KATIE LYNN NIELSON

ANKENY - Katie Lynn Nielson, 15, of Ankeny, died Saturday (Dec. 2, 2000) at her home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ankeny First United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Ankeny First United Methodist Church with a 6 p.m. vigil.

Memorials may be given to the Ankeny First United Methodist Church or Katie L. Nielson Research Memorial Fund.

Katie Lynn Nielson was born Sept. 23, 1985, in Aurora, Colorado. She was a student. She was a member of the Heart Connection, Sunshine Kids, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Lighthouse SOS, YMCA Indian Princess Program and the Ankeny First United Methodist Church.

She won first place in drawing contest sponsored by Hawkeye Bank and second place in contests with Brenton Bank and Ankeny YMCA. Katie's artwork is being honored this year by being placed on the holiday cards for both the Heart Connection and Sunshine Kids of Texas.

Katie's goal was to see all 50 states but did get to see 30 of the states and 28 National Parks. She swam in the oceans on both coasts and traveled to Disney World twice through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

She was active in piano recitals, swimming, basketball, volleyball, softball, art, poetry and travel.

She is survived by her parents, Eric and Carol Nielson, of Ankeny; a sister, Vanessa, and a brother, Peter, both at home; maternal grandparents, Lowell and Marilyn Cook, and paternal grandparents, Ron and Evonka Nielson; a great-grandmother, Tonna Stoynoff, all of Mason City.

Katie's poem:
     "Sometimes in life things go wrong, 
       All you can do is just move on,

      Bad things happen every day. 
       Somehow they always go away.

      You feel like you can't do anything right, 
        You're sad all day and awake all night.

      Remember, no one's life is ever perfect,

ALGONA - Viola L. Marlow, 86, of Algona, died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at the Algona Manor Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, with Father Steve Brodersen officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Bancroft.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Algona, with a 3:30 p.m. rosary and a parish prayer service at 7 p.m.

LAKOTA - Alfred John Hellman, 77, of 1407 380th St., died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at his home.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft with Father Paul Bormann and the Rev. Phil Doocy officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Bancroft.

Visitation will begin 3 p.m. Friday at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Bancroft, with an Altar Society Rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil for the deceased at 7 p.m.

BURT - Nora L. Giddings, 83, of Burt, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at the Kossuth Regional Health Center.

CHARLES CITY - Phyllis (Mrs. Dean) Groshens, 65, of 1904 Rolfing St. died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

BURT - Anita Mary Marlow, 81, of 403 Maple Street, died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at the Kossuth Regional Healthcare Center in Algona.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Presbyterian Church, 204 Elm Street in Burt, with the Rev. Roland Emond officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery in Algona.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy Schaaf Funeral Home, 218 S. Monroe St. in Algona, and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

DOTTIE PALS SARGENT

MARSHALLTOWN - Dottie (Mrs. Rollie) Pals Sargent, 72, of 3202 S. 12th St. in Marshalltown, died Tuesday morning (Dec. 5, 2000) at her home while in the care of the Iowa River Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Center Street Baptist Church with Pastor Bobby Shomo officiating. The family will be receiving friends for a luncheon at the church immediately following the funeral services.

Interment rites will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Memorial Park Cemetery west of Mason City.

Friends may call at the Estel-Perrin-Avey Funeral Home in Marshalltown after 4 p.m. on Thursday, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m.

Born Dorothea Hermene Meier on May 20, 1928, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of Gustav and Hermene Wadertz Meier. She received her education in the area of her birth and then attended college for her nurses training.

On Aug. 29, 1949, she was united in marriage to Warren Arthur Pals in Clear Lake. He preceded her in death in September of 1985. She later married Rollie Sargent on March 30, 1991, in Marshalltown. They both are members of the Center Street Baptist Church.

Mrs. Pals Sargent had resided in Munich, Germany for 37 years, Omaha, Neb., for four years, Swaledale for five years, Nora Springs for 10 years, Rockford, Ill. for two years and in St. Louis for two years. She had been a registered nurse and later a missionary until retiring in 1990 after 42 years of service to both.

Surviving are her husband, Rollie; three daughters and three sons, Douglas W. Pals, of Mason City, Kevin K. Pals, of Ventura, and Daniel K. Pals, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Rebecca J. Fletchall, of Innsbruck, Austria, Diann C. Backus, of Des Moines, and Tamara K. Gunther, of Florissant, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; and a sister and two brothers, Mary Ann Ditsworth, of Mason City, Martin Meier, of Swaledale, and Richard Meier, of Swaledale.

Preceding her in death were her first husband, her parents, and a granddaughter, Deborah Jayne Pals.

RUTH REBECCA WELLS JOHNSON

MASON CITY - Ruth Rebecca Wells Johnson, 82, of Mason City, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Frederick Wood, of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Mason City, officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 West in Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel and one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Ruth Rebecca Wells Johnson was born on Sept. 24, 1918, in Jolly, Iowa, the daughter of Delbert and Lucy (Smith) Shorey. She attended and received her education in the West Bend Community Schools.

She was united in marriage to John V. Wells in 1937. He preceded her in death on March 19, 1982. Ruth worked for Mode O' Day in Mason City, Park Inn Café in Mason City, Buehler's in Mason City, and Denny's Restaurant and Sandwich Shop in Mason City, as a cook, retiring at the age of 70.

Ruth was also an RSVP Volunteer and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society in Mason City.

She was united in marriage to Vernon Johnson in 1960. He preceded her in death on Dec. 29, 1996.

Ruth enjoyed crafts, both having and going to yard sales, playing checkers and cards with her grandchildren, bingo, eating out, visiting with friends and family on the phone and her pets.

Ruth was best known and remembered as being a very generous person and putting other peoples needs ahead of her own, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren and was known by her family as being a "Port in a Storm."

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Robert Wells and his wife, Beth, of Mason City, Johnnie Wells and his wife, Beverly, of Mason City, Richard Wells and his wife, Dorothy "Dottie" of Nashua, Roger Wells and his wife, Betty, of Sheffield, and Dorothy Grossmann and her husband, Michael, of Davenport; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mamie Baldwin, of Des Moines, and Rose Smith, of Elgin, Okla.; as well as several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.

Her parents; two husbands; two children, Marilee Scott and David Wells; and four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.

KEITH E. DICKSON

AMES - Keith E. Dickson, 78, of Ames, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Mary Greeley Medical Center of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Church of Christ-Congregational with the Rev. Stephen McDuff officiating. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Ave., with an 8 p.m. Masonic Lodge service.

Memorials may be given to the United Church of Christ-Congregational Four Season Lodge at Pilgrim Heights.

Keith E. Dickson was born on Nov. 14, 1922, in Charles City, a son of John R. and Hazel (Swan) Dickson. He graduated from Osage High School. He has lived in Ames since 1939. He received a B.S. in Agricultural Economics in 1943.

He was owner of Dickson's Accounting from 1946-2000 (1946-1959 partnership with his brother Dean Dickson) 1959-2000 sole proprietor; 1978 son, James, and 1982 son, David, joined the firm; he was a farm manager and owner from 1952 to present with livestock and grain; share leases in northern and southeast Iowa; and part owner in five implement businesses.

He was in the Army Air Force and Infantry from 1943 to 1946 and served in Germany.

He married Miriam Hazen on June 18, 1944, in Colorado Springs.

He was a member and past president of Ames Rotary Club, served two times as chair of United Way of Ames; member of Masonic Arcadia Lodge No. 249, AF & AM where he served as chaplain for 12 years. He was a member of Toastmasters; member moderator of the United Church of Christ-Congregational, Ames, long-time treasurer and board member of the Iowa Conference of the United Church of Christ Congregational; fund-raising co-chair for Iowa Conference Campaigns for Pilgrim Heights Camp, Mayflower Retirement Home, and 1776 Negro College Fund; member of the National Board of Homeland Ministries for the United Church of Christ-Congregational; member of the board of directors for Marshalltown Soldiers Home; longtime member and past president of the Board of Directors for Ames Savings & Loan, Ames Savings Bank, and Brenton Bank, Ames Branch.

He is survived by his wife, Miriam, of Ames; daughter, Joyce E. Hertz, of Ames; sons, David K. Dickson, of Ames, Jon L. Dickson, of Fargo, N.D., and James E. Dickson, of Ames; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Dean Dickson, in 1981.

MAYNARD P. KAHL

JOICE -Maynard P. Kahl, 77, of Joice, died Sunday (Dec. 3, 2000) at the Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City of Cancer.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, with the Rev. Gary Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Concordia Lutheran Cemetery in Joice.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake, and also for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Maynard P. Kahl Memorial Fund.

Maynard was born Oct. 14, 1923, in Webster City, the son of David Alfred and Madeline (Loux) Kahl. He attended rural school near Blairsburg and served in the United States Army during World War II.

Maynard was united in marriage to Jacqueline Zuehlke on Oct. 27, 1947, in Grand Meadow, Minn. The couple farmed near Austin, Minn., and Rockford for 25 years. In 1964, Maynard retired from farming and purchased a truck and performed contract hauling for Carroll Sales in Mason City, which he drove for until his retirement.

Maynard was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, a former Rockford city councilman, and a former member of the Rockford Methodist Church and the Rockford and Clear Lake Lions Clubs.

He enjoyed crafts, working outdoors, wintering in Texas, and hobby farming.

Maynard is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Judith Vae and John Wonsmos, of Joice, and Barbara Jean and Bruce Wood, of Rockford; three brothers, Calvin Kahl and his wife, Evelyn, and Harold Kahl, all of Grand Meadow, Minn., and David Kahl and his wife, Harriet, of Le Center, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Jeanne Kahl Bush, of Grand Meadow, Minn., four grandchildren, Robyn, Andrew, and Nathan Wood and Jeanne Sigler; two step-grandsons, Peter and Chris Wonsmos, three great-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.

Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and three brothers.

JANET JOYCE ARNDT

ROCKWELL - Janet Joyce Arndt, 59, of 303 Cherry St., died Monday (Dec. 4, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. Ronald Bollinger officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Swaledale.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell.

Janet was born Oct. 23, 1941, the daughter of George and Dorothy (Greiman) Wilson, in Mason City. On Feb. 12, 1958, Janet was united in marriage to Robert Arndt in Mason City. The couple made their home in Rockwell most of their lives.

For more than 25 years Janet was employed at IMI Cornelius in Mason City.

Janet had an interest in reading, playing cards - especially 500 - playing Nintendo, golfing and traveling to Tama to gamble. She enjoyed traveling and going on special road trips with her husband.

Janet was known for her consumption of Pepsi and eating Chinese food. She could often be found watching and protecting her bird feeder. Her most precious time was spent at family gatherings, highlighted by the presence of her grandchildren.

Janet was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Rockwell.

Those thankful for having shared in Janet's life include her husband, Robert; one daughter, Julie and her husband, Keith Noyes, of Fort Irwin, Calif.; two sons, Craig and his wife, Sheryl Arndt, of Mason City, and Mike Arndt and his friend, Kim, of Rockwell; four sisters, Barb and her husband, Al Formanek, of Clear Lake, Nancy and her husband, Dennis Ward, of Rockwell, Linda Belle and her husband, Mike LaPiere, of Dallas, Texas, and Beth and her husband, Dennis Milbrandt, of Rockwell; eight grandchildren, Travis, Tyla, Dylan, Jon, Courtney, Cole, Amber, and Chris; and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Janet was preceded in death by her grandparents; parents, George and Dorothy Wilson; father-in-law, Velder Arndt; and a sister-in-law, Cheryl Alden.

MASON CITY - Rosie Mae Peery, 97, died Wednesday (Dec. 6, 2000) at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Waughtal, director of pastoral care, Good Shepherd Health Center, officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. in Waveland Cemetery, Prairie City, with graveside service conducted by the Rev. Robert Price of the Prairie City Christian Church.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home, Friday. Memorials may be directed to the Rosie Mae Peery Memorial Fund.

Rosie Mae Peery was born the second of 12 children, Jan. 13, 1903, near Blakesburg in Monroe County, to Henry W. and Mae ((Barnwell) Wiand. She attended country schools.

On July 20, 1929, she was united in marriage with Laurence Peery in Ankeny. They moved to Mason City in September of that year. She has lived in Mason City ever since.

Rosie loved her home and family. She was a charter member of the WigWam & Wagon Camping Group. She enjoyed traveling and spent 22 winters in Arizona. She had lived at the Manor and spent a year and a half at Willow Pointe Assisted living.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna Geving and her husband, LeRoy, Mason City; one grandson, Jay Geving and his wife, Bonny, Algona; a granddaughter, Norma Lovstad and her husband, Philip, Burt; great-grandchildren, Benjamin Geving and his wife, Summer, Algona, Jeffrey and Jason Geving, Algona, and Jordan and Shelby Lovstad, Burt; two brothers, John Wiand and his wife, Mary, Le Claire, and William Wiand Jr. and his wife, Crystal, Des Moines; two sisters, Maxine Snook, Lakewood, Colo., and Mabel Ross, Bettendorf; and several nieces and nephews.

Rosie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Laurence, in 1994; an infant son, Philip, in 1937; four brothers; and three sisters.

ROSS WILLIAM STEPHENSON

CLEAR LAKE - Ross William Stephenson, 87, of Clear Lake died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec 9, at the Regular Baptist Church in Clear Lake with Pastor Steven Cox officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 W., Mason City. Friends may call from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St.,Clear Lake, and one hour prior to the services on Saturday at the church.

The family of Ross Stephenson has requested that memorial contributions be made to the Regular Baptist Church in Clear Lake or to Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City in his memory.

Ross Stephenson was born on April 2, 1913, in Audubon County, the son of Avery and Jennie (Whited) Stephenson. He attended and received his education in the Adair County system.

He was united in marriage to Leora Christensen on Feb. 9, 1937, in Guthrie Center. After their marriage he was a farmer in Spencer for a short time. At the time of their marriage they lived in Anita, then moved to Greenfield where together they farmed until 1966, then moved to Hampton, then moved to Oskaloosa in 1981, before moving to Clear Lake in 1985.

Ross worked for Arbie Mineral & Feed Co. while living in Hampton. He achieved top sales awards for every year over a nine-year span. In 1972 Ross received the top sales men for Iowa award. The award was presented to Ross by Des Moines Drake University Coach Morey John.

He enjoyed woodworking and fishing, especially his annual fishing trip to the Lake of the Woods. Other interests included gardening, playing softball as a teenager in SW Iowa where he was a catcher in both baseball and softball, and managing teams for 4-H four years and FFA for three years. He liked square dancing, was an Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed watching sports on ESPN, and had a great sense of humor. But his great love and enjoyment were his family and grandchildren.

He was a member of the Regular Baptist Church in Clear Lake. Ross had a strong Christian faith in his Lord and Savior. He was a past Deacon of the church, taught Sunday school, was a 4-H leader for two years, served on the Board of Directors of Farm Bureau for 20 years and on the Board of Directors of Farm Service for 10 years.

Left to cherish his memory are two daughters, Connie Lea Ditchfield and her husband, William, of Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs.Colleen Kay Tyler of Clear Lake; four grandchildren, Kurtis DeMilt and his wife, Jennifer, of Bartlett, Tenn., Kyle DeMilt and his wife, Romona, of Bartlett, Tenn., Kevin DeMilt and his wife, Kitty, of Memphis, Tenn., and Stephanie Duesenberg and her husband, Greg, of Clear Lake; five great-grandchildren, Morgan and Chase Duesenberg, Daniel DeMilt, David DeMilt, and Dana DeMilt; two half brothers, Max Stephenson of Anita, and Rex Stephenson of Adair; two half sisters, Marie Lents of Fontanelle, and Betty Griffith of Grand Junction; as well as other relatives and friends.

Ross was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Leora Stephenson on Aug. 23, 2000, one granddaughter, Peyton Read, two brothers, Earl Stephenson and Ceicel Stephenson, and one sister.

CLEAR LAKE - Susan D. Colsrud, 45, of 613 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Tuesday (Dec. 5, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Susan was born Nov. 9, 1955, in Schaller, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Muriel (Hartley) Vierow. She graduated from Laurens High School in 1974. She moved to Clear Lake in 1976.

Susan married Paul Colsrud and she had lived in Clear Lake ever since. She was always on the go and willing to help friends, never saying "No" to anyone in need. Susan was a very loving and caring person who enjoyed gardening, spending time with her children and loving her cats. Susan had a "Granddog," Keelie, whom she loved to spoil.

Susan is survived by her two children, Kari Stricker and special friend, Tom Gregor, of Mason City, and Brian Colsrud and special friend, Jaime Bergquist, of Clear Lake; mother, Muriel Vierow of Laurens, two brothers, Leigh Vierow of Fort Dodge, and Bill Vierow of Laurens; two sisters, Annette Kuchenreuther and her husband, Glenn, of Fonda, and Debbie Paul Kirsch, of Laurens, and one granddaughter dog named Keelie Jo.

Edward was born Dec. 13, 1908, in Blue Earth, Minn., the son of William Clifford and Amanda (Zutz) Pope. Edward married Ruth I. Grover Feb. 17, 1929, in Mason City.

Edward worked at Jacob B. Decker and Sons, Central Heights Grocery and also as a carpenter for Al Franzen Construction.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and Local Carpenters Union. He enjoyed traveling and camping with friends, Mae and Hilbert Frenz, and spending time with his son, Edward, and his family in Santa Rosa, Calif.

Edward faithfully visited his wife in the nursing home before entering the care facility himself three years ago.

He is survived by two sons, Edward C. Pope and his wife, Valene, of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Richard A. Pope and his wife, Rachel, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Daniel Pope and his wife, Susan, of Mason City, David Pope and his wife, Kristie, of Mason City, Sandy Pace and her husband, Steve, of California, and Jannice Jennings and her husband, Richard, of Washington; and 14 great-grandchildren.

MASON CITY -Robert "Bob" Duane Tilson, 67, of Kensett, died Thursday (Dec. 7, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

According to his wishes, his body was donated to the Mayo Medical Center Department of Anatomy in Rochester, Minn., to help in the fight against diseases. There will be no visitation.

Robert "Bob" Duane Tilson was born on Aug. 26, 1933, in Garrison, the son of Everett and Doris Leila (Kizer) Tilson.

He attended and received his education in the Vinton school system, graduating from Vinton High School in 1953. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Smith on Nov. 28, 1954, at the First Christian Church in Vinton.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northwood and the Kensett Lions Club.

Don retired from US West Telecommunications in 1986, after 38 years of service. He was united in marriage to Darlene Berhow on Aug. 21, 1948, in Medford, Minn. She preceded him in death on April 17, 1991.

He was a member of Telephone Pioneers, Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Moose Lodge, all in Mason City.

He is survived by his son, Craig Knedler and his wife, Karolyn, of Ankeny; and his daughter, Trudy Runge and her husband, Mark, of Mason City; his mother, Marie Bailey, of Topeka, Kan.; seven grandchildren, Brandon, Paul, Justin, Tyler and Kelly Knedler and Max and Marie Runge; one great-grandson, Alexander Knedler; one sister, Maxine Knedler, of Ottumwa; and a brother, Stan Knedler, of Redwood Valley, Calif.; as well as other relatives and friends.

Esther Hengesteg was born on May 16, 1915, in rural Glenville, Minn., the daughter of Edward and Caroline (Bure) Trae. She attended and received her education in rural Freeborn County School, District No. 115 and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1932. She received her teachers training in Austin, Minn. She taught in rural schools near Emmons and Bancroft, Minn.

Esther was united in marriage to Harvey Hengesteg on June 19, 1938, at Round Prairie Lutheran Church, rural Glenville. They farmed at rural Northwood until their retirement. Upon retirement they moved to Northwood. They had three sons, Sylvan, Gary and Clair.

Esther was an active member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church. She was a member of the church choir and was a Sunday school teacher and was active in the ladies organizations.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey; her daughter-in-law, Dee; sisters, Evely Selstad, Mabel Sletten, Lena Dybervik, Cora Trae, Tena Kvam and Elvina Jerdee; brothers, Arnold, Elmer and Kenneth Trae.

TOPSFIELD, Mass. - Mrs. Marjorie E. (Horton) Easton, 76, of 67 Perkins Row, Topsfield, a retired real estate broker, wife of W. Locke Easton, died Tuesday evening (Dec. 5, 2000) in the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Mass.

Born in Fargo, N.D., she was the daughter of the late Benton and Annabelle (Bondi) Horton. She was raised in White Bear, Minn., before moving to Mason City, where she graduated from Mason City High School.

An honorably discharged veteran, she served her country during World War II in the WAVES. Her service was involved in the Pilot Training Program in Pensacola, Fla. Mrs. Easton had been employed as a stewardess for TWA Airlines and was a real estate broker for 18 years in the towns of Hamilton, Topsfield and Boxford, Mass., for both Gill Freeman and Hunneman Real Estate Agencies until the time of her retirement. She had been a resident of Topsfield for the past 39 years and had summered in Harrison, Maine, for 30-plus years. She was a member of the P.E.O. Chapter P of Marblehead, Mass.

In addition to her husband, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage, Marjorie is survived by her daughter, Beverly Easton of Harrison, Maine, her son and daughter-in-law, Steven L. and D'Anne Easton of Conway, Ark.; four grandchildren; and her sister, Helen J. Whorley of Corvalis, Wash.

Her funeral was held Saturday in the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte 62) Danvers, Mass.

Burial was in Pine Grove Cemetery, Topsfield.

MASON CITY - Richard L. Bailey, 75, of 116 Meadow Lane, died Saturday (Dec. 9, 2000) at the USA Health Care Center.

RAYMOND C. WARDELL

MASON CITY - Raymond C. Wardell, 76, of 801 N. Federal, died Friday (Dec. 8, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Clark M. Burmester and Roger L. Wardell officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.

Mr. Wardell was born Feb. 19, 1924, at Arlington, a son of Clarence and Alvina (Zickler) Wardell. Raymond attended school at Arlington. He served in the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Arlington, where he met and married Virginia L. Bond on Aug. 18, 1946.

On Jan. 7, 1946, he came to know Christ as his personal Savior and Lord. The verses that led to his conversion were: John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." I John 1:7, "The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin."

Raymond farmed in the Fayette area for 23 years. He later worked at Winnebago Industries, Forest City, as a customer service repairman for 18 years until retiring. He remained active and in good health until his recent brief hospital stay.

Raymond, "departed to be with Christ which is far better," Philippians 1:23.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Wardell, Mason City; five children, Raymond F. Wardell, Jr., Chicago, twins, Donald H. Wardell, Tripoli and Darlene W. Wardell, Mason City, Delores V. (Clark) Burmester, Mason City and Roger L. (Joanna) Wardell, Syracuse, Utah; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Wardell, Hawkeye; two sisters, Marjorie Elston, Des Moines and June Walvatne, Hawkeye; eight nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Louisa Schutte, Juanita Este and Leota Smith.

JOHN M. "JACK" CHRISTENSEN

WESLACO, TEXAS - John M. "Jack" Christensen, 77, of 715 North Westgate No. 48, Weslaco, Texas, formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Dec. 6, 2000) at the Knapp Medical Center, in Weslaco, Texas.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Richard "Rick" Eichlenlaub of First Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with full military rites by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Memorials may be made to the John M. "Jack" Christensen Memorial Fund.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and until service time on Tuesday.

John M. Christensen was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Mason City, the son of Magus Chris and Jessie Mae (Johnson) Christensen. He attended Mason City schools. John began his military career on Feb. 10, 1941, when he volunteered with Co. H of the 133rd Infantry of the National Guard. The unit was ordered into active service just before World War II. He served overseas with the 34th Infantry Division and was among the first U.S. soldiers to land on foreign soil. He served in Ireland, North Africa and in the Italian campaign at Anzio beachhead. During his 42 months of overseas duty, he was awarded the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, three Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, European Middle Eastern ribbon and the Pre-Pearl Harbor Ribbon.

John returned to the United States in 1945. He was married to Clarice Bryant on Aug. 10, 1945, at the First Christian Church here in Mason City. He continued to serve in the Iowa National Guard until his retirement in 1982. John (Jack) worked for a number of years at Northwestern Portland Cement Co., retiring in July 1981. After his retirement he moved to Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Clarice Christensen, Weslaco, Texas; daughter, Nancy Ebbers and husband, John, Mason City; sons, John E. Christensen and wife, Carmen, McAllen, Texas and Keith Christensen and wife, Sue, Mason City; grandchildren, Lance Ebbers and wife, Sheila, Mason City, Dawn Siefken and husband, Lance, Mason City, Michael Christensen, Davenport and Caleb Christensen of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Jon Ebbers, Jason Ebbers, Zachary Neighbor, Megan Ebbers and Elexis Ruehlow, all of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Maxine McCoy; brothers, Lloyd Christensen, James Heston and Bob Heston.

DR. MICHAEL E. WRIGHT

IOWA CITY - Dr. Michael E. Wright, age 29, of 1326 Yewell St., Iowa City, formerly of Northwood, died Tuesday, (Dec. 5, 2000) at his home following a sudden illness.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood, with the Rev. Paul Holmer officiating. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery, Northwood.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, Highway 65 South, Northwood.

Dr. Wright was born Oct. 21, 1971, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Charles and Lonna (Holtan) Wright. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church, Northwood. He was a graduate of Northwood-Kensett High School in 1990, Luther College in 1994 and the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1998.

He married Julie Jean Heidger on June 6, 1998. He was a second-year resident physician in Anesthesiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics at the time of his death. His academic career was one of distinction and with induction at Luther College into Phi Beta Kappa, National Honor Society, and Alpha Phi Omega, National Service Fraternity. He was recognized at graduation from medical school with induction into the Medical Academic Honor Society, Alpha Omega Alpha, and as the College's first recipient of the NBI Foundation's Humanism in Medicine Award, recognizing his caring devotion to his patients and his promise to his profession.

He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Iowa City, and participated as a medical student on the church's mission's committee, with emphasis upon medical relief and outreach efforts.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Julie, of Iowa City; his mother, Lonna Wright; his brother, Brad; his paternal grandmother, Edith Wright, all of Northwood; his father-in-law, Dr. Paul Heidger; and sister-in-law, Lisa Heidger, all of Iowa City.

His father, Charles, his paternal grandfather, Donald, and his maternal grandparents preceded him in death.

RICEVILLE - Annie M. Reinke, 98, of Riceville, and formerly of the Ackley and Hampton area, passed away Friday (Dec. 8, 2000) at the Riceville Community Rest Home.
