SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Janice Toavs, 77, a former Forest City resident, died Monday (Feb. 14, 2000) in St. Paul, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Faith Alliance Church in St. Paul, Minn. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City.

GRAFTON - Orpha L. Trettin, 86, of Grafton, died Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

MASON CITY - Marie L. George, 86, of 852 Eighth St. S.E., died Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2000) at the Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Marie L. George Memorial Fund.

Marie L. George was born Sept. 23, 1913, in Mason City, the daughter of Herman and Lena (Jachstein) Tobsing. She attended school in Mason City.

Marie married Alden J. H. George on June 13, 1931 in Charles City. The Georges lived in Louisville, Ky. from 1940-44 returning to Mason City in 1944. Marie worked as a waitress for Shills Maid-Rite for 35 years retiring in 1965.

She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Eagles Lodge.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Schmidt and husband, Ernest, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Judy Spear and husband, Roger, of Woden and Tammy Millard and husband, Brian, of Mason City; two great-grandchildren, Brandon Millard and Amy Spear; one sister, Martha Friend, of Mason City; one special niece, Dorothy Duckert and other nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two sisters, Lottie Barker and Clara Tuthill; and one granddaughter, Deborah.

MASON CITY - Mabel A. Helbling, 94, of 902 Seventh St. S.E. Mason City, died Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

DON A. VORCE

MASON CITY - Don A. Vorce, 57, of 1 Boulder Rd., died Sunday (Feb. 13, 2000) at Clear Lake.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., with the Rev. Fred Lewis of Clear Lake United Methodist Church officiating. Following cremation at Cremation Services of North Iowa, inurnment will be held at a later date.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Don Vorce Memorial Fund.

Don was born on June 14, 1942, in Mason City, the son of Charles Clair and Evelyn (Berends) Vorce. Don was baptized in April of 1955 at Wesley United Methodist Church. He was educated in the Mason City school systems and then entered the Army in 1960. He served his country honorably and was discharged in 1962. He worked for several area businesses until starting Don's Dry Wall in the early 70s. He has been doing dry wall work ever since.

On July 27, 1968, he was united in marriage to Linda Griswold at Albert Lea, Minn. He loved racing stock cars and was seen at the local tracks during the late 60s and early 70s. Don loved to travel to area golf courses and pursue his passion. He also loved to listen to rock music.

Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Pheasant's Forever.

Those thankful in sharing Don's life include his wife, Linda, of Mason City; their three daughters, Jennifer and her husband, Marc Lunning, Kim Vorce, all of Mason City, and Donja and her husband, Brian Eichers, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one granddaughter, Lillie Marie Vorce, of Mason City; two brothers, Charles H. and his wife, Joyce Vorce, of Mason City; and Paul and his wife, Sharon Vorce, of Worthington, S.D.; three sisters; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Bob Townsend, of Charles City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and maternal and paternal grandparents.

ELIZABETH ANN 'BETTY' NITCHER

MANLY - Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Nitcher, 56, died Monday (Feb. 14, 2000) at her home in Goldfield, after a long battle with cancer.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manly, with the Rev. Thomas McAndrew officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manly.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today with a public scriptural rosary service at 7 p.m. at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly.

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Nitcher was born on May 21, 1943, on Highway 65 South near Mason City, the daughter of Orville and Mary (Doebel) Hagen. She received her education in the North Central Community School system, graduating from North Central High School in 1961. She also attended and graduated from North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City in 1993.

Betty enjoyed fishing, cross-stitching and playing Bingo and Scrabble, but her great love and enjoyment was spending time with her 10 grandchildren who were her pride and joy. She enriched the lives of almost everyone she met through her divine faith and spirituality. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Left to cherish her memory are her three daughters and sons-in-law, Kim Hull and Wayne, of Mason City, Ronda Hove and Chris Collins, of Goldfield and Bess Eilertson and Rob, of Northwood; 10 grandchildren, Chris, Teri, Joshua, Renee, Brandon, Cody, Jordyn, Kayla, Courtney and Kristen; her mother, Mary Hagen, of Manly; her brothers and sisters, Sharon Hrubetz, of Mason City, Tom and Dorothy Hagen, of Northwood, Knute and Sherri Hagen, of Portland, Ore., Mary "Toots" Rork, of Manly, Sarah Hall, of Annandale, Minn., Monica Nitcher, of Manly, and Becky Hull, of Mason City; several nieces and nephews, each one of them so very special to Betty in their own way; aunts and uncles, Leone Christensen, Karen Payne, Monica Hagen, Marcus "Bud" and Bonnie Doebel.

She was preceded in death by her father, Orville Hagen; paternal and maternal grandparents, Oliver and Lottie Hagen and Arthur and Bernadette Doebel; one brother, Marcus Paul Hagen; one niece, Janis Jo Hull and several aunts and uncles.

OSAGE - Nicholas J. Cotter, 54, of Osage and formerly of Wantagh, N.Y., died Sunday (Feb. 13, 2000) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with Sister Rosanne Rottinghaus, Pastoral Associate at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery with military rites by Osage V.F.W. Post #7920 and Osage American Legion Post #278.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be additional visitation on Friday from 8 a.m. until time of services.

RUTH E. JAROSH

MASON CITY - Ruth E. Jarosh, 83, of 962 15th Place N.E., died Monday (Feb. 14, 2000) at the Heritage Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at Noon today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 305 Fifth St. S.E. with Father Carl Ries officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 101 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Memorials may be given to St. Joseph's Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Ruth E. Jarosh was born Feb. 26, 1916 in McGregor, to Garth and Blanche (Moore) Veech. Ruth attended schools in Duluth, Minn. where she grew up. Her family moved to the Mason City area when she was in her teens.

Ruth was united in marriage to Ignatius Jarosh on May 20, 1938 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mason City.

Being a very giving and caring person, Ruth cared for people in their homes for many years.

Ruth was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church since 1938 and a former member of the Harmony Club in Rockwell.

Ruth was known for her baking and cooking. Hardly an event would go by in Rockwell, without one of her Lady Baltimore Cakes being served. She enjoyed gardening and playing cards, especially Gin Rummy.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Sylvia Colman and her husband, Thomas, of Mason City; twin sons, Charles Jarosh and his wife, Dianne, of Mason City and Carl Jarosh, of Mason City; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; one brother, David Veech and his wife, Rosemary, of Mason City; sisters, Edith Krajnik and husband, Ernest, of Francis Creek, Wis. And Barbara Borchard and husband, Dale, of Edwardsville, Kan., and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1968; one brother and three sisters and one brother in infancy.

MESERVEY - Funeral services for Louis Dean Dirks Jr., 58, of Meservey will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Interment will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf-Grarup Funeral Home in Meservey.

Louis Dean Dirks Jr. was born on Oct. 23, 1941, in Meservey, to Louis Dirks and Tena Boelman. Louis was schooled and graduated from Thornton High School.

Following graduation, he began working for Chicago Great Western Railroad, later becoming Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He worked for them for 31 years, living in several communities in Iowa before moving to Meservey in 1994.

On Jan. 28, 1962, Louis married Barbara Kerdus in Mason City.

Louis was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians, was a NASCAR fan, enjoyed fishing, golfing and bird watching as well as spending time with his grandchildren.

Louis died at his home in Meservey on Monday (Feb. 14, 2000) at the age of 58.

Survivors include his children, Brian Dirks and wife, Tanya, of Storm Lake, Brenda Snyder and husband, Scott, of Fairmont, Minn., and Eric Dirks and wife, Angie, of Storm Lake; four grandchildren, Melinda and Luke Snyder and Damien and Dallas Dirks. Also surviving is Louis' mother, Tena Dirks, of Sheffield; brothers and sisters, Doris Dirks, of Thornton, Ronald and wife, Judy, of Forest City, Karen Ude and husband, Frank, of Thornton, Jim and wife, Nancy, of Ankeny, and John and wife, Cindy, of Mason City.

Louis was preceded in death by his father; and two brothers, Robert and Jerry.

GRAFTON - Orpha L. Trettin, 86, of Grafton died Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton, with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson and the Rev. Rose Marie Nack officiating. Interment will be in the Grafton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Champion Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Orpha was born Dec. 14, 1913, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Fred and Ruth (Hillborn) Bryun. She was raised in Manly and graduated from Manly High School.

Orpha married Roy H. Trettin on June 25, 1933, at Manly. They farmed in and around the Grafton area all of their lives, retiring to Grafton in 1973. Roy died on Dec. 29, 1974.

Orpha was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She held several different offices in church organizations and was a 4-H Leader and a Music Mother.

Orpha was affectionately known as "Granny" to her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Schmidt, of Osage; a son, Dale Trettin and his wife, Coleen, of Grafton; a son-in-law, Wayne Braun and his wife, Lavon, of Granite, Okla.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Trettin, of Mason City; grandchildren, Vicki Kroneman and her husband, James, of Osage, Robin Tabbert and her husband, Duane, of Grafton, Kimberly Spitz and her husband, Michael, of Osage, Dawn Schutter and her husband, Dwane, of Titonka, Todd Trettin and his wife, Jennifer, of Carpenter, Deborah Belcher and her husband, Carl, of San Antonio, Texas, Meri Jo Drone and her husband, David, of Altus, Okla., John Braun and his wife, Cindy, of Altus, Okla., William Braun and his wife, Linda, of Farmington, Ark. and Kevin Braun, of Granite, Okla.; 15 great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather; her husband, Roy, in 1974; and a daughter, Maxine Braun in 1993.

GERALD O. AELING

ST. CLOUD, Minn. - Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19 at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, for Gerald O. Aeling, 90, of 1810 Minnesota Blvd. S.E., St. Cloud, Minn., formerly of Mason City, who died on Wednesday (Feb. 16, 2000) at the St. Benedict Center in St. Cloud.

Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald was born on July 13, 1909, in Dayton, to Otis J. and Tolly (Johnson) Aeling. He attended school in the Dayton area.

On April 1, 1934, Mr. Aeling was united in marriage to Thelma M. Blethen at New Hampton. Two children were born to this union.

Mr. Aeling owned and operated Cerro Gordo Hatchery in Mason City from 1937 until he retired in 1983. Mr. and Mrs. Aeling continued to live in Mason City after their retirement. Mrs. Aeling died in 1992 and Mr. Aeling later moved to St. Cloud in 1995 to be close to his daughter, Linda.

He was a resident of St. Benedict Village from 1995 until 1999, when he became a resident of St. Benedict Center, both of St. Cloud.

Mr. Aeling is survived by two children, Linda and her husband, Floyd Ayers, of St. Cloud, Minn. and John and his wife, Dixie Aeling, of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ida Barton, of Otho.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Thelma, Gerald was preceded in death by four brothers, Warren, Clifford, Vern and Glen.

CLEAR LAKE - Linda Matthews, 40, of 1200 N. 9th St. (Opportunity Village), Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Feb. 16, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, at the Opportunity Village. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

NORMAN JUHL

GARNER - Norman Juhl, 87, of Garner, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 16, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller, with the Rev. Owen Gaasedelen officiating. Interment will be in Ellington Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.

Norman Juhl, the son of Christian and Christina (Schau) Juhl, was born July 31, 1912, on the family farm south of Miller. The family moved to Forest City, where Norman graduated from high school in 1932.

He farmed the Juhl family farm south of Miller for more than 47 years, moving to his home in Garner in 1980. On Aug. 21, 1942, he married Ruth Thora Schow at Macon, Mo. After his "retirement" in 1980, he continued to help his son, Mark, on the farm, as farming was his passion.

He also delivered Winnebago Motor Homes for eight years, enabling him to travel all over the United States, seeing the country and visiting his many relatives. For the past 18 years, he had driven a truck and helped at Schroeder's North Iowa Grain Equipment Company.

Norman thoroughly enjoyed his family, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, farming, church and his many friends.

He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Miller for more than 60 years, served on the school board of Miller for seven years and the Garner-Hayfield Community School board for 22 years. He was also a board member of the Federal Land Bank for 16 years.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Juhl, of Garner; three children, Mary Ann Juhl, of Des Moines, Chris Juhl and his wife, Mary, of Garner and Mark Juhl and his wife, Carol, who live on the family farm north of Garner; seven grandchildren, Tom Juhl and his wife, Stephanie, Alison Juhl, Jeff Juhl, Molly Juhl, Melissa Juhl, Kevin Juhl and Alan Juhl.

His parents; three sisters, Susie Douglas, Anna White and May Hallett; and five brothers, Merle Juhl, Melvin Juhl, Clifford Juhl, Peter Juhl and Kenneth Juhl, preceded him in death.

LELAND - Kathryn Kirschbaum, 58, of Leland, died Wednesday (Feb. 16, 2000) at her home in Leland.

ROBERT C. 'BOB' JUNG

CLEAR LAKE - Robert C. "Bob" Jung, 62, of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Feb. 15, 2000) at the Creston Greater Community Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, where a scriptural wake will be held at 7 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Bob was born on April 30, 1937, in Charles City, the son of Walter J. and Mabel Edna (Howe) Jung. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1955, and then went to work for the Chicago Helicopter Airway.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" Collins on January 31, 1959, in Danbury. Bob entered the Air Force in April of 1959 in San Angelo, Texas. For the next 23 years, Bob was assigned to many locations in Europe with the security service.

Bob retired from the Air Force in December of 1982 and was assigned to embassies within Europe for the Department of State. Fifteen years later, Bob retired again to enjoy his hobbies of crossword puzzles, model trains, and anything in the outdoors, especially fishing.

He was fluent in 10 languages and taught classes in Russian at North Iowa Area Community College. He also earned a bachelors degree from the University of New York.

Bob is survived by his wife, Betty, of Clear Lake; three children, Mark Jung and Vicki Bonson, of Minneapolis, Minn., Matt Jung of Reno, Nev. and Susan Staudt and her husband, Terry, of Mason City; three grandchildren, Chris and Cathleen Jung and Jacob Staudt; his mother, Mabel Hansen and her husband, Donavon, of Charles City; one sister, Mavis Sullivan and her husband, Miles, of Clifton, Va.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his father, Walter.

EVELYN ANN EISENBACHER

WESLEY - Evelyn Ann Eisenbacher, 74, of 2105 240th Ave., died Thursday (Feb. 17, 2000) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wesley, with the Rev. Lynn Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Catholic Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation will be held from 2:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Wesley, with a Catholic Daughters of the Americas rosary at 3 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Evelyn Ann was born May 14, 1925, in Columbus, Neb., the daughter of Leo and Julia (Kaipust) Gossman. She attended school in Columbus, Neb. and graduated in 1943. She moved to Buffalo Center after graduation.

She was united in marriage to Ralph Smith in 1945 at Buffalo Center, and the couple farmed near Britt. Ralph died in 1972.

Evelyn married Vincent Eisenbacher on July 5, 1975, at Britt. Vincent and Evelyn lived and farmed south of Wesley.

She enjoyed sewing, gardening and playing cards. Evelyn was a member of the St. Joseph Church Guild.

She had suffered for 20 years with Parkinson's disease. She became a resident of the Westview Care Center in 1995.

She is survived by her husband, Vincent Eisenbacher, of Wesley; one son, Charles Smith; two stepsons, James Eisenbacher, of Phoenix, Ariz. and John Eisenbacher, of Waterloo; seven stepdaughters, Rita Goranson, of Mason City, Ann Kloempken, of Chanhassen, Minn., Jane Krout, of Broken Arrow, Okla., Mary Jeanne Paganini, of Wading River, N.Y., Linda Oleson, of Dows, Judy Jeppeson, of Pillager, Minn. and Teresa Lappe, of Wesley; 22 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Duane Gossman, of Buffalo Center; and three sisters, Ivona Mahlendorf, of Hooper, Neb., Marjorie Sausek, of Tucson, Ariz. and Arlene Tebben, of Carnavan.

She was preceded in death by her father, Leo Gossman; her mother, Julia Gossman; one son, William Smith; a sister, Phyllis Griffin; and her first husband, Ralph Smith.

CLEAR LAKE - Linda Lee Matthews, 40, of Wildwood Cottage Opportunity Village, died Wed. (Feb. 16, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Linda was born March 11, 1959, in Mesa, Ariz., the daughter of Donna Lee Baltzegar. She moved to the Village to live in 1983. Linda was a beloved friend of the Village, participated in the Village choir, GED program, and was cottage secretary for Wildwood. She enjoyed playing on the computer, playing board games, Super Nintendo, going to the Surf and listening to Buddy Holly, White Sidewalls and other 1950s and 1960s music.

Linda attended Zion Lutheran Church and was a member of the Friendship and Fun Club and was just elected president.

Linda is survived by her two sisters, Tammy Hopkins, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Terri Hilliard, of Lake Hansen, Ariz.; one aunt, Pat Matthews, of Iowa City; her special friends, Jan Craun through Iowa Guardianship, Pat Schultz, Connie Felt, Julie Teschuk and her friends at Opportunity Village.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Donna Lee Baltzegar; grandparents, Julius and Ruth Matthews; and her uncle, Ron Matthews.

RUDD - Irene Christina Moore, 86, of Rudd, died Friday (Feb. 18, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 21, at the Sheckler Colonial Chapel, 114 N. Hawkeye, Nora Springs, with the Rev. Richard Pippert and the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, rural Rudd.

The family of Irene Christina Moore has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Rudd United Methodist Church in her memory.

Irene Christina Moore was born on Nov. 14, 1913, south of Rudd, the daughter of William and Christina (LaCoste) Rolfes. She attended and received her education in the Niles Township School system.

She was united in marriage to Homer Moore on Oct. 25, 1932, in Nora Springs. He preceded her in death in January of 1966. After their marriage she helped her husband with answering phones and bookkeeping at their business, Moore Oil Company, in Rudd, and she also worked for the Hoovers Hatchery in Rudd for 10 years.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, making afghans, playing cards, bingo, scrabble games and fishing.

She was a member of the 500 card club and the Royal Neighbors, both in Rudd.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Dolores Larson and her husband, Russell, of Rudd, Larry Moore, of Rudd, and Leland Moore and his wife, Sandra, of Rudd; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Inez Field, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., and Mabel Green, of Rudd; as well as other relatives and friends.

Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents.

Helen Hattie Thompson was born Nov. 7, 1902, in Greene, a daughter of Jesse and May (Olney) Thompson and died Thursday (Feb. 17, 2000) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene from complications of old age.

She was the daughter of pioneer rural mail carriers in the Greene area and received her education in the Greene public schools. As a young lady, she began working for a physician in Minneapolis and later for one in Charles City.

Helen was also a pioneer in her own field of providing home care to her aging parents and individuals in the Greene and surrounding area. She will be remembered for her little black coupe that took her from job to job those many years.

In July of 1962, she became employed by Harry Downs and on Jan. 27, 1963, was united in marriage to him at the Church of Christ in Greene. They made their home in Greene but soon acquired an Airstream trailer and traveled throughout the United States. In 1976 they sold their home in Greene and moved to Sebring, Fla.

Following Harry's death on May 24, 1984, she continued to make her home in Sebring until 1996, when she returned to Iowa, making her home at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. This last year she moved to the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Helen was a meticulous homemaker who enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She enjoyed her yard and the flowers and citrus fruit trees that she cared for. Her family was of great importance to her as she attempted to preserve the family history and its heirlooms for future generations. She was an avid reader of the Bible and related literature and enjoyed playing golf.

She was a former member of the Church of Christ in Greene and the Fairmont Church of Christ in Sebring.

Living family members include her stepson, Harry Jr. and his wife, Suzanne Downs, of Atlanta, Ga.; two stepdaughters, Lucille Findlay, of Clinton and Irene Van Dyke, of Hillsborough, N.C.; eight stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-great-gradchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Roy Thompson; and one sister, Pearl Ritter.

MASON CITY - Dale Swanson, 77, of 92 River Heights Dr., died Thursday (Feb. 17, 2000) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., of respiratory failure due to ALS.

Virgil Dale Swanson was born on Sept. 21, 1922, in Hartington, Neb. He was the only son of Alfred Nels and Gertrude I. (Lundberg) Swanson. Dale attended country school in Hartington and Bloomfield, Neb., until his family moved to Northwood, where he graduated from high school in 1940.

Dale served in the United States Navy for three years (1943-46). After his discharge he attended Luther College in Decorah for two and a half years. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames.

Dale was united in marriage with Louise E. Miles on Dec. 20, 1953, in Riceville. They made their home in Mason City.

From 1954-56 he taught veterans in the Farm Training Program. He was a cattle buyer for Armour and Company for 13 years, Blue Ribbon Beef for four years and Iowa Beef Processors for 18 years. He retired in 1988.

Dale was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, the American Legion, and the Elks and Masonic Lodge.

He will be missed by his wife, Louise, Mason City; his daughters, Janet Dean, Mason City, and Eileen Mediger and her husband, Randy, Waterville, Minn.; four grandchildren, Brandee and Gary Dean, Mason City, and Jordan and Kayla Mediger, Waterville, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Garret and Morgan; one sister, Maxine Darnall and her husband, Lloyd, Brookings, S. D.; his mother-in-law, Ella Miles, Riceville; and many nieces and nephews.

EDNA MAXINE BAILEY

ROWAN - Edna Maxine Bailey, 85, passed away Saturday (Feb. 19, 2000) at Belmond Community Hospital in Belmond.

Edna Maxine (Hansen) Bailey, the daughter of Arthur and Mabel (Olson) Hansen, was born Aug. 20, 1914, near Rowan. She grew up and attended school in Rowan and graduated from Rowan High School in 1932. She attended Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls and taught at country schools in Vernon Township, Wright County, and West Fork No. 2 in Franklin County. She was employed as a nanny in Chicago from 1939 to 1941.

On April 6, 1941, she married Edwin Bailey. They had three children, Lynn, LaNell and Alvin. They farmed in the Rowan area until Edwin's death in October of 1968. She moved into Rowan in 1978.

Edna was a member of the Rowan Progress Club, Legion Auxiliary, Alpha Circle, a quilting group and the United Church of Rowan. She enjoyed playing her piano, sewing and flower gardening. She greatly enjoyed seeing her grandchildren in their music programs.

Edna loved to travel and made trips to Mexico, Scandinavia, India and China.

Survivors include her son, Lynn Bailey of Rowan; daughter, LaNell and her husband, John Brandes, of Waterloo; son, Alvin Bailey and his wife, Becky, of Rowan; a brother, Arvid Hansen of Rowan; five grandchildren, Shane Bailey and his wife, LoRell, Alyssa and her husband, Brad Hamlyn, Linda and her husband, Kevin Brandes, Anne-Marie Bailey and Kathryn Bailey; and four great-grandchildren, Heather, Patrick, Michael and Isabelle.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; her parents; and a great-grandson, Tony.

LARRY D. BUSBY

MASON CITY - Larry D. Busby was born Oct. 7, 1948, in Des Moines, to John W. Busby and Louise England Busby of Clearfield. He grew up on the family farm, attending school at Clearfield until his sophomore year. Larry graduated high school at Poudre High in Fort Collins, Colo., and went on to school and became a licensed cosmetologist. In 1968 he entered the U.S. Army and served his tour of duty in Vietnam.

Larry was united in marriage to Deanna Blagg of Fort Collins, Colo., in 1970. To this union one child was born, Melissa Lee Busby. In 1979, he was married to Kim Flannery of Wessington Springs, S.D., and to this union four children were born, Christopher, Chantel, Clayton and Carter. Larry was a natural salesman, working in sales most of his life, except for a brief stint as a cosmetologist. Most recently, he worked at the Sears Store in Mason City, in the appliance department.

Larry Busby departed this life on Jan. 19, 2000, at the age of 51, at his home. He leaves to mourn his passing, his children, Melissa Hill and husband, Bob, and granddaughter, Brooklyn, of Belmond, Christopher, Chantel, Clayton and Carter Busby of Wessington Springs, S.D.; two sisters, Christene Solomon and husband, Dale, of Evanston, Wyo., Pat Walling and husband, Jim of Webster City; brother, John C. Busby and wife, Sue, of Clearfield; a host of nieces, nephews and friends. We will all remember him for his quick smile and his willingness to help a friend.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Louise Busby; and his brother-in-law, Larry Morris.
