ALGONA - Sean Michael Beisch, 8, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at Fairview University Hospital, Minneapolis, Minn.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Algona, with the Rev. Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Garry-Robert-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Algona. A rosary will begin at 3 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.

WHITTEMORE - Ralph M. Walker, 88, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Good Samaritan Center, Algona.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Whittemore, with the Rev. Michael Botsford officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Whittemore.

HUGO T. "BUTCH" SCHISSEL

ROCKWELL - Hugo T. "Butch" Schissel, 86, 128 N. Third St., Apt. 3, and formerly of rural Rockwell and Rockford, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at his residence.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 309 Elm St. East, Rockwell, with the Rev. Richard Ball and the Rev. Leo Riley as concelebrants. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Parish Center, 316 Third St. North, Rockwell, where a parish vigil scriptural wake service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the parish center. Fullerton Funeral Home, Rockwell, is in charge of arrangements.

Hugo Truman "Butch" Schissel was born May 21, 1914, in Iona Lake, Minn., the son of Frank Peter and Christine Rachel (Kenebeck) Schissel.

On July 3, 1944, at the former St. John Catholic Church, Cartersville, Iowa, Butch was united in marriage to M. Mildred. The couple made their home for many years in the rural Rockwell and Rockford areas before moving into the city of Rockwell.

Butch was formerly employed at Crystal Sugar Beet plant in Mason City. For 20 years, Butch was employed at the former Rockford Brick and Tile Company. He retired in 1976. Butch also did a considerable amount of farming, both as his sole occupation and when he worked for Crystal Sugar and Rockford Brick and Tile.

Butch was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell. In his spare time he enjoyed watching birds and hopping on his riding mower to mow lawns.

Those thankful for sharing Butch's life are his wife of over 55 years, Mildred, of Rockwell; five children and their spouses, Mary Jean and Jerry Ball of Dennison, Bob and Sue Schissel of Rockwell, Kay and John Sanders of Mason City, Ron and Mary Schissel of Dougherty and Chris and Fred Lundt of Rockwell; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; one sister; and a son, Gary Schissel.

LAVERNE GERALD BAKEMAN

ROCKFORD - LaVerne Gerald Bakeman, 95, of 109 Seventh St. N.W., died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Fullerton-Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main Ave., Rockford, with the Rev. Richard Sutton, retired pastor of Remnant Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Nora Springs, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford, with graveside military honors conducted by Walker Graper American Legion Post No. 338 of Rockford.

GLADYS MAE AMUNDSON

CLEAR LAKE - Gladys Mae Amundson, 89, of 1009 Third Ave. S., died Thursday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit of North Iowa, Mason City.

Services are tentatively scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

EAGLE GROVE - Emma L. Johnson, 93, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Congregational United Church of Christ, Clarion, with the Rev. Curt Miner officiating. There will be a private family burial at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 today at Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, with the family present.

ROBERT "BOB" FRENCH

OSAGE - Robert "Bob" French, 46, of Salina, Kan., formerly of Osage, died Thursday (Nov. 23, 2000) in Salina.

A memorial inurnment service will be held at noon Saturday, Dec. 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Osage, with the Rev. Philip Recker officiating.

INA MARKWARDT BURGER

HAMPTON - Ina Markwardt Burger, 84, passed away Saturday (Nov. 25, 2000) at the Hampton Care Center, Hampton.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton. Burial was in the Alexander Cemetery.

She was born on Aug. 13, 1916, near Blairsburg to Tom Oscar Markwardt and Margaret Ellen Nicholson. Ina attended country schools in Iowa and Minnesota and graduated from Chapin High School with the class of 1934. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and taught country school in Franklin County for one year.

Ina married Laurell A. Burger on Nov. 17, 1935, in Osage. They purchased a farm southeast of Alexander where they moved in March 1943 and lived until Laurell's death in 1961.

She worked for several area families stricken with illness. She then worked for Herwig Stationary. For several years she worked for Yelland and Hanes.

She was a member of the Women's Club, Hampton Garden Club, Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary, Alexander Cemetery Society and the Good Luck Club. Ina enjoyed distributing mail at the hospital, taking friends for rides and caring for her houseplants and large raspberry patch in her small backyard.

Ina is survived by her three daughters, Marilyn (Lloyd) Tagesen, Hampton, Frances (Ralph) Tagesen, Clear Lake, and Ilene (Bob) Abbas, Hampton; her sister, Lola (Calvin) Schulte, Alexander; nine grandchildren, Tammy Tagesen, Kim (Abbas) Toftner, Matthew Abbas, Marty Tagesen, Jody Abbas, Jennifer (Poyser) Dodd, Amy (Abbas) Mathes, Kendall Poyser, Dustin Abbas; five great-grandchildren, Josie Abbas, Ashley Tagesen, Drew Abbas, Willow Tagesen and Dayna Dodd.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers in infancy; and her husband, Laurell, in 1961.

MASON CITY - Laura K. Lang, 84, of 806 N. Connecticut Ave., died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at Good Shepherd Care Center, Mason City.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Cahill officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with a rosary beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume one hour prior to service time at the church Saturday.

Memorials may be directed to Holy Family Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Laura K. Lang was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Meyer, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Thersa (Thome) Hemann. She grew up in Johnsburg, Minn., where she attended school. She later moved to Austin, Minn.

On June 26, 1939, she was united in marriage to Carl J. Lang during a ceremony in Albert Lea, Minn. Following their marriage they moved to Mason City where they made their home.

Laura was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the St. Gregory Guild. She enjoyed spending her free time fishing, playing cards, gardening, tending flowers and canning.

Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 61 years, Carl J. Lang of Mason City; three sons, Eugene Lang and his wife, Bette, of Winnsboro, Texas, Dean Lang of Mason City, and Duane Lang and his wife, Helen, of Marshalltown; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertie Lamar and her husband, Frank, of Manly; half-brothers, Ernie, Francis, Art and Clem; and half-sisters, Olivia and Evonne.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Theresa; a grandson; two sisters; two half-brothers; and a half-sister.

DORIS D. LEEWRIGHT

MASON CITY - Doris D. Leewright, 80, of 222 S. Pierce Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at USA Healthcare, Mason City.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with full military rites by the Mason City Memorial Association.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, and one hour prior to the service time at the church Saturday.

Doris D. Leewright was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Scranton, to Hans H. and Goldie L. (Squibb) Smith. Doris enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and was discharged as a Disabled American Veteran in 1947. She will be honored accordingly at the service.

Following her discharge from five years of service, she returned to the Mason City area and later married Joseph Walter E. Leewright on Jan. 30, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Following their marriage they purchased a farm near Kensett and adopted a family of four children.

Doris went on to receive her G.E.D. and a L.P.N degree through North Iowa Area Community College. She later moved to Manly until retirement when she moved back to Mason City.

She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, V.F.W. and active in a bowling league. Her hobbies were sewing, loving all animals and traveling in foreign countries as well as the U.S.

Doris is survived by two daughters, Penny Jane Weaver and her husband, John Bauer, of Richmond, Va., and Debra Schelling and her husband, James, of Marshalltown; two sons, Ronald D. Leewright and his wife, Donna, of Ponca City, Okla., and Martin B. Leewright of Denton, Texas; two sisters, Lila Mathews of Mason City and Sharon McBride and her husband, George, of St. Paul, Minn.; two brothers, Vernon Smith and his wife, Bernedette, of Nuevo, Calif., and Gerald Smith and his wife, Jackie, of Mason City; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews including Linda Starbuck and her husband, Dave, of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Joseph Walter E. Leewright; two sisters, Juanita Riser and Dixie Carrott; and four grandchildren.

WHITTEMORE - Mary Josephine "Mae" McDonnell, 86, of Whittemore, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at the Alvarado Hospital in San Diego, Calif., from complications from heart surgery.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Whittemore, with the Rev. Victor Ramaeker, the Rev. Robert Condon and the Rev. Dale George concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Whittemore.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Whittemore with a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. parish prayer service.

GLADYS MAE AMUNDSON

CLEAR LAKE - Gladys Mae Amundson, 89, 1009 Third Ave. S., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Nov. 29, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Gladys was born Aug. 4, 1911, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Albert and Anna (Johnson) Hanna. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1929.

Gladys married Burdette Irvin Amundson on June 20, 1930, in Rockwell. She worked as a receptionist for General Medicine in Clear Lake from 1964-1983.

Her hobbies included sewing, being a seamstress, reading and painting. She loved fishing and hunting.

Gladys is survived by her son, Jerry Amundson and his wife, Beverly, of Merriam, Kan.; one daughter, JoAnne Montilla and her husband, Jose, of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter-in-law, Yasuko Amundson; one sister-in-law, June Hanna, of Clear Lake; eight grandchildren, Sherry Camargo and her husband, Danial, of Wichita, Kan., Cynthia Harmison and her husband, Scot, of Lenexa, Kan., Eric Amundson and his wife, Laura, of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Christina Tyndall, of Clear Lake, Melodie Hagspiel and her husband Klaus, of Charlottesville, Va., Alicia Biggers and her husband, Brian, of Orlando, Fla., Melinda Montilla, of Orlando, Fla., and Rick Amundson, of Clear Lake; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Burdette on Nov. 8, 1963, one son, Ronald, in February of 2000; five brothers, Tom, Oliver, Leonard, Raymond, and Harry Hanna; and one sister, Ruth Hanna.

CLARENCE NOREM

CLEAR LAKE - Clarence Norem, 61, of Caldwell, Idaho, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at his home.

Clarence was born Jan. 30, 1939, in Alexander, Iowa, to Bart and Irene Norem. He attended school at Alexander and Fertile, Iowa. He continued his education at Waldorf Junior College in Forest City, Iowa. He then served as a Medical Corpsman in the United States Army from Dec.13, 1961, to Dec.12, 1963, when he was honorably discharged.

Clarence Norem was united in marriage to Georgia (Swain) Stockwell on Aug. 19, 1995 in Clear Lake.

Clarence worked for 26 years and retired on Oct.1, 1999, from Farmers Lumber Co. in Clear Lake. He and his wife, Georgia, then moved to Caldwell, Idaho, to enjoy his retirement.

Clarence is survived by his loving wife Georgia; daughter, Tina Ann Norem, of Clear Lake; stepdaughter, Nicole Calixtro, and two grandchildren, Ashley and Anna, of Charles City, Iowa; his mother, Irene Norem, of Vinton; four brothers, Maurice, of Clear Lake, Bernard, of Mason City, Kenneth, of Lubbock, Texas, and Richard, of Van Horne; also numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Clarence was an easy person to like and will be missed by all.

Arrangements are being handled by Flahiff Funeral Chapel in Caldwell, Idaho.

A memorial service will be held for friends and family from 2 p.m. though 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, in the Lavik Room at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

NORMAN J. MARTIN

CLEAR LAKE - Norman Jay Martin, 61, 240 S. James St., Grimes, died Thursday (Nov. 30, 2000) at his home.

Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Rev. Kermit Roisen officiating. Interment will be at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Monday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Norman Jay Martin Memorial Fund.

Norman was born Feb. 28, 1939, in Kirksville, Mo., the son of Asa and Martha (Lawrence) Martin. They lived in Unionville, Mo. where he worked with his father in roofing.

He married Donna Jean Dirks on Oct. 20, 1960, and then began living in north Iowa. They moved to Runnells, Iowa where he did a lot of hot tar command roofing. He started N.J. Martin Roofing. They moved to Des Moines and lived there until 1999 when he moved to Grimes.

Norman enjoyed watching his boys play baseball, snowmobiling and roller-skating. He was an avid Vikings fan. He also liked to barbecue, camp, drive around, play pool and also go to many pool tournaments.

Norman is survived by four children, Nancy Gift and her husband, Mark, of Creston, Debbie Knight and her husband, Terri, of Sioux City, Iowa, Keith Martin and his wife, Jeanie, of Des Moines, and Steve Martin and his wife, Kerri, of Altoona; one sister, Gloria Nauman and her husband, Emmett, of Floyd; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Donna Jean on Sept. 29, 2000, two sisters, Betty Downey and Bonnie Medlin; three brothers, Tom Martin, Sonny Martin and an infant brother.

RUDD - Robert M. Norby, 79, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

LAVERNE GERALD BAKEMAN

ROCKFORD - LaVerne Gerald Bakeman, 95, of 109 Seventh St. N.W., died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at the Nora Springs Care Center.

LaVerne Gerald Bakeman was born July 15, 1905, in Rockford, the son of Charles F. and Mary Catherine Nigg Gifford Bakeman. He graduated as the salutatorian of Rockford High School in 1924. He was first employed at the former Oliver Tractor Factory in Charles City, rising to the position of the bookkeeper of the division in which he worked.

After the start of World War II, LaVerne enlisted in the United States Army. He became a chaplain's assistant for Chaplain Major General William Miley. LaVerne received numerous commendations for his assistance in the transportation of the wounded from the Battle of the Bulge.

Following his honorable discharge, LaVerne returned to Rockford and became a rural letter carrier for the U. S. Postal Service. It was a position LaVerne would hold for over 30 years, retiring in the late 1970s.

LaVerne was a member of Remnant Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Nora Springs, where he was the church's pianist for many years. LaVerne was a gifted and talented pianist and formerly shared his talents as the pianist at the Holy Name Catholic Church of Rockford. LaVerne also traveled around to numerous care centers and senior citizen centers where he provided entertainment and assisted in worship services.

Those thankful for sharing LaVerne's life include numerous nieces, nephews and friends and his care givers, the Rev. and Mrs Richard Sutton.

LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Delbert Bakeman; three sisters, Geraldine Garner, Gladys Fox and Hazel Bakeman; seven stepbrothers, Will, George, Jesse, Bert and Clarence Bakeman and Jay and Ray Gifford; and two stepsisters, Lila Gifford and Agnes Peet.

HENRIETTA BERNICE "DOLLIE" JENISON

BELMOND - Henrietta Bernice "Dollie" Jenison, 84, died Friday (Dec. 1, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Belmond, with Pastor Celestyne De Vance officiating. Interment will be in Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Tenold Funeral Home, Belmond. The family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.

Henrietta Bernice (Sturgeon) Jenison, affectionately known as "Dollie," was born Oct. 18, 1916, at Dows. She attended and graduated from the Dows High School in 1934.

After graduation she began working in St. Louis, Mo., and Austin, Minn., before moving to Belmond.

Henrietta was united in marriage to Duane Jenison on March 12, 1938. They farmed together north of Belmond and raised three sons. After the boys left home, she began working for Dr. A. M. Nelson and later at the Belmond Community Hospital in the Medical Records Department. They retired to Belmond in 1982.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the UMW.

Those thankful for sharing in her life are her three sons, Roland Jenison and his wife, Phyllis, of Ames, Lynn Jenison and his wife, Karen, of Ellensburg, Wash., and Jerry Jenison and his wife, Lynn, of Ames; eight grandchildren, Lisa Jenison Keller, Leigh Alan Jenison, Rachael Jenison Brown, Troy John Jenison, Gina Jenison Evans, Tami Jenison Trotter, Judson Paul Jenison and Scott J. Jenison; eight great-grandchildren, Lena Anne Jenison, Anna Leigh Jenison, Tomas Ian Jenison, Andrew James Keller, Paul Jenison Keller, Grace Elizabeth Keller, Maya Marie Evans and Jack Jenison Evans; and a sister June Dieser of Owatonna, Minn.

BUFFALO CENTER - Fern Recker, 86, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at Timely Mission Nursing Home, Buffalo Center.

RUDD - Robert M. Norby, 79, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City.

In accordance with Robert's request there will be no services. The body was cremated. There will be a private scattering of ashes at the farm in the springtime when the corn is growing and the fish are biting.

Robert was born Feb. 27, 1921, near Rudd, the son of Tillman and Gea (Field) Norby. He attended country school near Rudd.

On April 4, 1941, he was united in marriage to Doris Kuhlemeier at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. This union was blessed with four children: Roland and his wife, Mary, of Rudd, Barbara Novak and Toby Anama of Des Moines, Carolyn Smith and her husband, Tom, of Centerville, and Bill and his wife, Vikie, of Rudd.

He farmed near Rudd most of his life. Camping and fishing were a few of his favorite pastimes. He was a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church.

Robert is survived by his wife, Doris; his four children; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, John, Michael, Kimberly, Norby, Mrs. John (Tammy) Berhends and her children, Nicole and Emily, Mrs. Travis (Roxanne) Stohr and their children, Chase and Chance, Mrs. Ronald (Heidi) Marzen and their children, Cody and Lee, Mrs. Gary (Lisa) Parks and their children, Dylan and Kaylee, Scott and his wife, Shadi Norby, and their daughter, Marissa, and Krystal Norby; and three brothers, Raymond and his wife, Nancy, of Rudd, John and his wife, Bonnie, of Osage, and Harold and his wife, Roberta, of Nora Springs.

His parents preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Jackson and Ferguson Sts., Charles City, with Pastor Gale Richards of the Colwell United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City.

TILLIE G. KRIZ

GARNER - Tillie Kriz, 93, of Garner, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Concord Care Center in Garner.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church with Father Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Cedar Falls.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner with a Rosary Society rosary at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Tillie Georgia Kriz, the daughter of Mathew and Mary (Shevlik) Pavel, was born Sept. 14, 1907, at Abie, Neb. On Jan. 22, 1934, she was married to Francis George Kriz at Abie. They farmed near Brainard, Neb., until 1948 when they moved to Tapoi, Minn., where they continued farming

In 1965 they moved to Cedar Falls where they both worked at the American Martyrs Retreat House until 1977 when Francis passed away. Tillie moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner and lived there until she entered Concord Care Center in 1992.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing cards and especially baking her "kolaches" for Christmas.

She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and Rosary Society.

Tillie is survived by her two children, Lucille Klesel and her husband, Robert, of Garner, and Gene Kriz and his wife, Becky, of Kimberly, Wis.; four grandchildren, Michael Klesel and his wife, Traci and their two children, Colter and Nathan, David Klesel and his wife, Liz, and their two children, Melissa and Shannon, Julianne Klesel of Omaha, Neb. and Barrett Kriz and his daughter, Zoe; a brother, Joe Pavel and his wife, Marie, of Dodge, Neb.; a sister, Harriet Ruzicka of North Bend, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Beulah Pavel of Andnover, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Kriz; her parents; four brothers, Otto, Clarence, Ernest and George Pavel; and two sisters, Eleanora and Annie Pavel.

Mrs. Dawson, the former Esther Looff was born July 5, 1907, in Wellsburg, the daughter of Henry and Carrie (Rindels) Looff. On July 29, 1925, in Mason City, Esther was united in marriage to James S. Dawson Sr. The couple made their home in Rockford before moving to Charles City in the late '20s. Mr. Dawson died Oct. 3, 1954, in Charles City.

Following her husband's death, Mrs. Dawson went to work as the manager of the lunch counter in the former May Drug Store in Charles City. She then held a similar position at the former Boulevard Restaurant in Charles City.

Mrs. Dawson was a staunch and loyal member of the First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ. She served on the church's Prudential Board and was a member of the Congregational Women's Fellowship. Esther was a tireless worker in the church's kitchen, helping serve many meals for various church functions and service groups.

She also devoted many hours in the kitchen for the Pythian Sisters Temple #84, of which she had been an active member, participating in many of the rituals. Mrs. Dawson had also been active in the American Legion Auxiliary in Charles City.

At home, Esther continued in her kitchen work, by canning nearly all of the produce from her immense garden. Esther was noted in her family for her fastidious attention to cleaning. Mrs. Dawson also did all types of sewing for many people. She worked with her daughter, Dody, as a seamstress at the former Janan's Children's Clothing Shop in Charles City.

Those thankful for sharing Esther's life include three children and their spouses, Dody and Russell Guthart, of Charles City, Cheryl and Virgil Sullivan, of Manly and Richard and Liz Dawson of Charles City; 14 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband; she was preceded in death by a son, James S. Dawson Jr. and seven brothers and sisters.

VERNON DEAN DIPPEL

BELMOND - Funeral services for Vernon Dean Dippel, 68, of Belmond will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond, with Pastor Steven Cox officiating. Military rites will be conducted at the church by the Belmond Honor Guard. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Belmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Tenold Funeral Home and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church.

Vernon Dean Dippel was born Aug. 16, 1932, on a farm near Belmond, the son of Edward and Anna (Adams) Dippel. He attended the Belmond schools and graduated in 1950.

Vernon worked at Sphan & Rose and did carpentry work for Ted Zook and later for Ted Meyers.

He enlisted in the United States Army in 1953 during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska. He was discharged in April of 1956 from Fort Riley, Kan.

In January of 1956, he married Lily Wenzel and to this union seven children were born.

He worked at Thompsen's Clothing, Kinseth's Plumbing & Heating, Nelson Sand & Gravel, Tomson Seed Company, which later became ACCO and then Cargill. He enjoyed fishing and bowling.

He died on Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at the Ellsworth Community Hospital in Iowa Falls.

FERTILE - Esther Haugen, 86, of Fertile, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ in Fertile, with Pastor Justin May officiating. Interment will be at the Grant Township Cemetery in rural Fertile.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake.

Esther was born Sept. 12, 1914, at Banks, N. D., the daughter of John and Adlida (Jacobson) Furness. The family moved to Hanlontown, where Esther graduated from high school in May of 1933. She married James Haugen and they lived their entire married life in Fertile.

Esther babysat before she started working for Walker Deluxe (now Fleetguard) as a machine operator. After retiring from Walker Deluxe, she continued to babysit for grandkids and other little children. She enjoyed reading and playing games with them and they nicknamed her "Grandma Winkie." She always had cookies for the kids. Some of her hobbies were watching the Hawkeyes, Twins, and birds, and she also enjoyed flower gardening, reading the Bible and doing crossword puzzles. She accepted Christ while attending Gospel Mission in Fertile, as a young woman. One of her favorite sayings was ''Uff-Da.''

Esther is survived by her children, Judie Hall and her husband, Eugene, of Fertile, Larry Haugen and his wife, Dixie, of Clear Lake, and Janan Haugen, of West Point; seven grandchildren, Tim Hall and his wife, Patty, of Mason City, Tracy Hall and his wife, Tammy, of Fertile, Tami Jo Horner and her husband, Dan, of Clear Lake, Troy Hall and his wife, Tricha, of Forest City, Leslie Volz and her husband, Andy, of Savage, Minn., Lynne Haugen, of Des Moines, and Laura Barnes and her husband, Chad, of Des Moines; 11 great-grandchildren, Christopher Hall, Casey Hall, Stephen Hall, Andrew Hall, Samantha Horner, Brady Horner, Austin Horner, Hailey Horner, Bethany, Nicholas and Logan Hall, five sisters, Dorothy Schulte, Jenny Aausland, Helen Balfe, Mabel Main, Evelyn Kline and her husband, Harold; two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Jenny Furness.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James S. Haugen on Aug. 28, 1975, and six brothers and six sisters.

ROBERT JAMES HARRIS

LAKE CORNELIA - Robert James Harris, 76, 1896 Sandy Beach Road, Lake Cornelia, was with his family at home when he passed away and began a new life with the Lord on Dec. 2, 2000.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Clarion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Chuck Kellogg officiating.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Willim Funeral Home, 602 N. Main St. in Clarion.

Bob was born on Dec. 7, 1923 at Rowan, Iowa, to Rolland and Jessie (Allen) Harris. Growing up, Bob lived near Rowan and Alexander, attending school at Rowan. After graduation he started farming with his parents.

On Jan. 6, 1945, he volunteered to serve his Country by enlisting into the United States Army. He served with the 11th Airborne Division and was stationed in the Philippines, Korea and Japan until being discharged on Nov. 26, 1946.

He was united in marriage to Emily Mattingly on June 19, 1948, in Clarion, Iowa. Bob and Emily moved to Ackworth, Iowa, in 1954 to farm before returning in 1960 to purchase a farm between Olaf and Kanawha. He remained on the farm until moving to Lake Cornelia in 1976.

Family members remaining to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Emily, of Lake Cornelia; four children and spouses, Gary and his wife, Marcia, of Belmond, Vicki and her husband, Dan, of Clear Lake, Christi and her husband, Bill, of Kanawha, and Lori and her husband, Don, of Pelham, N.H.

Ten grandchildren and spouses with special memories are Valerie and husband, Brent Bryant, of Ames, Jeff Harris, of Belmond, Angie Harris, of Ames, Amy Jackson, of Kalamazoo, Mich., Emily Jackson, of Clear Lake, Brandi Broshar, of St. Paul, Minn., Brad Broshar and his wife, Stephanie, of Kanawha, Ryan Broshar, of Kanawha, Nicole and Michelle Lemieux, of Pelham, N.H. Bob leaves two sisters, Ardyce Bailey and husband, Kenneth, of Rowan, Lois Johnson, of West Des Moines; one brother, Merle Harris and his wife, Jacque, of Walhalla, S.C.

Preceding him were his parents, Rolland and Jessie Harris; and brother-in-law, Robert Johnson.

EAGLE GROVE - LeRoy W. Umstead, of Eagle Grove, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at Hospice Cottages of Fort Dodge at the age of 87.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Church of Christ in Eagle Grove, with the Rev. Lisa Hadler officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

LeRoy William Umstead was born on Sept. 27, 1913, at Goldfield, Iowa, the son of Samuel and Nellie (McCutcheon) Umstead. He grew up and lived out his life in the Eagle Grove-Goldfield area. LeRoy completed country school in Goldfield and began to work at an early age as a farm hand.

He then worked at the area sale barns and as a livestock dealer, before purchasing the Eagle Grove Sale Barn. The horse and cattle auctions were widely known throughout the Midwest. LeRoy was in business for 55 years, retiring at the age of 85.

He volunteered at the Wright County 4-H Calf Sale for 62 years. He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove and was a trustee for many years.

In 1936, LeRoy married Myrtle Paulson Hetland, who died in 1938. In 1940 he married Kathryn Helbach, who died in 1989.

LeRoy is survived by his sons, William, of Albert Lea, Minn., and Monte, of Eagle Grove; daughters, Jo Elberg, of Eagle Grove and Jeanne Spangler, of Rock Mount, N.C.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Maxine Ziegler, of Corwith; brothers, Paul and Dick Umstead, of Eagle Grove and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. today at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Dr. in Mason City, with the Rev. Terry Hamilton-Poore officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Visitation will held from 10 a.m. until noon today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City.

Memorials may be given to the Parish Health Ministries at the First Presbyterian Church.

Marie was born Sept. 26, 1904, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Edna (Kleinert) Horn. She attended schools in Ottumwa, Iowa, Austin, Minn., and Sioux Falls, S.D.

On Oct. 9, 1928, she was married to Roy L. Lane in Sioux Falls, S.D. They moved to Sioux City in 1932. When Marie lived in Sioux City, she was active in church school, Presbytery and Synod in the Presbyterian Church. She was a 70-year member of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.

The Lanes moved to Mason City in 1989 to retire and be near their children and grandchildren.

Marie was known as "The Knitting Lady," making hundreds of caps and mittens for Head Start and Charlie Brown Day Care Centers. She was a member of the Mason City Woman's Club, a 45- year member of Pythian Sisters; and a 20-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mason City.

She is survived by her daughter, Margie Lane Schmidt, of Mason City; grandchildren, Pamela Joy Echelbarger, of Mason City, Jennifer Lea Echelbarger Bernard and her husband, Dennis, of Webster City, Teri Lyn Echelbarger Purcell, of Minneapolis, Minn., Robert Lane Echelbarger, of Mason City, Thomas Vern Echelbarger, of Iowa City, Russell David Echelbarger, of Mason City, Elizabeth Anne Schmidt Ringwald and her husband, Rand, of Seattle, Wash., Andrew Lane Schmidt, of Bordentown, N.J., Martha Marie Schmidt, of Des Moines, and Sarah Jane Schmidt McBride and her husband, Scott, of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-grandchildren, Nora Marie Bernard, of Webster City, Danielle Louise Bernard, of Webster City, Rhys Evan Ringwald, of Seattle, Wash., Kyree Troy Mure, of Des Moines, Sierra Lee Mure, of Des Moines, and Thomas Quinn McBride, of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister, Marjorie Harbin, of Seattle, Wash., nieces and nephews; and other survivors include Robert Echelbarger and his wife, Sadie, of Mason City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy, on Jan. 6, 1984; daughter, Shirley Ann Lane Echelbarger; and sisters, Cecyle Overocker, and Blanche Harrington.
