VERNON V. MCLAUGHLIN SR.

BELMOND - Vernon V. McLaughlin Sr., 89, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with the Rev. David Beckman officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond. A parish rosary will begin at 2:30 and a Scripture service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

DONNA JEAN MARTIN

THORNTON - Donna Jean Martin, 58, of Boone, formerly of Thornton, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Mercy Hospice House in Johnston.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until service time at the chapel Tuesday.

Donna Jean Martin was born July 25, 1942, in Thornton, the daughter of Leslie H. and Rozella (Pederson) Dirks. She received her education in the Sheffield, Thornton, Latimer and Swaledale school systems, graduating from Swaledale High School in 1961. She also graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

Donna was united in marriage to Norman Martin on Oct. 20, 1961, in Mason City. Throughout her life Donna worked as a nurse for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Firestone Tire Company in Des Moines; and until her illness prevented her from working, she was employed with the Boone Activity Work Center.

She enjoyed flowers, taking walks, camping, taking the residence from the Boone Activity Work Center to the Puffer Billy Days in Boone, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

She was a member of the Lutheran Church in Reunnells.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Norman Martin of Grimes; her stepfather and mother, Edwin C. and Rozella (Rose) DeVries of Greene; two daughters, Nancy Gift and her husband, Mark, of Creston, and Debbie Knight and her husband, Terri, of Sioux City; two sons, Keith Martin and his wife, Jeanie, of Des Moines, and Steven Martin and his wife, Kerri, of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Wayne Dirks and his wife, Connie, of Clear Lake, and Dallas Dirks and his wife, Sheila, of Stewartville, Minn.; four step-sisters, Esther Perkins and her husband, Daniel, of Forest City, Joyce Henning and her friend, Steve, of Forest City, Barbara Brinkman and her husband, Edward, of Ardale, and Dee Ann Frecks and her husband, Robert, of Ardale; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leslie H. Dirks, and her paternal and maternal grandparents.

SHERYL (FJELD) HANNA

JOICE - Sheryl Lynnette (Fjeld) Hanna, 39, passed away Saturday (Sept. 30, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Tuesday at Winnebago Lutheran Church in rural Lake Mills with the Rev. Bill Peters officiating. Burial will be at Winnebago Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

Cheryl Lynnette (Fjeld) Hanna, daughter of Glenn M. and Marilyn (Johnson) Fjeld, was born Nov. 20, 1960, in Forest City. She was baptized and confirmed at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church rural Joice. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1979 and Waldorf College in 1981.

She was employed as a medical secretary at Mercy Hospital in Mason City before returning to get an education degree at Mankato State University from which she graduated magna cum laude in December 1986. Sheryl was a kindergarten teacher in the Glenville-Emmons schools for 13 years.

On Sept. 7, 1985, she was united in marriage to Tim Hanna at Beaver Creek Church. They have resided in the Joice area all their married life.

Sheryl is survived by her husband, Tim, of Joice; two daughters, Chelsea (6) and Nicole (4) both at home; four brothers, Gene and his wife, Jodi Fjeld, of Forest City, Jerry and his wife, Becky Fjeld, of Joice, Roger and his wife, Terry Fjeld, of Oakdale, and Brian and his wife, Brenda Fjeld, of Alden; her parents, Glenn and Marilyn Fjeld of Joice; her mother-in-law, Wanda and her husband, Frank Haugland, of Lake Mills; one sister-in-law, Beth and her husband, Grant Edwards; three brothers-in-law, Randy and his wife, Geralyn Hanna, of Joice, Paul and his wife, Denise Hanna, of Alexandria, Minn., and Jay and his wife, Mandy Hanna, of Mankato, Minn.; nine nieces and ten nephews; and several aunts , uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Gerrald Hanna; her grandparents; and one uncle.

MATILDA (TILLIE) AINSLIE

BELMOND - Matilda (Tillie) Ainslie, 90, passed away Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Belmond Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond with the Rev. Celestyne DeVance officiating. Burial will take place in Dumont Cemetery near Dumont.

Tillie, the daughter of Popo and Hendrieka Moulder Stubbe was born May 25, 1910, near Dumont in Butler County. She grew up in the Dumont area and graduated from Dumont High School. Following graduation Tillie received her Normal Training Certificate at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught country schools in Butler and Wright counties, including Iowa Township School near Belmond.

Tillie was united in marriage with Isaac Ainslie on Aug. 10, 1930, in Palo Alto County. Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Aredale and Alexander for many years.

Tillie and Ike spent their winters in Arizona for many years. Following Ike's death in 1978 Tillie continued to enjoy her many friends in Arizona. She enjoyed playing in a kitchen band in Arizona. She also enjoyed painting and gave much of her artwork to friends and relatives.

Tillie was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.

Tillie is survived by one daughter, Denise Kalkwarf and her husband, DuWayne, of Belmond; her grandchildren, Sharon Bosshardt and her husband, Norman, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Diane Scott and her husband, Tim, of Payson, Ariz.; great-granddaughter, Tracey Bossardt; three sisters, Emma (Het) Marsh of Clarksville, Gertrude Marsh and her husband, Ralph, of Greene, and Viola (Bobbie) Davis of Dumont; one sister-in-law, June Stubbe of Aredale; numerous nieces, nephews ; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ike; a grandson, Gene Kalkwarf; one sister; and five brothers.

CAROL L. LINDSEY

MASON CITY - Carol L. Lindsey, 58, of 222 S. Pierce St., died Saturday (Sept. 30, 2000) at USA Healthcare in Mason City.

In accordance with Carol's wishes, no funeral service nor visitation will be held. Fullerton Patterson James Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, is assisting the family in the arrangements.

Carol Lee Lindsey was born Oct. 2, 1941, in Aurora, Ill., the daughter of Vern and Margaret (Neely) Vawter. In April of 1990, she was united in marriage to Jerry Lee Lindsey. Jerry preceded Carol in death on April 15, 2000.

Carol was a life-long homemaker for her husband and children. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting, sewing and gardening.

Those thankful for sharing Carol's life include her three daughters, April Shanks and her husband, Brad, of Manly; Jennifer Rasmusson of Boston, Mass., and Rebecca Jackson of Mason City; and four grandchildren, Olivia Coronado, Owen Shanks, Jose Martinez and Aaliyah Jackson. At the time of her death, Carol was proudly anticipating the birth of twin grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

GORDON DUNBAR

WATERLOO - Gordon Dunbar, 74, died Saturday (Sept. 30, 2000) at the Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.

Gordon was born May 29, 1926, in Mason City, the son of Jesse William and Ruby Lillian Whipple Dunbar.

He married Sina J. Bushnell on April 25, 1948, in Mason City. She preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 1994.

Gordon was a World War II Air Force veteran and a 1944 graduate of Mason City High School.

He was owner/operator of Karpetkleen in Waterloo for over 25 years and had previously been employed as the circulation manager for the Des Moines Register in Waterloo.

Gordon is survived by a son, Dave Dunbar, of Olathe, Kan.; a daughter, Jane Baty, of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren; two brothers, Roger Dunbar of Elkhart, Ind., and Gale Dunbar of Wichita, Kan; and four sisters, June Davenport of Waterloo, Reva McMahon of Bolingbrook, Ill., Marcele Wald of Yuba City, Calif., and Joanne Clapper of Santa Ana, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Vera Chehok, Frances Funk and Jessie Graham.

VERNON V. MCLAUGHLIN SR.

BELMOND - Vernon V. McLaughlin Sr., 89, died Friday (Sept. 29, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice House, Mason City.

Vernon Vincent McLaughlin Sr., the son of William and Catherine (DeHeck) McLaughlin, was born Jan. 8, 1911, near Churchville in Warren County. He attended the Catholic school in Churchville until the family moved to Belmond in 1920. He graduated from the Belmond High School.

He was united in marriage to Mildred D. N. Lemke. They farmed in rural Belmond their entire life. After Mildred's death in 1989, Vernon continued to live on the farm until being hospitalized on Sept. 26, 2000, and died at the Muse Norris Hospice House in Mason City.

Vernon was active with the Catholic Order of Foresters and a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was a proud man with three great passions in life: his God, his farm and his family.

He leaves behind his beloved family to carry on and remember him with great love and admiration, three sons, one daughter, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: son, Vernon McLaughlin Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Belmond, and children, Dan McLaughlin, Mindy Gunderson and her husband, Gregg, and their children, Connor and Macy, Leslie Weisbrook and her husband, Scott; son, Richard McLaughlin and his wife, Mary, of Saginaw, Mich., and children, Ronald McLaughlin and his wife, Kathy, and their children, Michael and Ali, Jackie Strobel and her husband, John, and their children, Caitlin, Paige and Megan, and Scott McLaughlin; son, Paul McLaughlin and his wife, Shirley, of Belmond, and children, Shawna and Krystal; daughter, Barbara McLaughlin of Waverly and her son, Shane Edler. He is also survived by his brother, Jack McLaughlin of Belmond; sisters, Loyola Hocraffer of Clarion and Katherine Weber of Odessa, Wash., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Catherine McLaughlin; his wife, Mildred; two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Anthony McLaughlin; two sisters, Mary McLaughlin and Margaret Uthe; and five brothers, Eugene, Mike, William, Ed and Jim McLaughlin.

CLARION - Leona Tate, 59, died Sunday (Oct. 1, 2000) at the Israel Family Hospice in Ames.

ALVIN W. BARTHOLOMEW

MASON CITY - Alvin W. Bartholomew, 77, died Monday (Oct. 2, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by the Mason City Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. A Scripture wake service will begin at 6 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Alvin W. Bartholomew Memorial Fund.

Alvin was born July 31, 1923, in Waterloo, the son of Barney and Laura (LaTier) Bartholomew. He graduated from Boone High School and boxed in the Flyweight Division of Golden Gloves from 1939-41. He became a three-time Golden Glove Champion and was named the 1941 World Amateur Flyweight Champion.

After serving in the Navy from 1941 to 1945, he married Rosanna Herzog on Aug. 3, 1946, in Mason City, with whom he raised six children.

Alvin worked for Iowa Kemper Insurance where he served as assistant claims manager, retiring in 1985. After retirement he enjoyed golfing and time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City and a member of the VFW and American Legion. He also was a member of Highland Golf Course for 45 years. He also did volunteer work in preparing taxes for AARP.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Rosanna of Mason City; four sons, Craig (Karen) Bartholomew of Mason City, Terry (Theresa) Bartholomew of Waukee, Jeffrey (Kandee) Bartholomew of Mason City and Paul Bartholomew of Mason City; two daughters, Deborah (Robert) Ballantyne of Mason City and Wanda (Nicholas) Hodak of Mason City; one sister, Colleen (Robert) Wilbert of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren, Chad Bartholomew, Krista Bartholomew, Michelle Bartholomew, Lori Williams, Jenifer Smith, Julie Marlow, Frank Hodak, Noah Hodak, Nicolette Hodak, Ben Bartholomew, Jacob Bartholomew, Katee Bartholomew, Alicia Bartholomew, Tyler Bartholomew, Alex Bartholomew and Matthew Bartholomew; nine great grandchildren; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanda Reiter.

MASON CITY - Joseph P. Herman, 77, died Monday (Oct. 2, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason with military graveside honors by the Mason City Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Association.

Joseph P. Herman was born on April 12, 1923, in Garden City, Kan., the son of Nick and Rose (Shell) Herman. He received his education in a school in Garden City, Kan., and St. Joseph's School, Mason City.

He was inducted into the U. S. Army Air Corps, serving overseas during World War II.

Joseph was united in marriage to Gladys Meyer on May 29, 1954, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mason City. After their marriage Joseph continued his working career at Armour Foods in Mason City. During the period of time that Armour was building its new plant, Joseph worked as an assistant manager of Electrolux Appliance in Mason City until he returned to Armour.

Joseph loved fishing, hunting, camping, gardening and the great outdoors. He was very involved in bowling throughout Iowa and Wisconsin and was an Iowa Hawkeye and Notre Dame fan. He went to Canada fishing twice a year and took his family on vacations.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City and a lifetime member of the Mason City VFW and was a former chairman.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Gladys Herman of Mason City; his children, Stephen Herman and his wife, Judy, Paul Herman, Patrick Herman and Susan Sanchez and her husband, Stephen, all of Mason City; four grandchildren, Rachel and Robyn Herman and Christina and Brooke Sanchez, all of Mason City; two brothers, Clem Herman and his wife, Shirley, of Mason City, and Edward Herman and his wife, Margaret, of Escondido, Calif.; two sisters, Laurain Hennessey and her husband, Jack, of San Diego, Calif., and Vernie Beal and her husband, Paul, of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Janice Herman of Rockford; his special puppy, "Candy"; and other relatives and many friends.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Johnny and Robert.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Algona, with the Rev. Patrick O'Neal officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery, Algona.

ERMA ARLENE CUNNINGHAM

BELMOND - The funeral for Erma Arlene Cunningham, 81, of Belmond, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne DeVance officiating. Interment will be in the Immanuel Reformed Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Tenold Funeral Home in Belmond and one hour before services on Friday at the Church.

Memorials may be directed to the Erma Cunningham Memorial Fund.

Erma Arlene (Frohling) Cunningham, the daughter of Menno and Kate (Pals) Frohling, was born on Aug. 31, 1919, on a farm northeast of Belmond. Her early religious training and baptism were received at the Immanuel Reformed Church. She attended country school and graduated from Belmond High School.

On June 22, 1937, she was united in marriage to William Lloyd Cunningham at the Little Brown Church. To this union three children were born.

She was a homemaker and for 20 years worked with her husband at Lloyd's Body Shop. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She belonged to Culture Study Club and Eastern Star for more than 50 years.

Erma entered the Belmond Health Care Center, where she died on Tuesday (Oct. 3, 2000).

She is survived by her husband, Lloyd, of Belmond; sons, Marlan Cunningham and his wife, Karen, of Ankeny, and Kirk Cunningham and his wife, Cathy, of Urbandale; one daughter, Glenda Field and her husband, Larry, of Fairbanks, Alaska; six grandchildren, Lauri Moore and her husband, David, David Cunningham and his wife, Lisa, Elizabeth Cunningham, Sarah Cunningham, Derek Field, and Nathan Field; four great-grandchildren, Aerielle Field, Matthew Moore, Christopher Moore, and Shannon Cunningham; sisters, Mrs. Harry (Esther) Mennenga, of Belmond, and Mrs. Royce (Mildred) Tomson, of Fort Dodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, Mrs. Kenneth (Ruth) Jenison, in 1981.

ELIZABETH 'BETH' ALICE BLACKBURN

BRITT - Elizabeth "Beth" Alice Blackburn, 97, passed away Saturday (Sept. 30, 2000) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City. There will be no services at this time as she has donated her body to the University of Iowa.

Elizabeth "Beth" Alice Blackburn was born in Sterling, Colo., on April 3, 1903, the daughter of Fred and Martha Abraham.

Beth was married to J.C. (Swede) Blackburn on Aug. 20, 1924, in Smith Center, Kan. She was a graduate of Kearney Teachers College in Kearney, Neb., and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Nebraska until she married.

Beth and Swede moved from Campbell, Neb., to a farm near Earlham in 1939. In 1951 they bought a farm near Britt, and in 1964 they moved to their present farm north of Britt.

For a number of years, she taught in country schools and also in Woden and Algona. She also taught handicapped students in the Britt area. She received an associate of arts degree from Mason City Junior College in 1958.

She was a member of the Rebekah's and the Methodist Church. She loved gardening, fishing and the outdoors. Beth will be fondly remembered for her quick wit, driving ambition, love of adventure and passion for teaching.

Surviving are her husband, Swede, of Britt; two daughters, Marilynn Jo Tolley and her husband, Bill, of Cape May, N.J., and Beverlee Burnet, of Britt; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; four brothers; and her great-grandson, Ned Gibbons, in 1994.

ALGONA - William F. "Franny" Fitzgerald, 80, of Algona, died Wednesday (Oct. 4, 2000) at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery, with military graveside services by the V.F.W. Post No. 2541 and Hagg-Turner American Legion Post No. 90 of Algona.

MASON CITY - Vivian L. Weber, 84, of Mason City, died Wednesday (Oct. 4, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial service will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with the Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

LEONA JEAN TATE

CLARION - Leona Jean Tate, 59, of Clarion, died Sunday (Oct. 1, 2000) at the Israel Family Hospice Center in Ames.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, with the Rev. Gary Boen and the Rev. Craig Fitchley officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Clarion.

Leona Jean Tate was born on Nov. 18, 1940, to Arthur Anderson and Sylvia (Benson) Anderson at Clarion. Leona was raised and educated in the area of her birth and graduated from Clarion High School in 1958.

She married Luther Tate Jr. on May 5, 1962, at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion.

Leona was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Clarion and various ladies groups within the church, F.L.C.W. She was a volunteer for the Wright County Hospice and was taking continuing education credits toward food service supervisor at NIACC in Mason City.

She is survived by her husband, Luther; daughter, Jeanette Tate, of Ames; stepdaughter, Diane Gerjets and her husband, Doug, of Roland; granddaughter, Heather Nelson, of Roland; four sisters, Lucille Bloxhan, Agnes Hendrickson, June Shaw and Delores Reyna, from Clarion; and a brother, Gerald Anderson, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bernard Anderson; and sister, Patricia McFarland.
