HELEN DAVIS

FOREST CITY - Helen Davis, 85, of Forest City, died Dec. 19 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Betty Jo and David Levad in Yakima, Wash.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at First Methodist Church, Forest City. Viewing will be at the church prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark, Forest City, is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Pauline Davis was born June 13, 1915, in Madelia, Minn., to Joseph and Margaret Cumberland Davies. She graduated from Madelia High School and attended South Dakota Teachers College.

She married Delton Davis in 1939.

Helen taught school, raised her children and participated in many community projects while living in Fertile. She moved to Forest City in 1959 and began a second career as secretary in the Winnebago County Engineer's office. She retired in 1977 and devoted herself to family, friends and volunteer work.

She served on the Forest City Park Board for many years and was a volunteer in Mrs. Paulson's kindergarten class, the Meals on Wheels program, the Good Samaritan Nursing Home and the First Methodist Church. She loved playing Mrs. Santa Claus for the pre-school children and entertaining the neighborhood children who came to visit her after school. She was an active member of the Methodist Church and the Kum Along Club. She was a Gold Star Mother and member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Mrs. Davis is survived by two daughters, Betty Jo and David Levad of Yakima, Wash., and Kathy and Glen Tobey of Duluth, Minn.; a special family, Chris and Mary Juhl of Garner; 14 grandchildren, Mark, Michael, Patrick, Timothy and Sarah Levad, Diane Tim, Gina and Joseph DiConcini, Nicholas and Olivia Mancini, Thomas, Alison, Jeffrey and Molly Juhl; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Elizabeth Anderson of Madelia; a brother, William and Ardyce Davies of White Bear Lake, Minn.; a dear sister-in-law, Kathryn Davies, of Pine River, Minn.; and her dearest friend, Mrs. Jane Ebaugh of Forest City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her infant sister, Dorothy; her brother, Burton Davies; and her son, Robert Davis, in Vietnam.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to early childhood programs in Forest City Public Schools or the children's section of the Forest City Public Library, in care of Petersen Lund Funeral Home.

MASON CITY - Martha Bieth, 80, of Mason City, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral Mass will be held Noon on Thursday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., in Mason City, with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating.

CRYSTAL LAKE - Mildred B. Lonning, 96, died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, with the Rev. Gary Marzoff officiating. Burial will be at Crystal Lake Township Cemetery in Crystal Lake.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt and one hour before services at the Church.

BEN G. VIERKANT

NORA SPRINGS - Ben G. Vierkant, 84, of 26 Gaylord, Nora Springs, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs, with military honors by the American Legion Post 449.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs and again after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs.

Ben was born May 17, 1916, in Goodell, Iowa, the son of George and Katie (VanOsten) Vierkant. He moved to a farm southwest of Nora Springs, Iowa, in 1932. Ben served in the Army during World War II in the 41st Infantry Division.

Following the service, he moved back to rural Nora Springs where he farmed and married G. Carma Neil on Aug. 11, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Nora Springs where he worked at the Fullerton Lumberyard in Nora Springs and at Armour's where he worked for 30 years.

Ben was a loving and caring Dad and always had a special gift for his children.

Ben was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, the 41st Infantry Division Association and the American Legion Post 449 in Nora Springs.

Ben is survived by his wife, G. Carma Vierkant, of Nora Springs; three daughters, Diane Pigg and her husband, David, of Jacksonville, Ill., Debra Vierkant, of Eugene, Ore. and Denise Gilbert and her husband, Roger, of Eugene, Ore.; three grandchildren, Dr. Jason Pigg and his wife, Aimee, of Ruston, La., Jeff Pigg and his wife, Kristi, of Bondurant, Iowa, and Melissa Gilbert, of Eugene, Ore., and one brother, Henry G. Vierkant, of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and another sister, Tillie Vaughn; and his two nephews, Roger and Gary Vaughn.

MASON CITY - Raymond H. Heitland, 78, USA Healthcare Center and formerly of 320 26th St. S.W., both in Mason City, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Reformed Church, 2029 Jonquil Ave. in rural Sheffield, with the Rev. Joel Dahlen, pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of Mason City, and the Rev. Arthur Zewert, Zion pastor officiating. Burial will be in the Zion Reformed Cemetery, rural Sheffield.

CLETUS 'JACK' LAMBERT

MASON CITY - Cletus 'Jack' Lambert, 67, of 509 Eighth St. S.E., died Thursday (Dec. 21, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000) at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cletus was born Sept. 9, 1933, the son of Jodie and Bertha (Richards) Lambert in Michie, Tenn. He graduated from Michie High School and then went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force. Jack dedicated 20 years to the Air Force during this time he achieved the rank of Tech. Sergeant.

During his four tours of duty, he was involved in Korea, Japan, Italy and Vietnam. During his time in Vietnam, his eye for taking pictures was directed towards being a combat photographer. He also took a liking to the children at the orphanage, where he helped out in any manner possible. In 1967, Jack came back to the United States, where he made his home in Virginia. Four years later, in 1971, Jack and Beverly made their way to Mason City where he found employment with the Mason City Police Department. Jack had a passion for his career as the animal control officer where he grew a deep appreciation for the animal world.

On Sept. 4, 1955, he was united in marriage to Beverly Kay Lewis in the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. Jack was a Past Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge. He was member of the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed the quiet hours he spent in his garden attending to his flowers and listening to the sweet music of the birds.

He could be found reading the words that created a picture of the Civil War, in which, his grandfather and great grandfather participated in. Jack's heart was devoted to the needs of others, especially his family.

Due to the hard times during Jack's youth, he made it a ritual and a promise to himself that his family would not go without shoes and coats. With this in mind, Jack would send his family coats, shoes and money with a note attached that read, "don't tell mom.''

Left to cherish and honor his memory are two children, Linda Judge Peterson and her husband, Andrew, of Coon Rapids, Minn., and David Allen Lambert, of Altoona, Iowa; one sister, Minerva Fowler of Michie, Tenn.; one brother, Douglas Lambert of Michie, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Lindsay and Kristin Judge, and Charles and Timothy Peterson.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife Beverly, one week to the day and one brother, J.C. Lambert.

CHARLES CITY - Richard J. Koebler, 60, of 407 N. Jackson St. died Wednesday (Dec. 20, 2000) at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City.

A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Hospice Office of North Iowa, Charles City Satellite, 1003 Gilbert St. in Charles City. Inurnment will be in the Spring at the Riverside Cemetery in Charles City.

CHARLES CITY - Ruth I. (Mrs. William) Koebler, 82, of 1006 Ellis Drive and formerly of 405 Clark St. in Charles City, died Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at home.

MASON CITY - Mary D. Johnson, 80, of 1025 N. Polk Ave. died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

BEVERLY J. SHEEHY

Beverly Jean Sheehy, 16120 245th St., Mason City, was born on March 15, 1927, to Lee and Ina (Daniels) Roberts in Mason City and died in the Grand Cayman Islands Friday, Dec. 22. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School. She married Edward C. Sheehy on April 22, 1950 and to this union, one son, Lee Edward, was born. She was a devoted wife and mother.

Bev worked at Standard Oil in Mason City and moved to the Des Moines office in 1950, working a total of 21 years. In 1959 the family moved to Minneapolis. They moved to Mason City in 1969. She was employed by Unisys and retired in 1989.

Bev loved to work as is shown in her work history. After retirement, she enjoyed working bingo at the Elks. In recent years, she volunteered on a regular basis at the Girl Scout Council of North Iowa, answering phones, handling mailings, etc. She loved meeting people and making new friends.

Her greatest joy in life was her family and most importantly, her son, who brought her happiness, pride and strength.

One of her main interests was traveling and during this past year visited Branson, Missouri, LaJolla, California, France and most recently the Grand Cayman Islands. She had a cruise and a trip to Ireland scheduled for 2001. When she wasn't traveling, she enjoyed playing cards weekly with friends.

Bev was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and undergoing chemotherapy. She became critically ill on her most recent trip and succumbed to the after-effects of her last treatment.

Bev was a member of the Elks, Women of the Moose, and the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include her son, Lee Edward, Minneapolis, and his special friend, Jennifer; two beloved nieces, Jane Popouchis and daughter, Nikki; Sandy (John) Funk and children, Lisa (Hansen) and Rob; nephew Bert L. Roberts Jr. and son, Travis, and her husband's loving family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter-in-law, Linda Jadwin, and brother, Bert L. Roberts Sr. and his wife, Judy, and a sister in infancy.

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated. Visitation for friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Private inurnment services will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may direct them to Lee Sheehy, 110 Bank St. S.E., #301, Minneapolis, Minn. 55414. A memorial fund has been established. Funds will be distributed in her name to the Girl Scouts of North Iowa and the Breast Cancer Research Fund.

DOROTHY ANNA (KRAUS) NORRIS

MASON CITY - Dorothy Anna (Kraus) Norris, 86, of 302 Second St. N.E. died Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist Church in Mason City, with the Rev. Scott Holmes officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Dorothy A. Norris Memorial Fund.

Dorothy (Kraus) Norris, 86, passed away Saturday (Dec. 23, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center after a lingering illness of Alzheimers disease. Dorothy Anna (Andrews) Kraus Norris was born at Hiteman, Iowa, on March 17, 1914, the daughter, of Benjamin S. and Anna F. (Walker) Andrews. She was raised in the Moulton, Charles City and Sheffield areas. She attended the Sheffield schools.

She married James Kraus in 1930. They adopted and raised their son, Larry, while residing in Mason City. Dorothy was an excellent waitress having served many friends at the Crystal Lunch and Pantry Cafes. After the death of James in 1981, she worked at the Back Door Laundromat until she retired.

In 1984 she was united in marriage to Earl Norris until his passing in 1990. Her family wants everyone to remember Dorothy as the happy busy person she was, always willing and eager to help everyone.

Dorothy loved to dance and have a good time. Her grandchildren were the pride of her life. How proud she would have been of her new great-grandchild! Dorothy was an active member of the DAV serving as President several terms. She was commander of the Women's Auxiliary.

Memorials may be made to the Dorothy Norris Memorial Fund.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Larry Kraus and his wife, Sue, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Jackie Kraus, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Kimberly, Kari and Kathy, of Mason City, and Kevin and his wife, Jana, of Northwood; one great-great-grandchild, Bailey Kraus; daughter, of Kevin and Jana. She is also survived by one sister, Mabel Abrams and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; four sisters; and three brothers.

HAMPTON - Phyllis A. Atkinson, 83, of Hampton, died Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Phyllis A. Atkinson was born on March 3, 1917, in Clark County, Iowa, the daughter of F.L. and Blanche (Loynachan) Jennings. She attended and received her education in the Hampton School system, graduating from Hampton High School.

She was united in marriage to Clifford Rueben Atkinson on Nov. 12, 1939, in Hampton. Phyllis played an integral part in the privately owned Jennings Dry Goods business in Hampton until her retirement in 1976, spending winters in Texas with her husband.

She enjoyed doing stained glass works, playing Bridge, crossword puzzles, reading, cooking, and entertaining, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and friends.

She was a member of "As You Like it" Women's Club and local mothers' club, both in Hampton.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Clifford Rueben Atkinson, of Hampton; three sons, Alan Jennings Atkinson, of Indianpolis, Ind., Philip Herbert Atkinson and his wife, Brenda, of Maple Grove, Minn., and Michael James Atkinson and his wife, Kathy, of Hampton; six grandchildren, Tracy Atkinson, Carolyn Atkinson, Christopher Atkinson, Andrew Atkinson, Toni Atkinson, and Teresa Wright; two great-grandchildren, Vanessa Wright and Dominic Wright; as well as other relatives and friends.

Her parents; a brother, Richard Graydon Jennings; and a sister, Elizabeth Betty Richter, preceded her in death.

RICEVILLE - Mary Alice Buttolph, 65, of Riceville, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at her home.

ROY WILLIAM GALLION

MANLY - Roy William Gallion, 92, died Thursday (Dec. 21, 2000) at the Manly Nursing & Rehab Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, with the Rev. Robert Cumings officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly, and one hour prior to service time Wednesday at the church.

Roy William Gallion was born Oct. 16, 1908, on a farm 1 mile south of the IOOF Home at the 4 corners in Cerro Gordo County, the son of William V. G. and Bertha (Cookman) Gallion. In the spring of 1911 the family moved to a farm near Wheelerwood. A short time later they then moved to a farm southeast of Manly.

He received his education in the Manly school system, graduating from Manly High School in 1926. After completing his schooling, he started farming in the Lime Creek Township, rural Cerro Gordo County.

He was united in marriage to Helen Louise Stickfort on June 22, 1930, at her parents' home in Manly. She preceded him in death on Oct. 7, 1995.

After their marriage they continued to farm for 64 years in the Lime Creek Township, rural Cerro Gordo County. Roy also herded cattle for Oswald Strand in Manly, sold seed for Funks Seed Company and was a carpenter and bricklayer.

Roy was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church in Manly and was very active on numerous committees in the church. He also enjoyed making toys for children at the Bethel United Methodist Church through the County Cousins, a Mission organization and also helped install the stain glass windows at the church.

He served on the IOOF home board and was a member of the Royal Blue Rebekah Lodge No. 240 for over 60 years and the Manly Camera Club. He enjoyed hunting, was a member and former treasurer of the Cerro Gordo County Farm Bureau and the Golden Wedding Club in Manly. But his is great love and enjoyment was his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Roberta Cooper and her husband, Merrill, of Mason City, Beatrice Smoley and her husband, Ray, of Buffalo Center, Edward Gallion and his wife, Arlene, of Manly, and Sharon Bosma and her husband, Richard, of Buffalo Center; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Miller and her husband, John, of Spencer, Wis.; 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edna Tietz of Manly, Lucille Hoyt of Northwood, Hazel VanSteenburg and her husband, Barton, of Battle Creek, Minn., and Violet VanSteenburg of Manly; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; his parents; a son, Duwayne Gallion; a son-in-law, Ernest Beenken; a granddaughter, Debra Sue Johnson; and a sister, Mildred Fread.

MABEL THEOLINE THOMPSON

FOREST CITY - Mabel Theoline Helgeson was born in Lake Mills, on October 21, 1907, the daughter of Knute and Ingeborg (Lein) Helgeson. She was baptized at Winnebago Lutheran Church and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran in Forest City. She received her education at Paulson Elementary and the Forest City School system.

She married Maynard T. Thompson at Winnebago Lutheran Church on June 8, 1927. The couple began farming the Ole Lein farm east of Winnebago Lutheran, later continuing farming east of Leland in Mount Valley Township. In 1960 they moved to Crystal Lake where Mabel learned the restaurant business operating the Crystal Lake Café.

She also learned to play cribbage there and went on to win many first-, second- and third-place trophies at cribbage tournaments. The couple moved to Forest City in 1969. Mabel was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City.

Mabel Thompson died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

She is survived by her four children, a daughter, Virginia Kristensen, of San Jose, Calif.; sons, Clair and wife, Lavonne, of Forest City, Stanley and wife, Carolyn, of Forest City, Gary, of, Duncan, and Lynn and his wife, Linda, of Estherville; also a sister, Alma Thompson, of Garner; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Maynard, two brothers, Helmer and Clarence and two sisters, Olga Rauk and Laura Tschirki.

Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Rev. Lee Laaveg officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Forest City.

DONALD D. EBBERS

BRITT - Donald D. Ebbers, 64, of Britt, Iowa, passed away Friday (Dec. 22, 2000) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

Funeral services for Donald Ebbers will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, with Mr. Jason Boomgarden officiating. Burial will take place at a later date.

Visitation was held on Tuesday at the Ewing Funeral Chapel in Britt, and will be held one hour prior to services today at the funeral chapel.

Donald, the son of Lawrence and Martha Ruhnke Ebbers was born Oct. 5, 1936, in Mason City and attended the Mason City Schools. Donald entered the United States Navy in 1956.

Donald was united in marriage with Rayette Sedgwick on April 28, 1958, in Stephentown, New York.

Following his discharge from the Navy, the couple moved to Iowa where he was employed by various companies, including John Deere, the Clear Lake Bakery and Winnebago Industries. He retired from Winnebago on Sept. 18, 1998.

Donald held membership in the Moose Lodge in Mason City, Silver Stars in Britt and attended the Upper Flat Evangelical Free Church.

Donald is survived by his wife, Rayette of Britt; two daughters, Rayetta Rasmussen and her husband, Larry, of Yankton, S. D., and Martha Dirk and her husband, Bruce, of Thompson; two sons, Don Ebbers, Jr. and his wife, Katrese, of Ankeny, Iowa and Wayne Ebbers and his wife, Kari, of Rapid City, S. D.; his mother, Martha Meyer of Mason City; nine grandchildren; one brother, John Ebbers and his wife, Nancy, of Mason City; one sister, Ruth Thompson of Phenix City, Alabama; two half-brothers, Joe Reiff and his wife, Julie, of Lockeford, Calif., and Al Reiff and his wife, Barb, of Ankeny.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother, and one brother-in-law.

HELEN E. BROWN

FOREST CITY - Helen E. Brown was born in Fort Dodge, on March 3, 1907, to Howe and Jennie (Myers) Andrews. She attended schools there, graduating in 1924 with honors. She earned her degree in just three years from the University of Iowa. In 1927, she began teaching in West Union, Iowa.

Three years later she married Donald Doan Brown. After her husband joined the service, she began teaching in Martensdale. In 1943 the family moved to Forest City. Helen devoted nearly 30 years of her life to the Forest City school system, retiring in 1972. She taught various advanced math classes as well as Latin to many Forest City High School students.

After retirement, she continued an interest in her students, keeping scrapbooks of their achievements. She also organized and sponsored the Future Teachers Association, was sponsor of the Pep Club and the Latin Club, and advisor for the yearbook. The 1948 annual was dedicated to her.

She was president of the F.C. Education Association and Winnebago County Education Council for three terms each. She was North Central District secretary for two terms and was president of Iowa Classroom Teachers from 1964-1966.

She was a board member of the Winnebago Historical Society, the Lime Creek Genealogical Society and worked on the Winnebago County Cemetery project. She was the first manager of the Forest City Swimming Pool and was one of the first two inductees to the Forest City Education Hall of Fame in 1981. In July of 1998, she was named "Grand Marshall" of the Puckerbrush parade.

Helen died at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City on Monday (Dec. 25, 2000) at the age of 93 years.

She is survived by her three children, Buster and his wife, Marlene, of Clarion, Barbara Wilde, of Milan, Tenn. and Karen Kerr and her husband, Bill, of Waterloo; also, six grandchildren, Bruce Kluver, Kevin Kluver, Tracy Kluver, Toni Williams, Earl E. (Junior) Brown and D. Diane Brown and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald; and a brother, Kenneth.

MARY DELORES JOHNSON

MASON CITY - Mary Delores Johnson, 80, of 1025 N. Polk Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday Dec. 28, 2000, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams Ave., with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. today, Dec. 27, 2000, with a scripture service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday morning one hour prior to services at the church.

Mary was born on June 12, 1920, the daughter of Antonio and Louise (Buccella) Marroni in Mason City. She graduated in 1938 from Mason City High School. Following high school Mary was united in marriage to her first husband Carroll 'Bob' Gerges. Bob later died in 1951. Ten years later on April 10, 1961, Mary was united in marriage to Ralph 'Red' Johnson in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Her working career included Klipto Printing, Mason City Tent and Awning, Decker's, and being the bookkeeper for her husbands painting business.

Mary was a music enthusiast whether while listening to Big Bands or playing the organ. Her music interests didn't stop there - she could also be found kicking up her heels and dancing to the beat at the Surf Ballroom.

Her athletic abilities were prevalent even back when she was in school. During her school days at Roosevelt Junior High, her competitive spirit earned her letters in track and softball. Later in life she could be found enjoying a round of golf, working in her flower garden, baking goodies, or just spending time with her grandchildren. Mary enjoyed watching baseball on TV, especially the World Series. In recent years her favorite past time was playing Yahtzee. She played up until the time she went to the hospice unit.

Mary was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Mary's life include her husband, Ralph ''Red'' of Mason City; one daughter, Jean Edwards, of Mason City; four sisters, Marie Kallas, Lucille Bilyeu, and Angeline Melby all of Mason City, and Lorraine McOllough and her husband Dean of Clarion; one brother, Gabriel Marroni and his wife, Patricia, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Michael Edwards of Minneapolis, Minn. and Jennifer Edwards, of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was a very loving and caring person and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Martha was born Sept. 3, 1920, in Tipton, the daughter of Wilbur "Bert" and Daisey Elizabeth (Thede) Morden. She graduated from Tipton High School and from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. Martha began working as a dental hygienist for Nettleton's Dental Practice in 1940.

She was united in marriage to Gordon Bieth on Oct. 11, 1948, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. Martha retired after 35 years as a dental hygienist but went on to work for a few years at Community Action in Mason City.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the church guild, and was a founding member of the Newman High School Booster Club.

She enjoyed reading, especially poetry, knitting and crossword puzzles.

Martha is survived by her husband, Gordon, of Mason City; two sons, Tom Bieth and his wife, Kathy, of Montrose, Colo., and Ted Bieth and his wife, Joyce, of Plymouth; four grandchildren, Lee and Casey Bieth of Montrose, Colo., and Annie and Molly Bieth of Plymouth; one brother, Bud Morden of Tipton; four sisters, Pauline Rupe, of Tipton, Arlene Kinney, of Cedar Rapids, Florence Lightfoot of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Helen Matthews, of Barrington, Ill., and many nieces and nephews.

AUSTIN, Texas - Robert Howard Jacks, 88, of Austin, Texas, formerly of Mason City, passed away Dec. 17, 2000, at his home in Texas.

Memorial services were held Dec. 21, 2000, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, with full military rites.

Robert was one of triplets born Dec. 10, 1912, at Breckenridge, Minn. to Homer and Mable (Tuttle) Howard. Due to his parents' death before he was three months old, he was adopted by Frank and Mary (Scott) Jacks.

Robert served in the Cavalry in the 1930s, in the U.S. Navy in World War II and in the Army in the Korean War.

He was a charter member of the D.A.V. of Harlingen, Texas, and a life member of the V.F.W.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothea Jacks, of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Margaret and her husband, Dick Coe, of Mason City, and Judy Trosvig and her friend, Mike, of The Woodlands, Texas; and one son, Larry and his wife, Jeanette, of Eton, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both sets of parents, one grandson, three sisters, two brothers, and Margaret and Larry's mother.

Edwin L. Abbas was born July 25, 1925, in Osceola Township Franklin County, Iowa, a son of George and Ida (Lauterbach) Abbas. He was raised in Franklin County and a graduate of Geneva High School.

He was a corporal stationed in Trieste, Italy, and served as a general's driver.

Edwin was united in marriage to Dorothy Anne Pandil on Sept. 25, 1955, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton.

He worked for North Central Farm Service for 42 years; 23 years as a tank wagon driver and 19 years as operation's manager until his retirement in December of 1996.

He was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. He also enjoyed traveling and golfing with his wife, Dorothy.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Anne Abbas, of Hampton; daughter, Sherry and husband, Wesley Swieter, of Ackley; daughter, Shelly and husband, Les Craighton, of Hampton; son, Brad and his wife, Sherri Abbas, of Sacramento, Calif.; grandsons, Nolan and Clay Craighton, James Abbas; grandaughter, Lyra Abbas; sister, Arlene and her husband, Donald Horner, of Hampton; sister, Gertrude and her husband, Lee Himan, of Ames; sister, Lena Salven, of Marion; sister, Norma and her husband, Roger Palmer, of Hampton; brother, George Abbas and his wife, Donna, of Hampton; and brother, Bob Abbas and his wife, Ilene, of Hampton.

Vincent R. Deviney was born March 1, 1908, in Waukon, the son of James J. and Margaret (O'Brien) Deviney. His family moved to Mason City in 1921 and he graduated from St. Joseph's High School. On Aug. 13, 1938, Vince was united in marriage to Helen A. Prall in New Ulm, Minn.

Vince and Helen lived at 808 N. Carolina for 58 years. He worked for Standard Oil for 44 years, retiring as an auditor in 1969.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and St. Vincent's DePaul. He was active with the Senior Citizen's Center and delivered for Meals on Wheels.

Vince was an avid gardener, and also enjoyed traveling, golfing, woodworking and, especially, playing cribbage.

Left to survive him are his two daughters and their families, Dixie Sullivan and her husband, Jerry, of Fond du Lac, Wis., and Diana Krieger and her husband, Denny, of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Esther Prall Boatwright, of Osprey, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

NORA SPRINGS - Ben G. Vierkant, 84, of 26 Gaylord, Nora Springs, died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs.

Ben was born May 17, 1916, in Goodell, Iowa, the son of George and Katie (VanOsten) Vierkant. He moved to a farm southwest of Nora Springs, Iowa, in 1932. Ben served in the Army during World War II in the 41st Infantry Division.

Following the service, he moved back to rural Nora Springs where he farmed and married G. Carma Neil on Aug. 11, 1953, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They moved to Nora Springs where he worked at the Fullerton Lumberyard in Nora Springs and at Armour's where he worked for 30 years.

Ben was a loving and caring Dad and always had a special gift for his children.

Ben was a member of the United Methodist Church in Nora Springs, the 41st Infantry Division Association and the American Legion Post 449 in Nora Springs.

Ben is survived by his wife, G. Carma Vierkant, of Nora Springs; three daughters, Diane Pigg and her husband, David, of Jacksonville, Ill., Debra Vierkant, of Eugene, Ore. and Denise Gilbert and her husband, Roger, of Eugene, Ore.; three grandchildren, Dr. Jason Pigg and his wife, Aimee, of Ruston, La., Jeff Pigg and his wife, Kristi, of Bondurant, Iowa, and Megan Gilbert, of Eugene, Ore., and one brother, Henry G. Vierkant, of Mason City; and his two nephews, Roger and Gary Vaughn.

MASON CITY - Lois Emmert, 88, of 5100 Fourth St. S.E., died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Lois Emmert was born June 1, 1912, in Whittemore, Iowa, the daughter of Jay and Clara (Matson) Graham. She was a graduate of Burt High School. She furthered her education at Iowa State Teacher's College and Iowa State University.

She was united in marriage to John in Burt, Iowa, on Jan. 1, 1939. After their marriage they bought a farm in Mason City where they made their home for many years.

Lois was a gifted teacher at good old Portland No. 2. After her days as a classroom teacher, she continued to inspire children as a 4-H special projects leader. Lois taught hundreds of people how to knit and do other crafts. She designed her own patterns and her projects were made with thoughtfulness and love.

Lois was a 60-year member of her neighborhood Social Hour Club and also served as secretary/treasurer for the Portland No. 2 School Board. She was a skilled gardener and an avid reader.

Lois had a zest for life; she explored new things throughout her 88 years. She was a life-long learner who enjoyed the simple things in life, beautiful music, family, games, kites, laughter and hugs.

She is survived by her husband, John Emmert, of Mason City; two daughters, Donita McCoy and her husband, Dick, of Ames, and Deanna Dow and her husband, Dave, of Loveland, Colo.; one son, Doyce Emmert and his wife, Trisha, of Walhalla, S.C.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Kenneth Graham of Mason City, Glenn Graham and his wife, Vera, of Algona, Leslie Graham and his wife, Donna, of Marshalltown and Melvin Graham and his wife, Rosella, of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Maxine Mitchell and her husband, Ray, of Greeley, Colo., Joyce Bey and her husband, Paul, of Temple Hills, Md., and Helen Olsen and her husband, Christy, of Rochester, Minn.; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Merwyn Graham and Joseph T. Graham.

KEITH E. BRUE

SLINGER, Wis. - Keith E. Brue of Slinger, Wis., died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at Hartford Memorial Hospital in Hartford, Wis., at the age of 63 years.

He was born on July 26, 1937, in Lake Mills, Iowa, to Ernest and Beulah ( McClain) Brue and he married Madonna Fure on Dec. 26, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiester, Minn.

Keith served in the U.S. Air Force and earned a finance degree at Luther College in Decorah. He then earned his master's degree in finance from the University of Chicago. After college he worked at Ernst & Young in Minneapolis, Minn.

He then worked at Scorpion Inc. in Crosby, Minn., and was next employed as vice president and C.F.O. at Nicolet Instrument, Inc., in Madison, Wis. He later worked at Promega in Fitchburg, Wis., and then Republic Telecom in Boulder, Colo. For the past several years he had been employed at C.F.O. at General Generoco in Slinger, Wis.

He served on the Verona School Board and also as a past Verona village president. He loved flying and was president of the West Bend E.A.A. Chapter No. 1158.

Keith also loved to spend time with his family and is survived by his wife, Madonna; five children, Michael Brue of Hartford, Michelle (Mark) Diekrager of Dexter, Minn., Jeffery Brue of Boulder, Colo., K. Jason Brue of San Francisco, Calif., and Jennifer Brue of Plymouth, Minn.; four grandchildren, Liz Reuter, Kristopher Brue, Michaela Diekrager and Chase Diekrager; his parents, Ernest and Beulah Brue of Lake Mills; a brother, Gary (Laurie) Brue, of Joice; a niece, Carlie Brue; a nephew, Peter Brue; his mother-in-law, Marceline Fure of Albert Lea, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Diane (John) Bazey, of Rochester, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, DeLyle (Carolyn) Fure of Decorah and Bruce (Lois) Fure of Rochester, Minn.; and many other relatives and friends from around the world.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Luke Lutheran Church, Highway 144 and Arthur Road in Slinger, Wis., with the Rev. Alan Lindberg officiating. The family will greet visitors from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the church.

MASON CITY - Mary Delores Johnson, 80, of 1025 N. Polk Ave., died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Mary was born on June 12, 1920, the daughter of Antonio and Louise (Buccella) Marroni, in Mason City. She graduated in 1938 from Mason City High School. Following high school, Mary was united in marriage to her first husband, Carroll 'Bob' Gerdes. Bob died in 1951. Ten years later, on April 10, 1961, Mary was united in marriage to Ralph 'Red' Johnson in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Her working career included Klipto Printing, Mason City Tent and Awning and Deckers, and being the bookkeeper for her husband's painting business.

Mary was a music enthusiast whether while listening to Big Band or playing the organ. Her music interests didn't stop there. She could also be found dancing at the Surf ballroom.

Her athletic abilities were prevalent even back when she was in school. During her school days at Lincoln Junior High her competitive spirit earned her letters in track and softball. Later in life she could be found enjoying a round of golf, working in her flower garden, baking goodies or just spending time with her grandchildren. Mary enjoyed watching baseball on TV, especially the World Series. In recent years her favorite pastime was playing Yahtzee. She played up until the time she went to the hospice unit.

Mary was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Mary's life include her husband, Ralph 'Red' Johnson, of Mason City; one daughter, Jean Edwards, of Mason City; four sisters, Marie Kallas, Lucille Bilyeu and Angeline Melby, all of Mason City, and Lorraine McOllough and her husband, Dean, of Clarion; one brother, Gabriel Marroni and his wife, Patricia, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Michael Edwards of Minneapolis, Minn., and Jennifer Edwards of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews. Mary was a very loving and caring person and will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Ralph was born Dec. 25, 1936, in Wells, Minn., the son of Alvin and Goldie (Buendorf) Johnson. He grew up in Wells and graduated from Wells High School. Following high school, he served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps.

On Sept. 15, 1957, Ralph was united in marriage to Irene Novak in Wells, Minn.

Ralph was an avid reader who enjoyed spending time at the library. He was also always ready to take a trip over to the Mississippi River to do some sight-seeing.

LOUIS P. DIAZ

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Louis P. Diaz, 79, of St. Louis, formerly of Mason City, died Dec. 15 (2000). Mr. Diaz was a retired teacher and coach from Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Mo. He was the first baseball coach for Newman High in Mason City and also had coached at St. Joe before moving.

Lou was born on June 29, 1930, to Luis and Elisa Diaz in Mason City. He attended Holy Family School and Loras College. He was united in the sacrament of marriage at Holy Family Church to Rosemary Fullerton of Rockford, Iowa. They lived in Mason City before moving to Minnesota and finally settling down in Kirkwood, a township near St. Louis.

Lou was well known for his own baseball and coaching skills as well as his people skills. He was both a friend and mentor to all high school kids who were fortunate enough to have him help mold their lives.

After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working on his lakeside home and traveling with Rosemary to visit friends and relatives.

Lou is at peace in Heaven now (or is it Iowa?) playing 2nd base.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rosemary Diaz; his daughters, Pam (Greg) Petersen, Connie (Tom) Neary and Cathy (Mark) Lien; and his son, Dan (Tammy) Diaz; his sister, Alice Lee of Mason City; and his dear grandchildren, Matthew, Adam, Sarah, Katie, Tyler, Travis, and Joshua.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Elisa Diaz; and his brothers, Al and Joe Diaz.

The funeral was held in Kirkwood and interment was at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

MASON CITY - Gladys Lenze, 92, of 302 Second St. N.E., died Sunday (Dec. 24, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Belle Plaine, Iowa, with full military rites performed by the American Legion of Belle Plaine.

Gladys L. Lenze was born Sept. 3, 1909, in Lovilia, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Henry) Lenze. She was a 1927 graduate of Mason City High School.

She completed her nurses training at Michael Reese in Chicago, Ill., In 1930. She furthered her education at Grace Hospital in Detroit, Mich., graduating in 1939 as a nurse anesthetist.

She enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942, serving in World War II and the Korean War. She retired as a major in 1958. Following her retirement from the Army, she worked as a nurse anesthetist at the Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich. She moved to Mason City in 1990 to be closer to her family.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and the Retired Army Nurses Corps Association.

She enjoyed spending her time traveling, reading, working puzzles, crocheting, doing latch-hook rugs, playing bridge and gardening.

Those left to cherish her memory include a sister-in-law, Alice Lenze of Mason City; four nephews, Carl Sand Jr. of Fox Lake, Ill., Dick Sand of Chicago, Ill., Chuck Lenze of Norwalk, Iowa, and Tom Lenze of Prole, Iowa; four grandnephews; and three grandnieces.

DOLLIVER - Clarence A. Rezac, of Dolliver, died Tuesday (Dec. 26, 2000) at the McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D., at the age of 62 years, 9 months and 12 days.

Clarence Allen Rezac, the son of Clarence Alvin and Marie (Lyle) Rezac, was born March 14, 1938, in rural Maple Hill.

Clarence received his education in the Armstrong schools and graduated from Armstrong High School in 1958. He attended one semester at Estherville Junior College.

Clarence was united in marriage to Mary Rose Danielson on March 9, 1968, at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints Church in Spirit Lake. Clarence farmed all his life in the Dolliver area.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, collecting toy tractors, watching sports, driving through car lots and, most importantly, his children and grandchildren.

Clarence was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints and a member of the Lincoln Township board of trustees for many years.

Clarence was preceded in death by his mother, Marie; two infant children, Tim and Lori; his grandparents; half-sister, Linda Hummel; and half-brother, LeRoy Clabaugh.

Gerald was born Nov. 19, 1913, in Webster City, the son of Earl M. and Mary M. (Cormaney) Boozell. He attended school in Blairsburg.

Gerald married Thelma S. Warwick on April 29, 1935, in Galena, Ill. The Boozells moved to Mason City in 1941, where Gerald worked as a mechanic for Pritchard and Schukei Ford for 34 years, retiring in 1975.

Gerald was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma S. Boozell, of Belvidere, Ill.; son, Eldon D. Boozell and his wife, Barbara, of Belvidere, Ill.; four grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

EDNA ALICE PEIL

ALEXANDER - Edna A. (Wiebke) Peil, 75, of Alexander, died Dec. 22, 2000, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

The funeral was held on Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000) at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, with the Rev. Robert Ford officiating. Burial was in Alexander Cemetery in Alexander.

Edna was born May 31, 1925, in Butler County, the daughter of Charles and Bovine (Franken) Wiebke.

Edna married Willard K. Peil on Oct. 15, 1946, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Vilmar. They lived on a farm three miles east of Alexander until December of 1969. They moved to Alexander, where she resided until her death.

Edna was a housewife and mother, working as custodian and cook for the elementary school in Alexander, then in an egg processing plant in Alexander, at Dows Care Center for five years as a nurses aid, and the last 24 years at the Belmond Health Care Center.

She was an active member of the First Reformed Church of Alexander, where she was involved in RCW. She was previously a 4-H leader and helped supervise the 4-H food stand during the Franklin County Fair. She took great pride in her African violets and other plants that adorned her home.

She took great pride in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Polliann Carlson, of Bussey; son, Charles and his wife, Jean, of Belmond; son, Loran, of Alexander; daughter, Barbara and her husband, Britton, of Ackley; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Koester, of Allison, and Edith Kolthoff, of New Hampton; and one brother, Clifford Wiebke, of Nashua.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard K.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara Peil; one son-in-law, John Carlson; one sister, Wilma Lumley; one brother, Willard Wiebke; and one brother and one sister in infancy.

FANNIE VENETTA MAE DUREGGER

CLEAR LAKE - Fannie Venetta Mae Duregger, 89, 1708 Main Ave., died Wednesday night (Dec. 27, 2000) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church of Ventura. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Fannie Vennetta Mae was born in Mason City, on Aug. 24, 1911, the daughter of James Orie and Emma Etta (Bonner) Rish. The family moved to North Dakota and lived there until about 1921. Fannie, her parents and brothers then settled in Menahaga, Minn. Her mother and younger brother moved to Clear Lake, but Fannie remained in Menahega to work for a family so that she could finish her last year of high school. Fannie graduated from Menahaga High School on May 29, 1929, then moved to Clear Lake. She worked with her mother at the Outing Club.

She met Albert E. Duregger and they married on Nov. 30, 1933. To this union six children were born. Fannie and Al lived in Clear Lake and raised their family. They also raised two granddaughters, Denise and Kristen.

Fannie enjoyed crocheting, talking on the phone, attending church, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had a special fondness for cats and dogs. She lost her beloved pet dog, Tasha, in February to cancer. It was her wish that she and Tasha enter the Kingdom of Heaven together, so Tasha's remains will be buried with her.

Left to cherish her memory is one son, Dennis Duregger, of Clear Lake; three daughters, Karen Nichols and her husband, John, of Clear Lake, Vickie Dietrich, of Mason City, and Jolene Boyd and her husband, William, of Mason City; one brother, Kenneth Rish, of Arco, Idaho; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Fannie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Albert (Aug. 13, 1995), two brothers, Laurence Rish and Harlan Rish; one sister, Fern Rish; two daughters, Venetta Mae Duregger and Carol Jean Duregger; and one grandson, Jeffrey Duregger.

CLEAR LAKE - Angeline O. Fuller, 83, 1105 Second Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Wednesday morning (Dec. 27, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church, 205 W. 10th Ave. N. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Peter Narum officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Angeline was born Dec. 28, 1916, in Clear Lake, the daughter of John and Martha (DeVries) Trimble. She received her education in Clear Lake and married Edwin L. Fuller on April 26, 1936, in McGregor.

She was a life-long member of the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake and was active in ladies church organizations.

Angeline and her husband enjoyed working for the Four Seasons Lodge in Bena, Minn., for 10 years.

Angeline loved knitting, gardening and fishing. Reading was very important to Angeline. Angeline and her husband also loved to go camping.

Angeline is survived by her son, Larry Fuller, of Clear Lake; a brother, Morris Trimble, of Clear Lake; three grandsons, Matt Fuller, of Los Angeles, Brett Fuller, of Overland Park, Kan., and Joseph Fuller, of Harrisonville, Mo.; two grandaughters, Jennifer Sillman, of Ames, and Cindy Nissen, of Machesney Park, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

HAROLD 'RED' OSTRANDER

CLEAR LAKE - Harold "Red" Ostrander, 83, of 16 S. Shore Dr., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000) at his residence.

The funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Greg Boyle officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Harris was born Feb. 21, 1917, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Ora A. and Nellie (Vandoveer) Ostrander. Harris moved to Clear Lake at an early age and graduated from Clear Lake High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart. After his discharge he returned to Clear Lake and worked as a bartender at the Ritz Club in Clear Lake for many years. "Red" met his wife, Liz Mayer, who also worked for the Ritz, and they were married Feb. 18, 1946.

"Red" is survived by two sons, Jim Ostrander and his wife, Kristin, of Waterloo and Tim Ostrander and his wife, Olivia, Clear Lake; three daughters, Sharon Sallee and her husband Bob, of Indianola, Mary Pals and her husband, Jeff, of Hawarden and Cindy Christensen and her husband, Doug, Cedar Falls; one brother, Ora "Pinky" Ostrander, of Mesa, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

"Red" was preceded in death by his parents; his spouse, Liz; one grandson, Tanner Pals; and two brothers, David and Bruce Ostrander.

ARDEN EVERETT LILJEDAHL

NORTHWOOD - Arden Everett Liljedahl, 67, of Northwood, died Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City after a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood, with the Rev. Lynn Frank officiating. Inurnment will follow the service at Shellrock Cemetery, rural Northwood.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the First Lutheran Church in Northwood.

Arden Everett Liljedahl was born in Northwood on July 20, 1933, the son of John and Olga Liljedahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.

On Jan. 5, 1952, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Russell. To this union five children were born. They were later divorced. He later married Doris Norris and to this union one child was born. They also divorced.

Arden worked as a carpenter his entire life in the north Iowa area and took great pride in his carpentry skills.

He is survived by two sons, Dr. Ronald Liljedahl and his wife, Lorrie, of Hendersonville, N.C., and Rick Perschbacher and his special friend, Carrie Bryziinski, of Mankato, Minn.; four daughters, Nancy Hickman and her husband, Marv, of Forest City, Sandra Madden, of Northwood, Sharyl Anderson and her husband, Steven, of Thompson, and Sue Odden, of Forest City; his mother, Olga Liljedahl, of Northwood; two brothers, Marlin and Orin Liljedahl, of Northwood; two sisters, Ila Hebel, of Manly and Eileen Snyder, of Forrest City, Ark.; numerous grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM 'BILL' D. LEY

LAKOTA - William "Bill" D. Ley, 84, of Lakota, died Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000) at the United Hospital in Blue Earth, Minn.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakota, with Pastors Bill Peake and Victor Vriesen officiating. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Lakota.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Winter Funeral Home, 44 First St. N.W. in Buffalo Center.

William "Bill" Dean Ley was born to Willie Everett Ley and Lucile Florence Ley (nee Wheeler) in their family home in Germania, on Aug. 21, 1915, and lived his entire life in that community (which changed its name to Lakota in 1917). In 1918, his sister, Elizabeth Eleanor (Buckels) was born, and in 1922, his brother, James Jay. Mr. Ley attended the Lakota Public School, graduating with a class of four students in 1934. He then majored in business at the University of Iowa, where he was active in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

In 1940, Mr. Ley married Clara Ruth Odland, an elementary school teacher from South Dakota. David William was born to the couple in 1942, Carolyn Lucile in 1946, and Timothy James in 1953. Helen Mammenga joined the family in 1953 at the age of 15.

Mr. Ley joined his father at Ley Motor Co. in Lakota in 1937, and remained his partner in that business until 1967. He and his father also were partners in Ley and Ley, a company with several farm holdings in North Iowa. In January 1967, Bill joined Farmers Trust and Savings Bank in Buffalo Center, where he served as president until 1981; from that time until his death, he served as chairman of the board of directors. Under his leadership, the bank's assets grew from $6 million to $100 million, and it added branches in Britt and Lake Mills.

In 1988, Mr. Ley married Joy Jensvold (nee Orthel) of Buffalo Center, after a long and rich friendship. Together, they enjoyed many hobbies and activities, including the restoration of the W.E. Ley home in Lakota, gardening, and active social and recreational life at their home on West Okoboji Lake.

Mr. Ley was active in many community and civic activities. He served as president of the Lakota School Board, vice president of the Iowa Ford Dealers, district delegate of the Iowa Automobile Dealers Association, chairman of the trustees of the Lakota First Presbyterian Church, and served on the board of trustees of Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, the executive board of the Kossuth County Fair, and the founding board of the Gruis Recreational Area in Buffalo Center. In 1988, he established the William D. Ley Scholarship Fund at the North Iowa Coummity School in Buffalo Center.

Mr. Ley enjoyed a number of hobbies and outside interests. He played varsity baseball and basketball in high school, and was a lifelong Cubs fan. He was an avid horseman, and owned and showed several top saddlebreds throughout the Midwest, winning a large number of state and regional championships. He was president of the Iowa Saddle Horse Association in 1963 -64, and was later elected to the Iowa State Horseman's Hall of Fame. Later in life, he enjoyed competitive golf, and he collected antique cars.

Mr. Ley was preceded in death by his parents, and by his brother, who was killed in action in World War II.

He is survived by his wife, Joy, of Lakota; by his son, David and wife, Sandy of Lakota; his daughter, Carolyn Berkland and husband, Gary, of Lincoln, Neb.; his son, Tim and wife, Patricia Hohn, of Owensville, Mo.; and Helen Bierstedt and husband, Jerry, of Platteville, Wis. He is also survived by four stepchildren, Sue Bosma and husband, Steve, Tony Jensvold and wife, Fran, Mary Giesking and husband, Rande, and by Todd Jensvold. Mr Ley is survived by 18 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

JENNETTE H. ROGENESS

BRITT - Jennette H. Rogeness, 100, of Britt, passed away Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake, with the Rev. Gary Marzolf officiating. Interment will be at Crystal Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt and will continue one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Jennette H. Rogeness, the daughter of Swen and Rachel (Orvick) Rogeness, was born July 13, 1900, on the home farm near Crystal Lake. She attended rural school and Morningside College in Sioux City, where she majored in music and piano. She gave private lessons in piano to many students in the local area.

Later she moved to Wheaton, Ill., and worked at Wheaton College as head cook for 20 years. She returned home in 1953 to care for her elderly parents.

She enjoyed working with flowers and gardening. Jennette loved to share the fruits of her labor with her friends and relatives. She was a kind-hearted person who was ready to help out anyone in need.

She was organist at the Crystal Lake Methodist Church for 18 years and was an active member of the church and the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was also a member of the Neighborhood Club, Birthday Club and Happy Homemakers Club.

Jennette is survived by a sister, Lila Rogeness, of Britt; a brother, Sanford Rogeness, of Britt; a sister-in-law, Gladys Rogeness, of Britt; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Arthur, Grant and Roy Rogeness; and two sisters, Alice Grinde and Valida Valentine.

LOUIS P. DIAZ

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Louis P. Diaz, 70, of St. Louis, formerly of Mason City, died Dec. 15, 2000. Mr. Diaz was a retired teacher and coach from Kirkwood High School in Kirkwood, Mo. He was the first baseball coach for Newman High in Mason City, and also had coached at St. Joe before moving.

Lou was born on June 29, 1930, to Luis and Elisa Diaz in Mason City. He attended Holy Family School and Loras College. He was united in the sacrament of marriage at Holy Family Church to Rosemary Fullerton of Rockford. They lived in Mason City before moving to Minnesota and finally settling down in Kirkwood, a township near St. Louis.

Lou was well known for his own baseball and coaching skills as well as his people skills. He was both a friend and mentor to all high school kids who were fortunate enough to have him help mold their lives.

After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, working on his lakeside home and traveling with Rosemary to visit friends and relatives.

Lou is at peace in Heaven now (or is it Iowa?) playing 2nd base.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rosemary Diaz; his daughters, Pam (Greg) Petersen, Connie (Tom) Neary and Cathy (Mark) Lien; and his son, Dan (Tammy) Diaz; his sister, Alice Lee of Mason City; and his dear grandchildren, Matthew, Adam, Sarah, Katie, Tyler, Travis, and Joshua.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Elisa Diaz; and his brothers, Al and Joe Diaz.

The funeral was held in Kirkwood and interment was at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

BEVERLY J. SHEEHY

Beverly Jean Sheehy, 16120 245th St., Mason City, was born on March 15, 1927, to Lee and Ina (Daniels) Roberts in Mason City, and died in the Grand Cayman Islands Friday, Dec. 22. She attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School. She married Edward C. Sheehy on April 22, 1950, and to this union one son, Lee Edward, was born. She was a devoted wife and mother.

Bev worked at Standard Oil in Mason City and moved to the Des Moines office in 1950, working 21 years. In 1959 the family moved to Minneapolis. They moved to Mason City in 1969. She was employed by Unisys and retired in 1989.

Bev loved to work as is shown in her work history. After retirement, she enjoyed working bingo at the Elks. In recent years, she volunteered on a regular basis at the Girl Scout Council of North Iowa, answering phones, handling mailings, etc. She loved meeting people and making new friends.

Her greatest joy in life was her family and, most importantly, her son, who brought her happiness, pride and strength.

One of her main interests was traveling and during this past year visited Branson, Mo., La Jolla, Calif., France and, most recently, the Grand Cayman Islands. She had a cruise and a trip to Ireland scheduled for 2001. When she wasn't traveling, she enjoyed playing cards weekly with friends.

Bev was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. She became critically ill on her most recent trip and succumbed to the after-effects of her last treatment.

Bev was a member of the Elks, Women of the Moose, and the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include her son, Lee Edward, Minneapolis, and his special friend, Jennifer; two beloved nieces, Jane Papouchis and daughter, Nikki and Sandy (John) Funk and children, Lisa (Hansen) and Rob; nephew Bert L. Roberts Jr. and son, Travis; and her husband's loving family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter-in-law, Linda Jadwin; brother, Bert L. Roberts Sr. and his wife, Judy; and a sister in infancy.

According to her wishes, her body has been cremated. Visitation for friends and family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Private inurnment services will take place at a later date.

CHAPIN - Marie I. Hanson, 64, died Wednesday (Dec. 27, 2000) at her home in Chapin.

Marie Irene Hansen was born on Feb. 17, 1936, in Fort Peck, Mont., to Willard and Alvhild Garsjo Heuer. She moved with her family to Iowa and attended rural schools near Dows. She later moved with her family to Hampton where she graduated from high school.

Marie then attended beauty school in Des Moines and was a beautician for many years, owning her own shop in Sheffield and working at the Sheffield Care Center. She also worked at the Sheffield Pharmacy for 18 years.

Marie was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sheffield and enjoyed reading.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald, of Chapin; three sons, Ronald and his wife, Janis, of Sheffield, Steven and his wife, Becky, of Casper, Wyo., and Lamont Willard Hansen and his special friend, Marlys, of Mason City; four grandchildren; and her mother, Alvhild Heuer, of Hampton.

CLEAR LAKE - Marie Gardow, 76, of Lakeside Acres, passed away Wednesday (December 27, 2000) at the Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City , following surgical complications and a brief illness.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Ward-Van Slyke. Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

The body has been cremated. The inurnment will be held at Memorial Park Columbarium.

It is suggested that remembrances be made to the Clear Lake Senior Center in Marie's name.

Marie was born in Maynard to Herman and Helen (Croft) Gardow on February 27, 1924. She graduated from the Maynard Public Schools in 1942 and went on to work at Solar Aircraft in Des Moines during World War II.

Following the war she accepted employment in Chicago, Ill., where she eventually became a shift superintendent at a large manufacturing plant producing a variety of electrical products. In this capacity she hired, trained and supervised hundreds of plant workers during her near 30-year association with the company. She received numerous commendations for her dedication and was always considered a tough, but fair, no-nonsense manager. She retired in 1981 and moved back to Iowa, locating in Clear Lake to be near family members.

An ardent sports fan, she was an enthusiastic Chicago Bulls supporter and kept abreast of many athletic events such as college basketball, football and professional boxing. She loved fishing and often could be found sitting on a dock in Clear Lake, with a line (and toe) in the water waiting for that "big one" to strike. She was an active member of the Clear Lake Senior Citizens Center where she participated in a number of Center activities.

Marie leaves her mother, four sisters, two brothers and a host of friends to celebrate her life and mourn her departure. They are Helen Gardow, mother, of Clear Lake; Esther Walling, sister, of Waterloo; Sharlean Ropes, sister, and her husband, John, of Mason City; Helen Skubinna, sister, and her husband, Leon, of Cedar Falls; Bonnie Kiel, sister, of Ventura; Herman Gadow Jr., brother, and his wife, Dee, of Oelwein; and Milo Gadow, brother, and wife, Harriet, of Cedar Falls; and five nephews and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her father Herman and one brother, John.

For many, many years you could find Red at the golf course or playing cards with his friends.

Red had many friends and family members he kept close to his heart.

"Red" is survived by two sons, Jim Ostrander and his wife, Kristin, of Waterloo and Tim Ostrander and his wife, Olivia, Clear Lake; three daughters, Sharon Sallee and her husband Bob, of Indianola, Mary Pals and her husband, Jeff, of Hawarden and Cindy Christensen and her husband, Doug, Cedar Falls; one brother, Ora "Pinky" Ostrander, of Mesa, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister-in-law, Alma Ostrander, Clear Lake.

DALE CARL ALBERT WILKEN

CHARLES CITY - Funeral services for Dale Carl Albert Wilken, 69, of 2105 Clark St., Charles City, formerly of Greene, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pleasant Valley United Church of Christ, rural Clarksville. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Greene.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene with a public scripture service beginning at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church Monday.

Dale Carl Albert Wilken was born northeast of Clarksville in Butler County, a son of Arnold H. and Bertha Wilken, and died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2000) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City of heart complications.

He was baptized and confirmed as a member of the First United Church of Christ of Pleasant Valley. Dale was proud of his perfect Sunday school attendance at Pleasant Valley. He attended the Pleasant Valley country school graduating third in his eighth grade class of three members. At the age of 16, he started driving truck for various businesses.

He was united in marriage to Carol Jean Kingery in Dec. 10, 1950, at First Presbyterian Church in Greene. To this union five children were born.

He was employed at Schield Bantum in Waverly for two-and-one-half years and farmed in the Clarksville area from 1953 to 1964. After moving to Greene, he drove for Sperry Transportation in Charles City for 10 years. He later drove for Midwest Emory of Chicago until an injury in 1983 caused him to retire from driving semi.

Dale and Jean later divorced but continued a family relationship until his death.

He enjoyed playing cards, listening and dancing to country and old-time music, and spending time with his family. Dale enjoyed sharing his over-the-road experiences, jokes and stories with anyone who would listen.

Dale is survived by his former wife, Jean Wilken, of Greene; three daughters, Linda Meek and her friend, Rob Lenz, of Osage, Lana and Dan Miller of Charles City, and LeAnn and Tom Merfeld of Rudd; one son, Leland and Lisa Wilken of Adel; 11 grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; his parents, Arnold and Bertha Wilken, of Clarksville; two brothers, Donald and Gert Wilken of Clarksville and Darrel and Doris Wilken of Cedar Falls; one sister, Shirley and Marlin Klar of Grundy Center; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynette Wilken Wall, and a grandson, Larry Wall, in October 1978.

Colleen, the daughter of Leo and Helen Kelley Dorr, was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Oxford Mills, Iowa. She grew up in the Oxford Mills area and moved to Belmond when she was 14.

On Nov. 9, 1946, Colleen was united in marriage to Douglas Walrod in Garner. The couple made their home in Belmond their entire married life.

Colleen always enjoyed her home and her family. Her hobbies included cross-stitching and quilting. Many of these projects her family will treasure.

Colleen is survived by her husband, Douglas, of Belmond; two daughters, Toni Armour of Belmond and Judy Havens and her husband, Donald, of Belmond; two sons, Steven and his wife, Linda, and Bill and his wife, Missy, all of Belmond; nine grandchildren, Matt and his wife, Sue, Jesse, Rita and her husband, Geoff, Sarah, Michael, Jason, Emily, Travis and Taylor; one great-granddaughter, Emma; a sister, Donna Robertson and her husband, Dave, of Belmond; two brothers, Leo Dorr Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Iowa Falls, and David Dorr and his wife, Wanda, of Belmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Eugene; and a son-in-law, Terry.

Carrie (Albers) Pringnitz, the daughter of George and Ewawina (Wientjes) Albers, was born Feb. 4, 1907, on the family farm in rural Klemme. She was baptized and confirmed at the Immanuel Reformed Church in Klemme.

She was one of 10 children and attended rural school through the eighth grade and began working on the farm and helped with raising her siblings.

Carrie was united in marriage to Frederick A. Pringnitz on March 27, 1941, and they moved to a farm west of Klemme.

She was a very hard worker and helped her husband with the farming and tended to the many chores on the farm. She was a wonderful cook, especially her home-made bread. Coffee time was an important part of her life, and if you came to visit, you always had to have coffee and cookies. Carrie was also very kind hearted and a true neighbor.

After Fred died in 1967, Carrie moved to Klemme and entered the Belmond Health Care Center in 1995, where she died on Friday, Dec. 29.

She is survived by her twin sister, Winnie Buss, of Klemme; a brother, Lubbe Albers, of Clear Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Fred; four brothers; and three sisters.

VALDIK LEESALU

ROCKFORD - Valdik Leesalu, 79, of 510 E. Main St., died Wednesday (December 27, 2000) at his home.

Valdik was born May 30, 1921, in Orava township, Voru, Estonia. He was raised on a farm with his brothers and sister. Valdik completed elementary, high school and technical school.

The trade he was taught could not be put to use because communist Russia invaded Estonia during World War II. He fled Estonia to escape communist domination. This journey by foot, horse and train took a year. He finally reached the safety of a displaced persons camp in Augsburg, Germany. He lived in the camp for five years.

In 1949, an opportunity came through Lutheran Church sponsorship to immigrate to the United States. He arrived in Rockford on June 10, 1949. He became a citizen of the United States in 1955.

On July 18, 1970, Valdik was united in marriage to Virginia Grace Hepp in Rockford where they made their home.

Valdik was known for and admired by many for his beautiful flower garden. There were many people who would stop and visit and share his knowledge of gardening.

Valdik is survived by a sister, Pauline Kukk, and several nieces and nephews of Estonia, and many cousins.

Valdik was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; infant sisters; and three brothers, Endel, Evald and Viljat.

Ole, the son of Ernest and Vernice Cummins Miller, was born June 22, 1944, in Dolliver, Iowa. He grew up in the Belmond and Rowan area, attending school in Rowan.

Ole was united in marriage with Bobbi Dillon and the couple made their home in the Belmond area.

Ole was employed as a farm hand in the Belmond and Rowan area. He later was employed by Nelson Sand and Gravel until 1985 when he retired because of ill health.

Ole enjoyed fishing, gardening, spending time with the children and reminiscing with family and friends. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Belmond.

Ole is survived by his wife, Bobbi; one daughter, Lynzie; two sons, Christopher and Devon, all at home; three sisters, Betty Jones and her husband, Dale, of Humboldt, Byrul Moore and her husband, Curtis, of Belmond, and Renee Miller of Rowan; three brothers, Ernie Miller of Hayfield, Bo Miller of Britt and Mike Miller of Rowan; two sisters-in-law, Michele Wright and her husband, Brian, of Humboldt and Jerilyn Miller of Forest City; one brother-in-law, Pat Dillon and his wife, Barb, of Clarion; one aunt, Florence Cummins of Fairmont, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

CHARLES CITY - Charlotte M. Golly, 82, formerly of Alta Vista, died Friday (Dec. 29, 2000) at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Charlotte M. Golly was born Aug. 15, 1918, in rural Alta Vista, the daughter of Bert and Clara (Doyle) Goodale. She attended Colwell school and later Deerfield school.

She was united in marriage to Robert Golly on Oct. 16, 1934, in Bethany, Mo. After their marriage the couple farmed near Alta Vista. After her husband's death in 1989, she remained on the farm until moving to Charles City in 1996.

Charlotte did custom sewing and was a seamstress for the Cinderella Shop and Band Box Cleaners until she retired.

Charlotte is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Robert) Lockwood and Linda (Bill) Hundt, both of Charles City; two sons, Kenneth (Kathy) Golly of Charles City and Harold (Priscilla) Golly of Austin, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, on Aug. 30, 1989; and one brother, Joseph Goodale.
