LUTHER ADOLPH YOUNGE

SHEFFIELD - Funeral services for Luther Adolph Younge, 83, of Sheffield, will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton, with the Rev. Jerry Gernander officiating. Interment will be in Richland Lutheran Cemetery in Thornton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield.

Luther Adolph Younge was born on Aug. 23, 1917, on a farm near Thornton, the oldest son of John A. and Augusta (Peterson) Younge. Luther attended school in the Thornton area.

Luther and Margaret Oelkers were united in marriage Dec. 17, 1938, in Des Moines. Their union was blessed with five children, Gary, Mary, Robert, Ronald and Barbara.

Luther was involved in farming and farm-related business his entire adult years, including being a 4-H leader. He was a lifelong member of the Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton, where he served his church in various offices.

He served as storm spotter for Sheffield for many years, was on the town council, and served as Sheffield's mayor.

Luther was honored as Outstanding Citizen at the Sheffield Festival 2000 last August. He served in an advisory capacity for the Sunrise Homes and on the planning committee for the Sheffield Care Center.

Luther died on Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at the Sheffield Care Center in Sheffield at the age of 83.

His hobbies included fishing, woodworking, watching sports, visiting the sick and enjoying his extended family.

Luther is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Sheffield; three sons, Gary and his wife, Bonnie, of Thornton, Robert and his wife, Lona, of Hampton, and Ronald and his wife, Mary Jane, of Mankato, Minn.; two daughters, Mary Hansen and her husband, Allen, of Lake Crystal, Minn., and Barbara, of Rochester, Minn.; as well as 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Luther was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters.

Memorials are requested to be sent to the Younge Scholarship at Bethany Lutheran College or to Hospice.

JENNIE GANSEVELD

BRITT - Jennie Ganseveld, 88, of Britt, passed away Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services for Jennie Ganseveld will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, with Pastor Stephen J. Bibb, OSL, officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Britt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, and one hour before services on Monday.

Jennie Ganseveld, 88, the daughter of Klaas and Fannie (Abbas) Ganseveld, was born in Britt, Hancock County, on Dec. 12, 1911. As a child she and her family lived in the rural areas of Britt, Hutchins, Crystal Lake, Dumont and Nora Springs.

Jennie attended the rural country schools. She lived most of her adult life in the family home in Britt.

For many years, Jennie worked as a cook in the S&S Café and Wilson's Café.

Jennie enjoyed gardening and working in her yard. Her special joy was her family and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She especially enjoyed family get togethers.

Due to failing health, Jennie entered the Westview Care Center in Britt in January of 2000. On Sunday, Oct. 15, 2000, Jennie entered Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. She slipped into eternal life on Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000).

Jennie was preceded in death by her daughter, Loretta; and her son, Harold; her parents; nine brothers, Bill, George, Dan, Pete, Staffer, Nick, John, Fred and Klaus; six sisters, Anna, Grace, Minnie, twin sisters, Fannie and Nancy, and an infant sister.

Left to mourn her passing is her daughter, Beverly Boomgarden and her husband, Marvin, of Renwick; grandchildren, Brenda Paschke and husband, Rod, of Webster City, Kevin Ganseveld and wife, Mary, of Forest City, Carl Anderson and wife, Marcelina, of Kanawha, and John Ganseveld and wife, Kelly, of Klemme; great-grandchildren, Chad Wood, of Webster City, Larissa and Zachary Ganseveld, of Forest City, Jelyn Anderson, of Iowa City, Jhema, Kerri, and Maria Anderson, of Kanawha, and Jacob Ganseveld, of Klemme; and many, many nieces, nephews, and friends.

ALICE TENA RITTER

MASON CITY - Alice Tena (Gabriel) Ritter, 87, of Mason City, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

There will be no funeral services or visitation. According to her wishes her body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine for scientific purposes.

Alice Tena Ritter was born on July 26, 1913, in Northwood, the daughter of Tennis Ole and Martha Marie (Espland) Gabriel.

She was baptized on Sept. 28, 1913, at the South Shell Rock Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, and reaffirmed the faith of her baptism through confirmation on May 8, 1927, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northwood.

She attended and received her education in the Worth County rural schools, graduating from Northwood High School. She also attended and graduated from La James College and Beauty Culture in Mason City.

After completing her schooling she worked for Damons Beauty Salon in Mason City for 15 years and also was owner and operator of Alice's Beauty Salon in Mason City for 22 years until her retirement.

She was united in marriage to Donald Ritter. He preceded her in death.

She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Mason City.

She is survived by a brother, Neal Gabriel, of Bloomington, Minn., as well as several nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Her parents; and brothers and sisters, Oscar, Tennis, Eddie, Henry, Clarence, Lester and Hartwig Gabriel and Opal Gordon and Grace Nieman preceded her in death.

AUGUSTA S. CRAUN

MASON CITY - Augusta S. Craun, 99, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the St. Peter Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan, with the Rev. John Rutowicz officiating. Interment will be in Ocheyedan Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before services on Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be given to St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Augusta Sophie (Sehr) Craun was born May 19, 1901, in Ocheyedan, the daughter of August and Caroline (Ohlendorf) Sehr. Her father was killed when a steam engine exploded while threshing before Augusta was born.

She was baptized in Zion Lutheran Church and confirmed in St. Peter Lutheran Church, where she remained a member throughout her life. She received her education in St. Peter Lutheran Parochial School and graduated from Ocheyedan High School in 1919.

Augusta was united in marriage to Lester I. Craun on Aug. 31, 1920, in Spirit Lake.

Augusta enjoyed doing fancy work; making quilts, doilies, aprons and writing letters. She had resided at Good Shepherd Health Center since Nov. 3, 1994.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Good Shepherd for the excellent care and attention they provided.

Augusta is survived by a daughter, Mardella Olson and her husband, Harold "Tony," of Wayne; two sons, Maurice Craun and his wife, Ruby, of Ocheyedan, and Kent Craun and his wife, Jan, of Mason City; a son-in-law, Bill Bodey, of Snohomish, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, in 1969; a son, Arlo, in 1974; a daughter, Arlene, in 1995; her parents, two sisters, one brother, two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

CHARLES CITY - Dorothy C. (Mrs. Andrew) Horvei, 84, of 617 Seventh Ave., died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

DOROTHY MARGARET GARRISON

CLEAR LAKE - Dorothy Margaret Garrison, 80, of rural Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

She was cremated and private inurnment services will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake. Family suggests memorials to Dorothy M. Garrison Memorial Fund.

Dorothy was born in Fort Dodge, on April 15, 1920, the daughter of Fred and Inger (Peterson) Williams. She graduated from Sherman High School in Goodland, Kan., where she was homecoming queen.

Dorothy liked to sing, dance and draw pictures. She enjoyed her cat Muffin and her dog Scubbie. She was diagnosed with cancer about two years ago.

The family would like to thank the doctors and staff at Mercy Cancer Center and Hospice of North Iowa for the wonderful care. We also appreciate the thoughts and cares of her friends at Wildwood Cottage in Opportunity Village in Clear Lake.

Dorothy is survived by two children, Mary Garrison, of Clear Lake, and Bob Garrison and his wife Kareen, of Nevada, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Betty Anderson and her husband, Ray, of Grand Junction, Colo.; one brother-in-law, Bill Garrison and his wif, Geri, of Bellevue, Wash.; three grandchildren, Kevin Garrison, Chris Garrison and Kelly Garrison; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, in 1972; one sister, Mary June Choparde; and an infant brother.

RELLA M. POSTMA

MASON CITY - Rella M. Postma, 87, of 106 21st St. S.E., died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Rella Mae Postma was born Aug. 8, 1913 in Mason City, the daughter of William H. and Carrie (Anderson) Ross. She graduated from Mason City High School.

She was united in marriage to Dick Postma on June 9, 1932 in Owatonna, Minn. She worked for the Eadmar Hotel for ten years. She also worked at the Cerro Gordo Hotel (now the Norwest Bank Site). She was actively involved in many activities including the Ladies Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Milwaukee Railroad Women's Club, past president of the Grandmothers Club, PTA, TAE Club, Iowa Cub Scouts and a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. In her spare time she enjoyed working on ceramics and playing cards.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Bill E. Postma and wife, Phyllis, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dick G. Postma and wife Mary, of Palo; grandchildren, Carin Akers of Las Vegas, Nev., Keely Everett of Lafayette, Calif., Matt Postma ,of Walford, Ann Day of Des Moines, Paige Friederick, of Cedar Rapids and Megan Postma, of Palo; great-grandchildren, Sydney Day, Logan Friederick, Jordan Friederick, Anne Everett, and Megan Everett.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Howard Ross, a great-grandchild, Kelsey Everett.

DUANE J. "DEWEY" BRUNNER

NEW HAVEN - Duane J. "Dewey" Brunner, 76, of Bettendorf, formerly of New Haven, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at the Genesis Medical Center, West Campus in Davenport.

Duane was born Nov. 9, 1923 at the family home in New Haven, the son of Julius and Nell (Loftus) Brunner. He attended Catholic grade school in New Haven and graduated from the Pillsbury Military Academy at Owatonna, Minnesota in 1941. He entered military service with the 8th Air Force Group in Thurleigh, England during World War II. He was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 bomber and flew 30 missions over Germany. After the service he worked for his father at the creamery in new Haven. He also lived and worked for a time in California and Alaska.

He was united in marriage to Glea Jordan on Sept. 10, 1960 at Mason City. In 1977 they moved to Bettendorf where he was sales-operations manager at Meadows Warehousing and retired in 1987. On Nov. 24, 1963 their son John was born. Duane was a devoted family man, a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Davenport, and an avid sports fan.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, New Haven with the Rev. Ray E. Atwood officiating. Interment will be in the Park Cemetery in Nora Springs at 1 p.m. with military rites by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, where there will be a scripture service at 7 p.m. and one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Survivors include his wife, Glea Brunner, of Bettendorf; one son, John Brunner and his wife, Tracy, of Madrid, and their son, Alexander; and one sister, Vivian Mork, of New Haven.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Vernon Brunner.

PHYLLIS I. EGGERS

MASON CITY - Phyllis I. Eggers, 68, of Mason City, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, 318 North Adams, Mason City with the Rev. Rick Eichenlaub officiating. According to her wishes, Phyllis has been cremated.

Phyllis was born Jan. 30, 1932 in Clear Lake, the daughter of Harry and Edith (Austin) Grant. She lived and worked in Mason City for many years as an Avon Representative, at the Troika Restaurant and as an aide for Amicare.

Phyllis was a loving mother to eight children, Bob Eggers of Charles City, Dennis Eggers of Mason City, David Eggers of Belmond, Steven Eggers, of Los Angeles, Calif., Dee Clausen, of Mason City, Dan Eggers, of Mason City, Bruce Eggers of Rudd, and John Eggers, of Mason City.

She is loved and will be missed by her friends, family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

MASON CITY - Jerry Lee Dodge, 55, of 21206 Ulmus Ave., Mason City died Saturday (Oct. 21, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, after a long battle with complications of thyroid cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Mr. Al Williams of the Mason City Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall will officiate. Inurnment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd. There will be no visitation.

EMIL A. CHRISTENSEN

GARNER - Emil A. Christensen, 86, of Garner died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kay Hooper of the United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at Madison Township Cemetery south of Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 P.M., Wednesday at the Cataldo Funeral Home, Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Emil Alexander Christensen, the son of Adolf and Emma (Johnson) Christensen, was born Jan. 14, 1914 on a farm near Hayfield. He attended school at Hayfield where he graduated from high school in 1933. Emil was an active basketball player in high school and continued to play after graduation on a team known as "The Black Raiders."

On Sept. 1, 1935 he married Dorothy Keel of Forest City at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home on the same farm where Emil was born and raised. They farmed there until retiring in 1988 and moving into Garner. Emil and Dorothy spent their winters in Florida for many years. He enjoyed his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sports and fishing.

Emil was active in community affairs until failing health prevented him from doing so the past 20 years. In 1939, he was elected a member of the Hayfield school board serving as president from 1945 to 1960. In 1963, he was elected to the Hancock County Board of Education and later named president until 1975, when the county board dissolved and became the Area Education Agency in Mason City now known as NIACC. He was an active member of the Hayfield United Methodist Church and presently a member of the Garner United Methodist Church and the Welcome Sunday school class. He was president of the Britt Creamery board for 20 years, state director and vice-president of the Iowa Creamery Association board and a past president of the Hancock Dairy Herd Improvement Association. In October of 1966, Emil was named Iowa's Distinguished Dairyman. He was a long time member of the Hancock County Farm Bureau and the Garner Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Christensen of Garner; five sons, Roger Christensen and wife, Sharon, of Austin, Minn., Dick Christensen and wife, Peggy, of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla., Don Christensen and wife, Dorothy, of Orlando, Fla., Jim Christensen and wife, Julie, of Issaquah, Wash., and Keith Christensen and special friend, Bonnie Bacon, of Ventura; 14 grandchildren, Chad Christensen and wife, Michelle, of Shingle Springs, Calif., Wade Christensen and wife, Barbara, of Arvada, Colo., Kellie Wegner and husband, Tom, of Canton, Ga., Rick Christensen of Eustis, Fla., Robin Snyder of Spring Hill, Fla., Tonya Compton and husband, Scott, of Eustis, Fla., Sonya Mulholland and husband, Jay, of Eustis, Fla., Sara Wagner and husband, Scott, of Yardley, Pa., Heidi Christensen of Topeka, Kan., Andrew Christensen and wife, Majo, of Alicante, Spain, Jason Christensen of Seattle, Wash., Joshua Christensen and wife, Amanda, of Bamberg, Germany and Jenny and Jessica Christensen of Issaquah, Wash.; 11 great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren, Donna Lindsay and Kyle Lawson of Orlando, Fla..

CLEO MAY TUDOR

ROWAN - Cleo May (Peddle) Tudor died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at the Dows Care Center, after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at United Church of Rowan with the Rev. JoAn Skyme officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond and at the church one hour prior to services on Monday.

Cleo May (Peddle) Tudor was born May 25, 1911 north of Rowan. She was the daughter of William and Fern (Munson) Peddle. She graduated from Rowan High School with the class of 1928.

She was married to Hubert D. Tudor on Dec. 18, 1929 at Clarion. To this union, two children were born, Betty and Clebert. They farmed north of Rowan until 1956, when they moved to a farm at Nebo, Mo. Cleo and her family were baptized in the farm creek on her birthday in 1958. She and Clebert moved back to Iowa in 1964, after her husband passed away. She cooked for the Rowan school for seven years. She was the first cook for the Rowan congregate meals. She was a member of the Rowan women's fellowship. She loved gardening, making quilts, traveling with her family, cooking, baking, and especially her grandchildren.

She will be missed by her daughter, Betty Roberts, of Forest City; and former son-in-law, Roy Roberts of Rowan; her son, Clebert Tudor and his wife, Linda, of Lebanon, Mo.; six grandchildren, Paul Roberts and his wife, Sandi, of Rowan, Dan Roberts of Rowan, Tim Roberts of Dows, Eric Tudor and his wife, Sarah, of Lebanon, Mo., Rachel Luick and her husband, Tom, of Glenview, Ill., and Deb Hoover and her husband, Steve, of Forest City; six great-grandchildren, Jason and Stacey Roberts of Titonka, Chris and Travis Roberts of Rowan, and Alex and Shannon Tudor of Lebanon, Mo.; her sister, Lillie Lockman and her husband, Lloyd of the Belmond Health Care Center; sister-in-law, Marj Tudor of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hubert, step-father, Richard Bell, three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.

MASON CITY -Jerry Lee Dodge, 55, 21206 Ulmus Ave., Mason City, died Saturday (Oct. 21, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit after a long battle with the complications of thyroid cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City. Mr. Al Williams of Mason City Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Rudd.

Jerry Lee Dodge was born Jan. 7, 1945 in New Hampton, the son of Maurice A. and Grace C. (Tanner) Dodge. He attended school in Rock Falls.

On Jan. 16, 1971 he was united in marriage to Jennette May Schrank. Jerry Lee was a longtime dairy farmer. His love for farming was reflected in the time he spent raising horses and cattle. Jerry was noted for his tinkering with motors and mechanical work. His fondness of mechanical things was expressed in the admiration he held for his Ford Tractor. When not involved in mechanics or the farm, he loved to spend time playing with his kids.

Those thankful for sharing his life include his wife, Jennette, of Mason City; his mother, Mrs. Grace Dodge, rural Rock Falls; four children, Victoria Ann Benhart and her husband, Keith, of Manly, Monica Jennette Dodge and Lee R.M. NORTHWOOD - Jeffery Mark Sietsema, 43, formerly of Northwood, died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2000) at his residence in Coralville, of natural causes.

Jeff was born June 2, 1957 in Waterloo, the son of Ronald and Sharon (Freese) Sietsema. He was raised in Northwood and graduated from the Northwood public schools in 1975. He was a graduate of Coe College in Cedar Rapids in 1979. He was also a graduate of the Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science in Dallas, Texas in 1984, graduating with honors. He had many interests, and he invented a modern embalming surgical tool. He loved the outdoors and he enjoyed writing, hosting a radio program in Iowa City and listening to music. He has lived in Coralville the past 15 years.

He is survived by his parents, Ron and Sheri Sietsema, of Northwood; a brother, Chad Sietsema and his wife, Christine, of Rochester, Minn.; a sister, Piper Manatt and her husband, Tony, of DeWitt; nephews, Benjamin and Phillip Sietsema, Hans Sleichter and Beau Manatt.

MARTHA JUNE JOHNSON

Martha June Johnson, daughter of James and Cordie Belle (Whitaker) Jones, was born June 30, 1918, in Sullivan County, Mo.

On July 1, 1935, she was married to William E. Johnson at Forest City. They made their home at Britt. In 1960, they moved to Walker, Minn., where they owned and operated Johnson's Harbor Resort until they retired and moved to Lewisville, Texas, in 1980.

She died at her home in Lewisville on Saturday (Oct. 21, 2000) at the age of 82 years.

She is survived by her husband, William Johnson, of Lewisville, Texas; three children, Wilma "Billie" Luppen and her husband, Edward, of Kanawha, Karen Olsen and her husband, Vernon, of Lewisville, Texas, and Dennis "Rick" Johnson and his wife, Lindi, of Grandview, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Richard Luppen; a brother and sisters.

CLEAR LAKE -Michael Robert Moon, 45, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) in an auto accident in Longview, Wash. He had recently moved to Longview with his son, Nick.

Mike was born on Dec. 29, 1954, in Mason City, the son of Charles and Margaret Moon. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church and was a 1973 graduate of Mason City High School. He was employed as a carpenter in the Mason City and Clear Lake area for many years.

Mike was a devoted father to his three children, Sarah, Brian and Nick and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking.

He is survived by his daughter, Sarah, of Post Falls, Idaho; and two sons, Brian and Nick, of Clear Lake; his mother, Marge Moon, of Mason City; three sisters, Lois Schwade and her husband, Gene, of Mason City, Sherry Wallis, of Farmington, Ark., and Debra Severson, of Mason City; one brother, Chuck Moon and his wife, Darla, of Osage; nieces and nephews, Justin Schwade, of Seattle, Wash., Jessica Schwade, of Mason City, Drew Wallis, of Farmington, Ark., Heather and Travis Severson, of Mason City, Ashley and Matt Moon, of Osage, and Brandon Moon, of Latimer. He is also survived by a very special friend, Terry Horton, her children and family, of Longview, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chuck Moon, in 1996; a niece, Krista Moon; and his grandparents.

Dora Dena Kaduce was born June 25, 1914, in Alexander, the daughter of Lulof and Hanna (Suntken) Kaduce.

In May of 1930, Dora was united in marriage to Albert A. Boster. Mr. Boster died in February of 1957. She was then united in marriage to Henry "Hank" Boelman on Dec. 14, 1957, in Thornton. Mr. Boelman died Oct. 20, 1983.

For 13 years Dora was employed as a casings seamstress at the Decker Meat Packing Company. She then went to work in the housekeeping department of the former Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Dora was a woman of strong faith, which was reflected in her membership at Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the West Haven/Dorcas Circle of the church. The love she and her family shared gave her the strength to see her through the passing of six of her seven children.

Dora was noted in her family, church and community for her superior homemade peanut brittle. She was also fond of crocheting, especially baby blankets and towels. She also enjoyed doing many other types of crafts.

Those who were blessed by Dora's life include a daughter and her husband, Leta and Cornell Dunt of Lost Nation; a brother and his wife, Louie and Edith Kaduce of Meservey; two sisters, Mrs. Alvina Olson of Annendale, Minn., and Mrs. Helen Caywood of Mason City; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Delores Boster of Sheldon and Mrs. Dolores Boster of Mason City; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Frieda Kaduce of Belmond; and 87 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Dora was preceded in death by five sons, Daniel, Delbert, Murril, Marion and Raymond Boster; a daughter, Annetta Witt; a brother, Ted Kaduce; two sisters, Lavonne Martin and Louise Cooper; and two sisters in infancy.

Velma Mardine Smith was born Oct. 12, 1914, in rural Dougherty, Floyd County, a daughter of Clifford Leo and Lillie Elizabeth (Schaefer) Smith, and died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2000, at Floyd County Memorial Hospital from complications of a heart attack.

She was baptized Aug. 15, 1915, and confirmed April 1, 1928, at St. Peter Lutheran Church. She received her education in the rural Floyd County schools and graduated from Greene High School in 1934 with a normal training certificate.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth Earl Shreve on June 6, 1934, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Waverly.

They first made their home in Bristow and later moved to Greene, where they farmed until 1954. Velma worked for Shaffer's Jack Spratt Grocery, Morey's Westside Grocery and the Farmers Inc. Co-op Society, all of Greene. In 1966 they moved to Charles City, where they purchased the Riverview Motel, which they operated until 1974, at which time they retired and returned to Greene.

Following retirement Velma enjoyed crocheting sweaters and making quilt tops for the church mission projects. She was a member of the Chat-a-While Club and the Birthday Club.

She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Beverly and her husband, Thomas Menk, of New Brighton, Minn.; five grandchildren and their spouses, Jill and Barry Froehlich of Circle Pines, Minn., Roger and Beth Menk of North Oaks, Minn., Bryce and Colette Menk of Gem Lake, Minn., Sara and Scott Chartier and John Menk, all of New Brighton, Minn.; five great-grandchildren, Hallie Froehlich, Spencer Menk, Colton Menk, Britta Menk and Danielle Menk; four sisters, Lela Menken, Irene Allen, Lois and her husband, Robert Eliasen, all of Greene, and Fern and her husband, Lyle Bienemann of Clarksville; and many nieces and nephews.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, on Feb. 18, 1996; her parents; one sister, Iva Barnett; and one brother, Dale Smith, in infancy.

VERNON A. PETER

NORA SPRINGS - Vernon A. Peter, 79, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center, Mason City.

In keeping with his wishes his body was cremated and a memorial service will be announced at a later date. Scheckler Colonial Chapel, Nora Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon was born July 6, 1921, on the family farm in Floyd County, the son of Ferd and Martha (Schutz) Peter. Vernon attended Nora Springs High School and began working on the family farm.

He married Wanda Brown on Aug. 23, 1946, at the Presbyterian church parsonage in Rudd.

Following the sale of the farm, Vernon became a self-employed truck driver until he retired because of poor health.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper and loved the great outdoors.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Wanda, of Nora Springs; two daughters, Kristie Peter and Patti Peter, both of Nora Springs; a niece, Marilyn Peter Hamand of Nora Springs; and several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur and Lester Peter; and a sister, Blanche Lichtsinn.

Wanda worked as a waitress and cashier at several locations in Mason City and retired in 1999 after eight years with Kum & Go. Wanda will be remembered for her friendly smile and her devotion to her customers.

Wanda was an avid Green Bay Packers fan, against her family's wishes. She loved John Wayne, Mark Twain, Norman Rockwell and especially enjoyed listening to Celine Dion.

Wanda was devoted to her husband, kids and grandkids. She liked playing cards with her family. She was also a great cook and she loved to watch the leaves change in the fall.

Arlene was born Nov. 8, 1932, in Grant City, Mo., the daughter of Irvin and Effie Dale (Ross) Rinehart. She graduated from high school in Grant City in 1951. She graduated from Northwest Missouri State, Maryville, Mo., and earned her master's degree in Fort Collins, Colo.

She taught home economics and science for more than 30 years - her last 16 years at Ventura High School.

After her retirement in 1985, she was bus tour director for six years with Northwest Bus Tours.

Arlene loved to travel, read and work with the neighborhood children. She was a member of Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church in Clear Lake, N.E.A. and the I.S.E.A..

Arlene is survived by her brother, Roy L. Rinehart and his wife, Jean, of Lawson, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.

He is survived by his daughter, Sarah, of Post Falls, Idaho; and two sons, Brian and Nick, of Clear Lake; his mother, Marge Moon, of Mason City; three sisters, Lois Schwade and her husband, Gene, of Mason City, Sherry Wallis of Farmington, Ark., and Debra Severson of Mason City; one brother, Chuck Moon and his wife, Darla, of Osage; nieces and nephews, Justin Schwade of Seattle, Wash., Jessica Schwade of Mason City, Drew Wallis of Farmington, Ark., Heather and Travis Severson of Mason City, Ashley and Matt Moon of Osage, and Brandon Moon of Latimer. He is also survived by a very special friend, Terry Horton, her children and family, of Longview, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his father, Chuck Moon, in 1996; a niece, Krista Moon; and his grandparents.

Mike will be greatly missed by his children, family and many, many friends.

GRACE BLANCHARD

OSAGE - Grace was called Home by her Lord on Oct. 20, 2000. Waiting to welcome her was her husband of 72 years, Harry, and their daughter, Gracie. Grace spent her last days at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City, having been transferred there from Heritage Care Center, where she lived the last six years.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the Rev. Rich Murray officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. before the services on Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Grace was born in Nemaha, Iowa, on July 27, 1904, the third of four children, to Pearly and Nora (Clark) Tattman. She was raised at Nemaha. Grace married Harry Blanchard on April 17, 1921, at Sac City, Iowa. They moved to Mason City about 1935. Grace and Harry were parents to two children, Grace, born in 1921, and Sonny, born in 1937.

Grace was a waitress at the Bus Depot Restaurant, Freddie's Covered Wagon, The Red Rose Café and Maxines Sandwich Shop, all in Mason City. She enjoyed this work, especially meeting people.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Gildner Circle in Mason City. Grace and Harry were Cub Scout leaders. In 1951 they moved to Osage. She was a bookkeeper for the family business, Blanchard Machine, from 1951 until 1970 when they retired. After Harry's death in 1992, she lived off and on at nursing facilities in Osage until moving to the Heritage Care Center in Mason City in 1994.

Grace's favorite spot was on a lake fishing in northern Minnesota where they had a second home for many years. She looked forward to her children and grandchildren spending time there every summer. She kept busy with her crochet hook making numerous table cloths, bedspreads and doilies. These she lovingly gave away as gifts to family and friends. Nothing pleased her more than having a family gathering where she would prepare one of her big luscious meals. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren would bring out the little girl in her and put a sparkle in her eyes.

She was a great-great grandma for 13 years

Those left who were blessed by her life and will cherish her memory include her son, Sonny and his wife, Patty; five grandchildren, Sharon Gilmore and her husband, Bob, of Port Aransas, Texas, Randall Hert of Mason City, Linda Dlouhy of Belmond, Michael Blanchard and his wife, Priscilla, of Cedar Falls, and Diane Blanchard of Steven's Point, Wis. She leaves seven great-grandchildren, Diana York, Jim Hert Jr., Bill Hert, Johnny Hert, Alex Dlouhy, Zachariah Blanchard and Abraham Blanchard; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Waiting for her in Heaven are her parents; husband, Harry, who died in 1992; daughter, Gracie, who died in 1998; grandson, Jim Hert Sr., who died in 1999; and great-granddaughter, Cathy Franklin; two sisters, Nellie and Nettie; and a brother Adelbert.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

BIRDIE M. CRAIG

MANLY - Birdie M. Craig, 99, of 406 West Bosworth, Manly, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly, with the Rev. Randy Nielsen officiating. Burial will at the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, and for one hour before services at the church.

Birdie was born Oct. 3, 1901, in West Jersey, Ill., the daughter of Edward and Carrie (Hermanse) Swank. She was united in marriage to George "Bill" Belar on April 22, 1920, in Duncan, Ill.

The first four years of their married life were spent at Sauk Centre, Minn. Then they moved to the Manly area where they farmed until Mr. Craig passed away in 1937. The next year, Birdie moved into Manly.

She was employed at the Manly Bakery and at Manly Produce from which she retired in 1963.

Birdie enjoyed reading, crocheting, knitting and jigsaw puzzles until her eyesight failed her several years ago.

She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Manly.

Birdie was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed being with her family.

Birdie is survived by two daughters, Ruth Backhaus and her husband, Harry, and Dorothy Schulte, all of Manly; six grandchildren, Roger Backhaus and his wife, Donna, of Manly, Donna Mae Tyrrell and her husband, O'Brien, of Northwood, Janet Monson of Manly, Cathy Skatter and her husband, Manford, of Joice, Ted Schulte and his wife, Patti, of Carmel, Ind., and Bill Schulte and his wife, Jina, of Manly; 16 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and one great-nephew, Ronald Camp, of Elmwood, Ill.

Birdie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1937; one infant grandson, Glen Backhaus; one sister, Golden Camp; and one son-in-law, Truman Schulte.

LOIS M. CHARBONNEAU

BRITT - Lois M. Charbonneau, 73, of Britt passed away Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Lois Charbonneau will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Britt.

Lois M. Charbonneau was born at her family home in Kanawha on Sept. 16, 1927. She was the youngest child of William and Matilda Escher Deibler. Lois attended the public school in Kanawha and graduated from Kanawha High School with the class of 1945.

She eloped to the Little Brown Church and was united in marriage to Peter Charbonneau on July 23, 1945, while Pete was serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Following his discharge, the couple built their new home where they have since resided. Lois enjoyed being a homemaker. Her priority was her family.

Lois enjoyed bowling, knitting and traveling in all 50 states as well as Europe and the Caribbean.

Lois is survived by two sons, Mitch Charbonneaux of Britt, and William "Mike" Charbonneaux and his wife, Janice, and their two sons, Justin and John, of Britt; and one sister, Della Middlesworth of Des Moines.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Pete, on April 11, 2000; her parents; and six brothers, Lang, Pat, Lyle, Art, Toby and Charlie.

JOSEPHINE DEAN

FORT DODGE - Josephine Dean, 85, of 2806 Fourth Ave. N., Fort Dodge, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) at the Marian Home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, with the Rev. Mel Ammon officiating. Burial will be in the Newark Township Cemetery in rural Vincent.

Josephine B. Klunder was born June 15, 1915, in Elberon, Iowa. She attended school in Mason City, graduating from Mason City High School in 1933.

On Aug. 8, 1933, she married Leonard Dean and after their marriage the couple lived in Mason City. She worked for Kastles Cap & Gown in Clear Lake, until her retirement in 1976. In 1986 they moved to Fort Dodge.

After their retirement they spent their summers at their cabin on Woman Lake in Northern Iowa until the last two years. Her hobbies included crafts, playing cards, and she loved to fish. On Aug. 2, 2000, she moved into the Marian Home in Fort Dodge.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge, the National Degree of Honor, where she had served as president for the Mason City Chapter. She was also a member of the Fort Dodge Women's Club.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard Dean, of Fort Dodge; her two sisters, Dorothy Kolpek, of Silver Lake, Minn., and Charlene Wedmore, of Tempe, Ariz.; her two grandsons, Dave and Richard Minikis, both of Fort Dodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ann (Chezik) Klunder; her daughter, Shirley Minikis; and a sister, Marge Petra.

BERNARD JAMES 'JIM' SMITH

CANON CITY, Colo. - Bernard James "Jim" Smith, 75, died unexpectedly at his Canon City home Monday (Oct. 23, 2000).

A funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Cross Abbey, 2951 East Highway 50, in Canon City, Colo.

A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Wilson-Andrews Funeral Home, 1449 S. 9th Street, Canon City, Colo.

A native of Mason City, Iowa, Smith was born April 16, 1925, the son of Leo F. Smith and Mary Bernadette Barrett Smith. He graduated from Holy Family High School. Much of his life, he made contributions to the family cattle farm. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1947.

He married Mary F. Smith in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 5, 1947. The Smiths moved to Canon City in 1985. After 25 years with International Harvester, he had retired as a regional manager, and then owned and operated a private trucking firm.

Smith, a Roman Catholic, attended Mass at Holy Cross Abbey. He was a devoted father and a skilled handyman who enjoyed helping his children. Of pure Irish descent, he enjoyed a well spun story and will be remembered for his sense of humor, his wisdom, humility and quiet dignity.

He enjoyed the Colorado outdoors and had a great affinity with animals, particularly his dog, Copper. He will be buried alongside his beloved wife in Lakeside Cemetery.

He is survived by a son, Bernard Leo Smith of Rudd, Iowa; and four daughters, Karen (Michael) Vos of Corpus Christi, Texas, Mary Ann B. Smith of Canon City, Colo., Colleen Smith of Denver, Colo., and Lorraine (Scott) Snow of Lafayette, Colo.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia S. Cain of Williamsburg, Va., and Mary Anne Lawlis of Mequon, Wis.; sister-in-law, Carol Smith of St. Peter, Minn.; and a brother, J. Leo Smith of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his son, Daniel M. Smith; and his brothers, John R. Smith, Thomas J. Smith and Michael B. Smith.
