jaclyn A. Liska and her husband, Jim, David Spieker and his wife, Michelle and Scott Spieker and his wife, Lisa; five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and a brother, Robert L. Roths and his wife, Helen, of Garner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a step-granddaughter, Vanessa Spieker.

VERA CRAWFORD

MASON CITY - Vera Crawford, 80, formerly of Mason City, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2000) at the Country Side Estates in Cherokee after an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Ron Stein of the First Baptist Church in Mason City officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel.

Vera was born on June 6, 1920, in Clare, the daughter of Thomas and Laura (Boles) Richardson. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1937.

On Feb. 22, 1936, she was united in marriage to Ralph Crawford in Mason City. She worked at Zanios Produce for several years and also for James Grocery.

She and her husband were active members of the VFW Post 763 for many years.

She enjoyed crocheting and gardening. Her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren.

Vera is survived by two daughters, Diana Ockerman and her husband, Richard, of Cherokee, and Ann Hopp and her husband, Marv, of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Jennifer Ockerman, Douglas Ockerman, David Hopp and his wife, Rejeanna, Kelly Hopp and Kevin Hopp; two great-grandchildren, Avery Hopp and Dylan Ockerman; and one brother, Charles Richardson and his wife, Janet, of Mason City.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph, in 1980; and one brother, Thomas Richardson.

CECELIA BOLIDA LOBERG

NORTHWOOD - Cecelia Bolida Loberg, 88, of Northwood, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2000) at the Lutheran Retirement Home in Northwood.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church in rural Northwood, with the Rev. Steven Smith officiating. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery in rural Northwood.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 S. in Northwood.

Cecelia Bolida Loberg was born on July 27, 1912, in Bristol Township, Worth County, to Lewis and Helen (Tollefson) Hove. She was baptized by Pastor J.W. Ylvisaker. She was confirmed at Northwood Lutheran Congregation in May of 1927 by Pastor J.W. Ylvisaker.

She attended Northwood schools, graduating from high school in 1931. In high school, she was very active in drama, music and cheerleading. She also took normal training while in high school. She taught country school for six years in Hartland Township.

She married Elmer Loberg on Dec. 26, 1935, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She and Elmer lived and farmed his home place until his death in 1971, where she continued to live until 1987. She then moved to Northwood. She worked at Fallgatters for 20 plus years.

She was a very active member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church for 60 years, where she taught Sunday school and was active in the circle and ladies aid.

She enjoyed family, visiting with friends and relatives, playing cards and games, quilting and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Tom, Rueben and Julius; and one sister, Hilda.

Cecelia is survived by one son, Enos Loberg, of Northwood; three daughters, Beverly and her husband, Lyle Wignes, of Forest City, Barbara and her husband, Dan Edmonds, of Manly, and Bonita and her husband, Steve Pechtal, of Plymouth, Minn.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

LUCAN, Minn. - Marcella E. Walling, 67, of Lucan, Minn., formerly of Osage, died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2000) at her home in Lucan.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lucan.

A second memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Jeff Engholm officiating. Burial will be Tuesday in the Orchard Cemetery in Orchard.

Marcella Elaine Walling was born Dec. 10, 1932, to Jacob and Amelia (Schwab) Schleuger at Britt. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith at 10 a.m. on May 3, 1933, at the Woden Lutheran Church in Woden. Her godparents were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tanner. She was confirmed on June 9, 1946, at the Britt Lutheran Church in Britt.

Marcella Schleuger was married to Darrold Walling on June 12, 1965, at Osage. The couple farmed near Orchard before moving to Lincoln, Neb., in 1985, where Marce worked as a nurse and Darrold worked for the telephone company. Marce served for more than 44 years in the nursing profession in Iowa and Nebraska.

In 1993, they moved to Lucan, Minn., to be closer to their son, Lon, and to help on the farm. They became members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lucan, where Marce had served as the president of the W.E.L.C.A. In 1999 she was diagnosed with lung cancer, which she battled with a constant smile and her strong faith.

On Sept. 7, 2000, Marcella Elaine Welling died at her home in Lucan, at the age of 67 years, eight months and 27 days.

Marce is survived by her husband, Darrold; two sons, Kenyon and his wife, Marylin, of Kennebec, S.D., and Lon and his wife, Jean Walling, of Milroy, Minn.; two daughters, Sheila and husband, Marty Couchman, of Lawrence, Kan. and Darla and husband, Jack Goodale, of Stacyville; and adopted daughter, Mary and husband, Jim Spitz, of Osage; six grandsons, Erik Goodale, Aaron Walling, Lucas Walling, Tom Walling, Robby Plummer and Kevin Plummer; five granddaughters, Nikki May, Alison Walling, April Goodale, Abby Goodale and Kendra Walling; two adopted grandsons, Garret and Wyant Spitz; and one great-granddaughter, Corey May; one sister, Dorothy Sprau, of Nora Springs; one sister-in-law, Clarice Schleuger, of Britt; and one nephew, Dean Schleuger, of Luverne; in addition to many friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ludwig and Katarina Schleuger and Frederick and Elizabeth Schwab; her parents, Jacob and Amelia Schleuger; one son, Dan Garret Walling; one brother, Donald Schleuger; a niece, Diana Schleuger; in addition to many aunts, uncles and cousins.

NORA SPRINGS - Lucy I. Jacobsen, 103, of Nora Springs, died Friday (Sept. 8, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Ruth Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye St. in Nora Springs, and will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.

Lucy Isabel Jacobsen was born Nov. 15, 1897, in Waterloo, the daughter of Jesse and Amellia (Adams) Harden. She married Nels Jacobsen on Dec. 29, 1915.

Lucy grew up in the Nora Springs area and attended Rock Grove School. She and her husband farmed in the Nora Springs area until 1961, when they moved into Nora Springs.

Lucy enjoyed crocheting, making quilts, raising flowers, playing cards and traveling. She especially loved spending time with her family.

She was a member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church and the Rebecca Lodge.

She is survived by one son, Harley Jacobsen and his wife, Rosie, of Osage; one daughter-in-law, Donna Jacobsen, of Nora Springs; one sister, Mae Quinby, of Port St. Joe, Fla.; 21 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 30 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Karen Vikturek; one son, Harold "Bud" Jacobsen; two great-grandsons, Devon Craig and Chris Field; a grandson, Gerald Vikturek; one brother, Roy Harden; and one sister, Nora Richter.

KANAWHA - Doris Alma Hansen, 92, of Kanawha passed away Friday (Sept. 8, 2000) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital, Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church, Kanawha, with the Rev. Susan Detwiler officiating. Interment will be in Amsterdam Cemetery near Kanawha.

Doris Alma Schaefer, the daughter of Christian and Emelia Lembgen Schaefer, was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, 1907, near Klemme. She was raised on a farm near Klemme and attended country schools at Liberty #8. She stayed home from school to help care for her mother during her prolonged illness. Following her mother's death, she continued to care for the family home. After a two-year delay in finishing her education she attended Klemme High School one year then graduated from Marble Rock High School. She worked out as a hired girl until her marriage.

She was united in marriage to Robert E. Hansen on Feb. 8, 1933, in Marble Rock. After marriage she was busy with her family, gardening and sewing. She helped with chores during the busy farm seasons and canned all the vegetables, fruits, pickles and jams the family consumed, which were mostly raised in a large garden. As the grandchildren arrived she has helped lighten the load of each of her children's households for one or two weeks.

She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church where she was an active member. She enjoyed traveling to visit her children, who have at times been very widely scattered across this nation and Japan.

She is survived by five children, Dwayne Hansen and his wife, Darlene, of Kanawha, Norman Hansen and his wife, Helena, of Orange, Calif., Joy Taylor and her husband, John, of Culver City, Calif., Harlan Hansen and his wife, Virginia, of Rutland, and Ronald Hansen and his wife, Marjorie, of Kanawha; 14 grandchildren, Deborah Smith and her husband, Dan, Daniel Hansen and his wife, Diane, Kenneth Hansen, Norene Gill and her husband, Gregg, Michael Hansen, Christelle Docter and her husband, David, Charles Thorburn and his wife, Susan, Douglas Taylor, Rozanne Gross and her husband, Jeffrey, Renee Jackson and her husband, Scott, Rebecca Leavitt and her husband, Tom, Nedra Horstman and her husband, Michael, Brenda Smith and her husband, Michael, and Melinda Clark and her husband, Christopher; 25 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Swant of Mason City; one brother-in-law, Floyd Wilson of Rockwell; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert, in 1966, two brothers, Emery Schaefer and Alvin Schaefer, one sister, Hilda Wilson, and a son-in-law, Charles Thorburn.
