Merrill G. Oleson was born to Maurice and Norma (Jackman) Oleson, Sept. 29, 1936 at Estherville. He grew up on a farm and early schooling was in a one-room country school. When Merrill was 12 years of age, he and two brothers contracted polio. Several months in a Sioux City hospital delayed his schooling for a year and the effects from polio continued to challenge him. At age 10, he was introduced to the YMCA through Camp Foster on East Okoboji and after polio Merrill attended Des Moines Y Camp at Boone. He later served on the summer staff of both camps and also at the Frost Valley YMCA in New York State.

He is a graduate of Estherville High School, attended Estherville Junior College for a year, earning his bachelor’s degree from George Williams College, Chicago, Ill. Merrill’s first full-time YMCA position was at Ridgewood, NJ working with youth clubs and as director of Camp Bernie 1960-1965. He moved to Minnesota where from 1965-75 he worked for the Metropolitan Minneapolis YMCA , directing Camp Icaghowan at Amery, Wisc. His next position, 1975-1987, was with the YMCA of Greater Elgin, Ill., directing Edwards Camp and Conference Center in East Troy, Wisc. He closed out his career as Executive of the Family YMCA in Forest City, retiring in 1996.

Merrill was a member of the Forest City United Methodist Church and the North American Fellowship of YMCA Retirees. Previously he had been active on the Forest City Planning and Zoning Commission, YMCA Finance Committee, Forest City Rotary, North Central Human Services, East Troy Kiwanis and the American Camping Association.

On Sept. 9, 1967, he married Elizabeth McBurney at Anoka, Minn. He enjoyed the teamwork of YMCA members, volunteers and staff. He loved his family and the trips they were able to take together and connecting with extended family while traveling and at reunions. He enjoyed genealogy, bird and wildlife study, computers, motorhoming, attending concerts and live theater.

He is survived by his wife, Beth; a son, Jay Oleson and his wife, Jill Cody and their son, Anthony Pitts, of Milwaukee, Wisc.; daughter, Paula of Iowa City and her special friend, Jeremy Richardson; two brothers and spouses, Chauncey and Carol Oleson, of St. Cloud, Minn., Dean and Janet Oleson of Lenexa, Kan.; a sister and husband, Linda and George Williams of Bemidji, Minn.; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Oleson, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and also survived by Beth’s sister, Mary Thornton, of Forest City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both parents, his stepmother, his brothers, Douglas and Richard and a sister-in-law, Rev. Jane Oleson.

In lieu of flowers, it was Merrill’s wish that memorials be made to the Forest City YMCA Scholarship Fund at 916 West I St., Forest City, 50436. This fund was recently reinstated with the goal of providing to those in need, financial assistance with YMCA membership, program fees and college scholarships for those pursuing degrees in people-serving professions.
