CHARLES CITY - Coleen (Mrs. Walter) Fluhrer, 69, of 1994 Ocean Ave., died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Bethany Alliance Church in Charles City with the Rev. Jim McDonald officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main Ave., and will continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

CLIFFORD W. TURNBULL

CLEAR LAKE - Clifford Warren Turnbull, 90, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Steven Cox of the Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and will resume at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Clifford W. Turnbull Memorial Fund.

Clifford was born March 10, 1909, in Mason City, the son of Bert Irwin and Lulu (Taylor) Turnbull. He attended school in Mason City. Clifford worked at Mason City Auto Body Shop.

Clifford married Leona Kissel Feb. 3, 1934, in Albert Lea, Minn. They farmed west of Rockford. He later worked at the Carrott Hardware in Rockford, owned and operated Cliff Turnbull Body Shop in Rockford, worked at the ASCS office in Mason City and then at the Portland Elevator.

After his retirement they lived in Texas for 12 years, then moved to Lake City, Minn., Redmond, Ore., and in 1981, moved to Clear Lake.

Clifford enjoyed playing cards, woodworking, fishing and especially being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was very active in the Clear Lake Senior Citizens. He attended the Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church.

Clifford is survived by a daughter, Joan M. Ward Marrs and her husband, Jon, of Marion; one son, James I. Turnbull of Mason City; and one sister, Betty LaCoste and her husband, Gib, of Charles City. He also is survived by nine grandchildren and their families, including Pam Dzick and her children, Dru, Darcy and Dana, of Clear Lake; Jeanine Turnbull of Clear Lake; Brad Turnbull, his wife, Cheryl, and their children, Brandis and Jennifer, of Siren, Wis.; Brian Turnbull and his children, Mitch and Jamie, of Colorado; Todd Turnbull and his children, Rebecca and Victoria, of Dallas, Texas; James Turnbull and his wife, Andrea, and their children, Cole and Mikayla, of Clear Lake; Troy Turnbull and his wife, Patty, of Nora Springs; and Scott Turnbull of LuVerne.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona, in 1984; one son, Joel, in 1986; one brother, Roger Turnbull; two sisters, Pearl Davison and Lucille Swender; two grandsons, Kevin and David Ward; and one son-in-law, Gary R. Ward.

HAMPTON - Charles "Chuck" H. VanWert, 82, of Hampton, died Thursday (Jan. 27, 2000) at the Hampton Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 7, at the Hampton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary VanWert officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home.

ROY E. HENLINE

GREENE - Funeral services for Roy E. Henline, 93, of 220 N. Main, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Galen Smith officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel, with a public scripture service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to Hospice of North Iowa, Greene Betterment or the First Presbyterian Church.

Roy E. Henline was born May 14, 1906, near Lexington, McLean County, Ill., a son of Alvyn and Della Rebecca (Davis) Henline, and died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene of cancer.

As a child, he moved with his family to near Independence where he attended rural Buchanan County schools. In 1928, he began working for the Chevrolet Motor Co. in Flint, Mich., and later worked for John Deere and Caterpillar in Peoria.

He was united in marriage to Olive Lula Grusy on Oct. 19, 1941, at the Eureka Christian Church in Eureka, Ill. They moved to Greene in 1944 where he joined his brother, Kenneth, in partnership in the welding shop. In later years, Roy operated a shop of his own which he operated until he sold it to Tim Gansen. Roy continued to work for T & M Welding until his retirement.

Roy was an avid outdoor sportsman who enjoyed all forms of hunting, trapshooting and fishing. His trapshooting earned him many awards in tournaments sponsored by area gun clubs. He enjoyed bowling and gardening and will be remembered for his homemade schnapps, "Don't cha know."

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greene.

Living family members include his loving wife, Ollie; two sisters, Jessie Crabb of Lakewood, Calif., and Dorothy Richardson of Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother-in-law, C.S. "Mac" Kaiser, of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kenneth Henline; one sister, Mildred Susan Kaiser; and four half-brothers, Russell, Wendell, Nelson and Fred Henline.

DONALD W. LATHROP

OSAGE - Donald W. Lathrop, 84, of Osage, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.

Don was born June 24, 1915, on a farm near Guthrie Center, the son of Arthur W. and Ruby (Brand) Lathrop. After the death of his parents, Don was raised by his foster parents, Vern and Pearl Mahan.

He was educated in rural schools and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1934. He graduated from Northwest Institute of Medical Technology in Minneapolis as a laboratory and x-ray technologist. He worked in Monmouth, Ill., Mason City, Cresco and for 28 years at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage.

Don was united in marriage to Jean Idel Klar on Nov. 28, 1952, at the United Methodist Church in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur L. Hill officiating. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, of Osage; four daughters, Kay Bartrom of Liberty, Mo., Donna Sandvik of Colorado Springs, Colo., Linda Lathrop of Chicago, Ill., and Lori Neve and her husband, Doug, of Nora Springs; a son, Paul Lathrop and his wife, Pam, of Mason City; five grandchildren, Jason Sandvik of Fort Collins, Colo., Ross and Nikki Bartrom of Liberty, Mo., and Pattie and Bryan Lathrop of Mason City; two sisters, Ruth Lathrop and Ruby Charter, both of Madrid; a brother, Arthur Lathrup, of Dallas Center; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, foster parents, a sister and two brothers.

KAITLIN MARIE HANSON

CLEAR LAKE - Kaitlin Marie Hanson, 2-year-old daughter of Todd and Tracey Hanson, 17689 Eagle Ave., died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., with the Rev. Robert Towner of St. John's Episcopal Church, Mason City, officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel and will continue from noon until time of services on Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kaitlin Marie Hanson Memorial Fund.

Kaitlin Marie Hanson was born Jan. 18, 1998, at Mason City, daughter of Todd and Tracey (Osburn) Hanson.

Kaitlin loved to color on everything. She liked to munch on cookies, cheese and suckers, along with a bottle of milk. She loved dancing to music, talking on her play phone, going to the park and swinging and she especially enjoyed riding the Barbie Jeep with her sister, Haley. Anywhere that you would see Kaitlin, you would find her with her blanket, bottle and baby.

Kaitlin will be deeply missed by her parents, Todd and Tracey Hanson; two sisters, Haley and Lauren Hanson, of Clear Lake; her maternal grandparents, Jeffrey and Roberta Osburn of Cleveland, Ohio; her paternal grandparents, Jim and Julie Hanson of Clear Lake; her maternal great-grandparents, Joe and Rhea DeCaro of Cleveland, Ohio; paternal great-grandparents, Harold and Alice Kramer of Clear Lake and Anna Mae Schmitz of Independence; one aunt, Kim Christy and her husband, Cole, of Chandler, Ariz.; two uncles, Bill Osburn and his wife, Marilyn, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Matt Osburn and his wife, Chrislyn, of Denver, Colo.; and four cousins, Cody and Tyler Christy and Sebastian and A.J. Osburn.

She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Pam Osburn.

VERNON C. GRONBACH

CLEAR LAKE - Vernon C. Gronbach, 83, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Galilean Lutheran Church, Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Peter Narum officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Galilean Lutheran Church.

Vernon was born Oct. 9, 1916, near Livermore, the son of Christian Carl and Alma Susannah (Zentner) Gronbach. He graduated from Fairfield High School.

He married Evelyn Pueggel on Aug. 22, 1943. She died on Oct. 10, 1979.

He married Lillie (Hinrichsen) Hisler on Sept. 19, 1981.

Vernon farmed 35 years near Clear Lake and Rockwell. He also was custodian at the Cerro Gordo County Court House for 12 years. In addition, he was an agent for Cerro Gordo County Mutual Insurance.

Vernon was an active member of Galilean Lutheran Church, a church council member and a Sunday school teacher in previous congregations. He and his wife wintered in Texas for 13 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lillie Gronbach; one son, Philip Gronbach and his wife, Anne, of Sterling, Ill.; one daughter, Sue Davis, of Cresco; two stepdaughters, Barbara Miller and her husband, Joseph, of Lake View, Ark., and Marilyn Matteson of Fort Dodge; one sister, Maxine Paine and her husband, Marvinn, of Mason City; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Evelyn.

ADELYNE WRIGHT

CRESCO - Adelyne Wright, 87, of Cresco, died Sunday (Jan. 30, 2000) at the Cresco Care Center of natural causes.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Cresco with burial at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Sunset Rest Cemetery at Northwood.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

She is survived by her sons, the Rev. Gary Lee of Cresco and Bruce Lee of Decorah; two stepsons, David Wright of Stow, Ohio, and Jim Wright, of Boulder, Colo.; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, John Lee, and her husbands, Sophus Lee in 1967 and Hugh Wright in 1977.

STANLEY E. WILLSON

HOLLAND, Mich. - Stanley E. Willson, 85, of Holland, Mich., died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at Inn of Freedom Village in Holland. He was a native of Mason City, Iowa, and a former resident of Kalamazoo and Northport, Mich.

He was a kind and friendly man who loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed music, photography and traveling across the United States. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him.

He was born in Mason City and educated in its public schools. He was a band director in schools in Iowa, Oklahoma, Alabama, Illinois and Michigan. He played French horn in the Birmingham, Ala., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Tri-City-Davenport, Iowa, symphonies.

He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and received an M.A. degree from the University of Iowa.

He was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a professional music fraternity.

Following retirement he moved to the Leelanau Peninsula where he was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport, Mich.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy; his children, Sharon and Norman Brazill and Alan and Nancy Willson, of Kalamazoo, and Stanley Jr. and Laurie Willson, of Ludington; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Alonzo Willson of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Crill, of Kalamazoo; and his parents, A.L. and Lillie Willson, of Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, in the auditorium of Freedom Village in Holland, Mich.

Memorials may be given to Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport, Mich.; the Leelanau Conservancy in Leland, Mich., or to a charity of choice.

VIOLA M. BENTZIN

MANLY - Viola M. Bentzin, 72, a resident of rural Ottertail, Minn., formerly of Manly, died Saturday (Jan. 29, 2000) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Olson Funeral Home Chapel, Fergus Falls, Minn., with the Rev. Ron Henely officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the chapel.

Funeral services will also be 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings of the Bethel United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday and one hour prior to services on Friday at the chapel.

Viola was born on May 29, 1927, in Worth County, Iowa, the daughter of Alfred and Tena (Wirtjes) Schmidt.

She was united in marriage to Arran W. Bentzin on Feb. 18, 1951, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. The couple moved from Manly in 1973 to the Battle Lake area, where they owned and operated the Red Lantern Resort on Ottertail Lake for 20 years. She moved to Rush Lake, rural Ottertail, in 1994, where she lived until her death.

Viola very much enjoyed playing bingo, collecting Beanie Babies, her flower gardens, doing crafts and traveling with her daughter, Carla.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Arran; one infant daughter, Cynthia; a son, Michael; her parents, Alfred and Tena Schmidt; a brother, Dennis; and one sister, Dorthea.

Survivors include two sons, Gary Bentzin and his wife, Annette, of Saline, Mich., and Bruce Bentzin and his wife, Jamia, of Campbell, Minn.; one daughter, Carla Bentzin of Fergus Falls, Minn.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters.

MASON CITY - Cheryl R. Ibarra, 38, of 1006 12th St. N.E., died Friday (Feb. 28, 2000) as of the result of a snowmobile accident on Clear Lake.

ESTHER A. GROTH

OSAGE - Esther A. Groth, 95, formerly of Osage and St. Ansgar, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at the Stacyville Community Nursing Home.

Esther was born Aug. 14, 1904, at Grafton, the daughter of William and Martha (Feldt) Lutz. She was baptized on Sept. 18, 1904, by the Rev. John Landdeck and confirmed on March 28, 1920, by the Rev. Carl Landdeck at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton. The family moved to Otranto in 1913 and she graduated from Otranto High School in 1924.

Esther was united in marriage to Ervin Groth on June 13, 1929, by the Rev. Paul Brammer at her home in Otranto. They farmed near Otranto, Osage and St. Ansgar. Ervin died Aug. 21, 1951. Later Esther moved to Osage where she worked at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital and later with the Mitchell County homemaker health care.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Chris F. Gugel officiating. Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Esther is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Sullivan and her husband, Keith, of Osage and Barbara Rosel and her husband, Richard, of Clear Lake; 13 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Elmer Lutz of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ervin, in 1951; two sons, John and David; and a sister, Elvira Kittleson.

MARJORIE 'MARGE' STALLMAN

SIBLEY - Marjorie "Marge" (Stewart) Stallman, 77, of Sibley, formerly of Crystal Lake, died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Memorial services and burial of the cremains will take place at a later time.

Marjorie Faye Stallman is survived by her husband, Virgil J. Stallman, of Sibley; a son, James Larson and his wife, Barbara, of Crystal Lake; a daughter, Janice Larson, of San Francisco, Calif., along with a sister, Gwen, (Mrs. Bill) Nelson, of Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren, Susan, Mike and Brenda.

ALLENE MILDRED MARKHAM

OSAGE - Allene Mildred Markham, 96, of Osage, died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

She was born Feb. 14, 1903, in Burr Oak Township, Mitchell County, the daughter of Ray and Maude (Hadfield) Markham. She graduated from Osage High School, attended Carleton College, earned her B.A. degree from the University of Iowa and her Master's degree from Columbia University.

Allene taught at "Runge" rural school, 5th and 6th grade in Orchard schools, biology at West High School in Waterloo, Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J., and at Osage High School.

She was a member of the PEO Chapter AW and the United Church of Christ in Osage.

She is survived by two great-nieces, Kari Katcher of Charles City and Kelley Wandro of Des Moines; a great-nephew, Christopher Markham of Des Moines; a foster daughter, Marsha Fisher of Davenport; a special friend, Mary Morey of Osage; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Luvern Markham; a nephew, Kent Markham and his wife, Connie.

Her body was cremated. A graveside inurnment service will take place at the Osage Cemetery at a later date.

Alan was born on July 29, 1953, in Osage, the son of George and Leona (Cummings) Zacharda. He graduated from St. Ansgar Community High School in 1971. He then entered into the United States Navy and served his country in Vietnam.

Alan lived in the Baltimore metro area attending college in the area. He was employed in the computer industry.

Memorials may be directed to the family who are establishing a memorial fund.

Alan was preceded in death by his father and infant brother, Michael.

He is survived by his mother, Leona Zacharda of St. Ansgar; maternal grandmother, Viola Cummings of St. Ansgar; two sisters, Linda Reeves of Denver and Kathy Rezabek and her husband, Ron, of Mason City; two nieces, Heather Reeves and Lindsay Sanchez; two nephews, Ryan Reeves and Brock Rezabek; and many friends in the Baltimore area.

ELSIE MAE CLOWES

HARDY - Funeral services for Elsie Mae Clowes, 83, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Renwick, with the Rev. Karen Dearchs officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in rural Renwick.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Renwick.

Elsie Mae Clowes was born on May 18, 1916 at LuVerne, to Walter and Tillie (Anderson) Hunt. She attended country school near LuVerne and then graduated from the LuVerne High School. Elsie then received her Normal training at the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. Elsie taught country school near LuVerne until 1940.

On Feb. 5, 1940, Elsie was married to W. Donald Clowes at her parents' home in LuVerne. The couple farmed near Renwick until 1968. Donald and Elsie then moved to a farm near Hardy and continued farming until Donald's death in 1992.

Elsie was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Renwick, where she also belonged to the United Methodist Women. Elsie belonged to the Know Your Neighbor Club and the Senior Citizens in Renwick.

She enjoyed sewing and knitting and when she and Donald were farming, Elsie loved to help with the field work and take care of the livestock.

Elsie became a resident of the Long-Term Care Unit in Humboldt in November of 1998. She died there on Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at the age of 83.

Elsie is survived by her three daughters, Dawn Jensen and her husband, Ed, of Wellman, Diane Adam and her husband, Loren, of Gowrie and Donell Doering and her husband, David, of Mason City. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Ryan, Kari, Meagan and Eric Adam and Jenny and Chris Doering. Elsie is also survived by her longtime friend and farming associate, Don Wilson, of Hardy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, Walter and Howard Hunt.

MARBLE ROCK - Memorial services for Glenn W. Mulnix, 52, of 521 College St., Marble Rock, will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Marble Rock with inurnment in the Westside Cemetery in Marble Rock. There will be no visitation.

Glenn W. Mulnix was born May 2, 1947 in Long Beach, Calif., the son of Robert D. and Mildred A. (Westbrook) Mulnix and died Monday (Jan. 31, 2000) at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City of complications of Huntington's Disease.

He received his education at the Paramount High School graduating in 1965. During his youth he was very active in the Boy Scouts. As a young man he began working as a forklift operator for a chemical company in South Gate, Calif. until 1978 when he moved to Marble Rock. He was employed for Tom and Bernie's Market in Marble Rock and later worked part time for the City of Marble Rock.

Glenn enjoyed being in the outdoors. Growing up he enjoyed going on vacation trips with his family and camping. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and taking care of animals.

Living family members include his father, Robert D. Mulnix; and his sister, Jennifer Foutts, both of Beaverton, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his mother in January of 1973; and his brother, Robert, in June of 1995, both of the same affliction.

MASON CITY - Cheryl Ray Ibarra, 38, of 1006 12th St. N.E., died Friday (Jan. 28, 2000) following a snowmobile accident at Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Richard Scheerer officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Cheryl was born in Minot, N.D., on May 16, 1961, to Ray Rime and April (Llewellyn) Demeree. She graduated from the Minot High School and then earned her degree as a construction electrician from Wadena Technical College in Wadena, Minn.

She worked for Curries Manufacturing Company, shipping items worldwide. She was an enthusiastic volunteer for Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa and a real go-getter in her life.

She loved anything pertaining to the outdoors, boating and hot dogging with her water skies, hunting deer with her husband, camping, snowmobiling and riding her bright red Harley.

Her family life was important to her and she had skills in needle point, crafts and ceramics. She sewed some of the neatest Halloween costumes, pillows and curtains.

On August 31, 1991, she was united in marriage to Steve Ibarra at the First Congregational Church where she was a member.

Those thankful in sharing Cheryl's life include her husband, Steve, of Mason City; her two daughters, April Fellman of Staples, Minn., and Sommer Fellman, of Minot, N.D.; her mother, April, and her husband, Dave Demaree, of Minot, N.D.; her father, Ray, and his wife, Kathy Rime, of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Kari and her husband, Charles Chip Dyson, of Houston, Texas, and Candis and her husband, Jamie Rose, of Brandon, Manitoba, Canada; one brother, Tony, and his wife, Robin Demaree, of Minot, N.D.; her maternal grandmother, Maggy, and her husband, Leo Brilz, of Minot N.D.; her paternal grandmother, Laura Rime, of Garrison, N.D.; and many nieces and nephews.

BRITT - Lillian M. Dolphin, 85, of Britt, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Lillian (Rokos) Dolphin was born on Aug. 18, 1914 in Garfield Township near Duncan. She graduated from Hayfield schools in 1933.

On June 4, 1935 she married John Dolphin at Duncan. They lived near Britt in Erin Township where they farmed until 1952. They moved to Britt where Lillian worked as dietary supervisor at the Hancock County Hospital for 27 years.

She was a member of the Jolly Circle Club, a charter member of Tops, and did volunteer work at West View Care Center.

Lillian was a happy, loving and giving person who enjoyed traveling and most of all her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

CLEAR LAKE - Maxine R. (Mrs. Oscar) Davis, 76, of Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Maxine Rose Oehlert was born on Oct. 3, 1923 south of Clear Lake, the daughter of Julius and Leila (King) Oehlert. She graduated from Swaledale High School.

Maxine was united in marriage to Thurman "Oscar" Davis on June 2, 1941 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.

Maxine was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, a member of the Bible Study Group, AmVets Auxiliary, the Christian Women's Club and the ODO Club.

She was a devoted mother, staying at home with her family. She was a great cook and loved her family.

Thankful for being part of Maxine's life are her husband, Oscar, of Clear Lake; her four children, Darlene Porter and her husband, Budd, of Apple Valley, Calif., Linda J. Smeby and her husband, Byron, of Rockwell, Ronald A. Davis and his wife, Russalyn, of Ventura and Rosann Fredin and her husband, Jerry, of Wichita, Kan.; her eight grandchildren, Chad Davis, Craig Davis, Terry Smeby, Todd Smeby, Troy Smeby, Jeremy Fredin, Jaynann Fredin and Christopher Catania; her four great-grandchildren, Ashley Smeby, Morgan Davis, Jordan Smeby and Collin Smeby; and one brother, Howard Oehlert, of Clear Lake and many nieces and nephews.

BELMOND - A. Barbara Peterson, 85, of Belmond, formerly of Goodell, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services for Barbara Peterson will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at the United Methodist Church in Goodell, with Pastor Curtis DeVance officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date in the Amsterdam Cemetery at Goodell.

Agnes Barbara Peterson, the daughter of Lauretz "Peter" and Laura Christie Peterson was born on Dec. 18, 1914, in Twin Lake Township near Goodell. Barbara grew up in the Goodell area where she attended country school at Twin Lake #5. She graduated from Klemme High School in 1932.

Following graduation from high school, Barbara was employed as a housekeeper for several Belmond doctors and other area residents. She was later employed at the Concord Care Center and later the Belmond Health Care Center for 10 years retiring in 1983.

Barbara lived in the Goodell area her entire life, until moving into the Belmond Apartments in 1994.

Barbara was a member of the United Methodist Church in Goodell, where she was a past Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. She enjoyed piecing quilts and going to visit relatives and friends.

She was a longtime member of the Goodell American Legion Auxiliary and held many county and district offices. Barbara was active in the Goodell and Belmond Senior Citizens, Meservey Kitchen Lassie Band, Jolly Workers and Friendly Neighbor Club.

Barbara is survived by two sisters, Elaine and her husband, Ernest Woiwod, of Garner and Lula and her husband, Frederick Bell, of Klemme; two brothers, John Peterson and his wife, Mavis, of Belmond and Christie Peterson and his wife, Viola "Blondie," of Goodell; two sisters-in-law, Della Peterson, of Belmond and Edna Peterson, of Corwith; one brother-in-law, Leslie Meres, of Arizona and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, two brothers, one brother-in-law, one niece and one nephew.

FRANKLIN KENNETH VAN DUZER

CLEAR LAKE - Franklin Kenneth Van Duzer, 81, formerly of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City, with military graveside honors by the Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the chapel.

The family of Franklin Kenneth Van Duzer has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Ken was born on Feb. 3, 1918 in Menlo, Iowa, the son of Thomas Ralph and Ethel B. (Mount) Van Duzer. He graduated from Menlo High School and was engaged in farming with his brother, Wayne Van Duzer, prior to entering the service in 1940.

During World War II, he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, which was the first airborne artillery unit to land in France on D-Day. Ken received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in honor of service to his country.

Upon returning to civilian life he farmed from 1946-1955, the last five years in Mason City.

In 1955, he co-founded with J.A. Risvold, Ris-Van Inc. in Belmond, one of the pioneer firms in the liquid fertilizer field. The firm quickly became the nation's largest producer of complete analysis liquid fertilizer.

In 1962 he bought an interest in Legreid Farm Service Company of Mason City, which manufactured dry fertilizer and distributed both dry and liquid fertilizer.

Ken, along with several partners, established Ris-Van Realty Co., Inc. in 1964, continuing to own and operate this for many years and personally specializing in the sale of farmland.

Ken maintained a lifetime interest and love of farming, which was shown in every endeavor he pursued and continued to annually help with the harvesting of crops on his farms for many years.

He was one of the original founders and served as a director for 15 years of Guardsmen Life Insurance in Des Moines; one of the founders and a director of Community State Bank in Clear Lake for many years; served as president of the North Central Iowa Board of Realtors; past member of the Clear Lake Lions Club and former member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake and later Ventura.

Ken will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Julie Elting and her husband, Jim, of Madison, Conn. and Marilyn Johnson, of Clear Lake; one sister, Marjory Van Duzer, of Mason City; and four grandchildren, Ryan Elting, of Botswana, Africa, Andrew Elting, of Madison, Conn., Abbie Johnson, of Tempe, Ariz. and Gregory Johnson, of Clear Lake; as well as other relatives and friends.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Charles Wayne Van Duzer.

MILDRED JANE BRINKMAN

COLO - Mildred Jane Brinkman, 94, of Colo, died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at the Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls from respiratory failure.

She was born July 31, 1905 in Collins, Iowa, the daughter of John B. and Minnie (Shearer) Kimberley. After graduating from high school, Mildred attended Capital City Commercial College and then worked at the Collins and Mingo Banks.

She was united in marriage to Norman Henry (N.H.) Brinkman on June 4, 1927 in Collins, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1975. She was a homemaker and was very active in her church and community. She enjoyed music and taught piano lessons for many years.

Mildred was a member of the Colo United Methodist Church where she had served 35 years as church organist, UMW, Cloverleaf Club, Order of the Eastern Star, of which she was a past state officer, Priscilla Bridge Club and a former member of the board of directors Exchange State Bank of Collins.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Maxine Brinkman, of Mason City, and Harold and Jan Brinkman, of Nevada, Iowa; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary J. and Dean Harms, of Ames; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Minnie Maxwell, of Washington, Iowa and Kay Armstrong of Nevada, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson, five brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Colo United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Russ Burnett and the Rev. Jim Louk officiating. Burial will be in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.

MASON CITY - Lorenzo Lee Burgess, 78, formerly of Mason City, died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City, with Lt. Jon Augenstein of the Salvation Army officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a flag folding ceremony conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Lorenzo Lee Burgess was born March 29, 1921, in Mason City, son of Roscoe and Elsie Burgess. He grew up in Mason City and served in the Navy during World War II. He was a mechanic and painter throughout the years.

Lorenzo was Golden Gloves State Champion in 1947. He loved fishing. He spent the last four years at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

He is survived by one brother, Jackie L. Burgess, of Mason City; and three sisters, Betty Steece, of Mason City, Joann Anderson, of Clear Lake and Lola Boongarden, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

Delores Marie (Caquelin) Stadtlander, the daughter of Raymond and Emma (Brandt) Caquelin, was born on Sept. 17, 1925 at Woolstock, Iowa. Delores grew up in the Livermore area. She attended and graduated from the Meservey High School in Meservey in 1943.

On Aug. 12, 1948, she was united in marriage to Luvern Stadtlander. The couple had three children, Sherry, Curtis and Sandra.

Delores was a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey where she was very active. She taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and helped in the kitchen for numerous events.

She also had a great love for all kinds of flowers and was a member of the Ventura Federated Flower Club for many years.

Delores died on Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at the Belmond Health Care Center in Belmond.

Survivors include her husband, Luvern, of Belmond; three children, Sherry Kreger, of Gresham, Ore., Curtis Stadtlander and his wife, Diane, of Goodell, and Sandra Smith, of Nevada, Iowa; six grandchildren, Heather and Erica Kreger, Holly and Andy Stadtlander and Alyssa and Matthew Smith; and two brothers, Dale Caquelin, of Webster City and Clifford Caquelin, of Hokah, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Sonny Caquelin.

FRANKLIN KENNETH VAN DUZER

CLEAR LAKE - Franklin Kenneth Van Duzer, 81, formerly of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West, Mason City, with military graveside honors by the Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the chapel.

The family of Franklin Kenneth Van Duzer has requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory.

Ken was born on Feb. 3, 1918, in Menlo, Iowa, the son of Thomas Ralph and Ethel B. (Mount) Van Duzer. He graduated from Menlo High School and was engaged in farming with his brother, Wayne Van Duzer, prior to entering the service in 1940.

During World War II, he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division, which was the first airborne artillery unit to land in France on D-Day. Ken received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star in honor of service to his country.

Upon returning to civilian life he farmed from 1946-1955, the last five years in Mason City.

In 1955, he co-founded with J.A. Risvold, Ris-Van Inc. in Belmond, one of the pioneer firms in the liquid fertilizer field. The firm quickly became the nation's largest producer of complete analysis liquid fertilizer.

In 1962 he bought an interest in Legreid Farm Service Company of Mason City, which manufactured dry fertilizer and distributed both dry and liquid fertilizer.

Ken, along with several partners, established Ris-Van Realty Co., Inc. in 1964, continuing to own and operate this for many years and personally specializing in the sale of farmland.

Ken maintained a lifetime interest and love of farming which was shown in every endeavor he pursued and continued to annually help with the harvesting of crops on his farms for many years.

He was one of the original founders and served as a director for 15 years of Guardsmen Life Insurance in Des Moines; one of the founders and a director of Community State Bank in Clear Lake for many years; served as president of the North Central Iowa Board of Realtors; past member of the Clear Lake Lions Club and former member of the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake and later Ventura.

Ken will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Julie Elting and her husband, Jim, of Madison, Conn., and Marilyn Johnson and her husband, Steve, of Clear Lake; one sister, Marjory Van Duzer, of Mason City; and four grandchildren, Ryan Elting, of Botswana, Africa, Andrew Elting, of Madison, Conn., Abbie Johnson, of Tempe, Ariz., and Gregory Johnson, of Clear Lake; as well as other relatives and friends.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Charles Wayne Van Duzer.

ERMA N. SMITH

GREENE - Funeral services for Erma N. Smith, 91, formerly of 405 N. High, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Brethren in Greene, with Pastor Gene Burry officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene, where there will be a public scripture service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Erma Nadine Shook was born June 12, 1908, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a daughter of Paul D. and Myrtle A. (McRoberts) Shook and died Wednesday (Feb. 2, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

She received her education in the rural Coldwater Township Schools and graduated from the Greene High School in 1926. She attended the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and later taught for eight years in rural schools in Butler, Bremer and Floyd counties.

On May 31, 1934, she was united in marriage to Galen Allen Smith at her parents home west of Plainfield. Mr. and Mrs. Smith farmed in the rural Butler, Floyd and Chickasaw County area for 36 years before moving into Greene in 1970.

Erma was a faithful member of the Church of the Brethren having served her church in the local and district level. She taught Sunday school for many years, was Sunday school superintendent, leader of the Woman's fellowship and sang in the church choir. She was never reluctant to share her faith with her family members and friends and always included them by name in her daily prayers.

She enjoyed reading poetry and inspirational readings and often times gathering and sharing with family and friends. Erma will be remembered as an excellent cook.

Living family members include two daughters, Darlys Smith, of Austin, Minn. and Janan and her husband, Don Wunsch, of Ankeny; two sons, Roger and his wife, Joyce Smith, of Davenport, and Sherwin and his wife, Bertha Smith, of Shell Rock; 11 grandchildren and their spouses, Bryan and Becky Smith, Daniel Smith, Lonny and Kim Smith, Tim and Jackie Smith, Keith and Kelly Smith, Kevin and Mary Snydersmith, Jeremy Wunsch, and Jonathan Wunsch; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Irene Williams, of Goldfield; two brothers, Merlin and his wife, Ellen Joy Shook, of Auburn, Calif. and Paul and his wife, Jeri Shook, of Neoga, Ill.; and one sister-in-law, Maude Kingery, of Greene.

She leaves to join her daughter, Ann Marlene who died at birth; her husband, Galen, on April 22, 1994; her parents; and one brother, Merrill Shook.

MARJORIE M. BRUNNER

NORA SPRINGS - Marjorie M. Brunner, 97, of 8 Summit Heights, died Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Hillside Cemetery, Marble Rock, with the Rev. Richard Pippert, of the Nora Springs United Methodist Church, officiating.

Marjorie was born Feb. 18, 1902, the daughter of L.D. and Nellie E. (Ackley) Brunner in Marble Rock. She grew up in Marble Rock and later graduated from Mason City High School. Following high school, she attended Iowa State Teachers College and graduated in 1936.

During World War II, Marjorie moved to California where she was employed by the United States government. After her stint in California, Marjorie returned to Evanston, Ill. to attend and later graduate from the Northwestern. Marjorie was a lifelong learner and supporter of education.

In the years to follow, Marjorie began her teaching career. Her career lasted 30 years and she taught at Nora Springs, Cedar Rapids and Royal, Iowa. Upon retirement, Marjorie came back home to Nora Springs.

Marjorie was a staunch Republican who enjoyed participating in the election process and talking politics with her friends. She was very active in her community including being on the Nora Springs Library Board for 10 years, with some of those serving as president. She was very vocal and supportive of the new library that was built.

In Marjorie's spare time she enjoyed sharing her many talents with those she came in contact with. She also was very interested in sharing her love of flowers, books and her abilities to host grand dinner parties with her friends. She was also an extensive traveler who was always looking for new places to visit.

Marjorie was a member of the Nora Springs United Methodist Church and Delta Kappa Gamma International Honorary Society for Woman in Education, Mason City Chapter.

Marjorie is survived by many cousins and special friends.

Ms. Brunner was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Dorothy and one brother, Russell.

LILLIAN M. DOLPHIN

BRITT - Lillian M. Dolphin, 85, of Britt, passed away Tuesday (Feb. 1, 2000) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt, with the Rev. Marvin Bries officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation was held on Thursday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, with a 7:30 p.m. parish wake service. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services today at the Church.

Lillian (Rokos) Dolphin was born on Aug. 18, 1914, in Garfield Township near Duncan. She graduated from Hayfield schools in 1933.

On June 4, 1935, she married John Dolphin at Duncan. They lived near Britt in Erin Township where they farmed until 1952. They moved to Britt where Lillian worked as dietary supervisor at the Hancock County Hospital for 27 years.

She was a member of the Jolly Circle Club, a charter member of TOPS, and did volunteer work at West View Care Center.

Lillian was a happy, loving and giving person who enjoyed traveling and most of all her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

MASON CITY - Dorothy S. Steil, 83, of 17396 Kingbird Ave., died Thursday (Feb. 3, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Daniel Christensen of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Leland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be no visitation as her wish was to be cremated.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa in her name.

Dorothy was born to Roy L. and Emma (Mueller) Damron on Aug. 27, 1916, in St. Louis. She received her education in the St. Louis school system.

She married Leonard L. Steil on Nov. 10, 1945, in St. Louis, and moved to Mason City, where she lived until her death. As young woman, Dorothy worked in the clerical pool for General Motors in St. Louis. After moving to Mason City, she worked as an Avon sales representative in the late 1950s. She later worked in the County Treasurer's office and for the County Health Nurse's office. She retired in 1979.

Dorothy spent many happy hours at the bowling alley. She bowled in two different leagues. Later in life, she took up golf and enjoyed it, too. But, playing cards was one of her passions. She played bridge, cribbage and poker.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose Lodge.

Her memory will be cherished by her son, Kenneth Steil and wife, Joycelyn, of Leland; granddaughter, Wendy Steil, of Highland, Ind.; grandson, Todd Steil and wife, Stacey, of Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Jacob, of Des Moines; brother, John Dameron and his wife, Lillian, of Miamisburg, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded by her parents; husband, Leonard, in 1977; and a sister.

ROCKWELL CITY - Dr. Paul J. Underriner, 72, died Friday (Feb. 4, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Paul J. Underriner was born on Sept. 3, 1927 at Sioux City, the third child of Edwin and Lillian Underriner. Upon graduating from Trinity High School in 1945, he served with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He graduated from Morningside College and obtained his Doctorate of Optometry from Chicago College of Optometry in Chicago in 1953.

He was married to Patricia Deneen at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg on Sept. 8, 1951. Together they raised five children, Kathryn, Debra, Julie, David and Michael.

Paul established his practice of optometry in 1953 in Rockwell City and retired in 1997. Paul was active in the community and his church - freely giving of his time and talents. He was a charter member of the Rockwell City Rotary.

He was a volunteer for more than 22 years for the Boy Scouts of America, serving in various capacities. Paul received the Order of St. George, the highest honor given by the Catholic Church to an adult leader in Boy Scouts. He worked actively in helping to build the swimming pool.

He was a licensed private pilot. Being a great hobbyist with many interests, Paul shared his love of flying, model airplanes, building, snowmobiling, water sports, and stained glass art with many. At home, he enjoyed gardening and his roses.

A member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society, Paul was former church director and finance committee member. Paul was charitable with others and his church.

His greatest legacy will be what he gave to friends and family. His love of people was evident by his ability to listen, to offer insight and to always be there for others. His storytelling and humor and fun-loving spirit made others' lives brighter and he will be cherished by all. His dedication to his family knew no end. And his faith was unfaltering and strong.

Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia; four children, a daughter, Debra and Robert Hoffa, of Carmel, Ind., a daughter, Julie and Dean Wright, of Clear Lake, a son, David and Julie Underriner, of St. Ansgar, and a son, Michael and Janelle Underriner, of Littleton, Colo; one brother, Dr. Robert E. Underriner and Peggy, of Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Dr. Mary Rich and Dr. Fred Rich, of McFarland, Wis., and Ruth Hagedorn and Virgil, of Williamette, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Bette Richardson, of Webster City; and many special nieces and nephews.

Paul's "crown jewels" are his 11 grandchildren, Angela, Christina, Elizabeth, Jessica and Kimberly Hoffa, of Carmel, Ind.; Nicholas and Diana Wright, of Clear Lake; Deneen, Jared and Celeste Underriner, of St. Ansgar, and Katherine "Kit" Underriner, of Littleton, Colo.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Lillian; by his daughter, Kathryn Ann; and by his granddaughter, Chelsea Marie Wright.
