Lawrence Anthony Freund

MEYER - Lawrence Anthony Freund, 91, of Meyer, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Meyer.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in St. Ansgar is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence was born on April 16, 1909 in Meyer, the son of John and Mary (Ginsterblum) Freund. He married Christina Adams. He was a dedicated farmer, was a K of C member and also a member of the ENGNE Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Freund; and one sister, Katherine Brandel.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Christina, of Meyer; one son, Larry, of Meyer; six daughters, Ann Marie and her husband, Jim Rezabek, of Osage, Alice and her husband, Jim Wright, of Waterloo, Dorothy and her husband, Chuck Waddell, of Chandler, Ariz., Virginia and her husband, Buddy Robbling, of Petersburg, Ind., Lorraine and her husband, Ken Tilton, of Mona, and Betty Neeley and her husband, Steve, of St. Ansgar; three brothers, Steve Freund, of Adams, Minn., Dr. O.J. Freund, of Denton, N.C., and Joe Freund, of Osage; one sister, Margaret Hanson, of Rochester, Minn.; 25 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Carlos A. Melendez

MASON CITY - Carlos A. Melendez, 81, of 1518 N. Washington Ave., died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at the MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Ill.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. St. S.E. in Mason City.

Louise M. Appelquist

MASON CITY - Louise M. Appelquist, 80, of Mason City, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center in Mason City.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly officiating. Inurnment will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood.

Friends may call one hour prior to services on Sunday at the chapel.

According to her wishes, her body was cremated.

Louise M. Appelquist was born on Jan. 23, 1920, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Morton and Emma (Soens) Murphy. She attended and received her education in the Emmetsburg School system, graduating from Emmetsburg Catholic High School.

She was united in marriage to Harold J. Appelquist on March 23, 1940. He preceded her in death in 1962. After their marriage, they moved to Northwood and owned and operated Appelquist Grocery Store in Northwood until her husband's death.

After the death of her husband, she lived and worked in Mason City and had spent the last 18 years of her life at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center in Mason City.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory are four children, Judy DiMarco and her husband, Gus, of Clear Lake, Jeanne Loberg and her husband, Bill, of Northwood, Jackie Larsen and her husband, Larris, of Chicago, Ill., and David Appelquist, of Northwood; six grandchildren; three sisters, Cecelia Girres, of Mallard, Carol Schuller and her husband, Mark, of Mallard, and Jeanette Barber and her husband, Rich, of Ruthven; two brothers, Jack Murphy and his wife, Ann, of San Diego, Calif. and M. B. "Turk" Murphy and his wife, Alyce, of Freeport, Ill.; as well as other relatives and friends.

Her parents; husband, Harold J. Appelquist in 1962; a grandson, Ben Loberg in 1987; and a brother, Francis Murphy, preceded her in death.

Charles James Hill

MASON CITY - Funeral services for Charles James Hill of Spencer were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, with the Rev. Paul Hansen officiating. Interment was at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Mr. Hill passed away on Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 87.

Charles James Hill, the son of John and Elizabeth Wepking Hill, was born Feb. 8, 1913, in Mason City, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Mason City area, where he graduated from Mason City High School and attended Mason City Junior College.

Charles married Ruth Margaret Ewers on Nov. 15, 1941, in Albert Lea, Minn. Following their marriage, the couple lived briefly in Minneapolis, Minn. and then Mason City before settling in Spencer in 1948.

Charles was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad for over 35 years, primarily as a signal maintainer in the Spencer area and retired in 1975.

He was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, Evening Shade Lodge No. 312 A.F. & A.M. He had also served on the Spencer City Council.

Charles held a lifelong interest in electronics and enjoyed ham radio. He also enjoyed traveling with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; one son, James Hill, of Richmond, Ill.; one daughter and her husband, Linda and Bruce Conway, of Mahomet, Ill.; one grandson, Charles Conway, living at home; two brothers, Gordon Hill, of Tucson, Ariz., and Byron Hill and his wife, Georgiana, of Mason City; two sisters, Lois Ellett, of Sanborn, Iowa and Frances Nutton and her husband, Jack, of Mason City; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Paul Pippert, 75, of Overland Park, Kan., died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at St. Joseph's Health Center in Overland Park, Kan.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday at the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, Kan.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs.

Keith Lemme

BRITT - Keith Lemme, 72, of Britt, died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the St. John's Lutheran Church in Woden, with the Rev. Arlen Lloyd officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery in rural Woden.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City.

Keith D. Lemme was born in Forest City on Sept. 11, 1928, the son of Daniel and Elma (Hanna) Lemme. He was baptized and confirmed at Grant Lutheran Church He attended rural school near his home and graduated from Thompson High School in 1945, later serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

He married Rita Rasmussen at Grant Lutheran Church on March 7, 1954. The couple had lived and farmed in the same area for their entire married lives.

Keith retired from farming in 1993 and the couple moved to Britt in 1996. They enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, Ariz.

Keith enjoyed playing golf and loved to attend his grandchildren's ball games. Even though retired, he still enjoyed helping out on the farm when he was asked.

He spent time reading and watching TV, especially sporting events and the History Channel.

He was a lifelong member of Grant Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion Post in Thompson.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, of Britt; a son, Kurt Lemme, of Edwards, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Julie and Brad Tharp, of Webster City; and their children, Meredith Ann and Matthew Bradley; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and John Engels, of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two infant daughters, Diane Kay and Jane Marie.

TITONKA - Henry F. Baade, 101, died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at Titonka Care Center.

ELVIN E. GERBER

MASON CITY - Elvin E. Gerber, 80, of 710 N. Carolina, died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at the I.O.O.F. Home, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Elvin Edward "Hans" Gerber was born Jan. 25, 1920, at Kendalville to Edward and Marie (Benson) Gerber. He attended schools in Cresco.

He came to Mason City in the fall of 1948. He worked at the Kuppinger Construction Co. 1950-51, where he learned much about the construction industry. From 1955-1980 he worked for the Andrews Concrete Company. He was the chief sandblaster and painter when the trucks were cleaned up in the winter.

He was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mason City. He rang the bell for many years and taught Sunday school there.

Elvin married V. Ruth Ferrier Campbell June 20, 1980, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Their honeymoon trip was to Europe. He especially enjoyed Switzerland. One day the snow caused the mountain highway to be so slippery that the bus driver and guide asked the passengers to walk down the mountain. While walking down the mountain, a woman passenger started to slip into a gushing stream and Elvin pulled her to safety.

He helped Ruth farm for about 15 years near Rockwell and Clear Lake. Seven years ago they moved to an acreage near Mason City. He enjoyed going to flea markets, gun shows and actions.

Living members of his family include his wife, V. Ruth Gerber, a son, Jan Gerber and his wife, Candace, Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Debra Marie; a sister, Dorothy Schnauss and her husband, Arnold, Cresco; a brother, Elmer Gerber and his wife, Delores, Decorah; three nieces; and several cousins.

PAUL PIPPERT

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -Paul Pippert, 75, formerly of Mason City, passed away Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at St. Joseph Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Ka. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Park Cemetery, Nora Springs, Iowa.

Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Sunday at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf, where Masonic Services will be at 5 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to Village Presbyterian Church, or Shriners Children's Hospital.

Paul was born July 3, 1925, in Talbert, Calif. He grew up in Mason City and attended Mason City Junior College and Tarkio Presbyterian College, Tarkio, Mo. He married Wava Withers, Jan. 21, 1951. He started his broadcasting career in Watertown, S.D., at KWAT. He was an Army veteran. After serving his country, he resumed his radio career in Mason City, then moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, and worked at radio station KMA.

He then moved to the Kansas City area in 1954 and started with KCMO, where he was employed for 25 years and served as their farm director. He continued his broadcasting career at KFRM in Wichita, Kansas, and then moved on to WIBW in Topeka, Kansas, where he worked for 10 years, retiring in 1990.

He was the former president of the MO-KAN chapter of the National Agri Marketing Association and former president of the Livestock Booster Club. He served on the executive committee of the Kansas City Future Farmers of America Advisory Council. He was a member of the Agri Business Advisory Council of Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of directors of the Agricultural Hall of Fame. He served on the board of governors of the American Royal Association.

He received several awards including an Oscar in agricultural radio in 1978. He was named National Farm Broadcaster of the Year in 1987. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Organization of Future Farmers of America, the Distinguished Service Award from the Kansas Farm Bureau, and the Distinguished Service Award from the Missouri Farm Bureau. He received the Kansas Grange Award, Kansas Electrical Corporation Appreciation Award, and Kansas Bankers' Association Award.

He was a member of Village Presbyterian Church, Old Mission Lodge #153 and the Scottish Rite, Abdallah Temple, the National Association of Farm Broadcasters, and Second Indianhead Infantry Division Association. During his career in farm broadcasting he traveled abroad to 35 countries and revisited several of those countries.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Wava; a daughter, Paulette Cott and son-in-law, Greg, Winston-Salem, N.C.; two grandsons, Steve Cott, Vermillion, S.D., and Jeff Cott, Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister, Marie Comstock, Wheaton, Ill.; two brothers, Wesley Pippert, Washington, D.C., Harold Pippert, Mason City; 19 nieces and nephews.

CARLOS A. MELENDEZ

MASON CITY - Carlos A. Melendez, 81, of 1518 N. Washington, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at the MacNeal Hospital, Berwyn, Ill.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Fullerton Funeral, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. At 7 p.m. a rosary will be recited followed by a scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church Tuesday.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to direct memorials to the Carlos Melendez Memorial Fund.

Carlos was born Jan. 1, 1919, the son of Mauro and Calixta (Avila) Torres in Gowan, Okla. In 1930 Carlos moved to Mason City where on Nov. 16, 1938, he was united in marriage to Josephine Jimenez.

On April 7, 1944, Carlos was inducted into the United States Army where he served his country until Dec. 15, 1944, when he was honorably discharged.

Upon returning from the service Carlos became employed as a body man at Pritchard Motor Co. He was later employed by Armour Packing followed by a brief time at Farmland in Iowa Falls.

Carlos could often be found restoring an old car or working in his garden. He enjoyed the outsoors and was especially fond of deep-sea fishing and pheasant hunting.

Carlos was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a life member of the VFW Post 733 and former member of the American Legion.

Those thankful for having shared in Carlos' life include his wife, Josephine of Mason City; two daughters, Rita and her husband, John Luther, of West Des Moines, and Christine Recker of Byron, Calif.; one son, Carlos Jr. and his wife, Carole Melendez, of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Lupe and her husband, Oscar Ortiz, Virginia and her husband, Elizar Lartique, and Gladina Mireless; two brothers, Magdaleno and his wife, Rita Torres, and John Torres, six grandchildren, Patrick, Kristy Terry, Lacey, John and Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Christina, Savannah and Julia.

Carlos was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Jesse and Domingo.

Heinrich Friedrich Baade was born on July 5, 1899, in Wellsburg to Dietrich and Minnie Nee Conrad Baade. Henry attended rural schools and was married to Gladys Carlson on Feb. 16, 1931, in Wesley. The couple farmed near Wesley and then south of Titonka. Henry retired and moved into Titonka in 1956.

Henry enjoyed farming, gardening and repairing lawnmowers and bicycles. His greatest love was his family and grandchildren.

Henry was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in Titonka.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys of the Titonka Care Center; daughter, Violet Korte of Woden; daughter-in-law, Janice Baade of Titonka, eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; son, Donald; son-in-law, Kenzy Korte; four sisters, Lizzie Senne, Reka Koch, Lottie Christ and Minnie Senne, and two brothers, Dick and William Baade.

ROCKWELL - Francine Mae (Pringle) Wolcott, 44, of 4322 Quail Ave., died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, following several years of recurring cancers.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St., S.E., Mason City, with the Rev Doug Anderson of First United Methodist Church officiating. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Francine was born on Feb. 4, 1956, the daughter of Wayne and Esther (Kellum) Pringle. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1974. During her high school years, she participated in vocal music and played the flute and the bassoon in the band. In 1976 Francine graduated from North Iowa Area Community College where she studied horticulture and law enforcement. She was also involved with the NIACC Singers.

Later she took great pleasure in her gardens and in the companionship of her many animals. Francine also enjoyed sewing but most of all the time she spent with her son, Chazz.

On April 28, 1988, Francine was united in marriage to Art Wolcott at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. Francine was a member of the First United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school.

Those thankful for having shared in Francine's life include her husband, Art, and son, Chazz Pringle Wolcott, of Rockwell; two aunts, Mae and her husband, Paul Cota, of Mason City, and Frances Kellum of Fort Wayne, Ind.; her mother and father-in-law, Jack and Edna Wolcott of Floyd; special cousins; and many friends.

MASON CITY - Paul Lewis, 83, of Shalom Tower 2, in Mason City, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, with the Rev. Mark Vander Tuig officiating. Burial will be in the New Oregon Cemetery in Cresco.

Paul was born on July 15, 1917, in Winneshiek County, the son of Tom and Frieda (Ratz) Lewis. He attended rural schools and worked on the farm.

On March 29, 1939, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Kack at New Hampton. They farmed first in the Cresco area and then moved to the Riceville and McIntire areas before retiring and moving to Charles City. They moved to Mason City five years ago.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Ruth Rink; and two brothers, Raymond and Bill.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Mason City; a daughter, Loretta Satern, of Mason City; and a brother, Gary Lewis, of Altoona; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold Lewis, of Greene; and four sisters, Opal Dotzler and June Urness, both of Winona, Minn., Mary Miller, of Lanesboro, Minn. and Bernetta Cummings, of LeRoy, Minn.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Brad Lindsey Bales, 39, of 2107 N. York, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at his home.

Memorial services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Good Shepherd Christian Church in Blue Springs, Mo.

He was a government investigator for the U.S.I.S. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Christian Church. He was a member of the Natural Athletic Strength Association.

He was an avid weightlifter. Brad had a tremendous faith in God and was a good father and husband.

Memorials may be given to an education fund for his daughters in care of the church.

CLEAR LAKE - Orville Earl Stinehart, 85, of 2501 W. State St., Mason City, originally of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Orville was born March 21, 1915, in rural Milford, the son of Jeddie and Margaret (Lambertus) Stinehart. He was baptized in April of 1915 in the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, and confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City in 1931. He attended school at Arnolds Park.

Orville married Dolores Schloemer on Aug. 4, 1940, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City. They lived in Northwood, where Orville worked at the John Deere Implement.

Orville and Dolores moved to Clear Lake, where he worked for the Cerro Gordo Implement in Mason City. He bought DeBryan-Pugh Implement in Clear Lake and operated as Stinehart Implement until his retirement in the fall of 1977. He farmed north of Clear Lake.

Orville and Dolores celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on Aug. 4, 2000. He loved to garden and grow popcorn and sell it to Farmers Co-op Elevators. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

Orville is survived by his wife, Dolores Stinehart, of Mason City; three children Nancy Holman and her husband Robert, of Clear Lake, Sally Johnson and her husband Mark, of Clear Lake, and Susan Stinehart; one brother, Alfred Stinehart and his wife, Opal, of Mason City; two sisters, June Stinehart, of Mason City, and Betty Schulte and her husband Bob, of West Des Moines; two brothers-in-law, Arnold Luker, of Mason City, and Gene Morische, of Nora Springs; five grandchildren, Jason Allen, Eddie Allen, Brian Allen, Robert Deckard and Jameson Deckard; seven stepgrandchildren, Tracy Griffin, Brian Holman, Robert Holman, Julie Brookman, Joshua Johnson, Jeremy Johnson and Jacob Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

VERLA MAY PENTICOFF

Today we pay tribute to Verla (Ritzman) Penticoff, who was born on July 14, 1926, in Butler County. She was the daughter of Vern Sr. and Flossie (Truax) Ritzman.

Verla was baptized on the 4th day of April, 1946.

Verla was raised on a farm south of Dumont. She attended Clutterville rural school in Madison Township for eight years and graduated from Dumont High School in 1946.

After graduation, during World War II, she worked in the hemp plant at Hampton. She also worked at the Marshall Canning Co. for several years and then at Davies Manufacturing Co. until she was married.

On Feb. 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Ray "Jack" Penticoff at the United Methodist Church in Troy, Kan. They celebrated their 53rd anniversary this millennium year.

To this union a daughter, Rita Mae, was born.

Verla joined the Hansell United Methodist Church on the 4th day of March 1953 and attended there until her health prevented her from doing so.

Verla and Jack farmed north of Hansell all their married life. Verla loved the outdoors, her flowers, gardening, mowing and helping out where needed. She enjoyed snowmobiling and motorcycling with friends in the area.

Verla was a great helpmate to her husband and a wonderful mother. She taught Sunday school for 13 years. She also taught Bible school and enjoyed helping with the Hansell United Methodist Church functions.

On Sunday the 17th day of September, 2000, Verla went to her heavenly home at the age of 74 years, two months and three days.

Verla is survived by her husband, Jack; their daughter, Rita, and son-in-law, Trent Gerdes; and two granddaughters, Melanie and Morgan, of Waterloo; two brothers, Vern Ritzman, of Hampton and Harold Ritzman, of Nashua; two sisters, Marlis Nielsen, of Hampton and Audrey Stemmerman, of Allison.

Her parents preceded her in death.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their acts of kindness, words of encouragement and the many prayers during her illness and death.

EVELYN HAVILAND

KANAWHA - Evelyn Haviland, 89, of Kanawha, passed away Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at the Kanawha Community Home in Kanawha.

Evelyn, the daughter of Charles and Catherine Taylor Gardener, was born Feb. 22, 1911, in Webster City. She later moved to the Blairsburg area.

Evelyn was united in marriage with Harold Haviland on Sept. 3, 1927, in Webster City. The couple farmed in the Blairsburg, Woolstock and Vincent areas, before moving to Kanawha in 1946.

Evelyn was employed for a number of years by various businesses in Kanawha. On Oct. 6, 1999, she became a resident of the Kanawha Community Home.

She was a member of the Kanawha Lutheran Church.

She is survived by one son, Gene and his wife, Bev, of San Diego, Calif.; one granddaughter and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Harold, on Feb. 6, 1997.

In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated. A private burial service will be held at a later date.

THORNTON - Jack R. Beale, 75, 706 Maple Place, Thornton, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Richland Lutheran Church, 300 Elm St., in Thornton, with the Rev. Jerome Gernander officiating.

Family will greet friends from 1:30 p.m. Thursday until time of the service at the church. The body is being cremated.

A private graveside service will be held at the Richland Lutheran Cemetery in Thornton.

Jack was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Mercedes, Texas, the son of Frank A. and Mildred Ila (Thompson) Beale. He lived in Mercedes until 1942, where he graduated from Mercedes High School. He graduated from Purdue University with a teacher's certificate.

He lived in Vancouver, Wash., from 1942-1990. He was a steamfitter for a mechanical contractor. The last 17 years he was the superintendent of fabrication and sales manager for University Mechanical, in San Diego, Calif., and A.J. Zinda Co. in Portland, Ore.

Jack married Virginia Schonemann on Aug. 19, 1958. They retired to Thornton, in 1990.

Jack was a past president of Grace Lutheran Church, in Vancouver, Wash., past chairman of American Welding Society in Portland, Ore., member of Executive Board Union No. 290, in Portland, Ore., for 12 years, welding instructor for U.A. No. 290 for 17 years, on the advisory board for Portland Community College, in Clark College, Vancouver, Wash., and Clackamas Community College, in Clackamas, Ore.

He enjoyed church work, golf and sports on TV.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Vancouver, Wash., U.A. No. 290, Portland, Ore., Richland Lutheran Church, Thornton, where he was a trustee, the American Welding Society, and the Thornton Lions Club.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Beale, of Thornton; two sisters-in-law, Polly Schonemann and her husband Marion, of Thornton, and Judith Lightbody and her husband, Larry, of Thornton; brothers-in-law, Duane Mabb, of Thornton, and Jack Stiles, of Portland, Ore.; eight nieces and nephews; 14 grand nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends in the Pacific Northwest, California and Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank A Beale, in 1935, and Mildred Beale, in 1973; brother, James Beale, in 1999; sister-in-laws, Marian Stiles, in 1987, and Shirley Mabb, in 1999; parents-in-law, William Schonemann, in 1984, and Grace Schonemann, in 1997.

MERLIN JOHN 'BUD' NEUBERGER

KLEMME - Funeral services for Merlin John "Bud" Neuberger, 79, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Klemme, with Pastor Curtis DeVance officiating. Interment will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme.

Merlin John "Bud" Neuberger, the son of John and Mary (Yahnke) Neuberger, was born Oct. 14, 1920, on a farm east of Klemme. He attended country school in Ell Township and began working on the family farm.

He was united in marriage to Marcele Blumer in 1941 and they farmed for awhile and moved to Renwick, where Bud ran a milk truck and delivered mail.

He was united in marriage to Betty Ward on April 21, 1979, and they had lived in Klemme in the house his uncle built since their marriage.

Bud was a member of the United Methodist Church in Klemme, loved woodworking, gardening, watching birds and planting trees. He was one that always liked a good story and could tell them as well.

He died on Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Those thankful for sharing his life are his wife, Betty, of Klemme; daughter, Marolee Neuberger of Jackson, Mich.; sons, Dean Neuberger and his wife, Vickie, of Aplington, Iowa, Brad Neuberger and his wife, Dana, of Lee Summit, Mo.; stepdaughter, Celeste Ehrecke and her husband, Jerry, of Wilton; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Carl, the son of August and Anna Eimbrink Traeger, was born Oct. 4, 1915, in Minnesota. At any early age, he moved with his family to the Belmond area where he attended country school.

Carl was united in marriage with Donna Kroeger on Sept. 20, 1950, at the United Methodist Church in Belmond. The couple made their home and farmed east of Belmond.

Carl discontinued his farming operation in 1975 and was then employed at the seed corn plant until his retirement. He enjoyed helping area farmers during his retirement.

Carl always loved working with animals, especially horses - if it involved horses; he wanted to be there. He never missed the Waverly Horse Sale.

Carl was a member of the Hitchintogodriving in Clarion.

Carl is survived by three daughters, Kathryn Quam of Thornton, Lorie Halsne and her husband, Richard, of Thornton, and Christa Traeger of Belmond; five sons, Keith and his wife, Karen, of Eagle Grove, James and his wife, Elizabeth, of Grundy Center, Larry and his wife, Deb, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Kevin and his wife, Joni, of Eagle Grove, and Craig and his wife, Dawn, of Renwick; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Edna Kroeger of Belmond; two sisters, Edna Mae Willey of Belmond and Marie Stecher of Belmond; and a host of friends.

Lillard was born Oct. 20, 1901, in Trimble, Ky., the son of R. J. and Clara (Durham) Nicholas. He grew up in the Nora Springs area where he attended school.

Lillard was married to Levetta F. Edgar on May 25, 1945, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He lived in the Rock Falls area for most of his life. He was a self-employed painter for his entire life.

He is survived by sisters-in-law, Bernice Edgar of Rock Falls and Geraldine Hyde of Rock Falls; a brother-in-law, Roland Edgar of Manly; 17 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Levetta on Oct. 28, 1997; one brother and one sister.

RALPH E. WHERRY

OSAGE - Ralph E. Wherry, 96, of Osage, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at the Faith Home Nursing Home in Osage. Ralph was born April 13, 1904, at Rhodes, Iowa, the son of Frank and Maude (Sutton) Wherry.

On March 10, 1928, he married Laura Thorena Lindley, daughter of Ole and Mary Lindley, of Osage. They were married in Minneapolis, Minn. It was a double wedding with Ralph's brother, Loran, and Laura's sister, Clara.

Ralph and Laura made their home on a farm until 1934 when they moved to Osage. Ralph was employed by Mitchell County Maintenance for 23 years and later for Standard Oil until his retirement

He then farmed the land of his sister, Marguerite Erbe, for five years. In April 1994 he moved to the Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar for five years until February 1999 when he moved to the Faith Home in Osage.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage, with Pastor Dennis Hanson and Pastor Roy Ott officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

He is survived by two sons, Darrell "Mick" and his wife, Shirley, of Osage, and Marvin and his wife, Arla, of Marsailles, Ill.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
