LAKOTA - Dale Patterson, 74, of Lakota, died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at home.

RICEVILLE - Lula Eliza Dana, 100, of Riceville, died Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at the Riceville Community Resthome.

MARIE HELEN DOUGHAN

BRITT - Marie Helen Doughan, 97, of Britt, passed away Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

The funeral for Marie Doughan will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with Father Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery near Britt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour before services on Thursday at the church. There will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a parish wake service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

Marie Helen Doughan was born May 4, 1903, in Carroll, to Albert and Catherine (Skalla) Yegge. She moved with her parents to a farm near Wesley, where she attended parochial and country school.

On Jan. 23, 1923, she was united in marriage to Raymond Doughan at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley.

They bought a farm in the Stilson area, where they lived 40 years. After retiring from farming in 1962, they moved to Britt. Ray passed away on April 13, 1976.

Marie was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, where she belonged to the Rosary Guild. She also belonged to the Silver Stars, Ever Ready Club, Jolly Dozen Club since 1930, Hospital Auxiliary and was County Seal Chairman for the Lung Association for seven years.

Marie enjoyed her flowers, crocheting, cards, dancing and doing for others.

Marie is survived by two daughters, Donna and her husband, Raymond Nelson, of Clear Lake, and Shirley Ann Sallade, of Bloomington, Ill.; two sons, Gene and his wife, Bonnie Doughan, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., and Allan and his wife, Frances Doughan, of Britt; and one daughter-in-law, Marcella Doughan, of Algona; one sister, Lucille Townsend and her husband, Marvin, of Winterset; one brother-in-law, L.H. Ludwig and his wife, Gwen, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 26 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray, in 1976; and three children, Charlotte, Larry and Dale; two sisters, Florence and Pauline; three brothers, Leo, Frank and Albert; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

DALLAS 'VERN' MEEHAN

MASON CITY - Dallas "Vern" Meehan, 90, of 14784 Thrush Ave. in Mason City, died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating.

Visitation will be one hour before services on Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Dallas "Vern" Meehan was born Oct. 22, 1909, in Hampton, the son of James S. and Eunice E. (Dawson) Meehan.

He is survived by one daughter, LaVerna Smedley, of Mason City; and one brother, Arley Meehan, of Nora Springs.

He was preceded in death by his infant brother, one infant son, parents, wife and sister.

IDAH CHARLOTTE BAKKEN

ALGONA - The funeral for Idah Charlotte Bakken, 84, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona, with Pastor Steven Turner and Pastor Patrick O'Neal officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Lakota.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona.

Idah Charlotte Bakken was born on Sept. 22, 1916, at Lakota, to Jakob and Mary Elizabeth Bloom Telkamp. Idah graduated from Ledyard High School in 1934. She enjoyed music and played the clarinet in the band during her high school years.

Idah met her first husband, Cort Rippentrop, at a church function and they were married on April 5, 1937, at the home farm place at Lakota. Idah worked as a clerk at a hardware store in Lakota for 12 years and Cort worked as a mechanic. Cort died on Oct. 6, 1958, and some years later she met F.L. Bakken through a friend and was married on May 20, 1961 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple lived in Bode, where F.L. worked for Humboldt County and Idah worked at Graham Hardware in Algona.

Idah's hobbies included knitting, crocheting and sewing. In her free time she enjoyed fishing. F.L. and Idah had a trailer and went on many trips to Sioux City to visit their daughter, Marilyn. The couple also enjoyed many trips to the Black Hills and Missouri.

Idah enjoyed playing cards and belonged to a 500 club while living in Bode. In later years, Idah played cards nightly while living at Maple Park Apartments.

Idah was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Lakota before joining Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona. Idah was also a member of the American Legion Auxillary in Lakota, where she served as president. Idah also belonged to the church circle.

Idah died on Sunday morning (Oct. 8, 2000) at the Algona Manor Care Center at the age of 84.

Survivors include her children, Corinne Shirk and her husband, Larry, of Lake Mills, Sandra Armstrong and her husband, Robert, of Buffalo Center, Marilyn Wiltgen and her husband, Richard, of Spirit Lake, and Linda Minton and special friend, Dennis Brosh, of Estherville; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; twin sister, Adah Rippentrop, of Titonka; and daughter-in-law, Judy Rippentrop, of Kansas City, Mo.

Idah was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Cort Rippentrop and Florenus Bakken; one son, Roger; one infant son; one infant daughter; and two sons-in-law.

GARNER - Duane Sonquist, 65, of Garner, died Sunday (Oct. 8, 2000) at his home.

The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, at the United Presbyterian Church in Garner, with the Rev. Kay Hooper officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery.

EVELYN FAYE THOMPSON EBELING

CLEAR LAKE - Evelyn Faye Thompson Ebeling, 90, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Mason City.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 100 Ninth Ave. S. in Clear Lake, with Monsignor Robert Hogan officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with a scripture wake service to be held at 7 p.m. The body will be cremated after the service. Inurnment will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, at a later date.

Memorials may be given in the name of Evelyn F. Ebeling to St. Patrick's Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Evelyn was born Dec. 25, 1909, in Polk City, the daughter of John U. and Bertha (Mason) Thompson. She graduated from Mason City High School and from Hamilton Business College as a legal secretary.

She worked for the John Shipley Law firm, (now known as Laird Law Firm), for more than 40 years, retiring at the age of 65.

Evelyn married Fred Ebeling on Dec. 25, 1929, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. They lived in Mason City but enjoyed their summer residence in Clear Lake, where they moved permanently in 1967.

Evelyn loved her family and church. She was a former member of the North Iowa Girl Scout Council, former Girl Scout leader and a member of the board of directors of Good Shepherd.

She was an active member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Iowa Preceptor, Alpha Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi in Mason City, charter member of the first chapter in Mason City of Alpha Chi, and a lifetime member of Iowa Exemplar Preceptor Alpha Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

Evelyn is survived by four children, Douglas Ebeling, of Phoenix, Ariz., Gary Ebeling and his wife, Alice, of Humboldt, Jane Ebeling and her husband, Reinart Huseby, of Hudson, Wis., and Tom Ebeling and his wife, Toni, of Clear Lake; 12 grandchildren, Sheree Cran, Lori Funk, Lisa Bennett, Sandra Ebeling, David Ebeling, Michael Ebeling, Laura Gajdostik, Ann Paulisich, Paul Paulisich, Peter Ebeling, Paul Ebeling and Mark Ebeling; and six great-grandchildren, Christopher Cran, Katie Cran, Sarah Funk, Emily Funk, Brian Funk and Sydney Ebeling.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred, who died Aug. 31, 1992; one brother, Julius Thompson; and one sister, Alma Avise.

THORNTON - Roger M. Caffrey, 77, of Thornton, died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the First United Methodist Church, 4th & Maple in Thornton, with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating.

DONALD KEITH JOHNSON

RACINE, Wis. - Donald Keith Johnson, 64, of Racine, Wis., died Sept. 25, 2000, in Racine.

A graveside inurnment will be held 10:30 a.m. today at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with the Rev. David Anderson of St. James Lutheran Church officiating.

Donald was born on Feb. 18, 1936, in Mason City, the son of John and Agnes (Schuleusner) Johnson. He grew up in Manly and graduated from high school there. He then attended Iowa State University in Ames and later graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He worked for Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill., for six years and then began work for J.I. Case in Racine, Wis. He retired from there in 1983.

Donald is survived by one brother, Deane K. Johnson and his wife, Patricia, of Mason City; two nieces, Linda Stauffacher and her husband, Dennis, and Sheryll Vath and her husband, Cliff, both of Mason City; and two nephews, Dean Johnson Jr. and Dannie K. Johnson, both of Mason City; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

VIVIAN D. HANLEY

CLEAR LAKE - Vivian D. Hanley, 88, formerly of Clear Lake, died Monday, Sept. 18, 2000, at the Bradley Nursing Home in El Cajon, Calif.

Vivian was born June 19, 1912, at Belle Plaine, the daughter of Nevada and Julia Anna Hyett. She was married to Richard W. Hanley on March 8, 1932, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Clear Lake for many years

Mrs. Hanley was employed in the Clear Lake Bakery office for 23 years, retiring in 1973.

She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ludeke, of Venice Calif.; two sons, Michael W., of San Diego, Calif., and Richard D., of San Jose, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Clear Lake Cemetery, with her grandson, Richard Dorance Ludeke, officiating.

PRISCILLA M. HALBACH

STACYVILLE - Priscilla M. Halbach, 92, of Stacyville, died Monday (Oct. 9, 2000) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

The funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in the Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Visitation Catholic Church, with a rosary at 3 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Priscilla was born on Nov. 25, 1907, in Stacyville, to Anton and Gertrude (Simon) Halbach. She was baptized at the Visitation Church and attended Visitation School in Stacyville.

Priscilla was employed at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., the telephone exchange and Dr. Blong and Smith's office until retirement. After her retirement she served a sacristan at Visitation Church for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Cornelius and Ronald.

Priscilla is survived by four sisters, Agatha Heimer, of Austin, Minn., Anna Durben, of Stacyville, Betty and her husband, Al May, of Stacyville, and Esther and her husband, Lawrence Klapperich, of Stacyville; and many nieces and nephews.

JERROLD L. ROOD

MASON CITY - Jerrold L. Rood, 62, of 1353 Plymouth Road, died Sunday (Oct. 8, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. There will be visitation one hour before services at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, Mason City.

Jerrold was born June 17, 1938, in Rutland, the son of Wilbur and Hilda (Torkelson) Rood. He attended school in Bode, then moved to a farm southeast of Mason City with his family in 1958.

Jerrold served in the U. S. Army from October of 1961 to September of 1967. He was stationed in Germany for two years.

Jerrold was united in marriage to Jean E. Brass on Jan. 29, 1972, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. Jerrold was a self-employed carpenter for more than 40 years in the Mason City area.

He loved spending time with his four grandchildren, hunting, trapping, working in the yard, listening to music and watching Vikings games and Mohawk sporting events. Jerrold was also a member of the American Legion. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Jerrold is survived by his wife, Jean Rood of Mason City; two daughters, Janet Borchardt and her husband, Lynn, of Mason City, and Debbie Rood, a student at UNI in Cedar Falls; a son, Troy Rood and his wife, Kirstin, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Britney K. Borchardt, Tyler L. Borchardt, Logan M. Borchardt and Jacob T. Rood, all of Mason City; five sisters, Eleanor McEachran and her husband, Ralph, of Mason City, Shirley Hedrick and her husband, Paul, of Mason City, LaVina Brass and her husband, Anthony, of Mason City, Janet Cooper and her husband, Charles, of Albert Lea, Minn, and Loretta Bennett and her husband, Duane, of Cedar Falls; one sister-in-law, Judy Rood of Mason City; and many loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Paul.

ROGER MORTON CAFFREY

THORNTON - Roger Morton Caffrey 77, of Thornton, died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Thornton, with the Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. Interment will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton, with military honors by Anton Juhl American Legion Post in Thornton.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and one hour before services on Friday at the church.

The family suggest memorials to the Roger Caffrey Memorial Fund.

Roger was born July 27, 1923, son of Guy and Marjorie (Nichols) Caffrey, on a farm near Swaledale. He attended schools in the Swaledale area, Clear Lake High School and graduated from Thornton Consolidated High School in 1941.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a motor machinist's mate from Nov. 22, 1942, until Jan. 13, 1946, in World Ward II. He was stationed for the most part at Honolulu, Hawaii.

Roger married Lois Schmalle on Feb. 24, 1946. They moved to the farm Southwest of Thornton, where they spent their married life. To this union one son was born, Douglas Allan Caffrey. After Doug returned from college in 1972, they enjoyed farming together.

Roger had been an active member in the United Methodist Church of Thornton and held various offices on boards: The American Legion, of which he was a commander for 23 years; Lions Club Charter member, receiving the Melvin Jones award; and Farmers Co-op elevator board, where he served for 12 years.

Roger enjoyed collecting farm toys, going out to eat, traveling and, especially, being involved in the community and his church.

Roger is survived by his son, Douglas and his wife, Jackie, of Thornton; two grandsons, Ryan and Collin Caffrey; his mother, Marjorie Caffrey, of Clear Lake; two sisters-in-law, Draga Caffrey, of Monarch Beach, Calif., and Ardith Aastrup, of Thornton; two brothers-in-law, Wayne Schamalle, of Thornton, and Verdell Schmalle, of Fayette; and a special friend, Ruth Doane, of Sheffield.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy; his wife, Lois; his brother, Robert; and one sister, Elizabeth.

DUANE SONQUIST

GARNER - Duane Sonquist, 65, of Garner died Sunday (Oct. 8, 2000) at his home.

The funeral will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Kay Hooper of the United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be at Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner, and will continue one hour before services on Friday at the church.

Duane Ray Sonquist, the son of Ray and Edith (Casperson) Sonquist, was born Sept. 17, 1935, at Garner. He graduated from Garner High School in 1953, and then worked for Ed Buntenbach at the Garner Livestock Sales for several years.

On Oct. 18, 1958, he married Patricia J. Sparks in Glidden. Duane drove a tank wagon for North Central Farm Service for a number of years. In 1972, they purchased a farm west of Hayfield and farmed until 1991. Duane then worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City from 1991 until he retired, Sept. 8th of this year.

On March 1, 1991, he married Ravae H. Lokensgard Scott at the United Methodist Church in Garner.

He enjoyed farming, fishing, watching football, card playing and visiting with friends. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner.

He is survived by two children, Cindy Sonquist, of Garner, and Dean Sonquist and his wife, Marcia, and their three sons, Andrew, Ryan and Matthew, all of Garner; three stepchildren, Brian Scott of Garner, Dawn Scott of Fairmont, Minn. and her special friend, Arden Herfendal, and James Scott of Berkeley, Calif.; three sisters, Charlene Partlo and her husband, Richard, of Cadillac, Mich., Marcelle Grant and her husband, Verlon, of Riverside, Calif. and June King and her husband, Don, of Cedar Rapids; and two brothers, Victor Sonquist and his wife, Karen, of Caro, Mich. and Bernard Sonquist of San Antonio, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Sonquist, on Sept. 8, 1985; his second wife, Ravae Scott Sonquist on Oct. 8, 1999; his son, Scott Duane Sonquist on Sept. 26, 1989; his father, Ray Sonquist; his mother, Edith Sonquist Thorson; and his stepfather, Clarence Thorson.

MARGARET M. MIHM

ST. LUCAS - Margaret M. Mihm, 79, of St. Lucas, died Saturday, (Oct. 7, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a short illness.

The funeral was held Wednesday at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas, with the Rev. Marvin Salz officiating.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at St. Luke's Chapel, with a rosary and a scripture service.

Mass servers were her grandsons, Paul Galligan and Lucas Thornton. The lector was her granddaughter, Wendy Mihm Herold. Casketbearers were grandsons Cary Jo Mihm, Scott Mihm, Jeremy Pesek, Jamey Pesek, Joshua Pesek, and Adam Thornton. Offertory gift bearers were granddaughters Taisha Thornton, Ashley Galligan, Erin Cayton and Nicole Galligan.

Margaret Mae Mihm was born on Sept. 21, 1921, in Centralia, Ill., the daughter of Alfred and Edna (Bertges) Mitchell. Margaret moved with her family to St. Lucas when she was 1 year old. She attended grade school at St. Luke's and 11th and 12th grade in Waucoma, graduating in 1937.

She then attended the State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years and then went to cosmetology school in Waterloo.

Margaret married Marinus Mihm on June 17, 1943, at St. Luke's Catholic Church in St. Lucas. She owned and managed beauty shops in Ossian, Cresco, Decorah and St. Lucas. Lloyd A. Ruffridge was born on July 26, 1917, in rural Grafton, the son of Henry Oscar and Myra Jane (Graves) Ruffridge. He was baptized in the Plymouth Methodist Church and attended Plymouth and Bolan Methodist Church. He attended and received his education in the rural Grafton schools.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army-Air Corps, serving during World War II.

Lloyd worked as a custodian and dishwasher at the Oakdale Sanitarium for 16 years. He also worked for the Northwood Elevator and Randall Transit Mix in Northwood.

He enjoyed flowers.

He was a member of the American Legion Post in Northwood.

He is survived by one sister, Ruth Millis and her husband, Clarence, of Northwood; three brothers, Myron Ruffridge, of Northwood, Harvey Ruffridge, of Northwood, and Donald Ruffridge, of Northwood; as well as nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

OSAGE - Bea Thoresen, 78, of Osage, died Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Bea was born Aug. 29, 1922, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Schroeder) Cressey. She graduated from Austin High School in 1940.

She was a tap dance instructor in Austin for several years at her dance school "Beatrice Cressey School of Dancing." She was united in marriage to Leonard Thoresen on July 7, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Austin. They farmed east of Osage.

Bea was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Rebecca Circle and the church choir there. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

LATIMER - Donald H. Borcherding, 68, passed away on Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) at his home in rural Latimer. He was a well-known poultry producer in the North Iowa area and surrounding states.

Donald Henry Borcherding was born on Nov. 1, 1931, at Hampton, to Herman C. and Martha (Mueller) Borcherding. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran parochial school and the old Franklin Consolidated School system.

Donald was a hard worker and a good provider for his family. He was a very good friend to everyone - if you said you were cold, he would give you the shirt off his back.

Donald was married to Genevieve Pandil on Aug. 22, 1957, at Niagara Falls, N.Y. To this union, three children were born. Donald and Genevieve moved to their farm in 1958 and started to raise starter pullets after having had other types of poultry on their farm. Donald farmed and worked at various businesses throughout his life. He worked for Simon Maise as an electrician, for Ted Heineking at Latimer Grain, for three generations of Henning Construction and for Gus Schaefer at Schaefer Pullet. Donald did a great deal of traveling as a service representative for Schaefer Pullet and was well known in Iowa and surrounding states for his poultry expertise.

Donald was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Army and assigned to the Air Force. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. He served as a heavy equipment officer with the 840th Engineer Aviation Battalion, serving with SCARWAF (Special Category of the Army with the Air Force). He helped build Air Force runways at Kimpo, Korea, receiving a letter of commendation as Assistant Platoon Sergeant of the earth-moving platoon. Donald was a 50-year member of the Hansen-Have Legion Post in Latimer.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve, who was his best friend and fishing partner; son, Steven and his wife, Marlene, of Klemme; daughter, Jane, of Kansas City; and son, William and his wife, Janet, of Buffalo, N.Y.; brothers, Wilbert and his wife, Margot, of Hampton and Wayne and his wife, Lois, of Latimer; sister-in-law, Sylvia Borcherding, of Latimer; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Darrell Dean James, son of Darrell and Ruby James, was born on March 30, 1940, in Buffalo Center. He was baptized on April 11, 1954, at United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center and confirmed into the Catholic Church on March 29, 1997, at St. James in Forest City.

Dean proudly served in the United States Army. On Dec. 4, 1965, he was united marriage to Joan Kathleen Ryan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly. They made their home in Buffalo Center, where he worked at the Farmer's Cooperative Elevator for more than 35 years. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Dean loved to hunt, fish, garden, woodwork and spend time with his grandchildren. He was blessed with many caring friends and family, a wonderful sense of humor, quick wit and an abiding sense of faith.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan; their two sons, daughter and four grandchildren: Tony, his wife, Melissa, and their children, Amanda and Ryan, of Nashville, Tenn.; Sherri, her husband, Alan, and their children, Shelby and Isaac, of Ankeny; and Doug and his wife, Kate, of Davenport. Dean is also survived by his sister-in-law, Shirley James of Buffalo Center; his sister-in-law, Catherine James of Ames; his brother-in-law, Dick Bohl of Lake Mills; a brother, Ernie James and his wife, Bonnie, of Alta; his sister, Lois Graft of West Branch; his twin sister, Carol Griffiths and her husband, Don, of Lake Mills; his brother, Don James and his wife, Linda, of Forest City; his brother, Ron James and his wife, Barb, of Buffalo Center; and many wonderful nieces, nephews and their spouses and children.

Ruth Marie Wilfong was born on Aug. 18, 1912, the daughter of George and Agnes (Colloton) Igou, in Mason City. She attended and received her education in the St. Joseph Catholic School, graduating from St. Joseph Catholic High School in 1929. She also attended and graduated from Hamilton School of Business in Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Volney Wilfong on Nov. 7, 1931, in Waseca, Minn. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1952. Ruth worked for many years as a bookkeeper and as a receptionist for Dr. A.E. Hale in Mason City.

Ruth had a great love of music and was accepted at the University of Chicago School of Music. She had written the complete composition for an orchestra. As an avid reader, she loved to learn and shared that with those around her.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and had played the organ and piano for many years at the church. Ruth was also a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Prior Lake, Minn.

Left to cherish her memory are four children, Donna Franck, of Waterville, Minn., formerly of Prior Lake, Minn., Robert Wilfong and his wife, JoDee, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., Diane Clements, of Melbourne Beach, Fla., and Richard Wilfong; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two nieces, Patty Weber and her husband, Ron, of South Bend, Ind., and Betty Morse and her husband, Gordon, of Mason City; three grandnieces; two grandnephews; and other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, Volney Wilfong, who died on Sept. 3, 1952, she was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy Carroll, in 1962; and one great-grandson, Teddy Devine, who died on Sept. 3, 1996.

GARNER - Raymond F. Goll, 92, of Garner, passed away Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Raymond Fredrick Goll, the son of Charles J. and Emma E. (Greiman) Goll, was born July 10, 1908, on a farm south of Garner. He attended the rural schools of Ell Township and Garner High School. He lived on the home farm near Garner with his parents and later moved into Garner with them in 1950.

In the 1960s he moved to Duncan Heights and in December of 1990 he moved to Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Raymond had been paralyzed since he was eight years old due to polio

He enjoyed farming, woodworking and singing. He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church.

He is survived by two sisters, Vola Jass, of Garner and Jeroldene Stricker and her husband, Ralph, of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Kathryn Goll of Garner and Frances Gray and her husband, Robert, of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

George Edward Lightbody was born on July 3, 1914 north of Thornton, to Edward and Mary (Ytzen) Lightbody. George attended school for a short time in Rudd, Iowa, then rural school Grimes #9 and graduated from Thornton Consolidated High School with the Class of 1932.

George was united in marriage to Edna Mae Moritz on Aug. 13, 1936 in Mason City, Iowa. The couple farmed and worked in the Thornton area their entire lives while raising their three sons, Larry, Bennett, and Edward.

The couple enjoyed a trip to Scotland in 1986, a gift from their family, to celebrate their golden wedding and also made several trips to visit family in North Carolina.

George loved growing and tending to his flowers as well as spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Thornton.

George entered Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa on Aug. 13, 2000, and died there on Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) at the age of 86.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Mae, of Thornton; two sons, Larry and his wife, Judie, of Thornton, and Edward and his wife, Kay, of Havelock, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Jody Pals and her husband, Bart, of Mason City, Kirk Lightbody and his wife, Kathy, of Arlington, Texas, Connie Smith and her husband, Wes, of Raleigh, N.C., Eric Moritz, of Gloucester, N.C., Travis Moritz and his wife, Allison, of Emerald Isle, N.C., Sean Lightbody, of Emerald Isle, N.C., and Ray Sandlin, of Havelock, N.C.; and great-grandchildren, Katie and Logan Pals, Brittany and Amber Sandlin, Hali, Summer and Trey Moritz and Jody Noell and Bennah Lightbody; one sister-in-law, Margie Mikkelsen, of West Liberty, and one brother-in-law, Irvin Moritz and his wife, Shirley, of Zephyrhills, Fla; and several nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bennett in 1999; and one sister, Ruth Jones in 1985; and her husband, Paul in 1976.

PHARR, Texas - Gale Wilbert Lane, 82, passed away early Tuesday morning (Oct. 10, 2000) at his residence in Pharr, Texas.

He was a native and a high school graduate of the Class of 1935 of Mason City, Iowa, and then went on to receive his B.A. in Education from Drake University. He had been a longtime employee of Armour and Co., and was a supervisor when he retired.

He had been a member of the Elks Lodge for 48 years and was Past Exhaltent Ruler.

He became a permanent resident of the Rio Grande Valley in 1984 residing in Alamo, Texas, and the moving to Pharr, Texas, in 1996. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of McAllen, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Anna Marie Lane; daughter, Judith Ann Eagleton, of Cisco, Ill.; son, James H. Lane, of Salinas, Calif.; six grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Monday at Brook Ridge Retirement Residence, 1001 West Ridge Road, Pharr, Texas, with the Rev. Ken Harrison officiating.

OSAGE - Bea Thoresen, 78, of Osage, died Wednesday (Oct. 11, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. Bea was born Aug. 29, 1922, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Schroeder) Cressey. She graduated from Austin High School in 1940.

She was a tap dance instructor in Austin for several years at her dance school "Beatrice Cressey School of Dancing." She was united in marriage to Leonard Thoresen on July 7, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Austin. They farm east of Osage.

Bea was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and the Rebecca Circle and the church choir there. She also was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour before services at the church.

MASON CITY - Robert F. "Bob" Linderman, 64, of 714 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, died Thursday morning (Oct. 12, 200) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Robert was born on Nov. 21, 1935 in Cresco, Iowa, the son of LeRoy and Florence (Kilby) Ranc Linderman. He attended school at Lime Springs and then worked on coal trains at the Oliver Tractor Plant in Charles City.

In April of 1957 he was united in marriage to Margaret Weber at Osage, Iowa. To this union was born four children. In 1969 they moved to Mason City. Following a permanent disability he continued doing handyman work.

Bob enjoyed fishing for catfish with a cold one, doing flower and vegetable gardening, bird watching, listening to country western music especially Hank Williams, road tripping, and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and friends. He will be sadly missed by all.

MANLY - Audrey Olen Faught, 89, a resident of the Manly Care Center, died on Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at Mercy Medical Health Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Douglas Anderson of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Audrey O. Faught was born Feb. 16, 1911, in Milon, Mo., the son of Cecil H. and Amy (Wood) Faught. He attended schools in Missouri. As a young man he came to Mason City and worked as a hired hand for many farmers.

He was united in marriage with Dorothy Zorn on Nov. 11, 1931, at First United Methodist Church in Mason City.

In the early '30s he bought a dairy farm near Mason City that he dairied for more than 55 years. During this time he installed the first Dairy Parlor in north Iowa as well as the largest glass-lined silo in the state. Audrey also worked for the sugar beet plant during much of this time.

He served as the director of the Lime Creek No. 4 country school for many years. Audrey often said he was happiest on the farm working with his family.

Audrey is survived by his wife, Dorothy, Manly; his sons, Gary Faught and his wife, Deloris, Mason City, David Faught and his wife, Marjorie, Mason City, and Roger Faught and his wife, Donna, Manly; a daughter, Joyce Smith and her husband, Gary, Burnsville, Minn; 10 grandchildren, Dianne, Debra, Vicki, Randall, Cheryl, Robin, Douglas, Lisa, Shaun and Wendi; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edith Westcott and her husband, Lawrence, Medford, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elvis and Tom; a sister, Betty; and two grandsons, David Jr. and Neil.

MASON CITY - Leroy W. Mott, 83, of 312 S. Vermont, died Tuesday (Oct. 10, 2000) at Clarinda Treatment Complex.

Leroy W. Mott was born March 20, 1917, in Lacey, Iowa, the son of Carl L. and Edna (Tinkle) Mott. At a young age his family moved to Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1935. While in school he lettered in baseball, wrestling and football where he was also an All-State player. He attended Mason City Junior College. Leroy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Leroy was married to Elnor I. French. After her death, he was united in marriage to Mary A. Burger on Valentine's Day in 1969.

Leroy worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired in 1976 after 31 years with the Post Office. He also worked in Mason City with Angell Fencing, Harold Platts Construction, Cooper Cap & Gown as well as remodeling Mohawk Square.

Leroy was a member of First United Methodist Church, Retired Postal Employees and the Class of 1935. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, family gatherings and walking his dog.

His survivors include his wife, Mary A. Mott, Mason City; three sons, Gary Mott and his wife, Carolyn, Mason City, Richard Faktor, Washington, and Martin Mott and his wife, Sue, California; four daughters, Judy Freed and her husband, John, New Zealand, JoAnn McDougle, California, Denise Sturges and her husband, Dennis, St. Ansgar, and Margret Dunblazier and her husband, Cal, Minnesota; a brother, Cecil Mott and his wife, Mary Jean, Mason City; a sister, Pauline Goranson and her husband, Kenneth, Mason City; 15 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.

ST. ANSGAR - Elizabeth (Bette) Sophia Halvorson, 79, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage.

Elizabeth (Bette) Sophia Halvorson was born Feb. 20, 1921, at Marshfield, Wis., the daughter of Julius and Agnes Margaret (Paulus) Rasmussen. Having been baptized as an infant, she was confirmed in the Methodist Church, Lewis, Wis., March 27, 1932, by her uncle, the Rev. Barton Padon. At an early age, Bette made her home with this aunt and uncle when her 34-year-old mother died.

Bette, as a youngster, attended schools in Chicago and Wisconsin and upon earning a bachelor of science degree from Stout University, Menomonie, Wis., taught Home Economics in the Vocational School, Sheboygan, Wis.

Her marriage to Donal Halvorson took place in Wauwatosa, Wis., Aug. 27, 1944, and two children, Cathleen and Timothy, were born to this marriage.

Following her husband's service in World War II, in 1946 they moved to his hometown of St. Ansgar where he entered the family banking enterprise. Serving the community as a volunteer ,Bette was involved in a variety of activities. As a member of the United Methodist Church, she served on various committees and as an officer of United Methodist Women.

Through her concern, UNICEF was initiated in St. Ansgar in 1962. As a 40-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and as Red Cross Blood Program Chairman, she received a citation for 23 years of service in this project from the Auxiliary. Her interest in libraries was demonstrated by 22 years as trustee and chairman of the Board of Trustees of Nissen Library in St. Ansgar.

She served on the Community Coordinating Committee, was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, and belonged to Clausen Colony of Questers. She also belonged to IC Club, a Federated Women's Club. She also helped initiate the Parent Teachers Association in the St. Ansgar Community Schools.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Donal, St. Ansgar; a daughter, Cathleen and son-in-law, Jack Carruthers, Fort Myers, Fla.; one son, Timothy and his wife, Sally, of St. Ansgar; four grandchildren, Melissa and her husband, Christopher Tomasso, James Daniel Woolm, Megan Elizabeth Halvorson, and Erin Katherine Halvorson; one great-grandson, Jared Christopher Tomasso; one brother, Harold Rasmussen and his wife, Helen, of Prairie du Chein, Wis.; several nieces, nephews and inlaws; a brother-in-law, John Halvorson and his wife, Joyce; and sisters-in-law, Laura (Halvorson) and her husband, Edward Jobe, and Louise (Halvorson) Tellefson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two special aunts, and two special uncles.

PINSON, Ala. - Joan Dehnert, 79, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) in Pinson, Ala.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Birmingham, Ala., and born in Lakota, Iowa. She was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and St. Ann's Guild.

A special honor Joan received was graduating first in her class at Holy Family High School in Mason City.

Edwin "Eddie" Quinn was born July 7, 1919, in Hull, Iowa. He attended country schools near Hull and Hull Public High School.

On Aug. 17, 1940, Eddie married Lois Halter in Klamath Falls, Ore. They lived in Oregon for six years after their marriage, then moved to Rock Valley, Iowa. In 1947 they moved to Emmetsburg where they owned and operated a radiator repair shop for 20 years. After that Eddie ran a Star Mail route for Postal Service, worked for Pamline Manufacturing in Emmetsburg for a number of years and later worked for N & A Manufacturing in Mallard before retiring.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic parish in Emmetsburg.

Eddie is survived by his wife, Lois Quinn, Emmetsburg; five daughters, Darlis Hoppe, Trimont, Minn., Danita O'Leary, Emmetsburg, Dawn Siemers, Emmetsburg, Denise Merideth, Garner, and Donna Moser, Algona; two sons, Dennis Quinn, Fort Dodge, and David Quinn, Mason City; 19 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Zorning, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and two brothers, Vernon Quinn of Doon, Iowa, and Wilfred Quinn, Wichita, Kan.

BELMOND - Michael M. Luick, 55, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at N.E. Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga., of a heart attack.

A funeral Mass will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond, with the Rev. David Beckman and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Belmond.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday at Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond, with a rosary beginning at 2:30 and a Scripture service at 7.

Michael M. Luick, the son of R. Cortland and Lucille (Glaman) Luick, was born Nov. 19, 1944, in Belmond. He attended Belmond High School and graduated in 1963.

He was united in marriage to Mary Lynne Knoll on Dec. 23, 1967. They lived in the Des Moines area before settling in Belmond in 1988. Mike worked for Ennis Truck Lines the past 15 years.

He enjoyed his family, golf and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary; his five children, Michelle and her husband, Darren Lawrence, of Jacksonville, Fla., Deborah and her husband, Michael Steilen, of Boston, Mass., Thomas Luick and his wife, Rachel, of Chicago, Ill., Andrea and her husband, Jason Pals, of Alexander, and Amy Luick of Belmond; seven granddaughters, Emily Lawrence, Danielle, Alexandra, Madison and Cameron Steilen, Hanna and Maggie Pals; his mother, Lucille Luick of Belmond; sisters, Mary and her husband, Don Shaw, of Belmond, and Helen and her husband, Bill Frey, of Chicago, Ill.; and many other relatives and friends.

Michael was preceded in death by his grandson, Quentin Pals, and his father, R. Courtland Luick.

WILBUR EUGENE SCHMOLL

CLEAR LAKE - Wilbur Eugene Schmoll, 73, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly with the Rev. Dennis Ganz and the Rev. Jack Musker officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Clear Lake Cemetery with military honors by the Clear Lake VFW.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and visitation will continue one hour prior to the service time Tuesday at the church.

The family of Wilbur Eugene Schmoll has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Wilbur Eugene Schmoll Memorial Fund.

Wilbur was born on July 27, 1927, in rural Clear Lake, the son of Charley and Frances (Knaak) Schmoll. He received his education in the Clear Lake school system, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1944. After completing his schooling he farmed with his father on the family Century Farm.

He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1950 and served his country honorably until his discharge in 1952. After his honorable discharge he returned to the farm, and in 1961 he joined his father in the Schmoll Insurance Agency, where he was a Cerro Gordo Mutual Ins. Agent and Iowa Mutual Tornado Insurance Agent out of West Des Moines.

He was united in marriage to Lee Jane Huffman on April 21, 1973, in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He was a life member of Am Vets, American Legion and a charter member of Clear Lake Evening Lions. He was on the board of directors of Cerro Gordo Mutual Ins., past vice president of Cerro Gordo Mutual Ins., board member Farmers Co-op Gas and Oil in Mason City, and secretary of Drainage District 40 since 1975 and North Iowa Fair member.

Wilbur loved and enjoyed living in Clear Lake.

Wilbur is survived by his wife, Lee Jane Schmoll of the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center; three stepsons, Randall Davis of Clear Lake, Robert Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Richard Davis of Oklahoma City; seven step-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Merlyn Schmoll and his wife, Lois, of Lake Mills; two nephews, Jack Ray Schmoll and his wife, Barbara, of Wilton, and Henry Dean Schmoll and his wife, Barbara, of Marion; his good friends, Arvid and Dixie Matson and Roger and Cheryl Deike, all of Clear Lake; and his best friend, Sam.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
