MARY JANE IRENE BADKER

KASSON, Minn. - A memorial service for Mary Jane Irene Badker will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Kasson with the Rev. Adolph Quast officiating.

Mrs. Badker, 61, of 67 Windsor Court in Kasson, died Friday (Dec. 8, 2000) at Rochester Methodist Hospital, Rochester, following a courageous battle with cancer. Ranfranz Funeral Home, Rochester, is handling arrangements.

Mary Jane Irene Legler was born Nov. 24, 1939, in Sisseton, S.D., the daughter of Frederick Sr. and Marjorie Legler. She was raised in Mason City and graduated from the public school.

She married Kenneth 'Dick' Badker on June 9, 1957, in Mason City. The couple moved to California for a year, and then returned to Mason City for a few years. They have resided in Kasson since 1969. Mary Jane was an editorial assistant in medical publications with Mayo Clinic in Rochester for 20 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Rochester.

Mrs. Badker is survived by her husband, Kenneth 'Dick' Badker, of Kasson; her mother, Marjorie Golston, of Grannis, Ark.; daughters, Julie Gorvin and her husband, Greg, of Savage, Minn., Darla Madsen and her husband, Dale, of Jordan, Minn., and Michele Leqve and her husband, Jim, of Rochester; three grandchildren, Eric and Adam Gorvin, and Nik Hopkins; a brother, John Legler and his wife, Martha, of Mason City; and sisters, Linda Radcliff, Katherine Askeland and Nancy Runnells, all of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Badker; her father, Frederick Legler Sr.; and two brothers, Fred Legler Jr. and Larry Legler.

If so desired, memorials may be directed to the Virginia Piper Breast Cancer Institute at Abbot Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

LYLE "DEAN" LONEY

LITTLE CEDAR - Lyle "Dean" Loney, 66, of Little Cedar, died Friday (Dec. 8, 2000) at his home following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Little Cedar United Methodist Church, 4255 Patent Ave., Little Cedar, with the Rev. Ted Stowers officiating. Interment will be in Liberty Township Cemetery, Little Cedar, with military honors by Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.

He was born March 7, 1934, in Little Cedar, son of Merrill and Ruth (Sanders) Loney. Dean received his education in the Little Cedar School, graduating in 1952. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as Airman First Class during the Korean War. Dean returned to the Little Cedar area to farm and work at the Little Cedar Creamery with his father. He then worked for Amoco in Carpenter and Osage. Dean was a life long member of Little Cedar United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Cedar River Saddle Club and was active in the Pony Express Riders of Mitchell County.

Dean and Ruth Jensen Loney were united in marriage on March 19, 1982. They farmed together in the Osage and Little Cedar area until retiring from farming earlier this year. His greatest love was spending time with his family, grandchildren and friends.

Dean is survived by his wife, Ruth, of Little Cedar; four daughters, Beth Boggs of Morton, Ill., and her children, Adam, Maegan and Abby; Kerry Randall and husband, Danny Randall and their children, Molly and Katey, of Osage; Kelly Scheer and her children, Luke, Joshua and Tyler of Osage; and Angie Atwell and husband, Todd Atwell, and their children, Taylor, Turner and Sawyer, of Russell; one son, Kim Schwab, of Morton, Ill., and his children, Kasey and Arthur; one daughter-in-law, Sylvia Loney Howell, of Osage and her children, Nathan Loney and Justin Loney; two sisters, Vera Jean Boerjan, of Osage and Sharon Cook and husband, Fred Cook, of Clear Lake; many nieces and nephews; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Art and Evelyn Jensen, of St. Ansgar.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Daniel Dean Loney.

LAKE MILLS - Russell H. Simonson, 95, of Lake Mills, formerly of Mansfield Township, Minn., died Saturday (Dec. 9, 2000) at the Albert Lea Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Kiester, Minn., with the Rev. Richard Steffen officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, rural Kiester.

CHARLES JOSEPH MCCLUNG

MASON CITY - Charles Joseph McClung, 68, of 659 Briarstone Drive, A5, Mason City, died Sunday (Dec. 10, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A memorial Mass will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. David Kucera of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date. His request was to be cremated.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or Newman Catholic Schools.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m. His family would like all his friends and family to come and bring their memories to share.

Charles Joseph McClung was born July 5, 1932, in Mason City, to Chester J. and Leone (Hughes) McClung. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Mason City and attended Mason City Junior College and the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1954.

On Sept. 7, 1957, he was united in marriage with Virginia Erickson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City. Charles worked with his father at the Golden Oak, as a laborer with Local 552 and later as the business agent for Local 552. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge. He continued to serve his community by serving on the Planning and Zoning Committee, the Mason City Building and Trades Council, the Iowa Labor District Council and the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association Honor Guard. He was a volunteer at the Mason City Food Bank and RSVP.

Charles is survived by his wife, Virginia McClung, Mason City; son, Michael McClung, Mason City; son, David McClung and wife, Deb, Mason City; daughter, Janice Holtkamp and husband, Derald, Ames; daughter, Julie McClung, of Des Moines; son, Scott McClung and wife, Jodi, of Council Bluffs; grandchildren, Christopher and Daniel McClung, Joshua and Isaac Holtkamp and Collin and Alexis McClung; brother, James McClung and wife, Beverly, of Edina, Minn.; and sister, Rosemary Cahalan and husband, Emerson, Mason City.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, John and Barry.

LAURA M. BADKER

CLEAR LAKE - Laura M. Badker, 97, died Sunday night (Dec. 10, 2000) at the Oakwood Care Center, Highway 18 W. in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or the United Methodist Women in Clear Lake.

Laura was born Oct. 9, 1903, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Harry and Mary (Juhl) Welker. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1922.

Laura married Roy W. Badker on July 5, 1924, in rural Clear Lake where they lived until moving into town in 1968.

She was active in the Lakeside Church, and then joined the Clear Lake United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Friendship Club in Clear Lake. While living on the farm she raised chickens and gardened.

Laura is survived by her son, Wayne "Bud" Badker and his wife, LaVohn, of Clear Lake; two grandsons, Dennis Badker and his wife, Karen, of Klemme, and John Risse and his wife, Diana, of Ames; four great-grandchildren, Scott and Curt Badker, of Clear Lake, and Heather and Ryan Risse, of Ames.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy (Nov. 4, 1976); a daughter, Theone Risse; son-in-law, Arthur Risse; and one brother, Howard Welker.

ELEANORE ANNA (LESCH) NUTT

DAYTON - Eleanore Anna (Lesch) Nutt, 87, died early Sunday morning (Dec. 10, 2000) at her home in Dayton.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Dayton, with the Rev. John J. Hembry officiating. Following services, a luncheon will be served at the church.

Burial of ashes will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the Osage Cemetery in Osage. There will also be a gathering at the United Methodist Church in Osage immediately following burial there.

Eleanore was born on Dec. 10, 1913, in Osage, the daughter of John and Anna (Graper) Witt. She grew up in rural Osage and attended schools in Plymouth, graduating with the Plymouth High School Class of 1931.

She then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating with a teaching certificate. Following her education she taught school for several years in Mitchell County, Iowa.

Eleanore was united in marriage to Leroy R. Lesch on June 25, 1939, in Plymouth. They established their home on an acreage west of Osage. The couple owned and operated Lesch Oil Company. Leroy passed away Jan. 29, 1971.

On Oct. 23, 1976, Eleanore married Woodrow Nutt in Des Moines. They moved to his farm in Dayton, where they lived until Woodrow's death in 1988. She then moved to the Grandview Apartments in Dayton where she remained until her death.

Eleanore was a member of the United Methodist Church in Dayton and also belonged to the United Methodist Women. She had belonged to the Dayton Golf & Country Club, Women's Club, Arts & Crafts Club, Exercise Club, Dayton Card Clubs and Dayton Dreamers. She was also active in the Dayton Development Group.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Gene and Elaine Lesch, of Lake Panorama, Iowa, and James and Dorothy Lesch, of Nashville, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Suzanne Lesch and Steve and his wife, Brenda Lesch; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Breanna Lesch; several brothers and sisters-in-laws; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leroy R. Lesch on Jan. 29, 1971; husband, Woodrow M. Nutt on April 18, 1988; two sisters, Harold Witt and Roy Witt; and a sister, Mildred Goplerud.

Memorials may be directed to the Dayton Rescue Squad or the United Methodist Church in Dayton.

ARLYS L. 'MICKEY' DEMRO

NASHUA - Arlys L. "Mickey" Demro passed away Sunday (Dec. 10, 2000) at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following surgery.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, with the Rev. Dave and the Rev. JoAnn Kramer officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Chenoweth & Son Funeral Home in Nashua.

She was born in Woden, Iowa on July 6, 1928, the daughter of Helmeth and Bertha (Davis) Lundgren. Mickey attended and received her education at Woden and Crystal Lake Schools and graduated in 1944. She attended Allen Memorial School of Nursing in Waterloo.

Mickey was united in marriage to Stuart A. Demro on Dec. 24, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union, three daughters were born, Mary, Paula and Carol. She worked for Drs. Clark, Tolliver and Trefz until her retirement in 1990. She touched many, many lives during her years of employment.

She was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, Hospice, Nashua Town & Country Club and received the Charles City "Citizen Award of Merit" in 1983.

She enjoyed playing golf and bridge, wood carving, travel and spending her winters in Arizona with her many friends. She also loved spending time and attending various activities of her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Stuart, of Nashua; three daughters and their spouses, Mary and Steve Nicholson, of Osage, Paula and Steve Woodin, of Des Moines, and Carol and Daryl Powell, of Incline Village, Nev.; eight grandchildren, Mike and Matt Nicholson, of Osage, Scott, Greg and Janelle Woodin, of Des Moines, and Clint, Mitchell and Cameron Powell, of Incline Village, Nev.; four sisters, Trudy Greene and her husband, Bill, of Wesley, Phyllis Schmidt, of Waverly, Pat Hill and her husband, Gerald, of Ramona, Calif. and Jean Wolff and her husband, Peter, of Melborne Beach, Fla.; one brother, Ron Lundgren, of Medford, Ore.; many nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and two sisters.

MASON CITY - Richard L. Bailey, 75, of 116 Meadow Lane, died Saturday (Dec. 9, 2000) at the USA Healthcare.

Dick was born March 10, 1925, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Roy and Dorothy (Bucknam) Bailey. His family moved to Mason City in 1930. He graduated from Mason City High School, continued his education at Mason City Junior College, Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., and the University of Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1943 to 1946. Dick worked for McKesson-Robbins Co. of Cedar Rapids from 1948 to 1950. In 1950 he was employed by the Bankers Life Insurance Company. He then moved to Mason City with Bankers Life and was appointed agency manager for Bankers Life in 1956. He retired from Bankers Life Insurance Co., now Principal Life Insurance, in 1987 as agency manager.

Dick was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church serving as a member of the Board of Trustees, Sunday School teacher and on various committees. He served on numerous community boards including the United Way, YMCA, Jaycees, United Home Bank, Chamber of Commerce, Mercy Foundation, Boy Scouts, Lions Club, Mason City School Board, Mason City Country Club, Muse Norris Foundation and the Mason City Foundation.

He was a proponent of community development, expansion and growth through the Mason City Development Corp. which fostered the formation of Southbridge Mall and Industrial Park. He maintained his professional involvement presiding as president of the local and the Iowa Life Underwriters Associations. In his spare time, Dick attempted to play golf and catch fish.

Dick is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alyce, of Mason City; son, David Bailey, of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Deborah Astroth and her husband, Jeffrey, of Denver, Colo.; son, John Bailey, of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Barbara Fitzgerald and her husband, Paul, of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Robert Bailey and his wife, Colleen, of Bellvue, Wash., John C. "Jack" Bailey and his wife, Shirley, of Sun City West, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Jerry Bailey.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 N. Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Frederick J. Wood officiating. Flag presentation and taps will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association at the church. Interment will be in Rock Falls Cemetery in Rock Falls.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. and one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be given to the Rodney Hansen Memorial Fund.

Rod Hansen was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Rock Falls, Iowa, the son of George and Bertha (Coonrod) Hansen. He graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in the infantry and was wounded in Southern France.

Rod married Alta Bergman in 1946 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City. Rod worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 40 years retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Alta, of Mason City; daughter, Cyndi Velthoff and her husband, George, of Mason City; son, Jay Michael Hansen and his wife, Cynthia, of Mason City; grandchildren, Jennifer Velthoff, of Mason City, Molly Melendez and her husband, Carlos, of Mason City, Anne and Wil Hansen, of Mason City; great-granddaughters, Clarissa and Chloe Melendez, of Mason City; sister, Shirley Wyborny and husband, Roger, of Rock Falls; sister-in-law, Mary Hansen, of Rock Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, George "Jay" Hansen, of Rock Falls.

MASON CITY - Donald E. ‘The Frog’ Herzog, 71, of 819 South Van Buren, died Sunday December 10, 2000 at his home.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday (December 14,2000) at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl Ries officiating.  Interment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4-8pm with a Rosary at 7 P.M. at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St. SE.

Donald was born November 21, 1929, in Mason City, the son of Walter and Millie (Redmanovich) Herzog.  He received his education from St. Joseph Catholic School where he was active in baseball and basketball.   He lived most of his life on Powder Puff St., the melting pot of Mason City.  Donald played softball with the Junior Legion Team- the Decker Brothers of Mason City.  He was known for his hoping around 2nd base, earning the nickname “Frog”.  Donald enjoyed boxing and watching the Mohawks and the Iowa Hawkeyes play basketball.  Donald had such a passion for the Minn. Vikings that he would bet Lloyd Knapp one dollar that the Vikings would take it home.  For the first two games “The Frog” won.  Being so proud of his Vikings he framed those two dollars and hung them on the wall, reminding Lloyd who was the best team.  For the next several years, Lloyd won but those two dollars still remain on the wall.  His heart was devoted to his family and friends and treasured all the laughs they shared and always tried to be at least a half a step ahead.

His memories are left to be cherished by; a special friend, Nancy Knapp of Mason City; 1 daughter, Kathy and her husband(Mike) Manning of St. Paul, MN. 7 special children; 1 brother, Richard Herzog of Mason City; 13 special grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

JAMES A. RIEKENS

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - James A. Riekens, 80, of Bloomington died peacefully at home on Monday (Dec. 11, 2000) surrounded by family members after a four-month courageous fight with cancer.

Survived by loving wife, Wanda; wonderful father to Jamie; mother, Lois, of Mason City; three brothers, Norman (Mary Jo), Edward (Aileen), and Sidney, of Mason City; four sisters, Sharron (Richard) Lunning, Janyce Riekens, of Mason City, Dianne (Carlton) Lee, of Mason City and Judy Hubbard, of Mason City; mother-in-law, Franklyn Hanson; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was retired from the VA Medical Center. James was an avid fisherman and hunter and a bus driver for the Jefferson Girls Hockey team.

DR. RICHARD LAWTON

IOWA CITY - Dr. Richard Lawton, professor emeritus of surgery at the University of Iowa, died Wednesday (Dec. 6, 2000) in Iowa City, after an extended illness at the age of 82. Dr. Lawton deeded his body to the University of Iowa Hospital.

Dr. Lawton was born June 18, 1918, in Shenandoah, Iowa, to Francis J. Lawton and Lillian (Kuhl) Lawton. He attended schools in Omaha, Neb., and graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical School in 1940.

He served as a physician in the Far East during World War II in the Marine Corps, and retired from the Navy with the rank of Captain.

He married Dolores Ewing in 1943. He will be greatly missed by his wife and seven children, Richard Jr., Sioux, Kristen, Joe, David, Dolores and Damian.

Dr. Lawton was a professor of surgery at the University of Iowa and V.A. Hospitals in Iowa City. During those years he performed the first kidney dialysis in Iowa and the state's first kidney transplant in 1969. He founded the Midwest's first Kidney Dialysis Unit in Iowa City at the V.A. Hospital and the Iowa Donor Network.

He was also instrumental in establishing the organ donation requests on driver's licenses. Dr. Lawton left for a short period of time to begin the Transplantation Unit in the Department of Surgery at Texas Tech University at Lubbock as its director and retired from medicine in 1988 from the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines.

He remained active and involved in the arts and humanities which were among his many interests.

MASON CITY - Robert O. Bowen, 79, of 1021 12th St. N.E., died Sunday (Dec. 10, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Robert O. Bowen was born on July 18, 1930, in Mason City, the son of Rupert and Daisy Mae (Moore) Bowen. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1948 and received Associate of Arts Degrees from NIACC. Robert's military career lasted for 21 years and took him to Europe, Korea and the United States. While serving in Salzburg, Austria, he married his wife, Inge.

After his retirement in 1971 he worked for the North Iowa Area Crime Commission, the Iowa Department of Revenue and Hawkeye Auto Body.

Robert was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the V.F.W. and several genealogy associations.

He is survived by his wife, Inge, of Mason City; two sons, Robert and Connie (Bancroft) Bowen, of Canton, Ohio; children, Anaise, Rebekah, Emily and Elliot, and Michael R. Bowen, of Mason City; and three daughters, Sylvia Ann (Bowen) Bard and husband, Douglas, and their daughter, Melodie, of Champlin, Minn., Cynthia Bowen and husband, John Brown and their children, Whitney, Vanessa, and Spencer, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Katrina Mae Bowen, of Mason City, Iowa. He is also survived by his brothers, Chester A. Bowen, of Big Bear City, Calif., and James R. Bowen, of Harrison, Ark.

EDWARD R. KLUSSMAN

MASON CITY - Edward R. Klussman, 78, of Mason City died Monday (Dec. 11, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A Memorial Service will be held 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Carl A. Ries of St. Joseph Catholic Church officiating. According to Mr. Klussman's wishes, his body has been donated to the Mayo Clinic Department of Anatomy in Rochester, Minn.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army, 203 First St. S.W., Mason City.

Edward was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Charleston, W.V., the son of Adolf and Rupeta (Romero) Klussmann. He was raised and attended school in Brainerd, Minn. He worked as a member of the Civil Corps of Engineers building the Al Can Highway in Alaska, and then during World War II in North Africa, Italy and Portugal as a Construction Engineer building air strips. After the war, he worked as an insurance salesman in Des Moines.

Edward was united in marriage to Helen R. Bishop on June 27, 1977, in Mason City. He worked as a bartender/cashier for the Holiday Inn in Mason City for many years until his retirement.

Edward had dreams of being a professional musician that he turned into a love of collecting music, especially opera, classical and jazz. He was an avid reader, mostly of novels about World War II and books on scientific themes.

Edward also enjoyed art and observing the constellations through a telescope. He took great care in landscaping and keeping up a large fishpond in his back yard.

Edward is survived by his wife, Helen, of Mason City; one sister, Louise Day, of Canal Winchester, Ohio; three stepchildren, Bert W. Bishop of Brookfield, Ill., Miriam A. Bishop of Fairfax Station, Va., and Virginia L. Bishop of Pittstown, N.J., 11 stepgrandchildren; and two nieces.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents.

MASON CITY - Rodney Hansen, 75, of 812 16th St. N.E., died Sunday (Dec. 10, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Rod Hansen was born Sept. 11, 1925, in Rock Falls, Iowa, the son of George and Bertha (Coonrod) Hansen. He graduated from Rock Falls High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the infantry, and was wounded in southern France.

Rod married Alta Bergman in 1946 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City. Rod worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 40 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife, Alta, of Mason City; daughter, Cyndi Velthoff and her husband, George, of Mason City; son, Jay Michael Hansen and his wife, Cynthia, of Mason City; grandchildren, Jennifer Velthoff, of Mason City, Molly Melendez and her husband, Carlos, of Mason City, Anne and Wil Hansen of Mason City; great-granddaughters, Clarissa and Chloe Melendez, of Mason City; sister, Shirley Wyborny and husband, Roger, of Rock Falls; sister-in-law, Mary Hansen, of Rock Falls; and several nieces and nephews.

MASON CITY - Charles Joseph McClung, 68, of 659 Briarstone Drive, A5, Mason City, died Sunday (Dec. 10, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A memorial Mass will be held at noon today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. David Kucera of St. Joseph's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date. His request was to be cremated.

Charles Joseph McClung was born July 5, 1932, in Mason City, to Chester J. and Leone (Hughes) McClung. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School in Mason City and attended Mason City Junior College and the University of Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant in 1954.

On Sept. 7, 1957, he was united in marriage with Virginia Erickson at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mason City. Charles worked with his father at the Golden Oak, as a laborer with Local 552 and later as the business agent for Local 552. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the American Legion, the Moose Lodge and Eagles Lodge. He continued to serve his community by serving on the Planning and Zoning Committee, the Mason City Building and Trades Council, the Iowa Labor District Council and the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association Honor Guard. He was a volunteer at the Mason City Food Bank and RSVP.

Charles is survived by his wife, Virginia McClung, Mason City; son, Michael McClung, Mason City; son, David McClung and wife, Deb, Mason City; daughter, Janice Holtkamp and husband, Derald, Ames; daughter, Julie McClung of Des Moines; son, Scott McClung and wife, Jodi, of Council Bluffs; grandchildren, Christopher and Daniel McClung, Joshua and Isaac Holtkamp and Collin and Alexis McClung; brother, James McClung and wife, Beverly, of Edina, Minn.; and sister, Rosemary Cahalan and husband, Emerson, Mason City.

HAMPTON - Elmer L. Miller, 84, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000) at his home.

GARY WILLIAMS

Gary L. Williams, 63, of Girdwood, Alaska, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in his home at Portage Glacier Lodge after a long and valiant struggle with Crohn's disease and renal cancer.

Services were held Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at the Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel in Anchorage, Alaska, by Dr. Michael Mitchell. At Gary's request, next spring his family will scatter his ashes over the family farm east of Corwith.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; a daughter, Geri Williams and grandson, Lee Richard Pendegraff, of Girdwood, Alaska, Roger Lee Williams, daughter-in-law, Charlene and granddaughter, Ashley Jean Williams, all of Anchorage; and his parents, Lee and Betty Williams, of Corwith; sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Steve Linn, of Solon; brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Debra Williams, of Cedar Rapids; a niece, Angela Linn, of Fairbanks, Alaska; and nephew, Shawn Linn, of Iowa City.

Gary was born June 2, 1937, on the Williams family farm near Corwith. A Coe College graduate of 1968, he received his master's degree in experiential education from Mankato State University in 1974 and did additional graduate work at Drake University.

With his family, Gary owned and operated Portage Glacier Lodge since moving to Alaska in 1983 following a tenure as executive director of the Cedar Rapids Children's Home (now Tanager Place). Gary coordinated relocation of the Children's Home to the current Tanager Place site.

Previously he farmed with his parents, drove Greyhound buses out of Chicago to earn college tuition, taught middle school in Cedar Rapids and was a secondary curriculum consultant for 22 years in the Green Valley Area Education Agency in southwest Iowa. A community activist, he was past president of the Cedar Rapids Federation of Teachers, a member of Rotary, Elks, and Optimist clubs and Phi Delta Kappa.

Gary loved kids, many cold blustery nights found him on the Optimist Club's Christmas tree lot, which benefited kids. His family says, "Gary was a man of many trades and a master of most, who never lost an opportunity to teach and instruct, leaving all of us with the life skills he knew we would need."

Over the years, many of Gary's Iowa friends frequently visited with him and his family at Portage Glacier, enjoying the warm hospitality that reinvigorated their loving respect for their friends. He will be greatly missed.

CLEAR LAKE - Donn E. White, 89, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Dec. 10, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

Donn was born in Iowa Falls, the son of Jess M. and Cora (Wohlford) White. The family moved to Hampton, where he graduated from Hampton High School and started his newspaper career as a printer for the Hampton Chronicle and Record.

Donn married Rosemary (Pose) Jeanne Whitney Oct. 10, 1932, in Freeport, Ill. During WorldWar II, Donn worked at Lockheed on the design of the P38 and XP80 airplanes. He continued his newspaper career in advertising for the Pontiac (Mich) News and Alhambra (Calif) Post-Advocate before coming to Mason City and joining the Globe Gazette advertising staff in 1947. As publisher of the Globe Gazette, he helped usher the newspaper into the age of modern technology, retiring after 27 years. After his retirement he ran for Clear Lake City Council because of what he saw as an obligation to serve. "People that lived here 100 years ago did things to improve the town for me to live in. I felt it was my responsibility to do the same for the future," he said in 1978.

Donn was a longtime resident of Clear Lake and was active in many civic activities in North Iowa. He served on the boards of the Mason City United Fund, Junior Achievement, Mason City Development Association and the North Iowa Fair Association. He was also active in Mason City Toastmasters, Mason City Kiwanis Club and the Winnebago Council of Boy Scouts. He was a past master of the Verity Masonic Lodge in Clear Lake and was a member of Bethel Chapter, Royal Arch Masons.

Donn loved to do wood carving, sculpting, and making jewelry. Family was extremely important to Donn. Also, he enjoyed activities around the lake, making sure the birds were fed throughout the long Iowa winters.

Donn is survived by his wife, Rosemary (Pose) White, Mason City; five children, Diane Ashland and her husband, Lloyd, Clear Lake, Judi Hansen and her husband, Norm, El Segundo, Calif., David White and his wife, Christina, Janesville, Wis., Rosemary "Jeanne" Achenbach, Arlington Heights, Ill, and Ruth Ann McMonagle and her husband, John, De Pere, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one brother, John White and his wife, Helen, Sebastian, Fla.


Donn was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Hazel, Delores and Ellen; and four brothers, Arthur, Lester, Theodore and Harold.

VERLE 'BUB' KERAUS

GARNER - Verle "Bub" Keraus, 84, of Garner died Thursday (Dec. 14, 2000) at his home.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Roger Kallem officiating. Burial will be at Concord Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home and will continue one hour before services on Saturday at the church.

Verle "Bub" William Keraus, the son of William and Lola (Kluckhohn) Keraus, was born Nov. 18, 1916, at Klemme. He attended school at Klemme, where he graduated from high school in 1934. Bub joined the C.C.C. and worked at Bedford, Council Bluffs and Forest City, where he helped construct the tower at Pilot Knob State Park. He then worked at Swea City for five years as the assistant manager of the Northern Lumber Company.

On May 20, 1941, he married Elaine Martha Buntenbach at the United Church of Christ in Klemme. They made their home in Garner, where he was employed by the Garner Livestock Auction Company until retiring in 1976.

Bub and Elaine spent the winter months at their home in Naples, Fla. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and fishing, especially in the Gulf of Mexico with his friends.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, served on the board of trustees and was a former member of the Garner Rotary Club.

Bub is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Garner; three children, Michael Keraus and his wife, Susie, of Boone, Kay Henderson and her husband, Dale, of Plano, Texas, and Lynn Keraus and his wife, Gail, of Garner; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Otho Keraus.

PETER 'PETE' SMITH

BRITT - Peter "Pete" Smith, 95, of Britt, died Wednesday (Dec. 13, 2000) at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

The funeral will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church, with Pastor Peter Schmidlkofer and Pastor Larry Ostercamp officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Britt, with a Masonic service at 6:30 p.m.

Peter "Pete" Paul Smith, the son of Charles and Matilda (Kline) Smith was born Dec. 25, 1904, at Melrose. He attended the rural schools in Iowa.

On Dec. 11, 1927, he married Mary Bernice Bowen at Chariton. They lived in Ottumwa, Russell, Goodell, Britt and in 1955 moved to Woden. In 1970 they retired from farming and continued to live in Woden. Pete had resided at Westview Care Center in Britt since September of 1999.

He enjoyed fishing and traveling to both Florida and Texas. He attended the Evangelical Free Church in Britt and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Britt.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Tegtmeyer and her husband, Richard, of Britt; two grandsons, Shane Tegtmeyer and his wife, Barbara, and their two children, Ashley and Andrew, all of Algona, and Brad Tegtmeyer and his wife, Kristy, and their daughter, Alyssa, all of Wesley; and a sister, Mildred Frimodt, of Lansing, Mich.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Smith, on May 2, 1989; his son, Paul Dean Smith; a great granddaughter, Emily Tegtmeyer; his parents; and a brother, Floyd Smith.

MARY ANN HUGHES

CLEAR LAKE - Mary Ann Hughes, 84, of Clear Lake, died Thursday (Dec. 14, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City.

A Memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church in Clear Lake, with Pastor Thomas Healey officiating. There will be military honors by the Clear Lake V.F.W. at the church. An inurnment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church Music Fund.

Mary Ann was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Melville Prince and Celia (Clack) Hughes. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1934, Mason City Junior College in 1936 and Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines in 1940.

She enlisted in the Army Nurses Corps Jan. 19, 1943; in September 1944 she served in France and Germany in the 180th General Hospital, where she was Mobile Army Hospital Chief Nurse. She obtained the Rank of Captain Dec. 6, 1946, and was honorably discharged Jan. 29, 1946. Mary Ann was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Award.

She moved back to Mason City and worked at the Park Hospital until her retirement in 1979. She was on the committee that set the Practical Nursing Program at NIACC and later the two-year Register Nurse Program.

Mary Ann enjoyed needlework, reading, her rose garden and doing yard work. She was a real sports fan, loved working on the angels at church and especially loved her family. She enjoyed fixing things around the house, painting and wallpapering.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Clear Lake, and a 65-year member of the P.E.O. Chapter EA and a life member of the American Legion.

Mary Ann is survived by two sisters, Margaret Doudna, of Colorado Springs, Colo. And Katherine Short, of Mason City; one brother, Richard Hughes and his wife, Joan, of Clear Lake; and eight nieces and 11 nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Melville "Bud" Hughes; and one sister, Elizabeth Morrissey; two nephews; and one niece.
