HELEN HALFMAN

STACYVILLE - Helen Halfman, 96, died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at Stacyville Community Nursing Home in Stacyville.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Interment will be in Visitation Catholic Cemetery, Stacyville.

Friends may call from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Visitation Catholic Church Hall, Stacyville. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7. Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen was born July 10, 1904, in Riceville, the daughter of John and Susan (Lentz) Hartogh. She was educated in country school near New Haven.

Helen married George Halfman on Oct. 25, 1932, at Riceville. They farmed near Stacyville. She was employed at Farmers Produce in Osage and the Stacyville Community Nursing Home. George died on Dec. 31, 1976.

Helen was a member of Visitation Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers.

She is survived by one son, Jim Halfman and his wife, Jan, of Byron, Minn; four daughters, Irma Hamm of Charles City, Theresa Minard of La Porte City, Vera Walsh of Osage and Kathy Borchardt and her husband, Denny, of Mason City; one sister, Mary Koenig of Pontiac, Mich.; 34 grandchildren; and 66 great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; an infant son, George Jr.; a daughter, Mary Ann Popp; three sons-in-law, Ivan Walsh, Daryl Minard, and Leonard Hamm; three brothers, Ben Hartogh, Mike Hartogh and Peter Hartogh; and four sisters, Katie Hartogh, Frances Grube, Agnes Kramer and Barbara Koenig.

CHARLES CITY - Marian M. (Mrs. Hollis) Cross, 77, of No. 5 Cedar Terrace South, and formerly of Floyd, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital, Charles City.

MARY A. BEYER

MASON CITY - Mary A. Beyer, 93, of 843 Sixth St. S.W., died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania, Mason City, with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City. Visitation will resume one hour before the service at the church Tuesday.

Mary A. Beyer was born March 21, 1907, in Floyd, the daughter of Milo W. and Emma (Perrin) Raymond. She graduated from Floyd High School and Hamilton School of Business in Mason City.

On March 21, 1931, she was united in marriage with Arthur L. Beyer in Jesup. They lived on a farm near Manly until moving to Mason City in 1955. She joined Wesley United Methodist Church at that time and became active in women's circles as well as teaching Sunday school for several years. In 1965 she went to work in Central Supply at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital. She retired in 1972.

Mary was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, church circles and Church Women United. She volunteered at the information desk at North Iowa Medical Center for more than 3000 hours. Mary liked knitting and tatting. She especially enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Mary is survived by two sons, Raymond Beyer and his wife, Lois, Belmond, and Roger Beyer and his wife, Nina, Las Vegas, Nev.; a daughter, Jean Carman, Nevada; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola Rae Lee, Inglewood, Calif.; and sisters-in-law, Helen Christensen, Mason City, and Selma Beyer, Northwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Donald, Floyd and Kenneth; a sister, Darlene; and a son-in-law, Everett Carman.

MELODIE A. KINSLEY

MASON CITY - Melodie A. Kinsley, 48, of 616 S. Carolina Ave., passed away Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) from injuries received in an auto accident.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Belmond with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating.

Visitation with the family present will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, and will resume one hour prior to the services at the church Tuesday.

Melodie, the daughter of Irwin "Irv" and Donna Masters Kinsley, was born June 8, 1952, in Battle Creek, Mich. She was raised and attended schools in the Battle Creek area of Michigan. Melodie graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1970. She then attended nursing school at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich., graduating in 1973.

Following graduation from nursing school, she was employed as a nurse in various areas in the Midwest, settling in Mason City in 1990. Melodie graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake in 1995 and recently graduated with honors from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. She was currently pursuing her master's degree at St. Mary's University in Rochester, Minn.

Melodie was dedicated to volunteering her time at North Iowa Humane Society in Mason City where she was currently a board member. She was also a member of the MENSA Society.

Melodie is survived by her parents, Irwin "Irv" and Donna Kinsley of Belmond; two sisters, Jeanette and her husband, Dr. Ronald Schwab, of Standish, Mich., and Jane Schor of Tucson, Ariz.; three brothers, Charles and his wife, Cydney Kinsley, of Standwood, Mich., Edward and his wife, Julie Kinsley, of Spencer, and Bryan Kinsley of Lake Villa, Ill.; three nephews, Jeff and John Schwab and David and his wife, Amy Anselm; six nieces, Jessica and her husband, Mark Roelfsema, Amy Kinsley, Angela Kinsley, Mia Kinsley, Abby Schwab and Beth and her husband, Erick Ladorecky. She is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

MABEL M. JOHNSON

BRITT - Mabel M. Johnson, 85, died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Britt, with the Rev. Robert Dodge officiating. He will be assisted by Deacon Tom Haan of the Catholic Diocese of Tulsa, Okla. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Cataldo Funeral Home, Britt, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Mabel Martha Johnson, the daughter of Dick and Martha (Dahlman) Spieker, was born Oct. 3, 1915, on a farm in Bingham Township in Hancock County. She attended school at Bingham Township School No. 7 and worked for a number of families as a mother's helper.

On Dec. 27, 1944, she was married to Frank L. Johnson at Britt. They made their home at Carlisle, Pa., until Frank's discharge from the service. They returned to Iowa and lived in Garner for 10 years and in 1955 moved to Britt.

Mabel was a homemaker and worked several years as a school cook. She enjoyed her family, crafts, quilting, flower gardening, fishing and card playing.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, UMW, Rebekah Lodge, American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries, Britt Senior Citizens and King's Daughters. Mabel was also a Girl Scout Leader.

She is survived by her two daughters, Janice Kay Haan and her husband, Charles, of Stillwater, Okla., and Janet Fay Soboroff and her husband, Stephen, of Iowa City; four grandchildren, Patricia Haan, Christopher Haan, his wife, Rie, and their children, Katrina and Daniel, Pamela Haan and Shane Soboroff; and a sister-in-law, Hattie Spieker of Britt.

Mabel was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, May 22, 1995; parents; three brothers, Martin, Lawrence and Jerry Spieker; five sisters, Della Foerstch, Adeline Spieker, Helen Spieker, Mary Lassahn and Anna Hillenga; and an infant brother.

NICHOLAS ROSS SOLBERG

JOHNSTON - Nicholas Ross Solberg, 5, of 8501 Northwest 54th Ave, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Mercy Hospice of Johnston of a brain tumor.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Grimes. Burial will be in Sunny Hill Cemetery, Grimes.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Caldwell Raddatz Hickman Chapel, Urbandale.

Nicholas Ross Solberg was born in Des Moines but lived in Grimes from 1995 to 1999.

He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Grimes. He attended two years of the Early Childhood Program of Grimes Elementary School. He had a great love of computers and all sports, especially NASCAR racing.

Nicholas is survived by his father and mother, Craig and Michelle Solberg, Johnston; paternal grandparents, Marvin and Lucille Solberg, Floyd; maternal grandparents, William D. and Lorraine Martens, Winterset; 16 aunts and uncles; and 17 cousins.

ELMER WILLIAM BOYKEN

TITONKA - Elmer William Boyken, 78, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at the Titonka Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Titonka, with the Rev. Merlin Norris officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Titonka.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka.

Elmer William Boyken was born on Feb. 16, 1922, on a farm near Woden to Eilert and Lottie Mayland Boyken. He was baptized and confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Titonka. Elmer received his education in the country school systems in Winnebago and Kossuth counties. After his schooling, Elmer helped his parents on the family farm northeast of Titonka.

On Oct. 9, 1947, Elmer was married to Margie Bruns at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Titonka. Elmer's parents retired from the farm and moved into Titonka. Elmer and Margie then moved on the home place and farmed there until 1988 when Elmer retired and he and Margie moved into Titonka. After his retirement, Elmer enjoyed assisting his sons with the farm operation.

Elmer was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, where he had served two terms as First Deacon and one term as treasurer. He also taught Sunday school and was a member of the Men's Brotherhood, where he enjoyed playing dartball and softball. Elmer loved watching all sports and was an avid bowler and golfer. In 1992 Elmer bowled a perfect 300 game.

Elmer became a resident of the Titonka Care Center on Sept. 29, 2000. He died there on Saturday, Oct. 14, at the age of 78.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Margie, Titonka; three sons, Arvid Boyken and his wife, Sheri, Buffalo Center, Gary Boyken and his wife, Diane, Titonka, and Eldean Boyken and his wife, Dana, Meridian, Miss.; six grandchildren, Amber, Daniel, Stephanie, Ashley, Victoria and Kyle Boyken; three step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Paul Walker and Brad Culbertson; and many cousins and friends.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

MERRILL LEE HACKBARTH

CLEAR LAKE - Merrill Lee Hackbarth, 78, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Center, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Interment will be at Coulter Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Home.

Merrill Lee Hackbarth was born Jan. 15, 1922, at Fort Dodge, the son of Lee and Esther (Duesenberg) Hackbarth. When he was 6 months old the family moved to Wellsburg where they resided for 13 years. In 1935 the family moved to Dows where Merrill graduated from high school in 1939.

Merrill enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard on Nov. 5, 1942, during World War II. He served as a gunners mate 2/class aboard a Coast Guard cutter which patrolled the Atlantic Ocean for German submarines. During the spring of 1945 the cutter was transferred to the central Pacific where Merrill saw action against the Japanese during the fierce air and sea battle at Okinawa. He received his honorable discharge in March of 1946.

He had enrolled at Iowa State University in Ames prior to enlisting in the Coast Guard and now returned to earn a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics. While attending Iowa State, Merrill became a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.

Merrill married Pauline (Polly) Horn on July 23, 1947, at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Coulter.

He became General Manager of the Osage Coop Elevator at Osage in 1950. While living at Osage he was a member of the Osage Rotary Club and the American Legion and served as a trustee of our Savior's Lutheran Church. In 1958 he became General Manager of the Sanborn Co-op Grain Co., at Sanborn.

Merrill became account executive with T. C. Henderson & Co. of Des Moines in 1965 at their Mason City office. He and his wife and their two children moved to Clear Lake. When Piper, Jaffray & Hopwood of Minneapolis purchased Henderson's in 1970, he remained in the same position in the same office. He worked as a commodity and stockbroker for 25 years before retiring in 1990.

After working with markets and marketing most of his adult life, Merrill continued to follow and study markets throughout his retirement. He was an avid sports fan and never grew tried of listening to big band music. He and his wife, Polly, also enjoyed traveling and their travels covered every state in the lower 48.

Merrill is survived by his wife, Pauline of Clear Lake; a daughter, Laurie Ohmart and her husband, Tom, of West Des Moines; a son, Hal and his wife, Lori Hackbarth, of Clear Lake; two sisters, Leola Holmes of Dows and Mavis Davies of St. Louis, Mo.; one granddaughter, Olivia Hope Hackbarth of Clear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

COULTER - Esther Elizabeth Lindsay, 96, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Belmond Hospital.

WILBUR EUGENE SCHMOLL

CLEAR LAKE - Wilbur Eugene Schmoll, 73, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly with the Rev. Dennis Ganz and Jack Musker officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and visitation will continue one hour prior to the service time Tuesday at the church.

The family of Wilbur Eugene Schmoll has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Wilbur Eugene Schmoll Memorial Fund.

Wilbur was born on July 27, 1927, in rural Clear Lake, the son of Charley and Frances (Knaak) Schmoll. He received his education in the Clear Lake school system, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1944. After completing his schooling he farmed with his father on the family Century Farm.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1950 and served his country honorably until his discharge in 1952. After his honorable discharge he returned to the farm, and in 1961 he joined his father in the Schmoll Insurance Agency, where he was a Cerro Gordo Mutual Ins. Agent and Iowa Mutual Tornado Insurance Agent out of West Des Moines.

He was united in marriage to Lee Jane Huffman on April 21, 1973, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He was a life member of Am Vets, American Legion and a charter member of Clear Lake Evening Lions. He was on the board of directors of Cerro Gordo Mutual Ins., past vice president of Cerro Gordo Mutual Ins., board member Farmers Co-op Gas and Oil in Mason City, and secretary of Drainage District 40 since 1975 and North Iowa Fair member.

Wilbur loved and enjoyed living in Clear Lake.

Wilbur is survived by his wife, Lee Jane Schmoll of the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center; three stepsons, Randall Davis of Clear Lake, Robert Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Richard Davis of Oklahoma City; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Merlyn Schmoll and his wife, Lois, of Lake Mills; two nephews, Jack Ray Schmoll and his wife, Barbara, of Wilton, and Henry Dean Schmoll and his wife, Barbara, of Marion; his good friends, Arvid and Dixie Matson and Roger and Cheryl Deike, all of Clear Lake; and his best friend, Sam.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

FOREST CITY - Martin Nielsen, 81, formerly of Forest City, a resident of Mission, Texas, died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Briarcliff Care Center, Mission, Texas.

BELMOND - Donald L. Thompson, 76, of Belmond, died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines.

DUMONT - Dena Kielman, 100, of Dumont, died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

EARL L. 'BUTCH' FULLMER

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. - Earl L. "Butch" Fullmer, 63, of Prairie du Chien, died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born May 10, 1937, in Antioch, Calif., the son of Earl and Myrtle (Cook) Fullmer. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 12 years.

He married Charlene Manwill on June 19, 1956, in Reno, Nev. Together they owned and operated a restaurant in Charles City, and later owned the Lynxville Fishing Float for nine years. Following this they owned and operated The Red Cedar Restaurant in McGregor for nine years.

Butch was the first employee hired by the Miss Marquette Casino, where he worked as the executive chef until 1998. He was a member of the Zor Temple Shriners.

He is survived by his wife, Charlene, of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; one son, Earl G. (Diana) Fullmer, of Prairie du Chien, Wis.; two daughters, Tracy Fullmer, of Dubuque and Cynthia (David) Hillson, of Mooresville, N.C.; one sister, Earlyne Hakola, of McKinneyville, Calif.; his father, Earl J. Fullmer, of Fortuna, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Prairie du Chien, Wis., with the Rev. E. Raymond Sims officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.

LUCILLE MARIE 'LUCY' WILSON

VENTURA - Lucille Marie (Lucy) Wilson, 80, 102 Weimer St. in Ventura, died Monday (Oct. 16, 2000) at her residence in Ventura.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Paul Hasel of the Ventura United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

The family suggest memorials to the Lucille Marie Wilson Memorial fund.

Lucy was born Oct. 15, 1920, in Miller, the daughter of Carl and Marie (Quandt) Kluseman. She attended school in Miller.

Lucy worked for her uncle Bill Kluseman in his bar-restaurant called Bill's Place in Ventura.

She married Henry (Hank) Wilson Oct. 17, 1948, in Mason City. They later purchased her uncle's bar and named it Hank and Lucy's, which she continued to operate right up to her time of death. Lucy never had any children of her own, but was known as grandmother to a lot of people.

In 1989 Lucy was grand marshal of the Septemberfest celebration in Ventura. She enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing cards and, especially, having her friends stop in and visit with her.

Lucy is survived by two brothers-in-law, Bill Wilson and his wife, Elsie, of Ventura, and Jim Wilson, of Clear Lake; one sister-in-law, Marie Homawn, of Ventura; and her special friends, Margaret Spilman, of Clear Lake, and Donna and Norma Flusek, of Ventura, and Georgia Ashland, of Clear Lake; and a host of friends.

AMES - Robert L. Bourne, 67, of Ames, died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) of a cerebral hemorrhage at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Ames, with the Rev. Larry D. LaVelle officiating. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery in Ames.

A memorial for music education in Iowa is being set up in his memory.

Robert L. Bourne was born July 23, 1933, in Ames, the son of Everett and Martha Zoe (Wilson) Bourne. He received a bachelor of arts degree in music from the University of Northern Iowa and a master of arts degree in music education from the University of Northern Colorado. He was a band director in Charles City, Audubon and Rockwell. After retirement he continued to teach at St. Cecilia Parochial School and continued judging instrumental music competitions.

Robert was united in marriage to Marjorie Thompson on Dec. 19, 1955.

He served as president of Southwest Iowa Bandmasters Association and founded the SWIBA Sight-Reading Clinic and was presented the Karl L. King distinguished service award for (active) member in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

He was a member of the American School Band Directors Association, the National Band Masters Association, the Iowa Band Masters Association, the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association and various local organizations. He was a devoted bandmaster.

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Ames; two daughters, Barb Christensen and her husband, John, of Middleton, Wis., and Kathy Musser and her husband, Marty, of Madrid; one son, Jeff Bourne and his wife, Kris, of Woodbridge, Va.; one sister, Judy Thomas, of Ames; six grandchildren, Samantha and Elizabeth Bourne, Kelci and Tyler Christensen and Jacob and Abigail Musser.

DOUGHERTY - John Paul Devereux, 58, of Postville, formerly of Dougherty, died on Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at his home in Postville.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dougherty, with the Rev. Leo Riley officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post No. 354 of Dougherty.

John was born April 10, 1942, in rural Dumont, the son of Paul and Bernice (O'Brien) Devereux. He graduated from St. Patrick's Catholic High School in Dougherty in 1961.

John entered the United States Army in 1966, serving during the Vietnam War and then receiving his honorable discharge after serving in Germany. He was employed as a truck driver for many years. John enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time.

John is survived by one daughter, Mariah, of Madison, Wis.; two sisters and their spouses, Kathleen and Leroy Milligan, of Charles City, and Maurita and Doug Penn, of Marion; and five brothers and their spouses, Bill and Donna Devereux, of Hampton, Alex and Shirley Devereux, of Norway, Terry and Sue Devereux, of Walker, Pat and Jean Devereux, of Oxford, and Bernard and Linda Devereux, of Longmont, Colo.

John was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Donovan.

MELVIN R. CLARK

ROCKWELL - Melvin R. Clark, 87, of 607 E. Main, Rockwell, died peacefully surrounded by his family, Sunday night, (Oct. 15, 2000) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Rockwell First United Methodist Church. Interment will be at the Rockwell Cemetery.

Melvin was born on May 1, 1913, at Sheffield, one of two sons of Raymond and Laura (Hunt) Clark. He graduated from the Rockwell-Swaledale schools and then worked at the Rockwell Creamery from 1932 until 1948.

He then performed custodial work at the school until his retirement in 1978. He was always ready with a smile and encouraging word for the many students during his 30 years there.

On Oct. 20, 1934, he was united in marriage to Deana L. Nelson at Sheffield. To this union were born two children. Melvin was very active in community volunteer work and gave his best at the church where he was financial secretary and usher for many, many years. Melvin was proud of the Lions Club and was often the top salesman for the annual light bulb sales.

He enjoyed his gardening, especially his raspberry patch. Melvin also enjoyed playing in various card clubs with his wife. In the winter, Melvin and Deana looked forward to traveling to Arizona.

The family would also like to thank the Rockwell Community Nursing Home for its outstanding care and compassion that was extended to Melvin and Deana.

Those thankful for sharing Melvin's rich life include his wife, Deana, of Rockwell; one daughter, Sharon and her husband, Richard Sawyer, of St. Paul, Minn.; one son, Kenneth and his wife, Karen Clark, of Burchinal; five grandchildren, Lisa and Suzanne Sawyer, Timothy and Kim Marie Clark and Kathy Luther; and four great-grandchildren.

STORY CITY - Ethel F. Emmons, 93, of Rochester, Minn., formerly of Story City and Kanawha, died Monday (Oct. 16, 2000) at the Bethany Samaritan Home on 8th in Rochester, Minn.

Ethel was born on May 4, 1907, in rural Story City, the daughter of Lewis and Mamie (Hermanson) Townswick. She taught English and was principal of the high school in Emmons, Minn., for five years before her marriage to M. Herbert Emmons.

She was united in marriage to M. Herbert Emmons on June 30, 1935, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Story City. She and her husband operated a grocery store in Kanawha for 32 years, moving to Story City in 1967 and then to Rochester in 1990. She was an active member in the community and church.

She is survived by two sons, Lewis and his wife, Lynda Emmons, of Seattle, Wash., and David and his wife, Cathy Emmons, of Edina, Minn.; a daughter, Nadine and her husband, Alan Anderson, of Rochester, Minn.; five grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Elvina Townswick, of Story City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, Myrtle Olson, Lillian Olson and Hazel Jacobson; and two brothers, Jeffrey and Richard Townswick.

BELMOND - Donald L. Thompson, 76, of Belmond died Sunday (Oct. 15, 2000) at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Des Moines.

Memorial graveside services for Donald Thompson will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Belmond Cemetery with Paul Christensen, Commander of the Belmond V.F.W., officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Donald, the son of Richard and Matilda Sjoberg Thompson, was born June 4, 1924, in Belmond. He grew up in the Belmond area where he attended school and graduated from high school.

Donald entered the United States Army in March of 1943 and served as an Automatic Rifleman during World War II. He participated in various battles in the European Theatre. Donald was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart. He returned home in 1945.

After returning home, Donald was employed at Tomco Seed and worked as a painter.

Donald was united in marriage with Betty Hobbs on July 26, 1974, in Canton, S.D. The couple made their home in Belmond where Don continued to paint, retiring in 1980.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Donald is survived by his wife, Betty; one daughter, Donna Thompson of Cedar Rapids; one stepdaughter, Deborah Mantia of Wheaton, Ill.; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Cortney; three great-grandchildren; stepmother, Helen Nelson of Belmond; one sister, Anita and her husband, Gerald Whipple, of Belmond; three brothers, William and his wife, Dorothy, of Mason City, Duan and his wife, Linda, of Belmond, and Jack and his wife, Marlys, of Mesa, Ariz.

Harry K. Wyatt, son of Harry Gibson and Eva (Kline) Wyatt, was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Enterprise, Miss. He received his early education in Gulfport, Miss. and graduated from high school in Morrison, Ill. Following high school he attended Brown's Business College.

During his years in Sterling he owned and operated Bradley's Mens Clothing Store. In retirement he continued to work part time in the men's department of Bergner's in Sterling, Ill.

He was a 60-year member of the First United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of Rotary International, a past president of the Sterling Rotary chapter, and a former member of the Downtown Merchants Association, and a former member of the Rock River Country Club.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Judy Wyatt Dunker and her husband, R. Bruce, of Mason City; grandchildren, Lisa M. Shivers of White Stone, Va., Tyler W. Dunker of Des Moines, Jill R. Boswell of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Stephen B. PLYMOUTH - Edward Bernhardt, 80, of Plymouth, died Monday (Oct. 16, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Edward was born June 20, 1920, in Titonka, the son of Fred and Mary (Smieder) Bernhardt. He was united in marriage to Violet Gedville on Jan. 24, 1942, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

Edward entered into the United States Army on Aug. 5, 1942, and served as an Airplane Armorer Gunner during World War II. He was honorably discharged on July 23, 1945, after receiving 12 Bronze Stars, and an Air Medal, a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Good Conduct Medal.

Edward returned to the Plymouth area to farm, which he did until his retirement. For 15 years he was an avid fisherman at the cabin he and Violet shared at Lake Kabetogama.

Edward is survived by his wife, Violet, of Plymouth; three sons, David Bernhardt and his wife, Jeanne, of Plymouth, Daryl Bernhardt of Del City, Okla., and Mark Bernhardt and his wife, Shirley, of Auburn, Mich.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred Bernhardt and his wife, Betty, of Mason City; and one sister, Ruth Christiansen and her husband, Clyndon, of Manly.

KENSETT - Obert J. Hogen, 79, of Kensett, died Tuesday (Oct. 17, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church in rural Kensett, with the Rev. Selmer G. Hernes officiating. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Cemetery in rural Kensett, with military graveside honors by Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 677.

Obert J. Hogen was born on Nov. 1, 1920, in Kensett, to Truman and Florence (Peterson) Hogen. He married Lucille Moen on Feb. 3, 1946, in Page, N.D. They were married for 54 years. They farmed in the Kensett area for more than 50 years. He worked at Northwood Sale Barn and helped out at various auctions and 4-H sales.

He was a member of the Elk Creek Lutheran Church and served on the building committee when the educational unit was built. He also served on the church council.

Obert served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He returned from the war a highly decorated veteran. His decorations and citations include four over Seas service bars, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, one Silver Battle Star and Bronze Arrowhead, Good Conduct Medal, and WWII Victory Medal.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one grandson, Michael.

Survivors include his wife, Liddy, of Kensett; two daughters, Wendy Mallo and her husband, Larry, of Mason City, and Carol Hogen, of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Orv Hogen and his wife, Sharon, of Mankato, Minn. and Paul Hogen, of Northwood; three brothers, Arnold P. Hogen, of Northwood, Marvin Hogen, of Arkansas, and Donald Hogen, of Northwood; one sister, Deloris Banken, of Forest City; and eight grandchildren.

NORTHWOOD - Earl Wayne Orman, 86, of Northwood, died on Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2000) at his home in Northwood.

Earl was born in Hayes County, Neb., on May 28, 1914, to John and Gladys (Jackson) Orman. He attended school in Nebraska. In 1929 he moved with his family to Deer Creek Township in Worth County.

On Nov. 9, 1946, Earl was united in marriage to Elaine Anderson. They had three children, Carol, Darryl and Nancy.

He was a farmer all his life until retirement in 1979, when he moved to Northwood. After he came to Northwood, he worked for a short time at Village Florist and Continental Grain Co. before working for several years at the Northwood Country Club.

He was a long-time member of Deer Creek Lutheran Church in Carpenter. He was baptized and confirmed there in 1934 by Pastor Olaf Langhaugh. He held different positions on the board and was chairman when they purchased the parsonage.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Ella; one daughter, Carol Levine; four brothers, Ralph, Ivan, Loyal and Gerald; two sisters, Aletha Holmes and Pauline Rasmussen; two half brothers, David and Delbert Orman; two stepsisters, Ethelmae Rasmussen and Violet Heard.

Earl is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Northwood; one son, Darryl Orman, of York, Pa.; one daughter, Nancy and her husband, Phil Cooper, of Glenville, Minn.; son-in-law, Wayne Levine, of Owatonna, Minn.; grandchildren, Derrick and Shannon Orman and their two children, Nathan, Danielle and Devin Cooper.

LATIMER - Marguerite "Marge" M. DeSotel, 87, of Latimer, died Monday (Oct. 16, 2000) at the Hampton Care Center in Hampton.

Marguerite Murrie Palmer was born on Sept. 6, 1913, at Eagle, Neb., the daughter of Dr. Carson and Kathryn (Zapf) Palmer. She attended school in Cassville, Wis., Hull, Iowa, and Guttenberg, where she graduated from St. Mary High School in 1931.

Marguerite received her bachelor of arts degree in music from Clarke College in Dubuque in 1935. She was a member of the Presidents Circle at Clarke College and played in the Guttenberg Girls Band at Guttenberg.

On Oct. 12, 1938, Marguerite was united in marriage with George J. DeSotel at St. Mary Church in Guttenberg. To this union three children were born, LeNae, Lynn and Lou.

Marguerite and George moved to a farm at Dows in 1940, where she helped with field work and keeping the books. In 1972, they moved to Latimer, where she had been a member of the Latimer Park Society and the 500 Club, which met at the Latimer Golf Club house.

Marguerite loved to read and play cards. They spent many winters in Texas and Arizona.

Marguerite is survived by her husband, George, of Latimer; daughter, LeNae and her husband, Bill McNulty, of Williamsburg; sons, Lynn and his wife, Mary, of Dows and Lou and his wife, Norie, of Tulsa, Okla.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her stepmother, Marguerite Palmer, of Guttenberg.

Ruth M. Booth was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Clarion, the daughter of Elso and Ruth Mae Steenblock. She attended schools in Belmond. She lived in the Clarion area until she was married.

She was united in marriage to Gerald L. Booth Sr. on July 11, 1945, in Mason City. They made their home in Mason City until recently moving to Garner to live at the Concord Care Center.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Booth Sr., of Garner; one son, Gerald Booth Jr. and his wife, Kay, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughters, Carol Davis and her husband, Gary, of Rock Falls, and Linda Johnson and her husband, David, of Blue Springs, Mo.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Minnie Harms, of Belmond.

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Long-time Mason City resident and former city employee Lloyd Devens died Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) in Apache Junction.

Services were held Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, at his residence. Hospice of the Valley officiated.

He was born Sept. 12, 1928, in Mankato, Minn. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and the Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Apache Junction; daughter, Tamara Hocker, of Bend, Ore.; sons, Brad, of Ramsey, Minn, David, of Groton, Conn., and Scott, of Mankato, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandson; two sisters; and one brother.

He was preceded in death by one son, Gregory; his parents; and a brother.

HENRIETTA STOFFER

SHEFFIELD - Funeral services for Henrietta Stoffer, 96, of Sheffield, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home in Sheffield, with the Rev. Janet Wearda officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 until 11 a.m. Saturday before services at the funeral home.

Henrietta Stoffer was born on Dec. 28, 1903 in Scott Township, Franklin County, Iowa to Herman and Etta Dirksen Pastour. Henrietta was raised in the Alexander and Belmond area and worked for various people following her education.

On Jan. 27, 1926, she married Joe R. Stoffer at Hampton, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Dows and Westfork area before moving to the Sheffield area. Henrietta worked as a cook in Sheffield and Hampton in various cafes, hospitals and nursing homes. She also worked as a wallpaper hanger.

Henrietta enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, tatting, working with crafts and making dolls, traveling and driving her car which she did until age 92.

Henrietta entered the Sheffield Care Center in June of 1997 and died there on Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at the age of 96.

Survivors include her son, Larry and his wife, Julie, of Marietta, Ga.; and her daughter, Laura Schroeder and her husband, Edward, of Hampton; eight grandchildren, Teresa Yelland and her husband, Jeff, Craig Steele and his wife, Rawnene, Kim Wright and her husband, Joel, Tracey Schroeder and his wife, Debbie, Trent Schroeder and his wife, Emily, Jennifer Schroeder, David Stoffer and his wife, Becky and Laurie Smith and her husband, Simon; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Yelland, Ananda Steele, Kaleb Wright and Lauren Stoffer.

Henrietta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1965; her daughter and son-in-law, Gladys and Bob Steele; and two brothers.

MASON CITY - Bernice M. Hubbard, 81, of Mason City, died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at her home.

Bernice was born on Feb. 19, 1919 in Mason City, the daughter of John and Mary (Boda) Oleskey. She graduated from Holy Family High School in 1937 and then from Hamilton Business College.

Bernice was united in marriage to Dale Hubbard in Princeton, Mo. on April 6, 1942. She worked for many years in the offices at Decker's and Standard Oil in Mason City and Oscar Meyer in Chicago, Ill.

Bernice enjoyed playing cards, dancing, traveling, working in the yard, playing with her dog, Mason, and spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and the Women of the Mason City Moose Lodge.

After a full life and 58 years of marriage, Bernice has gone to be with the angels.

Bernice is survived by her husband, Dale, of Mason City; two daughters, Julie Hubbard Kahler and her husband, Frank, of West Des Moines, and Ann Hubbard Miller and her husband, Rick, of Mason City; one son, Fred Hubbard and his wife, Cynthia, of Marshalltown; eight grandchildren, Bob Olsen, Cal Olsen, and Penny Olsen, all of Mason City, Dana Hubbard and Scott Hubbard, both of Marshalltown, James Hubbard, of Prescott, Ariz., John Kahler and Amy Kahler Seiler and her husband, Rob, all of West Des Moines; two stepgrandchildren, Jeremy Miller and Kelly Miller, both of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Madison Seiler and August Brandon Olsen; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Jeremy Ryan Miller.

John enjoyed his yard work, hunting, fishing, and being with his family.

He will be greatly missed by one daughter, Judy Hawley and her husband, Marlin, of Mason City; two sons, Roger Schueler and his wife, Caryn, of Ottawa, Ill. and Michael Schueler and his wife, Charlene, of Waukee; one daughter-in-law, Pat Schueler, of Ottawa, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Stella Willard, of Waterloo and Frances Hammond, of Swea City.

MASON CITY - Willis B. Colville, 79, of 702 First St. S.E., died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave. with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with Flag folding rites conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Willis was born July 29, 1921 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of John E. and Luva (Taylor) Colville. He graduated from the UNI High School in Cedar Falls, received his B.A. degree from the University of Northern Iowa, M.A. degree from the University of Iowa and continued to work on his doctorate degree.

Willis married Kathryn Luwe on Dec. 24, 1943 in Wellsburg, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII in the South Pacific.

Willis was a teacher-coach in the Mason City School District for 31 years, retiring in 1985. He was Mason City High School's first swimming coach starting the boys program in 1963 and the girls program in 1971. During his tenure, his teams won numerous conference and district titles, two state championships and three of his swimmers were named All-American.

He was named to manage the Mason City Municipal Pool in 1969 and in 1972 started the Mason City Swim Club. He was installed into the Iowa High School Swimming Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987.

He was past chairman of the Iowa AAU Association, two-time coach of the year, served on the Mason City Park and Recreation Board for six years, a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he had been chairman of the Board of Trustees.

He was also a member of the Evening Lions, enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, and golf.

Willis is survived by his wife, Kathryn A. Colville, of Mason City; daughter, Jonna L. Wagar and her husband, Wayne, of Marshalltown, Iowa; two sons, William G. Colville and his wife, Virginia, of Colfax, and Robert C. Colville and his wife, Deborah, of Mason City; grandchildren, Melinda L. Wagar-Mallie and her husband, Andre, Amy A. Wagar, Benjamin J.S. Wagar, Felicia Anthony, Ellen Colville, Carly Ann Colville, Willa Diane Colville, John C. Colville, Jillian S. Colville, Alyssa L. Colville, Tammy L. Pritchard, Heather M. Countryman and Jeremiah Culp; two great-grandchildren, Andre and Austin; and one sister, Bertha B. Jepsen and her husband, Myron, of Cedar Falls.
